Who is more important to their team than Ausar Thompson?
Transcript
00:02thank you update kid i you know i'm not even really workshopping the theory i just said it
00:07assar thompson's the most important young player in all the droid sports
00:12which may be it may be true it may be true if he develops and and adds it becomes a
00:19serious
00:19offensive threat you know it can completely change this team and obviously there are other
00:25moves that could be made but there's a huge offseason for assar and and pouring everything
00:31he's got professionally into trying to develop more of an offensive game um but you you think
00:38there are others case can be made for others all right what do you got i mean just i read
00:42something
00:42to you before the show or maybe it was during the first break uh about michael brancic knee guard
00:47for the red wing prospect who you know finished up the season with the red wings then went to uh
00:52to grand rapids to play for the griffins in the playoffs and led them in goals i believe he had
00:57like five or six goals in the playoffs before they got knocked out as soon as they got knocked out
01:02he joins team norway in the world championships in his first game there he has a couple goals
01:09um so hopefully he's finding his offensive game everybody says the same thing about him playing
01:14at grand rapids is that he plays a little bit of a snarl he's decent size could add some more
01:20weight
01:20but i think he's like a 6'2 guy um but is it possible that i mean is this guy
01:25important for
01:26this team's future absolutely he is because red wings need to have one of these guys that they
01:30picked develop and be a guy right nate danielson doesn't know we don't know if he's got enough
01:35offensive upside to be the guy he seems to be great defensively but is the offensive part of his game
01:41there i don't know but brancic knee guard is one who will compete and probably make this roster
01:47in the offseason um but he's the guy just for the red wings like he has to be somebody
01:52he played last year in 14 games and had one point yeah and and you put him in these other
01:58other you know levels and he looks like he could be a dominant player marco casper right is is i've
02:05picked on marco casper but it's really a roundabout way at getting at steve eisenman they needed marco
02:10casper to have 90 points not 19 and and that's he it's totally yeah it's totally unfair because
02:17he's 22 years old yeah these guys are so young and yet now's the time to start contributing
02:23i mean for casper okay take a big step be a 40 point guy all right it's it's really a
02:28criticism
02:28it's not a criticism of casper it's a criticism of of eisenman and but but looking for the next guy
02:34like brancic knee guard has tons of offensive upside more than anybody else probably in the system
02:39so is that the guy who will play for the red wings this next season that's a guy for the
02:45red wings
02:45you look at the tigers i mean young guys a huge season to try to okay yeah you immediately go
02:52to
02:52the bats and think who's that guy and we've mentioned a bunch of the guys are at toledo
02:57whatever is you know max clark going to be that guy next year for this team not going to be
03:01there this
03:02year um i just don't expect him to be much for contributing to maybe late later in the season
03:07unless he gets on a tear at toledo but he's hitting 268 at toledo that is a 733 ops it's
03:13okay
03:13but if he starts to hit balls out of the park if those line drives turn into home runs now
03:18he finds the gaps and all of a sudden ops creeps up past 800 well then look out this guy's
03:24probably
03:24going to have a chance but max clark is probably the guy for the tigers when you're talking about
03:27hitters but the other guy who doesn't get any talk really ago except for i mean we've mentioned
03:32him a few times it's troy melton well couldn't wait to get him back and then he comes back pitches
03:38on sunday and he's lights out great the fastball going at 98 miles an hour and we start thinking
03:45about okay if we have life without scuba what does it look like does it look so bad if if
03:50knocking on
03:51wood right you got troy melton who's pitching well if casey mize has figured things out and can stay
03:56healthy you got him you know good framber valdez pitches 70 of the time he's great 30 he sucks but
04:05the the 70 i'll take the 70 you got that going okay that that works well and then you start
04:11thinking
04:11is jackson job going to come back like i'm not worried about the pitching as much thankfully
04:15because troy melton please stay healthy but he could be the real deal the next big guy we're talking about
04:22on this team i developed an entire topic about him yesterday that we'll get to and i want to ask
04:26you
04:26this question coming up at 11 20 as we'll shift into some tiger talk for the lions is it tate
04:32ratledge
04:32that if he develops into a dominant player well or is it blake miller is it blake miller or is
04:39it
04:39derrick moore because they they moved up to get derrick moore as the edge rusher and you know if he
04:48ends
04:48up being the guy that shuts everybody up about the whole edge rusher position us included to various
04:55degrees and we want cam jordan here and all that right but if derrick moore is the guy who steps
04:59in
05:00and looks great from day one are we all sudden step to sitting back and maybe rubbing our hands again
05:05oh here we go now we got that other guy i mean it it certainly is a lot riding on
05:12him i'll tell you
05:12there is a player with the lions that is i think probably in some people's eyes they are probably
05:20already starting to move beyond this player but i'm not giving up on terry on arnold and i know
05:28that between the injuries and the off off field stuff he needs some good luck with injuries and he
05:35might need a little bit of grow up uh because whatever he's guilty of and i don't know what
05:40it appears as though he can use like some quiet away away from the field time and and and just
05:47you know that it just be a professional and and because the lions don't put up with a lot of
05:53nonsense anymore it's an organization that's done a really good job in it and you know i i guess when
05:59i read accounts of what happened i'm not sure his degree of fault in anything that happened but
06:05there's something to be said for being in the situation in the first place yeah and and so terry
06:09and arnold the story it's kind of hard to follow it is kind of hard to follow yes but i
06:13i would put him
06:13as a young player that there's still a lot riding on his development i go back to assar though he's
06:19the most important i think he's the most important i'm not saying you're wrong i'm just saying i think
06:23it's it's interesting because i think with each team you've got and maybe it's just each team you've
06:27got guys that you're expecting to step up or any of them on the same level that assar is because
06:31assar is already proving his worth on the team right now and he's so young in his career you know
06:38he's a defensive player of the year candidate but if he gives something offensively it really
06:44uncaps what what his trajectory is as a player in the league 2 4 8 5 3 9 97 97
06:49if you've got
06:50anybody else that belongs on the list of the most important young players in detroit um you know and
06:57it was it i can't remember it was you or kang that came up with the blake griffin stat
07:02that blake griffin was like not a three punch was kang thank you what was that exactly do you remember
07:07off the top of your head um oh gator took the deep dive after i mentioned down in the air
07:11but
07:11basically he came into the league not as a three-point threat at all he would take maybe
07:15not even one three-pointer a game for the first several years in the league and at some point he
07:19had to just start developing a three-pointer where by the end of his career i think he was shooting
07:23about seven three-pointers a game and making them on a pretty consistent basis especially for a power
07:27forward and my point was you can still develop that especially when other parts of your game goes
07:32away and for blake griffin that isolated i just thought like that is not talked about enough
07:36with blake griffin how he transformed his game from beyond a dunker to an actual threat outside
07:41the first six years of his career he averaged less than one three-point attempt per game and
07:46when he was all-star in the first five years of his career after that it jumped up to 1
07:51.9 then it
07:52jumped up to 5.6 when he got traded to the pistons and then was you know hovering around seven
07:59for the
08:00next couple of seasons and knocking him down at a pretty good rate you know with the pistons
08:04in that first year when he made it with the pistons in 17 in the 2018 once he got traded
08:09to us
08:10he shot uh 35 from three then we jumped up to 36 percent the next year and made the all
08:18-star team
08:19what was he at the beginning of his career what was his percentage when he just wasn't shooting three
08:2429 then 12 then 18 and up to 27 and in 67 games it was 40 but it was it
08:34was a half a three-point
08:35attempt per game he just only not it's an example it's just an example about how that's a part of
08:40your game that can be improved and actually improve pretty dramatically um and not everybody's going
08:45to have that that gear i'm sure there's a lot of players that work on their shot work on their
08:49shot
08:49work on their shot and never can develop it to be a real threat at the nba level it's a
08:55tough place
08:55to develop and it sounds so easy oh just develop just work on a shot just have a shot well
09:00what's
09:00crazy is that's like the most fun part of the game i think it's the most fun part of the
09:05game is
09:06you're gonna tell me as a kid basket yeah we need you to just start to taking more shots and
09:11see if
09:11you can develop okay i get to shoot a thousand shots a day sounds great that's a pretty nice off
09:17season great at the stuff that isn't fun right you need to work on your lateral quickness ah
09:26crap i mean that's that's he excels in that stuff we need to build up your stamina oh come on
09:34i want you to run around like a madman on the other end of the floor so you can get
09:39the basketball
09:40and then take the basketball and give it to a teammate that's not the stuff people go
09:45he's great at that tell me i can work on ball handling and shooting yeah yeah that's the fun
09:50stuff is there anybody else any other young athlete in detroit that's more important to
09:54their team than a star thompson 248-539-9797 tiger question for gator at 1120 you're on 971
10:00and i'm going to be in the middle of the
10:00book you've been out of the out of themir Kitchen
