00:00We're back now with an eye-opening edition of our Today's Checklist.
00:03According to the NIH, the National Institutes of Health, lung cancer causes more deaths among
00:08women than breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers combined.
00:12Well, the disease often is associated with smokers, but lung cancer in non-smokers,
00:17particularly younger women, is actually on the rise.
00:21Shira Kupperman-Bowler is a lung cancer survivor who never smoked.
00:25We'll talk to her in just a moment, but first, here's her story.
00:28How are you feeling?
00:29I feel great.
00:31You feel great?
00:31I feel great.
00:32I ran six miles the morning of my scan, and I was back to running six miles just five weeks
00:36later.
00:36Amazing.
00:37I mean, you've never smoked.
00:39No.
00:40You say this low-dose CT scan saved...
00:42Port, let's go back to what we just heard in that story there, this notion that for such
00:46cancers that really affected older men primarily, that's no longer the case.
00:52No, it's not.
00:53Maybe expand those guidelines.
00:55...cancer, and I'm so glad you're raising awareness about it, because we don't hear about
00:59it as much.
01:00There aren't lung cancer marches that you hear about all the time.
01:03Yeah, you're right.
01:04Why do you think that is?
01:05I mean, is there an occupational hazard?
01:07And the answer is no, no, no, no.
01:09And my mom is a breast cancer survivor.
01:11They say, can I help you drive the kids?
01:13What can I make you for dinner?
01:14You're right.
01:14There is a stigma that's attached to it.
01:16What do we know, Dr. Port, about some of the contributing factors?
01:20Very eye-opening.
01:21Shira, Dr. Port, thank you so much for being here with us this morning.
01:24One Scan Saved My Life.
01:26It is available today.

01:37So you play, Kira, you decide to, you're going to host this, this, you don't think comedy.
01:43Well, you should.
01:45Obviously.
01:45What was it about this that you said, this is an interesting take.
01:49It is smart.
01:50David Lindsay Hebert wrote it.
01:51He's so brilliant.
01:52It is so of the moment.
01:54Switch gears a bit because you have a new children's book coming out, kind of taking you back to
01:57your princess days.
01:59Yes, sort of.
02:00It's not a Tiana book this time.
02:01It is called a fun and it's rhyming.
02:05And I think that every child...
02:06A lot of people think, and I know Dylan can speak to this in a sense, as can you, Craig,
02:10is that writing a children's book is not the easy...
02:13People think, oh, it's some pictures, words, blah, blah, blah.
02:16But it's a lot of work.
02:18I loved it.
02:19You've thought about opening a children's bookstore?
02:21Yes.
02:22That sounds lovely.
02:23That's a great idea.
02:25So much fun to me.
02:26I'd take my kids.
02:27Good.
02:27I hope you do.
02:29It's always great to see you, Anika.
02:31Can I just say one more thing real quick?
02:32I just want to say that the balusters...
02:33There you go.
02:34I love that.
02:35Well, the balusters now player.
02:37If you're in the city, stop by.
