00:05are the giants better on paper right now coming out of the draft and going into otas and minicamp
00:12than they were at this point last year we're gonna break down the roster with our nfl reporter for
00:17the post ryan dunleavy uh all right ryan let's have some fun here man because they let some key
00:22pieces walk they brought some key pieces in this roster is kind of shaping out to be a really
00:28hardball looking isk roster i like to call it baltimore north uh let's get straight into this
00:34we'll start with the offense obviously we'll talk about the coolest position on in football that's
00:40the quarterback position last year it was russell wilson jamis winston fast forward to this year
00:46jackson dart going into year two and jamis winston upgrade or downgrade upgrade uh jackson dart was
00:55quarterback three last year he's quarterback one year two to year one to two is the time
01:01quarterbacks take a big jump we saw it last year with caleb williams and a bunch of guys from that
01:07draft class year drake may um so yes upgrade i'm expecting a better jackson dart than the exciting
01:12rookie a guy who just knows more about football and not just is a athlete running around uh same
01:19backup quarterback jamis winston and um yeah i mean third brandon allen's probably a downgrade
01:26from russell wilson but if it gets to qb3 you have major problems anyway all right let's uh get to
01:31the
01:31running back room before i get in trouble here uh last year it was tyrone tracy basically the same
01:37running back room but they did add patrick ricard so upgrade downgrade in that running back room
01:44we gotta tentatively say upgrade because of patrick ricard because i think the fullback will
01:50matter a lot in this offense and take some of the pressure off uh but i gotta see cam scadaboo
01:57be cam scadaboo like uh he's coming off a major leg injury like yes i'm gonna say upgrade because
02:05i'm assuming cam scadaboo is gonna pick up where he left off if it's not the same cam scadaboo then
02:11it's a downgrade they have ota i think they have their first ota today so i'm anxious to see if
02:16he's out there and how much he's doing you know how much he's able to do on that ankle but
02:21do you
02:21think and this is more of a fan question do you think this is the year that turbo miller makes
02:28the
02:28team over devin singletary no no no i don't no uh um i just don't i know uh look i
02:36think he's an
02:37exciting player too um clean slate can't hurt him right like he obviously had been pigeonholed as a
02:44practice squad guy and by the last staff so it can't hurt him but i think devin singletary is the
02:51veteran third guy he took the pay cut to be here uh i think maybe if they carry a fourth
02:56running back
02:57there's a spot for dante miller but i don't see him cracking the top three if the other three are
03:01the one key piece that i feel like that running back room is missing is that speed back that home
03:09run hitter and you know i think you know uh i love tyrone tracy jr scat and singletary but i
03:15think
03:15they're all three of the same kind of you know i think cam scadaboo can do what tyrone tracy does
03:20and vice versa so i would love to see that one guy to where whether it's a jet sweep motion
03:26you get some
03:26sort of funky package and he can even be a core special teamer but a guy he's just a ball
03:32in hand
03:32guy out of that running back room so hopefully someone emerges with that skill set within the
03:39training camp and makes the roster as that third running back as that guy that can fly let's go to
03:44receiver room because we could throw some tight ends in there uh obviously malik neighbors coming back
03:50from that acl surgery injury we don't know what he's going to be like at the start of the season
03:56darnell mooney comes in you draft malachi fields you have calvin austin you lose wandel robinson
04:03but you're also i'm missing i'm missing one more person uh i'm missing one more person off the top
04:09of my head calvin austin oh calvin austin you have calvin austin does the receiver room this year
04:16look more dangerous on paper at this point than it did last year and remember we're throwing the
04:22tight ends in there we're throwing the tight ends in there as well oh okay if we're gonna throw the
04:27tight ends in i'll say yes uh if we're just talking receivers i'm gonna say no because you lost wandel
04:33robinson and i don't know paint me skeptical of malik neighbors playing week one and the giants have all
04:41you know kind of pushed for like oh he'll be back in training camp color me skeptical
04:45so um if he's back then yes obviously uh and if you're counting the tight ends in yes because
04:53i'm expecting isaiah likely to probably be number two on this team uh in receptions and receiving
04:59yards so then yes i'll go to upgrade because now you're bumping theo johnson to a backup and but i'm
05:06not going to undersell for a second wandel robinson's uh impact departure 90 catches back-to-back
05:13years thousand yard receiver malik neighbors the uncertainty every giants fan wants to uh
05:18you know uh take a uh metaphor bird poop on darius slayton i think that's crazy i think once you
05:25count
05:25darius slayton out that's when uh he's at his best so i don't think he's done with this regime by
05:31any
05:32means um but coming off a rough year i i'd say yes upgrade if you're counting the tight end downgrade
05:39if
05:39you're not that receiver room only goes as far as malik neighbors so he has to be i mean by
05:45game
05:45three he has to have that mental because like we say all the time it's not the going up part
05:51i'm sure
05:51he can go up for the football it's when you're coming down if you're still worried what that knee
05:56is if it's going to hold up when you're on your way down coming down with that catch that mental
06:02part
06:02can mess with you in terms of bringing in and secure that catch so he has to i mean he
06:07has to feel like
06:08leak with all the ease in it by week three or it could be it could be a dangerous year
06:13for these
06:13wide receivers but i do think isaiah likely is a 50 catch tight end but without east like with ease
06:19i
06:19think he'll have 50 catches for sure yes now let's go to the offensive line because remember for years
06:26and years you know dave get them and said oh we've addressed the offensive line room for sure we got
06:31the
06:31hog mollies but they were ended up being hog wash last year they took a step in the right
06:37direction you add francis mawanoa you you retain uh re-signed jermaine illuminor better or worse
06:46this giant's offensive line on paper right now better better and that's better from what i thought
06:53was the best that had been in a decade brandon so uh on the upswing look i champion bringing greg
07:01van
07:01roten back because i'm a guy who believes in five offensive linemen chemistry is better than the
07:07sum of individual parts or whatever you know uh whatever that saying is the collective is better
07:13than the individual parts uh but you can't argue with the 10th pick in the draft a guy that scouts
07:19around the league have told me they think has an all pro caliber ceiling at guard uh was the best
07:25tackle in the draft uh illuminor hungry back at right tackle i thought that was a huge shining he
07:31was my number one free agent for the giants to retain and they retained him um so yeah a healthy
07:37andrew thomas uh which is probably the biggest thing the team needs at any position other than dart
07:43so yes i would say on and they have depth which they usually do not have uh you know daniel
07:50filele
07:51looked like the starter before they drafted uh malanoa so now he's a backup um uh they signed
08:00the guy lucas patrick veteran guy backup so they have guys who have played uh in the backup and then
08:08they have uh azudu and neil who they used to be starters for this team and they're like barely
08:13going to make the roster fringe guys so much better depth and with malanoa out added should be a better
08:20starting line too i'm very high on the giants offensive line and i think a lot of people
08:24should keep an eye on jc davis the the kid that they drafted in sixth round out of illinois he's
08:29a
08:29guy that could be a swing he could play tackle he could play guard kick him in and play guard
08:33as well
08:34and i got a chance to talk to him after he was uh drafted via skype and he he doesn't
08:39sound like a guy
08:40that just wants to come in and and kind of ease his way into a starting role he sounded like
08:47he wants
08:47to come in and take somebody's money he wanted to come in and take someone's job and obviously you're
08:53going to you know talk like that when you first get drafted but i know a lot of people a
08:57lot of
08:58people have been high on this kid so i definitely have put a circle around his name and you know
09:03i've
09:04rarely watched the offensive line during during training camps and stuff because it's if you don't
09:08have pads on it's hard to evaluate these guys but he's a guy that i'm gonna have to uh keep
09:13my eye
09:13on for sure all right let's riverside it this time let's go to the defense obviously we have to
09:19start with this defensive line room sexy dexy heads out to cincinnati i don't know how sexy it is
09:25out there i've never been out there uh but this giants interior defensive line room better or worse
09:33than it was last year yeah this is not going to be a popular answer with the fan base but
09:39downgrade
09:39uh like look i get it throw bodies at the position dj reader i thought saw a cool stat actually
09:46was it
09:47uh the second most defense double team defensive tackle behind dexter lawrence uh last year so that
09:54you know maybe maybe he will eat some of the space that dex did and free up some of the
09:59past rushers but
10:00look dexter lawrence is a three-time pro bowler you talk to coaches around the league that's somebody
10:04you scheme for i don't know with all due respect that dj reader and shelby harris are focal points
10:10of an offensive scheme i get it throw bodies at it they should be last year and the year before
10:16it
10:16was kind of decks and friends that may you know do you know jesse and the rippers from full house
10:22it
10:22was uh it was like decks and the rippers it was like who are these guys uh now you know
10:28the names
10:28and there should be more depth and it should be guys playing 50 60 percent and more fresh legs
10:33instead of decks in the fourth quarter worn down and fatigued and questions about his conditioning
10:39decks at his best is irreplaceable decks at his worst is still like a pretty good player
10:44so i'm gonna say downgrade but i do like the idea that they didn't just try to replace him with
10:50one
10:50guy they're throwing uh they're throwing the kitchen sink at the position here's the pushback that i have
10:56on that dexter lawrence loved him he's helped my kid before had a great celebrity softball game with
11:02license plate guy a couple years ago fan favorite but they were still ranked the 31st ranked run
11:11defense in the nfl with him so i mean all they got to do is get to 30th and that's
11:18an upgrade with
11:18these guys so i you know you can go to 32nd though the one thing i've learned in eight years
11:23covering
11:23the giants is you can always always go the wrong way glass half full half empty type guy conversation
11:29right there all right edge rushers are pretty much the same uh we can kind of just leave those guys
11:35out i think abdul carter is going to be a lot better in his second year uh but let's go
11:39to the interior
11:40linebacker position i think i already know your answer on this one they add tremaine edmonds
11:46and arville reese they lose bobby okara k upgrade downgrade
11:52on the field big upgrade don't underestimate bobby's leadership especially without decks in the
12:00building bobby was probably the next biggest leader or a next guy the next guy that everybody
12:07looked to until at least brian burns became kind of took on more of a vocal role uh midway through
12:12last year but play-wise should be a huge upgrade i mean bobby with all due respect was had a
12:18great
12:18first year here a not so good second year uh and then an up and down third year uh played
12:25his best
12:25actually at the end of the season um but edmonds should be on his own should be an upgrade he's
12:32younger uh and fresher legs and i uh you know good uh good against the run and then reese i
12:42mean the
12:42excitement's off the charts for what he could do is he gonna is he gonna rush on third downs is
12:47he like
12:47a micah parsons type uh is he gonna be all over the field uh i'm we're counting him as an
12:53inside
12:53linebacker but he could be three different places on three different snaps on first second and third
12:57down so uh i think off the charts upgrade uh play-wise it's uh it's a room that has to
13:04stay healthy
13:05because last year i think one thing that really hurt bobby okara k was micah mcfadden going down
13:11and there are even times i felt like micah mcfadden was outplaying him and bobby okara k's
13:17year two and that's no disrespect to bobby because you know he was still making plays but
13:21micah mcfadden showed that you know he was that fifth round pick that could step in and and he was
13:27thriving in weak martindale's defense so i think when he went down he now had the bobby okara k had
13:33to
13:33play with jerome musau who i didn't think was it was a starter he's more of a special teams guy
13:39and then like you said jesse uh jesse span on the pips or i forget what you said but that's
13:45kind
13:45of what that's what bobby okara k kind of had to go through as well but he wasn't a all
13:51pro uh
13:52player at his position like a dexter lawrence so that middle linebacker core really struggled last
13:59season and i think like you we mentioned tremaine edmonds and arvel reese but now there's depth now you
14:07can have some rotation with micah mcfadden and keep an eye on jack kelly he can be the micah
14:13mcfadden of this draft class so uh i mean you know are you high on jack kelly yeah i think
14:22he's got
14:23some pass rush ability 10 sacks in the big 12 he could be a specialist pad you know give him
14:28eight
14:28snaps a game or whatever on third and long maybe he's maybe he's an inside linebacking blitzing
14:33inside linebacker you make a great point about mcfadden brandon some i've been screaming about
14:38for years on this podcast which is the giants needed to turn their starters into backups like
14:44not just replace starters with starters or backups with backups they needed to take their starters
14:50and make them backups and that's how they would get better and that's what they did with micah
14:54mcfadden he's a guy you know can play if he has to start seven games or something because the
14:59injuries great you trust him uh and if not then he has he can be you know dynamic in a
15:04lesser role
15:05so like that's a perfect example of depth building you're not just swapping out a starter for a backup
15:11it's kind of like i was saying on the offensive line josh azuto used to be a starter now he
15:15might
15:15not make the team micah mcfadden was a starter at one time he was probably their best inside
15:19linebacker when bobby was struggling now he's the third guy so that's how you get a bet that's how you
15:24have a better roster yeah definitely i think that was the biggest upgrade the unit that got the
15:28biggest upgrade was the that interior linebacking corps uh bringing in tremaine edmonds and arville
15:35reese and then just have you like you said having michael mcfadden there as that insurance piece
15:39last but not least we go to what i feel as though one of the most underperforming units last season
15:49you know outside of that defensive line giving up you know whatever they gave up for the run
15:53but it was a secondary paulson adebo came in in his first year he kind of you know he had
15:58his
15:58moments but he kind of struggled against some of the top receivers in the league you lose cordell
16:03flott you bring in greg newsom the second you draft colton hood which a lot of people there are a
16:09lot
16:09of people that are high on this kid uh tay banks is there you wonder if denard wilson can get
16:16more out of him than a shane bone but i put you on the spot here this giant secondary oh
16:23yeah
16:23and you still have javon holland and uh and tyler newbin in at the safeties and uh andrew phillips
16:30as your nickel corner upgrade or downgrade from last year two weeks ago i would have told you a
16:37downgrade and now i'm gonna say an upgrade and that's how high my network of nfl people are on
16:44colton hood so uh i would have said it was a downgrade before him now i think it's an upgrade
16:51um let's put safety to the side because safeties are the same it's newbin and it's uh it's newbin
16:57and it's holland and it's now it's uh our darius washington in for uh dane belton basically so
17:03let's uh let's call that a wash and actually let's hope you get better play if you're the giant you
17:08hope
17:08you get better play out of holland and newbin same names but neither one had a very good year last
17:13year
17:14um so let's put them to the side just cornerback you're replacing cordell flott with uh greg newsom
17:21and colton hood obviously newsom's had some good years coming off a down year hood uh could have
17:27been a first round pick could have gone as high as 16 of the jets i heard so uh very
17:32positive very good
17:33value at 37 uh i expect he will win a job if not in training camp fair probably in september
17:40uh a
17:41starting job so um yeah i'm gonna say slight upgrade cordell flott was very good last year
17:47he deserved to get paid but he was kind of the one-year wonder guy who never stayed healthy
17:52they could never figure out if he was in the slot or on the outside and by the time they
17:57figured out
17:57what to do with them he was a free agent so uh if he plays like that he's a big
18:03loss if he regresses a
18:04little that it's easier to make up for him um kind of a one-year wonder guy i gotta see
18:09more out of him
18:10and i guess i'll have to watch tennessee to do it but yeah i think with hood here if hood
18:15is what my
18:15sources expect hood to be then i think it's a slight upgrade at corner and the same at safety
18:22and i i hope denard wilson gets colton hood caught up to speed like immediately or as fast as he
18:28can
18:28because you know you talked about uh cordell flott and what he brought and how good of a year solid
18:35year he had for them last year i think one of his biggest uh weapons or traits was his football
18:41iq like his chance to like you know rob play if you rob a smash route you act like you're
18:46covering
18:47the hitch and then you go and make a play on the corner route that's right there behind you he
18:51had
18:51a high football acumen and iq you want to get colton hood caught up to speed as as fast as
18:57possible
18:57but there are a lot of people i'm with you on this one there are a lot of people that
19:01like this kid
19:02and feel as though he could step in and i want to talk to cory webster about because they they
19:07kind
19:08of give me the same they kind of are the same corner to me because with the long arms like
19:13i was i
19:14was i was with uh uh colton and malachi malachi feels doing an interview with them now we're a lot
19:20bigger
19:20than he is like he is he's almost six foot like he's six foot ish but he's got some really
19:26long arms
19:27and that's the worst thing in the world uh as a wide receiver is a press corner who has who
19:35likes
19:35his speed who he was very confident in his speed but has long arms and wants to be super aggressive
19:42at the line of scrimmage so i can see him giving a lot of people a lot of fits at
19:47the line of scrimmage
19:48but when you get that football iq up then you're going to see this guy playing some uh some great
19:53football is deontay banks on the final 53 man roster yes i'll say yes um i don't know if he'll
20:05be on the november roster but i'll say yes he'll be on the week one 53 man roster right now
20:11i'd say
20:12he's corner four i don't know who would be nipping at his heels for corner four i'd have to see
20:17the team
20:17uh i don't know that there's anybody as athletically talented as him um so
20:24he's on a walkier now because they declined his fifth year option so he'll be motivated that has
20:28been a problem of his in the past uh so i do think he will be on the week one
20:34roster because
20:36talking to people around the league there's a lot of talent there and i don't think hardball
20:40if he wasn't willing to give up on evan neal's talent i can't see him giving up on deontay banks's
20:45talent is evan neal on the week one final no no he might be on the practice squad but no
20:51i don't think
20:52he'll be on the week one roster is jalen hyatt on the week one roster baby that's a tough one
20:59um
21:00i say no i say no i don't know if they'll be able to get anything for him like a
21:06seventh for a six
21:08kind of deal um round pick i'm obviously talking about uh i'd say no i'd say the malachi's fields
21:16draft pick might have pushed out jalen hyatt quick rookie camp moment from my rookie year with the
21:21giants i remember i came in with the suit i was like oh this is gonna be this is a
21:25business
21:25this is a business trip i'm here on business i go i just finished uh getting my physical i go
21:31to get
21:31my height weight you remember how the locker room and the facility was at meadowland stadium it was
21:38so everything was small you had to walk through the locker room to get to the weight room eli manning
21:43had just finished working out and he's sitting there at his locker and here i am in this suit
21:47and i walk and i look i turn the corner i look i'm like oh like my eyes i'm like
21:52oh my gosh yeah like
21:53eli manning and like he like caught me like like staring at him mesmerizing he gave me this like look
21:59like what like this look like why are you in a suit in two like why are you looking at
22:03me like in my head
22:05like and you know how his face how he can like scrunch up his face and looking like yeah i
22:10was like in my
22:10head i was like man who does dude think he is like but then i had to yeah but i
22:15knew who he was but
22:16yeah that was just that was just funny so good you know good luck to the rookies uh as they
22:20come out
22:20and embark on their nfl journeys uh but yeah i think everyone will agree with you they've just
22:26upgrades across the board when it comes to this roster special teams and this coaching staff so
22:32we'll see where they go with this we've got a lot of football and installation to be put in
22:37and not just the x's and o's but this is hardball's time to to instill that culture you know because
22:42right now every giants fan is feeling like who's got it better than us nobody so ryan dunleavy
22:49appreciate you hopping on with us for this blue rush my man thanks for having me brannock
22:54you
