00:00All right, enough of that other football that apparently has captivated the world.
00:04We're talking American football.
00:07The real football.
00:08With Coach Riz.
00:09And I can tell you, I can tell by him being out of camp the way he is,
00:14he would never give up valuable football field time to the soccer players in the fall.
00:19What's up, Coach Riz? How are you?
00:21Hey, guys. What's going on? Happy Friday to you.
00:23That never was a problem, right?
00:25You always were very amicable.
00:27Okay, you guys can get the field, too. No problem.
00:30The Browns shared the practice fields in Berea with Brazil and Egypt.
00:33Is that right?
00:33They had them painted out. They had the soccer goals out there and everything.
00:37Oh, yeah. I didn't know that.
00:38Part of the peace accord.
00:40Well, I think it's important. You've got to make peace with everybody.
00:44That just makes your life a lot easier because there will be moments when you need the field.
00:47So that was always kind of my thought process behind it.
00:50Just remember, in soccer, it's under the bar, not over the bar.
00:53All right, Coach Riz, appreciate you coming on because you have been monitoring.
00:57You've been giving me basically every day full scouting reports.
01:02And I wanted to have you on.
01:04I thought it was the perfect time because we finished OTAs.
01:08We finished mini camps.
01:10And now it's all, what, five, six weeks until we start getting serious and have training camp.
01:15And it was the coach himself who had told us he was hoping to have the quarterback stuff ironed out
01:20by now.
01:22And clearly that isn't happening.
01:23What do you think that means?
01:25Well, you know, I actually think it's a good thing.
01:27And, you know, the narrative that they've played great or the narrative that they've played terrible, I just don't agree
01:33with.
01:33I think there's been some real improvement with things that are kind of not what you see on, you know,
01:38even the clips I send out with footwork and processing and getting to the second, third progressions and getting the
01:46poise and calling these plays.
01:48And you can see they have a lot of, there's a lot on their plate with changing protections and getting
01:53into good plays.
01:54And that's kind of the idea of not being in a system offense.
01:57So, for me, I like it.
01:58And as I said yesterday with Daryl, I don't think it's a matter of these guys, you know, a lot
02:03of times when you play a quarterback, when people say you have two, you have none, I don't really believe
02:07in that unless those two are really playing poorly.
02:10And I don't think these two are.
02:12I think there's been some inaccuracy, what everybody sees, but what they've done at a high level, and I truly
02:18believe that.
02:19You've got a guy coming off multiple injuries, and you've got a guy coming off seven starts who was a
02:23fifth-round pick.
02:24I think they've done an excellent job.
02:26And obviously, there's been some accuracy issues.
02:28And that comes down to reps, right?
02:30If you run a curl, Boston's going to run it different than Casey Concepcion.
02:34And you would hope that, you know, that gets ironed out with more reps.
02:39Obviously, none of it means anything until you get the pads on.
02:42It doesn't mean anything until you use live bullets.
02:45But I've been very impressed with these guys.
02:47And, you know, I look at it differently, and I respect what everybody else thinks, because that's why quarterback positions
02:52are so hard to evaluate.
02:53We all get them wrong.
02:54But from what I saw last year in camp and et cetera over the last three, four years, I'm very
03:00happy with what I saw on those guys through the entire summer, especially the last three days.
03:05Todd Munkin has been pretty open and honest about his thoughts and his evaluation.
03:13So when he speaks in terms of, yeah, both of these guys have, just like you said, coach, have been
03:19good enough to deserve the opportunity to compete in training camp, is that coach speak?
03:25Do you think he really believes that?
03:27And do you think, though, he has a plan in his mind who he thinks is going to win this
03:33competition and start week one in Jacksonville?
03:36I really don't think he does.
03:37And as an old school guy, I think he would like to have this worked out.
03:41And I think when he said he'd like to have this done by the end of this mandatory minicamp, I
03:45think he meant that.
03:45Because then you're getting into the 80-20 where, you know, everybody works a little bit differently.
03:49But usually the starter's getting about 80%.
03:51The backup's getting about 20%.
03:53And, you know, the more reps you get, the better you are at it.
03:56But the idea of one of these guys being in front of the other, we don't know exactly what's going
04:03on behind, you know, closed doors, when they're watching film, when they're installing.
04:07You know, the thing that I've been most impressed with, more than the throws, because the throws don't mean anything
04:12to me, per se, until they get the pads on.
04:15Because then you've got a live pass rush, et cetera.
04:17But their ability to get their offense into different plays.
04:21You see them canning plays, you see them killing plays, which means they're kind of getting into new plays.
04:26And Todd Munkin talked about yesterday, allowing the quarterbacks to get into a great play.
04:30But then you've got to take ownership of it.
04:32And I'm seeing both of these guys do that.
04:34Now, once again, that's easy to do in the film room.
04:37That's easy to do through walkthroughs.
04:39That's even easy to do when you're out there 11-on-11 where everyone else is live and you're not.
04:45Obviously, it's a product-based league, and it's a product-based sport.
04:49You've got to win games.
04:50But the progression they've taken, you know, for me, Munkin builds to the 11-on-11s.
04:55Munkin's building to game one.
04:56I think this is an open competition.
04:58I think it's very close.
05:00And I think both guys have done some really good things.
05:02But I do think it comes down to when they get to joint practice versus the Bills.
05:06When they get to these preseason games.
05:09I think these things mean something this year because it is a close competition.
05:13And it is a real competition.
05:14I truly believe that.
05:16Coach Riz, join us right now on the We Make It Right Call, Kyle Wright Hotline.
05:20So if you had never seen Deshaun Watson have the success he had previously back in the Texans days, and
05:30you didn't see the seven games last year that Shador Sanders had, you just saw what you've seen so far.
05:38I know it sounds ridiculous.
05:39But who would be the starting quarterback going into week one?
05:43Well, you know, it's funny because that's how Todd Munkin's looking at it.
05:45And all the things that happened in the past don't mean anything.
05:48And if you're asking me who should start right now, I would say Deshaun Watson.
05:51And it's not.
05:52It's about who gives me the best chance to win right now.
05:55So if you're asking me right now, Deshaun Watson.
05:58But I will say this.
06:00You know, everybody's talked about we know what Deshaun Watson's going to do in practice.
06:03He can't do it in games.
06:04And I've heard that narrative a bunch.
06:05And we've heard that, you know, Shador is a gamer but can't do it in practice.
06:09Well, I've seen Shador all summer.
06:12And I think he's a much better practice player than he was before.
06:15And he's closed that gap.
06:17And I think there was a gap.
06:18If he's healthy, Deshaun Watson is elite.
06:21And once again, we're not talking about what he's done in the past.
06:23We're talking about what we've seen.
06:25I've seen he's got elite arm talent.
06:27He can move.
06:28He doesn't look like he's been injured, et cetera.
06:30But Shador has closed that gap.
06:32So if Deshaun gets in a game and he's unable to perform but is out practicing Shador in practice,
06:39Shador has closed that gap where he's going to get a look.
06:41And, you know, obviously if you need a spark, I'm never a believer of putting a guy in to get
06:46a look at him,
06:47to develop him, to see what we got.
06:49I don't believe in that.
06:50You earn your right to play.
06:52And even though I think Watson is ahead in my book, I think Shador has closed that gap where he's
06:57also earned the right to get a look if Watson wasn't to play at a high level.
07:01These guys are doing a lot of really good things.
07:03The thing that they've got to finish is they've got to protect the ball.
07:06They've made some poor mistakes during camp.
07:08And they've got to continue to work on their accuracy, which for me has a lot to do with, like
07:13I said, just reps with these new guys.
07:15But if you're asking me right now, Anthony, I'm taking Watson.
07:20And I think Shador is right there with him.
07:22Well, the one thing that we can't blame in this quarterback competition is the supporting cast.
07:28It's clearly upgraded.
07:29You and I talked about yesterday, Coach, the young receivers.
07:34I think they're the big winners of this offseason, as well as the minicamp, Casey Concepcion, Boston, and Isaiah Bond.
07:44All three of those guys every day, it seems like, during practice, they all make plays.
07:51And they all make plays consistently.
07:56What's your view of these young receivers and their ability to help elevate, whether it's Deshaun or Shador?
08:05Well, I'll tell you what.
08:06When coming into camp, I'm a big space guy.
08:10So I like receivers like Casey Concepcion and Isaiah Bond, those guys who can generate offense when not everybody else
08:16does it right.
08:16Because when you throw vertically to a Boston, you've got to have good pass protection.
08:20You've got to have a great throw.
08:21Those speed guys, those pace guys, those in-space pace guys, they don't need a lot else to make plays
08:27for you.
08:28But I have been incredibly impressed with Denzel Boston.
08:33His catch radius, not only on the vertical balls, where everybody talks about going downfield,
08:37and you see those plays where he goes up and gets it.
08:39I'm talking on slants and curls and digs.
08:42That big body coming across the middle, he presents.
08:45That's the term quarterback friendly.
08:47That would be an idea of it.
08:49He presents such a great target, and he has such a large catch radius.
08:53He catches everything.
08:54He's kind of an old soul in football.
08:56He just comes to work every day.
08:57You don't hear him out there.
08:59He just gets his job done.
09:01Now, for me, what it does, I think that everybody talks about they don't have a number one receiver.
09:05I think Boston has a chance to elevate to that.
09:08But they have three or four guys now, including Isaiah Bond, that I think now give their true number one
09:14on offense,
09:15which is Harold Fannin.
09:16It's going to force these defenses to be balanced, and you're going to be able to see if they go
09:20nickel because they need to cover.
09:22Now you can run the ball a little bit better.
09:23If they go regular personnel with three linebackers, who's covering Fannin?
09:26You have to be balanced in the secondary because maybe you don't have a true number one yet,
09:31but these guys have been all really talented in what they've done so far through the summer.
09:36And you haven't fixed the offensive line, but you've addressed it, and their movement skills,
09:41there's been an influx of talent with that offensive line.
09:43So I think things trend upward, and I think it gives these quarterbacks a chance to be successful,
09:48and it gives Jerry Judy a chance to be successful, and it gives these guys who haven't had much on
09:52offense.
09:53There is an influx.
09:54Now, it doesn't mean you're going to win.
09:55It doesn't mean they're going to be successful right away, but you can see the influx of talent,
10:00and I think it gives these quarterbacks an opportunity to make plays,
10:03and then you'll see who the best guy is, and I think that's important because winning still has to be
10:07the priority,
10:08not development.
10:09Development happens now.
10:10When you get to the season, you've got to win.
10:12It's a product-based league, and you've got to win games.
10:15Coach Riz, you have seen the attempt at the install so far.
10:20What can you tell us about what the Todd Munkin identity of this offense is going to be?
10:26Because remember, we've seen very different Todd Munkin offenses over the years.
10:31That was part of the sell job is what a chameleon he's been able to be over time.
10:36What's it going to look like here, and how different will it look from what we saw previously with Kevin
10:40Stefanski?
10:41It's going to be a lot different.
10:42So the idea of I always like to talk about players over plays and a system-based offense that Kevin
10:47ran,
10:48and I don't think it's wrong, and I said that to everybody.
10:50I don't think Kevin's a bad coach.
10:51He's a system-based coach, and when you're a system-based coach, all your pieces have to be really, really
10:57good.
10:57You have to be really good up front.
10:59You have to have a great run game, that wide zone, et cetera, et cetera.
11:02That's a system-based.
11:03So you have to fit into Kevin's, you know, a system-based coach's offense.
11:08Not with Todd Munkin, so you just said it right, Anthony.
11:11When you get all these different things from Stenson Beddon at Georgia to, you know, Lamar Jackson,
11:17he's going to take what you do best and fit it into what he does, and it's not the opposite
11:21way, right?
11:22So he's going to make sure he maximizes your skill set.
11:25He's going to make sure he's a touch guy.
11:27So it's not about running particular routes.
11:30It's how do I get this guy open?
11:32How do I get this guy touches?
11:34How do I maximize Casey Concepcion on what he does best?
11:37Everybody talks about him catching the ball.
11:39He's had a great three weeks, you know, in my opinion, catching the ball.
11:42But Casey Concepcion is here to run after the catch.
11:44So how do I maximize that?
11:46Denzel Boston is here to possibly be a number one.
11:49How do I maximize that?
11:50Use his length.
11:51You've seen that.
11:52So you're going to see guys get touches in space where they can be successful.
11:57He's going to find matchups.
11:58So if you go back to what the defense has been over the last couple years,
12:01where they're trying to find matchups for, you know, defensive ends and linebackers,
12:04you're going to get the same thing with this offense.
12:07How do I maximize what my guys do best?
12:10Not really a scheme.
12:12That's what you get when you're old, right?
12:13Like us, right?
12:14You get the idea of you've run a million different things.
12:16You know how to run these things.
12:18But how do they make your offense and how do they make your players maximize their skill set?
12:22And that's what you get in a player's offense.
12:24So you're going to see week to week, you know, whoever they play,
12:27you're going to see different run schemes.
12:29You're going to see different pass schemes.
12:30But it all comes back to keeping it simple and just maximizing your guys
12:34and getting the ball where they can be really good with it when they get it.
12:37Miles Garrett would be accused of wrecking practice on a regular basis when he was here.
12:42How problematic has Jared Verst been on the practice field
12:46as he's adjusting going from a 3-4 scheme in L.A.
12:49coming to Cleveland where he's in a 4-3?
12:51Well, I think Jared Verst, this is a perfect, not only is it a 4-3, Daryl,
12:55but this is an attacking 4-3.
12:57So he doesn't have to play on the line of scrimmage very much.
13:00When you think about two-gapping or playing the line of scrimmage
13:02or consistently getting your hands on an offensive tackle or a tight end,
13:05he doesn't have to do that.
13:07So he's going to be in a wide five on that weak side, mostly against the tight end.
13:11This defense absolutely fits him much better than a 3-4.
13:15In a 3-4, when you're that outside linebacker, you have pass responsibility.
13:19There's a lot more stunts.
13:22That's kind of the beauty of these style defenses that Schwartz runs
13:25and now into Rutenberg.
13:27This is based on keeping it simple, stupid, right?
13:29The idea of having your guys play fast because they know exactly what they're doing.
13:34And you can only do that when you have really good players.
13:37Jared Verst is a very, very good player.
13:39He's very physical at the point of attack.
13:41He likes to play the run.
13:42You and I were talking yesterday.
13:44Poor Spencer Fano goes for Miles Garrett.
13:46Now he goes to this next guy who's, it's not Miles Garrett.
13:50There is no Miles Garrett, but this is a really good football player.
13:53And he, along with the rest of those guys up front and this linebacking crew in the secondary,
13:58even though thin, they can stay healthy.
14:00This is a really, really good defense.
14:02And being in a 4-3, I think you get more out of Jared Verst than you do in a
14:073-4.
14:08It just allows him to put his hand on the ground and go get the quarterback.
14:11Read that tackle, stop the run, and go get the quarterback.
14:15And that's kind of the goal, right?
14:16Win on first down, reward yourself by getting second, third, and long, and then go rush the passer.
14:21That's kind of what these pressure fronts are doing.
14:23And I think he's a perfect fit for what the Browns want to do defensively.
14:28What a breakdown.
14:28That's why we have him on all the time.
14:30And that's also why he is becoming, if not already, one of the top football analysts in the area.
14:38Coach Riz, thanks for joining us.
14:40Absolutely, guys.
14:41Have a good weekend.
14:42Thanks for having me.
14:42All right.
14:43There he is on the Weishart, right?
14:44We make it right.
14:45Call Kyle Wright hotline.
14:46You heard what he said.
14:47He thinks both quarterbacks are faring well.
14:51He loves the install right now from Todd Munkin.
14:53And he says he'd start Deshaun Watson based on what he's seen so far.
14:59He says he'd start Deshaun Watson based on what he's seen so far.
