Day after day of showers and storms keep pounding the north-central U.S., from Kansas to Minnesota.
Transcript
00:00Well, some intense lightning striking parts of Kansas.
00:06Intense lightning there in parts of Kansas here as severe weather continued to impact
00:09the north central states this week.
00:11We have more where that came from, unfortunately, tonight as well.
00:15By the way, there was an EF2 tornado confirmed from yesterday's storms in Kansas.
00:20No injuries, no fatalities.
00:22It was on the ground for a little over four miles, but that was separate from specifically
00:26that maze area.
00:27But, hey, we're tracking some more strong storms, and here's the setup this evening
00:31and into tonight, so ongoing afternoon storms firing up.
00:35You may notice we did expand slightly from 24 hours ago into more of Nebraska.
00:41The risk is there, Omaha and Lincoln, as well as Des Moines, Ames, Iowa, far northern parts
00:47of Missouri here being caught by some gusty winds and hail.
00:51There is a flash flood threat here as well, and there could be isolated tornadoes in this
00:55area as well.
00:56A broader scale, strong storms will also push into parts of northern Illinois.
01:00We have Chicago on the edge.
01:01Late tonight, maybe a weakening thunderstorm that could still have a little punch rolls
01:05into the Chicago metro.
01:07And here we have the view up into southern parts of Minnesota as well.
01:10So from eastern Nebraska into central Iowa, we have our greatest concerns, and we are including
01:16the risk for flooding.
01:18A lot of the time, we roll this graphic out, and we have, again, a medium risk, and it's
01:22wind and hail that are the main drivers.
01:24The flash flood threat's also present in this case.
01:27We want to draw extra attention to that.
01:29And as we take a look at the overnight forecast, a lot of these storms are going to be generally
01:34this area here.
01:35Kansas City, Des Moines, Peoria, late at night into Chicago.
01:39Green Bay could see some of this.
01:40Even Minneapolis, as you're on the edge and actually included in our some risk for severe
01:44storms.
01:45It's a different story west, where you're going to be under a clear sky.
01:49Rapid City, Scotts Bluff, Denver, mainly clear 60 for your low.
01:52Getting a little more summer-like out there.
01:54Patchy fog into Sault Ste. Marie.
01:55And, again, there even could be a thunderstorm or two late tonight that pushes far east as
02:00Detroit and Indianapolis.
02:02So here's future radar and clouds, and you'll notice that, again, as these storms get going,
02:06we'll be tracking scattered thunderstorms.
02:09They won't be impacting everybody, but they'll be out there for some.
02:11Saturday, a new episode for some into the Midwest.
02:14Chicago could see some.
02:15Sunday, things fire back up into the plains.
02:18So I just want to give you kind of the big picture view as we take it more piecemeal here
02:22day by day.
02:23Saturday is finally a nice break for the northern plains after a week with off and on showers
02:29and thunderstorms, many of which were severe.
02:32South Dakota had a lot of action this week for drier on Saturday.
02:37There will be a stripe of showers and thunderstorms, though, from Kansas City to Chicago to Detroit,
02:42Columbus.
02:42In some of our other updates, we're going to be digging into the northeast a bit more.
02:46We are concerned about severe weather from central Ohio into western Pennsylvania and
02:52even beyond.
02:53But for the north-central U.S., while most of the Dakotas will be quieter on Saturday,
02:59unfortunately, Saturday evening, a new round of storms rolls in from eastern Montana into
03:03western parts of North Dakota, and that will reintroduce some damaging wind and hail potential
03:08to areas like Dickinson, North Dakota.
03:10It's still west for most of us, but not for all of you in far western parts of the Dakotas.
03:15Sunday, they do take a step farther east.
03:17Bismarck back into the game here with scattered storms.
03:19Many areas in Iowa, Nebraska, southern Minnesota, again facing showers and storms.
03:25And really, it looks like most days next week are going to be both very hot in the plains,
03:30but also most days will feature scattered thunderstorms and showers around the Ohio Valley.
03:35Now, for Sunday, that severe risk is present a little farther east.
03:39We talked about Dickinson in eastern parts of Montana as well.
03:42Glendive, for example, on Saturday evening.
03:44Sunday, it's not much farther east, but the severe risk is still present up in the North
03:48Dakota.
03:48And you may be wondering why here, instead of, say, in Alabama, this time of the year,
03:52the jet stream winds pull north into Canada.
03:55That's where there's the stronger support for severe weather, stronger wind shear and so
03:59forth because of winds aloft being stronger to the north.
04:02And those winds aloft are real lazy down near the Gulf Coast at this point on the calendar.
04:07Let's go ahead to Tuesday.
04:08Now, Tuesday, we expect to see temperatures deep into the 90s.
04:11Some of you will be challenging record highs on Tuesday in parts of South Dakota, southern
04:17Minnesota, Wisconsin.
04:19This area, 90-plus for a lot of you.
04:22And that heat's going to help to fuel some strong and severe thunderstorms.
04:25And we're concerned about damaging wind, hail, downpours, and isolated tornadoes.
04:29Again, just like last week, we're back into it here in parts of the Northern Plains.
04:34And on Wednesday, Minneapolis and most of Minnesota down into Iowa facing a severe risk as well.
