00:02so seth jarvis plays hockey he does
00:06that two grand slam happens today maybe that answer is correct
00:10yep well i think he actually got it right yeah but he was guessing
00:13yeah good morning 97 one jim costa john jansen heather park gov and greg behind the glass thanks
00:21for spending your morning with us the story is dylan larkin he wants out you can feel the weight
00:27of this story this is a bombshell you have a homegrown captain who says enough is enough
00:35and it's the current captain at odds with the captain
00:42there's a stubbornness to steve where he's not going to get bullied but larkin's not happy and
00:50larkin has a no trade clause so you see how this could get messy that this could be a real
00:56life
00:56soap opera and there's a million things that popped into my head when i got the alert
01:02and there's a lot that we haven't even addressed this morning like right but i just want to start
01:08with this dylan larkin is the first person to hold steve eiserman accountable for his failed rebuild
01:16and there's gonna be a lot in the organization yes yeah fans and callers and radio hosts are
01:21different larkin is the first one to step up people are going to call him a whiner and a quitter
01:26he gave the majority of his prime to this organization eiserman's done a bad job you don't
01:31get a forever rebuild steve if there's no assurances this is going to be a real off season where we
01:37take
01:37a real leap you can trade me i'll be 30 in july he's the first person to say i'm not
01:43doing a forever
01:43rebuild you don't just get carte blanche you don't get to do this forever not with the prime of my
01:49career
01:49i'm watching my buddy jack eichel leave buffalo and win one and maybe two cups i'm watching homegrown
01:56mitch marner from toronto leave a toxic situation where the fans there blamed him he's a soft loser
02:05and now he's skating for a stanley cup whether you think larkin is on marner's caliber or not
02:11larkin sees those things larkin's a good hockey player you need more good hockey players this puts the
02:18wings in a bad spot to lose a center when they already don't have any and larkin's a guy who
02:22can
02:23score 30 goals consistently he's done it five straight seasons he was an x factor on team usa
02:28he'll play hard in all all zones and all ends of the ice losing him is bad and it looks
02:34bad for steve
02:35eiserman and it is damning that even he says i give up i want to be here enough's enough you
02:41don't get
02:41to forever rebuild now that doesn't mean larkin is blameless because i'm sure people are going to
02:48each should have scored more goals late in the season it's more on eiserman eiserman has failed
02:54larkin more than larkin has failed this team
02:59i i i don't disagree with that i think there's plenty of blame to go around and i think the
03:06the
03:06most interesting thing about this is going to be the navigating of the no trade clause what does
03:13that look like and what are the teams does does dylan larkin and his agent have they explored
03:20what this looks like i i imagine they're not jumping into this saying well we're just fed up here
03:25you know trade you probably have a couple spots in mind sure um where are those and what's the
03:32potential of what's coming back because that's that's also something that hopefully his agent has
03:38explored of okay not only do you want out but there is a legitimate shot that you could go to
03:46one of
03:46these let's just say four teams yeah and maybe it's only three teams because they have and we've got
03:53indication that they may be willing to send x players back to the wings yeah i put steve in a
04:00tough
04:00spot though because if it is only three or four teams that he can negotiate as opposed to
04:05the other 31 you're not getting the biggest return possible just by definition if you could work
04:13everybody off because larkin's contract is attractive and larkin is a good hockey player
04:17if you could shop him to the whole league you'd be in a better spot now this is public he
04:22has the no
04:23trade clause is going to get backed into a corner now he may just choose to sit on it let
04:28it fester
04:29and let this get really ugly because he doesn't want to take a bad deal but that's still not good
04:32for the organization right um it will be interesting to see because we have we've we've heard about this
04:42and i think you and i both believe this is probably coming from larkin's camp yeah it only it hurts
04:48eiserman i don't know why the team would leak this but we haven't had a response from the organization
04:52and i don't know that we will until we hear of a trade or we hear them say i'm sorry
04:58no we're not
04:58trading you eiserman's normally real buttoned up so i can't imagine we're going to get very much
05:02it's gonna be fort knox but how does he handle it because frosty relationship was how this was
05:09described between the two well it could get a lot frostier can eiserman look at this as an opportunity
05:13he should right he should he should say okay it didn't work out here dylan you're you're we gave you
05:20the c we didn't get what we wanted from you as the total package maybe they got totally what they
05:27were expecting as a player but maybe they get it he fell short in regards to what they needed from
05:33him as a leader i think it's tough because you're not trading dylan for a true one c teams don't
05:39give
05:39up one c's not to downgrade the position yeah one for one your best hope is you could get a
05:45center
05:45who's younger with a little more upside than larkin to try to re-roll right to get another crack at
05:52this
05:55but that has to be a place that larkin would approve that has that player
06:02i think there's so many questions here right when does this get done is it the nhl draft so they
06:08can
06:08plan for free agency and beyond do they have a captain next season if larkin's gone is most cider
06:15the captain i would think so because he's he's a they call him the diesel engine he plays every game
06:20he plays hard he is very much the the next wave he's their best player i also wonder what does
06:28this
06:28mean for alex to bring it alex to bring it has a year left on his deal he's his own
06:33man he doesn't
06:34have to see it the same way larkin does but he does need to know what the direction of the
06:38team is
06:40does he say i want to see i'm committed to being here i'll sign an extension i'll lead this group
06:46i
06:46he people have this thing with him he's small so he's not tough he plays a tough brand of hockey
06:52and
06:52he was delivering when very few were at the end of the season does he stick around is he the
06:56captain
06:56or does he look at this and go the rats are fleeing a sinking ship i only have a year
07:02left i'll play
07:03the year with my buddy kane and then i gotta really reevaluate i don't know i mean there's
07:07a domino effect here how do players around the league view the red wings because larkin is held
07:12in high regard the people who played with him on team usa like him if they look at it and
07:17go boy how
07:17bad is it in detroit if waterford's own homegrown decade-long captain is out on eiserman do guys want
07:27to come here they're already having a hard enough time getting meetings in free agency with high-level
07:31free agents or players willing to come here and sign extensions
07:35i mean there's so much fallout that comes from this
07:41248-539-9797 and i think at the heart of all of this is if this is a step back
07:48and it most
07:48certainly will be trading dylan larkin how far does this push the timeline back and does eiserman
07:54automatically get eiser plan 2.0 and how long does that last like i'm not suggesting that the
08:00illiches side with larkin here and cave in and fire steve and try to capitulate larkin i have no idea
08:08there would that would not happen that's not going to happen but how does eiserman pivot from this
08:13and stay clean well the the only way to pivot and stay clean is you're not going to go and
08:21get a
08:21top line center just with dylan larkin but can you package are you willing to package
08:28some of your valued prospects are you willing to package lucas raymond or somebody else on the
08:36roster that together you might be able to upgrade one position right you're not going to upgrade them
08:42all that's the thing then it becomes we already needed two centers now we also need our top winger
08:47because we traded hypothetically raymond or whoever they bundle right we already don't have enough
08:52good players and now we have to add to the larkin deal to get a decent return yeah diminishing is
08:58a
08:58larkin cosa and first a first and does that allow you to get a decent return again yeah these are
09:06all
09:06questions that and it's it's we can throw names out there well i want to get up to to steve
09:12eiserman to
09:12figure out who that is and can he make them better this year which i don't think is possible i
09:19won't
09:19even take credit for this name but i love the idea from will birchfield 97 on the ticket.com he
09:25was on
09:25yesterday with valennian rico he went through this like who makes sense and who doesn't make sense
09:30exercise and he brought up new jersey because new jersey would be a place that in theory larkin would
09:36want to go to jack hughes team usa teammate maybe they end up getting quinn hughes and luke hughes and
09:42they all play together they have a center nico heischer who's three years younger than dylan larkin
09:49who scored 35 goals two years ago plays responsible defensive hockey he he's been in the selkie voting
09:58three straight years i don't know why new jersey would give him up in the deal if if eiserman's over
10:04a
10:04barrel but that would be the type of guy if you could get him back you could you could save
10:08face
10:09well the the way that you make that happen is if they well i don't know if you make it
10:15happen but
10:15the way it happens if they believe dylan larkin is an upgrade now and they're in a we got to
10:22go for
10:22it now type of mode right we got open lines we want to get the phone calls we want to
10:28read your text
10:29248-539-9797 let's get to dan and macomb dan good morning good morning guys um you know there's blame
10:37to go around everywhere but i want to ask john a question because he played professional sports
10:42john how would you feel if you know you're a good player very good player in your time
10:48and you had a bunch of good players around you on a team and one of your captains of your
10:52football team
10:53said i'm getting out of here i'm bailing how would that make you feel as a teammate
11:00uh so as a professional it's it's not a lot it's not different than when guys would hold out at
11:07the
11:07beginning of the year it's it's your the team aspect is different at the pro level than it is at
11:13the college level and that's okay that's changing a little bit as well but hey at the pro level it's
11:21your career it's your money it's it's it's all of these things so if that's what you want to do
11:27then hey go for it and we'll move on with somebody else right well you know looking at the bigger
11:36picture um i know i've been you know there's a lot of blame to go around for him but to
11:43have a guy who
11:44comes out throws his you know gm under the bus two years ago and and my feeling has been this
11:50way all
11:50the time when i've called it i don't think dylan larkin is a i don't think he's any type of
11:55a
11:55superstar or even a very good player i've always said he's average because you know why you guys
12:01might not be old enough to remember but look back in the 70s you guys remember dale mccourt
12:07as the center for the wings i don't know if you remember him from this late 70s i was negative
12:1220
12:13years old but you i'm curious go ahead and make the comparison all right well he averaged
12:180.90 points per game in his nhl career played about five years with the wings when they when
12:24they went to the playoffs in 77 78 okay larkin is averaging 0.79 so he's not even as good
12:31as dale
12:32mccourt was who probably half the listeners here wouldn't even think of dale mccourt so i feel good
12:40riddance move on get somebody else i mean eisenberg like i said he has not been very good with his
12:47draft
12:47picks because his centers have not proven themselves so far with casper and danielson in the
12:53minors they've not been what he thought they were going to be but if this is an opportunity for him
12:58to grab somebody else through a trade there's a lot of people out there that might be available
13:03jason robertson is wanting 14 million a year from dallas and dallas can't afford to pay him and then
13:10that up-and-coming young center they got that might be an opportunity for the wings there and you know
13:15so and robert thomas who know you know there's a lot of options out there but it's tough like
13:20robert thomas plays in st louis and i can't imagine larkin's gonna okay going to st louis
13:25dallas would be interesting that's jim nill former red wing executive has had a team on the cusp
13:29they could get tougher down the middle putting larkin on the second line robertson's from michigan
13:34but he plays on the wing right you'd still be real soft down the middle and you'd have to pay
13:39him
13:40a lot of money right so you're you're taking an area where you knew you needed to get better
13:44and getting worse right that's why this is so messy
