08:39Jesus departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the Sea of Galilee, through the middle of

08:58They begged him to lay his hand on him.
09:01He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears.
09:09He spat and touched his tongue.
09:12Looking up into heaven, he sighed and said to him,
09:16Ephava, that is, be open.
09:20Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released.
09:27He was able to speak clearly.
09:31He commanded them that they tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they

09:59Let us ponder upon the closing words of today's Gospel.

10:22I am told that it was once said by an old heathen writer that our God cares more for adverbs
10:30than for substantives.
10:34That is to say, God had rather have done things well, rather than that the things should merely be done.
10:43He had rather have you pray earnestly than pray, communicate piously than merely communicate,
10:50forgive your enemies heartily than say you forgive them,
10:55work diligently than spend so many hours at work,
11:00and to do your duty thoroughly than so only be content with the discharge of that duty.
11:08Of Christ, we observe what is said.
11:12It is not, He opened the eyes of the blind,
11:16He unstopped the ears of the deaf,
11:20He loosened the tongue of the dumb, He healed the sick.
11:23No, not that.
11:26But, we read, He did all things well.
11:31The eyes did not become dull again,
11:34Nor the ears again lose their power of hearing,
11:37Nor the tongue stutter once more,
11:40Nor did the sick relapse into their sickness.
11:44What He did, He had done well and thoroughly.
11:51This, then, is what God desires of you,
11:53Whatever you undertake,
11:55That you do it well.
11:58Whatever your hand finds to do,
12:01Do it with all your might.
12:04If a thing is worth doing at all,
12:06It is worth doing well.
12:09It is not sufficient for us merely to coldly perform our duties.
12:15We must perform them with zeal and thoroughness.
12:20The prophet Amos was one day shown a vision.
12:25Behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumb line,
12:30With a plumb line in his hand.
12:33And the Lord said to me,
12:35Amos, what do you see?
12:37And I said, a plumb line.
12:40Then said the Lord,
12:42Behold, I will set a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel.
12:47I will not again pass by them any more.
12:52So in this vision,
12:54We have the work of God carried out by the Israelites,
12:58Represented by the form of a wall.
13:01God had given them certain duties to perform,
13:04So much work in this world,
13:06That should be done for him,
13:08And he left them on their own for a while.
13:12Then they thought to themselves,
13:14God is not here.
13:16He is not a hard overseer.
13:19We will work as we like.
13:21We will take it easy.
13:23So long as the thing is done.
13:25It does not matter how it's done.
13:29And so they did things in a careless and slovenly manner.
13:35They neglected their obligations,
13:38Or carried them out in the barest formal manner.
13:45If we come back to the comparison with the wall,
13:48It was just as though the Masons engaged on one,
13:52Put in any sort of stone,
13:55In any way.
13:56I did not trouble whether they built it in line or upright,
14:00Or whether some of the stones stuck out too far.
14:03And some were set too deep within.
14:09Then we read that God appeared to Amos and said,
14:12I will not pass by them any more.
14:17There has been too much of this slopping sort of work.
14:21I will no longer overlook it.
14:24I will try it with the plumb line of my justice.
14:28And the bad work will be pulled down.
14:30The jutting stones will be knocked out.
14:33And the crooked wall will be made straight.
14:40This vision applies just as much to us today,
14:46As to the Jews two, three thousand years ago.
14:51You have a set task.
14:53You have to build up the wall of the Lord.
14:56That is, day by day,
14:58You must lay down your salvation,
15:01And put in at least one stone,
15:03So as to raise the work.
15:05And what you build must be good,
15:08Upright, and in line.
15:11If you have a prayer to say,
15:13Say it well,
15:14Say it with devotion,
15:17Then it is a stone put on the wall,
15:20In its right place,
15:22And it is a good stone of the right quality.
15:26If you have quarrelled with a neighbour,
15:29You have made it up,
15:30Heartily,
15:31Without bearing any more malice,
15:34That also is a good stone.
15:37Forgiveness of injuries,
15:39A capital stone that will not let the water through.
15:43Lay it level,
15:44And lay it upright.
15:47You have a chance of showing a kindness to someone in need.
15:52So do it quietly.
15:54Well, without fuss or show.
15:57That will stand.
15:59It was otherwise with the Pharisees.
16:04When they did their good works,
16:05They made a noise and drew people's attention to it.
16:09That was similar to putting a stone in the wall
16:13That stuck a long way out.
16:15So that all might see it.
16:19So when the Lord comes along with his plumb line,
16:22He will knock it out with his trowel,
16:25And it will fall into pieces like a piece of slate,
16:29Being no good at all.
16:32You come to church,
16:34And you may take today's sermon home.
16:37What will you do with it?
16:40Toss it away on your road home,
16:43And make no use of it at all.
16:46I hope not.
16:48Build the lesson I am giving you tight into your lives,
16:52And it too will raise your wall,
16:54And you can lay other good lessons on top of it.
16:59And so what do you do with your Sunday?
17:04What is it wasted in lounging about?
17:07Ferreting rabbits?
17:09Making idle talk?
17:11If it be so,
17:13If it be so,
17:13Then it will add nothing to the wall of your salvation.
17:18It will be like a mere lump of earth put in,
17:21Where there should have been a stone.
17:23It will surely wash out and leave a hole.
17:30Now remember that our great architect,
17:32Jesus Christ,
17:34Is the man with the plumb line,
17:36And he will go over all our work.
17:38He will monitor and measure
17:41How we have done,
17:43Whether it is upright,
17:45Whether it is likely to stand the test of time.
17:52St. Paul gives us another way to understand the parable of the wall.
17:57He says that we are building the wall of our salvation on the cornerstone of Christ.
18:03And he goes on to say,
18:06Now if any man should build upon his foundation,
18:09Gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble,
18:14Every man's work will be shown.
18:17For the day will declare it,
18:19Because it will be revealed by the fire.
18:22And the fire will make a trial of every man's work of what they have done.
18:27If any man's work abide and endures the fire,
18:30He will receive a reward.
18:35St. Paul, you see,
18:37Tells us that the wall will be proved by fire.
18:41That is, that God will try all men's work,
18:44And see of what sort it is.
18:47Good, moderate, or totally worthless.
18:52The worthless rubbish will disappear in the judgment.
18:55The moderate will be seen in its faulty condition.
19:00But the good will endure forever.
19:05So try then,
19:07To look upon your life as a time of building up the work of your salvation.
19:13And think of every day as contributing something toward it.
19:17Ask yourself,
19:18Every day,
19:20What have I done toward this work set to me?
19:24If I have done anything,
19:26How has it been done?
19:29Moreover,
19:31Try to do all things well.
19:33Try to be zealous and thorough in everything you undertake.
19:39Also,
19:40Offer all you do to God.
19:42Ask Him to test it.
19:44And to remove from it anything that is faulty,
19:47So that you may do better the next time around.
19:55When Nehemiah had rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem,
19:58And restored that which had been cast down,
20:01And put right many of the abuses,
