00:00:04I
00:00:32Police emergency.
00:00:33I've been shot.
00:00:34You've been shot?
00:00:36Yeah, someone's just shot my own door.
00:00:38Where have you been shot?
00:00:41In the side.
00:00:42In the side.
00:00:44No.
00:00:45Keep talking to me.
00:00:47I'm trying to get some help to you.
00:00:50I'm trying to get some help to come to you to help you, okay?
00:00:54I'm trying to get some help to come to you to help you, okay?
00:00:55Please, please.
00:00:58Can you hear me?
00:01:01Can you hear me?
00:01:06Seconds.
00:01:07That's all it takes for a brutal crime to be committed.
00:01:14My dad's found his daughter on the floor in an absolute pool of blood.
00:01:18But no suspect disappears without a trace.
00:01:22One here.
00:01:22One here.
00:01:23A clue.
00:01:25A fragment.
00:01:26Something is always left behind.
00:01:28It's just finding that inevitable mistake and making the most of it.
00:01:31Do you know anyone who would want to shoot you?
00:01:34In the West Midlands, the major crime team follows every lead.
00:01:39You can see the holes in the curtains just as the bullets have come through, and then
00:01:44we've got the damage in the coving.
00:01:47Specialist detectives trained to spot the most subtle of clues.
00:01:50It can be little things.
00:01:52You see what they were wearing, what kind of haircut they had on that day.
00:01:56Piecing together the truth.
00:01:59Ooh, that's a good one.
00:02:01And never giving up.
00:02:03Oh, please, show me your hands now!
00:02:04Show me your hands!
00:02:05Until those responsible are brought to justice.
00:02:10We've got to be there, dealing with it quickly.
00:02:16Our response will be as robust as the offence itself.
00:02:42There's two bullet holes through the windows, and possibly more inside.
00:02:47They found a bullet fragment inside the house.
00:02:50One fragment.
00:02:51One fragment.
00:02:53In Dudley, a quiet suburban street has become the centre of a shocking and violent major crime
00:02:59investigation.
00:03:01All we really know is, at about 22 minutes past midnight last night, a call came in from
00:03:08a lady who'd been in a house with her three children.
00:03:11Two bullets had come through the window, and one of them had struck her in the leg.
00:03:15She was then taken straight to hospital, and the scene was preserved overnight.
00:03:21DS Lucy Mooney and DC Charlotte Smith are first to arrive at the scene.
00:03:26One in the door and two in the window.
00:03:30Something else, is it?
00:03:32That'd be the one that's caught the lady in the hip.
00:03:35Presumably she's stood right on the other side.
00:03:37I mean, that makes me think as well.
00:03:39Did I knock the door, and she's gone to answer it?
00:03:43I'd say at least 90% of our jobs have firearms involved in them, in one way, shape, or form.
00:03:49Hello.
00:03:51But what makes this case different is that we've got a victim, a 30-year-old mother, and
00:03:58she was in her own home, where she should feel safe with her children, and she was shot.
00:04:05And she survived by luck.
00:04:07Yeah, it's gone right into the top there.
00:04:11Oh, yeah.
00:04:13It's hit the wall and potentially bounced into the floor.
00:04:15I was going to say, where was the other one?
00:04:17It's literally in the middle of the...
00:04:18That's the, um...
00:04:21Well, that's not even the case, is it?
00:04:22Is it?
00:04:23That's the bullet.
00:04:24That's the actual bullet.
00:04:25Yeah, that's the actual bullet.
00:04:27So, you can see the holes in the curtains just about as well as the bullets have come through.
00:04:33And then we've got one quite obvious marking the wall there.
00:04:39And then the, um, searching officers have removed that piece of coving, so they could obviously
00:04:44see the damage in the coving and the bullets being recovered from in there somewhere.
00:04:50They've got to have been on foot, ain't they?
00:04:51They've got to have got out of that car.
00:04:53But then where's the curtains unless it was a revolver?
00:04:55But if it's a revolver, you've shot once, you've then got to move the...
00:04:58...tru again to get the sign placed.
00:05:02Yeah, but just the angle of it.
00:05:03Yeah, I know what you mean.
00:05:04But then if you've done it on foot, where's the curtains?
00:05:08Unless they've been smart enough to pick them up.
00:05:13Bullet holes and a single fragment are the only evidence detectives have to work with.
00:05:19Somebody's got to have been in the garden.
00:05:20Unless there's two guns.
00:05:21Unless I've done that one first and then done the windows.
00:05:25With no obvious motive for the shooting, Lucy and Charlotte pieced together what happened.
00:05:33So I went and spoke to Dad, and it's a young lady and three children that live inside the property.
00:05:38She's got up in the middle of the night just to go and get herself a cold drink,
00:05:41come down to the front door, and then she's been shot.
00:05:46I mean, Dad's been called by one of the children, gone over and found his daughter on the floor
00:05:51in an absolute pool of blood, and she thought she was dying.
00:05:56He's saying his daughter's got no issue with anybody.
00:05:59She literally just takes the kids to school, and her life revolves around her small children, by the sounds of
00:06:03it.
00:06:06At this time, looking at the victim herself and her family, there's nothing to suggest any reason
00:06:13or any ongoing disputes with anybody that would cause something of this magnitude to happen.
00:06:22Hello.
00:06:23My name's Lucy. I'm from the police.
00:06:25I'm the investigation team that's dealing with the echo.
00:06:28No, what it was, I heard such a bang last night.
00:06:31It'd be a quarter past twelve.
00:06:32Sounded like steel, being knocked or something like that.
00:06:35Okie dokie. Thank you very much for your information.
00:06:40That might assist us.
00:06:42Oh, no, I'd just like to mention anything about access to the city, but it's just...
00:06:44Oh, wow.
00:06:46Yeah, is there any way we can get in to look at the cameras?
00:06:48He's got it all on his phone, and there's no way he can get up here today.
00:06:52Oh, OK.
00:06:54CCTV opposite the victim's house could give detectives a clearer picture of the events that unfolded.
00:07:03Hello.
00:07:03Hello, CCTV.
00:07:05The barber won't be back till tomorrow.
00:07:08We'll just have to press the matter, because we're going to need that for the time.
00:07:12It's like, no.
00:07:14Leading the investigation from Perry Bar Police Station is Detective Inspector Francis Nock.
00:07:19If there's anyone else who can come and just let us in, we can come and collect the keys from
00:07:22him.
00:07:23We can access systems ourselves.
00:07:25We won't take anything.
00:07:26Don't we go.
00:07:26We'll have to try and figure out everything somehow.
00:07:29OK.
00:07:30It's in a bit.
00:07:32The gaffer wants us to get in there, one way or another.
00:07:36CCTV is almost always the major line of inquiry and the most important source of evidence.
00:07:42You know, we're looking for vehicles making off at speed.
00:07:44We're looking for people running away.
00:07:46We're looking for that first starting point as to who is likely to be responsible.
00:07:52Illegal firearms carry a constant risk of injury or death.
00:07:57At any one time, an estimated 1,000 illegal firearms are on the streets of England and Wales.
00:08:05Most of these are smuggled from Eastern Europe across the channel, hidden in vehicles and parcels.
00:08:15Some start as legal blank firing guns, bought online for less than a hundred pounds and converted into lethal weapons.
00:08:27A genuine handgun can fetch around 3,000 pounds on the black market.
00:08:32Many offenders dumping them quickly after use.
00:08:35In the last year, almost 250 have been taken off the streets of the West Midlands.
00:08:51While the team wait to see if the barber's shop camera yields any results,
00:08:56lead CCTV coordinator Rosie Downs is reviewing footage uploaded by one of the victim's neighbours.
00:09:02So, it doesn't point at the offence location itself, however, it does capture audio.
00:09:08So, what we hear at 00.15.33 hours is five loud bangs.
00:09:24Followed by an acceleration of a vehicle.
00:09:31The audio of the shots confirms that a discharge happened.
00:09:35So, you couple that CCTV with the ballistics that were found at the address
00:09:39and you can say five shots were fired at the house.
00:09:43That's really important to us.
00:09:45But, at the moment, we don't know who's involved.
00:09:52All we can say about the people who committed this offence is
00:09:55They had access to firearms.
00:09:57So, you would assume that everybody who's involved in this offence is extremely dangerous.
00:10:01You're thinking a million miles an hour about the risks.
00:10:05It's really, really frightening.
00:10:07If you don't get them quick enough, they might try again.
00:10:10But, yeah.
00:10:17So, let's go.
00:10:26I'm going to go.
00:10:33We don't get them.
00:10:37I'm going to go.
00:10:4914 hours ago, a young mother of three was shot through her front door in a brutal drive-by
00:10:54shooting on a suburban street in Dudley. Detectives have no suspects, and there's an
00:11:01update on the victim, who remains in hospital with a gunshot wound.
00:11:25What it's all about is unclear at this point in time, but the shooting of a woman in the
00:11:31middle of the night behind her own front door is an exceptionally serious incident.
00:11:35It's a real tough starting point, because we don't know whether we've got people on foot.
00:11:38We don't know if there's more than one vehicle, so that all needs to come together from a really
00:11:43determined investigation in the locality really, really quickly.
00:11:51They've got a massive dog as well, I'll tell you this for now.
00:11:54He's ferocious.
00:11:56Hunting down the footage detectives hope will capture the vehicle on camera is PC Gurpreet Singh.
00:12:01When we start looking at CCTV, the dream is you get footage of it happening, and you start
00:12:08tracking it forwards and tracking it back, and you get your answers.
00:12:19First days of investigations, you're dealing with people not being in, or people not wanting
00:12:26to talk to you, or gaps in your CCTV, struggling with getting you track, and it can be really,
00:12:32really frustrating, especially when the motive at the current time is still unknown.
00:12:38If I were to send you like a link with some timings, just like a five minutes clip,
00:12:45would you be able to check it, and if there is anything, would you be able to send it to
00:12:48us?
00:12:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:12:57I think I've got zero.
00:13:00I think this is our file.
00:13:02Back at the office, a file PC Singh has shared has caught the attention of CCTV lead, Rosie Downs.
00:13:10It's just after the bangs and the acceleration of the car, what we've identified is this vehicle
00:13:16coming away, and so the offence location is just up here on the right-hand side.
00:13:34Rosie notices a detail on the car that could make it easier to spot on other cameras.
00:13:40Rosie Downs
00:13:41Importantly, it's got one headlight working, one out.
00:13:45When we track cars on CCTV, a distinguishing feature on a vehicle can massively assist us with
00:13:53that track. There could be hundreds of cars on that area. When one's got a faulty headlight,
00:13:58that narrows your parameters massively.
00:14:05So, five minutes before the offence takes place, we have this vehicle coming down
00:14:12from the direction of Birmingham New Road.
00:14:16With multiple CCTV sightings of the car, Rosie turns to the team responsible for automatic
00:14:22number plate recognition, or ANPR.
00:14:26So, I've sent him through the times, and he's come back with a vehicle, which is hitting ANPR in the
00:14:33local area.
00:14:41It's passenger headlight is out. It's reportedly stolen on the 2nd of July of the day before.
00:14:47So, it definitely looks like it's going to beat the car.
00:14:52The Audi S3 was stolen prior to the shooting. It's been 36 hours since the shots were fired,
00:14:59and the clock is ticking to find CCTV of the theft.
00:15:10People don't tend to use their own cars to commit crime, because they come straight back to them.
00:15:15So, people will steal cars, or use associates' stolen cars to try and essentially conceal their
00:15:22identity from the police. As well as tracking down CCTV of the car theft,
00:15:26the team are under pressure to secure more footage from the street where the shots were fired.
00:15:31So, it's an Audi S3. Front headlight is out.
00:15:43Now, footage from the barbershop overlooking the victim's home has finally come in.
00:15:54Take that back and zoom it in.
00:16:01First flash.
00:16:04Second flash. Third flash.
00:16:08The barbershop footage captures three flashes of light consistent with a muzzle flash from a gun
00:16:15on the passenger side of vehicle one.
00:16:20And then the car speeds off at exactly the same time as we have the audio of the car accelerating
00:16:26away.
00:16:27And therefore, it's given us confidence that we are following the correct vehicle.
00:16:45The barbershop footage.
00:16:46Every week, over 200 cars are stolen from the streets of the West Midlands.
00:16:50For organized criminals, their targets essential to the operation.
00:16:55Moving drugs, carrying weapons, and enabling violent attacks behind clone plates that lead investigators nowhere.
00:17:06When the job's done, a network of chop shops across the region can strip and erase a vehicle within hours.
00:17:12Wiping the evidence before anyone comes looking.
00:17:17But every car leaves a trail.
00:17:20ANPR cameras, forensic evidence, cell site data.
00:17:24And in the West Midlands, that trail is exactly where the investigation begins.
00:17:40Welcome to the briefing for Operation Ice Fox, which an attempted motorbike shooting took place in the early hours of
00:17:45yesterday.
00:17:46It's now 32 hours since a young mother was shot behind her own front door on a suburban street.
00:17:53She remains in hospital with life-changing injuries, and the only lead is a stolen Audi S3.
00:18:00So when you start looking at Audi S3s in the area with the headlines out, PE15 comes up.
00:18:09So last night, we put a PNC4 F marker on, ALB stops only, with a strategy around it for everybody
00:18:14to be arrested.
00:18:15If anyone does come across, it's parked up, then it'll go off, and we'll get in front of the report.
00:18:20With the investigation evolving rapidly, the team's priority is locating the stolen car.
00:18:26This shows the offending vehicle being stolen.
00:18:31Detective Sergeant Lindsay Davenport has just received footage of the theft sent in by the Audi owner's neighbour.
00:18:51You can clearly see it's been light up and has been activated with the kit, rather than someone forcing entry
00:18:57to the vehicle.
00:19:14So we're trying to understand if the vehicle previous owner has kept a key, and if so, if they've got
00:19:23something to do with knowing where that car is now,
00:19:26and either that person or anyone associating with them have stolen this vehicle.
00:19:32At the moment, there's nothing to suggest any link between the registered keeper of the car and anybody else.
00:19:38However, it is a little bit suspicious that somebody appears to just walk down the road, unlock the car, and
00:19:45drive it away.
00:19:48We're keeping an open mind as to how somebody might have another key for that car.
00:19:54After the theft has taken place, we've got the ANPR hit of the last sizing of that vehicle travelling through,
00:20:02and then we've got nothing but we're in this junction itself.
00:20:06The CCTV team continues to track the stolen Audi towards the outskirts of Dudley.
00:20:11That's the most popular route out.
00:20:13It feels strange that he'd be heading out to like Himalayan one-born, albeit,
00:20:17if you've got a place that you're looking to dump the car, and you're in contact with somebody,
00:20:22you leave it in the countryside.
00:20:29When you start moving into more rural areas, you have massive stretches of road that aren't lit very well,
00:20:36less cameras, houses, even if there aren't any, are really far back off the country road,
00:20:42so if they did have cameras, the chances of them catching anything slim to none.
00:20:46With the Audi disappearing into miles of dark country roads, detectives may have lost their only lead in the case.
00:20:54But by rewinding the cameras, they're about to get their first glimpse of a suspect.
00:21:10Eight days ago, an Audi S3 was stolen.
00:21:14By the next night, it's at the centre of a violent attack, as gunmen shoot a young mother in her
00:21:20own home.
00:21:21I've been trapped.
00:21:23Please keep talking to him, eh?
00:21:27Leaving her in hospital with life-changing injuries.
00:21:32Nothing scares the public more than firearms being discharged on the streets.
00:21:36When you see an innocent person injured, and seriously injured as a result,
00:21:40just goes to show the possible consequences of this type of crime.
00:21:43To be fair, it sounds like the car.
00:21:47It's gonna be the car, isn't it?
00:21:48Which way is it going?
00:21:49So, there you go.
00:21:51Led by Detective Inspector Nock, Major Crime Team One are hunting the Audi's trail,
00:21:56piecing together its movements in the deadly aftermath.
00:22:00That's a lot of a perfect run, isn't it?
00:22:01Like there is no scent to anywhere the roads go.
00:22:05Yeah.
00:22:06But the trail runs cold, the Audi seemingly vanishing into the night.
00:22:15She said it hasn't gone here or here, so then we skipped to here, and it didn't pass.
00:22:21As they wait for the Audi to resurface, detectives rewind the clock, retracing its movements before the shooting.
00:22:29So, we got it to Weaver's Rise, which is a car park, not covered by CCTV, and it backs onto
00:22:37a canal.
00:22:3924 hours before the shooting, CCTV captures the Audi entering a car park off Weaver's Rise, around three miles from
00:22:48the scene of the attack.
00:22:49There's no CCTV in the car park, but we can see somebody walking away from it.
00:23:00The figure is believed to be the car thief, but for the next 23 hours, no one is seen entering
00:23:06or leaving the car park.
00:23:11Until 30 minutes before the shooting, when the Audi pulls out.
00:23:20Now the team faces a critical question. How did the driver get back to the car?
00:23:26We'd need to have a look at access points onto Weaver's Rise.
00:23:29Obviously, we noticed the canal, and then we start to look at the canal entrances around that.
00:23:34The theory being that somebody's been dropped off, walked along the canal.
00:23:39Quite quickly, we identified a location covering the next entrance along to the canal towpath.
00:23:47It's here that we identified a vehicle pulling up.
00:23:59Ten minutes before the Audi leaves Weaver's Rise, CCTV captures another car pulling up on the opposite side of the
00:24:07canal.
00:24:14Three people get out. One stays with a vehicle. The other two head across the towpath towards the car park.
00:24:29Whilst it is dark, you do start to see some features on the clothing.
00:24:38And it was from here that we were able to look at local ANPR cameras to see if we can
00:24:43identify what that second vehicle was.
00:24:48That's a big break because we've obviously got a vehicle, a vehicle that didn't want to go into Weaver's Rise,
00:24:53and therefore a vehicle that somebody wants us not to see.
00:24:57So identifying that vehicle is potentially going to give us something which comes back to a suspect.
00:25:05Right, good morning everyone. Welcome to the status briefing for Operation Ice Fox.
00:25:10Pre-offense now. So our Audi basically goes from the theft down to Weaver's Rise,
00:25:16which is where it gets dumped after the theft right here.
00:25:19We're on shooting day.
00:25:21Audi emerges from here at 2339.
00:25:24At 2329, a dark vehicle comes down the road from here, stays there for a couple of minutes here.
00:25:32And then it looks like three people emerge from the vehicle.
00:25:36The passenger walks around and swaps with the driver.
00:25:39The driver and another passenger walk out of the vehicle.
00:25:42One of them puts his hood up and they walk onto the canal side of the path.
00:25:45Ten minutes before our car comes out.
00:25:47So what is it? It's a BMW 330 diesel, M Sport Auto in black, insured to Kyle Straker.
00:25:54He's the policy holder of the insurance and the only known driver on that vehicle since June 2025.
00:26:01The owner of the BMW, Kyle Straker, is no stranger to police.
00:26:06A career criminal with a string of convictions and deep-rooted links to organised crime.
00:26:11Now we can look at Kyle Straker, his background, the intelligence around him,
00:26:16his previous convictions, his telecoms work, his financials.
00:26:21And we can start to do an investigation into Kyle Straker at the same time as we're doing an investigation
00:26:25into the shooting,
00:26:26in the hope that those two will meet.
00:26:29As the prime suspect, Straker needs to be brought in for questioning.
00:26:34But first, the team must find him.
00:26:38This is BMW.
00:26:39He was 12.
00:26:40I think 39.
00:26:42They trace his movements through financial records and telecoms data.
00:26:47Hiya, it's DC Smith calling from West Midlands Police.
00:26:50Financial intelligence can really assist us in an investigation.
00:26:53But just like CCTV, sometimes when you think you're going to get a lot, you might get absolutely nothing at
00:26:59all.
00:26:59So we've got an attempt murder investigation that we're running at the moment.
00:27:04One of our suspects has used the M6 toll.
00:27:07I'm just wondering, if we've got the time, the exact time of the transaction and how much,
00:27:11what information would we be able to get if we sent a data protection form for us?
00:27:16When you're looking into people's financials, it can massively help you house somebody,
00:27:20especially if you've got a number of locations where you think they could be.
00:27:24It can be little things such as earlier in the day, they might have been to a shop.
00:27:28You go to the shop, you get the footage and you see what they were wearing,
00:27:32what kind of haircut they had on that day, things like that.
00:27:37We have come up with a couple of addresses of interest.
00:27:41It just needs a bit more digging as to where those places are in relation to all the APRs
00:27:46and who lives there and what we can link to him, really.
00:27:51The issue we've got with him is he's got a registered address in Wolverhampton.
00:27:55Looking at the ANPR hits of his vehicle and looking at the transactions that he makes,
00:27:58it doesn't look like he lives in Wolverhampton.
00:28:00He looks like he lives more over the Tamworth area.
00:28:03I am a genius.
00:28:07A series of cash transactions link Straker to a woman.
00:28:12Who's that?
00:28:13I'm sorry.
00:28:15Where does she live then?
00:28:20It's a good enough shot.
00:28:22As the net tightens around Straker, there's a breakthrough in the search for the missing Audi.
00:28:29Changing rates.
00:28:31The car, running on dead plates, is flagged on ANPR.
00:28:35We'll get the light out.
00:28:37There we go.
00:28:39Yes, Lynn!
00:28:40Yes!
00:28:43Yes, it's definitely a clone flight.
00:28:46We've got it.
00:28:48We tend to find that where people are changing plates that they've thought through what they're going to be doing
00:28:53and how they're going to try and get away with it afterwards.
00:28:56Ultimately, it's a way to try and throw us off the scent.
00:28:59Now it's been identified, the Audi starts lighting up cameras, 20 miles from the crime scene, on the opposite side
00:29:06of Birmingham.
00:29:08Tamworth!
00:29:09Yeah!
00:29:10As long as they're near the road.
00:29:12What happens now?
00:29:14That's after, so it's a direct journey to Tamworth.
00:29:19CCTV shows both the Audi and Kyle Straker's BMW making the same journey after the shooting.
00:29:34The girls have tracked it to the ANPR camera, so they travel up in convoy up to Tamworth area.
00:29:43There he has.
00:29:46That has the front headlight out.
00:29:51As the team closes in on Kyle Straker, new footage emerges, placing the Audi with its dead plates in a
00:29:58car park less than two hours after the shooting.
00:30:10Quite tall, isn't it?
00:30:15Good clothing there for you.
00:30:17Yeah.
00:30:18It's about marked on the left chest.
00:30:21He's not that young either, is he?
00:30:24Let me just check here in Atkins.
00:30:26I don't think it is.
00:30:29Oh, you know what?
00:30:30I think it is.
00:30:34How weird is that?
00:30:36The driver bears a striking resemblance to Kieran Atkins, a man already known to the police.
00:30:42His number is on Kyle Straker's phone records on the night of the shooting.
00:30:47He's the bloke that he's on the phone to constantly before 10 to 11.
00:30:50We already know that Kyle Straker is involved in this incident.
00:30:55We're looking at his phone contacts throughout the time period and we can see Kieran Atkins' features.
00:31:02Now, we don't know on reading that information alone what exactly Kieran Atkins' involvement in this offence is, if any.
00:31:08All of a sudden we've got Kieran Atkins in our Audi, which is another great break in the investigation.
00:31:15Right, Liz, we need to do some work around him.
00:31:18Excellente!
00:31:20Anticipate we'll raise him as a suspect in the next, hopefully in the next five, six hours.
00:31:34Linking suspects Kieran Atkins and Kyle Straker is a breakthrough for Major Crime Team One.
00:31:40And now, new evidence has emerged that may explain the motive behind the shooting.
00:31:46The case theory is that this is a debt to the responsible OCG manager called Kyle Straker.
00:31:54And this is likely to be a, they're kind of a, you better pay up type of thing.
00:32:00Whether, whether they intended to hit the female target or whether they didn't on this.
00:32:06But the team discover no one in the house is responsible for that debt.
00:32:13Conflicts can start with something small, a petty argument, a falling out, or an unpaid drug debt.
00:32:23Retaliation is often swift, but the information they act on isn't always reliable.
00:32:28Targets are misidentified.
00:32:32Addresses are wrong.
00:32:34The consequences of which can be devastating because violence tied to drugs doesn't stay contained.
00:32:43Across the region, drug supply drives organized gang activity.
00:32:48Often bringing violence, kidnappings, firearms, and ruthless debt enforcement in its wake.
00:32:57And when the violence spills onto residential streets in the West Midlands, it's ordinary families who can end up paying
00:33:04the price.
00:33:10As the investigation gathers pace, Rosie uncovers a crucial piece of CCTV from the night of the shooting, traced back
00:33:18through Straker's financial records.
00:33:22So we had details as a withdrawal of cash in the kind of cosily, sedgelly area, caught to 11 on
00:33:30the evening on the 2nd of July from Carl Straker.
00:33:33So CCTV was recovered from its location.
00:33:38And lo and behold, what we see is the BMW pulling up outside of the post office.
00:33:49The use of Straker's bank card a short time prior to when we see our BMW on CCTV is really
00:33:56useful for a number of reasons.
00:33:57First of all, it gives us a location for the BMW because the CCTV around the cash point, which shows
00:34:03the BMW arrive.
00:34:04Secondly, it gives us a pinpoint and an identification for Straker himself because we see a person on CCTV get
00:34:11out of that vehicle and use his bank card to commit a transaction.
00:34:15So there is a high probability that that is him.
00:34:18The really important thing about this CCTV for us was when he gets out of the car to make the
00:34:23cash withdrawal, he locks the car, suggesting he was the only occupant of the car at that time.
00:34:30Shortly after withdrawing the cash, detectives believe Straker collects his two co-offenders, drives to the canal where two of
00:34:38the men switch from the BMW into the Audi.
00:34:47It's a hot task. We're going to be jacking up as quick as we possibly can. Thanks, Barry. Cheers. Fight.
00:34:53DI Francis Nock has been given the green light to arrest Kyle Straker.
00:34:58BMW 3, 323 diesel, M Sport auto in black, insured to Kyle Straker. He's the policy holder of the insurance
00:35:05and the only name driver.
00:35:06A marker is placed on Straker's BMW.
00:35:10We've got to do that as quickly as possible because the people we've identified are a risk to the victims
00:35:15and they're a risk to the community.
00:35:16The moment his car is picked up by ANPR, armed officers will move in.
00:35:23I'll confirm that now.
00:35:25Once somebody's been identified in an investigation as a suspect, especially in a firearm job, if you don't get them
00:35:32quick enough, they might dispose of evidence.
00:35:35They might hurt somebody else. The priority right now is Kyle Straker.
00:35:41Armed response officers kit up and prepare to intercept Kyle Straker's vehicle.
00:35:48Equipped with carbines, tasers and purpose-built armed response vehicles called ARVs, these specially trained officers operate with precision.
00:35:58The priority right now is to meet you.
00:36:04Shortly before 10pm, Straker's BMW triggers an ANPR camera on the outskirts of Birmingham.
00:36:11Put the blues on please, blues on.
00:36:14OK, ARVs, get in a line then.
00:36:15In a tightly coordinated manoeuvre, four ARVs, supported by a dog unit and aerial surveillance, prepare to strike.
00:36:25Come on.
00:36:31Show me your hands now! Show me your hands!
00:36:58A mother of three has been shot in her home in a brutal attack and is in hospital with life
00:37:04-changing injuries.
00:37:07Now, Major Crime Team 1 has finally tracked down the suspected gunman.
00:37:12We always look for the easiest and most effective way to bring people into custody safely.
00:37:17And for Kyle Straker, that is a strike on his vehicle.
00:37:27Armed response officers are moving in to stop suspect Kyle Straker.
00:37:33OK, ARVs, get in a line then.
00:37:36Come on.
00:37:38Show me your hands now! Show me your hands!
00:37:40Hands! Hands! Hands! Hands!
00:37:44Get your hands up now!
00:37:46Out of here come, out of here come!
00:37:47Unlock the door!
00:37:49Unlock the door!
00:37:55Unlock the door!
00:37:57OK, go home.
00:37:58Put me home.
00:38:02Anyone in the bathroom, Amy?
00:38:04I said there's nobody in the bathroom.
00:38:06Turn your back now.
00:38:09Driver secure.
00:38:09Passes the door!
00:38:11Right, come on.
00:38:12Not slowly.
00:38:16Leave your hand later.
00:38:17Show me your hands.
00:38:18Put your hands.
00:38:19Put your hands.
00:38:20Put your hands.
00:38:20Put your hands.
00:38:20Hands on the top later.
00:38:24The strategy around the vehicle, because of the offence and the involvement of the vehicle,
00:38:28was to arrest all occupants on suspicion of the attempted murder.
00:38:32There was a passenger in the vehicle when it was stopped, a chap by the name of Ethan Colborne.
00:38:37At this point in time, we don't know whether Ethan Colborne is something to do with the investigation or not.
00:38:42Let's run some Ray Clay.
00:38:44Let's run some Ray Clay.
00:38:46Let's run some Ray Clay.
00:38:47Stay there, man.
00:38:49We'll talk about it in a minute, all right?
00:38:50Looks like I'll ease it down.
00:38:51The next guy's never been through you, OK?
00:38:54What's your name, man?
00:38:55Kyle.
00:38:56Kyle.
00:38:56It's great, man.
00:38:58We've had information linking that vehicle, turning somewhere as far as I'm involved.
00:39:02Definitely, man.
00:39:03Someone said I've got a firearm in my car.
00:39:05We've received information.
00:39:06That is genuinely...
00:39:07That is genuinely...
00:39:10If I knew more, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
00:39:12Got it genuinely done.
00:39:13No problem.
00:39:14OK.
00:39:15No problem.
00:39:15So that's why we're here.
00:39:16That's why you've got a harmless bomb.
00:39:17Anything on you?
00:39:18No problem.
00:39:20No problem.
00:39:21During the stop, the team recover three phones.
00:39:24I put that in airplane mode.
00:39:26I don't know how to...
00:39:27That one I can't swipe up and down on.
00:39:29They could contain evidence to help secure a conviction against Straker.
00:39:34I'll eat a bag.
00:39:35Three bags.
00:39:36Seize them.
00:39:37Yeah, yeah.
00:39:38The amount of data that is now stored on somebody's mobile phone is more than most computers.
00:39:45Depending on your privacy settings and how you set your phone up, it can store, you
00:39:50know, all your messages, all your pictures, videos, your locations.
00:39:54And if we can access those phones, download that information and review it, it can open
00:40:00up investigations in a whole new way.
00:40:04Even if there's nothing on you guys, we'll just have you get held here for a little bit.
00:40:07You do what you need to do.
00:40:09You do what you need to do.
00:40:11You do what you need to do.
00:40:12Just bear with us.
00:40:13Is there anything in the car that we need to know about?
00:40:15No.
00:40:15There's nothing at all.
00:40:17This is not Carl Straker's first interaction with police.
00:40:20He knows right from the moment the blue lights go on behind him, how he's got to play it.
00:40:24And he's got to play it as an innocent man, because he knows this body-worn camera might
00:40:29be shown to a jury in due course.
00:40:31He's an organized criminal.
00:40:32He's immediately thinking about how he's best to present himself.
00:40:35Mr. Dime, you both are under arrest for attempt murder.
00:40:38Anything you do, it's never given evidence.
00:40:40Murder?
00:40:40From what?
00:40:41That'll be explained to you at the custody block, all right?
00:40:50Two weeks on from the shooting, Kyle Straker, the group's key suspect, is finally in custody.
00:40:58The offence, please.
00:41:00The offence attempted murder.
00:41:04I was supposed to have done that in that car.
00:41:07Um, so you're...
00:41:08There's a link somewhere along the lines.
00:41:10Now, they know more than me about it, but then...
00:41:12You hear on suspicion, mate.
00:41:13It doesn't mean...
00:41:15So...
00:41:15I definitely have not...
00:41:17Through the investigation, they said you're linked to Ethan, so suspicion...
00:41:21So, the vehicle, that's what they said to me when they stopped me before.
00:41:23The vehicle, not me personally.
00:41:26Ethan Colburn, the passenger in Straker's car, is unknown to Major Crime Team 1.
00:41:31But he's detained while detectives determine what role, if any, he played.
00:41:39Major Crime had linked the vehicle to a firearms discharge.
00:41:45When you've got people in custody, you've got 24 hours in the first instance.
00:41:48You've got 36 hours if you can convince the superintendent to extend it that far.
00:41:53If you want them any longer than that, you need to go to a court and obtain a warrant of
00:41:56further detention.
00:41:57That means, in custody, everything has to move quickly, and there's lots to do.
00:42:02We've got a circumstantial case at the moment.
00:42:04We need to make sure we've overturned every stone and left nothing to chance when we approach CPS for charging
00:42:11advice.
00:42:16In terms of Straker, we put a marker on his BMW last night.
00:42:20It got on the move at about, what, half nine, something like that.
00:42:25Coming from Tamworth back over to Dudley after nearly two days of activity.
00:42:29The ARVs got behind it. He was arrested from the vehicle.
00:42:34Also in the vehicle was an Ethan Colborne.
00:42:36He lives in Tipton, kind of in a very similar area to where, um, here in Atkins lives.
00:42:42So, we don't know the relevance of Ethan Colborne at the moment.
00:42:45What we've got in the immediacy is three phones, two iPhones and a Nokia burner.
00:42:50Straker's iPhone is switched on and being accepted by the app on an urgent.
00:42:54So, fingers crossed, that's got some stuff in it.
00:42:56We have got quite a nice custody time in terms of, kind of, 11 o'clock.
00:43:00So, that takes us through to 11 o'clock tonight.
00:43:0211 o'clock tomorrow morning when there's Section 42 extension.
00:43:06But, currently, essentially, we're not there. We need more.
00:43:10The team now have just 24 hours to produce further evidence to keep Carl Straker in custody.
00:43:16Well, I'm going to be here till a ridiculous time because, obviously, this operation is going on in the background.
00:43:22Detectives fast-track phone analysis and intensify the search for more CCTV.
00:43:29What we've got is a team tracking this car forward.
00:43:33The next positive sighting of it is the ANPL camera that you're going to be tracking back from at zero
00:43:39at 56.
00:43:40Between here...
00:43:4125 minutes.
00:43:42And here, it's a ten-minute journey.
00:43:44It's taking them 25 minutes.
00:43:46So, we need to understand where they've gone.
00:43:49We have somebody get inside and three photographs of Carl Vaughan and close-up photographs of his tattoo on the
00:43:57back of his left hand.
00:43:59Following his arrest, Straker's BMW was impounded and sent straight to forensics for analysis.
00:44:06The team work in full protective suits, masks, and double gloves.
00:44:11One stray hair or one skin cell could contaminate a sample and destroy its value in court.
00:44:18We're looking at getting gunshot residue, but, of course, gunshot residue has a finite window where it's useful.
00:44:24I'm swabbing the steering wheel, the gear lever, and the iDrive controller.
00:44:32Gunshot residue is microscopic, invisible to the naked eye.
00:44:36Particles of lead, barium, and antimony expel when a firearm is discharged, settling on everything nearby.
00:44:44On a person, it could be gone within hours.
00:44:47On a hard surface, left undisturbed, it can last indefinitely.
00:44:51The clock started the moment that trigger was pulled.
00:44:55Bank card, but it's wrapped in a sock, which is unusual.
00:45:01Wrapped in a sock, hidden in the door.
00:45:03Okay.
00:45:04Is that USB?
00:45:05It's USB, yeah, that's in the glove box.
00:45:1083, 24, 20, 60, 84.
00:45:14Roughly 425.
00:45:17As the entire team works flat out to find the evidence needed to charge Straker and Colburn,
00:45:22a warrant is issued for the arrest of Kieran Atkins.
00:45:27But his phone has gone dead, and detectives are struggling to track him down.
00:45:32When you've got suspects still outstanding, like in this case, Kieran Atkins,
00:45:38it's reasonable to believe that when we arrested Straker and Colburn,
00:45:41their families might have passed that information on.
00:45:46Outstanding suspects then try and do as much as they can to try and stop themselves being caught,
00:45:51such as dropping their phone, moving address, maybe trying to leave the country.
00:45:57And it makes it a lot harder for us to try and find them then.
00:46:04There's three responses to this fence we could see on CCTV, so we believe we've got two of them.
00:46:08Kieran Atkins is the outstanding.
00:46:11That's the home address of his top contacts, and appears to be his top cell.
00:46:16The theory would be he's laying low with her at the mail.
00:46:20Analysis of Atkins' old handset shows repeated calls to a number registered in West Brummage.
00:46:27We know from intelligence that he's got a girlfriend who lives in a block of flats in that area.
00:46:34So what we've then done is deployed into the area to see whether we can pick him up on any
00:46:38CCTV.
00:46:41Before an arrest can be made, D.I. Francis Nock needs proof that Kieran Atkins is living at the flat.
00:46:48A surveillance team is deployed to the area.
00:46:54We're coming into the traffic now, so put the blues on, please, blues on.
00:46:59The team confirm it's Kieran Atkins.
00:47:05Right behind you.
00:47:06So there's a lot of risk in relation to an armed arrest,
00:47:09because even though they're trained officers, you're putting firearms in that area,
00:47:14potentially with somebody who also has guns.
00:47:16The armed officers move in.
00:47:21State red. Strike. Strike. Strike.
00:47:26HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE!
00:47:28HALFANIE! HALFANIE!
00:47:28GET YOUR HANDS OUT!

00:47:39HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE! HALFANIE
00:47:58in custody is in the end we want to get them charged for this offence between the three of

00:50:14at perry bar ds lucy mooney has made a breakthrough in the hunt for the stolen audi
00:50:20which hasn't been seen on camera for two days
00:50:24the audi moves on the 12th to 30th overnight and when it's deposited on the 13th the people have
00:50:31jumped over the wall there effectively
00:50:40been in front of it to try and conceal it there's three people that come out
00:50:49where the audi's deposited just in the corner here you see a couple of figures moving around
00:50:54you see the taxis that they're called to come and collect them
00:51:01the mile on the left looks to go into the straker
00:51:06the one next to him atkins goes inside of him
00:51:11and then there's another appears to be of white lads getting into the front of the taxi there
00:51:21cctv now links straker atkins and potentially colburn to the stolen audi
00:51:27yeah the girls responded this morning and we and i got that recovered
00:51:32as the police sees the audi and it heads to forensics detectives focus on tying colburn to the
00:51:39investigation ethan colborn was arrested by accident out of strikers bmw looking into his
00:51:46phone work yes he's in contact with striker on the daily offense but it doesn't prove anything on its
00:51:51own it just shows that they're friends and they're talking without more evidence colborn's not going to
00:51:57be able to be charged for this fence with stronger evidence needed to charge ethan colburn detectives
00:52:04bring him in for questioning even you were arrested uh yesterday 23 48 hours uh on suspicion of um
00:52:14attempted murder what can you tell me about this incident no comment two vehicles were involved in
00:52:23no comment the first vehicle i want to ask you about is a it's a gray audi a3 quattro what
00:52:29can you tell
00:52:29me about this vehicle no comment do you know who owns it no comment i want to talk as well
00:52:36now
00:52:36about uh the second vehicle that was involved in this and this is uh the black bmw this is the
00:52:43vehicle
00:52:43that you were arrested from yesterday what can you tell me about this vehicle no comment okay who owns
00:52:49that vehicle no comment kyle straker how do you know him talk to you about your your knowledge of
00:52:56firearms have you used firearms before no comment okay do you have access to firearms no comment is
00:53:03there anything that you want to clarify explain at all in that case the time is 17 27 and i'll
00:53:13be
00:53:13honest with you here now it's kyle straker's turn to be interviewed you were arrested on suspicion of
00:53:25attempt murder do you understand what attempted murder is yeah can you describe it to me i've attempted
00:53:31to murder somebody perfect at approximately quarter past midnight on the third of july five shots were
00:53:39verified the victim had been walking down the stairs of a property tell me everything you know about
00:53:43this incident no comment and tell me about where you were around court past midnight on the third of
00:53:49july no comment were you at home no comment was this all a mistake no comment straker isn't talking
00:53:58but the forensic team have completed their analysis of his bmw and now the audi has arrived at the lab
00:54:06mr straker he's driving license
00:54:10i've got several sets of car keys as well yeah we've got an audi audi key there
00:54:22the car keys link kyle straker to the vehicle used in the shooting it's a major breakthrough in the
00:54:35investigation detectives must now determine ethan colburn's role if any and build a robust case to
00:54:41present to the cps so briefly you will be aware of course we've got kieran atkins but we don't know
00:54:49the relevance of ethan colburn at the moment yeah obviously we'll treat him with caution not to not
00:54:54understanding that kyle straker is our focus thank you very much everybody
00:55:01we've got lots and lots going on with the investigation with these people in custody so
00:55:06our focus needs to be getting through these custody periods making sure we secure and preserve all the
00:55:11possible evidence to make our case when we come to charging advice as good as it can possibly be
00:55:19it's a good idea tell me about the firearm in the vehicle no comment did you know about the firearm
00:55:24no
00:55:24comment who had the firearm no comment while carl straker continues to be interviewed charlotte is
00:55:33conducting a thorough analysis of his phones this is a picture that we've recovered from straight as
00:55:40handset download on the 11th at 22 41 we looked at the device and looked at what that device was
00:55:47doing at that time and it showed us that at the time the screenshot was taken he was on a
00:55:51face time
00:55:51with somebody and this is clearly a phone sometimes you can see him like in the corner that's striker
00:55:59when we've got a download such as this where you can see that there's communications from mr
00:56:05striker to various other people about guns and screenshots of guns pictures of guns personally
00:56:12i've been through the phone and there's text messages about guns not recovering the gun whilst
00:56:18frustrating doesn't prohibit us now from demonstrating that he has involvement in firearms
00:56:25which will strengthen our case against him is someone from your vehicle get out with the vehicle
00:56:30and shoot out the house no comment or was the firearm discharged from inside the vehicle no comment
00:56:38the team have yet to recover the gun that was used in the shooting
00:56:43but the image in the phone call gives them a huge clue
00:56:48we don't know what our firearm in this incident is but it might be that weapon and to have him
00:56:55linked
00:56:56to a firearm which corresponds with what might have been used in this offense is obviously really
00:57:01powerful kieran atkins is the final suspect to be questioned detectives have cctv of him with the
00:57:10stolen audi but they still need more evidence before they can put the case to the cps
00:57:17my client wishes to put forward the statement i did not attempting to murder anyone okay now formally
00:57:22advise my clients to exercise the right silence to answer all the questions while using two words
00:57:27those two words being no comments and no concern now cctv tracking has identified the offending
00:57:32vehicle to be a stolen audi sd pottering gray but tell me where you were on the first of july
00:57:41we'll start there it was tuesday night two weeks ago no comment and how did you get home after the
00:57:46aldi been driven away no comment where was the aldi taken to no comment is there anything else at all
00:57:54you can tell me in relation to the theft of aldi no comment
00:58:01deeper analysis of straker's phones has uncovered a new lead in the investigation into the stolen car
00:58:07in a case like this one we have been able to get into the phone it opens up a lot
00:58:11of opportunities for
00:58:12our investigation so clearly straker um previously had possession of the s3 he's got messages on his
00:58:18phone uh straker is in communication with someone called k25 so i found out where my s3 is and i've
00:58:24still got a spare key so i'm going to go take it back but don't come over for nothing text
00:58:30messages
00:58:31confirm kyle straker was the previous owner of the audi and that he kept a second key after selling it
00:58:38on the day of the theft of the audi um straker he sends him a message saying yeah we need
00:58:42that car
00:58:43today bro back and forth messages for the around the theft of the vehicle for us this is huge because
00:58:48it shows that striker is organized and had this car stolen for hire further whatsapp calls uh k25
00:58:55because he can't help himself then sends a message of himself driving an audi drives down drives the audi
00:59:00down to the agreed drop-off point weaver's rise taxi back wallsall street um in comes a taxi
00:59:06out comes profile one there you go readily identifiable as kai everett who is dressed for
00:59:14attempted murder threats to kill going equipped so a man of violence as well kai everett is well
00:59:20known to police and has a number of serious offenses on his record kai everett is now suspect in this
00:59:27investigation we're satisfied at this time he's he's a person who actually stole the car
00:59:32and he needs to be arrested immediately the team track everett down to an address and the tactical
00:59:38support unit get a warrant for his arrest
01:00:07three men have been arrested on suspicion of
01:00:11attempted murder after a mother was shot in a drive-by attack at her home. She remains in
01:00:17hospital with life-changing injuries. Detectives believe they may have a crucial new lead in the
01:00:23theft of the vehicle used in the shooting. Great tracksuit, man back over. You can see that it is
01:00:28the man who's stolen the Audi and the man who drops it at Weaver's rights. Kai Everett has been
01:00:34identified as the suspect in the Audi theft and officers are now moving in to arrest him.

01:01:10hi hands out mate so you're under arrest the theft of my vehicle on the grounds
01:01:17that a vehicle was stolen and used uh in further offenses with everett detained the focus shifts
01:01:25back to the prime suspects in custody time is running out but the investigation is far from
01:01:31over so just check the timing so so that this one started at zero zero zero zero 15. so we
01:01:39identify
01:01:40the the audi as a stolen vehicle that was stolen at wensbury the day before and it comes down from
01:01:46wensbury stays in dudley and then goes and commits the offense uh through our ccv we've uh we've seen
01:01:52that it interacts before and after the offense with a bmw 330 that is an inch that is a vehicle
01:01:59insured to an ocg member called kyle straker we've obviously got more for straken than we've got for
01:02:06atkins and colborne at this point in time it is bmw that's linked atkins and colborne um we are
01:02:11dependent on phone work and interactions with straker himself my assessment of it would be
01:02:17we could do with a bit more if we're going to be charging those two and we really need to
01:02:21try and
01:02:25find it we have this six minute gap just ever so slightly pre-offense um between 23 56 and 0006
01:02:36that we've been trying to fill and a consistent track for us there would be very very helpful
01:02:41because it negates the ability for anybody to say i got out of the car
01:02:45as kyle straker kieran atkins and ethan colborne enter their final hours of custody
01:02:52new evidence emerges about the audi's movements in the minutes before the shooting
01:02:58what happens here is the audi pulls into petrol station registration plate clearly displayed
01:03:06same characteristics as our authentic vehicle the headlights being out what we've then got is
01:03:12ethan colborne starts to fuel up the car with petrol and it's here that we get that really good
01:03:19facial image that clearly um identifies that person as kieran atkins this petrol station confirms that
01:03:26there are at least three people in that vehicle that therefore puts cole straker as the driver for the
01:03:33offense it puts ethan colborne and kieran atkins as the two passengers
01:03:40for major crime team one footage showing all three suspects in the audi just 30 minutes before the
01:03:47shooting is a major turning point we've got our offending vehicle on the forecourt of a garage
01:03:53showing the registration plates for us this is absolutely huge because it puts them in that car
01:04:00very very close to the offense so there is no way now they can ever say wasn't me wasn't there
01:04:07wasn't in the car so it massively gives us so much evidence against them for this offense that we
01:04:14just didn't have before
01:04:19we combine that with the evidence we've already got and i think we're in position to charge these people
01:04:24all right yeah thank you bye
01:04:36uh carl you've been charged with the following three offenses you don't have to say anything
01:04:39that may harm your defense if you do not mention now something which you'll later rely on in court
01:04:43anything you do say may be given an evidence thank you very much bye
01:04:52we've had the call from cps and they're willing to charge all three with attempt murder and possession
01:04:58of a firearm it's an absolute massive relief for us right if you put car back in c29 please thank
01:05:04you
01:05:05oh i'm so hopeful right ethan from the third of july this year at dudley in the county of west
01:05:11midlands
01:05:12you attempted to murder that's country sections 1-1 of the criminal attempts act of 1981
01:05:16on the 3rd of july had in your possession a firearm with intent by means thereof to endanger life and
01:05:21that's country section 16 of and schedule 6 to the firearms act of 1968. doing what we do whilst it's
01:05:29absolutely fantastic to bring justice looking at the victim herself she was in her own home where she
01:05:36should feel safe with her children and she was shot and for the rest of her life she's going to
01:05:41remember
01:06:10that
