00:00For tonight's House Call segment, Dr. Mariana Brown talks about the missed signs of heart failure.
00:18Happy New Year, everybody. As we start the new year, it's the perfect time to pay closer attention to our health.
00:26When people hear heart failure, they often think that it is something that develops suddenly, when in reality, it develops slowly over time, with warning signs that are easy to miss.
00:41Tonight on House Call, we're going to talk about the missed signs of heart failure and why recognizing them early can save lives.
00:49Heart failure does not mean that the heart has stopped pumping. It means that the heart is not pumping blood efficiently.
00:58When this happens, your body retains fluid and the organs do not receive enough oxygen.
01:05Here are some early warning signs that people may overlook.
01:081. Shortness of breath with everyday activities
01:13Feeling winded while walking short distances, climbing the stairs, or doing routine activities can be an early sign that the heart is struggling.
01:242. Swelling in the legs or ankles
01:28People often associate this with older age or standing too long, but this can be a sign of fluid build-up because the heart is not pumping blood efficiently.
01:393. Persistent fatigue or low energy
01:43If you're getting enough rest and still feeling tired, this can be a sign that your muscles are not getting enough oxygen.
01:514. Wigging up shorter breath or difficulty lying flat
01:57Needing extra pillows or waking up in the middle of the night breathless can be a sign of fluid accumulation in the lungs.
02:055. Rapid weight gain over a few days
02:09Gaining 2-3 pounds over a few days may not be fat. It may be fluid retention from heart failure.
02:17These symptoms can often be dismissed as stress, poor fitness, or aging when they can be early signs of heart failure.
02:27Heart failure does not happen overnight. Your body often gives you warning signs before crisis.
02:35If you notice swelling, breathlessness, persistent fatigue, and rapid weight gain, don't ignore it.
02:43Early treatment and diagnosis can prevent hospitalizations, slow progression, and improve quality of life.
02:52When it comes to your body, listening matters.
