01 December - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Alex Deakin
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's a very wet start to December for some of us and of course it was a pretty wet November too.
00:07So because the ground is already incredibly soggy, the rain falling today is likely to cause some problems.
00:12We have a Met Office Amber warning in place across parts of Wales.
00:16Beautiful swirl on the satellite image, an area of low pressure, actually quite a way away from the UK.
00:22But it's where the fronts are draped down over us.
00:25In particular, this cold front has got what we call a bit of a wave on it.
00:29That does a couple of things. It intensifies the rain. It also makes it slower to clear through.
00:33So the rainfall really building up this afternoon, especially over South Wales.
00:38That brisk wind isn't helping either. That's increasing the rainfall, especially over the hills in South Wales.
00:44But also, southwest England very wet too. Parts of the southeast of England may stay dry.
00:49Parts of northwest Scotland not seeing much rain, even a bit of sunshine coming through here.
00:54But as I said, we are particularly concerned about the rainfall.
00:57There are yellow warnings in place covering western parts of England, most of Wales and southwest Scotland.
01:03But that amber warning in the southwest of Wales, we could see 100, 120 millimetres of rain over the hills,
01:09quite widely, even at lower levels, 20 to 40 millimetres of rainfall.
01:13That is likely to cause some flooding, potential for power issues and certainly some significant disruption.
01:19It is quite mild because the winds are coming up from the south.
01:21It doesn't feel all that clever because of the strength of the wind and the heavy rain too.
01:26It could easily squeak into the teams in one or two places.
01:29It's a little colder across Scotland and Northern Ireland, seven to nine degrees here.
01:33But as I mentioned, the northwest of Scotland should see some sunny spells.
01:37Then this zone of rain does tend to work away through this evening.
01:40It could bring a spell of heavy rain, short burst of intense rain as it clears from west to east.
01:46Then we're left with a few showers coming into Wales and western parts of Scotland.
01:50But many areas, as you can see, become dry through the nights with lengthy clear spells.
01:55That will allow the temperatures to dip away somewhat.
01:58The winds will ease a bit as well, helping the temperatures down to five or six degrees in towns
02:02and cities a little lower in some rural spots.
02:05A brighter day for many on Tuesday.
02:07A better chance of seeing some sunshine.
02:09But we're not completely dry, far from it.
02:11There will again be showers coming into the highlands, the western Isles of Scotland,
02:14around the coast of Wales initially, and the south coast of England.
02:18Quite a few heavy showers.
02:19As we go through the day, likely to see some of those showers moving inland
02:22across parts of southern England and south Wales.
02:25Heavy ones possible, maybe even the odd crack of thunder.
02:28But for many places, across the Midlands, northern England, it's a much brighter day.
02:33Eastern Scotland too, seeing some good spells of sunshine.
02:35Probably not many showers at all getting to Northern Ireland.
02:38Quite a gusty wind still, particularly close to the showers.
02:42But the winds generally are fairly much lighter compared to today's values.
02:47And despite the sunshine, temperatures will be quite a bit lower tomorrow as well.
02:50Certainly for England and Wales, you'll notice that fresher feel.
02:54But because the winds will be lighter, get a bit of sunshine.
02:56Might not feel too bad.
02:57Obviously not very pleasant when those heavy showers are moving through.
03:01And they'll continue to move through during the course of Tuesday evening,
03:04perhaps spreading a little further north into the Midlands, northern England.
03:07Still some showers coming into western Scotland.
03:10You can see the swirl there as the low pressure system gets a little bit closer.
03:13The wind will start to pick up here at least once more.
03:16We're going to see a pretty changeable week.
03:18For more details on that, you can watch our full week ahead video.
03:22That'll be available Monday afternoon with Annie.
