00:00Please, that's the data! Stop!
00:02The driver's making off.
00:04Derbyshire traffic cops.
00:05Pull over in here now!
00:07Might be game on for some of it here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22I just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25The vehicle's stolen.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:35Here you go, here you go.
00:37Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out of here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Please!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59You've flown 128.
01:00Eleven minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Conspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
01:05Do not run!
01:07Smack the officer!
01:09Another problem!
01:10Alright.
01:13Coming up.
01:14How long girls are here?
01:15A minute ago.
01:16Police tech and tactics.
01:18There we are.
01:19Help officers track down wanted suspects.
01:21Get your score on your hands off me.
01:22This is just going to make it quickly.
01:24Come away!
01:26A shocking crime.
01:28Wow, that's horrendous.
01:29Caught on CCTV.
01:31There's black red split open.
01:32Oh gosh, okay.
01:35And...
01:35It's worthless weapons at first.
01:37A tip-off leads to a drone-led manhunt.
01:40That's two people, innit?
01:42For a violent suspect on the run.
01:44Anyone in that tent?
01:45Police officer with a dog.
01:47Oh boy.
02:00Car on the run.
02:03Yeah, now she's putting her seatbelt on.
02:07Every day across Derbyshire, police are on the lookout for wanted suspects.
02:15Quite a lot of waves today.
02:18It's a daily challenge for officers like PC's Jack Pressland and Devon Scarborough,
02:23who use tech and teamwork to catch suspects on the move.
02:27Technology gets 90% of our job.
02:30We've got in-car technology, but also that many cameras out there now.
02:36Passing us hits.
02:40From there to all units, got ANPR hits.
02:44The units can start making their way to the area.
02:45Near Derby, a police camera has located a suspicious car.
02:50Just run this vehicle through Niche.
02:52There's intelligence on the vehicle.
02:54This male's wanted.
02:56Do you want it for?
02:58Stop him.
03:00It hit at seven minutes to three.
03:03You got a picture of it?
03:03Yeah.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Male driving.
03:08It's got an L plate on back.
03:11I don't know where it's likely to go.
03:13Just do some digging on it.
03:17Wanted people are using our road networks daily.
03:20At the end of the day, they need to get about.
03:22They need to still carry on the day-to-day life or the criminality.
03:27Anyway, this gentleman's got felt stop risk.
03:30He's got a few XL bullies.
03:32Whoever has got him in the car is a different matter.
03:35Knowing the details of the person that's wanted is key.
03:39We can get the warning markers, the routes that are likely to go.
03:43It makes it a lot easier for us.
03:47We might have to swap because I can do TPAC.
03:53Devon is new to the team and isn't yet trained for high-speed pursuits.
03:58So Jack takes the wheel.
04:00This gentleman's got felt stop risk.
04:03So by us swapping, it just means that we've got the tactics.
04:06So I can do TPAC resources and tactics and hopefully get stopped quickly.
04:15There's so much on the OEL.
04:18He's been walking past her house shouting abuse her in the street
04:21and following her in his vehicle.
04:23Bit of a nasty bogger.
04:25The quicker we get this person arrested, the less damage you can do.
04:31So it's key that we get him took off the streets immediately.
04:37From Lagerster observations, all units for an AMPR hit the Derby city centre.
04:44What's that? It's just hit.
04:46How long ago was the hit?
04:48The hit was at 15.19, so a minute ago.
04:53The vehicle linked to the wanted suspect has triggered another camera close by.
05:00Technology's massive when we're out of there.
05:03AMPR gives us all the key intel so we can put a plan together.
05:06The 4-0.
05:08Seeing it's pinging quite a lot, we've got units here.
05:10If this vehicle is about to stop, we've got all four heads to pursue, please.
05:14Advanced driver, TPAC trained, high performance, marked vehicle.
05:16Yeah, happy with that.
05:18Are we getting more tactical units making the way to the area?
05:21Oscar Tango, 4-7.
05:23I am fully delivering, high performance vehicle, advanced driver, TPAC trained.
05:28With the risk of a pursuit, traffic cop Andy Swift makes his way to assist.
05:33I'm 4-7. Can I just confirm that it's a black cougar with an L-plate on?
05:38Yes, yes.
05:39We've got a backup of airscore that continues out and we've got to ask if you let mobile
05:43assign that should the occupancy come from the vehicle.
05:47A police helicopter is on standby if the suspect goes on the run.
05:53It's only two minutes away.
05:55Obviously we've got to try and find it yet and it's a bit of a rabbit warren around here
05:57so it could be anywhere.
06:01Where are you?
06:04See if he's gone into retail park.
06:07Five units, including police dog handler PC Andy Shaw, are now searching for the vehicle.
06:13Yeah, 24. I'll keep monitoring.
06:15You look left, I look wrong.
06:18Oscar Tango, 2-3.
06:21Have you tried to have gone far then?
06:23No.
06:25This individual we're tracking, it's a massive game of cat and mask.
06:29What's this here?
06:31No.
06:33Police intel helps officers pinpoint the area where the vehicle regularly travels.
06:39Some wanted people who are experienced are quite savvy with our technology.
06:45They can plan their routes on a day-to-day basis so they don't get caught as quickly.
06:51Jack, did you do all the way down into the car park?
06:53You know, Odeon.
06:56Odeon's the only one I hadn't done, mate.
06:58I very much doubt he's a cinema goer.
06:59I'll double check.
07:02It's all about being determined.
07:04We'll get him.
07:06We'll get him stopped and we'll get him locked up.
07:10Any else to you in? No one.
07:13No one.
07:15Big Liz here parked up.
07:18That's got help by you, sorry.
07:20Dog mobile's got it.
07:23Nearby, dog handler Andy spots the suspect.
07:27There we are.
07:31Hang on, mate.
07:31I think you're all wanted, mate.
07:33You've got to have a sense.
07:33My own defence, if you've not mentioned one question,
07:34something through to late flying course.
07:35Anything you do say, may be given evidence.
07:38Do you have a reason for your arrest?
07:40I haven't done nothing.
07:42You're off to your phone.
07:43Swift mail now.
07:45Yeah, one of the arrests.
07:47Receive.
07:53Hello.
07:54Do you mind grabbing him while I shift my car?
07:56Yeah.
07:57Come on, mate.
07:59I'm just going to search you, mate.
08:03Turn round, mate.
08:04There's an unknown woman with the suspect.
08:08She's the suspect's partner.
08:13Officers want to make sure she's OK.
08:16You don't need to come round here and talk to him.
08:18Yeah, she can talk to me.
08:19Just watch your foot for me.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Did he just punch that window?
08:27Yeah.
08:28Are you pissing me off?
08:29Get your score on your hands.
08:30Got this.
08:30It's just going to be me and you in the back.
08:32You're going to sit in the front, alright?
08:33Pissing me off.
08:34As tensions rise.
08:37Is that your dad?
08:38Yeah.
08:39What are they doing on that?
08:41Stop them.
08:42The suspect's parents arrive.
08:44Hey, what's next?
08:45I'm going there.
08:47I'm going there.
08:47I'm going there.
08:48Go away, mate.
08:50Come away.
08:53Go away now.
08:54You're not speaking to me.
08:55You're under arrest.
08:56Do you want locking up, mate?
08:57Do you really want to lock it up?
08:58Coming on.
08:59Hey, if I can make loads of your work, there's going to be a bit of retribution from this.
09:02Go away.
09:03As tempers flare, a police dog is brought in.
09:10Oh, man.
09:14And a tip-off for a suspect on the run.
09:18Yeah, that's it.
09:19Leads to a remote hideout.
09:21Anyone in that tent?
09:22Police officer with a dog.
09:24Oh, boy.
09:35That's going to be a lovely lot.
09:37After a city-wide search for a violent suspect involving five units.
09:42Did he just punch that window?
09:44Yeah.
09:45Police, tech and intel has helped officers track down the young man who is wanted for an alleged stalking offence.
09:52Are they pissing me off?
09:54With the suspect detained for questioning.
09:57What are they doing on that?
09:58His parents turn up.
10:00What the f*** is?
10:02And want answers.
10:07Go away, mate.
10:09Come away.
10:10Hey, if I can make Logan aware, there's going to be a bit of retribution from this.
10:14Have you stood up?
10:16Oh, man.
10:16Go away, now.
10:17You're not speaking to me.
10:18He's under arrest.
10:19Do you want locking up, mate?
10:20Do you really want to?
10:21I want to know what he's been charged with.
10:22He's not been charged.
10:23He's been arrested.
10:23Go away.
10:25I am pushing you.
10:25Go away.
10:27Good boy.
10:27With the situation escalating, dog handler Andy Shaw fetches Yolo.
10:33His dad was a bit anti-police initially.
10:35I don't know what he's doing or giving him, so I'll move him.
10:38Don't worry, mate.
10:39I've got two of them at home.
10:40I sat down face at all.
10:42Put your rocks back in the van.
10:43In the van.
10:45It's all about remaining calm with them, but we need to show them who's boss.
10:49They're not in charge.
10:50We are.
10:52You can see where you get your temperament from.
10:53I don't.
10:54Yeah.
10:55Aren't supposed to be.
10:57No.
10:58While officers stay behind to keep the suspect's mother in check.
11:02Come on.
11:03I can probably stop.
11:04So I've got this round there, pal.
11:06Jack and Devon bring the man in for questioning about the alleged stalking offence.
11:17So you're on bail already for strangulation?
11:20Non-fait for strangulation, yeah.
11:22As the suspect's booked into custody.
11:25Come on, pal.
11:26Tensions on the estate have calmed and no further threats have been made.
11:33How are you?
11:34How are you?
11:35I'm over here.
11:36You better get me.
11:37Like a bit of a reunion, isn't it?
11:39Never good.
11:40But he wouldn't make it right.
11:42Let's have a bit of circumcised to your resume.
11:44So there's a report that he's been walking past her house three to four times most days,
11:49shouting abuse at her in the street, following her in his vehicle.
11:52So he's been arrested for stalking, for prompting and effective investigation,
11:55and also to protect a vulnerable person.
11:59This individual is a danger, so it's vital that we remove him from our street straight away.
12:05You all right?
12:06I'm all right here.
12:07Hello.
12:08He keeps getting arrested and bailed, so he's a bit angry.
12:12Like this, he's pretty good.
12:13I'd like to see the CCTV comes actually.
12:16That's everything they'll have to follow up.
12:17They have to follow all of it up.
12:19The man will be interviewed and his phone analysed.
12:26The investigating officers will also use CCTV to look into the suspects' movements.
12:32Technology plays a massive part.
12:34It's more difficult for criminals to escape, evade us.
12:38It helps us out so much more than just going on a hunch.
12:42Home sweet home.
12:45You know how it all works, don't you?
12:46Yeah.
12:47Camera's up there, buzzer's there.
12:49If you need help, give him a buzz, yeah?
12:50See you in a bit.
12:58As well as police technology, the public play a vital role in tracking down suspects on the run.
13:14The police receive over 200,000 tip-offs on wanted suspects from the public each year.
13:21Good boy.
13:23And it's often down to officers like Andy Shaw...
13:27Speak.
13:28..and police dog YOLO...
13:32..to respond to new intel.
13:37Do you know when do you want a number? Go ahead.
13:40We'll get on to that shortly.
13:43Mail is up to us showing outstanding wanted.
13:47The police have received a tip-off on the location of a young man wanted for assault.
13:53Yeah, receive.
13:56This chap is wanted for a serious assault involving a bottle.
14:01It switches you on a little bit.
14:02He's willing to use extreme levels of violence towards people.
14:08Andy and YOLO are travelling to a remote location to search for the suspect.
14:13Yeah, receive.
14:14As an update comes through.
14:16He's got a 15-year-old girl in there with him.
14:22He may be in a tent to the child.
14:25I think this child's in his 30s.
14:27There's someone who might be vulnerable, who might need the police's assistance.
14:32We've got a rough description of where he is, but it's a large, wooded area.
14:37There's going to be a lot of guesswork and a lot of searching,
14:40which is obviously when the dog comes in.
14:42And they ask for you at 8.8.
14:44He wants to go to 8.6.
14:47All right.
14:49The job's a bit strange, isn't it?
14:50Yeah.
14:51A local police unit is already on scene to help with the search.
14:55Do you know this chap or not?
14:57I've arrested him before.
14:59He's put on your markers for weapons in the foot.
15:01All right, cool.
15:03Obviously, if he does run, the dog will be coming out, so no-one run after him.
15:09I'll have a wander up with the dog, see what we've got.
15:12Good lad.
15:12Andy and Yolo go ahead to try and pick up a scent.
15:17Go on.
15:19Peter Yolo, obviously, he's a big lad.
15:21He's getting on for 50 kilos of shepherd.
15:23So he's a bit of a handful, but he's good at tracking.
15:26He's got a good nose.
15:28Location is...
15:29A bit further up here to the left.
15:31Go up.
15:34It's a wild goose chase, isn't it?
15:38The officers down at the cars,
15:40on the description of where this chap is, apparently,
15:43it's near some water pipes at the bottom of a cliff.
15:44There is no cliff.
15:45There's just a big hill up here.
15:46Did you see any water pipes or anything on the way in?
15:51It's dark.
15:52It's the early hours of the morning,
15:54and I'm trying to find a man in a tent in, you know,
15:57tens of square miles of rural countryside.
16:00It makes it very difficult.
16:02I'm going to give the informant a call.
16:05Hey, up, it's the police.
16:07I'm out looking for this tent at the moment,
16:09and I believe you know where it is.
16:12I've driven down the trail,
16:14and I'm kind of stood halfway up a hill.
16:17Ah, right, so I've not gone far enough.
16:19I'll find him.
16:21As the cops close in on the location
16:23provided by the member of the public...
16:25I think it is here somewhere.
16:28...they launch the drone to try and pinpoint the suspect
16:31with a heat-sensing camera.
16:33It's a joint effort between the people who have initially called us,
16:36officers on the ground, the dog and the drone.
16:39I've been given loosely here at the bottom of a cliff.
16:43What's that?
16:45Is that a tent?
16:47Sure.
16:49Yeah, that's it.
16:50That's two people, innit?
16:53Are you all right to keep your drone on it in case they get up and run?
16:57I'll take the dog in and look.
16:59He's been violent in the past.
17:02He's known to carry weapons.
17:03If I was on my own, yeah, I'd probably be a little bit more apprehensive.
17:07However, if and when we find someone,
17:09then there's 42 teeth to hopefully make people make the right decisions.
17:14The way he's acting, I'd suggest there's someone bent down here.
17:18Oh, find him.
17:20Oh boy.
17:21There's a cliff here.
17:25I can smell a fire.
17:29Easy, easy.
17:31Easy.
17:32Here we go.
17:34Go!
17:37Kill it, 8A, with the tent.
17:39Anyone in that tent? Police officer with a dog.
17:46Anyone in the tent?
17:49There's every chance they're asleep in there,
17:51or we're contemplating the next move.
17:53Mate, you in there?
17:55Good boy.
17:57Mate, police officer with a dog.
17:59I want you to come out slowly.
18:02Anyone else in there with you?
18:09With the potential of being a child in there,
18:11I don't want to just send a dog to the dog.
18:12I don't want to just send a dog to the dog.
18:12I don't want to do investigate.
18:15Who else is in there with you?
18:19Yeah, if it's just me, please.
18:21Andy calls for backup.
18:23Hey, get out now.
18:32Right.
18:32It's completely fine.
18:34Mate, listen.
18:35Come and sit on the ground there, so I can see you.
18:39Now, hey!
18:43Right, stay there.
18:44Stay there.
18:46Listen, you're not listening.
18:47Sit on the floor.
18:51Mate, hey!
18:53Mate, keep your hands where I can see you.
18:56He keeps reaching into the tent, so I'm reminding him not to do that,
19:00because I don't know what's in there.
19:02I don't know if he's got a load of drugs that he's going to try and swallow.
19:04I don't know if he's got a knife, a bottle, anything else that might harm me or him.
19:09Mate, I'm not doing nothing wrong, I'm doing nothing wrong.
19:11Well, I'm telling you, keep your hands there.
19:13Because I don't know what you've got in there, do you?
19:14Scoot closer to me.
19:16What?
19:17Come closer.
19:19Hey, you are getting close to getting bitten, pal.
19:22For what?
19:23Because you're not doing as you're told.
19:25Right.
19:26In a minute, once my colleagues come,
19:29at the moment my two options are to talk to you or the dog bites you.
19:32Well, I've done nothing wrong then.
19:34Right.
19:35Okay.
19:35I suspect you might be wanted for a crime.
19:38But I don't know who you are yet, so I need to confirm who you are.
19:41So until I can do that, you sit there.
19:46What's up here?
19:48Oi, mate.
19:49Oi.
19:50Right, they said you could take me and take me stuff with me as well.
19:53I'm not letting him go into the tent, because I don't know what's...
19:55Mate, hands!
19:57What's going on?
19:58Just confirm your details, pal.
20:01Just confirm your name.
20:03The officers ID the man,
20:05and confirm he is the wanted suspect.
20:08Time 0428.
20:09You and the rest of the film to appear at all.
20:11Yes, nothing bit may harm the offence.
20:13If you do not mention one question or something,
20:15would you let your landing call?
20:16Anything you do say may be given as well.
20:18I'm happy with the result.
20:20We've got a chap who's wanted for a violent offence,
20:23and this girl's been safeguarded.
20:26All right, so let's get you going.
20:28A local unit will take the girl home,
20:30and notify the safeguarding team.
20:34Oi.
20:35Make sure you look after yourself.
20:37That will be right.
20:38Give it a bit, mate.
20:39She says she's 16.
20:40We believe she's 15.
20:42Either way, she is.
20:43She's young.
20:44So she'll be spoken to now,
20:46and find out what if anything's gone on.
20:500443.
20:50You're further arrested on special possession of a class B substance.
20:54Gentlemen, he's gone off to Ripley custody now.
20:57He'll be booked in and dealt with interviews.
21:00It's a nice feeling knowing he's no longer a threat to the people of Derbyshire.
21:05Yeah.
21:05Good lad.
21:06Good boy.
21:14The use of CCTV cameras, over seven million nationwide,
21:20are often the only way to identify wanted suspects.
21:25PHONE RINGS
21:28PHONE RINGS
21:31PHONE RINGS
21:31PHONE RINGS
21:31Tell me, is that what's happened?
21:33I've just come down David Road in Swaddling Coat
21:36and found an old woman lay on the floor
21:39and all her back her head split open.
21:41Oh, gosh, OK.
21:42She's covered in blood.
21:44About how old is she?
21:46You're probably best speaking to her because I don't know.
21:49She's 70.
21:50She's bleeding heavily.
21:52It's almost like her head.
21:53I think she's dangerous.
21:55There should be some helper there with you shortly, I think.
21:58In South Derbyshire, several units and paramedics are en route
22:02to a seriously injured woman.
22:05So does he say do you know what's happened to her?
22:07I think she's fell off the curb.
22:09She definitely needs medical help.
22:14PHONE RINGS
22:15Coming up...
22:16That is horrendous.
22:18..after a pensioner is left fighting for her life...
22:21Paramedics are describing a whole host of injuries.
22:24..some shocking CCTV leads to a hunt for a hit-and-run driver.
22:30That's some of the worst footage I've ever seen.
22:32..and police cameras...
22:34We're now at speed 120.
22:37..help officers locate a wanted vehicle.
22:39That could be involved in potentially high-value theft.
22:43..carrying an unexpected haul.
22:46Sink boxes.
22:47Sink boxes.
22:50Sink boxes.
22:53Sink boxes.
22:54Sink boxes.
22:55Sink boxes.
22:55Dpemm.
23:00Sink boxes.
23:02Sink boxes.
23:06Hello, mate.
23:07Sink boxes.
23:08I've managed to identify some CCTV's from one of the houses on the street.
23:12Several hours after a 70-year-old woman was found badly injured at the roadside...
23:18Tell me if that's what happened.
23:19I think she fell off the corner.
23:22..she is still in hospital fighting for her life.
23:26Traffic cop Matt Copestate reviews CCTV footage secured from the area.
23:33The initial report that we've had is that she's possibly fallen off the kerb,
23:37but paramedics on scene are describing a whole host of injuries,
23:42potential fractures to her legs, abdominal injuries,
23:45which gets the mind racing and gives you the suspicion
23:49that there's more to it than just a simple fall.
23:53We've got our victim walking into the screen just up here.
23:57As Matt rewinds the footage...
24:02Wow, that's horrendous.
24:04..he uncovers some shocking evidence.
24:13Our victim, she's just stopped at the road here to cross the road,
24:19ready, just waiting for this vehicle to go.
24:22So the victim wouldn't have seen it coming.
24:24It's just shocking footage.
24:27We see a white van enter into the road just as the ladies crossing.
24:35The van is on the wrong side of the road and unfortunately hits the lady full on in the bonnet
24:40and then carries her at least 20, 30 metres into the junction before driving away.
24:50As you can see, she's left on the floor there in the gutter and is not stopped.
24:54Wow.
24:57So she was well within her rights to cross to the central reservation here.
25:01She's just cut the corner and wiped her out.
25:04It's a key bit of evidence.
25:06There's no registration plate displayed, but we know we're looking for a white transit-style van.
25:12That's some of the worst footage I've ever seen.
25:14She didn't stand a chance.
25:16There's no way she could have seen that coming.
25:18As a police officer with nearly 20 years' experience, I've seen a lot of things.
25:25That footage is amongst the worst I've ever seen in my entire career.
25:31To strike somebody like that, I will never forget the noise of that impact.
25:37It gives me the extra motivation to apprehend that person and bring them to justice.
25:43Without a licence plate, Matt needs more evidence to help him find the van and the wanted suspect.
25:51We've also got further footage of two males that stop just after this.
25:58This will be these headlines here.
26:01The 999 call has been made on one of these lads' phones,
26:05and the phone was passed to another male on scene who found this female.
26:12So, at this time, we don't know who this person is.
26:17So we could do with identifying him.
26:36With the victim still fighting for her life in hospital, Matt conducts an area search.
26:44We've identified our vehicle as a white van,
26:47and what will be distinctive about this van,
26:50it's clearly going to have front-end damage from the impact with the pedestrian.
27:00Looking at the map and driving around, the side road where this has happened is a dead end.
27:05So there's only one way in and one way out.
27:08We don't have any footage of this van leaving the area,
27:12so it's got to be in that dead end somewhere.
27:17I conduct a search of the Cordesac, and I find a white Vivaro van.
27:27It's got some extensive dents and damage to the bonnet.
27:32The van looks like it was involved in a crash,
27:35but there is no proof that the damage was caused by the hit-and-run.
27:41The first job is to check the registration plate of the vehicle.
27:47It's a rental van, but it's insured to somebody locally,
27:50but not the address of the driveway that the van is parked on.
27:56The next stage is obviously establishing whose house that is,
28:01and how are they linked to the van.
28:09There's further CCTV in the window of that address.
28:15And the person of that address is allowing a neighbour to park their van on that driveway.
28:27Their CCTV shows a male getting in the van earlier that day and leaving.
28:45Our enquiries take us to the address that this male is staying at,
28:49and we speak to a female at that address,
28:51who confirms that the insured party of this van is a friend of hers.
28:58And he'd been to a funeral that particular day.
29:01She then states that he'd been drinking at one of the local pubs in the area.
29:08CCTV from the pub could help provide further evidence.
29:19So, this has the time at quarter past six in the evening.
29:26And this shows our suspected offending vehicle entering the car park.
29:31The vehicle parks up.
29:35And the person who gets out of that vehicle is who we believe to be the same person from the
29:40earlier footage.
29:45We can identify our man, the bar.
29:48And we've got footage throughout his, just over three hours in the pub,
29:53where he sat at the bar.
29:56And at the end of this, we cut back to the car park.
30:01And we see our suspect again,
30:04is entering that van after spending an evening in that pub.
30:09One of the key pieces of evidence, as I said,
30:12individual leaves the pub car park in the van.
30:14It's clear on the CCTV, there is no damage to the bonnet.
30:18This is only minutes before the collision occurs.
30:23Matt now has enough evidence to arrest the van driver.
30:26It's another aggravating factor in the lead-up to the collision.
30:32Shocking.
30:42A day after the suspected hit-and-run,
30:45the casualty remains in a critical condition.
30:49Yeah.
30:50But there's an unexpected development.
30:54Obviously something's happened yesterday.
30:57The suspect driver arrives at the police station.
31:00So the minute you're under arrest, causing serious injury by a dangerous drive,
31:04and then stop at the scene of a collision, OK?
31:07I felt frustrated that we didn't catch up with him on the evening.
31:11He avoided the police.
31:13He didn't stop.
31:14He ran away.
31:20So we'll take you to the police station, get you interviewed about it.
31:23I came to be completely open anyway.
31:26OK.
31:27Yeah, that's fine.
31:28Obviously you're under caution, so you'll be interviewed about it,
31:31and then you can say your side of the story and interview about what's happened.
31:35People who make off from collisions obviously have something to hide.
31:39I can understand people may panic,
31:42but you have to stop and face up to the consequences of what you've done.
31:46This person has left this woman to die at the side of the road,
31:49and it's unforgivable.
31:52So we'll get the octopus today.
31:55I don't need to handcuff you anything. You're going to be all right, would you?
31:57Yeah.
31:58All right, so we'll jump in the back of the car.
32:00First time ever in the police.
32:01OK.
32:03The only thing he cares about is self-preservation.
32:07He has not given a thought to the state of the person he's just put in hospital
32:12in a life-threatening condition.
32:15The CCTV also reveals one more chilling detail.
32:20So does this lady know what's happened to her?
32:22I think she's fell off the corner.
32:26Police believe the van driver is one of the men heard on the 999 call.
32:32Listening to the 999 call made to the ambulance service suggesting that she's fallen off the curb just to deflect
32:39the blame away from himself.
32:41She definitely needs medical help.
32:44It's just really cold to listen to this.
32:48He's just thinking about himself and his future and how best to avoid being a prosecutor for this.
32:59Coming up.
33:00We're now at speed 120.
33:03A police camera locates a wanted vehicle.
33:06It's got a marker on for being involved in high-value theft.
33:08Carrying a suspicious load.
33:11It's in boxes.
33:13It's in boxes.
33:27It's in boxes.
33:29Go ahead.
33:30Can you run a vehicle through for me please?
33:31What's here?
33:31A camera on the motorway.
33:34With thousands of vehicles linked to crime on the move every day, traffic cops like Andy Swift rely on police
33:42tech and cameras to track them down.
33:45Looks like it's possibly gone in the last half an hour.
33:49It's got a marker on from Kent being involved in high-value theft.
33:53Put a job on.
33:53I can't say we'll stop that.
33:55Lovely.
33:55I will do. Thank you.
33:58Near Chesterfield, Andy's on-board computer has been alerted by a suspect vehicle.
34:03There's been a vehicle that's been sighted that's linked to high-value theft north on the motorway.
34:09So we've got to see if we can spot it.
34:12The main thing for me in regards to pursuit is the great unknown.
34:15The driver is potentially wanted.
34:17So there's a little bit more sort of a state.
34:20They might not want to hang around.
34:21They might do anything in their power to get away from you.
34:25As Andy turns off his blue lights...
34:29Oh, I'm behind it.
34:30..he spots the wanted vehicle on the motorway.
34:33It's just literally the entry.
34:37We've had a confirmed sighting of the vehicle.
34:40Have we got any units in the vicinity to make the way?
34:41.
34:47PC Alex Head is en route to assist.
34:50Yeah, I'll just wait for you to catch up, mate.
34:52Heading up there now.
34:54You never know what people are like you're going to deal with.
34:56You don't know how people are going to react.
34:57You just have to sort of try and get everything in line,
34:59try and get your colleagues with you.
35:02He ain't hanging around, is he?
35:04Hey, Tango Fusto.
35:05That vehicle's up to 110 mile an hour.
35:08Lane 3.
35:09M1 northbound.
35:10We're now...
35:12Speed...
35:13120.
35:15Fully liveryed.
35:16High performance vehicle.
35:17Advanced driver.
35:17TPAC train.
35:18Can you just make M pass away as well, please?
35:21The vehicle is travelling at 120 miles per hour.
35:25Yeah.
35:25Have you attempted to put a stop in on it?
35:27No negative.
35:29Yeah, guys.
35:29So far.
35:31He's just trying to stop.
35:34Vehicle brakes are now down to 70.
35:36I don't know whether he's braking because of me,
35:38or he's braking because of the gantries.
35:41P&D check.
35:42Link.
35:43Truck effect deserves.
35:44Dealing truck.
35:45Spong the vehicle.
35:47Yeah.
35:48Anyway, vehicle increase your speed.
35:49We're now speed 100.
35:500, 0.
35:51And accelerating lane 4.
35:54Alex, it's going to come down to one lane, mate.
35:57It's got 600-yard marker board.
35:59It's blocked by other traffic.
36:01And they'll try and take it off somewhere.
36:02Both units are now behind the wanted vehicle.
36:06I've just entered the signal lane.
36:13Massively getting right up behind the car transporter in front
36:16and they're heavily braking.
36:17It's a very strange behaviour.
36:20It's like he wants to go into the closure.
36:25He must know it's a police car.
36:29The road works have gone.
36:30The vehicle is committed, committed.
36:33The speed is currently 9-0.
36:37There's at least two people in the vehicle.
36:39Because there's been cigarettes thrown from both the near side
36:41and the off side.
36:42Is that for compliance?
36:43Is that going to be next?
36:45No worries, mate.
36:47Approaching a service station, Andy holds the traffic back
36:50while Alex moves ahead to direct the vehicle off the motorway.
37:10Yes, yes.
37:12Yeah, that's received. Thank you.
37:17The vehicle's stopped.
37:19What do you mean, how come you got pulled?
37:21Why do you think you got pulled?
37:23Have you seen your speed on the motorway?
37:27Because I've been behind you for about three junctions.
37:29And at one point we were at 120 miles an hour.
37:33Why are you going 120 miles an hour and driving like an idiot?
37:45Can you talk?
37:47Because you seem not to be able to.
37:50Come and step out anyway.
37:51Is it your car?
37:53Whose is it?
37:54Have you got insurance to drive it?
37:56Yeah.
37:56What, on your own policy or what?
37:58Yeah.
37:58Lovely.
37:58Also, you're both a pair of litter bugs.
38:01Chucking cigarettes out of motorway, aren't you?
38:03I watched you.
38:05Disgraceful individuals.
38:06Get in the back of my car.
38:10There's a suspicion of that vehicle since it's been involved in potentially high-value theft,
38:15OK?
38:15So right now we're going to just be searching that vehicle.
38:18All right.
38:18Is there anything in the vehicle that I need to be aware of?
38:20No?
38:21No, no, no.
38:21No.
38:23I feel like there's a little green stop safe, all right?
38:27While Alex searches the car.
38:29Is there anything in this car yours?
38:33Andy deals with the driver.
38:35Have you got any idea on your driver's licence or anything?
38:38Uh, yes.
38:40Does your uncle know you've got his car, I assume?
38:42Yeah.
38:42The young driver says the car, which is linked to theft and drug dealing, is his uncle's.
38:48Your driver's atrocious, mate.
38:49At one point you're going like 80 mile an hour, then you're doing 120, then you're down
38:53to 70.
38:54It's all overshot.
39:00This is more important than Snapchat.
39:02No, I'm just letting everyone know.
39:05Will I get prints for?
39:07Uh, mate, the amount of speed you're going in, you'll get banned from driving, most likely.
39:10Most likely, I'll get disqualified.
39:12So, obviously, I've been behind your recording for about six miles.
39:14So it's a straight ban?
39:16Well, you're going 120 mile an hour at one point.
39:19And obviously you can't, if anything...
39:20So there's no way I could do, like, a course as well?
39:22Not at that speed.
39:24No, no.
39:24Anything over 96 mile an hour on a motorway is an instant ban.
39:27And how long's a ban till?
39:29It depends.
39:30It's up to their discretion at court.
39:42I've seen boxes.
39:44Sorry?
39:44I've seen boxes.
39:47Cigarettes.
39:49Why have you got that many cigarettes?
39:51Well, no.
39:52I'm going to my uncle's house, so...
39:54Your uncle's house?
39:56With that many cigarettes?
39:57Yeah.
39:59There's none of the cancer aware stickers or anything like that on these.
40:03So, I don't think these are legitimate for UK sales.
40:07Somebody's selling illegal cigarettes.
40:11Where have you purchased them?
40:13Supple.
40:14What, like, in the UK?
40:15Yeah, in the UK.
40:17Why would you carry cigarettes?
40:19No, because I'm...
40:20In plastic bin liners.
40:22I'd just say seize them.
40:23Let the trading standards sort it out.
40:25We're going to seize all the cigarettes, mate.
40:26I'll take them off you.
40:27Alright?
40:27I don't think you've paid duty on them.
40:29I don't think they're legit.
40:30We'll give you our details.
40:31We'll seize them.
40:32And if you can prove where you've had them from legitimately in the UK,
40:34and paid tax on them,
40:35you can have them back.
40:36Alright?
40:38We'll have a seat in your car.
40:44106 per sleeve.
40:46And there's 50 sleeves per box.
40:48We're talking...
40:5030,000 cigarettes.
40:53And I somehow doubt they've paid value-added tax at 20%.
40:57The cigarettes could have a retail value of up to 15,000 pounds.
41:03I'll belt them in.
41:06We'll give you the instant number.
41:07If you can prove they're legitimate,
41:09then by all means you can have them back.
41:11Selling illegal cigarettes can result in an unlimited fine
41:15and a prison sentence.
41:17You'll be dealt with for the speeding by us.
41:20Yeah, his driving wasn't brilliant.
41:21His speed's well in excess,
41:22then back down, then back up.
41:24He's either incredibly inattentive
41:26about seeing what's around him.
41:27To not see my vehicle.
41:29Well, he just doesn't really know what he's doing.
41:31All good.
41:31Slow down, mate.
41:33Your driving's atrocious.
41:34It'll be someone's to court
41:35where he'll have to obviously answer for it.
41:37His speed and his manner of driving
41:38will produce the footage out of there,
41:40which is pretty damning,
41:41and then he'll obviously have to face the consequence,
41:43which is most likely to be a ban.
41:49There are over 18,000 police cameras across the UK
41:53that record over 90 million number plate readings each day.
41:59You never know what that person's capable of,
42:02why they're running away, what they've done.
42:04So you just want to find where they are.
42:06Sometimes you've just got to use the power of modern technology.
42:10CCTV, body-worn, ANPR cameras,
42:14it provides the evidence that we need.
42:16It's a great tool to have.
42:20We rely on a constant flow of intelligence,
42:24but some good old coppers now can also uncover these people.
42:32In this episode...
42:34Are you pissing me off?
42:35Get your scrawling out.
42:36Well, this is just going to make it one...
42:37Does it just punch that window?
42:39Yeah.
42:40Following the arrest of the man wanted in connection
42:42with the alleged stalking offences...
42:44So you're on bail already for strangulation?
42:47On bail for strangulation, yeah.
42:49The suspect was interviewed by police.
42:51This is ridiculous.
42:53He was released without charge.
42:57Home sweet home.
43:01Reports of a chap in a tent.
43:04There's a 15-year-old girl in there with him.
43:06The suspect who was wanted for failing to appear in court...
43:09Good boy.
43:10...who was found camping with a young girl...
43:13Hey, I'm not doing nothing wrong.
43:15...was found guilty of grievous bodily harm without intent.
43:20He was sentenced to 12 months in prison...
43:23...and received a restraining order for three years.
43:35Well, that's horrendous.
43:37After a hit-and-run that left a woman fighting for her life...
43:41She's from the blood.
43:42The back of her head split open.
43:44The driver pleaded guilty to causing serious injury...
43:47...through dangerous drugs.
43:48So the minute you're under arrest.
43:50He was sentenced to two years in prison...
43:52...suspended for 18 months...
43:54...and disqualified from driving for two years...
43:56...and was required to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
44:00The victim suffered 15 serious injuries...
44:03...including fractured legs, arms and hips...
44:06...and a punctured lung.
44:08She's been discharged from hospital...
44:10...and is being cared for by her daughter.
44:16And the driver caught speeding at 120 miles an hour...
44:20This is more important than Snapchat.
44:22...received four points on his licence...
