00:12This is where mommy and daddy got married six years ago. Yeah, been a long time. What do you think?
00:20Isn't it cool today is Justin's and my six-year wedding anniversary
00:30to make today a little bit special. We wanted to carve out some family time.
00:33So we thought it would be a fun idea to bring the boys to our wedding venue,
00:39which is the hayloft barn here in the county.
00:41I brought something for you guys to play with.
00:46This has been such a huge transition for my family.
00:50I've been mainly home with the boys for the last six years.
00:54So transitioning from that to renovating our forever home out here
00:59and starting out my own design firm, SKDS,
01:02I think I need this family time more than they do right now.
01:06I actually brought you a surprise.
01:08Oh, no way. Yeah.
01:09Oh, it's our wedding topper. Amazing.
01:12I still have this shirt.
01:13I've grown out of both of those things.
01:16I know. My dad bod is strong.
01:18I love your dad bod.
01:20Justin's a professional musician.
01:21And actually, back at that point, his best friend, Sean,
01:25used to run the hayloft.
01:27So it was our friend's venue.
01:29It was a great spot to be able to have a wedding
01:32that could turn into a concert.
01:34It was the best night of my life.
01:38And Justin will say the same.
01:40Barnes are such beautiful spaces.
01:42Yeah.
01:43Rustic.
01:44They've got a lot of history.
01:46They're very human to me.
01:48They're not hiding anything.
01:49Yeah.
01:50I just, I love the exposed structure of barns.
01:54Like, you don't want to fuss it up.
01:55Don't paint areas of it.
01:56Just leave it the natural wood.
01:58There's nothing more beautiful.
01:59I'm so glad we came here,
02:01because this is giving me great inspiration
02:03for our next project, which happens to be a barn.
02:05It's not like I'm trying to turn it into a living space.
02:08Yeah.
02:08It's a three-season space.
02:09Really?
02:10Yeah. Yeah.
02:11I went in the hole.
02:12You went in the hole?
02:13You went in the hole.
02:15You goofballs.
02:16I just, I, there's not a single thing I would have changed
02:18about our wedding.
02:20Not at all.
02:20It was perfect.
02:21I love you.
02:22I love you too.
02:24Yes, again and again.
02:26Yes.
02:42Three years ago, moving here to the county
02:44was the best decision Justin and I have ever made.
02:47I started a new design firm, SKDS, with two of my best girlfriends.
02:52We took on a couple smaller projects last month to grow the business
02:55and it really helped the three of us find our groove together.
02:59They were a lot of work, but totally worth it.
03:04And so now, I want word to get out that we're not just doing
03:08traditional interior design.
03:10The county has so many interesting outpost buildings,
03:13whether they're old barns or stables, that have so much potential.
03:18I was introduced to a local entrepreneur here in the county
03:21that's looking to redo her barn, which is in Carrying Place,
03:24the town about 30 kilometers west of Bloomfield.
03:27And the homeowner is looking for a three-season space for some private events.
03:31We still need to meet to find out if this space will work,
03:33but how amazing would it be to be able to create a space
03:36that would allow for the experiences that we had at our own wedding?
03:41Okay.
03:42This is a 200-year-old barn.
03:45Sure is, Sarah.
03:46It is huge, though. Look at this.
03:48I want to check out this loft.
03:51Oh, go for it. I'll spot you.
03:53Wow.
03:54Guys, it's huge up here.
03:56I love the diversity of being able to take on things
03:59that are not just interior design.
04:01It's out of my comfort zone, but I think that's good.
04:04Yeah.
04:04I think it's important to kind of push a little bit.
04:08There's a rotting beam over there.
04:10Might be structural.
04:11Ooh, that's carpenter ants.
04:13In the floor over here.
04:15Oh, wow.
04:16Slow.
04:16Yeah.
04:16That's five to seven inches, like, ooh.
04:20Jo has her reservations.
04:21She knows how much structural fixes will cost
04:24on a structure like this.
04:26As long as structurally the supports are sound,
04:31a lot of it is just making it look nicer.
04:34We're the barn babes.
04:35The barn babes.
04:36We'll rebrand.
04:38Luckily, Jo and Kate are willing to give this a shot for me,
04:41but we still need to nail down the scope and the budget.
04:44Flurry lines, I lose my focus.
04:47I wonder what you feel about us.
04:53Hello.
04:54How are you?
04:55Hi, Olivia.
04:55How are you, too?
04:56Good to see you.
04:57Good to see you.
04:59We're doing it, girl.
05:00Yeah.
05:01Here she is.
05:02I'm visiting with Olivia at her barn today.
05:04To turn this into an entertaining space,
05:06this is the dream.
05:08Oh, my gosh.
05:09You cleaned it out.
05:09Yeah.
05:10It looks great.
05:11There are so many things that I found in there.
05:14Really?
05:14The squirrel's nest right here.
05:17Beautiful.
05:18I think we have a different idea of what treasures are, Olivia.
05:20Okay, look how cool this is, though.
05:21A manger.
05:22And this is where they would feed the horses.
05:24Look at that.
05:25I moved out here to Prince Edward County six years ago with an ex.
05:28I have my store, 27, that I opened last year.
05:32And I opened up a hair salon also.
05:34Just being busy and a lot of moving parts to my life.
05:37So the barn, it's just this massive thing that's a reminder of, like, you need to deal with that.
05:42How do you want to use this space?
05:45I mean, I love hosting and I have a huge family.
05:48Yeah.
05:48So I would love for us to gather in here and have a meal.
05:52There's like 26 of us when we're all together.
05:54Really?
05:55With kids and partners.
05:56Because you have how many siblings?
05:57I'm one of seven kids.
05:58My brothers and sisters and parents is nine people.
06:01I have 11 nieces and nephews, plus everybody's partners.
06:04When they come in here, the teenagers are sitting here.
06:07The adults are there.
06:08The other kids are in the other room.
06:09So I would just love to have everyone together in there.
06:13And, like, a farmhouse table right here in the center of a barn like this.
06:17Like, what an amazing experience to provide your family and friends to.
06:20That would be so nice.
06:21I also would love to have, like, some kind of workout wellness space upstairs.
06:26Well, there's no reason that we can't take advantage of all the square footage here and create a multipurpose space.
06:33And now, how are you feeling about the fact that you can see daylight through the walls?
06:39So I want to keep the inside looking like this.
06:41Mm-hmm.
06:42But I definitely want to keep out as many critters as possible.
06:46Budget-wise, where was your final number with that?
06:49I think I'm comfortable spending $60,000.
06:53And we are definitely keeping this as a three-seasons space, right?
06:56100%.
06:56Okay, perfect.
06:57I have no desire to, like, use this in the winter.
06:59Yeah.
07:00We'll need to get a structural engineer in to take a look.
07:02But I love the idea of cladding the exterior.
07:05We upgrade the window above, and then we center the doors, and then fix the structure of the side porch
07:12so it's safe to use.
07:14The first floor will definitely be used for hosting and hanging out and lounging.
07:18Yeah.
07:19I think it's the dry-wet bar back here.
07:21Because we're not going to run plumbing back here.
07:24I still think we can get you water.
07:26Leave that with me.
07:26I like that.
07:27Yeah.
07:27Style-wise, this is what I'm most excited to talk to you about, Olivia.
07:32I want every piece to, like, have a story.
07:35Everything is found through the county.
07:37It's also, like, because it's an entertaining space, I can't help but feel like we could have a little bit
07:42more fun in here.
07:44Because I've seen inside your house, and that's modern with a little bit of a rustic side to it.
07:50And then your shop in Bloomfield has more of, like, an arthouse fun 80s vibe.
07:54You haven't even seen that structure.
07:57My garage.
07:58This is a garage?
07:59It was a garage.
08:00The house was renovated during COVID.
08:02I saw the potential for everyone coming out to the county and people wanting to rent places and not stay
08:09at hotels.
08:09And the garage, I wanted to turn that into a short-term accommodation as well, just so that, while this
08:15is rented, I have somewhere to stay.
08:18You've really figured out how to make it all work here.
08:21Are you kidding me?
08:23Olivia, this is amazing.
08:26And I love the way you've just done the natural pine in here everywhere.
08:31It's like a Scandinavian cabin.
08:33But I guess the through line that I'm seeing is you love a natural material.
08:38Yeah.
08:38You love celebrating character.
08:40You're not too precious about, like, a nice plywood locker.
08:44Love a plywood locker.
08:45Like, you've got a sense of humor with your design.
08:47Oh, my gosh.
08:48I've got so much to bring back to the ladies now.
08:52But before we move forward, we have to figure out how much of this budget might be eaten up by
08:57just fixing the structure alone.
09:07I'm meeting up with Jo at her house this morning.
09:10Jo was able to meet up with a structural engineer at Olivia's barn to check out the overall damage of
09:16the project.
09:17Oh, the welcome committee is here.
09:19Hi, Kevin.
09:20Hey, Matza.
09:22We just want to make sure that Olivia's budget can actually cover the structural work that's required and then some
09:28to do an actual proper design project out of this.
09:32Because if her budget ends up being just enough to cover the structural, then it doesn't make sense to get
09:37an interior design firm involved in this project.
09:39Do you want some coffee?
09:40I'd love some.
09:41Okay.
09:41Jo is the queen of color, and she's not afraid to use it, especially in her own space.
09:46Every time I stop by her house, there's a new wallpaper up or a new painted ceiling, and I absolutely
09:52love what she has done with her home.
09:55You met with the structural engineer for Olivia's barn.
09:58Yeah.
09:59I actually had just missed him when I got there, but Jay had been there to meet with him.
10:03He talked me through what the structural engineer had kind of told him when he was there, and there aren't
10:08any major structural issues.
10:11The front door opening needs a new beam and posts.
10:15There's a missing structural post in the back left side, and the porch roof is undersized and needs to be
10:24redone structurally.
10:26Right.
10:27That is about it.
10:28Do we have any idea of where we're sitting at budget-wise?
10:33I think we'll probably be upwards of $35,000.
10:44Do we have any idea of where we're sitting at budget-wise?
10:49I think we'll probably be upwards of $35,000 for everything.
10:53Okay.
10:54$35,000 for structural cladding, but it'll probably leave us with between $10,000 to $15,000 for design elements
11:02on the interior.
11:03It's a bit tight, but it's also, you can stretch it a bit further in a barn.
11:08Well, how do you feel?
11:09Like, after seeing it, are you getting excited?
11:11No, I honestly, I don't...
11:14Can you be more honest with me, Jo?
11:15I don't see how it's a design project, like an interior design project, and I think that's what I'm having
11:21a hard time getting my brain around.
11:23Okay.
11:23Jo loves a good clean surface to paint a bright color.
11:26So I think when it's like barn board, it's like, ah, bleh.
11:30Well, I'm excited enough for the both of us.
11:32All right, I'm digging your excitement.
11:35Bake it till you make it, Jo.
11:43I guess why I'm pushing for this is because the county is known for these beautiful historic barns, and I
11:50want to be a design firm that does it all.
11:53I don't want to be beholden to kitchens and bathrooms.
11:56I mean, there's no insulation, so running any kind of running water out there will be a challenge.
12:01There's no drywall, so we're going to have to be pretty ingenious of how we're bringing color and art into
12:08the space.
12:08I definitely love a challenge, and we got this.
12:20Look at this!
12:22Oh, yeah.
12:23It's really happening.
12:24So wood to save, wood that didn't make the cut.
12:27Looks so amazing opened up.
12:29All three of us are on site today.
12:30We're also going to go over all of our design plans.
12:32Barn Babes reporting.
12:34There's only so much you can do at a round table with your computers.
12:38We need to really be on site to see what direction we're going to take this.
12:41All right, perfect work spot.
12:43Okay, let's start with talking about exterior, because that is a big budget point.
12:48We've got the garage over there that has the beautiful black siding.
12:51Correct.
12:52We've got the house with the pale gray siding.
12:54I feel like this could be a really good in-between.
12:58Okay, so this is a natural pine.
13:00In about a year and a half to two years will be more of this gray.
13:05Oh, that's pretty.
13:06Yeah.
13:06But then you could also do something with more of a finish on it, which is really pretty.
13:11That's beautiful.
13:12The downside is a product like this is so much more per linear foot.
13:16And we have a lot of linear feet.
13:19This is definitely the most cost effective.
13:21I think we go natural pine, vertical board and batten.
13:25Okay, that will eventually look like this.
13:27Yes.
13:28And the black windows are going to be what link it to the house and to the garage.
13:32All right, let's move to the interior.
13:35Joe, let's look at that image board you created.
13:37Okay, so we've got this could be really cool.
13:40We have to go this direction.
13:42I know.
13:42Seeing this is so inspiring.
13:45It's nothing I've ever seen in a barn before.
13:48We're already opening up the first two thirds of the upstairs floorboards.
13:53Then we'll add in some new windows to really bring in some natural light for the space.
13:56For the back area, we'll put in new stairs leading to a workout loft area above.
14:01While underneath, we'll have a lounge and then a bar on the other side.
14:04I also want to figure out how we're going to bring in some running water back here.
14:08But that area will lead us out through the new double doors to the structurally upgraded porch.
14:14The one thing that I have a question about, why are there brooms in all of our image boards?
14:20Okay, there is method to this madness.
14:23There always is, Kate.
14:24There's an amazing local artisan.
14:26They make cobwebers.
14:28Olivia could clean her ceiling.
14:30Here, I can kind of show you a few things from their website.
14:33They're so beautiful.
14:35You can actually give them a piece of wood that you've salvaged from somewhere and have them use it to
14:40build the broom.
14:41There is method to the madness.
14:43Oh, there's one more thing.
14:44It's the idea of putting a barn quilt on the front of the barn.
14:48Yes.
14:48I love that.
14:48I think there's a lot of room to have some fun, to incorporate some color.
14:52And I think this really sits in a good place for Olivia because she's such a champion of the local
14:56artists.
14:57Yes.
14:57Seen here.
14:58Yeah.
14:59Olivia will really appreciate that we're styling the barn with artists that are from the county.
15:04Especially being an entrepreneur herself.
15:06I love where we're going.
15:08This is why I love these sort of design round tables.
15:10Three brains come up with better ideas.
15:20Sarah, I have to show you these boards I'm about to take to be some.
15:24They're going to whittle them down.
15:25They're going to make us some handles for our brooms and dustpans.
15:29It's going to be amazing.
15:35We're in full swing at the barn.
15:36And I'm right now just trying to bring the whole look together.
15:40Really trying to focus on ways we can bring color into the barn.
15:45And something that is very unique to the county are these large graphic barn quilts.
15:50The tradition is over 300 years old and they are inspired by fabric quilts.
15:56These quilts are used for artistic expression, but are also used as navigation to find properties from a distance.
16:03I did a lot of research.
16:04There are a lot of people making these barn quilts out here in Prince Edward County.
16:08And we found Pat who is extremely well known for her barn quilts.
16:12And she has agreed to hand craft a quilt for Olivia's barn.
16:16We picked colors that would go well with the design.
16:19Hits of black that symbolize protection.
16:22And also triangles that symbolize birds to hearken back to Olivia's free spirit.
16:28It's a traditional quilt with a modern twist.
16:31Hey, are you crazy?
16:35If you think I'm coming back then I think that you're mad.
16:39I'm meeting with Joe and Jay to check in on Olivia's barn.
16:43There's been lots of progress over there.
16:45The rotten posts have been removed.
16:47The doorway's been centered.
16:49The hilly floors have been leveled with new boards.
16:52And the pine board and batten is almost finished.
16:56Joe!
16:58This is gorgeous!
17:06This is gorgeous!
17:09Yeah, it's coming along nicely.
17:10That vertical board and batten was just the perfect solution.
17:14And in the untreated pine, over the next three years, it will start to silver.
17:19And it will just look like this barn has been here for 200 years.
17:23Just got a nice little facelift.
17:24This is where there was that whole rotted post in the middle.
17:27Yeah, so we put a new beam down there.
17:29And then we found some dry rot in this main support beam up here.
17:32Really?
17:32And then we changed it to a new one as well.
17:34Adding that beam over the front door was not part of the original budget.
17:38And we don't have much padding on this project.
17:40So we really have no more room for surprises.
17:42I'll show you the side.
17:44We're still waiting to restructure the side porch.
17:47But Jay has opened up this beautiful double doorway that is now centered on that porch.
17:52It's a great way to also enter in.
17:54And now it links that space into the barn.
17:57This looks awesome!
17:58And this floor?
18:00Yeah.
18:00And he was able to make it all flush, too.
18:02Yeah, we got it all leveled.
18:04I love it.
18:04All right, I'm out of here.
18:05Okay.
18:06Have a great day.
18:07Jay, who specifically works in barn renovations.
18:10Obviously, he was the right guy for the job because it is moving quickly.
18:15And it feels pretty effortless so far.
18:17I love now that we see this central doorway.
18:21Yep.
18:21I'm thinking giant family-style dining table down the middle.
18:25So we got to fit 25 seats.
18:27I'm thinking two tables because I think it'll just be easier to move them around.
18:33Yeah.
18:33Gives her more flexibility options.
18:35Exactly.
18:36Okay.
18:36I brought some tile samples.
18:38We want to repurpose a lot of the reclaimed barn board and turn that into these extra-large double dining
18:45tables.
18:45But to break up the amount of wood in this space, I came up with this idea to tile the
18:50center of the table.
18:51That's a five-by-five tile.
18:53And the scale of it, I thought, looked great for going across the table.
18:58Yeah.
18:59And we're going to use it in this ochre color.
19:01Okay.
19:01And I was thinking, if we're going to do tile, like, in the table, is there anywhere else that we
19:07could have a tile over here on the bar?
19:11Tiled it?
19:11Like, full 80s-style across the top, down the waterfall front?
19:18I do love it.
19:19Is that as cool as I think it is?
19:21I do love it.
19:22I'm just like, oh, my gosh.
19:23Like, the structure sounds affordable.
19:26Yes.
19:26But the tile and the labor.
19:29It's not, like, a waterproofing situation.
19:31Okay.
19:31You know, it's not a bathroom.
19:33True.
19:34By the way, what tile in here do you think Olivia would like?
19:37I really like this, like, sandy blush color the most.
19:42That's the one I wanted to use, too, because it's the same color as the front door of her house.
19:46So hyper-feminine in this very rustic barn.
19:51True.
19:51So what is the design style that we're establishing here for this barn?
19:56It's a historical barn with retro-modern.
20:01Also a bit art house.
20:02It's been really difficult to nail down the design style of this barn because we know what Olivia will like.
20:09We just can't figure out how to put it in words.
20:11So we've been able to sum it up as historic barn, Olivia charm.
20:22Paula!
20:24Hi, Paula!
20:25Hi!
20:26Hi!
20:26I went right for your trunk because I know what's in there.
20:30Joe said, if you're going to be at the barn, Paula lives close, she might just bring a few pieces
20:35by.
20:35I do.
20:36Paula is a connection from Joe, who makes this amazing plywood art.
20:41Joe pulled one of Paula's pieces into our design early on, and it just lit up the design.
20:48It's the colors, the textures, the fun.
20:50So I was so excited about the idea of trying to see what other pieces of hers could potentially make
20:57sense in this barn.
20:58My goodness!
20:59They're so good, Paula!
21:01I love working with wood because it's just more natural.
21:04Paint absorbs so differently than on canvas.
21:08Obviously in here, we're not really working with plaster drywall walls.
21:12No, so canvas would not make sense.
21:14This is like a very raw construction material, as well as the barn.
21:18Those are very raw walls.
21:20So I feel like this art makes sense in there.
21:23Everything I do is either a reflection of how I see myself that day, how I'm feeling, or how if
21:30I've run into somebody that's kind of made an impression on me.
21:33So if we're working within the confines of Historic Barn, Olivia Charm, this art is oozing charm to me.
21:41And when I think about Olivia, Olivia's very charming.
21:43Olivia is a lot of fun, and I can really see this art jiving with Olivia's personality.
21:49These two are going to live together on a wall, I know that.
21:53Gotcha.
21:53We'll take this cookie frog with the braces, and then I really love the crocodile.
21:58I know, that one's fun.
21:59I think Olivia is going to really appreciate these.
22:03All right, let's pack them up.
22:04All right.
22:12I'm meeting Jo at Olivia's barn today.
22:14There has been huge progress on this project.
22:18Oh, gosh.
22:18Look at that picture window.
22:20I know.
22:21The French doors are going to go in today.
22:23But first, Jay and his team are replacing this massive beam on the porch.
22:29Olivia really wanted this center post removed on the side porch, which meant we had to upgrade the beam to
22:35really work for that whole span.
22:37But I am loving this bonus space we have for entertaining out here now, and it is a much better
22:42flow.
22:44Nice.
22:44Just like that.
22:45This looks amazing.
22:46Yeah.
22:47To think that this undersized porch now has structure like this.
22:50Poor little roof didn't know what hit it right now.
22:52Why don't we get the door in?
22:53Why don't we?
22:55Why don't we, Jay?
22:56Easy does it.
22:58There we go.
23:00This looks fantastic.
23:01I'm going to go work on the drawings for the custom table.
23:04Good job, guys.
23:06Thanks, Jay.
23:06You're welcome.
23:13Sarah just left before potentially the best part of the day.
23:17Our guy Steve is here delivering the sweetest kitchenette for Olivia's barn.
23:23It's got two burners, it's got a fridge, and it's got a sink that we're going to hook up to
23:28a greywater jug and a potable water jug and get her some running water.
23:33I think this is really going to elevate Olivia's barn just to, like, that next level.
23:37Like, now she can keep drinks in the barn.
23:38Now she can kind of keep things warm if she's serving or entertaining.
23:42It just kind of allows us to take it just one step further.
23:45Baby, where did you fall from?
23:47Looking like an alien.
23:49Nothing typical, but the way you move.
23:53It's kind of funny because the barn doesn't look that close to being finished, but we're actually just weeks away
23:58to completion.
24:02Adam is working away on the tables that he's making with the reclaimed barn boards we were able to salvage
24:08from demo.
24:08He's also started on the plywood bar that's going to be tiled.
24:12And then over at the barn, the electricians have finished their wiring.
24:16They're even putting the finished fixtures on now with the sconces and the ceiling mount lights.
24:20I cannot wait to see how this all comes together.
24:23Check it out.
24:24Looks great.
24:25Barn babes are reunited.
24:27All three of us are on site today to do a check-in.
24:30Oh, well, that's a post.
24:32Isn't it great?
24:33It just looks so much more secure.
24:35I know.
24:36This is all fine and great, but there's some things inside that aren't going so great.
24:41Wow.
24:41That I need to tell you about.
24:43Oh, shoot.
24:44Yeah.
24:48This is all fine and great, but there's some things inside that aren't going so great.
24:52Wow.
24:53That I need to tell you about.
24:54Oh, shoot.
24:55Yeah.
24:56I've been chatting with Jay and there's an issue with the loft.
25:00The floorboards up there are really spongy.
25:03Oh.
25:03That can't be good, Jo.
25:05No.
25:05For her workout?
25:06The loft area is specifically for working out.
25:10So it's very important that the floor is solid and we also have plans to put a very heavy Pilates
25:17machine up there.
25:17He's thinking that we should be doubling up the floorboards.
25:22He thinks he can do it for around $2,000.
25:26Don't forget it's not just $2,000 because we also had the new beams at the front door.
25:31The beam to get rid of that center post on the deck, which was a client like Olivia asked.
25:37Yeah.
25:37Then also because we did that, now the singular steps don't make sense.
25:42She'd like long, full-length steps.
25:45Okay.
25:45Which makes a lot of sense.
25:46Makes a lot of sense, but wasn't part of the original scope.
25:49We're about $5,000 for everything.
25:52Over.
25:52Okay.
25:53Uh.
25:54Yeah.
25:55$5,000 is a little harder to make disappear in the budget than $2,000.
25:59But hopefully it won't have to come out of the design budget.
26:02Ah!
26:03The micro kitchen has arrived.
26:06Oh!
26:06Sarah Keenly's side?
26:07You've seen it in the flesh.
26:09You are the proud owner of a new micro kitchenette.
26:14We could essentially feed some hoses through and then have a jug for grey water and a jug for potable
26:21water.
26:21I love it.
26:22Look what arrived today.
26:25Oh!
26:25Hey, just imagine I am...
26:29A window?
26:31Oh, I love it.
26:32That's gorgeous.
26:33That's gorgeous.
26:34The other day when I was shopping at Olivia's store 27, I actually mentioned to her how much I love
26:39this mirror that she has.
26:41And she's like, actually, I'm thinking of doing something for my barn.
26:43Lo and behold, here is the most beautiful piece of stained glass that we're going to be adding in here.
26:48She got a barn quilt made in stained glass.
26:51That is the perfect place for it.
26:53I think if we center it in that section, that looks beautiful.
26:57I'm kind of conflicted here because the stained glass was never part of the original design.
27:01I absolutely love this, but now the cost of the labor to install it is starting to eat into our
27:08already overflowing budget.
27:10Once I start to get some of these invoices in from the sub-trades, I'll have a better idea of
27:15what we can kind of move around and what I need to go back to Olivia for.
27:18She's done renovations before.
27:20Yeah.
27:21She understands how it all works.
27:22I think she'll be reasonable about it.
27:23Yeah.
27:25Don't forget, don't forget, you got the feeling.
27:31Joe and Kate, you guys have to come to this pop-up.
27:34It is insane.
27:36It's all vintage furniture.
27:39Carlo, come over here.
27:41This is Olivia's brother, Carlo.
27:43It's his shop.
27:45So it turns out style runs in the family with Olivia.
27:48Her brother Carlo runs this amazing furniture company called Bon Choice.
27:52I used to source from them in the city, like amazing furniture pieces that are on the higher end of
27:59the budget.
28:00Guys, look at these Danish chairs.
28:02These beautiful natural wood antique chairs are a really cool option.
28:08We'll see if we can make it work with the budget.
28:09Can you help us with some sourcing for your sister's barn?
28:13Of course.
28:13Really?
28:14I'm assuming you're going to give her a good deal.
28:16Yeah, I'll think about that.
28:17I'll help out for sure.
28:18This is the truth of what kind of sister she is, right?
28:21Yeah.
28:26We are so lucky to have access to so many amazing artists in the county.
28:32So Beeson Brooms is this fantastic artisanal broom maker that is located by Sandbanks, which is this amazing park here.
28:40So we're in the area and Kate told me that the brooms that we had custom made for Olivia's project
28:46are actually being finished up today.
28:48And I totally want to go check this out.
28:51Hi, are you Eve?
28:53Hi.
28:53I'm Sarah.
28:54Hi, it's nice to meet you.
28:54Nice to meet you.
28:55Wow.
28:56What a beautiful shop.
28:58So I'm finishing up the Cobweber.
28:59Oh, cool.
29:00Is this ours?
29:01This is yours.
29:01This is out of the wood from the beam.
29:04Do you just do that on a lathe?
29:06We do it just by hand.
29:07We cut into it.
29:09Oh my gosh.
29:09That thing was this big.
29:11That's a lot of work.
29:13Oh, wow.
29:14That's why there's such beautiful organic shape to it.
29:16Yeah, we like to keep it a little bit uneven.
29:17The beautiful thing about the community support when you're starting a business here is that it really gives you a
29:24shot.
29:24Like you can turn your hobbies into these small businesses and the community really rallies around you.
29:31Eve has created a sweeper.
29:32We discussed a Cobweber, which she's working on now.
29:36So then a smaller kind of hand broom.
29:39Mm-hmm.
29:39And this dust pan.
29:41Practical.
29:41And this is all our barn board.
29:43It is.
29:44Wow.
29:44Just adding in this handmade element, it's functional, but it's also beautiful.
29:50And when something can have a dual purpose like that, that's a serious win when it comes to design.
29:55I'll just go grab the sweeper and you're all set.
29:58Great.
29:58Eve, thank you so much.
30:00These are so fantastic.
30:01Also, I'm going to be getting these on my own card.
30:03Perfect.
30:03Well, when she brings us the other broom, we should be able to just ride these out.
30:06Well, I thought that was the plan, Sarah.
30:08I don't know.
30:10I don't know.
30:20We are one week away from revealing the barn to Olivia.
30:24I am just finalizing Olivia's financial spreadsheet.
30:30So, shoring up a lot of the structural issues, we're looking at $5,000.
30:35So, where is this $5,000 overage coming from?
30:39Does she have access to that money and we can still retain our design budget to keep moving forward with
30:45our big plans?
30:46Or are we essentially just handing back a finished structure of a barn and we can't even do the design
30:52work because there's no more money?
30:53I'm going to give her a call and see what the purse strings are saying.
31:11As a design firm, you want to be known for the beautiful work that you do.
31:15But the worst thing that you can do for your client is let the project go over budget and not
31:22track that until the project is finished.
31:25No matter how happy they are, it doesn't mean they have access to that money.
31:28So, I do take that very seriously.
31:35Well, that was good news.
31:38She took it really well.
31:39I think it's because she's a business owner.
31:41She has renovated a whole bunch of spaces before and she understands what's going on.
31:47She's very adamant about keeping this loft space as a workout space.
31:51So, we're going to go ahead and do it.
31:53She's not taking it out of the design budget.
31:55She can find $5,000.
31:56This is something that is just the reality of a 200-year-old barn and we want to do it
32:02right.
32:07This is definitely late to be replacing floors on a project.
32:11Luckily, they can just go on top of the existing.
32:14But I'm still feeling the time crunch because Olivia has booked her entire family,
32:19which we now know is a lot of people, to come for a big family dinner before the season changes.
32:27Hi, Sarah. I just got home from checking on the barn.
32:31It's looking really good.
32:33I'm feeling like I'm a little more on the barn team side.
32:38Yeah, it's good.
32:40Okay, talk soon.
32:46Hello.
32:49Adam.
32:51Tables.
32:52So good.
32:54This is my favorite stage.
32:56There was a long stretch here where it was just barn walls.
33:00And now you're really starting to see where the big picture that our firm has for this space is coming
33:06together.
33:07Jay's team worked overtime to get the floors in for the loft, all the windows in, including the new stained
33:14glass window that Olivia bought.
33:15It looks amazing.
33:18I cannot believe you made the logs look this good as the legs.
33:24It looks like an artisanal beaver went to town on this.
33:27Basically what happened, yes.
33:29This is the ochre tile, right?
33:30Yeah.
33:31This is totally where the historical barn meets the Olivia charm.
33:36The graphic elements are super modern and a little bit arthouse, but in this historical barn.
33:44Yeah.
33:44I know.
33:46I know.
33:46So good.
33:47And this tile on the bar.
33:50Love this.
33:51This is looking so cool.
33:53Okay, you have so much work to get done.
33:56Okay.
33:56Oh, yeah.
33:57Because we're hoping to reveal this to Olivia in two days.
34:00I know.
34:00Oh, my God.
34:01Yeah.
34:01I don't know if you miraculously know how to make things dry quicker.
34:05He does.
34:05All right.
34:06Great.
34:06Adam's our guy.
34:18Sounds like Adam was here pretty late last night.
34:21But he is proving once again that he is one of the trades that we can depend on to get
34:26the job done and get it done well.
34:33It's looking awesome.
34:35It's coming together.
34:37Amazing.
34:38We're styling the barn today.
34:39We're showing it to Olivia tomorrow.
34:41I'm really excited because you don't style barns that often with artwork and beautiful furniture and stuff.
34:47So it's pretty unique.
34:48Look at these tables.
34:49The central focal point of this entire design is really this oversized harvest table.
34:56That was the initial reason that Olivia wanted to renovate this barn to be able to entertain her very large
35:02family.
35:03These are showstopper chairs.
35:06We were able to get 10 of these beautiful natural wood antique chairs from Carlo.
35:12Gave a good deal to his sister.
35:14But that's not enough for 30 people.
35:15So we were able to make up for the rest of the chairs with these more cost effective Windsor style
35:20chairs.
35:21It's the perfect mix.
35:22It's like the rustic sort of handmade quality against a graphic black stripey line.
35:29Olivia's style is really contemporary so we were able to lean into that and do something that's a lot more
35:36poppy and fun.
35:37A little bit art house in an unexpected place like a barn.
35:41They look really fun together because they're so perfect for a barn.
35:45You're really seeing Kate's art direction, her styling.
35:50We're putting the boards back on the wall.
35:53It's basically what we're doing.
35:55Great brooms, Kate.
35:56It's the brooms.
35:58It's these functional pieces that she adds, but they're also art installations at the same time.
36:03And the sink is done.
36:06And then so we've got our...
36:08So we've got a tank for the potable water and a smaller tank for the gray water.
36:12Great.
36:13I love it.
36:14When you work within a space like a barn, it's all one material.
36:18It's all barn board, which is giving you that beautiful varying of grays and browns.
36:24So it could really handle some bold primary colors.
36:27We've gone with reds, greens, purples in here.
36:31Like some fun vintage furniture.
36:33Something that is uniquely Olivia's barn.
36:36Do you even know how this works?
36:37I do.
36:38And then you just go on it.
36:40And you're like...
36:42That looks pretty cool, man.
36:44Doesn't look that hard though.
36:46How's it going up there?
36:47Right.
36:48Yeah, don't worry.
36:48We're working hard up here.
36:50One of the challenges is making a barn feel like a space that is warm and cozy that you
36:57would want to spend your time in.
36:59And that's what I really feel that we've achieved as a team.
37:03It's looking great.
37:04Yeah.
37:05And you did a great job with this.
37:06Thanks.
37:14I am officially handing Olivia back.
37:17Her extremely new and improved 200 year old barn today.
37:22I know she arrived late last night.
37:24So I've sent her a message and she's coming out any minute.
37:27Hello.
37:28Hi.
37:30How are you feeling?
37:32So excited.
37:33Oh my gosh.
37:34Look at this.
37:39This is unreal.
37:40You like it?
37:41I love it.
37:42This massive window with all that natural light.
37:44Yeah.
37:44It's more than I could have imagined.
37:46Like it looks amazing.
37:47So new siding on the entire exterior of the barn.
37:51And the barn quilt, we commissioned it specifically for your project.
37:54I love it.
37:55It's beautiful.
37:56I can sit out here and be happy.
37:57I don't even need to go inside.
37:59See ya.
37:59We're done.
38:00Have fun.
38:01Okay.
38:02You want to see inside?
38:03Yeah.
38:03Let's go.
38:08Whoa.
38:10Oh.
38:11This is not the same blade.
38:13This is crazy.
38:24This is not the same blade.
38:34Oh my God.
38:35It's like having an out of body experience.
38:38Yeah.
38:39Look at this ceiling.
38:40Isn't that great?
38:41It's so beautiful.
38:42I actually can't remember what it used to be like.
38:45Like this just feels right.
38:47The light in here is amazing.
38:49It's so bright.
38:50Look at this table.
38:53Oh my gosh.
38:54This table is beautiful.
38:56The table legs and the skirting around is all made with wood that we salvaged from this barn.
39:02No way.
39:02Yeah.
39:03It's so beautiful.
39:04And then by doing this top in the tile, it adds such beautiful texture and pattern.
39:10Wow.
39:11The craftsmanship is amazing.
39:13Thankfully, your brother Carlo gave you a really good deal on these chairs.
39:17Yeah.
39:17I love them.
39:18They look so perfect.
39:20These are so beautiful.
39:21Yeah.
39:22Wow.
39:22Wow.
39:22Wow.
39:23Can you picture your family around these tables?
39:25I can.
39:26So cool.
39:28Look at this fun artwork.
39:30Isn't that great?
39:31Yeah.
39:31That's a local artist, Paula.
39:32And we just thought it was so much fun in a barn like this.
39:36I love it.
39:37It's so beautiful.
39:38Oh my gosh.
39:38And this bar.
39:43It's so perfect.
39:45By doing this in more of like an 80s style.
39:49Yeah.
39:49We felt that it was a way of making this like 200-year-old rustic barn feel more you.
39:54Yeah.
39:55You know?
39:55I love it.
39:56It's perfect.
39:57Your beautiful stained glass window.
40:00It's so pretty.
40:00It's gorgeous.
40:01Oh my gosh.
40:02The light coming through it.
40:03Yeah.
40:04And then we have your micro kitchen.
40:06It is a two burner stove.
40:08Okay.
40:09A bar fridge.
40:10Cool.
40:10And it is also potable water and gray water.
40:14All you have to do is flick on this switch and you have running water.
40:19This is crazy.
40:20So cool.
40:21Isn't it cool?
40:22I promise you.
40:23I told you I'd get you some water.
40:25You got me water.
40:26And then so that brings us into your lounge area.
40:36So, so cool.
40:38I love all of these colors.
40:40So fun.
40:41So bright.
40:42It turns out a 200-year-old barn can handle color.
40:46I love it.
40:47I love it.
40:48And like look at the view from here.
40:50Isn't that amazing?
40:51It doesn't feel real.
40:53Like I feel like I'm in a magazine.
40:54Wow.
40:56It's amazing.
40:58This is something called a cobweber.
41:01Just, you know.
41:01I think I'm going to need one of those.
41:02Yeah.
41:03Look at that.
41:03It's like a great way of reaching up and getting cobwebs.
41:07You're hired.
41:07I know, right?
41:07Feel that.
41:08Oh my gosh.
41:09It's so beautiful.
41:10Isn't it so nice and light?
41:11Wow.
41:12You are holding one of the beams of your barn.
41:15No.
41:16Come on.
41:16Hand made, hand woven.
41:18Beautiful.
41:18Including the dustbin.
41:20This is so beautiful.
41:23I'm...
41:24It's so amazing.
41:25Oh, honey.
41:27I'm so happy you love it.
41:28I'm going to cry in my room.
41:30Did not see that coming.
41:31I know.
41:32We have a second floor to show you.
41:34You wanted a workout space.
41:37Yeah.
41:38Oh my gosh.
41:40What?
41:41Like you always say, it's the way to go.
41:48Ah!
41:49This is crazy.

43:04Thank you so much.
43:05Oh, you're happy.
43:05It's so beautiful.
