00:00let's go out to the make it right call cow right hot one actually think there's one person that
00:03would appreciate what's unique about myself today and i think it's ashley hello ashley how are you
00:08what you think i i do appreciate it and i do have to say for the record i do not
00:14eat hot dogs with
00:15only ketchup so you've been marked safe in this conversation jp thank you i knew i could i knew
00:22i could count on you i i feel like there's not many people we bring on that i consistently can
00:26be like i know i can count on them you're one of them though i appreciate that and daryl sits
00:31right
00:31behind me in the media room so i think he knows that too i i can vouch for ashley she
00:37is definitely
00:38all reliable 100 all right let me ask you about the move that's maybe questionable though we'll get to
00:42the browns in a second uh so for years i have been uh saying that my birthday is two dates
00:48my birthday
00:49is april 22nd but it's easier in the scroll tab to just make it april 1st and so uh for
00:55years i have
00:56been like telling businesses that my birthday is actually april 1st and like today is april 1st and
01:01so the fun thing about that is i've gotten all sorts of emails for free things and happy birthday
01:05and it's like i celebrate two birthdays now and i don't hate this development
01:11you know i can't fault you for that one because most of the time these birthday deals are a month
01:18long
01:18anyway but look i do have to give a shout out to my mom because it actually is her birthday
01:23today
01:24she is an actual april 1st april fool's birthday person so when i go home i'm gonna ask her what
01:32she thinks about all of this and i'll get back to you if she's actually offended by you taking her
01:37birthday her actual birthday away from her tell her happy birthday but also if she wants she can just
01:42start putting april 22nd and then the two of us can just celebrate those two days and it'll be great
01:46yeah it'll just it'll cancel each other out you guys trade birthday gifts i'm kind of liking this
01:52idea it's perfect all right ashley uh you were were you at the owners meetings or no i was not
01:58no my
01:58colleague mary k cabot though had i think coverage of every possible browns angle you can from those
02:05meetings over at cleveland.com yeah no question about it and honestly in today's day and age you get all
02:10the video and you get all the reaction that you need anyway so it is what it is uh so
02:13all right let's
02:13start with andrew barry and what he had to say he seemed in my opinion i i i don't really
02:21know what
02:21to take away with what he said in regards to shador and deshaun and everything in between but
02:25between andrew barry and jimmy hasham that i felt like they were singing a very positive deshaun tune
02:31meanwhile with todd munkin it was a very positive shador tune how did you read it yeah that was kind
02:38of exactly how i read it as well which which is funny and and i know uh mary kay and
02:44of course our
02:44other colleague dan lobby is they were recapping the meetings on our podcast this week it was like
02:50each day you you kind of felt that shift right like we've even been joking about it because it was
02:56so
02:57pro deshaun uh those first couple of days it felt like when andrew barry and jimmy hasham talked as
03:03you said that it sort of had me thinking from afar like wow is is it like really feasible that
03:09deshaun
03:09could start week one for this football team right now uh but then when todd munkin spoke the other day
03:17on on tuesday uh to me it did feel like that pendulum swung back a little bit just knowing the
03:24things he said about how last season ended for example right where obviously shador standards was
03:31your starter at the end of last season and deshaun watson wasn't even active so uh to me i think
03:37the the answer lies somewhere in the middle probably that look they they haven't been able to evaluate
03:43these guys on field yet uh they probably don't know but i at least so far from hearing what todd
03:49munkin said uh i think this plan is maybe a little bit better than the plan they had for off
03:56season
03:56reps last year in that four-way quarterback competition uh so that was my big takeaway
04:02like it felt very pro deshaun at the beginning of all of this but then when todd munkin talked it
04:07was
04:07like well not so fast let's let's take last year into account as well well uh i mean do we
04:13really
04:13believe though that this is going to be todd munkin's call i i know the organization is saying that
04:18it's todd's call but historically they do like to collaborate so just your read on this situation
04:25like that collaboration yeah yeah i mean that collaboration is always important right and i
04:30mean i think we we see it a lot being in that room and covering everything that we have to
04:36cover and
04:36and that's sort of how they're always talking about things right it's how they talked about the coaching
04:41search that it's going to be collaborative but you know what's interesting in all this to me is like
04:47obviously this idea of todd munkin being so like old school mixed with new school like you got to
04:53believe todd munkin's in that seat for the first time i think he's going to want to have most of
04:58the say there and obviously he's very different than kevin stefanski in the sense of he just
05:03says more we've already i think gotten a very very small taste of that but i even think something as
05:10simple as uh at those meetings this week saying like oh yeah i haven't seen dylan gabriel in the
05:15building like kevin stefanski never would have said something like that or revealed who had been in the
05:21building or anything like that so he operates very differently uh i do think ultimately you're
05:27going to be looking at a collaborative process because that's just how this front office and
05:30ownership group has done it but uh as that goes on i'm curious how that's all going to play out
05:35well you mentioned dylan gabriel do you feel like that was them telling us that dylan gabriel's time is
05:39done or is it just he's just not there because he didn't need to be there it could be so
05:46many
05:46things i don't feel like it's them saying oh his time is done um mainly you know i mean i
05:51think back
05:52to the coordinator press conferences when offensive coordinator travis switzer you know i thought went
05:57out of his way to mention him we talked about he actually mentioned him first but like i think from
06:02the outside looking in and i i am the first to admit i think i am a bit harder on
06:07players when they're
06:08not at things like voluntarily i you can go back and read what i've written listen to what i've said
06:13when
06:13like miles garrett skips otas for example i don't like it uh and i think if you have a team
06:19that's
06:19saying the quarterback competition is open and you're dylan gabriel from the outside looking in
06:24uh that's like tough then to not be there and i'm sort of like as as the person looking at
06:29it well why
06:30aren't you there uh does that mean like he has a feeling he's not in the competition like i don't
06:36know
06:36that's just an unknowable answer right now but i definitely think it's interesting that he's not there
06:43and like we obviously heard this week that shador sanders has been in the building a ton jimmy
06:48haslam praised him for all the work he's doing so uh there's definitely a dichotomy there that we can
06:53at least point to and recognize after this week i think ashley you mentioned miles garrett obviously
06:59he too uh getting some headlines at the owners meetings the uh andrew barry did not want to talk
07:05about any of the reasons why they decided to uh adjust uh payments in the contract that they didn't
07:12have to adjust and gives them very little cap uh flexibility this specific year um do you believe
07:20that what they say about they're not trading miles garrett or at least they don't have plans to trade
07:27miles garrett uh is true and i don't and as part of that too i feel like they're trying to
07:32normalize
07:32what is going to be his absence from the offseason program i i definitely think they're trying to
07:40normalize that i think they did a poor job of trying to normalize that in the past and again like
07:45somebody like me who's always hard on him for not showing up like i think if you're miles garrett
07:50you should be held to a higher standard right so when things are voluntary they can't count against you
07:57but you know i think it makes a huge impact if somebody like miles garrett is there for that
08:02voluntary stuff because ultimately these are still important sessions that you can be at and
08:08you're in a leadership role obviously so that part of it is interesting to me i do tend to believe
08:14them that they don't have any plans to trade him because it's like why would you if you were just
08:19going to trade him after everything that happened last year why wouldn't you have done it last year
08:24when there was a no trade or there wasn't a no trade clause now he has one so now you're
08:28talking
08:29about your first round draft pick compensation uh only being from a team where he in theory would
08:35want to go and that would be like worse first round picks obviously because you're assuming they're a
08:40better team uh so i believe them i mean i thought it was interesting that to me when i saw
08:45the clips
08:46coming out of andrew barry being asked about this almost being defiant in having to talk about it again
08:52uh i thought was interesting but to me it kind of like dropped the veil a little bit in no
08:58he he like
08:58means business this is not a thing they're thinking about so that was just kind of my read
09:03on the situation and and yeah i mean i'll still be talking about why i think it's important miles
09:08care should be at these voluntary practices even if a lot of other people uh don't think that do you
09:14think there's still a chance he's he's unhappy with the organization i went back and i listened to
09:18what he said yeah right before the end of the season i i i spoke about it and played the
09:23audio on
09:23my sunday show uh do you think that oh you know todd munkin's in they didn't hire jim schwartz who
09:29he really wanted them to hire you think there's a chance that maybe miles is a little uh still
09:34unsettled about the direction of the organization going forward i think that's a great question
09:41daryl i think we're not going to know for sure what miles garrett is thinking until the next time we
09:47speak to miles garrett which uh is typically how it goes and and the reason i say that is
09:53there's been so many times i think over the years and this is my sixth or seventh year covering miles
09:59now you've obviously covered him longer than i have his whole tenure here but he has a way of like
10:05surprising you and you can think like he's not really thinking anything uh or he's not going to
10:10say anything and he does you can think he's going to say something and he doesn't like i mean the
10:14prime
10:14examples to me are uh in 2021 when you remember we went through that whole week of odell beckham
10:20jr forcing his way out everyone said oh yeah i haven't talked to odell don't know what's going
10:26on and then miles gets up there not only does he say he's talked to odell he kind of took
10:31a shot at
10:32the front office for how they handled the whole thing right yeah you can have moments like that
10:37uh with miles at any point in time so uh i i always like to think until there's a reason
10:42to think he
10:43feels a certain type of way i give him the benefit of the doubt because you really have to let
10:49things
10:49play out with him i think for sure ashley bass dot cleveland.com joining us on the make it right
10:54call kyle wright hotline all right let me ask you this if the theory out there is something along the
11:00lines of the browns are just trying to uh give you all this quarterback information and just flood you
11:05with this shadora versus deshaun stuff as almost like a misdirection to then take ty simpson if that's
11:11a thought that exists out there how much weight would you put into it and would you buy it at
11:15all
11:16you can never trust i think anything that you hear at this time of year right like i i sort
11:24of always
11:25view everything around the draft through that lens like in theory what you are describing yeah that
11:33wouldn't surprise me right because that's kind of how smoke screens work that's sort of a perfect
11:39smoke screen uh as you're heading into the draft but you know look with ty simpson i think so much
11:45of
11:45it depends on how far he's he's willing to drop like we know he's visiting with the jets i think
11:50they're having a private workout with him they obviously are another team in need of a quarterback
11:55and they pick ahead of the browns there's a lot at play here but that's certainly i think the the
12:02sort
12:03of smoke screen scenario you described is not unheard of like it would actually make a lot of sense but
12:09i
12:09think the important thing to note is it's one of those things that if it makes sense it's going to
12:14make
12:14sense in hindsight right and we'll we'll start connecting the dots and and it's sort of like
12:20what i point to is last year in the draft when andrew berry got up there in his pre-draft
12:25press
12:25conference and saying all these amazing things about travis hunter and comparing him to shohei
12:30otani and in hindsight it's like okay you were doing that as the gm because you're just reinforcing
12:36that yes the jacksonville jaguars you are making the right decision here to trade with us so we can move
12:43back to five so you can never trust anything you hear at face value at this time of year but
12:48i think
12:48unfortunately with how secretive things have gotten uh fortunately for the teams we're not going to be
12:53able to put all those pieces together until after the fact all right ashley great stuff as always wish
12:58your mom a happy birthday is she a uh is she a ice cream cake type person cookie cake type
13:03person what
13:03what type of cake more of like we actually got cupcakes today so i love a good fancy cupcake so
13:11that's what
13:11we went with i love a fancy cupcake i fun fact about me fancy cupcakes i mess with them all
13:16right
13:16thank you ashley i appreciate you thanks guys all right that's ashley in the make it right
13:21call cow right hotline and we are not going to ask you to expound upon that at all
13:26you
