National evening forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey
Transcript
00:00Hello there, a very good evening to you. Hope you've managed to have a lovely weekend, although I'm sure many of us probably retreated to indoor activities at some point today, with the rain that's been sweeping its way north-eastwards.
00:11It is still pushing across Scotland this evening, and we'll be heading towards the Northern Isles overnight.
00:16A few clearer spells for a time behind that, but our next area of showers will be moving in from the west later on in the night.
00:23These could be heavy and squally, maybe even with some hail and thunder in the mixture.
00:27Amongst all of this, it will be a fairly mild night for most, some of us even holding up around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius,
00:34but a touch chillier for parts of north-eastern Scotland, underneath the clearest of skies, and some very sheltered valleys may get close towards that freezing mark.
00:44We could still see a few rumbles of thunder on that system as it pushes through first thing on Monday, so do be aware of that when you're heading to work.
00:51But certainly for parts of Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland, Northern England, seeing some decent sunny spells throughout the day.
00:56A few outbreaks of rain potentially still lingering for parts of southern England and Wales, and the cloud here will certainly be building, with much greyer skies to end the day.
01:06Temperatures overall ranging between 9 and 14 degrees Celsius, but there will be a breeze around for many of us as well.
01:13As we head into the overnight periods into Tuesday, our attention is certainly going to turn to this area of low pressure
01:19that's been spinning its way up in the Atlantic and is going to be heading towards the UK, bringing some very heavy outbreaks of rain and some quite strong winds as those ice bars really start to squeeze together.
01:30As a result, both rain and wind warnings have been issued.
01:34Those rain warnings then, remember it's coming in from the southwest, so our first one is for parts of southwestern England and Wales for Monday evening,
01:41and another one for northern England into the early hours of Tuesday morning, particularly over higher ground.
01:47So the likes of Dartmoor, Banabalhainiog, Eirri and the Cumbrian Fells, we could see 60 to 80 millimetres of rain falling.
01:55And considering the saturated ground that we've got at the moment because of the wet weather we've had over the last couple of months,
02:01that could certainly lead to flooding and some disruption in places with transport delays possible.
02:06The wind warnings, our first one again for parts of western Wales and southwestern England coming into play on Monday night,
02:15and then our next one for parts of northwest Scotland that will come into force during Tuesday afternoon and currently lasts until Wednesday morning.
02:24Gales, severe gales, will initially push their way through the Irish Sea and then focus their way up towards parts of northwestern Scotland
02:31where we could see 70 mile an hour gusts of wind at time.
02:35Certainly there will be large waves around these coastal regions and again potential disruption to ferry services and other transport portions at times.
02:44We'll play that through on the weather graphics for you starting on Monday evening with that rain beginning to come across parts of southwestern England and Wales,
02:52sweeping its way northwards with those heavy pulses of rain.
02:55Some very difficult travelling conditions if you are going to be moving about at all during that overnight period and into the start of Tuesday.
03:02With it though comes some very mild air and temperatures already at the start of Tuesday.
03:07For many of us it will be around 12, 13 degrees Celsius, though still a bit chillier across the far northeast of Scotland.
03:14But the rain will arrive here as well as we head into Tuesday.
03:18So certainly for your commutes during Tuesday, do be prepared for some surface water issues and slower journey times overall.
03:24It will turn a little drier from the west as that rain band eventually clears its way through, but the winds will still remain very strong for many of us.
03:34Still coming in those winds from a southerly direction, so again it is going to be perhaps exceptionally mild for the time of year.
03:4015 degrees for many, but locally 16, even a touch higher in locations.
03:44We'd normally expect values in December to be around 6 to 9 degrees Celsius, so that is well above where we should be for the time of year.
03:53Remember that that next wind warning for northwestern Scotland does come into force at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
03:58So even though the rain bands may have cleared at that time, we have yet to see the winds peak in strength.
04:04And so even when it does turn drier, do continue to take care because we could well still see some further disruption at times.
04:11Stay up to date with the latest on this across our YouTube channel and our social media channels as well.
04:16And I'll see you again later on. Bye-bye.
