A shocking video allegedly showing a hotel employee spitting on roti dough before placing it inside a tandoor at a hotel in Mumbai’s Goregaon area has triggered massive outrage on social media and prompted police action.

Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against the accused roti maker, identified as Kausar Ghaffar Sheikh, and the hotel owner, Faiyyaz Ahmad Sheikh. Both have been booked under relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The incident reportedly took place at Fish Koliwada Hotel located in Santosh Nagar, Goregaon East. The video, which began circulating widely on social media on May 27, appears to show the employee allegedly spitting on rotis before baking and serving them to customers. The footage sparked widespread criticism, with many raising concerns over hygiene standards and public health.

According to the complaint filed by 48-year-old Deepak Dattaram Pawar, he had gone out for dinner on the night of May 23, 2026. After finding another hotel crowded, he visited Fish Koliwada Hotel in the area.

Pawar alleged that while inside the hotel, he noticed the employee allegedly spitting on each roti before placing it inside the furnace for baking. Suspicious about the act, he reportedly stood there for some time and secretly recorded the incident on his mobile phone.

He later showed the video to local residents, leading to anger and protests in the area. According to reports, residents informed the police control room on the night of May 25, following which Mumbai Police reached the spot and detained the accused employee for questioning.

During interrogation, the accused was identified as 53-year-old Kausar Ghaffar Sheikh, a resident of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh.

Local residents also accused hotel owner Faiyyaz Ahmad Sheikh of negligence, alleging that such acts pose a serious threat to public health.

Police said an investigation is underway and the authenticity of the viral video is also being verified.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over food safety practices at eateries and the need for strict adherence to hygiene regulations.
