A large fire inside a Turnpike tunnel shut the road down for hours and all of today's headlines.
Transcript
00:01Traffic is moving again on the Pennsylvania Turnpike after an overnight fire forced the closure of the Allegheny Tunnel.
00:07NewsRadio Kitty Case, Tamira Rush is following this story and in the newsroom with details.
00:10David, what began as a routine trip quickly turned into a long night for dozens of motorists.
00:16A fire reported inside the Allegheny Tunnel around 9.30 Thursday night shut down the turnpike between New Stanton and
00:22Breezewood.
00:23About 150 people in nearly 80 vehicles were evacuated and taken by bus to a maintenance building while emergency crews
00:30responded.
00:31Drivers returned to their vehicles around 2.45 Friday morning and the roadway reopened just before 3.30.
00:37The westbound tunnel remains closed for inspection with both directions of traffic using the eastbound tunnel as the investigation continues.
00:45In the newsroom, Tamira Rush News Radio, KDKA.
00:48After more than 18 hours inside the chamber, Senate Republicans passed a $70 billion immigration enforcement bill after weeks of
00:55delays.
00:56Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski joined Democrats in voting against the bill, not included in this package,
01:02much to Democrats' dismay or limits or a ban for President Trump's so-called anti-weaponization fund,
01:07which has received criticism from both sides of the aisle.
01:10Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted the decision on the floor shortly before the final vote.
01:15After tonight's vote, it's clear to Americans that Republicans refused to outlaw Donald Trump's $2 billion slush fund.
01:24Now the whole country can see the truth.
01:27Republicans fought like hell to please Donald Trump and his slush fund,
01:31but didn't lift a finger to help working Americans lower their costs.
01:36No more verbal warnings.
01:38Paul Miller's law goes into effect today here in Pennsylvania,
01:41which means starting today, police in Pennsylvania can officially issue $50 fines to drivers caught using a handheld cell phone
01:48or interactive mobile device.
01:49On the Big K Morning Show, driving expert Jim Clare says this law is a step in the right direction,
01:54but it doesn't go far enough.
01:56Carnegie Mellon, a couple of years ago, did a study using all three systems,
02:00hands-free, handheld, and in sync system also.
02:03They wired, they put people in vehicles, they drove, they wired their brains all up,
02:07they put them through driving courses.
02:09All three systems fared the same way in diminishing decision-making power with your brain.
02:14So it's a step in the right direction, I think, but I think we can go a little further, too.
02:18The ban applies while moving and when temporarily stopped, did red lights, stop signs, or in gridlock traffic.
02:24The attempt to reopen a scenic road that winds through Shenley Park appears to remain blocked.
02:29With that, NewsRadio KDK's Paul Alexander.
02:31Servanty Road used to provide a quick throughway in your car to Oakland before it was closed years ago.
02:36While some people want to see it reopen, others say they prefer it to be left as a pedestrian and
02:40cycling trail.
02:41They say the road now allows people to enjoy the park without dodging speeding cars.
02:45The public response has been strongly in favor of keeping the road as is.
02:49There were 129 signatures for the pedestrians and cyclists,
02:53while only 38 signed a petition to reopen the road to cars.
02:56One city council member said she received 50 emails for the no-vehicular traffic
03:01to just four wanting to see the roadway reopened.
03:04Councilwoman Erica Strasburger summed it up by saying,
03:06this is a decision that has already been made.

03:12It's a mystery of the missing Lego sets in Oregon.
03:15ABC's Andrea Fuji has that story.
03:18A YouTuber has gone viral trying to help a family find their valuable Lego collection
03:24after they claim it was stolen.
03:26Family reached out to me saying that I'm their last hope to get them their life savings back.
03:31Ben Schneider, known as RecklessBen on YouTube,
03:34began investigating Brian Mansell's claim about his $200,000 Star Wars Lego set.
03:40He says he had a deal with a Bricks and Minifigs resale franchise in Oregon to sell the Legos.
03:46The company says the previous franchisee of the store in Salem, Oregon,
03:50entered into a consignment agreement with Mansell to sell the collection.
03:53Bricks and Minifigs say the kind of agreement is barred by the franchising agreement.
03:57The company says it appears that much of the collection has actually been sold
04:00and that the previous franchisee may have underreported sales of the set to the Mansell family.
04:06KDK Sports' Ryan O'Hearn drove in three runs and Jared Jones pitched five scoreless
04:10in the Pirates' 5-1 win over the Astros.
04:13And a top official for the upcoming L.A. Games is not backing down
04:16despite facing calls for resignation.
04:18Correspondent Gethin Kulbar reports.
04:19Casey Wasserman says he hasn't considered resigning as chairman of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
04:26despite Mayor Karen Bass urging him to quit.
04:29Wasserman has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Jeffrey Epstein,
04:33but documents revealed he exchanged emails with Ghislaine Maxwell in 2003.
04:39Wasserman has previously said he regrets the correspondence,
04:42which occurred long before Maxwell's crimes came to light.
04:46L.A. 28 is fully backing Wasserman.
04:49He says he's in frequent contact with Bass about the L.A. Olympics.
04:53I'm Gethin Kulbar.
