How do you imagine this all playing out for the Detroit Red Wings?
Transcript
00:00we will talk soccer 735 one word to describe that and uh yeah if people want to line up to
00:07tar and feather me i get it we'll address the cost of lock and what's holding our country back
00:13from actually succeeding in soccer jim costa with stoney we've got uh gov and greg behind the glass
00:18it's tuesday we got the two grand slam coming up at 7 25 i cannot wait to see what's going
00:25to
00:25happen with dylan larkin okay this is interesting elliot friedman 32 thoughts he did a four hour
00:32podcast wow that's like cash the ticket five star zone restore the floor all in one it's our entire
00:42show plus the commercials plus see now podcasts to me should not be longer than an hour and 45 well
00:55okay an hour okay for me personally but the ones i listen to besides the ones at the station
01:02they're all like i listen to spitting chiclets i listen to you know bill simmons some of them go
01:08to the spitting chiclets which i love that goes like two three hours sometimes so i just listen to
01:13double speed and and my wife goes what are you listening to how can you understand what they're
01:18saying but you get used to it you get used to it so it turns into spitting chipmunks right who
01:24has
01:24enough time to listen to four hours of a podcast the answer is very few people i think what he
01:30did
01:31is he broke down almost every team's current situation with intel and fans are just going to
01:36pick and choose so of course we circled the red wing section what intel is there we go to the
01:42audio
01:43vault where we have four different uh little quotes on where the wings are the first deals with dylan
01:51larkin you said you're very interested to see where this goes what about his value now after what
01:55happened with leo carlson in the offer sheet
02:22well don't draw too hard it's a note with the world you're you're you're ask is so astronomical
02:28please don't do that well you could argue he's got the best contract in hockey
02:34yeah yeah that is valuable oh no i'm not look what elliot friedman is saying is correct
02:40but let's not stevie's got to say all right yes so my ass might have gone up now because of
02:46this
02:46but let's not make it absurd like to me the whole matt boldy thing is absurd don't make it so
02:52valuable
02:53that nobody can buy it right by the way the best contract in hockey is probably his teammate mo
02:59cider who's even cheaper than larkin and got mvp votes but larkin's contract is a bargain yes
03:04especially as the cap explodes and teams are are throwing money around okay so he's going to draw an
03:09even harder line how willing is he to actually make a move
03:16and he's going to draw an across the line okay so he's going to be able to draw the question
03:33and i can't leave the question and make a move
03:37and what I'm saying the answer is he's going to tell him
03:38or kinda do if he's going to just come and walk around but I do believe that he keeps the
03:44answer
03:51he is right no trade is better than a bad trade there sure the question is if there is no
03:59trade
03:59does larkin say f the money i don't i'm not showing up oh i think he'll still play you think
04:06there's a real shot i don't know probably he might i don't know we're not hearing nobody's
04:11hearing anything from him so we don't know i have no idea he can't wear the c right so there's
04:20a major
04:20humiliation factor for him in that he's hoping that larkin blinks that's an awfully humongous pill
04:27to swallow so eiserman's working two fronts he's hoping larkin blinks and expands the list to avoid
04:33the humiliation and the embarrassment he's also drawing this line in the sand of you know we
04:37expect to get comparable proven nhl players in return for dylan larkin right which i don't
04:43know why a contender's giving up a larkin for a larkin at that point they'd say you know forget
04:47about it well unless for money's sake other than that yeah but we know eiserman doesn't like paying
04:54higher salaries for players so he's going to take back a bigger salary to save the other team money
04:58i don't see that happening either probably not uh more from elliot friedman 32 thoughts eiserman
05:05wants nhlers
05:23makes sense yes jives with everything else it said and uh at least and i'll agree with stevie here
05:29his fan base doesn't want futures no how about the now the here the now right alex de brinkett
05:38one year left on his contract this might have been the most illuminating thing that was said
05:43on the podcast as it pertains to our red wings this is thought on de brinkett
05:50obao
05:51yeah
05:54and um
06:21damn right they are but the unwillingness to pay market rate for de brinket first of all
06:26you'd be lucky if he wanted to stay on this sinking ship correct the idea that you'd go to
06:31him and try to hometown discount him is laughable this is not an attractive place to play hockey
06:39and the only reason he's here is because he grew up here and now you're going to try to leverage
06:43that to squeeze more from him and it looks like you want to be here and it looks like his
06:47kids
06:48best friends aren't going to be here either so friedman did say that it was a short little
06:52mention so we didn't cut it but yeah patrick kane they don't expect him to come back eiserman has
06:56said they want him back yeah which shows me another casualty of the dysfunction if they
07:00don't bring him back and de brinket would be an even bigger casualty because he's in the prime
07:04he's 40 goal scorer he's one of the few good hockey players they have he's not afraid to and eiserman
07:08doesn't want to pay him in the corners yes but he doesn't want to pay him what he's worth stoney
07:11and
07:12i think that is what this all circles back to is eiserman out of touch with today's hockey he might
07:17he probably is if if he's out of whack with the league and he wants to do it his way
07:23but the other
07:2331 gms are operating in a different universe it becomes our problem that he doesn't want to adapt
07:30right i also heard from elliot friedman that carolina may be poking around on simon edvinson
07:36they may try to offer sheet our big blue liner is is steve ready for that hopefully i don't know
07:43does he disagree with the price of defensemen and how does he handle it if someone offer sheets him
07:48you see what i'm saying like all roads lead back to eiserman not being in sync with today's hockey
07:52absolutely i think this offer sheet thing is something to really keep an eye on when's it uh
07:58when's carlson got to decide by it's a week it was a week right yeah so he's got about four
08:03more days
08:03left the end of this week then right if the flyers end up getting him i think you're going to
08:09see other
08:09teams start doing this i think it opens the door if not you kind of allude to it yesterday the
08:14taboo part
08:15of this we don't do this in the nhl to other teams is the thought there because then it'll be
08:20done to
08:20us like if we do this then other teams will take that out against us i would be stunned if
08:26you didn't
08:26see another major offer sheet retaliation maybe not a bedard and there is a little bit of a
08:30retaliation aspect of what the flyers are doing it's a long deep story but um we'll leave it for
08:36philly sports radio exactly but i i think if if this happens if carlson it's when's the last time a
08:43major player like this left on an offer sheet was it scott was scott scott stevens maybe does
08:49it go back that far so i know some public ones where teams attempted yeah sackick and the rangers
08:54sackick and the rangers being a huge one right um you could fedor off and carolina yes locally right
09:00and there was a little bit of a how about spice to that with the owners illich and carmanos locally
09:05that usually there's a an extra layer to an offer sheet but how about the current stanley cup champs
09:10they dealt with it with ajo yeah so but if i have been a player in free agency of quality
09:17and then somebody does this because they can't do that which what the flyers are doing trying to get
09:21what top line center they haven't had one forever plus he's young he's 21 years old the flyers are
09:25sitting here going and tell me if this sounds familiar we don't really have a path to a 1c as
09:30a
09:30borderline playoff team we're willing to give up picks that we project to be outside the lottery
09:37and we're willing to overpay because the cap's going up it it feels like the perfect storm
09:42and it's the same situation roughly that we're in yeah and they're willing to do it and that's
09:47the red wings were are willing to overpay they have overpaid for cop and comfort that's the thing
09:54that kills you stony what about the underappreciated ben sherratt yeah they made sure to take care of him
10:03term he has he being steve his way of doing things yeah and it's like f the other gms you
10:11got to do what's good for yourself they're all doing it wrong i'm doing it right yeah the problem
10:15is you don't exist in a vacuum no you're not playing you know nhl ea sports you know you're
10:20describing to a degree with tom iso's approach nil at the beginning yeah i mean you got to adjust you
10:24got to the situation has changed it's not the nhl that uh steve eiserman when he helped build the
10:31lightning it's a different nhl now you have to adapt and player empowerment's a big thing too
10:37i think there's a wisdom in if we're gonna win a cup we can't have ridiculous contracts because we
10:42need to keep everybody but we're nowhere near that stage we got to get the good players first yes
10:49you know cup and red wings come on you know like the panthers have to try to save money on
10:53sam
10:54bennett because they're up against the cap right and they have to hold the line contractually on
10:58salaries it's like steve is already trying to box everybody in and we're not even a playoff team
11:08248-539-9797 vince you hear the latest you're on 97.1 good morning hi how's it going good
11:16so i think looking at the cider deal and the larkin deal and the even the raymond deal i think
11:23we have
11:23all three of those guys signed it under nine million a year yep and the red wings have always
11:27been a team that we don't pay more than our captain and i don't know how eiserman gets out of
11:32that now because i think that's going to present a real challenge if if we do want to keep it
11:37to
11:37brinket or bring in a big ufa say we put mo in as captain and he's and he's a you
11:43know a norris
11:44caliber defenseman how do you bring someone in cheaper more than that well you do it well you talk to
11:51cider and say look if you want to be the captain of a team that has a chance to make
11:55the playoffs
11:56then you're not going to be the highest paid player on the team i think cider's cider's deals locked in
12:00he is not saying it at this point it's great it's 8.5 million it's the arguably the best deal
12:05in hockey
12:05and is only going to look better in the coming seasons right but you had i don't think hopefully
12:10i don't think stevie would even think like that you have to be able to spend some money to get
12:15guys
12:15well the cap goes up what was the percentage of the cap you were comfortable with that same
12:21percentage is just a higher number now you have costs go up yeah you know i've complained for
12:25years when we get the free agency that he's not willing to pay market prices and now friedman saying
12:29he's not willing to do it well doesn't want to do it with to bring it right it's really a
12:33shame
12:33though because he actually did a marvelous job in positioning yes his salary structure moving into
12:40this new era where the cap's going to go explode i give him credit for that sure that everything was
12:45in place for them to kind of go land a fish yeah to like if larkin was staying that they
12:51could have
12:51possibly jumped into this carlson stuff right yeah i think that's the the shame of all of this is he
12:56waited too long to pounce he wore out the patience of his captain and now rather than being the
13:02destination we're a place people are trying to flee yeah you know kane doesn't want to come back
13:07here larkin wants out and i don't know what no one's asked to bring it or got a quote from
13:11to
13:11bring it but if eiserman's position is i don't want to pay you what you're worth how do you think
13:16that's gonna end 248-539-9797 we'll get to the two grand slam in 10 minutes get some feedback from
13:23you guys and then talk costa lock u.s soccer what went wrong and what's holding us back it's 97
