00:05it's the summer of football or soccer to some of you but we're making sure you do not forget about
00:12giants football so in today's episode of blue rush we're going to talk about the major storylines
00:19of the summer for the giants going into july's training camp which kicks off down in west
00:25virginia let's bring in our giants beat writer for the post my co-host the man the coolest man on
00:31the
00:31beat paul schwartz patrick ricard you are writing about him today thursday as we speak it's going
00:38to be out uh in today's uh uh new york post you got an article on juggernaut patrick ricard pancake
00:45pat
00:46whatever you want to call him paul i think he is the giants key acquisition this free agency in terms
00:53of helping this run game and easing a lot of things on jackson dart cam scadaboo and tyrone
00:59tracy what is it and i know we haven't seen uh uh the right sample size because they're only
01:04in um i guess pajamas helmets but what is it about patrick ricard that has stood out to you so
01:12far
01:12in that signing yeah you're absolutely right they didn't add running backs right they added a right
01:18guard in cc maui noah and they added a fullback so that's what they hope will be improvements to
01:24the run game well it's interesting you've been around the locker room a lot do you think that chris
01:28manhurst is a big guy yes really when you look at him right that's a big dude right he's like
01:34what
01:34six three six four okay so he's the same height i think as patrick ricard okay he's listed at 235
01:44i'm like but manhurst is a big guy ricard is listed as 300 pounds yeah bigger guy right bigger guy
01:52um i
01:52was talking to we had an availability a couple of weeks ago with the assistant coaches i was talking
01:56to willie taggart the running backs coach and i asked him something about patrick ricard and then
02:01i kind of hesitated and he kind of looked at me and i said is he in your room and
02:07he said no
02:09he's he's in he's in the tight end room he's not in the running back room and i said oh
02:13yeah
02:13patrick ricard is really not a running back he's got 11 rushing attempts in nine years he's really a
02:18tight end so um look this was the most obvious and predictable signing after john harbaugh was hired
02:25right he's going to get his fullback who spent the last nine years with him in in baltimore he's going
02:31to bring him to the giants most teams don't have a guy who's a classic fullback they have an h
02:36back or a
02:36tight end like chris manhurst who's also a blocker who kind of is a move tight end who will who
02:42will
02:42block for you but ricard is a out and out fullback he's big um and you're right we can't see
02:48them you
02:49know walking around in shorts and t-shirts in in otas there's no sense of the physicality of that he
02:55will bring uh the first three or four days in training camp we'll get a little taste of it once
03:00the pads come on we'll get a big taste of it we'll get a whole meal to see that and
03:04i'm very excited to
03:05see him because we know you know he's got 40 something receptions in his career um he doesn't
03:10carry the ball he says he likes to do it but you know he's just not going to do it
03:14very often maybe
03:15a little bit on third and one maybe you know as the up back they'll give him the ball maybe
03:19they
03:19didn't do that a lot of baltimore you know when you have derrick henry and lamar jackson you know
03:24even patrick card said you know i can't complain they're they're all better than me get this stuff you
03:29know i mean but yeah aren't you interested in seeing um and also you know you know greg roman
03:34is here greg roman you know handled the running you know the running situation you know as a as a
03:41you know run game coordinator type thing in baltimore he's here now with the giants so it meshes very well
03:47together and um you know the giants run and want to run the ball and patrick card is a guy
03:53who
03:53specializes in letting others run the ball here's the thing paul like i didn't need to see any
03:59physicality this spring when it came to him we have what eight years of him being what six time all
04:06pro making the pro bowl multiple times i did a breakdown on him when when we they signed him um
04:13and you just saw whether it was linebackers or safeties or corners you saw business decisions
04:21being made when he's clearing the way for guys like derrick henry and uh some of the other guys
04:27in that in that ravens backfield what impressed me this spring was not the physicality because we
04:34didn't get to see it it was the finesse it was the way you i got to see six three
04:40three hundred
04:41something plus move move in space move through holes guide you know tyrone tracy jr and cam scadaboo
04:49that practice we saw scat out there you saw the way scat was able to put his hand on ricard's
04:55back
04:55and then uh ricard get up to the second and even third level and run run with those linebackers so
05:03it takes me back to 2007 when you know the giants when we were able to go and grab madison
05:09hedgecock
05:09and just think about what he did for earth wind and fire and that running back room where this is
05:15madison hedgecock 12.0 like you know the iphone updates you know if you don't update your iphone
05:23it messes up if it my iphone wouldn't work right now if i didn't have the patrick ricard update and
05:30and be able to do the things that you could be able to do and and with him in that
05:36backfield and like
05:37you said he's he can catch the football madison hedgecock could he could catch but they didn't
05:41target him you saw a lot of the play action leaking tight ends to the flat leaking having isaiah likely
05:49in the tight ends running crossing routes deep overs but then there's also that element on a third and
05:55short or a third and mid leaking that fullback out to the flat as well and he's a guy that
06:02can catch it
06:03get upfield and get that first down for you so i think i think that is going to be
06:09i love the likely signing but i think the patrick ricard signing is what's going to bridge the
06:15passing game and the running game together because they have to be able to run the football
06:21to ease up on jackson dart until we find what we have with the wide receiver room until malik
06:27neighbors gets back yeah i mean look in training camp once they put the pads on it's going you know
06:33watching him and what did they do when the inside linebacker right they got much bigger with all
06:38well recent tremaine edwards so that's going to be fun right that's going to be fun seeing you know
06:44the clash of titans kind of thing when he's paving the way and those big linebackers uh you know that
06:50will be worth watching tyrone tracy i talked to him at the um at the brian burns softball game which
06:55you you know probably you're still recovering from as far as your uh your your larynx and your voice
07:00box right from from hyping up the crowd and he said um tyrone tracy said i told him you do
07:07what
07:07you do and i'm going to make you right i'm going to do my best to make sure you look
07:11good because
07:11you're 300 pounds i know a lot of dudes aren't going to want to block you yeah you know so
07:16um and
07:17i'm not going to want to be blocked by you he said i told pat me and you were going
07:20to make each
07:21other a lot of money we'll see you know patrick ricard was signed he's already the highest paid
07:26pure fullback in the league that's what john harbaugh thinks of him um so yeah this is
07:31something i would think you know tracy and look scatterboo is a big dude too he's a power back
07:37you have ricard and you have scatterboo um fun you know fun stuff uh subtle but fun stuff i hate
07:45what
07:45i'm about to say but because you have that running back room that you just mentioned when they go to
07:51team run and they break up and go seven on sevens and they're doing team run on another field i'm
07:58actually going to pay attention to team run now because i want to see ricard on an iso block with
08:04arville reese i want to see him go up against tremaine edmunds i'll watch for a couple plays but then
08:11i have
08:11to turn and fade and look at seven on sevens because we have to see what this wide receiver room
08:18can look like without malik neighbors and you when we're talking about the topics you said he must
08:25return to full health in top form but by when paul when do you need to see i mean obviously
08:33week one
08:33we would love to see him there but for you when do you start hitting the panic button if you
08:39don't
08:39see him out there at practice full go well you know my point was and i wrote about that in
08:46the post
08:46it was on our website it's on i think it's at the top of the nfl website right now is
08:50that
08:51they have some nice weapons they added some things they had some guys coming back you know they look
08:56they signed the three veterans right you know juju smith schuster odell beckham uh junior uh braxton
09:02berrios we'll see what happens with those guys they signed darnell mooney and calvin austin
09:06they have darius slayton coming back you know so i i'd say you know likely a tight end but he's
09:11going
09:12to be catching the ball a lot theo johnson's there they have like i think a collection of nice
09:16targets but there's nobody there that keeps a defensive coordinator up at night in my view
09:22right now so for this passing game to be to to cross that threshold to like oh damn you know
09:30this is
09:30something really special with jackson darts development it's got to be malik neighbors he is
09:35the superstar potentially of this group he's the guy that's going to command doubles and things like
09:41that and have you know safeties looking over the top every time and lurking and saying we can't let
09:45him isoed with a cornerback so um when look as soon as possible but i am i fully expect that
09:54when we
09:54report to um you know the april 29th the first practice at greenbriar and in white sulfur springs
10:00west virginia that neighbors will not be on the field will he be on um you know will he be
10:06on uh pup
10:08um sure i would think so will he get back at some time in training camp i would hope so
10:12i'm not sure
10:14will he pay in any preseason games i doubt it so to me if he's not on the field week
10:18one against the
10:19cowboys i don't hit the panic button but i need to know that he is going to be he's on
10:24a trajectory
10:25that if he stays healthy after he comes back he can play in 14 or 15 games that's the main
10:31thing
10:31they need him look he played four games last year right he played less than a half with jackson dart
10:36as
10:36the quarterback that can't happen he is the difference maker he needs to be he needs to be
10:42back in form and in shape and in gear that you know that that he's taking off from his rookie
10:49season
10:49and what happened last year was just you know a blip on his screen um you know he's he's you
10:55know if
10:55you would ask me right now you got to list five keys players to the season you know would he
11:02be one
11:02two or three yes he would be in my top three right now yeah i would put him at one
11:06you you have to put
11:08him at one because when we talk about jackson dart stepping into that second year we look at what
11:13caleb williams was able to do you had uh dj moore you look at a lot of these wide receivers
11:18uh you look
11:19at like a josh allen and when did josh allen take that leap when he got stefan diggs it's i
11:25mean it's
11:26it's peanut butter needs jelly you know to make it uncrustable like jackson dart is going to need
11:31his number one wide receiver and until then i just have i still have a question mark in that room
11:38and
11:38i love but but it's not a question mark of disrespect it's a question mark of opportunity
11:44and they basically told you if you're a young guy in that room and let's say you're undrafted guy or
11:50one
11:50of the young guys they basically told you what they thought about your chances of getting on the
11:57field against dallas that first game and then going out to uh la in that second game they're basically
12:06telling those young guys are like like the bull collins that's coming back from injuries uh uh dylan
12:12cambrey who who you know you've got a shot to make the team but you've got an outside shot you've
12:17got
12:17to go take it from one of these vets because i don't have time to teach you how to run
12:22the route
12:23or why you need to be in this spot or how to come back to the football the only one
12:27that gets that
12:28grace is malachi fields because we traded up to go get him and you see him getting individual coaching
12:34from every offensive coach that's out there but they brought in those three vets because now we're
12:41talking about terminology and picking up uh playbook and picking up the the the x's the o's and the y's
12:49why you have to be somewhere i don't have to explain the why all i have to do is tell
12:54odell
12:54hey remember back when you were here we ran it like this i need you in that second window because
13:00of
13:01this you're talking to juju smith schuster matt nagy they know the same dialect language braxton
13:07burials more of a special teams guy but if something happens to calvin austin the third then
13:12you're that kind of that that that joker wide receiver that can do all the you uh all the jet
13:18sweeps and things like this i can't explain to you why i need you in that spot you gotta already
13:25know
13:25because of years and reps of experience so everyone is feeling it when i talk about that
13:32how important it is for that offense to come out firing on game one and game two so malik neighbor
13:42like we we don't know and it's not something you want to rush back but when i talk about malachi
13:48fields
13:49paul i think he's going to get his opportunity early and i think that wherever they're at everyone's at
13:56working out and all and running their routes i think malachi fields need to be bunked up with
14:02jackson dart wherever jackson dart is i would i would live in his basement if i'm malachi fields i live
14:08in
14:08the guest house if i could because i need to be caught up because they're going to be a lot
14:12expected
14:14from him from day one outside of isaiah likely paul who do you think leads the team in receptions
14:21after those first two prime time games which receiver
14:27based on what i saw this spring calvin austin right did the ball come to him a lot a lot
14:33a lot
14:34right yeah yeah he seems very accessible um you know it's shorter or intermediate routes slot stuff
14:43i mean that would be my guess if there's no malik neighbors look malik neighbors two years ago was
14:48targeted what 170 times yeah right it was too much it was it was it was it was passing game
14:54desperation you know i mean look if you if i asked him that i don't think he would say it
15:00was too much
15:00but you know what he might say you know i mean there were times they were just throwing the ball
15:04up to me
15:04and it was you know a low low percentage i was gonna i was gonna make the completion so um
15:10spreading
15:10the ball around is fine i have no issue with that um you know darius layton we have not seen
15:16this
15:16this spring he's coming back from sports hernia surgery they say he'll be fine he probably will
15:20be fine um but it's just you know you know wide receivers right malik is the you know it's the
15:27sixth
15:27pick in the draft he it's at times as a rookie was like wow that's why they picked him yep
15:32just
15:32tremendous and and um you forget i mean i i the gist of my article was you forget sometimes you
15:39forget
15:40because he wasn't here all last year we've never we didn't really see him with jackson dart at all
15:44so jackson dart was trying to make do with a lesser group so now you give him one of the
15:50best
15:50bright young receivers in the game with his ability to do improv in you know in in the pocket
15:57and malik neighbor's ability to kind of just you know get open and and just out work guys and out
16:03leap guys and out run guys i mean malik pretty much has it all as a wide receiver when he's
16:08healthy
16:08so it's you know like i said before it's not so much oh my god he has to be there
16:13the first two
16:13weeks it's when he gets back he stays on the field and then he show he doesn't have to show
16:20it in
16:20game one right it takes a little or game two but by the book for the bulk of the season
16:24he is the
16:25wide receiver we think he is that's what the giants will need and you know that is something
16:30we were cheated out of last year we just didn't see it you know we everyone was so excited week
16:34four dart makes his first start they're oh and three and they beat the undefeated three and
16:40no charges right you know scatter who had a big game and oh by the way malik neighbors goes down
16:45with a season-ending injury you know it's like that's when the you know the giants can't have
16:49nice things everyone was thrilled with the win and jackson dart and now malik neighbors is out so
16:56you know what it is when a guy's out he's out he doesn't exist he needs to exist and be
17:00their best
17:00receiver that's what he needs to do and another thing about that game remember he had two catches in
17:05that opening drive they went down and scored on that opening drive and there was one where
17:10jackson dart kind of bought a little bit of time we got to see the mobility on display and then
17:15hit
17:15malik in the second window on a basic route malik gets up does the little dance and i believe one
17:21or
17:21two plays after that jackson dart scores gets into the end zone everyone was riding a high because you
17:27were seeing you you saw what this offense could look like it's like oh my gosh we've been waiting for
17:34this and then it's like it's like from the the movie the water boy oh no we suck again like
17:39you
17:39know when he went down and that was the first deflation of the uh of the season uh quick mention
17:46i think we i have to mention it and it transitions us into the next topic jalen hyatt looked good
17:52throughout the spring as well ladies and gentlemen a lot of people going to be in our at mentions like
17:57why would you mention him jalen hyatt looked good don't count him out remember this is a coaching
18:02staff that has came in and took on and has taken on joe shane's projects or joe shane's players that
18:11people are saying hey you drafted evan neal uh in the top 10 overall he didn't work out well they
18:20re-signed him to no guarantee money but he's still here jalen hyatt another guy he's still here he's
18:27making plays in the spring another guy drafted in the first round made some plays his rookie year
18:34deontay banks had a interception had ran step for step with some guys throughout the spring
18:41you bring in a denard wilson as your new defensive coordinator who has a defensive background a defensive
18:47background and is a no nonsense type guy can deontay banks be salvaged is what you wrote on the text
18:57message what do you think so far just from what you've seen from tay both on the field and how
19:04he's kind of carried himself throughout the course of the spring as well i think it's it's a really
19:11really fascinating scenario right um that that that look you've seen him on the field all the time
19:18physically perfect right six foot two 200 pounds can run is strong is explosive um showed some signs
19:26in with wink martindale's defense as a rookie of like okay i can see why they drafted him number one
19:31you've got to clean up some things he's got ability last two years have been zero um you know more
19:36zone
19:36less press man coverage which is what he was drafted to do but that's not an excuse you know i
19:42i don't
19:43think he's been as mature as he needs to be he hasn't hustled on the field uh you know we've
19:48seen
19:48blatant examples of him kind of giving up on a play no good unacceptable so you know he's one of
19:54those
19:55guys when when john harbaugh was hired you know i'm thinking to myself does john harbaugh look at this
19:59and say you know what i watched that tape i'm gonna make a statement here and cut the guy you
20:05know i mean
20:05because that's not what we want that's not we're about and i'm gonna say look not personal but um
20:11that's not the kind of tape that my players put on the field so we're moving on
20:15he could have done that i mean you know he would have needed joe shane to sign off on that
20:19but if he
20:19just said i don't want to coach this guy then deontay banks wouldn't have been here um john
20:25harbaugh didn't say that john harbaugh said yeah i like the guy coming out as as a as a you
20:29know
20:29out of maryland as as a first round pick and now we have our hands on him and new defensive
20:35coordinator new defensive backs coach new cornerbacks coach all trying with him he doesn't
20:40make a lot of money he's in the last year of his contract obviously they did not pick up his
20:44fifth
20:44year option so i talked to addison lynch the new cornerbacks coach right um the other a couple weeks
20:50ago and i was talking to him alone and i said when you look at deontay banks just look at
20:55him do you
20:56see why he was a first round pick and addison lynch you would have liked this um brand he said
21:03one word
21:04four syllables and he stretched them out to sound like a sentence he said absolutely you know like
21:13yeah i see why he was a first round pick and he said we we i watched all his tape
21:18addison lynch said
21:19you know he's the first year cornerbacks coach and he said we tried to show him where his consistency
21:25consistency was not there he wasn't consistently lining up fast he wasn't consistent with his feet
21:31um and so we showed him it's not that you can't do this it's that you are not consistent so
21:37that's
21:38what they've been harping on and um you know addison lynch said he has all the intangibles you see his
21:43body he's big fast he can tackle he can jump he can catch this is you'll like this this will
21:48put a
21:49smile on your face so it's my job to put him in the best positions to be able to bring
21:53those
21:54intangibles out all the time mama and daddy gave him a lot of skills so it's my job to make
22:01mama and
22:02daddy's skill set shine on the field on sundays we'll see does deontay banks have it in him have
22:10it in his heart and his mind and his soul to reclaim his career physically he can do it if
22:15he stays healthy
22:16um there's a lot of competition right you know they got uh boston adibo they signed greg newsome
22:22they drafted colton hood they stay uh they still have drew phillips so there's no pathway for him
22:28to start certainly can he do it you can't have too many cornerbacks i think it's going to be
22:33fascinating i really do um a talented kid who just hasn't worked out can this new coaching staff get
22:41it in his head this is your last chance and you better make it good well the fact that they
22:45said and
22:45they watched those plays and they broke it down and had that type of detail you wonder if wink kind
22:51of did the same and had the details had to hit the way that he coached and approached how he
22:57tried
22:57to get tape banks or get the most out of a tape banks but then you get to a shane
23:02born you you wonder
23:04if those details weren't there because these top level top tier athletes they want to take their game
23:10to another level paul they want to be coached well the great ones want to be coached they want the
23:16detail because after a certain point yeah you're the best athlete out of maryland but now you get to
23:21the nfl everybody can run everybody's big fast and strong and he had the success or some sort of
23:28success his rookie year and then you bring in a new coordinator and then you he could be looking at
23:34it
23:34like well what is this what is this guy doing and you could you could start comparing him to the
23:40d coordinator that wanted you that drafted you well wink had me doing this shane's doing that well wink
23:47had me wanting to press shane has me playing off the ball and you can start to tell yourself a
23:52story
23:52now you've got an accomplished coaching staff all of them across the board have credentials that have
23:59come in and set you down and on top of that they've brought in even more than enough competition
24:05to cut you replace you sit you down put you on the practice squad now they put the ball in
24:11your court
24:12they're saying you got no money you've got no like you've got nothing no equity in this but sweat equity
24:19your sweat equity is going to either one make the team to get you on the field three stay on
24:27the field
24:27how consistent can you be because the opportunity is there for you so that is fascinating the first
24:34round picks they get all the opportunities in the world but this is the opportunity of a lifetime
24:39for this guy this is not like an eli apple type opportunity you got a new coach that come in
24:46a proven
24:46a proven head coach that has come in and is giving you a reprieve or giving you a stay of
24:52execution
24:52and you got the defensive coordinator to go with it that is i mean if i was to say
24:59tate banks leads the team interceptions this year what would you say to that
25:06we'll see right well it's like a we'll see no no i i i would say that um that um
25:12the new york post
25:14needs to make drug testing mandatory that's what i would say no he's not going to lead the team in
25:18interceptions you know he look he's not gonna the thing is you can you can put him on the team
25:24right look you we all know cornerbacks you need a million of them right yeah you need a million of
25:28them when guys get hurt nobody gives a damn right you know if one guy goes down you got to
25:34put this
25:34guy on the field nobody gives a damn oh well he they're going to target him right away yeah right
25:39they're going to throw at him and throw at him and throw at him and if you're just like you
25:42know you
25:43your right tackle goes down and you put some kid in there they're going to attack him right away and
25:48nobody cares that he didn't play he didn't practice that position nobody cares they're
25:53going to go after you and they're going to maul you so deontay banks doesn't have to start he has
25:58to make the team you know we showed you know he can do kickoff returns right he was pretty good
26:03at
26:03it last year he's really good so he can have a role on special teams now he's not going to
26:06be on
26:07the team because he can be a kick returner he's just not he has to be a defensive player um
26:11and i
26:12don't think he's really a slot guy i just don't think that's his body type to be a slot guy
26:16so
26:16he's an outside corner so he can be their third or fourth corner he can be on the team he
26:22doesn't
26:22cost a lot of money he can return some kicks and he can and you know what god forbid maybe
26:27once in
26:27a while he's on the team and he's inactive on a game day you know okay that's what happens
26:33sometimes but if he makes the team and they think he can play and then he will get a chance
26:38to play
26:38because that's what happens guys get hurt and you get a chance and if he does and he gets better
26:43and better then either he he will stick around next year or he's a free agent at 25 years old
26:5026 years old who's healthy and big and strong and fast and somebody will want him so it's all there
26:57for him you know i i don't think it's just about well they did just the defensive system changed and
27:03what could he do about it i don't think he was mature as he needed to be and i don't
27:06think he looked
27:07in the mirror at all times and says holy you know what i've got to pick this up and i
27:12can't show that
27:13on the field anymore you know you know i just think that's true um so i i think it's all
27:20there
27:20for him and if he's if he's in the right frame of mind his body is fine and um um
27:26if he doesn't
27:27make it no one's gonna look at his coaching staff and they say they failed beyond the bank because
27:30that's all there is to it he if he comes back has a solid season i could be potentially one
27:36of the
27:36best comeback stories i don't want to say in giants history but giants recent history you know
27:41it'd be it'd be pretty cool to see this kid you know kind of grow up and watch him grow
27:46up between
27:46our eyes and have some sort of success because we've seen it before uh another major storyline of
27:52the summer jackson dart not so much what he's doing uh in terms of political rallies or anything like
27:59that but is he going to be able to protect himself in year two you got cc mawanoa to kind
28:07of sure up
28:08that offensive line you brought in patrick ricard as we talked about to help a run game that was what
28:13top 10 last year to kind of take a little ease off of him we talked about malik neighbors can
28:18he
28:18come back can the receivers make some plays for him we're tired of seeing him do it all on his
28:23own
28:24and part of trying to do it all his own he was trying to be lamar jackson last year running
28:29around
28:29a little bit too much and not so much the running aspect of it we love the way he was
28:34able to be a
28:34dual threat but it's at the end of the run trying to take on linebackers and safeties like you are
28:41patrick ricard do you think this coaching staff has come in and and and let jackson dart know how much
28:52they need him healthy and on the field well as you know brandon from being there all the time
28:59they hate this topic right yeah jackson dart hates talking about it brian dayball hated talking about
29:06it mike kafko when he took over did not like talking about it this is i mean you know you
29:11could see dart
29:12kind of having smoke out of his ears and think saying you know have you guys watched me play in
29:16high
29:16school and in college this is what i do i run and and what i shouldn't care enough if it's
29:22if it's third and six and and i know i can get four yards i shouldn't dive and do everything
29:27i can to
29:28get the first down you know this is football what are you guys talking about but he spent too much
29:32time in a blue tent and he's been he was hurt and he had concussion issues and it just got
29:37to be a
29:38yin yang kind of a an uncomfortable thing now this coaching staff um you know i talked a couple
29:45weeks ago brian callahan who's a pretty darn accomplished quarterbacks coach right i mean people did not
29:51think that he would come to the giants to be the quarterbacks yeah maybe offensive coordinator he's
29:56been an offensive coordinator in the league he's been a quarterbacks coach successful one joe burrow
30:00gives him a lot of credit in cincinnati and he was the head coach of the titans for two years
30:05and now
30:05john harbour hires him not as a coordinator but as the quarterbacks coach so uh brian callahan said some
30:13really fascinating things about this and and i never i didn't think of it this way but tell me
30:20after you hear this what you think about this i think it was a fascinating thing now he said you
30:25know he said all the things that a lot of a lot of people have said before you know there's
30:29got to be
30:29an awareness when you put yourself at risk when to get out of bounds when to do this he said
30:33you watch
30:34them and you watch the things that um went on over the course of the year and you get to
30:39the point
30:39where hey look it's a first and 10 i don't need you to lower your shoulder and try to run
30:44through
30:44somebody just get on the ground or get out of bounds and we'll move on to the next play okay
30:49he
30:49said i never want to take that ability you know that running ability because i asked him i said you
30:54know um that you know jackson ran a lot last year and and brian callahan said yes and he ran
31:02well
31:02so it's not like it's not like he didn't run well and we don't want him to run okay but
31:06that's the
31:07stuff that you expect this brandon i thought was really interesting that he said when he looked
31:11at it he said that um i think what was really great for jackson last year from a toughness
31:20perspective is that he proved to all of his teammates and people in the league he's a really
31:26tough player and that there's a time and place and he's already proved that so we can move on from
31:33that yep i never thought of it that way that he can tell jackson look we have it on tape
31:40we know
31:41you can put your head down and lower your shoulder and get the first down and nobody on this team
31:46last
31:46year questioned that wow jackson will sell out for us okay you've done that you don't have to prove it
31:53to us anymore you don't have to prove to the opponents that this dude is a tough guy so you
32:00can
32:00still be a tough guy but you don't have to prove it anymore you can do it once in a
32:05while but you
32:06don't have to prove it so we can move on from that i think that probably resonated with jackson and
32:12we'll
32:12see how that you know how that manifests itself on the field i thought that was a really interesting
32:17way for brian callahan to bring that out you proved it now we can move on i just typed that
32:24into my google
32:25translate and in what i hear my in my head was that translated to hey be tough not dumb
32:34be tough not dumb like you said you have proved it it's like back in college i remember this incident
32:41down at umass where we had this kid who just thought he could get drunk and just fight everybody
32:46had the beer muscles and it's like we're standing there we're outside we're uptown
32:51outside of antonio's pizza and still just it's just it's like one or two of us and you're just
32:57popping off to like a whole crew that's not tough that's dumb you want us you want us to get
33:05jumped
33:05because you want to be the cool kid you're drunk and you can't handle your liquor that's football is
33:11absolutely different but basically brian callahan just told him i along with a lot of people need you
33:19healthy because you're going to make us a lot of money you're going to make a lot of people a
33:23lot
33:23of money and i don't take a quarterback's coaching job to stay here and be a quarterback's coach no i'm
33:31going to be the guy that's going to get a lot of credit for your development and on the next
33:36cycle
33:36of head coaching jobs or offensive coordinator jobs i'm going to be at the top of the list they're
33:42going to be talking about me on blue rush they're going to be talking about me on nfl network on
33:47first
33:47take when i come up for a job they're going to say look at jacks they're going to put the
33:52numbers
33:53on the board full screens graphics look at jackson darts development from progression from year one
34:00to year two who's the quarterback's coach that was that had hands-on experience on that development
34:08and progression brian callahan and then you get into the meetings paul for maybe what's a head
34:14coaching job oc job well how are you going to work with this young quarterback that's coming
34:19archie manning or how would you work with this quarterback uh that's coming up in the draft or
34:24the caller murray or somebody or sam darnel that quarterback where you need to fix them well this
34:30is what i told jackson and this is how i developed jackson now you get the job so my next
34:38mortgage
34:38jackson where my kids go to school next whether it's private school public school that all falls
34:45on you and staying healthy and your development so be tough be yourself be skillful and athletic
34:54do your dances we love all of it just don't be dumb bro just don't be dumb that's what i
35:01got
35:01you don't have to prove it you don't have to don't have to prove it you don't have let me
35:05ask you
35:06something was there ever a time when you were in your you know first you know nfl camps where you
35:11thought to yourself i gotta prove something i mean i know you had to prove you could play but prove
35:16your
35:16toughness yeah you know what i mean that you know what i gotta prove to these guys i'll lay out
35:21for
35:21them or whatever i mean was there an example that you can remember about that it was it i gotta
35:25prove
35:25to you it was in the practice after training camp when we got back to uh giant stadium remember we
35:31used to
35:31practice in that that field outside of giant stadium and i i tried it was a blocking it was
35:37it was basically like a run period but i tried to get physical with sam madison because i'm like okay
35:42it's the last part of camp i've got a show and i was struggling on special teams hitting wedges and
35:48all
35:49that so i've got to show that i could be that big body receiver who can step in for a
35:54plaxico burst or an
35:55mighty tumor and i tried to get physical with sam madison and i remember he grabbed my face back
36:00face mask and was like young bleep it's like don't you ever and then like all the dbs came over
36:05jabril
36:06wilson and all all those dudes came and tried to like swarm up on me but to me that was
36:11like that was
36:11my moment wrong person because mad dog was a vet and maybe i should have picked somebody else that
36:18maybe like uh uh kevin dockery or maybe aaron ross or something but you picked the wrong guy but you
36:24had to you i had to try and show that let me get physical and one here but that's the
36:29vet trying
36:29to just be smooth with it go tag off on a guy let's just get through practice let's get to
36:34the
36:34season who is this young guy being yes yep and trying to make yes i'm on the team i'm on
36:40the team
36:40absolutely and i'm you know i'm checking off this practice and i'm doing my thing and i don't need
36:46you know this but do you think sam madison respected you after that a little bit or did he think
36:52you were you were a jerk i think i i don't i don't necessarily say it was more like a
36:56respect thing
36:57i think he he pulled me to the side and was just like i get what you're doing like i
37:02get it but
37:03young boy you got to learn how to practice like you got to learn how to practice so from now
37:07from
37:07there on out it was because he knew i had to do a job it was grab on and look
37:13like we're blocking look
37:15like i was being physical but just enough to be like all right you touch me but don't touch me
37:19too much
37:20like ease up off me because i got to get ready for a season so that was and the dbs
37:25you know they
37:25respected me and all after that because they knew after that they knew b london was going to run b
37:31london was going to give 100 and then you know so it was it was that we came to that
37:35mutual understanding
37:36for that but that's one thing that's trying to make the team this is trying to make a season this
37:40is trying to get a franchise out of the funk out of the mud we need you bro so be
37:45tough don't be dumb
37:47you are this team's jalen brunson and that transitions us into the next thing paul final
37:53thought because i call it the summer of football we got world cup everyone's still riding this high
37:59of this nicks craze 53 years this team it took for them to win a championship and you saw cam
38:07scataboo
38:07court side on the jumbotron when they're like who's in the house tonight i said who's in the house
38:14tonight and they put them up on celebrity road we saw jackson dart and his girlfriend and brian burns
38:20get on a jet and fly down to san antonio for the finals that's got to be infectious for this
38:28team
38:28somehow some way this nicks run has to be able to play into whether the giants can put a run
38:37together
38:37this year would you agree with that do you think this team can take anything away from what the nicks
38:44just did also john harbaugh first year coach and um you know in in with the giants and mike brown
38:50first year coach the nicks right yeah got a little something there look i i think whenever you know
38:56we haven't had many championships in the new york new jersey area you know we haven't but anytime you
39:01do then it leaks over to the other teams and people say oh well what can they learn from that
39:06what can they well you're probably going to learn teamwork and sacrifice and and and clutch play and all
39:11those things look the nicks had that you know in abundance obviously all that stuff um i think the
39:16main thing that these players on the giants and other teams can see from the nicks is that wow that's
39:24what happens when you win in this town holy smokes it is insane you know you can win other places
39:30but
39:30you win in new york that ticker tape parade is not like any other thing the the garden is not
39:36like any
39:36other any other building um have we seen that in metlife stadium we have not we've seen it in giant
39:42stadium well we saw it in metlife stadium a little bit right then nick they did um the um the
39:48giants
39:48won a playoff game at metlife right i guess in 2011 so we've seen some of this um but that
39:56can can
39:57can you can kind of feel some of that from the other team and you can say oh i want
40:01this so badly
40:01because i see how great it can be but i thought brian burns is really interested interesting
40:06because you know he went uh with jackson flew off to san antonio to see a game there he got
40:10that vibe
40:11um you know game one i guess it was and um um was it game two i forget but one
40:16of the games obviously
40:17the next one both games in san antonio the first two games and and brian burns was not just like
40:22yeah yeah yeah we can learn from the knicks he said i really don't know how they handle things
40:27you know within their own building of course we want to emulate their success because they made it
40:32all the way to the big dance but i can't really speak on the details of what they do or
40:37what they
40:37went through and i think that's perfect that's why brian burns is is you know such a great and
40:42developing leader is that yes we want what the knicks have but i can't say that we should emulate
40:49what they we we should be what they are he said i don't know what they are i'm not in
40:53their
40:54building i have sense of what they are and that is right you don't know that i always say to
40:58people
40:58you don't know what goes on inside behind people's closed doors in their home and you don't know what
41:03goes on really inside the closed doors of the of the of the team facility you know we have an
41:09idea
41:10and as reporters we try to find out as much as we can but only the knicks know what worked
41:16inside
41:16their building so perfectly you know with i'm sure hiccups along the way so brian burns is saying
41:22yeah we want what the knicks have but we have to do it our way and i think that's the
41:26message we
41:27have to figure out our way as the 2026 giants to to figure it out to get great success and
41:34then we
41:34have to implement implement that plan our way um but look it was darn exciting you know and for the
41:41whole city and i think for players to see that in this city um with the giants who've had so
41:47little
41:47success you know so much losing i think that is something that's a carrot that they can look at
41:53and say wow that's what happens when you win in this city i want a piece of that you win
41:58in this city
41:59regardless if you're eli manning you know you see where that takes you or you're a young practice
42:05squad player you get to be on blue rush with paul schwartz years later decades one other thing i
42:11forgot to talk to um i i talked to david tyree oh after the knicks won it you know because
42:16when og had
42:17that tip in one of the first things a lot of people thought was you know what that's the greatest
42:22play
42:23in new york history maybe since um tyree's helmet yes right yes i talked to david tyree about it and
42:29tyree said well i think mine is still number one and tyree is a huge nick fan i didn't realize
42:35you he
42:35grew up with a bomb squad poster of trent tucker and and johnny newman and gerald wilkins you know
42:41he loved the knicks back then loved them he's a nick guy he said i have loved kenny skywalker you
42:48know kenny skywalker then you're a real knicks fan right yes you know he was a first round pick
42:52who was kind of a bust with the knicks so you know so um he and it's also great he
42:56said his favorite
42:57player was charles oakley as a nick and he also liked anthony mason and and you know tyree he said
43:03i love me some bullies i love me some bullies you know he liked that's the kind of player he
43:08was
43:09right he was a little bit of a bully player and he said look when you win in new york
43:13there's nothing
43:14like it that's what og and the knicks are going to find out so that's that you know that's the
43:19message
43:19they can impart you know the guys you know they had harry carson and lt right come speak to the
43:24team
43:24they could certainly talk to these guys about look this is what new york and new jersey demands
43:29and when you win there's nothing better that's what david tyree can tell them and now that's what
43:34the knicks can show them um you know just great stuff for them to try to try to get some
43:40of that
43:40success all right they're going to get a chance to try and replicate that success with us being all
43:47about a month away from training camp which is down in west virginia paul we're gonna we're gonna keep
43:54the summer of football giants football going with next week we're gonna have another episode
