00:00We got a Browns quarterback competition, if we want to call it that.
00:03Shador doesn't want to call it that.
00:04More on him saying that coming up here in a little bit.
00:07We have a competition going on, and it might be a race to the bottom.
00:10We'll ask Mary Kay about this coming up at 8.22 this morning.
00:13Darryl Ryder, not very impressed, to say the least.
00:17Here is the Dangerous Ones' first thoughts yesterday.
00:22His internal conversation, excuse me, on Deshaun's internal conversations with the Browns.
00:28This is Darryl's first thoughts on that.
00:30They invested $230 million in him, so not all that surprised.
00:35I hope he plays better than does press conferences, though, because today was not one of those days.
00:41His press conference was better than his day on the practice field.
00:44But not a surprise.
00:44They got him on the practice field last year for the four-week stretch for putting him on the shelf
00:50for the rest of the season there.
00:52From his standpoint, all you can ask for at this point is an opportunity, and the Browns are giving him
00:56that.
00:57It's kind of on him what he does with the opportunity from there.
01:01A little surly from Darryl there.
01:03Told you that hair was bopping yesterday, man.
01:06I don't know if it was the heat, the humidity, or what, but Darryl, not so impressed with what he
01:13saw yesterday.
01:14No, he wasn't.
01:14And really, it seemed to be worse from Watson, but he basically said neither.
01:19Very inspiring.
01:20Well, here is Darryl a little bit further about the minicamp performance, specifically about Deshaun Watson.
01:26What did you see from Deshaun Watson today on the field, and include yesterday as well?
01:30Oof.
01:32I mean, if he's the lead dog in this race, I don't know if that says more about how far
01:39behind Shadour is, or just what an interesting season we'll be in for, I think is how I will put
01:45it.
01:45I mean, look, he'll throw a beautiful ball on one throw, and then the next throw, miss a receiver by
01:50five yards.
01:51Like, it's just the way she goes.
01:54I honestly don't know what to make of it.
01:56It's not a surprise Todd Munkin's not naming a starting quarterback after this minicamp.
02:01This thing's going to go into training camp, and I have no idea when he's going to be able to
02:06name a starter.
02:07If they're both going to be bad, I am fine with him not naming a starter.
02:12I know he wanted to name a starter.
02:14I know he wanted to have a starter by the time training camp started along.
02:18If they're both not going to be great for him, then I got no problem waiting into training camp.
02:23It concerns me.
02:25It would concern me if this team had real expectations.
02:31Well, that's the thing.
02:32A team that has a competition doesn't really have real expectations.
02:35Why would it concern you that much, and what was your honest expectation going into the year?
02:40Just because it always – I think the history as a Browns fan is playing into it,
02:44where these things just always end up off the rails.
02:48Like, the whole thing about – I remember when we drafted Taylon Green,
02:51and you and I had conversations, and we had a bitter argument about Taylon Green,
02:56and there were a bunch of people going, why are you guys arguing about Taylon Green?
02:59I'm going, you guys really don't think he's going to play at all this year?
03:01You don't think he's going to start a game this year?
03:04Considering you guys have all been Browns fans as long as we've been Browns fans.
03:07He's not going to play?
03:08And that plays into it because you know the season probably isn't going to go to where we want it
03:14to go.
03:14It might go exactly where some people want it to go,
03:17depending on what they think about the college quarterbacks in this year's class.
03:19But it's not going to go where we want it to go, more than likely.
03:23And my whole goal of it is I want to see Todd Munkin be as consistent as possible
03:29and be as innovative and open-minded as possible to make me feel better about the direction of the team.
03:35Because I don't want to get to the end of a season that could end up being a slog here
03:38if we're looking at both quarterbacks and not very excited about either one at minicamp.
03:43I don't want to get to the end of it and all of a sudden it's on Todd Munkin now.
03:46I don't want to do that.
03:47I don't want to be looking for new coaches like it startled me when they traded Myles Garrett last week
03:52and there were plenty of people wanting to go, well, Todd Munkin's David Cully now.
03:56He's one and done.
03:57I go, no, please no.
03:59I mean, if it happens, it happens.
04:01I've seen crazier things in the NFL and I've seen crazier things from the Browns.
04:04But that really is my goal.
04:05I want to maintain some semblance of consistency and some standard here with this team
04:12because you do have good young other players and that means that if you were going to do something crazy,
04:16we're talking about crazy different messages in a short amount of time.
04:20That tends to confuse people.
04:21I don't want that to happen.
04:22Well, I guess I never understood.
04:24Yeah, in a dream world, it would be nice to have your starting QB carved out.
04:29But if you go around the league and say, who's got their starting quarterback carved out already?
04:35We know the depth chart.
04:36We know the pecking order around the NFL.
04:39Like, it's all the teams that, you know, don't have a quarterback competition.
04:43But the ones that would have a quarterback competition at this point, like, yeah,
04:47why would we think we could decide who the better quarterback is before they even put their pads on,
04:52before they even really face a pass rush?
04:55I mean, that's the one thing I notice in all these videos of any of the deep balls getting hit.
05:00Of course, you know, you're not seeing highlights of all the incompletions,
05:03of which there seem to be a lot of, too, or just bad throws in general.
05:06I know what the trackers state.
05:09But, you know, a lot of this is...
05:10By the way, credit to Daniel Yafusi.
05:13Credit, credit, credit.
05:15I saw the social media posts on X brought to you by...
05:19Shive and Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
05:21He dissolved himself of any responsibility for the quarterback trackers.
05:25Like, I have nothing to do with that.
05:27Yeah, I'm just...
05:28Credit to Daniel Yafusi.
05:29I'm just saying, like, this is supposed to be the easiest of easy right now.
05:33I mean, I know you have...
05:34You're familiarizing yourself with the language.
05:39And, you know, you're figuring out the cadence.
05:42Trying to figure out even who the center is.
05:43So, you know, you've got to take snaps and all that.
05:45And trying to know who the wide receivers are.
05:47But as far as, like, the throws, it's only going to get tougher.
05:50And if these guys are having trouble now, like, it does stand to reason that this is going to be
05:57a bit of a mess as we get into training camp.
05:59So, why not just wait?
06:00Why not just wait and see, you know, whether or not the cream rises to the top or somebody wins
06:06by default.
06:06Either way, like, I never understood the rush to get this settled now anyway.
06:10What do you think he would say to either one of these guys after today?
06:12Because after today, they go home.
06:14They go home for the next five, six weeks.
06:16They come back.
06:17I'm sure Shador will be in town.
06:20I don't know what Deshaun Watson will do.
06:21That's not a shot.
06:22I'm serious.
06:23It seems that Shador just stays around here and hangs out.
06:27And Deshaun seems to be everywhere but here.
06:28Yeah.
06:30I don't know if there's an F1 race coming up somewhere around the world that he can go see.
06:33I haven't been able to keep up since they switched to Apple TV.
06:36I will say this for Watson.
06:37And I know what his QB guru, his personal coach, Quincy Avery.
06:43Is that his name?
06:43I mean, like, if we're seeing the mechanics be this bad, maybe Deshaun needs to stay here
06:50and work with somebody else.
06:52Well, possibly, yes.
06:52Because if those mechanics are still this bad, what I am being told by the people that are
06:56there every day and covering him is his athleticism is back.
06:59And I'm like, whoa, okay, whoa.
07:01I did not expect that.
07:03You know, you heard him talk yesterday about not being 100%.
07:06But if that athleticism is back and we just have to work on mechanics, then we better
07:11be going over that stuff like crazy because then you could maybe salvage something here.
07:15Well, I told you a lot of that athleticism seemed to already be back at the end of the
07:18year last year.
07:19And I know they kept him out for precautionary reasons, whatever.
07:22But I told you what I saw.
07:24And what I saw was a hell of an athlete.
07:25But when it comes to mechanics, some of that stuff is explainable.
07:28Now, this isn't an excuse.
07:29You know who I want to start the season with.
07:31But I want him to do it the right way.
07:32And I will get into that coming up at 7.01 after we talk to Joel Batonio coming up at
07:366.40.
07:36But when it comes to Deshaun, some of that is explainable.
07:40Timing is something different.
07:41Now, you could work out with Jerry, Judy, and do some of those things during the offseason
07:44like we've seen some of it.
07:46But you've got other wide receivers you're throwing to as well.
07:48And you've got two rookies that you're throwing to as well in Denzel Boston and Casey Conception.
07:52So your steps are going to be different.
07:53Your timing is going to be different.
07:54The offensive line is different.
07:55There's so many things that are different.
07:56What both of these guys have to do is take what they've seen here over this course of time
08:02over minicamp, over OTAs, and apply it to their workouts over the next five to six weeks
08:08so they can hit the ground running.
08:09Because this is still going to be an open competition for these guys.
