01:20A reading from the first book of the Kings.
01:25Naboth, Naboth of Jezreel, had a vineyard close to the place of Ahab, king of Samaria.
01:31And Ahab said to Naboth, give me your vineyard to be my vegetable garden, since it adjoins my house, and
01:39I will give you a better vineyard for it.
01:42If you prefer, I will give you its worth in money.
01:45But Naboth answered, Ahab, do not forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors.
01:53Ahab went home gloomy and out of temper at the words of Naboth of Jezreel, and I will not give
02:01you the inheritance of my fathers.
02:03He lay down on his bed and turned his face away and refused to eat.
02:09Then his wife, Jezreel, came to him, why are you so dispirited, she said, that you will not eat.
02:17He said, I have been speaking to Naboth of Jezreel, and I said, give me your vineyard, either for money
02:25or if you prefer for another vineyard in exchange.
02:29But he said, I will not give you my vineyard.
02:33Then his wife, Jezreel, said, you make a fine king of Israel, and no mistake, get up and eat, cheer

03:10You have cursed God and the king, then take him outside and stone him to death.

05:56The Gospel reading goes against the grain of our instincts.
06:00But we are called to move beyond our instincts.
06:03We are called to live the way of love.
06:09When a person made up for another person in the time of Jesus,
06:13They made a kiss on the cheek.
06:15So Jesus is saying,
06:17When they refuse your overtones of peace,
06:20Do not stop trying.
06:22Give them the other cheek.
06:23Keep trying to make peace.
06:26It's more than just not having revenge.
06:29It's further than that.
06:30It's bigger than that.
06:32It's about the way of love.
06:34One wants a piece of clothing.
06:37Give them more.
06:38One wants you to do something for them.

06:41It's the generosity of God,
06:43Which in one sense goes against our instincts
06:46And against the grain.
06:48But it's liberating us.
06:49It's helping us to grow and mature
06:51Into the person God has created us
06:55To truly be.
06:57We are called to love
06:58As our Heavenly Father loves.
07:00Is that easy?
07:01Of course not.
07:02But it means we keep trying.
07:04That's our aim.
07:05But when we actually try to do that,
07:08We experience something of the promise of Jesus.

07:13At least the world cannot be.
07:22Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation.
07:24For to your goodness we have this bread to offer.
07:27Which earth has given human hands have made.
07:29It will become for us the bread of life.
