00:02The driver's making off.

00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. The vehicle's all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22We just have warning markers for the firearms.
00:25Vehicle's done.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, good.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:37Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out of here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're gonna need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59We've blown 128.
01:00Eleven minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03You're on the arrest.
01:03You're on the arrest.
01:04You're on the arrest.
01:06You're on the arrest.
01:07You're on the arrest.
01:09You're on the arrest.
01:21One of the victims battling a surge in theft.
01:24They've had to drill through the ignition.
01:26Get the bike to switch on.
01:28Hunting down stolen vehicles.
01:30Running.
01:31Running on.
01:32Running on.
01:32That's hard in!
01:34Wanted shoplifters.
01:35I'm going to give you the opportunity now to come clean, OK, about where that stuff's all from.
01:41And teenagers on the run.
01:44Stay there! Stay there!
01:46Give me your hands! Give me your hands now!
02:01Oskar Tango units are getting quite a few reports of some stolen vehicles.
02:06Are we getting units heading that way or in the vicinity at Knowledge, NA?
02:12Tango 4-3, receiving 4-7.
02:16Following a spike in motorbike thefts across Derbyshire,
02:19traffic cop Andy Swift is tailing a group of riders linked to thefts earlier in the day.
02:29As two of the bikes separate...
02:31There's three altogether initially, but the two have turned off somewhere, I want to stop in the rear one.
02:35Andy focuses on the rider ahead.
02:39Vehicle is failing to stop.
02:40We've got a full delivery, high-pulse vehicle advanced driver, T-patch,
02:43but I can't see if they've got headwear on or not, because it's the time of night.
02:46M-PASS talks along with me.
02:50Yeah, we see.
02:53A police helicopter is making its way towards Andy.
02:57Andy from M-PASS.
02:59And will beam its coverage to force control.
03:02Thank you. M-PASS, when you use the area for downlink, please.
03:064945. We're a mile from 26. We'll get off there.
03:10Traffic cops Chris Wells, Jackson and Devon Scarborough are also on their way.
03:16We've had a lot of stolen bikes today in Derby this afternoon,
03:20so there's every chance that this is going to be those stolen bikes.
03:24But we've got M-PASS above that should be with them shortly,
03:29so that gives us a much better chance of catching them,
03:32especially if we get resources to the area to get our containment on anywhere that they may go off-road.
03:38More than a million pounds' worth of motorbikes are stolen every month.
03:45Hello, team, sir.
03:46I'm making some ground to it.
03:48Team Sergeant Scott Riley heads to the area to help coordinate the pursuit.
03:54You've not got the luxury of time with a motorbike,
03:58because almost instantly they can be off a public road,
04:01across parkland where we can't follow.
04:04It's really important to try and get some eyes in the sky,
04:07get air support with us as soon as possible.
04:10With air support still minutes away, Andy continues tailing the rider.
04:16He's got a balaclava on, he's got a blue body warmer,
04:19and his top is like a light blue and grey striped top.
04:24For M-PASS, is he anywhere near?
04:27Yeah, from an A-4 units, I note the request for M-PASS,
04:30if he's standby we should be getting an ETA shortly.
04:34Yeah, from M-PASS, standby.
04:40From 4-6, I'm advanced, high performance, my vehicle, TPAC.
04:46PC Adam Hardy is going after the other two bikes
04:49that peeled away from Andy.
04:53So I think it's going to come back to Chad.
04:56While Adam searches for the others.
04:59It's a low amount of traffic, but no pedestrian.
05:03Andy's suspect is showing no signs of stopping.
05:06We're at the red ETA, standby.
05:09Daring high, which through is clear, right, right, right.
05:15I'm 4945, we're not far now, so we'll try and get ahead of it.
05:19Put the stinger this side.
05:21Nearby, Chris and Devon race to set a trap to puncture its tyres.
05:26Hello, 10-0-4.
05:27I've got that vehicle.
05:29While Scott closes in to support Andy.
05:32Yeah, that's all received. Thank you for that.
05:35Pursuing a stolen motorbike isn't so much about the risk to us.
05:39It's more about the risk to the individual on that bike.
05:42It is possible for us to sting the motorbike.
05:45It is possible for us to put tactics in place.
05:47But it is more difficult than doing it with a car.
05:50I've still got a duty of care to that rider,
05:52and so has everybody on our teams.
05:56Red ATS, red ATS, standby.
05:59Vehicle's stopping me.
06:00I'm going.
06:01DRA high.
06:02Vehicle stopped me.
06:04I'm back to low.
06:06I'm in fast.
06:07Are they anywhere near?
06:10Overhead, downlink, so on.
06:12We've got the vehicle on camera.
06:14With the helicopter now above.
06:16From an AC error too, I am monitoring this incident.
06:19Control will oversee the pursuit at Force HQ.
06:22M-Pass, have you got me?
06:25I'm in fast, I'll let you take over.
06:32I'm going to do all the traffic like we're tearing.
06:33I'll back up a little bit.
06:38NA, Oscar Tango 4-3.
06:40As the pursuit reaches the city centre,
06:43PC Alex Head and Scott join Andy from behind.
06:49Ultimately, going through my mind is that this incident
06:52can very quickly escalate to a fatal incident.
06:56If somebody steps out on that road,
06:58if it loses control, hits another vehicle head-on,
07:01the stakes are as high as they can ever be.
07:07On 4-9, we've got a stinger in case it comes back out towards Pentigan.
07:11Nearby.
07:11All right, sit here.
07:12Sit here.
07:13Chris and Devon are searching for a location to set a trap.
07:18Yeah, just sit here a minute.
07:20It's all we know.
07:23But with the rider turning in another direction...
07:26Come out, down by the bridge, that bridge.
07:28Go right here, then.
07:29Once again, they're playing catch-up.
07:33They'll probably go round here.
07:34Put that roundabout up here, aren't they?
07:35So what we'll do...
07:37Just go towards...
07:39Go right and then left.
07:42Close by, desperate to escape,
07:44the rider makes a deadly move.
08:06Concerned for the rider's safety.
08:12The team is forced to act.
08:15You've got the inside, Scott, I'll stay at the back.
08:19You know that you've got to make the best decision
08:22with the information you've got at the time,
08:24and ultimately, that's going to be played out in a court of law
08:28and scrutinised for months and years to come
08:32if something goes wrong.
08:35As they close in,
08:36a member of the public tries to help box the rider in.
08:42But the biker slips past.
08:45And he quickly pulls ahead to corner the rider
08:48and block his escape.
09:07Coming up...
09:08Stay there! Stay there!
09:10Give me some hands! Give me some hands now!
09:13Officers hunt down the runaway rider.
09:15How old are you?
09:1716.
09:18Pathetic.
09:20And...
09:21I believe this vehicle's aware of our presence.
09:23More thieves on the run.
09:26It went into the garden and then it's disappeared.
09:29It could be around here somewhere.
09:46You've got the inside, Scott. I'll stay at the back.
09:49After a spate of motorcycle thefts earlier in the day,
09:53officers have been involved in a dangerous air-to-ground pursuit
09:56of a suspected stolen motorbike.
10:05While one officer hunts for two riders who have fled...
10:09So I think it's going to come back to Chad.
10:12I can't see it, but it's like Jurassic Park.
10:14They're coming through bushes.
10:15The rest are closing in on a runaway suspect.
10:19Straight ahead of you, Scott.
10:21Straight ahead of you.
10:24I'm losing a bit of a creek over there.
10:27Stay there! Stay there!
10:29Give me your hands! Give me your hands now!
10:30Give me your hands!
10:32I'm here.
10:34What's your hands?
10:35Hands behind you back now.
10:36All right. All right.
10:38Put your arms out! Arms out!
10:40Stay still. Don't resist.
10:43And pass, are you monitoring the driver?
10:46I think they've got it.
10:47I think they've got it.
10:50I'm not resisting.
10:51I'm not resisting.
10:55I'm not resisting.
10:57I'm not resisting.
10:57All right.
10:58Oh, oh, one, two, three.
10:59Oh!
11:05No!
11:07No!
11:09Get over here.
11:11PC Andy Swift questions the young lad.
11:14How old are you?
11:16Well?
11:17Sixteen.
11:18Sixteen.
11:18Pathetic.
11:19What are you doing here?
11:20Should have learnt, shouldn't you?
11:21Should have stopped.
11:23Do you want my dad now, yeah?
11:25Yeah?
11:27Come on.
11:28Answer the questions.
11:29No, no more, mate.
11:29I want to go to custody.
11:31Do you?
11:31I bet you do.
11:31I bet you've been there a few times, haven't you?
11:33Yeah.
11:33I bet you have.
11:34Sixteen.
11:34You haven't been there, do you?
11:35No.
11:36What's your name, buddy?
11:37You won't tell, mate.
11:39What's your name?
11:40I've just taken the custody.
11:41No, you're up to.
11:42I've told you to remember him.
11:43I've told him my custody.
11:44Right, you're under the rest of the split.
11:46Dangerous driving.
11:47Failing to stop.
11:49Okay?
11:50You don't have to say anything, but it may harm you offensive.
11:52If you don't mention, one question.
11:54If you wish you later on the court, anything you say may be given his evidence.
11:58Shit in there for us, young man.
12:03All right, Pat.
12:04Is there anyone else talking?
12:06Just waiting.
12:07No update of the client to pretend we'll never.
12:12Oscar Tango 39 receiving.
12:14We've got reports of an abandoned motorbike.
12:17We haven't got details of a VRM at the minute.
12:20A couple of miles away.
12:22A motorbike that's been smashed up and dumped.
12:26Traffic cop Adam Hardy is looking for the two bikes that got away.
12:31Round here.
12:36Swifty had it.
12:37Three bikes make off from him.
12:39I imagine this is going to be one of the same.
12:43Whoever was on it is a longer one.
12:46Hello.
12:47Have you seen what's happened?
12:48A local resident comes forward.
12:51The first thing when I heard something bang.
12:54And I opened the window to look around.
12:57There were three guys.
12:59Two of them were on one motorbike.
13:02And another one, only one person been here.
13:05And they start shouting at him, just leave it, leave it, leave it.
13:07And he saw me.
13:09And he just ran to them.
13:10He jumped on their scooter.
13:12So there were three of them.
13:14He just left the vehicle here.
13:17And the helmet was there.
13:19And they left that direction.
13:21That's it.
13:21Did they all get on the same bike?
13:23Yeah.
13:24On the same bike.
13:25There were three of them.
13:26But you could see there's a really young guys.
13:28Like they're kind of teenagers.
13:30They're like three of boys.
13:32And they're pretty young.
13:34They've clearly lost skill.
13:38Riding like idiots on the...
13:39And gone over the speed bump.
13:41They've left a helmet.
13:43It's going to leave a lot of DNA evidence in that helmet.
13:45So we're going to seize that and get our forensics to have a look at that.
13:49And we'll be able to identify who it is.
13:52The registration's missing of the bike.
13:53So I think they've damaged that to obscure the identity of the bike.
13:57So we can't track it from the registration.
14:01There's quite a bit of damage to the ignition that they've had to drill through the ignition to get the
14:08bike to switch on.
14:10I'm suspecting it's going to be stoward.
14:15Back at the roundabout.
14:23As Andy and Sergeant Scott Riley inspect the runaway rider's bike.
14:28Chris Wells Jackson and Devon Scarborough arrive.
14:32I'll put this back in the boot before it castrates me.
14:37Surrendered.
14:39Good work, mate. Very good.
14:42What's he done? Has he tried to...
14:44Tried to right-side himself as far as well.
14:46He's basically reached out.
14:47These have been getting nicked all afternoon.
14:49That's what... This is what FPT's been chasing around all afternoon.
14:52He saw me and it's just when I thought I'm not...
14:54Another update from an A.
14:56We can confirm now. We've got a link to incident. It was stolen.
15:00Checks confirm the bike is one of those stolen earlier today.
15:06Further under arrest and suspicion of theft of motorbike.
15:09OK? Remain under caution.
15:11OK?
15:13We're going to tell us your name then, Chuck,
15:15so we'll find out when we'll fingerprint you.
15:16And that means we can look after you better.
15:19OK?
15:20There's no point in...
15:20He'd try to be a big man now for...
15:22Come on, what's your name?
15:23I'd rather say it first with me, mate.
15:25What's the difference, sir?
15:27Between that and then?
15:27I'm not saying it'll confirm it to you.
15:29Yeah.
15:29Are you wanted?
15:30No, I'm not.
15:31You're missing?
15:32No.
15:32I'm just saying I'm not saying...
15:33You're clearly going to need an appropriate adult,
15:35so if you tell us now,
15:36we can get everything ready for you in custody.
15:39Yeah?
15:40We'll get them moving now,
15:42so they can meet you down at custody.
15:45What's your name, Chuck?
15:47After a check on the police database...
15:49There you go, that's him.
15:50Oh, yes, that's him.
15:52Devon's identified the teenager.
15:54He's on bail at the minute.
15:56Not to fail to stop for police on bikes.
16:00Oh, stealing motorbikes.
16:02Oh, dear.
16:03Mate, you've got bail conditions.
16:05You should be at home between 7pm and 7am.
16:09You should not enter Derbyshire,
16:11and you should not be in a group of two or more.
16:14It looks like someone's getting remanded.
16:15Say again?
16:16There's a couple of streets in Derby.
16:19There's a couple of streets I can't enter.
16:21So you do know you've got bail conditions then?
16:23You've still broken your bail conditions, haven't you?
16:26But it's exactly the same thing,
16:27so obviously it's not registering with you.
16:30Someone who's so young
16:32has obviously been in a lot of trouble.
16:37It's not a promising thing.
16:39OK, because you've been involved in a road traffic collision,
16:42OK, I'm going to request you a sample of saliva, OK?
16:45Are you happy to provide me the sample?
16:47Yeah? OK.
16:48Lovely stuff.
16:49Stick your tongue out for me.
16:51PC Alex Head tests the rider for drugs.
16:54So it turns out the shop that we've arrested
16:57he's already clearly well known for theft.
17:01And clearly all he's doing at 16 years old
17:04is just out stealing bikes.
17:06That's all he knows.
17:07That's all he's ever going to know.
17:08And I don't think that he'll ever change.
17:10And it's probably going to be his life.
17:12He's hanging around with people
17:13that are in that sort of environment
17:15where they just want to go out stealing things all the time.
17:17So I'm not really holding much hope out for the lad, unfortunately.
17:22So we'll see what happens to him.
17:24But the fact that he's got bail conditions
17:26should mean that we'll get, hopefully,
17:27some sort of positive result.
17:29Young man!
17:31The result of the drug test is ready.
17:36You are further under arrest
17:37to drive in a motor vehicle
17:39whilst they have a specified limit of a controlled substance.
17:42In this case, it's cannabis, OK?
17:44So what we're going to do now
17:45is go down to the custody wing
17:48and we'll get some bloods from you
17:50and then we'll send them off for analysis
17:51and see how much you're over or underbuying, OK?
17:55If you've grown up from when you were 13 or 14,
17:58being in and out of trouble with the police
18:00and it's still happening,
18:01it's probably a very hard cycle to break out of
18:03and it just becomes part and parcel of your life.
18:05Once you are in that system
18:08and you've got nothing else to lose,
18:09it's a hard downward spiral to get out of.
18:13Thefted bikes and illegal bikes in Derbyshire
18:16is causing us a little bit of pain.
18:19They're inherently difficult to deal with
18:21because the offenders are quite often juveniles
18:24so we've got to be quite respectful
18:26about how we deal with them.
18:27So it's really pleasing to get a result.
18:29Find somebody red-handed on a stolen bike like tonight.
18:33After breaking his bail conditions,
18:36the 16-year-old suspect
18:37could now be facing a custodial sentence.
18:56It's not just motorcycle thefts
18:59keeping the traffic cops under pressure.
19:02In the UK, more than 30 vans are stolen every day,
19:06worth £200 million a year.
19:124-3, I'm heading there now.
19:15Near Chesterfield,
19:16Alex Head is now searching for a van
19:18that's just been stolen
19:19along with thousands of pounds worth of tools.
19:25The stolen van has just activated cameras.
19:28Firearms have actually just got behind that vehicle
19:30and they're just following it.
19:32So at the minute, I'm hopefully trying to intercept her
19:34and help put a stop in on this van.
19:36While Alex races to catch up,
19:39That's it.
19:40Yeah.
19:41Firearms officers tail the van.
19:44Stand by, stand by, stand by.
19:47Contact with that vehicle.
19:49It's at the roundabout, on the roundabout.
19:51Taking the fourth, taking the fourth.
19:54Appears to be with another vehicle,
19:56which can't get the red job.
20:00So we're taking that vehicle.
20:02As the van pulls ahead.
20:04I believe this vehicle is aware of our presence.
20:08Officers identify two suspects in the car.
20:30I'm running.
20:31I'm running out of my garden.
20:33Whatever I'm about.
20:48If you get me on mapping, he's gone behind a house.
20:54Coming up.
20:55Blaze, come to the door.
20:58As the traffic cops hunt down a runaway suspect.
21:01Do you know anything about a van?
21:03Right, and you don't know anything about tools?
21:05No.
21:06Officers uncover a stash of suspicious items.
21:10Let's have a look.
21:11There must be a lot of equipment here.
21:14And the search is on.
21:15There's absolutely rams.
21:17For a pair of wanted shoplifters.
21:20With go-to items of shop thievery.
21:45Near Chesterfield, officers are on the hunt for a suspect
21:48who fled on foot after abandoning a stolen van
21:51along with thousands of pounds worth of tools.
21:59Packs onto a massive field.
22:01It went into the garden and then it's disappeared.
22:05It could be around here somewhere.
22:11A search of the van is also underway.
22:17But the tools are missing.
22:20I'll meet you there, Bungie.
22:22While the hunt continues,
22:25PC Alex Head is looking for more suspects spotted in a car.
22:32We're on the way to the registered keeper's address
22:35for the vehicle.
22:38The driver and the vehicle,
22:40they're going to get arrested straight away
22:42and then that gives us the power to search the premises
22:44and hopefully find some stolen items.
22:49Just pulling up now.
22:57It's parked up.
23:04An eight-tangle four-three.
23:09Somebody's in.
23:10Lights are on.
23:12Curtains have just been switched.
23:17With the runner from the van still missing.
23:21It's blaze, come to the door.
23:24Alex and other officers surround the property.
23:27Give me a second.
23:28We've got an answer in the back.
23:32All right, well, at the minute,
23:33we need to narrow it down.
23:34Now you've let us in.
23:35Do you want to check in the house for now?
23:37Your house and close.
23:40Where have you been?
23:41I've been checking the bullpen in the same way.
23:44Right, is this your house?
23:45Is that your car?
23:47Yes.
23:47Right, OK, you're under arrest
23:48on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, OK?
23:50You don't have to say anything,
23:51but it may harm you defensive.
23:52If you do not mention one question or something
23:53which you like to learn,
23:54anything you do say may be given as evidence, OK?
23:57Right, do you know anything about a van?
23:59No.
24:00Right, and you don't know anything about tools?
24:01No.
24:02Right.
24:08Alex searches the suspect's car.
24:14Right, let's have a look.
24:16She's here.
24:18And discovers a dash cam.
24:22So we're just trying to find out where these tools could be.
24:25This vehicle here has been with that van.
24:30The mail is registered to keep this vehicle.
24:33So I'm going to just have a look now at this dash cam
24:38and see whether this shows where this vehicle's been this evening.
24:43Inside the house, officers question the suspect.
24:47Right, I've got a dash cam.
24:49Right.
24:49Tell us what's gone off and we'll talk to us about it.
24:55The man says he hasn't done anything.
24:58Yeah.
24:59What do you need to tell them?
25:00He says somebody gave him some stuff to put in his shed
25:03but hasn't stolen the van.
25:07So it is in our top shed where Swiftie's got the top shed.
25:10That's going to go wrong.
25:13Swiftie, top shed, mate.
25:15Top shed.
25:17PC Andy Swift assists with the search.
25:20There must be a lot of equipment.
25:23There must be a lot of equipment here.
25:27Officers suspect the thieves have stolen the tools
25:29and put them in the man's car before stealing the van itself.
25:35The work in theory so far is they've unloaded all the tools
25:40and then the van's been taken.
25:42And he was most likely going to be picking up once they dumped the van.
25:46That's what I think, anyway.
25:48But we've got his dash cam as well from his car
25:50so hopefully that'll stop giving a bit of a clearer picture
25:54of what's happened
25:56and the identity of who's actually stolen the van.
26:00So all of these things in here, there's loads of stuff in the boot,
26:04there's loads of stuff in the back seats,
26:07thousands and thousands of pounds worth of tools.
26:10This is somebody's business.
26:12This is someone's livelihood.
26:14And tonight they've just decided to steal that person's van
26:17and then steal all his tools as well.
26:19It's just appalling that people think that they can just take other people's stuff
26:24and just ruin lives.
26:25It's disgusting, to be honest.
26:27It's the only word for it.
26:29Millions of pounds worth of tools are stolen from tradespeople every year.
26:35Yeah, we've got them.
26:37Yeah, we've got them.
26:38Bear with us and we'll meet you at Chesfield, Nick.
26:41As Sergeant Scott Riley arranges to meet the owners of the stolen tools and van,
26:47there's more in there, there's lots of them.
26:49There's more suspicious items.
26:51You've got the wall stuff there, look.
26:55There, you've got ladders, you've got these blowers there.
26:58Oh, well.
26:59There's two boxes back there and Christ knows what's in the name.
27:03That's the bill.
27:04What is it?
27:05It's about easy.
27:07We're going to have a second so, won't we?
27:08Yeah, there's marks there, look.
27:09Sergeant.
27:11He's saying it's all his.
27:13He's saying it's his.
27:14He's saying it's his.
27:16He's saying all this stuff in this shed is his, because he's built all this shed.
27:19Well, the RFP's waiting at Chesfield Police Station,
27:22so what I suggest we do is get you off to Chesfield Police Station.
27:27With all the stuff.
27:28He can start identifying what's his.
27:29Yep.
27:30We're going from there.
27:32We've got the details, we've got all the items we needed.
27:35The most sensible way going forward is just deal with it slow time now.
27:39So we're just going back to Chesfield now.
27:41We're going to go and unload all the stolen items which we believe will come from the van this evening,
27:47and then we're going to meet the VIP there, and he's going to identify everything.
27:58What's your trade?
28:00We're just builders.
28:01General builders.
28:02Yeah.
28:03The owners of the stolen van and tools arrive.
28:06That's ours.
28:08This stuff.
28:09Pump.
28:10Submersible pump.
28:11Yeah, that's somewhere it's got pump.
28:13Work lights.
28:16Radio.
28:17At least we've got radio.
28:19Is that your Ox Spirit as well?
28:20That's my Ox Spirit level, yeah.
28:22And then my Macco one there.
28:25Yeah, and that little Dewalt one.
28:27Did you have a Ox Plaster as well?
28:30Yeah, that one there.
28:31That's in there somewhere.
28:33That one.
28:33Oh yeah, you've got that.
28:34That's fine.
28:35So how many thousands of pounds are here then?
28:41Two and a half hours to have my van and my tools back is phenomenal.
28:45To take somebody's tools and their livelihood away is just disgusting.
28:49Without the tools, we're nothing.
28:51No chance of making any money.
28:53I'm glad we've got you back.
28:55Thank you very much for all that jazz.
28:57Is there anything missing?
28:59Not that I can think of, no.
29:00Not that I can think of.
29:02Brilliant.
29:02I say everything that's worth anything is there.
29:05Brilliant.
29:06Good.
29:08Once recovered and examined, the men's van will also be returned.
29:13Really happy for the lads who've got the tools back.
29:15We get jobs like this where we find tools,
29:17but it's quite rare to find tools
29:19and then actually be able to give them directly back to the owner that same night.
29:24Ultimately, these tools probably would have gone on a car boot sale or something like that.
29:28Might have got a few hundred quid for them,
29:31but we're talking thousands of pounds worth of tools,
29:35as well as the hundreds of pounds per day that tradesmen lose.
29:39So it's just had such a massive impact on people when they steal these types of tools.
29:46It's estimated around 80 million pounds worth of potential income is lost each year due to tool theft.
30:00Coming up...
30:01This vehicle's got a marker on it that believes that there's going to be two women in it
30:04who are potentially out thieving from shops.
30:07Alex is on the hunt for wanted shoplifters.
30:10Can you show me where the receipt is then?
30:13No, I can't find it.
30:15As the crackdown on theft continues.
30:18Do you understand the suspicion of theft?
30:20You don't have to say anything, but it may not mean a theft.
30:22You do not mention when questioned something which you lay to line in court.
30:25Anything you do say may be given evidence.
30:40Let me ask a 10-0-4-3.
30:41Can we open the shoplifting job, please?
30:44Assign myself to it.
30:46I think 4-7 and 4-6 as well, please.
30:50It's just entered Matlock around that area.
30:53Thank you, I'll put you to it.
30:55I'm just getting the vehicle details.
30:58Traffic cop Alex Head is on patrol.
31:03There's a car just entered the area,
31:06which is known to contain two female shoplifters.
31:10It's been sighted elsewhere in the country.
31:12I believe it's probably out on the take at the minute.
31:17So it's a case of just trying to get there on time and trying to intercept them
31:19and hopefully catch them red-handed.
31:22There's some stolen items on them.
31:26With over half a million offences reported last year,
31:30shoplifting across England and Wales has reached an all-time high.
31:35Shoplifters can go into a shop.
31:37Within a few minutes, they can take hundreds of pounds worth of items.
31:41Common things which are cleaning products,
31:45things like everyday items which cost quite a bit,
31:47but they can shift quite quickly.
31:50For career criminals, it can be quite lucrative for them.
31:55Alex enters a local retail park.
31:58Yep, that's it.
32:00N-A-Oscar 10-043.
32:02That vehicle I'm looking for is in the car park at Sainsbury's.
32:06There's only one way in and out of this car park, which is this road here.
32:11So I'll just wait until they come out and see what they've got on them.
32:14Another officer arrives to assist.
32:17Hello.
32:18What is it?
32:19So it's an MG HS Trophy.
32:24It's like a 4x4.
32:27Motability vehicle.
32:28It's known on niche for three shop thefts.
32:31It's got a low-wack marker on it.
32:33You've got three real groups of shoplifters.
32:36You've got people who might be addicts,
32:38and they're stealing to feed the habit.
32:40You've got organised crime.
32:42They know what they're doing.
32:43But I've also noticed an increase in late 40s, early 50-year-olds.
32:47They don't have a job, so they're just going out
32:49and they're just taken to stealing, trying to pay the bills.
32:54N-A-E-T-043.
32:56That vehicle's just moved off.
32:59Now it's a question of where's the best place to pull in.
33:06Alex pulls up alongside the suspect.
33:11Hello there.
33:12Hi.
33:13Yeah, good, thank you.
33:14You see that car park by that garage?
33:16Do you mind just pulling in there for me?
33:24Whoa.
33:40Right, it's all right.
33:41Stay in the car for me two seconds, OK?
33:42So, the reason I've stopped you, OK?
33:44This vehicle's got a marker on it
33:46that believes that there will be two women in it
33:47who are potentially out thieving from shops.
33:51OK?
33:53So, right now, OK,
33:54you're going to both be detained, OK, for a stop search.
33:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
33:59OK?
34:00Before I do that, is there anything in this vehicle stolen?
34:03Nothing.
34:03Nothing?
34:04OK.
34:05You take your seat in there.
34:06I'll just take this from you.
34:07Oh, can I have my handbag?
34:08Not at the minute, no, because you've been detained.
34:11No, well, we'll sort it all out.
34:14With the organised criminals, there's certain stores that they target.
34:17They know what they're going in for.
34:19They know what sells.
34:20They know what their high-ticket items are.
34:23N-A-T-043.
34:25Unsurprisingly, there is a lot of cleaning products
34:28in the boot of this car.
34:30This is Stainsbury's stuff.
34:32Absolutely rammed with go-to items of shop thievery.
34:38We've got receipts for all this, yeah?
34:41Alex questions the passenger.
34:42Can I have the receipt, please?
34:43She's done it on her phone.
34:45OK, but you still get a receipt, though, don't you?
34:47Just because you do it on your phone.
34:47Oh, not me.
34:48I haven't got an iPad.
34:50OK.
34:52Right then.
34:54Yeah?
34:54This receipts, where is it all?
34:56She says you've got them.
34:58I'm going to give you the opportunity now to come clean, OK,
35:02about where that stuff's all from.
35:04Because to me, that's a boot of a shoplifter.
35:06It's food and everything.
35:08It's half the afternoon.
35:09What, all the cleaning stuff?
35:11What, cleaning stuff?
35:12Yeah.
35:12Clean up as well.
35:13All the dishwasher tablets, all the stuff which...
35:16Yeah.
35:16OK.
35:17I don't believe that.
35:19Come and show me where the receipt is on this.
35:20It's in one of the bags, though.
35:22In the Sainsbury's bag,
35:23because obviously you've all got your Sainsbury's bags for life there.
35:25So come and show me where the receipt is, then.
35:40The amount of times I've been lied to,
35:44it's every single shift.
35:45I can't remember what I've passed.
35:49They think we're born yesterday.
35:51They think we don't know how to do our jobs,
35:52and they think they can just get away with it.
35:54No, I can't find it.
35:57I can't find it.
35:58I can't find it, that.
35:58Can I take the seat back in my car?
36:00All right.
36:01We know straight away.
36:02We can tell for the little tell-tale signs.
36:05Yeah.
36:06OK.
36:08You're under arrest and suspicion of theft.
36:10OK, you don't have to say anything,
36:11but it may have an offence.
36:12If you do not mention when questioned,
36:13something which you lay to line in court,
36:14anything you do say may be given evidence.
36:17We're also going to be seizing your vehicle, OK,
36:19as it's been used in crime.
36:21OK, so you'll have to argue with motability
36:23about why you're using it like this, OK,
36:25and potentially they might not give it your back.
36:26OK.
36:27Put your seatbelt on for us.
36:29Where am I going?
36:31Ripley.
36:34Another officer arrives to deal with the passenger.
36:38The plan is, I'll get the car lifted using crime.
36:43They can go to Sainsbury's.
36:44All that stuff in the boot is Sainsbury's stuff.
36:46I don't know where this stuff is.
36:48There's some M&S knickers and all sorts.
36:51You're under arrest on suspicion of theft.
36:52The necessity for your arrest is a prompt and effective investigation,
36:55which basically means we're going to go and look for CCTV, OK,
36:58take a statement from the businesses,
36:59which we believe you've stolen from,
37:01and then you'll be interviewed at a later date, OK?
37:05Please, if you can just tell them we've got two coming down from that look.
37:09There's hundreds of pounds worth of products in that car.
37:14We've got a lot of duplicate items.
37:16These items are quite high-value items, like dishwasher tablets.
37:20There's about 10 packs in there, so that's about £150 just in dishwasher tablets.
37:24The normal person doesn't go into a shop
37:27and purchase 10 packs of dishwasher tablets
37:30or 10 packs of washing tablets,
37:32and they're stolen for resale,
37:34so that they can go down the pub,
37:35go down somewhere, you know, with people that they know,
37:38and they can offload those products for a cheap price.
37:43The passenger is wanted for other crimes.
37:47So Sergeant has just run the passenger through,
37:49as well as being arrested for the shop thefts.
37:51She's now also been arrested for a theft down in West Mid's area.
37:56So another thing just to add to her custody sheet.
38:01Checks on the driver...
38:03So you are further under arrest on suspicion of theft.
38:06..reveal she's wanted too.
38:09Whereby items at the approximate value of £490 have been stolen, OK?
38:15So obviously we've just run this person through PNC.
38:19It shows they were also wanted from a theft early in the year
38:22from a Nike store in Birmingham.
38:24So she's been further arrested for that offence,
38:27and they'll send an officer up to interview her later on.
38:32Both women are being taken to custody.
38:36Where have we lost the rest?
38:37March.
38:38March.
38:38I remember the day.
38:39Was that in Knott's?
38:42No.
38:43Where was it?
38:44It's going now.
38:45It's going now?
38:47Same thing?
38:48Can you just go for that green door there, please?
38:54We've had it confirmed that the stuff from Sainsbury's was stolen.
38:57Over £200 worth of items there.
39:00We know that they'll have been recently, to be honest,
39:02so the likelihood is that they'll get remanded for this job.
39:05The car had an intel marker on it relating to the vehicle being involved in shop thefts.
39:11Then commenced a stop search and found what I believe to be stolen items in the car
39:17from Sainsbury's and then multiple other shops.
39:20She's also wanted by Westmids for a shop theft
39:26with an approximate value of £490 worth of items being stolen.
39:32What do you do for a living?
39:34Do you work?
39:34I don't know.
39:36When you look at their histories, they're prolific.
39:39They've been in and out of prison quite recently, to be honest,
39:41so the likelihood is that they'll get remanded for this job
39:44and sent to court on a Monday
39:48and they'll probably get a custodial sentence again.
39:52With shop thefts, traditionally, I think you'd probably associate them with drug users
39:56and trying to score the next fix,
39:58but this seems to be like an ongoing trend with people
40:02just wanting to have their extra money, finding life tough.
40:06When you think about the woman who was driving,
40:09a 60-year-old female, she shouldn't be going to prison.
40:12She should be kicking back and enjoying life,
40:14but she is where she is and she made her life choices.
40:22Shoplifting costs retailers more than £2 billion a year.
40:28People say it's a victim's crime because they're big multinationals,
40:32but they're not, because when the company decides that
40:34they can't take the loss from that shop anymore,
40:36they'll just shut it,
40:38and then that's local people who are losing their jobs.
40:42In the last year, over 21,000 thefts were recorded by Derbyshire Police.
40:50Theft type offences are one of my pet peeves.
40:54Ultimately, our goal is to make sure that these people get picked up,
40:59go to prison and aren't able to do it again.
41:03I think it's a tragic reflection on society.
41:06People want what they can't have,
41:08and if they can't afford it, they just go out and nick it.
41:14I think the rise in this kind of crime is simply the system so stretched,
41:20and if those people were in prison where they should be,
41:23then this level of offending would come down.
41:31In this episode...
41:32How old are you?
41:34Well?
41:3516.
41:36Pathetic.
41:38You should have learnt, shouldn't you?
41:39You should have stopped.
41:40The young man on the stolen bike,
41:42who led officers on a dangerous pursuit through Derby,
41:45pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking,
41:47failing to stop, dangerous driving,
41:49driving without insurance,
41:51driving whilst disqualified,
41:52and breach of bail conditions.
41:54He's due to appear at court for sentencing.
41:57No further action was taken in relation to suspected drug driving
42:00after tests in custody showed he was under the legal limit.
42:04He's on bail at the minute.
42:06Not failed stop for police on bikes.
42:09Ah, stealing motorbikes.
42:13An investigation to identify the other riders
42:17and recover the remaining stolen bike is ongoing.
42:33The suspect who stole a van full of tools
42:35and fled on foot after being pursued by officers...
42:38Backs onto a massive field.
42:40It went into the garden and then...
42:43It's disappeared.
42:44It could be around here somewhere.
42:46..has not yet been identified.
42:49Do you know anything about a van?
42:51No.
42:51Right, and you don't know anything about tools?
42:53No.
42:54Just open the door, don't worry about it.
42:56Let's have a look.
42:58The man suspected of travelling with the stolen van,
43:01gave voluntary interviews,
43:03and after further investigation,
43:05no action was taken.
43:10To me, that's the boot of a shoplifter.
43:12Absolutely rammed with go-to items of shop thievery.
43:18And the two women...
43:19I've got my seats for all this.
43:21Yeah.
43:22..wanted for shoplifting stopped by Alex.
43:26Can you show me where those seats are on this?
43:28I've seen one of the bags.
43:29In the Sainsbury's bag,
43:30because obviously you've all got your Sainsbury's bag for life there.
43:33..were charged with theft...
43:34No, I can't find it.
43:36..and sent to prison for 39 weeks.
43:43The traffic camps are back new next Friday at eight.
43:47It's England women versus New Zealand
43:49as international T20 cricket returns to five
43:53live tomorrow from two.
