00:00Hey, hey, he is
00:05We've never had a rescue go so wrong and honestly we handled it terribly
00:11Everything that could have gone wrong did to explain the absolute chaos
00:15Let's take you back to the very beginning when Ella first arrived home with Rollo
00:24Wow his markings are amazing
00:30So this is Rollo an 11-month-old French bulldog we just rescued so we are gonna bring him round
00:36the side
00:36Because the dogs are in here. We want to put him straight into the garden
00:40I just need you to go back there
00:42His face. Oh, he's so cute. He is so cute. Come on mate. Apparently he's amazing on the lead
00:48Yeah, he is. He's really good. Oh look his his markings are amazing
00:53We're first going to bring him into the garden with no dogs. All right, we're going to let him go
01:00Let him explore let him get all of the smells. Oh Rollo. Come on out of there. There's dog poop
01:06Good boy. You can see he's not nervous, which is good. It's looking nice and brave
01:11We've got tarp down because underneath here the dogs have absolutely destroyed the gardens
01:16We are going to let him explore the garden first and then we have a gate set up here
01:22Just so that he can meet the dogs between the gates first before actually in person because we're unsure of
01:28what is like with other dogs
01:29Hello, mate
01:31Oh, good boy
01:33Honestly, I cannot explain to you how soft he is
01:36He's literally like a teddy. Is it he?
01:39He's good. He looks nice and brave. I'm guessing you can pick him up and everything. Yeah. Yeah, good
01:43He's a walker as he does it and let me give you some privacy
01:46Oh, he's having a good sniff of everything. Good boy
01:49It'll be interesting to see what he's like when he meets the dogs
01:51Rollo is going to be meeting our rescue puppy king our shy rescue jockey our larger-than-life doberman mokey
01:59And our silly golden retriever kobe and we instantly noticed him marking his territory on everything and you'll see later
02:06on
02:07It only gets worse
02:08So you can see all of the dogs here trying to get a sneak peek
02:13At rollo there's a puppy in there probably destroying something rollo looks pretty chilled out
02:18So we're gonna go and place him behind the gate rollo is behind the gate
02:22Oh, he doesn't look very happy about that and we're gonna get our first dog
02:26I think start with king the puppy. Yeah. Yeah, nice and easy. Let me go get king right ready
02:33You instantly see the first of many mistakes straight away the gate isn't stable and rollo knocks it over instantly
02:40Well, then
02:42Now what do you put it back up before I put him down?
02:45Well, we've managed to get the gate back up. Let's see what he's gonna be like
02:53Oh, he's got his legs stuck
02:59What do you reckon that is? I don't know
03:04Rolo just did not stop barking
03:06Oh
03:09King's ignoring him though. Yeah. King's being really good
03:13King is only 12 weeks old. So this is a lot for him to take in
03:17Good boy
03:19Go on
03:20Good boy
03:21Rolo
03:22Rolo
03:24But he was still going over which is a good sign
03:29I think he's getting too excited
03:30And we completely messed up here. The unstable gate led to a situation we really weren't prepared
03:38We stopped filming to get control of the situation and this is what happened when we turned the camera back
03:44on
03:44Yeah, but obviously we want to make sure rollo doesn't actually go for it. Of course
03:47But he's this is good. Yeah. King's being very good. Good boy king
03:52He's got better manners. He has but they've got good temperament. Look at him
03:58I'm safe here. They started circling each other and for a moment we weren't sure if rollo was going to
04:04snap
04:04Good boy rollo. That's better. Good boy. He didn't thankfully, but this showed us
04:09We've still got a lot of work to do with rollo
04:11We need him to feel fully settled with king first before we even consider him meeting the rest of the
04:17pack
04:17Right. Well, that was not the best. Not the best not the worst
04:21It's gonna be interesting when he meets a bigger dog
04:23Because obviously I think there it looked like he knew king was younger and smaller
04:27So it looked like he just wanted to let him know his boss
04:29Maybe but this one's so unbothered
04:31I know because rollo's only 11 months
04:33He's probably trying to establish that he's the boss, but obviously he's only got bigger dogs to meet
04:38Yeah, and you're a brave boy
04:41We're just gonna let them be together for a little bit
04:44Let rollo calm down as well because he's probably got a bit of adrenaline
04:48So obviously we don't want him meeting the other dogs whilst he's a bit on high alert
04:54Oh, well done king king did so good
04:56He wants to go over there. Oh, he's cold
04:59They did begin sniffing each other both trying to work out what the other was about good boy rollo
05:05Good boy rollo. That's good. Well done. Yeah, that's better. Good boy. Rollo looks more relaxed as well. He does
05:13Kings having a good sniff. It looked like they were starting to figure things out
05:16But then rollo marks his territory again and king tries to size himself up against him. What?
05:27He's kind of you got to remember he's probably like um, he's probably scared. Yeah, he probably is. Yeah
05:34He's paying on everything. He's trying to mark his territory. King just wants to be friends with him
05:39King then tries to initiate play and rollo's reaction really surprised us good boy
05:49King you can't jump out
05:52We're gonna give him some time to decompress because there's still another three dogs to meet after king tested rollo
05:57one more time
05:58It actually looked like they were starting to figure things out
06:04Good boys well done. That was good
06:09Be interesting to see how the dynamic changes when the big dogs come out
06:13Yeah, rollo and king are chilling out a bit now. They're just kind of putting up with each other, which
06:17is good
06:18We are going to get rollo on the other side of the gate and we're going to bring out jockey
06:22next because she's super chilled out
06:24We figured that's probably a good dog for him to meet next. This is our other rescue jockey
06:28She's amazing with the other dogs and super timid maybe a bit too timid. So rollo can't go for her,
06:35right, right?
06:37Okay, we have got jockey good girl ella is holding the gate for rollo
06:43Hello darling
06:45Oh same thing again
06:48Good girl jockey. You instantly see jockey back away. Good girl well done
06:55My hackles are up
06:57I'm staying around jockey at the moment for a bit of support
07:01Good girl
07:02Good girl
07:03So we think he's probably a bit reactive behind the gate
07:06Some dogs get reactive on a leash or behind the gate because they feel trapped
07:10So at first we thought that might be the issue here, but as you'll see later, we're wrong again
07:16We've got ella at the gate this time to make sure it's secure
07:19We didn't want to make the same mistake again
07:21We plan on waiting for him to stop barking before we're thinking about letting them meet
07:25So I also think it is I think because of his age because he's at that teenager age
07:29He's just trying to be a bit of a bully
07:34He's trying to find weak spots
07:38So why did rollo need rescuing in the first place his story is actually really sad
07:43His owners sadly passed away and a family member took him in but the landlord wouldn't allow dogs
07:49So he had nowhere to go
07:50That's when we stepped in to help
07:52Rolo clearly isn't a dog's dog
07:55But we don't want to paint him in a bad light at all
07:57He's not a bad dog far from it actually
08:00And we're going to show you later just how sweet this boy really is
08:05Jockey's having a good sniff of everything because he's peed on everything
08:08He's stopped barking what should we do?
08:12I think wait for her to come out that corner
08:14Okay
08:15So the last thing we want to do is trap jockey into a corner in case rollo goes for her
08:20But to try and control the situation a bit better we thought of a plan
08:23So we have put a lead on him
08:25We're not going to hold the lead when he meets because that can a lot of the times go worse
08:29Because he could be reactive on the leads and you know lunging for her
08:32But if he does go for her at least we've got something to grab
08:35Jockey's out the corner what should we do?
08:36I'm going to let her open now
08:37Okay, we're going to let him in
08:48Go closer please to his lead
08:49I can step on it
08:59Rolo went for jockey and we have to take the blame here
09:02We were too focused on him being reactive on the lead when really we should have had full control
09:07We've never had a dog lunging before and it really showed that we're still learning
09:14We have decided we are going to keep on a lead because he keeps lunging for the dogs and that
09:19is not okay
09:20Jockey's being good good girl well done
09:22We're so sorry for her
09:24He's drooling so he's stressed
09:25Yeah
09:26But yeah
09:28We're going to keep him on lead to meet the other dogs
09:31We weren't going to make the same mistake again so this time we had rollo on a lead for his
09:36meeting with Moki
09:37I'll let her go because I think she'll be more standoffish now
09:42Ideally after a dog reacts like rollo did you give them a few days to decompress
09:47Adrenaline can stay in their system for a long time and forcing more introductions too soon can make things worse
09:53But with a house full of dogs, we didn't have that option
09:56We had to keep introducing him even though we knew this wasn't the ideal setup for him
10:03He's trying to get her isn't he?
10:05He's trying to lunge at her yeah
10:06We noticed rollo backing up and figured he might just be scared
10:10Reacting first because he thinks they'll go for him
10:13Because he's backing up
10:14And he's
10:16Yeah, he's
10:17He's scared
10:18Do you know what?
10:19I've got an idea
10:20So we came up with a plan take him and Moki on a walk together somewhere neutral
10:25And honestly, we should have done that from the start
10:28We're so used to rescuing dogs from abroad where you can't walk them for the first few days
10:32That we slipped into old habits and didn't think
10:36So now he's on neutral ground and has other distractions
10:39Will he still go for Moki?
10:41Yeah
10:41Alright, let it go
10:42Looking back, we should have kept Moki on the lead and walked them together first
10:46Letting her off wasn't the right move, especially if rollo already felt threatened
10:51Still lunge in front
10:51Yeah, he is
10:53Our heads were scrambled at this point
10:55We're only human and we got a lot wrong
11:00So we brought him into the house
11:01Separated the lounge and kept our golden retriever Kobe away too
11:06We already knew that meeting wouldn't end well
11:08Kobe out, go on
11:11We don't really, we're gonna put a blanket here so that he's got his own space
11:14Yeah, obviously we've got to keep him separate
11:17Oh, and he's peeing on the freshly washed beds
11:21Nice
11:21Thank you very much, rollo
11:23When we separated them, it seemed to help and we could finally sit down and figure out what to do
11:29But then he did this
11:30And this is why we're gonna put a blanket up
11:36We have been given a bunch of blankets and stuff from his previous owners
11:40We have separated him from the other dogs, good boy Kobe
11:45We're basically just not going to introduce him to the other dogs
11:48And just let him desensitize over the next few days
11:51He's obviously gonna be quite stressed after his move
11:53And so, yeah, this is not good, not great
11:59Off camera, he actually tried to jump the gate to get to the other dogs
12:03So we decided the best thing was to put him in a covered crate and let him decompress
12:08So he is in there, I know you can't see him, but he's in there to try and help him
12:12decompress
12:13Annoyingly, we can't give him like treats and stuff to help him decompress
12:16Because he's a french and he's got a sensitive stomach
12:19Again, off camera, he was crying and was not enjoying his time in the crate
12:23So we took him out and to be honest, just wanted to comfort him
12:28What's a shame with him is he is the sweetest boy with humans
12:33Hello boy
12:34He's the sweetest dog with people, obviously he just doesn't like dogs
12:38Why don't you like dogs? He's so affectionate
12:41But unfortunately he just doesn't get on with other dogs
12:44And obviously living with them is definitely not an option for him
12:47So we've put him here now in the hallway because he was jumping over that makeshift fence that we made
12:54So this is kind of like the only thing that can fully separate him
12:57He's so sweet
13:02He's so ugly
13:03He's ugly cute
13:05Aren't you?
13:06Are you a kitty?
13:07Yes
13:08Look at him
13:09He's the sweetest boy
13:10He's just not a dog's dog
13:12For us that's very hard because we have got four other dogs here
13:15And that's when it really hit us
13:17He's not a dog's dog
13:18And with a house full of them
13:20Plus a tiny puppy relying on us
13:22This environment wasn't right for him
13:25We told his owners what happened
13:26And thankfully they agreed to take him back
13:29But it doesn't change the fact that this was the first time we truly felt like we failed a dog
13:35I'm sorry
13:37We kind of failed you
13:39I'm sorry
13:51We made a lot of mistakes in this video
13:55And honestly I wasn't sure whether to post it
13:57But this is the reality of rescuing
14:00Sometimes things go wrong and you find yourself completely out of your depth
14:04We messed up and it hurt
14:06A lot
14:07But we're taking this lesson with us
14:09The only thing that made it easier was knowing Rolo didn't know this was his new home yet
14:13To him it was probably just the worst doggy daycare ever
14:17We've offered to help his owners find him a home where he can be the only dog
14:21Which is exactly what he deserves
14:23I'm sorry we let you down Rolo
14:24And I'm sorry if we let you guys down too
14:27We're learning
14:28And we promise to keep getting better for these dogs
14:32He's ugly cute
14:33Aren't you?
14:34Are you cutie?
14:35Yes
14:37Look at him
14:37He's the sweetest boy
