00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:29faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having, for the sake
01:05of vile pleasures, turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground
01:24and washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example

11:10Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus
11:12Asking for a sign from heaven to test him
11:16Signed deeply in his spirit he said
11:19Why does this generation look for a sign?
11:22I tell you the truth
11:23No sign will be given to this generation
11:27But then he left them
11:28Got back into the boat
11:29And went over to the other side
11:33Now they had forgotten to take bread
11:35Except for one note they had with them in the boat
11:39Jesus ordered them
11:40Watch out
11:42Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees
11:44And the yeast of Herod
11:47And so they began to discuss with one another
11:49About having no bread
11:53When he learnt of this
11:54Jesus said to them
11:55Why are you still arguing about having no bread?
11:59Do you still not see or understand
12:01Have your hearts been hardened
12:04Though you have eyes
12:05Do you not see?
12:07And there you have ears
12:09Can't you hear?
12:11Do you remember?
12:12When they broke the five loaves for the five thousand
12:15How many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?
12:18They replied
12:19Twelve
12:22When they broke the seven loaves for the four thousand
12:25How many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?
12:29They replied
12:30Seven
12:31Then he said to them
12:32Do you still not understand?
12:37They came to Bethsaida
12:39And they brought to him a blind man
12:41And asked him to touch him
12:45He took the blind man by the hand
12:47And brought him to the outside of the village
12:48And he spat in his eyes
12:50Placed his hands on his eyes
12:52And asked
12:53Do you see anything?
12:56Regaining his sight he said
12:58I see people
12:59But they look like trees walking
13:02Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again
13:06And he opened his eyes
13:08His sight was restored
13:10And he saw everything clearly
13:13Jesus sent him home saying
13:14Do not even go into the village
13:21Then Jesus and his disciples went through the villages of Caesarea Philippi
13:25On the way he asked the disciples
13:28Who do people say that I am?
13:31They said
13:32John the Baptist
13:33Others say Elijah
13:35And still others one of the prophets
13:38He asked them
13:39But who do you say that I am?
13:43Peter answered him
13:44You are the Christ
13:47And he warned them not to say anything to anyone about him
13:54Then Jesus began to teach them
13:56That the Son of Man must suffer many things
13:58Be rejected by the elders, chief priests and experts in the law
14:02And be killed
14:04And after three days right again
14:07He spoke openly about this
14:09So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him
14:13And after turning and looking at his disciples
14:15He rebuked Peter and said
14:18Get behind me Satan
14:20You are not setting your mind on God's interests
14:22But on man's
14:26And turning to the mass of people with his disciples
14:29He said to them
14:30If any man has the desire to come after me
14:33Let him give up all other desires
14:35And take up his cross and come after me
14:40Whoever has a desire to keep his life
14:41Will have it taken from him
14:43And whoever gives up his life because of me
14:46And the good news will keep it
14:49What profit has a man
14:50If he gets all the world with the loss of his life?
14:54What would a man give in exchange for his life?
14:58Whoever has a feeling of shame because of me
15:00And my words in this false and evil generation
15:04The son of man will have a feeling of shame because of him
15:07When he comes to the glory of his father with the holy angels
15:11He said to them
15:13Truly I say to you
15:14There are some here
15:15Who will have no taste of death
15:18Until they see the kingdom of God come with power
15:22This is the word of the Lord
15:25Thanks be to God
15:30How stubborn the Pharisees were
15:33Here we read of them coming to Jesus
15:35Not for the purpose of putting honest questions to him
15:39In order that they may learn something of the kingdom of heaven
15:42But to test his authority
15:44To trap him
15:45And make him look stupid in front of the crow
15:49For this purpose we find them asking for a sign from heaven
15:55There already had been plenty such signs
15:58If only they had opened their eyes to see and hear
16:03Had they been at the baptism of Jesus as they should
16:05They would have seen the dove
16:07And heard the voice
16:09Matthew 3, 16 and 17
16:15Had they opened their eyes and considered the miracles that Jesus had worked in their midst
16:19Instead of challenging his authority and trying to belittle what was done
16:23His providence would have been without doubt
16:28What sign could they possibly have been looking for
16:35The reaction of Jesus is interesting
16:37For without saying anything he reveals to us so much
16:41We are told that he sighed deeply
16:46Not the sigh of one who is tired
16:48But the sigh of one who realises he is wasting his time
16:52The sigh of one who might at the same time say
16:57I give up with you people
16:59You are so blind and stupid
17:01And you have no real interest in what I have to say to you
17:07Then telling them there would be no sign
17:09He got up and went back in the boat
17:11To retrace his trip to the other side of the lake
17:19So what exactly did he mean when he said there would be no sign
17:24Surely his ministry was full of signs
17:26Was not the resurrection of Lazarus the biggest sign there could have been
17:32Indeed
17:33But I believe Jesus was speaking of a sign that would have convinced even the Pharisees
17:38Once and for all that he was who he is
17:43I suspect that only the sight of Jesus in all his glory
17:46Coming down from heaven
17:48Would have been a sufficient sign for them
17:50And that truly
17:52Is something that we will all have to wait for
17:56For those who were prepared to stop and listen
17:58To consider his words and to be open to the truth
18:02And there were and still are
18:04Signs to be seen every day
18:06That point to the power and authority of Jesus
18:10Even now today
18:11We look carefully
18:12We can see miracles in our daily lives
18:18The sceptics of course
18:20Will always want the big one
18:23Well we know it's coming
18:24But we just do not know exactly when or where
18:29But I would like to close with one last thought
18:32Jesus wants each and every one of us
18:34To accept him in our faith
18:37To accept him when it goes against logic
18:39And our base instinct to do so
18:42To accept him because we feel his love for us in our hearts
18:46When he comes again in glory
18:48To give us the sign
18:51It will be too late for those who refused him
18:57We then move on to a misunderstanding
18:59Between Jesus and his disciples
19:01Following the insistence of the Pharisees
19:04That Jesus produced this sign
19:08Jesus warned the disciples in the privacy of their boat
19:11Not to be like the Pharisees
19:14Demanding false food
19:15The yeast that will lead to destruction
19:19Because the disciples had been negligent
19:22In not packing food in the boat before they left
19:25They thought they were being criticised
19:27But of course we can see that this was not the purpose
19:30Of what Jesus was saying at all
19:34It is very easy for us to take comments too personally
19:38Especially when we are aware
19:39As we should be
19:40Of our own weaknesses and failings
19:45Sometimes this is justified
19:47But perhaps probably more often than not
19:49It is an overreaction on our part
19:54In this particular case
19:55The disciples had probably just realised
19:57They had brought no food for the journey
19:59And then Jesus started to speak of bread
20:02Referring not to their negligence
20:04But to the recent encounter with the Pharisees
20:08We need to be aware that this sort of thing
20:10Is just a devil play with our guilt
20:13And we should not allow ourselves to become upset
20:15Without good reason
20:18But of course Jesus realised what was going on
20:21And determined to turn this into a lesson
20:23For the disciples
20:25He asked them why they were so upset
20:27About having no food
20:29And reminded them of the time
20:31When he fed them multitudes from very little
20:34That he is the source of living food
20:37And that if only they had true faith
20:38They would not go hungry
20:43Again we can empathise with the disciples
20:45How often do we go to the fridge
20:47And find it almost empty
20:50Especially when the supermarkets are closed
20:53Our immediate thought is
20:55Surely
20:55What are we going to eat
20:59I can remember a number of years ago
21:01Going on holiday to another country
21:03We were due to arrive at the house
21:05We had rented early on Saturday afternoon
21:08And being experienced hands at these holidays
21:11We had decided not to take any food with us
21:14Because we thought we would be able to buy plenty on arrival
21:19Not this time though
21:22We arrived on time
21:24But discovered that it was a holiday weekend
21:27And that none of the shops
21:29Would reopen until Tuesday morning
21:33You can imagine the conversation that took place
21:39However a careful search of the cupboards in the kitchen
21:43Revealed enough food to feed the four of us perfectly well
21:46Until Tuesday
21:51The account of Jesus healing a blind man in Bethsaida
21:54Is reported only in Mark's Gospel
21:57And as one very unusual and instructive feature
22:02The blind man was brought to Jesus for healing
22:05Such was the faith of the friends who brought him
22:08That they wanted that Jesus just touched him
22:12In shades of Luke 8.45
22:17But what happened next is so revealing
22:20Jesus led the man out of the village
22:22So that they were in private
22:23And laid his hands on the man's eyes
22:28Although they had clearly been a healing
22:30The man was not convinced
22:31And admitting he could see something
22:33He tried to play down
22:34What he could actually see
22:38It is this reluctance to admit being healed
22:40That is so revealing and educational for us
22:45Here was a man who appeared to have little or no real faith
22:49And yet Jesus was happy to heal him
22:52Not only is he happy to perform the miracle
22:54But he wants to spend a few minutes in private with this man
23:01In short we have a man who is healed
23:02Not because of his own faith necessarily
23:05But because of the faith of his friends
23:08And there is a parallel with the account
23:10Of the man who was lowered through the roof
23:11And reached Jesus
23:12In chapter 2 verse 4
23:16But we are given to believe
23:17That the man had faith of his own
23:19As well as friends who had faith
23:24This is an important message for us
23:26For it invites us to pray in faith
23:28For the sick and needy that we know
23:30Regardless of the state of their faith
23:35However there is a second part of this encounter
23:38Because Jesus again places his hands on the man's eyes
23:41And we are told
23:42He saw everything clearly
23:46Not only could he see what was around him properly
23:50But he could also see Jesus properly
23:52And suddenly his faith was complete
23:58Seeing that the man now believed
24:00He was cured
24:01Jesus told him not to go back to the village
24:04But to return home quietly
24:09In short we have two miracles for the price of one
24:12For not only was the man's sight restored
24:15But he was given faith
24:16Despite his initial reluctance
24:18In two stages
24:22For us our encounter with Jesus can be the same
24:25And we should not be disappointed
24:26When in the first instance
24:27We do not receive it all
24:31Sometimes it takes time
24:33Especially for those of us who are more stubborn
24:35About giving up our faith too
24:42For us sometimes it is good to hear from others
24:44What they think of us
24:45In truth
24:46Not that we might be flattered
24:48Or feel pleased with ourselves
24:50But that we might have a better understanding
24:52And awareness of our thoughts
24:55And we read of Jesus asking his disciples
24:57What they thought of preaching
24:59Not for his own information of course
25:01But so that they themselves
25:03Might give some serious thought to it
25:07After miracles and months of teaching
25:09He wanted to open the discussion up
25:12And provoke their thought
25:15Peter of course hit the jackpot
25:17We are not told what the other disciples thought
25:20But it was always Peter who was the outspoken one
25:23The one who spoke first and then thought afterwards
25:26The one who jumped into the water
25:27And then remembered he couldn't swim
25:30It is interesting though just for a moment
25:32To consider the answers that the disciples gave
25:35Concerning the opinion of the people
25:39It is clear that everybody was impressed with Jesus
25:41And considered him someone very special
25:45Although probably not what they had been taught to expect
25:49From the Messiah when he came
25:51And so they stopped short
25:53Of thinking of him as Messiah
25:57It is interesting also to consider
25:59What they did not consider him to be
26:02Some form of magician
26:03Or deceiver
26:08Why then were the disciples
26:09Conunded to keep this secret
26:12Simply because it was necessary
26:14For the ministry of Jesus
26:15To run its course
26:16For the resurrection to take place
26:19For Jesus to return to heaven
26:20And for the Holy Spirit
26:21To descend and fill the disciples
26:23With the strength and heavenly knowledge
26:25They would need
26:26To spread the gospel throughout the world
26:30There was an appointed time and place
26:32To proclaim the kingship of Christ
26:34And before that time would come
26:37It would be necessary for Jesus to suffer
26:39At the hands of man that we put to death
26:45Sometimes it can be so hard to be patient
26:48We can be called by God
26:49And know that it is what we have to do
26:52But often we are also told to wait
26:54For the right time to go and do it
26:57And this intervening time
26:58Is for prayer and preparation
27:02How easy it can be
27:03To be grabbed by an idea
27:05And rush off and try it
27:07Only to discover that we are not prepared
27:09We have not done our homework properly
27:11So to speak
27:13And we are therefore destined to fail it
27:16We can see this in the reaction of Peter
27:18In verse 32
27:19Because Peter was not yet ready
27:22He had missed the entire point
27:24Of the ministry of Jesus
27:28So let our reaction to God's call
27:30Not be
27:32Yes Lord I am rushing off now
27:34But more
27:35Yes Lord I accept
27:37I will do whatever you ask me
27:39Teach me what I need to know
27:42And when it is time
27:43Tell me where to go
27:45And what to do
27:51Jesus went on to tell them a little
27:53About what Christian life would mean form
27:56Firstly we must set aside
27:57The ambitions of this world
27:58And in their place
28:00Assume Christ's ambition for us
28:03What does he want us to be or do
28:05As opposed to what do we want to be or do
28:08How we should stop worrying about tomorrow
28:11And the mundane that have been
28:13Does he not attend to their needs
28:15Jesus reminded them
28:16When they grumbled about forgetting to pack food
28:21We are not all going to be called to rush off
28:24And be martyred for Jesus
28:25In the same physical sense
28:26That we see perhaps of Stephen or James
28:30But we shall all be asked to make some sacrifice
28:35Perhaps we will also be turning our backs on our career
28:38Our comfortable lifestyle
28:40Our worldly friends or family
28:44Alternatively we might be called to bring a more Christian ethic
28:47To our place of work
28:50Whatever we are called to do or be
28:52It will not be comfortable
28:54It will not be well paid
28:57It will however bring spiritual well being
29:00And the security of knowing that
29:02Having placed our trust in Christ
29:04He will not neglect us
29:11Let us pray
29:14Grant O Lord we beseech you
29:16That the course of this world
29:18May be so peacefully ordered by your governors
29:21That your church may joyfully serve you
29:25In all godly quietness
29:27Through Jesus Christ our Lord
29:29Amen
29:36May the Lord bless us
29:37And keep us from all evil
29:39Bringing us to everlasting life
29:44Amen
