00:00Nick, how are we feeling this morning? First early rise of the season.
00:04It is. We are up early. There is Browns football on the television today,
00:08and it feels a little weird coming off of last night, does it not?
00:13Because you're feeling good most of last night.
00:17I venture to say 80 or 90% of last night.
00:20You're feeling pretty good watching the Buckeyes.
00:23Arch Manning kind of kept in check a little bit there.
00:26You're thinking to yourself, okay, there's going to be no talk in the morning about tanking.
00:31There's going to be no talk in the morning about Arch Manning.
00:34It's going to be celebrating an Ohio State win and getting ready for Browns football.
00:38And then the fourth quarter happened.
00:41So excited to have Browns football today.
00:43Excited to talk about it all with you, Jake.
00:46This season, we'll have a bunch of early wake-ups together, which I'm looking forward to.
00:52But, really, I feel like this college football Saturday angle that we're leading the show with
01:00probably ain't going anywhere just because all eyes have been on the quarterback
01:04for the first two weeks of the college football season for us here in Cleveland,
01:09and that's going to be a trend that continues throughout this entire Browns.
01:13It most certainly is going to be.
01:14I mean, listen, we may not open every single show every single week.
01:17I mean, I wanted to start the show with Browns.
01:19Have the Buckeyes just taken care of business in the fourth quarter?
01:22I don't know.
01:22I could have avoided it for the whole day.
01:24I mean, it's Ohio State-Texas.
01:25It's definitely big news, especially if they would have put the beat down.
01:28It looked like they were going to.
01:30Yeah.
01:31Now we're just in an odd spot of...
01:33I was expecting good vibes today.
01:35Like, I'm sitting here right now.
01:37I still don't feel like I'm getting ready for a Browns Sunday.
01:39It hasn't clicked yet in my brain.
01:41Wait for us to get to, like, I don't know, 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock.
01:44Wait for some NFL programming to be on your television,
01:47and our television's in the studio.
01:49Maybe I'll start to get a little bit more fired up.
01:52But I was expecting good vibes coming today.
01:54I expected the Buckeyes to take care of business.
01:56I'm sitting there heading into the fourth quarter like this is fantastic.
01:59I'm going to have a smile on my face walking to the studio.
02:02And then as I watch the fourth quarter...
02:04Nick, I'm not kidding you.
02:04I watched it happen, was trying to wrap my brain around it,
02:07and I was at my buddy's.
02:08I am driving home.
02:09And I got halfway home, and I just went,
02:12I have to talk about this in the morning.
02:13Like, all I wanted was to come in with a smile,
02:16and now I'm going to be angry when I walk in,
02:18because I'm still going to be coming down off this loss.
02:21Which, we'll get into the quarterback side of things,
02:24because social media was an adventure last night.
02:29But from the Ohio State side of things,
02:31I mean, was that not the patented Ryan Day,
02:35this is how you lose a game that you had no business losing?
02:38You know, the thing with all the Ryan Day naysayers
02:41is it's very easy to just point to the record and say,
02:45hey, overall, this is a great college football coach.
02:47The one thing that those individuals have on all of us,
02:51the Ryan Day crazy people,
02:53the one card that they have on all of us
02:55is that all of his losses look identically the same.
02:58They look identically the same.
03:00They all happen against big teams.
03:03They all happen in the most absolutely puzzling fashion imaginable.
03:09Dude, what is the Ohio State offense?
03:11Can I ask that?
03:12What is Arthur Smith bringing to the table
03:17if it's not for Jeremiah Smith?
03:18Like, when Jeremiah Smith is in the NFL next year,
03:21how are the Buckeyes scoring touchdowns?
03:23It's a great question.
03:24Maybe it's Chris Henry and, you know,
03:26maybe he turns into the new, you know, alien receiver in Columbus,
03:29but they don't really do much of anything well offensively
03:33when they're tested with good teams.
03:36And that's, you know, sandwiched in there is Ball State,
03:39but you also somewhat recently remember
03:42what they put on tape against Indiana,
03:43what they put on tape against Miami last season,
03:46and then to have Ryan Day crumble like this against Texas
03:50in a big national TV spot where everybody was tuned in
03:53to see Arch Manning in his second game against the Buckeyes in this defense.
03:58What a meltdown for the Buckeyes in Columbus.
04:01I mean, in Austin yesterday.
04:03It is just so unbelievably predictable and unpredictable at the same time.
04:08It's like the offense, and yes, there was a lot of Jeremiah Smith,
04:12but I think I speak for everybody.
04:14I'm all right if it's Jeremiah Smith.
04:15Like, if you got the guy there,
04:17I'd like him to go out and win at least a Blitnikoff,
04:19if not a Heisman.
04:20It would be nice.
04:21So I'm watching him go for, you know,
04:23eight catches and 160-some yards,
04:24and I'm like, yeah,
04:25this is what Jeremiah Smith is supposed to look like.
04:28And the offense was functioning.
04:30Like, you were going to Jeremiah a lot.
04:31The run game was, like, okay in the first half.
04:33It wasn't great.
04:34And I don't expect the run game to be fantastic at any point,
04:36really, this year based on what we've seen.
04:38But I'm watching it, and I'm like, okay,
04:40this is exactly what you need.
04:41The defense is getting well-rested.
04:42You're putting together long drives.
04:44Jeremiah Smith's coming up on big plays for you.
04:46And then it's Ryan Day in the second half.
04:49It's Ryan Day and Arthur Smith,
04:50just the tandem of, you know what we're going to do?
04:52We're going to basically try to bleed the clock
04:54for an entire half of football
04:56and play this so conservative just to hang on to the win.
04:59And I literally tweet out right after it happened,
05:01Has Ryan Day not learned a lesson
05:03from being a college football coach at Ohio State?
05:05The same thing every time.
05:06You play to win the game.
05:08But Ryan Day, time and again,
05:11in these big games for the Buckeyes,
05:13he plays to not lose,
05:15where he tries to just kill clock, run the ball.
05:18And on the other side,
05:20it was actually Texas doing that to you.
05:22Like, Arch Manning had some great throws
05:24in that fourth quarter.
05:25But Hollywood Smothers was getting first downs,
05:29it felt like, on every single carry.
05:31So it's like, hey, they're running the ball
05:33and they're the team trying to come back
05:35and they're moving the sticks.
05:37Like, the Buckeyes are just going three and out
05:40every time they touch the football.
05:41It's like, hey, you didn't get to use the putter
05:44against Ball State.
05:44Let's try to move the sticks a couple times here.
05:47You're up 20-3 in that fourth quarter, Jake.
05:50Like, that was the score when the fourth quarter started.
05:52You have to win those games.
05:54And it's, you know, leading earlier in the game,
05:58bringing out your punter when it's, what,
06:00fourth and four from the Texas 39
06:02or something like that?
06:03A little weird, wasn't it?
06:04A little odd.
06:05That's not, and I get field position
06:06and play in the game,
06:07but, like, that feels like a
06:08go-for-the-throat type of moment.
06:10And then even on the last one, like,
06:12how many times have I had to put my faith in a kicker
06:14and just knowing that it's going to end up wide left?
06:16Every single time.
06:17It's wide left every time.
06:18And the kid completely smoked.
06:19And you mentioned, you know,
06:21we're talking about Ryan Day
06:22and that all of these losses look similar.
06:24How many times is he going to put a big,
06:28you know, a kicker in a big moment like that?
06:31Because every time that he does it,
06:33it epically fails.
06:35Like, the situation, and I get it.
06:37You put through the field goal,
06:38then obviously it's a two-score game.
06:39You probably walk away from Austin with a win.
06:42But at the same time, you miss the field goal.
06:46It's a six-point game.
06:47You go for it and don't get it.
06:48It's still a six-point game.
06:49They still have to walk out and score a touchdown.
06:51The game has not changed.
06:52I just don't, I don't understand the logic of thinking.
06:55It's so conservative.
06:56And then to top it off,
06:58do I think Arch Manning was fantastic last night?
07:01No, I mean, I don't think it was the greatest quarterback
07:03showing I've ever seen,
07:04but that's a really good defense on the other side,
07:06obviously, for the Buckeyes.
07:08And I'm watching it,
07:09especially as we get to the fourth quarter.
07:11And even earlier in that game,
07:13because I guess everyone just wants to forget about the fact
07:15that he got sold by not one,
07:16but both of his NFL caliber wide receivers,
07:19Ryan Wingo decided to let one go right through his hands.
07:21And Cam Coleman decided to pop one up off his chest
07:23and give it away to the Buckeyes early in the game.
07:27But especially in that fourth quarter,
07:29I'm watching Arch and just going,
07:31you know, he's not having to do anything too fantastic.
07:34It's like, you know, you're getting a lot of gash runs.
07:36He's just hitting the guys that are open.
07:38And he made a couple of really nice throws.
07:40But I'm like, this is phenomenal game management.
07:43Like, this is exactly what you want to see.
07:45The poise to just keep the offense churning,
07:48elongate drives, 15 plays, 12 plays,
07:51burning time off the clock, but doing it efficiently.
07:54And it's like, it's going exactly to plan.
07:56And I walk away from that game going,
07:58that was a phenomenal,
07:59like put together win by Arch Manning.
08:01That was of NFL caliber.
08:03And then I go on social media and it's like,
08:05I have people in my mentions commenting on our clips from Monday,
08:08where I was talking about Arch comedy on clips from,
08:11you know, later this week,
08:12I think back on Friday when I was talking about the quarterbacks in Arch
08:16and they're like, Oh, look what this kid's doing.
08:18He's got, he doesn't have it.
08:20He's overthrowing guys.
08:20I'm like, did we watch the same game?
08:22Like, is this what it's going to be?
08:23He has a bad couple of quarters where he doesn't get, you know,
08:27have magnificent things to happen to him from his, again,
08:30NFL caliber wide receivers.
08:32And we're just going to act like he played like stank the entire game.
08:34Jay, it was an execution masterclass in the,
08:38in the second half, like in, in the first half,
08:40like he missed that one really bad throw over the middle.
08:44Other than that though,
08:45I can't put the blame on him when he's putting the football right on the
08:48dude's hands.
08:49And it's just popping out of their hands and into Buckeyes defenders.
08:51Like I can't put the blame on him, you know, regarding that.
08:55And I'll say this too,
08:57as it pertains to the conversation about the Browns,
08:59because already this morning I'm in my car on the way down to the station
09:03and I'm getting texts saying the March for Arch starts today.
09:07Arch Manning, the mission is there.
09:10He showed us last night why he's worth losing games this season for the Browns.
09:15We talked last year, dude, that I can't bring myself to that point.
09:19Like,
09:19I don't think I could actively sit there and hope that the Browns lose games just
09:24because April is a long way away from now.
09:26Um, and I certainly can't do it in week one,
09:29but for those that want to see the Browns lose this year,
09:33I no longer have pushback against those folks.
09:37I don't like, I have no more soap box to stand on.
09:41You won't see me Nick Wilson in this thing and yelling down at all of the
09:45peasants.
09:45You know,
09:46you must be anti tanking because this quarterback class might be the goods
09:51dude.
09:51Like what I've seen from Arch Manning.
09:54I'm sold what I've seen from Darren,
09:56Darren Mensah.
09:57Darren Mensah's looked really,
09:58I mean,
09:58they've played a couple of cupcake games obviously,
10:00but he's looked really good.
10:01CJ Carr.
10:02It continues to put out good tape.
10:04So,
10:04so let's not talk about Dante more yesterday.
10:06No,
10:07that was,
10:07that was,
10:07that was,
10:08that one was rough,
10:08but Mr.
10:09Maker was pretty good.
10:11There's enough of them putting out good tape and Arch Manning is right at
10:14the top of it.
10:15And I know,
10:16you know,
10:16some of the rumblings that have been said about the Browns and their
10:19ownership and maybe their desires to have Arch Manning play,
10:23um,
10:24for this organization.
10:25I no longer have pushback against those folks that want to see the team go
10:29out there and lose and try to secure that young man services because he,
10:33he looks to be the real deal.
10:35Yeah.
10:35Listen,
10:35I don't know if he's going to be the number one pick in the draft.
10:38I don't know that he's going to be an NFL superstar.
10:40I watched NFL starter quality play out of Arch Manning in orchestrating a
10:45comeback.
10:46That was fantastic.
10:47I mean,
10:47in every way possible,
10:49just operating and doing what you need to do,
10:51which by the way,
10:52may remind everybody is something we haven't had in a long time.
10:54Even just a guy that can go out there and do what is asked of them.
10:56Haven't had that in a very long time.
10:59That's a guy who's going to take care of business.
11:01We have a lot to get into.
11:02We can talk a little bit about Ohio state.
11:04Obviously we have a Browns game coming up right on the station today.
11:07Closer to one o'clock.
11:09We got three hours together to talk about it.
11:11I'll be here for four.
11:12I'll talk with Lance for an hour as well.
11:13A lot to get into,
11:14but right now let's go ahead and get into our kickoff conditions brought to
11:18you by our good friends over there at expert renovations at expert
11:21renovations,
11:22LLC.com.
11:24Don't be fooled by the weather.
11:25You check right now.
11:26Things look nice.
11:2876 degrees.
11:29Hey guys,
11:29the sun's not out yet.
11:30Okay.
11:30Don't be fooled.
11:31And I,
11:32it's already,
11:33I think like a 94% humidity that we're sitting at right.
11:36I mean,
11:36it's Florida.
11:36It's going to be hot in Jacksonville.
11:39It's going to be a great day to watch football in Cleveland.
11:41Now it's going to be fantastic.
11:42Now if you're up here in Northeast Ohio,
11:44you're feeling okay.
11:45But if you're down there in Florida,
11:46it's going to be hot,
11:48hot,
11:48hot.
11:49The Browns are wearing the all whites today to try to deflect some of that
11:53sunlight because it is going to be warm.
11:55There needs to be no Brown apparel.
11:58I don't even want you to go to orange apparel.
11:59No stick in the all whites.
12:01That's the way to go.
