Should the Red Wings take a similar return as what Ottawa got from Florida?
Transcript
00:00While the Dusty May News big headlines today, other stories are going on, including time
00:07for another Dylan Larkin Trade Center, spelled C-E-N-T-R-E, news aggregate blitz thingy news
00:13desk updates.
00:16Scott, things are afoot in the National Hockey League, and we start with the Brady Kachuk
00:21move from Ottawa to Florida for three first round picks and a second rounder.
00:25Does this set the market when it comes to a Dylan Larkin potential trade?
00:31Would you be happy with a similar return for Larkin?
00:35Hmm.
00:37No, I would not be happy because I don't want just draft capital coming in return, and that's
00:44what this trade is.
00:48And it'd be nice if you can get one of the top picks, but I don't know if Dylan Larkin
00:53is
00:53worth one of the top picks.
00:55Dylan Larkin's worth a lot.
00:56And what I do like about this deal is that it shows that now you've got a template at
01:01least.
01:02Okay, because Brady Kachuk, Dylan Larkin, regardless what fans think of Dylan Larkin here and what
01:08they might think of Brady Kachuk, they're different players.
01:11And Larkin provides more to your team than what Kachuk would necessarily.
01:16Kachuk is a big bruising force, and he's great, but he doesn't play a defensive side of hockey
01:22like Dylan does.
01:23And Dylan's very good offensively too.
01:26So looking at everything Dylan provides, I feel like you're going to get more than what
01:30Brady Kachuk just got.
01:31So if you're Steve Eisenman, you're sitting back and you're probably pretty happy about
01:34this deal, because now you're like, all right, so that's what Brady's just going for.
01:38So you got to step it up.
01:39Yeah, look, I mean, would I be happy with a similar return?
01:43Actually, in theory, I would, okay, in a similar return, but probably a little bit more because
01:49Dylan Larkin's under contract for a longer time than Brady Kachuk is.
01:52So you're getting him at a reasonable price for a longer period of time.
01:55And remember, two of those first round picks are this year, nine and 25.
02:01Now, can Detroit find a way to get two first round picks?
02:06Here's the problem, though, with Eisenman running this is that this is a trade for the future,
02:12not for the now.
02:13Like, this is a haul that you really could turn things around, but there's no immediate
02:19dividend for Steve Eisenman.
02:22There is a roundabout way to get to it on, and we'll get to that later, but there's no
02:26immediate dividend coming back where you can sell, hey, we got this great young player or
02:30great young players, and he's already an embattled GM.
02:33The other thing that we just have to question is, are these picks really that valuable in the
02:38hands of Steve Eisenman, given how he has drafted?
02:41The drafts have been, especially of late, have been, eh, and maybe those dividends will
02:46prove down the road that he drafted really well, but I would say a similar return might
02:52be the best kind of trade offer he gets, in which case he needs to make the best trade
02:57for the Red Wings, not the best trade for his job security.
03:00Yeah, and I thought it was watching, I guess we'll get into a little bit later, what could
03:05happen here, but I do like that this has already happened, because I think it sets Red Wings
03:10up for greener pastures than what Ottawa got.
03:15All right, next up, could we get a situation where talks stall?
03:20Nobody comes to the table to meet Steve Eisenman's asking price, and we kind of reach an impasse,
03:25and Larkin is stuck here.
03:27Well, Chris Osgood and John Keating, their podcast, this topic came up, and Keats asked
03:33Ozzy, could it play out this way, that Larkin actually stays in Detroit?
03:38All right.
04:00Yeah, and the next one too, the Frank Cerebelli.
04:56All right, so that's Ozzy.
04:57Ozzy knows better than we do whether or not a guy could go back to that locker room.
05:01I tend to think that this is a real possibility in spite of what Ozzy said.
05:06Ozzy, again, he probably knows better, but I don't think Eisenman's going to cave to some deal that isn't a
05:14home run.
05:14I think he's going to shop and shop hard to find a home run deal, and if he doesn't, he
05:20can just say to Dylan,
05:22look, man, nobody's giving us what you're worth, and we're going to have to find a way to make this
05:28work until a tradeoff.
05:30I'll keep trying to trade you.
05:31In the meantime, you're a Red Wing.
05:32Yeah, I think there's a very small possibility, a very small percentage that Dylan Larkin starts the season with the
05:39Red Wings.
05:40I think that it's interesting when you look at this perspective from the former players route with Chris Osgood,
05:47and he's talking about it's tough to come out there and the way the crowd's going to react and all
05:53that.
05:53What about how the room is going to react?
05:55Dylan Larkin asked for the trade.
05:57He wants out, and some players will look at that and say, he's bailing on us.
06:04As this has gone on for a couple weeks now, I feel like it has to happen.
06:09They have to move him because I don't think his team wants him back at this point.
06:13If this guy's asking to get out, it's like he's leaving what he deems to be a tough situation, or
06:19is he leaving?
06:20We don't know what the reasons are that he's leaving, but if he's leaving because he's tired of the losing
06:24for 10 years and all that,
06:26okay, well, these other guys are still committed here for contracts, and they're going to have to deal with the
06:30mess that he's leaving,
06:32which is, I don't think that's going to bode well for Dylan Larkin either way.
06:35It's kind of a no-win situation for Larkin, in terms of Detroit anyway.
06:40Once he goes wherever he wants to go, he's going to be happy, but his time as a Red Wing
06:45is completely marred.
06:46Next up, a couple of notes from the Kevin Carrius show out of Edmonton, NHL insider Frank Ceravelli,
06:53who's with Sportsnet, Valley Sports Broadcast, and the Daily Faceoff.
06:57He had the following to say about young restricted free agent Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars
07:02and what kind of contract his camp is hoping he will get.
07:22What is that?
07:24I don't see that.
07:26I don't see that.
07:27I don't see that.
07:28I don't see that.
07:30I don't see that.
07:31I don't see that.
07:32Yeah, it's not hard to argue, but they'd like to be out of line.
07:5514 million.
07:57If you trade Larkin, you're freeing up eight-whatever million.
08:02You've got other cap space.
08:03You might be relying on some younger players.
08:06Would you want the Red Wings to get involved with young Jason Robertson,
08:09who had 45 goals last year, at 14 million?
08:1514 seems steep, but if that's the price and you get them locked up for seven years
08:23or something like that, it could make sense and it could look like a bargain
08:28halfway through that deal because the cap keeps going up.
08:32He's a hell of a player.
08:33This is a guy who's scored 40 goals or more three times in his career,
08:37including last season.
08:38He had 96 points last year.
08:40He's got a career high of 109 points back in the year, the 22-23 season.
08:45He's a great player.
08:46Local kid, too.
08:47There's reasons that you'd want to get a guy like Jason Robertson.
08:52He's a superstar player.
08:53He's one of the – he's like that second tier behind your McDavid's and Drysadles.
08:59He's in that second tier of players.
09:00He's really, really good.
09:01He'd be an upgrade over Dylan Larkin.
09:03You've got to pay for that if that's what you want to pay.
09:05But it's a restricted free agent contract you've got to do.
09:08So you're still sending something the other way and you're paying them the money.
09:12That's the tough part is what do you have to send to make it happen?
09:15If they do make a trade like the Brady Kachuk trade for just a truckload of draft picks, high draft
09:22picks,
09:23I feel like this kind of move is required.
09:25You also then have to do this.
09:27You have to go sign this restricted free agent deal with Jason Robertson.
09:31And finally, from NHL rumor report, Bruce Garriot of the Ottawa Citizens said regarding the Brady Kachuk trade,
09:39a league executive told the Ottawa Citizen on Sunday night that they expect the Senators to use some of those
09:44assets
09:45they acquired in the trade with the Panthers to get another top six forward.
09:49Okay, does Larkin go to Ottawa for all those draft picks?
09:53No, because I think it's like exile.
09:56I don't think Dylan Larkin wants anything to do with Ottawa, and I would understand why.
10:02He's got his no trade clause.
10:05He's got his list of teams he wants to go to, and I would imagine Ottawa is nowhere near that
10:11list.
10:11If he has to expand the list, it's still nowhere near that list.
10:15I think where it'd be interesting, Will Burchill brought this up last night in SportsWorks.
10:21Is it still possible that he could go to Florida?
10:25Now, Florida has like $7 million in cap space, so they would have to send players coming our way,
10:30which is what the Red Wings would want anyway, what we're talking about.
10:33The thought was that the Panthers did not want to give up Anton Lundell,
10:37who's one of the young Senators that they have on the team.
10:40They did not want to give him up in the Brady Kachuk deal.
10:42Well, Kachuk's a forward, he's not a center.
10:45Dylan Larkin is a center.
10:46Dylan Larkin's an upgrade over Anton Lundell.
10:49Could the deal be made there where you get Lundell and a couple of prospects?
10:53And Will had mentioned a couple of those prospects' names.
10:56Jack Devine, who's a forward, who played in the AHL last year at 43 points in 63 games,
11:01but played four years at Denver and got better and better every year he was at University of Denver,
11:05including a 57-point season his senior year there.
11:08And the other player is Merrick Alsher, who's a defenseman, who's got some good size.
11:14He's a Czech player.
11:15He's 6'3", 205 pounds.
11:18And see if you like this scouting report on Merrick Alsher.
11:21Defensively sound and robust, Alsher brings the skills one expects from a 6'3 defenseman.
11:26He hits, clears the front of the net, and suffocates the opposition with a tight off-puck gap.
11:32Details like heel pushes instead of crossovers, keeping a stick on the inside, and angling attackers on the boards.
11:39Manage risk life, a pro-level defender.
11:42Sounds like a can't-miss guy.
11:44Both of those players had a handful of games they got to play in the NHL this past season.
11:49They're both ready to play in the NHL.
11:51And if you get Lundell as well, it'd be an interesting haul of players in return if you could swing
11:58it.
11:58There you go.
11:59That is the latest from the Dylan Larkin Trade Center News Aggregate Blitz Thingy News Desk Update.
