00:00As much as I am a fan of Helmet House of Pain, we've got to get some appropriate Scottish music
00:05here.
00:05We've got to get like...
00:07Somebody over the weekend told me Annie Lennox. I didn't know she was Scottish, so we played some Annie Lennox.
00:11We'll ask Kat. I don't know if she identifies with her.
00:13How about the gentleman that was supposed to be singing in San Diego this weekend and then apparently said he
00:19was sick and was found at Boston Stadium, Mr. Rod Stewart?
00:23So maybe the person who can comment on that is our good friend Kat Harvey from Scotland STV Radio.
00:29She is here covering the Tartan army who have absolutely taken over the city of Boston over the last several
00:37days.
00:37How are you still standing? You guys have obviously been hitting it hard.
00:40I'm not. That's why I need this chair.
00:43I can't even... It's just like a fever dream how mental this place has been.
00:48Listen to my voice. I've gone all kind of like, you know, like one of the phone line numbers there.
00:54That's what it sounds like.
00:55You pay for that. Are you enjoying this?
00:56Yeah.
00:58Turn up the base.
00:59It's just been the most surreal few days, but it's been absolutely incredible.
01:04It's what sport's all about, isn't it?
01:05Kat, you don't know how, like, everyone's saying that this was the perfect city for you guys to come to.
01:12I told you that the last time I was on because, like, I've been to Boston once before and I
01:16know you like to party.
01:18You have amazing bars. You like just chatting to people.
01:22You're quite chatty. And that's us to tea.
01:25And we have just we've fallen in love with Boston.
01:27Yeah.
01:27And I think it's fair to say that Boston has also fallen in love with the Tartan army.
01:31We have no choice.
01:32It's been great. I mean, first of all, there's been so many moments that have been caught online that have,
01:36you know, gone viral.
01:37That have been very funny.
01:37One of my favorites is someone from the Tartan army showed up with a bagpipe and went on this thing
01:42that we call the cop slide.
01:44There is a famous slide that was where this this police officer went down and he had like a gun
01:49on him and someone.
01:51And the video where you can just see the bottom of the slide and all of a sudden you see
01:55the bagpipe come through.
01:57It's just perfection.
01:58Was he wearing a kilt as well?
01:59Because that.
02:00Oh, yeah, yeah.
02:02That might not be.
02:02Got a heart a bit.
02:04Oh, well, we had Jackson talk to someone outside of Fenway Park on Friday who was bragging about we don't
02:10wear nothing under these kilts.
02:11And I'm like, well, don't be doing jumping jacks.
02:13Well, that's the thing.
02:14If you ask a Scotsman what's worn under the kilt, they always say nothing.
02:18It's in perfect working order.
02:20Perfect.
02:21All right.
02:21So I want to you know, I want to know what your weekend has been like since we last talked
02:26to you, which was on Thursday.
02:27Take me through what has happened during those days.
02:30OK, so on Friday, I ended up at the big fundraiser party.
02:35The Tartan Army put it on.
02:37It's a kind of there's a charity in Scotland called Street Soccer and they raise money for people that are
02:44like homeless or they need purpose.
02:46And it's through football.
02:48So it's through sport to give them a boost for the mental health and stuff.
02:52And it raised two million dollars in one night.
02:55Really?
02:55Two million dollars in one night.
02:57So there was lots of people that were there and that were famous.
03:00Susan Boyle was meant to be there singing, but she wasn't well.
03:02OK.
03:03I mean, she probably popped up at the game with Rod Stewart.
03:05I don't know.
03:06So anyway, so I can I just say something?
03:09Two million dollars.
03:10There are like huge organizations that that all year prepare for like these big balls and stuff in town, like
03:16big galas.
03:17And they don't raise two million dollars.
03:19Yeah, it's nuts.
03:20I mean, so the Yarrow Foundation is the people that put it on and they obviously have friends like Gerard
03:24Butler was there.
03:26And I ended up and the first minister of Scotland, who's like the most important politician.
03:32Sure.
03:32And like I'm not famous enough to get into that.
03:36So I always scam my way in somehow.
03:38Hell yeah.
03:39So look like you know what you're doing and you'll get it.
03:41A couple of years ago at the Euros, I went in as the Bay City rulers tambourine player.
03:47And this time Johnny Mac, who plays with the Bay City rulers, was doing a slot.
03:52He was playing guitar and I went in as a singer.
03:56So you know the song, Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, that the Tartan Army have been singing everywhere.
04:00Yeah, yeah.
04:01So he said that I had to sing that.
04:03And now I am a very average karaoke singer at best.
04:07But if you apply with enough Prosecco, I think I'm amazing.
04:11So yeah, I ended up singing in front of Jenner Butler on Friday night, which is probably why my voice
04:16is like that.
04:16Oh my gosh.
04:17Okay, so that was Friday.
04:19That was Friday.
04:20Yeah.
04:20And then, you know, Saturday I was over by Boston Common.
04:24And what's great is that, you know, there was a lot of time to kill before everyone was going to
04:28the train station, which was kind of a clusterf, to be quite honest.
04:30But right in Boston Common, I've learned three things about the Scots.
04:35Number one, they sing a lot, even when they're not at games.
04:38All the time.
04:39They sing a lot.
04:40Number two, they never seem to get tired.
04:42Like, it's like the energy is off the charts.
04:45I genuinely see if I was to show you my Fitbit, you would send me straight to accident and emergency.
04:50It is ridiculous.
04:51I have not slept in four days.
04:53I don't doubt it.
04:54So yeah, but we just, as I said, we're super excited.
04:56This is our first time at a World Cup in 28 years.
05:00It's awesome.
05:00We've got a lot of making up to do.
05:02Oh, yeah.
05:02Oh, and by the way, the other thing, I learned that they are fascinated by our marijuana delivery ads.
05:07Oh, yeah.
05:07The amount of Scottish people in kilts I saw taking pictures of the ads on the side of, like, trash
05:12cans.
05:12So is that legal here?
05:14Oh, yeah.
05:14Weed's legal.
05:14All right.
05:15So it's not legal in Scotland, so that'll be why.
05:17Well, enjoy yourself.
05:19Have yourself a good time.
05:20It hasn't been legal long.
05:21Maybe like 10 years, I think.
05:23Oh, right.
05:23No.
05:24Perfectly legal.
05:24Absolutely.
05:25Oh, yes.
05:25Because it does smell.
05:26The city does smell quite often.
05:28Oh, yeah.
05:28But, you know, you can eat gummies.
05:30Yes, edibles.
05:31Edibles.
05:31You'll be perfectly fine.
05:32Okay, so let's talk about Saturday.
05:35Let's talk about the game itself, you know, getting there.
05:38Okay.
05:39Out front of the game.
05:40Like, just kind of take me through what that day was like.
05:41So this is where it gets a little bit serious.
05:43Okay.
05:44And I'm not – it was horrendous.
05:47Oh, yeah.
05:47It was horrendous.
05:48Okay.
05:49I've covered football for over 30 years, and that's the worst stadium situation I've ever had.
05:53And you know what's crazy is that, you know, this is when – from us who – you know, Ted
05:59played at Gillette Stadium.
06:00So, like, from the outside looking in, even locals were going, what are they doing?
06:06Because that's not the way people get into Patriots games when the Patriots play there.
06:10What did go wrong then?
06:11What –
06:11So, a couple of things.
06:13First of all, there was a huge parking lot.
06:15I'm sure you noticed that they weren't letting people park in for some reason.
06:19It was like an empty parking lot, which a ton more people could have been there.
06:23The other thing was, is weren't they using limited entrances?
06:26Because it seemed like you were in a crowd.
06:27It seemed like too many in one entrance.
06:28I don't know which –
06:29So we ended up going in gate two.
06:32Yeah.
06:32And that was the one, I think, having seen all the stories afterwards that had the most problems.
06:37And it was basically at one point – and everyone went, oh, you must have gone, you know, all at
06:42the same time.
06:42We didn't.
06:43Yeah.
06:43I had friends that went three hours before kickoff and friends that went an hour before kickoff.
06:48And I went two hours before kickoff.
06:49Yeah.
06:49And I got stuck in this little pocket of people.
06:52And when I say little pocket, that's a lie.
06:54It was probably a good 2,000 folk trying to get in one gate.
06:58Yeah.
06:59They got to fix that.
06:59With nobody, no barriers.
07:03So it was like – it was a squash.
07:04It was a crush waiting to happen.
07:06Yeah, yeah.
07:06And it's probably only the second time in my entire life I felt scared at a football game.
07:10So, Kat, that's FIFA.
07:12Yeah.
07:12And I know that because I went down a kind of rabbit hole to find out why it was such
07:17a disaster.
07:18Yeah, yeah.
07:18But that was it.
07:20So I'm hoping that somebody sat down and worked out the logistics for our next game on Friday.
07:25I hope so, Kat, because there was – because now they've got it down to – it's really easy, actually,
07:30to get in because they've got these scanners that basically scan you when you go in.
07:34So, like, security-wise, you're all set.
07:36Here's the thing.
07:37So you don't get wanded?
07:38You don't get wanded?
07:38Well, they got so overwhelmed by the amount of people trying to get in one gate, they just randomly opened
07:44it.
07:44And everybody went through.
07:46So not one of us went through a scanner.
07:47Wow.
07:47Oh, jeez.
07:48After all that.
07:49Bag never got checked.
07:51Really?
07:51Nothing.
07:52Yeah.
07:52So my two-liter bottle of vodka was fine.
07:55Good plenty.
07:56A-OK.
07:57That's a win.
07:57All right.
07:58I'm really joking.
07:58But the thing was, once you're inside, it's an amazing stadium.
08:01It was just brilliant.
08:02Yeah.
08:03And everybody we met, it wasn't their fault.
08:05Yeah.
08:05It was a logistical thing that needs fixed for the next game.
08:08It does.
08:09It does.
08:09And I don't know how much faith I have that they're going to do it because I think that locally
08:14it's out of their hands.
08:15There's these rules and regulations that FIFA has put out there.
08:17Also, the trains there, terrible queues.
08:21One broke down, the air conditioning broke down.
08:23The car park on the way back.
08:25Took us two and a half hours to get out of the car park.
08:27Oh.
08:28So.
08:29That's normal.
08:30We're used to that.
08:31That's normal.
08:32Right.
08:32OK.
08:33But we still love you guys.
08:34My God, the anthem alone before that match was goosebumps.
08:38Just watching it on social media, what was it like in the stadium to have that?
08:41So, I'll not lie, I had a little tear in my eye because my dad passed away a few years
08:46ago and he was the one that took me to Scotland Games.
08:48And if you hear that anthem, it's one of these ones that just gets you.
08:52And here's the best part about this.
08:55It was officially, oh, you've got it.
08:57Oh, don't.
08:58You're going to set me up.
08:59Oh.
09:03Wow.
09:06Oh, listen to that.
09:11You're setting me up.
09:13You're actually crying.
09:14You're crying right now.
09:16So, yeah, my dad took me to Scotland Games when I was wee and he passed away.
09:20And, like, again, he had, you know, 28 years since the last World Cup.
09:24You know, I kind of feel him with me and all that.
09:26And that, there's so many people there.
09:28But officially, and this is the best, but I don't know if you've heard this, but officially, it's the loudest
09:33noise.
09:34It's the loudest noise that's ever been at a World Cup because they record the decibel levels.
09:38Oh, yeah.
09:38So, 125 it hit, which is officially the loudest noise that's ever been at a World Cup.
09:44It's been the past Saturday that it was recorded.
09:47Yeah.
09:47That was the loudest.
09:47That anthem right there.
09:48I mean, I believe it.
09:49Just every clip that people took there, you could just hear it so crystal clear.
09:53So, we might not win the World Cup, but we've got that.
09:55Oh, yeah.
09:56Oh, yeah.
09:56Oh, yeah.
09:56Oh, yeah.
09:56Oh, yeah.
