00:00Ladies and gentlemen, former Browns quarterback, current Fox College football analyst, NFL analyst.
00:03He's on Big Noon Kickoff. Brady Quinn joins us on the show this morning.
00:06Brady, thanks for joining us.
00:08Thanks for having me, guys. How's everyone doing today?
00:10Doing well. Did you think that, we heard Ryan Fitzpatrick about it earlier today.
00:14I want to hear it from you, or your opinion, I should say.
00:17Do you think that Deshaun Watson won the quarterback competition for the Browns fair and square?
00:23Well, yeah. I mean, at the end of the day, we probably see 10% to 20% of what
00:30really is going on, right?
00:31Like, we're not able to be there for all the practices.
00:32We're not able to see everything exactly as it is from the coaching staff standpoint.
00:38So does the contract play a role? Of course it does.
00:42But at the same time, there's still a lot that we're not privy to that the coaching staff in the
00:47locker room is.
00:49And, you know, one of the things that sometimes gets overlooked, especially from people on the outside,
00:54is there's always going to be hype and excitement about the next guy, the next quarterback.
00:58But there is this sense amongst veterans, and especially guys who've been in the league,
01:02that you want a guy behind center who's going to do everything the right way,
01:06who's got experience, who's been through it, and can come in and execute the game plan to the best of
01:12his ability.
01:12Now, that doesn't mean that the best of his ability is as good as maybe the next guy.
01:15But if the younger player isn't as far along, and I think that's the part that we're really all not
01:22in on,
01:24all we get to do is see some of the snaps that we see through practice or someone charting it,
01:28which, you know, again, I always hate that because I remember a time when I was in Seattle,
01:33and, you know, usually on bootlegs, like, you never throw the backside posts.
01:37And Pete Carroll challenged the quarterbacks, and he goes,
01:39hey, I want you guys to try to make our defense play honest.
01:42And if there's a boot, and if you can, by time, figure out a way of throwing the backside post.
01:47I mean, usually it's, you know, it's your flat, it's your crosser, it's your comeback.
01:50You know, that's somewhere in there is your progression.
01:53The backside post is just to hold that backside safe from cutting the crosser.
01:56Well, the reality is we'd be throwing it up at times, and sometimes we get picked, sometimes we go incomplete.
02:00And when people are charting that, they're like, oh, what was he doing there?
02:03It's like, well, we're trying to work on something not only for us to see if we can do it,
02:06but also for our defense.
02:07So, it's just an example of things that go on that everyone on the outside is not always privy to,
02:12but they see the box score.
02:14But I do think, going back to the veteran point, like, there's veterans who might be looking at it
02:18and saying, like, hey, man, like, I just feel more confident with this guy going in there
02:22and being able to do the job.
02:23Where Shadour, who got playing time last year, but is now in a new system, he's in year two,
02:28and just isn't as experienced.
02:29So, do I think he won it fair and square?
02:32Sure, but I'm kind of really not sure what we're basing that off of.
02:37If it's just based off the 10%, 20% we've seen, I don't know that there's a huge difference
02:40between the two players based on what we've seen so far.
02:43Brady Quinn, I love that breakdown because we were just discussing.
02:47It's like you listened to the whole conversation about us charting throws
02:50and doing it almost kind of muddies it up for everybody involved.
02:55So, we're sitting here wondering if there is any offense that Todd Munkin can devise
03:01with a quarterback that just quite frankly, speaking of Watson,
03:04can't really throw the ball down the field like he used to earlier in his days.
03:07And we've seen already there's been more RPO stuff.
03:11Looks like he's going to be using his legs.
03:12They're not as worried about protecting him.
03:14Do you think that has a chance to be functional with Todd Munkin
03:17considering where Todd was coming from?
03:19Yes, I actually love Todd Munkin as a play caller.
03:22I've said this, when Todd Munkin took the job,
03:25I felt like this gives Deshaun Watson the best chance to have a shot
03:29and getting back to where he was in the NFL and making this work.
03:32Now, look, I was never a fan of how it all came about,
03:35whether it was the trade for him, given everything else he had,
03:38the decision, the contract, everything.
03:40I mean, literally, and even the pairing with Kevin Stefanski,
03:43it just never made sense for Kevin Stefanski's offense,
03:45what he liked to do, and where Sean Watson had excelled previously in college
03:49and in Houston.
03:50So, now, you look at this situation, Todd Munkin can build an offense
03:54that really plays the strengths of Sean Watson.
03:56Now, it's just about his ability to execute.
03:58And as far as his arm strength, the downfield throwing,
04:01I don't know that I'm buying into that yet.
04:03I think we've seen some examples, but one thing I would say to you is,
04:08as a quarterback, when you're in your first year with a system
04:10and you're not throwing the football as decisive and as confident
04:15as you will be later on in the year, once you've got more reps of the system,
04:18you're not splitting up reps for a quarterback competition,
04:21the ball's going to look like it's coming out stronger.
04:23The ball's going to look like it's going downfield further.
04:25It's getting to places faster.
04:27And that's just a byproduct of being more confident in what you're running,
04:30what you're being asked to run, and executing it.
04:32So, that's something to keep an eye on moving forward.
04:36If Deshaun Watson is still the starting quarterback as the season goes on
04:39and is playing well, I don't have quite as many reservations about the arm strength
04:43because I think there is a small piece of that that actually has to do
04:46with the offense being new to him and that he's running right now.
04:49Brady Quinn joining us on the show.
04:50How hard is it to install a new offense with a quarterback room
04:53that's seen as one of the not-so-good ones in the NFL,
04:56and you can tell I'm being nice?
04:59Well, I think the hard part about installing an offense,
05:02at least in this is just my opinion, is you need to install an offense
05:04that plays with the strengths of the players you have around you.
05:07So, to me, when I hear people, oh, they're installing their system,
05:10it's like, well, that system better be like, hey,
05:12what does Deshaun do well when he's in?
05:13What does Shador do well when they're in?
05:15They're not the same quarterback.
05:16You know, Deshaun used to be a bit more fleet of foot.
05:18I think he still has a lot of that, you know, to his game,
05:21and you can add that as a portion of his ability to run in the game.
05:24Shador was never that during his time at Colorado.
05:27Now, he's a capable runner, but I don't know that I'm diagramming up
05:30any zone reads or anything that's going to be involving the quarterback
05:33keeping the football in the run game if he's in the game.
05:36You know, I'm going to kind of develop more downfield plays and shots,
05:38things that, you know, he likes to do.
05:40So, in saying that, like, I think they can, again,
05:44build this offense around both these guys,
05:46but it should look different depending on who's in that quarterback.
05:50It shouldn't look like the same exact thing, you know,
05:52trying to fit both these guys into one system.
05:55You know, and then, again, that's where I think with Todd Munkin,
05:58implementing more RPOs, implementing more things that,
06:00if you go back through Deshaun Watson's time at Houston
06:02or even back to college, like he had back in those days
06:05and allowed him to be a successful quarterback.
06:07And I do think you're going to see some of those elements
06:09in their offense this season.
06:11Brady Quinn joining us on the show,
06:12former Browns quarterback, current analyst, Fox Sports.
06:15He's on big noon kickoff, doing a hell of a job.
06:18Did you see Deshaun Watson's or hear Deshaun Watson's comments
06:22in the postgame from Saturday?
06:24Yeah, yeah.
06:25And it was frustrating to hear, you know,
06:28as a former Browns quarterback, as, you know,
06:30a guy who grew up, loved the Browns, still do,
06:33because it just lacked any sort of self-awareness.
06:36It lacked any sort of fact that, hey, man,
06:38you've been paid a lot of money.
06:41And I understand that you're frustrated that maybe people cheered
06:44when you got hurt, but you know the job.
06:47But you know the job you signed up for.
06:49And it doesn't, when you're playing bad, you know,
06:52and you get booed off the field and they put the next guy
06:54and they're cheering for him, it's kind of the same thing.
06:57And I understand people, you know, they get frustrated
06:59because players always feel like that when they're out there
07:02that, you know, fans need to be more respectful about injuries
07:04and so forth.
07:05But that's part of the game, and this is all about performance.
07:08So, you know, in a way, I understand what he was trying to say.
07:13He's taking out his frustrations in a moment when he was vulnerable
07:16and he's obviously had a lot of time to think about it
07:19and kind of, in that moment, kind of unleashed maybe some emotions.
07:23But he also has to understand, like, this is a fan base
07:25that's dying for a winner.
07:27You know, you were brought in with the expectation to be that.
07:30You were brought in with the expectation with that contract
07:33to be there for the long haul.
07:35And he hasn't been there often, and he hasn't been good
07:36when he has been in.
07:38So it's as simple as that.
07:40It's not personal.
07:40It's just business.
07:42And that's the reality is these fans are paying their hard-earned money
07:45to come watch a product on the field, and they want to see you perform.
07:49And so, again, like from the, you know,
07:52however many $1,000 diamond earrings he's putting on
07:54and a watch and everything else, as he's sitting up there saying this,
07:57it's like it's hard for Browns fans to absorb that
08:01and really anyone else for that matter.
08:03So, look, an apology is fine, but I'm sure there's a lot of people
08:06who kind of came away saying, look, man, you're going to be our starter,
08:09and you need to go up there and say something
08:11because this isn't going to be good.
08:12We've got a couple weeks away from home, but when we come back,
08:14if you're still the guy, you're going to get booed again,
08:17especially if you don't play well.
08:18So I'm sure that was part of the motivation with the apology.
08:21All right.
08:21I know we're short on time with Brady Quinn.
08:23I want to get this in there.
08:24I know you've been a backup in the NFL,
08:26and that could be a tough spot to just come in and be ready.
08:29So that's Shador's situation now.
08:31Now, I'm guessing you didn't have people in your inner circle
08:34threatening media members and going on social media campaigns,
08:37but that seems to be the case with Shador.
08:39How would you advise him to behave during this process?
08:44There's going to be media trying to stick microphones in his –
08:48he's so quotable, and he gives these great quotes.
08:51How would you advise him to act during this period?
08:55Just try to be seldom seen, and everything that he does say
08:58is always in preparation for the team, helping them win,
09:01helping Deshaun do the best he can do.
09:03I mean, that's the thing is you don't want to be distraction,
09:05and obviously the quarterback competition in general is always a distraction,
09:08especially as one like this that might bleed into the season.
09:11So you just got to do all you can to try to be a guy that's helping the team
09:15and allow – really allow yourself to operate the way you would want to
09:20back up to operate if you're the guy.
09:21Yeah, because if that transition does happen,
09:24you don't want Deshaun to be a distraction to you,
09:25and you want him to be helpful to you,
09:27and you want him to be helpful in helping your defense prepare,
09:29running scout team and all that.
09:30So it sounds like something you tell your kids, but it's true.
09:36Treat the situation when you're a backup like you would want your backup
09:39to treat you once you're the starter,
09:40and he's got to prepare himself to be the starter one day.
09:44Brady Quinn, you know him.
09:46Great analyst, also the founder of the Third and Goal Foundation,
09:49the number 3andg.org, making a difference in the lives of veterans in need.
09:55Check that out.
09:56He is the founder of that organization.
09:58Brady, thank you very much for the time.
09:59Looking forward to talking to you again soon.
10:01Yes, sir.
10:02Thank you, guys.
10:02Go Browns.
10:03Brady Quinn, box sports, college football analyst, NFL analyst,
