A court in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for throwing acid on her husband's face and eyes, leaving him permanently blind. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1.75 lakh on the convict.

Additional District Judge Gopal delivered the verdict on Monday, holding Kahkashan guilty in the case. The judgment came after more than a year of legal proceedings and 10 court hearings.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on March 7, 2025, in the Sadar Kotwali area. Muzaffar Ali allegedly discovered his wife, Kahkashan, with her alleged lover at their home earlier that day. Following an argument, Muzaffar went to sleep at night.

Prosecutors told the court that while he was asleep, Kahkashan allegedly threw acid on his face and eyes. The attack caused severe burns to his face, shoulder and stomach, and resulted in the loss of vision in both eyes.

Muzaffar was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where he underwent treatment for nearly six months. Despite prolonged medical care, doctors were unable to restore his eyesight.

Special Public Prosecutor Narendra Kumar Yadav informed the court that a day before the acid attack, Kahkashan had allegedly attempted to poison her husband by mixing poison in his food. He further alleged that some relatives had supported her in that act, although no separate FIR was registered in connection with the allegation.

Following the verdict, Kahkashan broke down in court. Police took her into custody immediately after sentencing and sent her to jail. During the proceedings, she reportedly kept her face covered with a dupatta.

Muzaffar Ali also attended the hearing along with his mother. Due to injuries sustained in the acid attack, he covered his face with a towel during the court proceedings.

According to case records, Kahkashan, 30, a resident of Bijnor district, married Muzaffar Ali, 35, in a love marriage in 2019. The couple has two children — a five-year-old daughter and a two-and-a-half-year-old son.

The prosecution alleged that Muzaffar had repeatedly objected to his wife's alleged relationship with another man living near their residence, leading to tensions within the family.

Kahkashan's counsel, advocate Pinky Sharma, said the defence was dissatisfied with the verdict and would challenge it before a higher court. The defence questioned the delay in the registration of the case and claimed that Kahkashan had been unfairly targeted because of her love marriage. The lawyer also alleged that the defence was not given sufficient opportunity to present its arguments.

Court records show that Kahkashan's bail application was rejected by the sessions court in June 2025. She was later granted bail by the Allahabad High Court. However, after convicting her, the trial court cancelled her bail and ordered her immediate imprisonment.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the attack, which left the victim permanently blind.
