Exam Day Turns Into Nightmare: Drain Cover Collapses, B.Ed Aspirants Fall Into Sewer in Kanpur

Several candidates appearing for the B.Ed entrance examination were injured after a drain cover suddenly collapsed beneath them outside a photocopy shop in Kanpur's Colonelganj area on Saturday.

According to eyewitnesses, more than two dozen candidates had gathered outside the shop to get their documents photocopied and complete last-minute preparations before the examination. The students were standing on a stone slab covering a drain when it suddenly gave way.

As the slab collapsed, several candidates fell into the drain, triggering panic among those present at the spot.

Local residents, shopkeepers and bystanders immediately rushed to help and pulled the students out of the drain. Several candidates sustained injuries in the incident, although the exact number of injured students was not immediately known.

Videos from the scene showed chaotic moments as people carried out rescue efforts and assisted the injured candidates.

The incident occurred in the Colonelganj police station area, where a large number of aspirants had assembled ahead of the B.Ed entrance examination.

Police and local authorities were informed about the incident and further details regarding the condition of the injured students are awaited.

The incident has raised serious concerns over civic infrastructure and public safety arrangements, especially in areas that witness large crowds during competitive examinations and other public events.
