00:13Hello my little friends, today, thanks to my fabulous time machine, we're going back to 1992, yes!
00:24Yes, I know, you're wondering where I got this absolutely fabulous English accent!
00:29Well, it's quite simple, it's thanks to video games!
00:31Yes indeed, in my day, if you wanted to play video games, you had to learn the language of Prince Charles.
00:36If you wanted to understand, you had to learn.
00:39In 1990, the connection with the Channel Tunnel brought us closer to our English friends,
00:46while a team of game translators seemed, on the other hand, to want to steer us away from it.
00:51Indeed, in terms of English, not all video games were exemplary.
00:54including the famous Zero Wing, adapted for the Mega Drive, known for its gameplay qualities,
01:00but also for its appalling barbarisms, such as the famous
01:03"All your bases are belong to us," which could be translated as "All your bases belong to us."
01:10to us."
01:11Well, shooting enthusiasts can rest assured, in 1990 we also had some very good shots!
01:17Yes, absolutely, Turrican! Exactly, a very good game, Turrican, only we've already talked about it here.
01:23We're not going to go back to that, we're going to take advantage of the situation to have some fun.
01:28with first of all Zero Wing, followed very, very closely, my little friends, by the excellent name Wings.
01:38The rare gem of video games, who speaks English like my Spanish cow, is right here before your very eyes.
01:43!
01:44There are different ways to leave your mark on your era, such as testing the buoyancy of breast implants
01:48in a swimming pool, under the cameras of a loft, or by inventing a brilliant concept,
01:52a type of interlocking geometric shapes to form lines.
01:55Well, Zero Wing falls squarely into the first category. Smoke and mirrors, basically.
02:00In the Japanese version, everything was fine, and then suddenly, for Europeans and Americans,
02:04The dialogues had to be translated into English, and that's where the trouble started.
02:08Absolutely delightful, but for anyone who speaks a little English, it's nothing but incongruities and barbarisms.
02:13in the vein of, you know what you're doing, or the famous, all your bases belong to us.
02:19At the same time, it's quite unfair and reductive to only talk about that.
02:22Zero Wing may not be a powerhouse in English,
02:25But it's a perfectly honest, well-made and very effective shot.
02:29If you cross his path, stop.
02:39Shooting is like swimming, it can be done in many different places.
02:43Space, the jungle, or the dangerous and infamous skies of the First World War.
02:48In 1990, Wings spread its wings on Amiga and gave a very good lesson in how to fly.
02:55You play the role of an Allied pilot during the First World War
02:57and your talents lead you into three types of missions.
03:01Bombardment, viewed from above, you must reach strategic points.
03:04In isometric view, when strafing, you shoot down pretty much everything you can.
03:08Intense shoot-them-up style.
03:09And finally, the dogfight in full 3D.
03:13Here he is in the air, facing off against the most skilled pilots of the time,
03:16in the spirit of fair duels.
03:19In total, no fewer than 230 missions await you.
03:23which is enough to prove your bravo.
03:25Completely fluid for its time, scripted, Wings makes you want to puff out your chest and wear leather.
03:30Finally, I'm talking about the jacket, of course.
03:40During the First World War, pilots were somewhat like craftsmen,
03:44compared to the pilots of the 90s who were more involved in large-scale distribution.
03:48I remind you that in 1990, we were in the midst of the Cold War and the nuclear threat was looming.
03:53Fortunately, a certain Mireille Gorbatchev was going to take it upon herself to put things in order.
03:57He even received the Nobel Peace Prize for it in 1990.
04:01It must be said that disarmament was a real headache.
04:04that only he had managed to solve, in the end.
04:07Puzzles, in video games, are something we know all about, both literally and figuratively.
04:12The proof is right here with Pong and Panza Kickboxing.
04:18Originally released on Borde d'Arcade,
04:20Pong was a hit with many Amigas, including mine.
04:23The principle is extremely simple to understand and incredibly addictive.
04:27You play as a small character armed with a harpoon who shoots balloons.
04:30This then splits into two smaller ones that bounce faster and less high.
04:34and so on until they disappear.
04:36When they explode, some release powers that influence either your shots or the balloons themselves.
04:40In total, there are 50 levels spread across 17 different landscapes.
04:45representing famous places from all over the world.
04:47A bit like Bomb Jack, but richer and with a wider scope.
04:51Initially very simple, the tables become more complex and require more and more strategies and reflexes.
04:57Thinking quickly while being precise and fast, believe me, this game made you sweat a lot.
05:02To top it all off, you could even play it with two people simultaneously.
05:05The second player can join the game at any time.
05:08What a blast for a puzzle!
05:19Still in the series of puzzles, but with additional options,
05:22Nutcracker style and, more broadly, brawling, here is Panza Kickboxing.
05:27So Panza, at first we think it's panda with a spelling mistake, except it's not.
05:32André Panza was not the type to spend his days sucking on ham stems.
05:35No! André Panza was a kickboxing champion.
05:38who lent his name to a game which, for the time, was far from shameful.
05:42Beautiful graphics, smooth animations, and no fewer than 35 movements in total.
05:48with the ability to assign gestures to keyboard keys.
05:51You begin by preparing your champion physically in the training room.
05:55and once ripe for peaches, breads and other potatoes to enjoy in the diol,
06:00You could start the tournament.
06:02The ultimate goal, of course, is to eradicate, to help from the ring.
06:06And believe me, that was no walk in the park.
06:19Ah yes, puzzles can quickly become painful, especially when André Panza gets involved.
06:25Just think about it.
06:25I'm not saying that because of her little fuchsia bathrobe.
06:28There you go, my boy, that's good, you can go.
06:30Have a good trip.
06:31In any case, science is progressing, and so are mentalities.
06:35since in 1990, the World Health Organization finally removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses.
06:42That day, hundreds of small rainbow flags must have been waved a little
06:46all over the world.
06:48The rainbow flag, moreover, does not necessarily represent the gay and lesbian community.
06:52It depends on the number of stripes and the colors of the flag, actually.
06:55So now I'm going to tell you about Rainbow Island, the rainbow island,
06:59Don't go imagining that this is an innuendo about the sexuality of the two heroes, Bub and Bob.
07:04No, their sexuality is not addressed at all in the game.
07:06Their main concern, in fact, is dealing with rising water levels.
07:10Just like in Flood, by the way.
07:12Without further ado, I suggest we dive in.
07:18With a title like that, there's no doubt about it: Rainbow Island: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2.
07:23And well, the sequel to Bubble Bobble.
07:25Initially an arcade hit, this game eventually flourished on almost every platform of the time.
07:30including my beloved Amiga.
07:32Bob or Bub, having regained human form, must slather on a certain Dark Shadow.
07:37responsible for the removal of residents from 10 islands that are being flooded.
07:40We must therefore quickly regain the summit of each of them, kicking the asses of the villains who have put
07:45the dawa.
07:46The charm and ingenuity of this episode lie in your hero's ability to shoot bows.
07:51sky,
07:51which serve simultaneously as weapons, defenses, and platforms.
07:56The concept is solid, the levels are full of bonuses and powers,
07:59And unlike the previous episode, the paintings are no longer fixed, but benefit from vertical scrolling.
08:05Excitingly well-executed, this game is definitely a classic.
08:09Adored by the players and praised by the press.
08:19In 1990, rising sea levels seemed to inspire platform game creators.
08:24Perhaps the developers' corporation was severely affected that year by water damage.
08:28?
08:28Who knows!
08:29After Rainbow Island, it is now Flood's turn to address the issue.
08:33Developed by the excellent team at Bullfrog,
08:35who had already released Populous and would later release Syndicate,
08:39and Theme Park, and Theme Hospital, or even the incredible Dungeon Keeper,
08:43Flood plunges you into the brackish waters of a sewer system.
08:47You are that small greenish creature, and you have decided to clean the place of all the garbage that litters it
08:52pollute.
08:53And it's a lot of work, because the nasty things are numerous and scattered.
08:55Polluters are tough and hard to eradicate.
08:59And as if that weren't enough, there's the water rising, rising, rising,
09:02like the little creature of the same name.
09:05Completely offbeat, funny, surprising and unexpected.
09:08Flood has something to delight even the most disillusioned gamer.
09:21When the water rises, there's nothing you can do.
09:23No matter how prepared and equipped you are, sometimes it's not enough.
09:26For example, at the end of Flood, in the final cutscene,
09:29We can see Kifi, the hero who made it out alive,
09:32to be hit by a car, just like that, cut down in mid-air.
09:35Can you believe it? You win and then crack!
09:37It's over, and well and truly over this time.
09:39That's fate, we can't fight it.
09:41It's the cycle of life.
09:43And it's the same for computers and consoles.
09:46In 1990, Samstrad definitively abandoned Sinclair.
09:51So goodbye, ZX Spectrum.
09:54But at the same time, SNK released the Neo Geo,
09:58From Nintendo's birth to the little Game Boy,
10:01and Sega in Japan with the small Game Gear.
10:05Yes yes.
10:06Still in Japan, the Nintendo family released the Super Famicom.
10:13Magnificent! Here, Ms. Nintendo, please hold this for me.
10:16An absolutely superb console that we'll be talking about again very soon.
10:21In any case, all these births make us smile.
10:25tons of games and tons of Retro Game One for a long time.
10:27So, see you soon my little friends from Game One!
