22:34good old hymn with this rhythm that speaks at once of fear and triumph has caught the true meaning of

23:34their true light as being the consequences of their union with him and the closeness and identity of life
23:42and fate between the vine and its branches in so systematic and detailed fashion and with such an exhibition of
23:52the
23:52grounds of its necessity our Lord had not spoken of the world's hostility in his earlier ministry but had reserved
24:00it for
24:01these last moments and the reason why he had given but passing hints was because he was there what a
24:09superb confidence
24:10that expresses in his ability to shield his poor followers from anything that might hurt or harm them he spreads
24:20the
24:20ample robe of his protection over them or rather to go back over his own metaphor as a hen gathers

24:28under her wings and so he gathers them to his own breast and stretches over them that which is at
24:36once protection
24:37and warmth keeping them safe as long as he is there no harm will come to them but he is

25:44and there are great tracts of scripture dealing with sorrows which lie perfectly dark and dead to us until experience

25:56the greeks used to send messages from one army to another by means of a roll of parchment twisted around

26:06it was perfectly unintelligible should it fall into a man's hands if they did not have a corresponding baton to
26:13twist it upon
26:16many of christ's messages to us are like that you can only understand the utterances when life gives you the
26:23frame around which to wrap them
26:25and then they flash up into meeting meaning and we say at once he told us it all before
26:31i scarcely knew what he had told me until this moment when i needed
26:38it is merciful that there should be a gradual unveiling of what is to come
26:43that the road should wind and that we should only see a short way in front of us
26:50do you not ever perhaps say to yourselves if i had known all this before
26:54i do not think i could have faced up to it
26:58did you not feel how good and kind and loving it was
27:02that in the revelation there had been concealment and that while jesus christ had told us in general terms
27:09that we must expect sorrow and trial this specific form of sorrow and trial
27:16had not been foreseen by us until we came close to it
27:21thank god for the loving reticence and for the as loving eloquence of speech
27:26and of his silence with regard to the sorrow
27:31and take this lesson one step further
27:34there ought to be in all our lives
27:37times of close and blessed communication
27:40and communion with our master
27:43when the sense of his presence with us
27:45begs all thoughts of sorrow and trial in the future
27:49out of place and needlessly disturbing
27:54if the disciples had drunk in the spirit of jesus christ when they were with him
27:58they would not have been so bewildered when he left them
28:02when he was near with them
28:04there was something better for them to do than be over exquisite
28:07to cast the fashion of us uncertain evils in the future
28:12namely to grow into his life
28:14to drink in the sweetness of his presence
28:16to be molded into the likeness of his character
28:20to understand him better
28:22and then to realize his nearness and more fully
28:28brothers and sisters for us there are times
28:30and it is our own fault if they are not frequent and blessed
28:35when thus in such an hour of sweet communion with the present christ
28:39all the future will be radiant and calm
28:42if we look into it or better
28:44the present will be so blessed
28:46that there will be no need to think of the future
28:51these men in the upper chamber
28:52if they had learnt all the lessons that he was teaching them then
28:56would not have gone out to sleep in gethsemane
29:00and to tell lies in the high priest's hall
29:03to fly like frightened sheep from the cross
29:06and to despair at the tomb
29:09you and I if we sit at his table
29:12and keep our hearts near him
29:14eating and drinking of the heavenly manner
29:17shall go in the strength of that meat
29:19forty days into the wilderness and say
29:22even let the unknown tomorrow ring with it what it may
29:29finally and for the sake of completeness
29:31let us consider the final thought in these pregnant verses
29:36the imperfect apprehension of our Lord's words
29:40which leads to sorrow instead of joy
29:46I go my way to him who sent me and none of you asks

29:51but because I have said these things to you
29:54sorrow has filled your heart
29:57he has been telling them
29:59and it was the one definite idea that they gathered from his words
30:02that he was going away
30:05and what did they say

30:16and if they had put their question

30:21then it would not have been sorrow
30:23that would have filled their hearts
30:24but the joy
30:25that would have flooded out of all the sorrow

30:30would have been changed into a glorious summer
30:33because he was going to the one who had sent him
30:36that is to say
30:38he was going home with his work done
30:40and his message accomplished
30:43and so if they had only overlooked their own selfishness
30:48and the bearing of his departure as it seemed to them on themselves
30:52and thought of it as little as it affected him
30:55they would have found that all the oppressive
30:58and the dark in it would have disappeared
31:00and they would have been glad and rejoiced
31:05brothers and sisters
31:07that gives us a thought
31:08and which we can only touch today
31:11that the steadfast contemplation
31:13of the ascended Christ
31:15who has gone to the father
31:17with his work finished
31:18is the sovereign antidote
31:21against all sense of separation and solitude
31:23the sovereign power
31:26by which we may face a hostile world
31:28the sovereign cure for every sorrow
31:32if we could live in the light of the great triumphant ascended Lord
31:36then oh how small would be the babble of this world
31:40if the great white throne
31:42and the one who sits upon it were more distinctly in front of us
31:46then we would be able to face anything
31:48and sorrow would become a solemn scorn of ills
31:53and all the transitory would be reduced
31:56into its proper insignificance
31:58and we would be emancipated from free and fear
32:02and every temptation to unfaithfulness and apostasy
32:07look up to the master who has gone before us
32:10and as the dying master outside the city wall
32:13saw the heavens opened and the son of man standing
32:16having sprung to his feet
32:18to help his poor servant at the right hand of God
32:24so with that vision in our eyes
32:26and the light of that face
32:27flashing upon our faces and making them like angels
32:31we shall be masters of grief and care
32:34pain and trial
32:36enmity and disappointment
32:38sorrow and sin
32:40and know that the absent Christ is the present Christ
32:43and that the present Christ is the conquering power in us
32:50dear brothers and sisters
32:52there is nothing else that will make us victors over the world and ourselves
32:57if we can grasp him by our faith
33:00and keep ourselves near him
33:02then union with him as the vine and the branches
33:05which will inevitably result in suffering here
33:09will result as inevitably in joy hereafter
33:14for he will never relax the grasp of his strong hand
33:18until he raises us up to himself
