Snapped: Killer Couples - Season 18 Episode 13 - Michelle Hetzel and Brandon Bloss
Transcript
00:12they say time it gets easier and sometimes it doesn't even to this day 24 years later
00:19it still seems like it was yesterday there's no way to describe the pain that a mother could feel
00:26there's just no way the victim's neck was sliced almost to the point of being decapitated
00:35we learned that the night that she disappeared there was a big fight witnesses told us they could
00:41hear banging around in the apartment upstairs they just kept making me repeat my story
00:46you know like so you're angry like you have a bad temper and i'm like yes yes and i'm like
00:53but i
00:53did not kill her it was a very volatile situation there was information that was developed that
01:03then led us more to look at this married couple there always seemed to be an argument about this
01:11one person it was ruining his marriage his life the question was well was she just a witness or did
01:17she help he made allegations that she offered him money and sex to kill him this was a love triangle
01:26with the fatal ending
01:44in the early afternoon of june 15th 2000 a 911 call comes in from the national canal museum
01:52in eastern pennsylvania we have a canal in eastern and there is a museum there on the property but it
01:59has a parking area people can go down there it's a recreational site it's frequented by citizens in
02:07the eastern area there were canal museum employees security type folks for the area that saw these girls in
02:16the parking lot who were hysterical and were screaming there was a suspected death so law enforcement was contacted
02:25i was working a day shift with another detective and we got called to the scene
02:31my lieutenant police lieutenant parkansky also responded
02:37upon arriving at the scene detectives learned michelle hetzel and carrie renner found the victim
02:43who they identify as 19 year old devon guzman
02:48we arrived there michelle and carrie are there crying they're sitting on a stone wall pointing to devon's car
02:56it was a silver pontiac when we looked in the car we saw a young female with a jacket covered
03:06over her
03:07the syringe the syringe was tucked in her waistband they determined that devon guzman is deceased because
03:24the syringe was there there was a thought that she may have committed suicide or there was some kind of
03:32drug overdose
03:36detectives learn carrie renner is devon's roommate and girlfriend she and michelle had reported
03:43devon missing earlier that morning carrie goes on to tell us exactly you know what happened
03:51the night before devon and i were fighting we were throwing things like around the apartment it was just
03:58getting heated so devon left to go down to michelle's house according to carrie devon was going to
04:05michelle hetzel's residence they were friends but then hetzel uh contacts carrie renner and says devon
04:11didn't show up where is she so there was an alert put out to our police department and the other
04:16police
04:16departments michelle and carrie also called the 911 center several times to follow up they were very
04:24concerned about her they just they started driving around looking for her eventually they go to the
04:30canal museum apparently that's a place that was important to devon so they decided that you know
04:35maybe she went there to go for a walk so we pulled in devon's car was there
04:48i walked up to the car and i like looked in and i didn't see her so i'm like michelle
04:53she's not here
04:56and you know michelle kind of gasped put her hand over her mouth and she's like what do you mean
04:59she's
04:59not there um which prompted me to look again and i'm like oh she's sleeping in the back seat
05:08so for some reason i had devon's keys devon had mine i unlocked the door
05:15i noticed that her lips and her eyebrows were purple so i reached and i grabbed onto her jacket
05:21and i shook her and i said baby are you okay she didn't respond so i yelled for michelle to
05:27come so
05:28we could take her to the hospital at that time there was a city worker nearby and he heard what
05:35was going on and he suggested to have the police come so the police show up the ambulance is there
05:41finally one of the medics like just looks over and like shouts that she's dead
05:48i had known devon's father from high school to tell her parents and her family it was heartbreaking
05:57i read one in the afternoon i got a phone call saying that they found her in the back of
06:01her car
06:02and she wasn't with us anymore there's no way to describe the pain that a mother can feel
06:08there's just no way
06:15born in 1981 devon guzman grew up in a tight-knit family in eastern pennsylvania
06:21devon growing up she was she was a tomboy she was oh devon always was a lot of fun
06:29the life of the party you know devon's personality was very bubbly um always happy she was always like
06:38very lively and on the go as a teenager devon became fast friends with carrie renner and michelle
06:46hedzel when i first came to easton uh in 91 i met michelle at the bus stop and we instantly
06:54became
06:54friends then i first met devon through michelle i was a year older than them so i was the only
07:01one
07:01that was driving at the time devon was was carefree you know she had a big heart she had a
07:08wild
07:08imagination everybody that she came in contact with loved her she was just a normal high school
07:15girl went to school again still like the roller skating um hanging with her cousins going to the
07:22football games we just continued to hang out until our friendship you know evolved into a relationship
07:29for the both of us well coming public it was like 1996 and it was not acceptable we were often
07:40judged
07:41you know where we went devon's mom always accepted us it didn't matter to me i mean if that's who
07:49she
07:49was and that's what she wanted out of her life then i loved her anyway it did matter um and
07:56she knew
07:56that devon and carrie seemed happy they never stayed home they were always out go to the park
08:02go for hikes take drives whatever they wanted to do after high school carrie asked devon to move in
08:11with her she just wanted to settle down and she was excited when she finally did get to her own
08:17place
08:18with carrie devon and carrie also briefly talked a little bit about moving to arizona she has family
08:25there uh but you know we were young so um we didn't have money so she had applied for a
08:31sunoco gas
08:32card and so we were waiting for that to come in the mail wherever life was going to take her
08:37she was
08:37going that that was devon now at only 19 years old devon guzman's body has been found in the backseat
08:48of her own car by her girlfriend so first we photographed the scene to make sure we have an
08:55accurate representation of what we see when we arrived and then once we started to move her we
09:01observed a large laceration on her throat the victim's neck was sliced almost to the point of being
09:11decapitated which then immediately suggested that this was the homicide there was a small knife that
09:21was in her hand but that knife was too small to commit those injuries and it was obviously not
09:26possible the sheets let her throat herself due to the severity of the laceration you would have expected
09:34to see a tremendous amount of blood in the car and there was very minimal amount of blood in the
09:40vehicle that car would have been covered with blood but there was very little blood under her
09:45so we know immediately that she was killed somewhere else and then brought to the canal museum
09:53someone tried to stage the body to make it look like a suicide someone was trying to lead law
09:59enforcement or investigators to believe that this was a self-inflicted wound but uh it was amateurish
10:06it appears that the people that were staging this didn't really know what they were doing
10:11well we're kind of looking at michelle and carrie because they report her missing they find her
10:18carrie's the last one to see her we know that with them finding her and it being staged that there's
10:24a possibility that one or both of them are involved in the murder of devin
10:32coming up detectives uncover complex dynamics in devin's love life they are still actively involved
10:40in some kind of a sexual relationship she starts to point out instances where she would get very very
10:47jealous and very upset she would always cause a ruckus and chaos she had had a fight a pretty uh
10:55violent
10:55fight with devin that night before she went missing
11:14hours after 19 year old devin guzman was found murdered in the back of her car detectives asked devin's
11:22girlfriend carrie renner and close friend michelle hetzel to make a formal statement we
11:28were very aware early in this investigation that this was a state scene someone wanted to make it
11:34look like a suicide so the girls are at the scene they're the ones that have found devin uh so
11:41it's
11:42it's imperative that we get a statement from them carrie and michelle went back to the police station
11:48they were interviewed detectives begin their line of questioning with devin's friend michelle
11:56we start to ask her about the relationship that she has with devin we find out michelle and devin knew
12:02each other from school michelle presented herself as sort of a meek and mild young girl and her
12:08statement to the police is that you know devin their friends you know they had a relationship
12:13she said then at one point they were lovers in high school what we learned was that devin had a
12:24sexual relationship with carrie and devin also had a sexual relationship with michelle
12:31michelle acknowledged that the sexual relationship was over that she's with her husband now she's happy
12:37with her husband after high school at some point michelle met brandon bloss and then they got married
12:45michelle was 18 when they got married and brandon was five or six years older than michelle
12:50after learning she and devin were once lovers detectives asked michelle if that caused any known
12:57issues in carrie and devin's relationship michelle said carrie would get very very jealous and very
13:03upset and she starts to point out instances where carrie and devin had domestic arguments she said carrie
13:13was jealous very much of devin's and michelle's relationship because they were still friends
13:22down the hall detectives confront carrie about her relationship with devin
13:27we learned that the night that she disappeared there was a big fight between carrie and devin
13:35devin came home from her father's house and she was wasted she lied about michelle
13:41being there at her dad's house and i was really angry she was really trying to calm me down
13:50but then michelle started paging her she wanted to hang out so michelle was persistent and she kept
13:58paging her and kept paging her devin and i kept fighting um devin was pretty irate at this time
14:08devin wanted to drive down to michelle's house i told her that this makes zero sense you're drunk you're
14:14going to kill yourself if you're going to michelle's and i'll drive it was pretty silent on the ride to
14:23michelle's house because i was beyond being mad and disappointed and angry at devin
14:33so we get to michelle's house and i wait in the car and devin goes over and knocks on the
14:39door and it
14:39took brendan maybe a minute or so to answer the door he saw me in the car and he said
14:45that michelle
14:46doesn't want me around take me home that she didn't want me there so devin was pretty mad she came
14:53back
14:53to the car she punched the hood of the roof while she walked by and she got in the car
15:00the ride home we'd started talking and she did say that she was going to go back
15:06and i still was not happy about that
15:11we get back to the apartment she wanted to walk me up the stairs she went to give me a
15:16kiss so i
15:17turned my head because i was mad and so she kissed my cheek and i said like she told me
15:22she loved me
15:23and i was like whatever and then i walked up the stairs so devin left to go down to michelle's
15:29house
15:29and um i went inside and i went to sleep i woke up to michelle paging me it was probably
15:38about like
15:38midnight now 12 30 and uh she kept paging me and paging me and paging me and calling and calling
15:46so i finally answer the phone and she accuses me of keeping devin against her will she's saying that
15:53devin never showed up i'm like devin's not here and um so she shows up she shows up probably around
16:03like two o'clock or something like that michelle sees that devin's not there and like she's paranoid
16:08and she's worried and she wants me to report her missing carrie did not initially want to call the
16:14911 center she tells us that michelle's the one that's insistent about calling and reporting the missing
16:20person so finally around i don't know maybe three in the morning i gave in and i called the police
16:32michelle hetzel says maybe we ought to call the police and report her a missing person
16:37uh and i think carrie's reluctant to do that so that was suspicious that's why carrie was a focus
16:44of the investigation but carrie claimed she had nothing to do with it detectives circled back to
16:52michelle hetzel who reiterates her concerns about the last time she saw devin and carrie michelle hetzel
17:00is trying to imply in her statement that you know there was a fight between devin and carrie and maybe
17:07she
17:08got hurt there but she she maintains that she never showed back up at her home again
17:13i didn't know at that time but michelle was basically pinning it on me
17:34detectives in easton pennsylvania are beginning to suspect that devin guzman's volatile relationship
17:41with carrie renner may have been the catalyst for devin's murder carrie acknowledged that they
17:47had that she had had a fight a pretty uh violent fight with devin that night uh before she went
17:53missing and so because of that we look at her as a potential suspect but as her interview with police
18:00continues carrie shares a detail about the fight that michelle hetzel failed to mention carrie does
18:09tell us that michelle and devin are still actively involved in some kind of a sexual relationship
18:17which contradicts what michelle told us devin and i were together and we were doing great
18:26and michelle would just always like try to interfere devin was living with carrie
18:32but then would go meet michelle and that would obviously start an argument devin would be sorry
18:41you know when she would come home and then uh you know eventually things would be fine with us
18:48carrie tells us that michelle is a very jealous person when regarding devin that even though she's
18:56married to brandon that you know she's fiercely protective of devin and believes that those two
19:03are going to be together forever carrie tells detectives that devin and michelle had recently
19:11taken a romantic vacation together we find out that devin and michelle had gone to the virgin islands the
19:21trip to the virgin islands occurred shortly before the murder i do remember devin calling me once from
19:31the islands and um i was not pleased i was irate i was told that they exchanged rings i think
19:38it was kind
19:38of just you know teenagers saying like i vow to like be with you kind of thing carrie was very
19:46upset
19:47about that she thought that devin was going to be exclusive with her so she was very upset about
19:53that this relationship was occurring
19:59she came home i'm not sure how things got back to good you know but i just saw a change
20:06in devin um
20:08that she was ready to stop this like teenage trauma of a relationship
20:19so she felt the only way to do that was to for us to get out of easton so we
20:25were going to head to
20:26mesa arizona and i believe that devin was just doing the right thing you know like she really wanted to
20:34grow following their interviews detectives release both michelle and carrie there was no arrest uh they
20:42came in voluntarily they're free to go they both denied being involved in the murder i mean law
20:49enforcement this is not unusual we start hearing different stories uh we have to start to compare
20:54notes and find out who's telling the truth after the interviews we're kind of looking at carrie she's
21:00still a suspect at that point carrie's the last one to see her carrie is there when we find her
21:06they had a fight just before devin left so we applied for a search warrant within hours detectives
21:14conduct the search of devin and carrie's apartment inside it looked like there were obvious signs of
21:23some kind of confrontation or disturbance furniture that had been tossed um it just looked like there
21:30was some kind of fight there during the execution of that search warrant we locate a car mat in the
21:37shower which is would probably indicate that somebody was trying to wash something off that
21:44that's when it gets into the use of luminol luminol is a chemical that reacts to any type of blood
21:53and we
21:54found some blood residue uh on that car well at that time we're thinking carrie must have dropped
22:02some blood on the car mat while she was staging her body in the back of the car this might
22:08be evidence
22:08that devin guzman was murdered here the blood goes to the lab and we have to wait till we get
22:13the result
22:14to find out what's going on but that was one of the reasons why we were looking at carrie early
22:20on
22:22with physical evidence secured detectives begin canvassing the neighborhood she and devin lived
22:29over top of a bar and we ended up talking to the bartender and some other patrons who told us
22:36that
22:36the night of the murder they could hear banging around in the apartment upstairs where devin and carrie
22:42lived so because of that you know we look at her as maybe she did harm later to devin when
22:50detectives
22:50returned to the station they discover prior reports connected to the couple's relationship
22:57she and devin lived in forks township there were several police calls to the forks township police
23:03department where they would have sometimes violent physical domestics their relationship was very
23:10volatile we're not solely focused on carrie but carrie is in my opinion she was the primary suspect at that
23:28time
23:30authorities in eastern pennsylvania have zeroed in on carrie renner as the primary suspect in her
23:38girlfriend devin guzman's murder on june 17 2000 detectives bring carrie back to the station to
23:46confront her with the evidence it was two days after she died and it just like went on and on
23:53for
23:53what seemed like the entire day you know they just kept making me repeat my story and i kept saying
23:59it i kept saying the same thing and they're like so you're angry like you have a bad temper and
24:04i'm
24:04like yes yes and i'm like but i did not kill her so it's quite terrifying finally i stand up
24:12and i'm like
24:13are you going to arrest me or can i leave and so they say well you could have left hours
24:18ago
24:21even though we didn't find anything conclusive we requested that carrie take a polygraph exam and
24:31she did several days later she passed and uh focused and went away from her pretty much
24:42the night before we buried him and my son derek and i when we spoke to carrie
24:47and at one point he just kind of looked her in the eye and said you
24:53you see these eyes these are my sister's eyes too you look at me and tell me you didn't kill
24:59her
25:02he cares that i swear to god i didn't hurt her i didn't kill her
25:09my gut feeling was telling me that she didn't do it
25:13i don't know what i'm just gonna do it
25:14later that day detectives receive an unexpected call that puts devon's alleged lover michelle hetzel
25:21back in the spotlight we get some information by an individual by the name of george vine
25:28who goes on to tell us that he knows michelle and devon he was a friend of theirs and they
25:36took an
25:36affinity to going over to his place and hanging out i think that they would have alcohol there
25:46according to george michelle had recently made an alarming proposition he made allegations that michelle
25:55offered him money and sex to kill devon we asked george why he didn't you know talk to us sooner
26:03about
26:03this and he tells us that you know he didn't really believe that she was sincere that he thought
26:08she was just drunk and just talking until devon's found at the canal museum on june 21st six days after
26:17devon was found murdered detectives set up surveillance outside michelle hetzel's home
26:23where she lives with her husband brandon bloss we wanted physical evidence and so we're watching these
26:30people now and uh watching them take the trash out one day once somebody's garbage can is put out
26:37where it's available to the public we can seize that trash without a search warrant well this detective did
26:44he did what was known as a garbage pool what he found in the garbage was gauze pads that had
26:52been used
26:52over a wound and even to the normal person looking at it it looked like a bite mark
27:03so we we apply for a search warrant to search brandon and michelle's house
27:07the search warrant's granted we execute the search warrant inside the house there was a washer
27:14that there was some clothes and that were still wet we find a pair of jeans um inside the washing
27:23machine we've had some blood during the examination of the jeans that was seized from michelle and
27:30brandon's house we found a needle cap inside the one pants pocket there was a needle cap that was that
27:37was consistent with the syringe that was found on the body of the victim so now we're starting to
27:44tell not only some of the things that michelle's told us almost everything that michelle told us
27:52coming up as the investigation shifts forensic evidence solidifies the case against a surprising suspect
28:01he told us that it was a human bite mark we exhumed her body and did a casting of her
28:08teeth
28:10and authorities pinpoint the motive they both cooperated and conspired together
28:16to kill this poor young girl i guess love does crazy things to you
28:35just days after devin guzman was found brutally murdered detectives have discovered possible
28:41evidence connecting her close friend and alleged married lover michelle hetzel to devin's murder
28:50in the house i didn't recover those jeans and that's when the cap to the syringe was found
28:58that was only a small piece but it helped put the whole puzzle together we also found some some blood
29:05uh residue in the backyard there was blood on a hose i would suggest that maybe blood is being washed
29:11away
29:12as a result of a of a crime so this is all circumstantial evidence uh that a crime may have
29:18been committed at this location as a forensic team continues their work detectives speak with neighbors
29:25of michelle hetzel and brandon gloss and that's when we came up with a witness joe welsh who lived
29:32across the street they seemed like a nice young couple michelle was fairly outgoing and would wave
29:40to our two little sons at the time brandon seemed more reserved just typical neighbors across the street
29:48as we got later into the spring and into the summer there seemed to be much more tension between brandon
29:54and michelle there were several particularly explosive incidents getting into the early june
30:00time frame there always seemed to be an argument about this one person who i now know was devin gluesman
30:09and he explains to us that he hears a pretty graphic and heated argument
30:15at brandon at brandon and michelle's house the night that devin went missing
30:22michelle came home and brandon was shouting from inside the house just berating her
30:31and michelle got down on the sidewalk in almost a prayer stance and started shouting what the f do you
30:41want from me what the f do you want from me joe tells detectives that the couple eventually returned
30:48inside 12 35 that morning i was awoken by the disturbance shouting and i looked out and it was
30:58one woman with her back to me and then two people inside the house
31:05basically telling her that she couldn't be in the house and i then saw the woman that i now know
31:13to
31:13be devin slam her fist on the hood of the car
31:18and she got in her car and she left
31:23joe welsh tells us at some point a little later that he sees devin's car come back
31:29joe welsh was an important witness because he was able to verify that devin had been there
31:35and left and then came back again which was consistent with carrie renner's story
31:39and according to hetzel uh that never occurred so we knew right away michelle
31:44lied through her teeth about that with the couple's home being the possible crime scene
31:50detectives focus on brandon to find out what he knows
31:55so we're aware that brandon is involved in this argument with michelle with devin so we asked
32:04brandon to come in for an interview brandon was a very quiet individual he appeared very intelligent
32:12no criminal history he was a college educated person he had a degree in chemistry so he was a very
32:20bright
32:21guy he met michelle when they were very young fell in love with michelle and uh ends up marrying michelle
32:31detectives confront brandon about his wife's on again off again affair with devin and he admits
32:38that it had made him uncomfortable michelle took devin to the virgin islands and used brandon's credit card
32:46so you know brandon is very very upset and very angry about this but he said that he had faith
32:53that
32:54michelle was going to change and be a real wife to him brandon maintains that neither he nor michelle
33:00had anything to do with devin's murder eventually then we get search warrants to get dna and photograph
33:10brandon he's forced to show us his arms and uh when he does uh very visible bite marks on his
33:18arm
33:22he said that there was some kind of fight going on between michelle and and uh devin and he tried
33:28to
33:28break it up and got bit we didn't really believe brandon at the time of brandon's interview we did not
33:34have enough to charge anyone so he was allowed to leave so brandon and michelle's car is impounded
33:41it's made part of the crime scene it's photographed and ultimately a search warrant is issued in order
33:46to find out if there's any evidence that might be helpful in the case inside the trunk we find a
33:55bloody
33:55sweatshirt it's a that's an excel we find uh men's sneakers that have blood on them they were sent away
34:06to the state police crime lab at this point the evidence is really piling up so we are fairly sure
34:14that brandon now is involved in this we asked on dentologists to look at the injury to brandon's arm
34:24and he told us that he believed that it was a human bite mark we believed that it was devin
34:32that bit him
34:34but we had to take a bite mark impression from devin's teeth to be 100 sure unfortunately she had
34:41been buried by that time we applied for a quarter to exhume her body i believe the family you know
34:48was very upset about it but they understood that the need for it we exhumed her body and did a
34:54casting
34:55of her teeth the casting of her teeth along with the detailed photographs that were taken from brandon's
35:03arm were sent to a forensic odontologist
35:09it was nearly a perfect match
35:14brandon is right-handed if he came up from behind her and put her in like a chokehold position
35:21it would have been in the spot where she would have bit him
35:26the bite mark to brandon's arm would suggest that devin put up a fight
35:33then the question was well was michelle just a witness to brandon killing her or did she help
35:53authorities have discovered evidence that connects 25-year-old brandon gloss to the murder of devin
36:00guzman detectives suspect that brandon's wife michelle hetzel also played a role so we believe that
36:08Michelle's involved because somebody had to drive Devin's car to the Canal Museum and then pick somebody up.
36:16So it would suggest that two people were involved.
36:20And Michelle lied about lots of things in terms of this whole case.
36:26Plus, the fact that she tried to hire a hitman just a short time prior to that showed a motive
36:32to want to kill Devin.
36:36In August of 2000, nearly two months after the murder, authorities received promising results from the crime lab.
36:45We eventually received the report on the DNA from the blood on the clothing that we found in their car,
36:52and it was confirmed that it was Devin's blood.
36:56During the examination of the genes that were seized from Michelle and Brandon's washing machine, the blood was diluted to
37:03the point where they could not do any more processing with that.
37:08The forensic report officially clears Devin's girlfriend, Carrie Renner, as a suspect.
37:15The blood that was found in Carrie and Devin's shower, it turned out that it was not Devin's.
37:22It was determined not to be relevant.
37:25We now have a puzzle that is being put together by circumstantial evidence.
37:29The victims bit this man.
37:31We have statements, you know, by George Vine that Michelle was trying to do harm to the victim.
37:40And we have motive that Brandon Bloss wasn't happy with what was going on with Devin and his wife.
37:47Michelle was definitely obsessed with Devin.
37:50She would get very upset and angry when Devin would bounce back and forth between her and Carrie.
37:58Carrie, we believe that Devin probably told her that, look, you know, we're done.
38:03I'm going to go with Carrie.
38:05And Michelle being angry, saying, you know, if I can't have her, no one's going to have her.
38:11And probably went to Brandon and said, look, if you help me do this, this will save our marriage.
38:15So that's what we think the motive was.
38:22My theory is that they lured Devin over there with the intent to kill her.
38:29That Brandon probably came up behind her, put his arm around her neck, start to choke her out, slit her
38:38throat.
38:44Then they both carried her out back, put her in a car, drove down to the Canal Museum, which was
38:51a short distance away from their house, set up the crime scene, and then come back and make up this
38:56story as they didn't see her, and then go from there.
39:00We never found the murder weapon.
39:01The murder weapon, the knife, could have been dumped in the water.
39:07The current can be pretty strong in the waters in that location.
39:16Nearly one month after Devin Guzman was murdered, authorities issue arrest warrants for Michelle Hetzel and Brandon Bloss.
39:25They were charged with criminal homicide and criminal conspiracy to commit homicide, and we took them into custody.
39:33When I found out that they were arrested, I'm not really sure how I felt.
39:38I didn't feel relieved.
39:40I didn't feel content.
39:42You know, she didn't like Carrie and Devin being happy.
39:44So she would always cause a ruckus and chaos.
39:48I never thought she'd go that far, of course.
39:51No one ever thought she'd go that far as to, you know, kill my daughter.
39:59Michelle and Brandon refused to talk, so we could not interview them.
40:04Prosecutors decide to try the couple together.
40:09Opening arguments get underway on September 25th, 2001.
40:14We felt we had a strong case, but it wasn't a slam dunk.
40:17We had no confessions.
40:18It was not going to be easy.
40:19And we argued to the jury that both cooperated and conspired together to kill this poor young girl
40:26and then plant her body down at the Canal Museum.
40:30Prosecutors argue Michelle's jealousy, combined with Brandon's fear of losing his wife, culminated in murder.
40:39I think that Brandon just had enough of Devin Guzman's involvement with Michelle.
40:44I think that he was tired of her.
40:46I think that, you know, he was ruining his marriage and his life.
40:50Brandon was just madly in love with her.
40:52And he was tired of her always leaving to go to Devin.
40:59Michelle was always manipulative.
41:01She convinced him, you know, if you just get rid of Devin, she's the issue, you know, then we can
41:08be happy.
41:10And I guess love does crazy things to you.
41:15This was a love triangle with a fatal ending.
41:19There's no question that Michelle Hetzel manipulates people.
41:22She's a pathological liar.
41:25Michelle and Brandon at the trial, they just sat there.
41:29They had no emotion.
41:31And they were pointing a finger at each other.
41:35So they blamed each other for it.
41:39On October 4th, 2001, the jury deliberates the couple's fate.
41:46Just after midnight, they reach a verdict.
41:49The verdict was guilty of homicide, first-degree murder.
41:55My whole family was grateful that they convicted both of them.
41:59And it was a feeling of relief.
42:03This crime was a tragedy for the community.
42:07You know, Devin was well-loved by a lot of people.
42:11They say time gets easier, and sometimes it doesn't.
42:15Even to this day, 24 years later, it still seems like it was yesterday.
42:22This whole thing ruined many, many lives.
42:27You know, it changed my life.
42:29You know, I have amazing kids.
42:31I had an amazing career in the Army.
42:33And, um, some days it's hard to be happy.
42:37And I believe that's because, like, I've only ever really loved Devin.
42:43And I still keep her presence strong in my everyday life.
43:01And I believe that's because, like, I don't know what he's done for me.
43:01And I believe that's because, like, I don't know what he's done for me.
43:02You
