00:00Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh!
00:03Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh!
00:07Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
00:08Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh!
00:09Uh-oh, I think I've caught some fish!
00:13I'm an octopus!
00:14Whoa!
00:18Moving to the county just over a year and a half ago,
00:21there's been such a big transition for our family.
00:26Renovating a house, starting up my design firm,
00:29but also post-kids, so now I can't be the workaholic
00:32that I used to be.
00:33Did you find a snail?
00:34Oh, buddy, you found one.
00:36The boys have been really easygoing
00:39with all the changes that have come their way.
00:42Mommy, do snails have tails?
00:44Not really.
00:45If anything, that lights a fire under me even more
00:49to create specific bedrooms tailored to my boys.
00:54Do you know that Mommy and Daddy
00:55are gonna start designing your bedroom soon?
00:57Louie, are we gonna put a crib in your room,
01:00or are we gonna do a big boy bed?
01:01I wanna do a big boy bed.
01:04Okay.
01:04What about your bed?
01:05What's your favorite color?
01:07All the colors.
01:08All the colors?
01:09Yeah.
01:09Like rainbow?
01:10Yeah.
01:10That makes it easy for me.
01:13How are you doing?
01:14How are things?
01:15Obviously, working with Kate and Joe has been amazing.
01:18Yeah.
01:18I'm loving it.
01:19But I'm stressing about letting our project drop.
01:23Yeah.
01:23We're spending just, like, more money than we thought we would.
01:26I know.
01:27The only reason we're balancing it is
01:28because you are taking on, like, your job and all home life.
01:32Mommy, that was lava!
01:34The floor is lava!
01:35Okay.
01:36Do you remember a time when we couldn't even have a sentence at a play place?
01:41Like...
01:41Now we can get three sentences.
01:43I know.
01:43What'd you like to put the world to rights?
01:48I'm going out tonight.
01:50You can come if you wanna.
01:53Jack's at school.
01:54Louie's at daycare.
01:55Yes.
01:56This is exciting.
01:57I know.
01:57I've been a big city girl up until three years ago
02:00when Justin and I decided to move our family to Prince Edward County.
02:04We are working on our forever home right now.
02:08Well, I just really wanna make sure that we're on the same page
02:10for what I'm thinking for our family room and the boys' bedrooms,
02:13because that's really the next rooms that we can knock off with the house.
02:16Mm-hmm.
02:17I am so proud of what we've been able to do with SKDS
02:19and the kind of work we've taken on.
02:21Yes, it's taken my eye off of our own farmhouse
02:24that I'm trying to renovate,
02:25but I have been able to finish the living room, dining room, music lounge here.
02:29I'm having to do it in phases
02:31to make sure I have enough time to put towards launching the new design firm.
02:35It's coming.
02:36Yes.
02:36Coming along.
02:37I'm giving myself about five weeks for these next spaces to finish them off,
02:41and I kind of have to,
02:42because between construction costs, labor, materials, the renovation insurance,
02:48Justin and I are just hemorrhaging money,
02:50and we need to be in before the winter.
02:51All right.
02:52Yeah.
02:53I know, it's moving.
02:54Yeah.
02:55It's going to be such huge peace of mind when the exterior is all sealed.
02:59That's a huge checkpoint on this project,
03:02and this siding has been sitting in our front yard for two months.
03:06It's time for it to be up.
03:08But family room, boys' bedrooms, they can all be worked on now.
03:13What do you think?
03:15Yep.
03:15A lot of changes.
03:16Isn't it great?
03:17This is our family room.
03:19Wow.
03:19This family room space was always kind of set up as a family room.
03:22Where are we?
03:23We're in our new hall!
03:27New hall!
03:28New hall!
03:29Yes.
03:29New hall!
03:31Because it truly was an old porch that had been sort of insulated .
03:38We always knew that this space was going to need a little bit more TLC.
03:41It did, however, need more work than I had thought.
03:45We ended up having to completely restructure all of the walls
03:49because it turns out that there had been carpenter ants.
03:52So we had to essentially rip down all of those walls
03:55that we thought we could work within
03:56and rebuild them in two-by-sixes.
03:59And now with the new drywall and windows,
04:01the space looks completely different.
04:03The floor is leveled.
04:04And most importantly, it is properly insulated.
04:08Look at this.
04:09Talk about signs of it being an old porch.
04:12Like, this is the brick columns
04:13that used to hold up the porch, right?
04:16And this is where the wood-burning fireplace goes?
04:19This is your one-ask.
04:21You can find me here.
04:22I know.
04:23All my buddy wants is a wood-burning fireplace.
04:27Yes.
04:27And you finally, finally get one.
04:29What are we doing for the hearth?
04:32Tile or...?
04:32That's a really good question.
04:34I actually haven't even thought about that yet.
04:35Checking in on my project makes me kind of realize
04:38that I've been letting some things fall through the cracks.
04:41It just, with everything else going on,
04:43it just hasn't been my priority.
04:45I'm sort of coining this room with the boys' rooms
04:47as, like, colorful and cozy.
04:50And I actually want this beautiful, light-filled space
04:53to go very dark.
04:55How dark?
04:56Like, dark.
04:57Black?
04:58Surprise!
04:59In a kid's room?
05:00Okay.
05:01The black walls will contrast
05:03with the exterior red brick
05:04that I'll leave exposed.
05:06A big sofa,
05:08some blackout blinds for movie nights,
05:10and the best part?
05:11A revolving disco ball in the corner.
05:14And then imagine, like, the middle of winter
05:15when you have your fire going.
05:17Like, it's cocoony.
05:18I dig cocoony.
05:19You dig cocoony?
05:19Yeah, I dig it.
05:20Hey, playing house needs some work.
05:23I think I can only handle one house at a time right now.
05:25I'll take care of it.
05:26Oh, really?
05:27Can I?
05:28Are you kidding me?
05:29No.
05:30That's really cute.
05:30Not the handiest of husbands, but...
05:32Babe, you're great.
05:33Oh, do you want to check out the boys' bedrooms?
05:35Yes, please.
05:37Jack's room?
05:38Yeah, let's check Jack's room first.
05:40Okay, so this is Jack's room.
05:42So great.
05:43Jack is my firstborn.
05:44He's six years old.
05:46He is an absolute joy bomb.
05:49He is very quirky.
05:50He absolutely loves random things
05:52like satellite dishes.
05:54Wow.
05:55Kids' rooms, it's so important to me
05:57that you don't do a theme.
05:59Yeah.
05:59And I hate sinking money
06:01into something that they're going to outgrow.
06:03It's like I need at minimum seven years
06:06out of a room with a kid.
06:07Rooms to grow, you know?
06:08There won't be any permanent satellite dishes
06:11in the bedroom.
06:12Let's just say that much.
06:13Maybe I'll put one on the playhouse.
06:15That's a good idea.
06:16Oh, he would lose it.
06:18I'll call my team.
06:20You have a team?
06:21I have a team.
06:21Wow, things escalated quickly.
06:23That door is getting closed in.
06:25Yeah.
06:25We're going to match the trim
06:26and everything, make that disappear.
06:28And I'm thinking primary colors as my palette
06:31with a brand new bed and a colorful rug.
06:33This hole that's leading into our bedroom right now
06:35will become his closet with a big box store unit.
06:38And then I'm thinking I'll paint the ceiling
06:40the same dark color as the family room.
06:42Let's take out Louie's room.
06:43Okay.
06:45Hey, Louie's room.
06:47Oh, sweet Lou.
06:47I know, little Louie bananas.
06:50My Louie bananas, he is three and a half.
06:53He's very playful.
06:54He loves dressing up in costumes.
06:57Can you show me your elephant sound?
07:01So for his space, it is a smaller room.
07:05So I think I have to think big picture
07:07and going up as opposed to out.
07:10This is the smallest room in the house,
07:12but it's going to have huge impact
07:14because this is Louie's built-in bunk bed.
07:17Custom stairs that take you up to the side.
07:20It'll feel like a cool playhouse in his bedroom.
07:24I'm going to paint it powder blue.
07:26I'm going to reuse his orange tiger rug
07:28because Louie loves animals.
07:30I want to create like a birdcage pendant light for his room.
07:34So yes, Louie's rug is a giant tiger rug,
07:37but it's still really fun
07:39and it's not too like nursery specific,
07:42which is why it still works.
07:44It's all about space planning in this room.
07:45Yeah, he's got the best view.
07:47He does.
07:47Your project.
07:48Got my playhouse down there.
07:51Contractor Justin.
07:52I think that's really sweet.
07:53You're going to take that on.
07:54Yeah, why not?
07:54Yeah.
08:04Work is starting on the inside
08:05with the team repairing the old window in the family room.
08:08Just a little bit of paint is a great way
08:10of making them feel fresh
08:11and celebrating these old windows.
08:13I'm going to be doing some drapery in the family room
08:16and in Jack and Louie's rooms.
08:18So I have to pop into my farmhouse garage
08:20where I store all the things for this reno
08:23to dig out some drapery samples that arrived a while ago.
08:27Ah, this is them.
08:29I want to do these great Roman blinds in the family room.
08:32My whole vision of these family movie nights in this space
08:36and just to be able to press a button
08:38and these Roman blackout blinds all descend at once.
08:41The fact that these samples are here
08:42brings me one step closer to making some decisions.
08:48But I still need to pick up the wallpaper for Louie's room.
08:51It's an online order, so I need to account for delivery time.
08:54And the wallpaper needs to go up
08:55before the bunk beds can get installed.
08:57Jack's room needs some attention.
09:00Oh, I'm working late again at the farmhouse.
09:03I have such great ideas for Louie's room,
09:06but poor Jack's room over there
09:08is kind of sitting with, like, zero pizzazz.
09:12So I really need to find something to add to his room
09:15and the time to source it.
09:17Good news is I think I figured out Louie's wallpaper.
09:19I love the idea of doing this, like, two-story bunk bed
09:23that looks more like a fort in a way
09:26in this great bright blue.
09:28And then if I do a mural like this behind it,
09:32it sort of feels like a bit of a treehouse kind of a vibe
09:34that I don't feel will read too juvenile.
09:37And I do feel like an illustrated forest
09:40on one of the walls is pretty timeless,
09:43at least until he's, like, 10, 15.
09:46I don't know.
09:47Who knows what these kids are going to get into?
09:49Isn't that the craziest thing about having kids?
09:51It's, like, who are you going to become?
09:53So at least now I'm pushing him towards being a nature lover.
09:56All right, let's do it.
09:58Let it shine, she can sail, she can take your time.
10:06Let it shine, she can take your time.
10:10Hello?
10:12Hey, Sarah, how you doing?
10:13Oh, hey, Josh.
10:14How you doing?
10:15Good.
10:16Got some big news for you.
10:17The rest of the windows are going in
10:19and siding's going up on the exterior of the house.
10:22Amazing.
10:22I cannot wait to see this siding up.
10:25This is going to be, like, the make or break of if I made the right call.
10:28Yeah.
10:29I picked the siding a while ago.
10:31I decided to go with wood siding in my signature blacky-blue color,
10:34cedar shakes up top, and horizontal boards below.
10:37This is to define the upper level from the lower level.
10:40I'll swing by sometime this week to come check that out, okay?
10:44Yeah, maybe I'll meet you down there.
10:46Sounds good.
10:46Okay, thanks, Josh.
10:56Can I hold Jack's hand?
10:58You can hold Jack's hand, yeah.
10:59Can I have a nice blue hand?
11:00I'm meeting with the clients today.
11:02All right, guys, big project here.
11:04The clients want a clubhouse.
11:06We're going to give them a clubhouse.
11:08Is that my playhouse?
11:10That's your playhouse.
11:11Now, we've got to be careful in here.
11:12There's a couple things that need repair.
11:14Sarah's got a lot on her plate with the new firm and the farmhouse,
11:18so I volunteered my time to take on the kids' playhouse.
11:21And look at it.
11:21The floors are all broken.
11:23Floors are broken, so step around here with me.
11:26Okay.
11:27Are you okay there?
11:28I'm going to hold my hand.
11:29There's a bit of a nail right there.
11:31I'm six.
11:32I can do it all by myself.
11:34You guys don't have safety shoes on.
11:36Can I get out?
11:37Yeah, you can get out.
11:39So, as you can see...
11:41Hey, what are these?
11:42Those are boards.
11:43I'm finding it difficult to communicate with them.
11:45It's a little challenging.
11:47I think we'll get there.
11:48What do you want?
11:48What are your big asks for this?
11:50A satellite.
11:52You want a satellite.
11:53From a design perspective, the clubhouse is not going to offer anything of real sustenance.
11:58What else?
11:59I want to make a boat.
12:01You want to make a boat out of your playhouse?
12:03Whether it's going to be featured in any sort of magazine is really up for debate.
12:08Like, how much money do you have?
12:10Seven.
12:10You have seven.
12:12$70,000?
12:14$7.95.
12:15You have $7.95.
12:16Okay, so almost eight bucks.
12:18Well, we'll see what we can do.
12:20But I think we can make it work for $8.
12:22But right now, uh, I think I got this.
12:25I think I'm all done.
12:27Really?
12:28I've got the feeling it just won't quit.
12:31Let's just stand up out in front of it.
12:36Hey, Sarah.
12:37Just wanted to let you know, we have come across a couple issues.
12:40The siding, and there seems to be a bit of a problem in Jack's room.
12:43So if you do want to swing by the site today, and we can go over a few things, just
12:47let me know.
12:48I'll be here all day.
12:49Hey, Josh.
12:50Hey, Sarah.
12:51How you doing?
12:51I'm good.
12:53This looks really great.
12:54Yes.
12:55We finished the shakes off this morning.
12:57They look amazing.
12:58I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed.
12:59I really thought that the siding was going to be, like, long gone done by now.
13:04Yeah, that was the plan.
13:05Leaving exterior sections exposed for so long opens us up to the potential of rain leaking in, causing unnecessary damage
13:12to the walls.
13:13Something I do not have padding for in my budget.
13:16Unfortunately, the door that was installed got damaged in shipping.
13:19Yeah.
13:20So it needs to be pulled out.
13:21But it's just the frame that's damaged, right?
13:23It's just this part right here.
13:24It's just the frame that's damaged, yeah.
13:26But this frame needs to be pulled out now, and siding can't be finished to butt up to it.
13:30Of course.
13:31Two, three weeks.
13:32Really?
13:32Yeah, for the turnaround yet.
13:34Unfortunately, it's kind of out of our control at this point.
13:36Really?
13:40Unfortunately, it's kind of out of our control at this point.
13:42This was one of those, like, easy checks.
13:44Like, the siding's been sitting here waiting to go up, and I just, I, like, really need this finished.
13:49If you do want to see it finished, we can go around back and have a look at that.
13:52Really?
13:52We just completed that, yeah.
13:53Yeah, maybe that will cheer me up.
13:56Oh, wow.
13:57Okay.
13:57Okay, okay, okay.
13:59I love the way the cedar shake at the top and the horizontal siding at the bottom, same color as
14:05what pulls it together.
14:06Yeah.
14:08Family room's looking so good, Josh.
14:11Yeah, it's coming together pretty good.
14:13So you need to pick out a hearth for this, though, as well for us.
14:15Yes, I do.
14:17Yes, I do.
14:19I'm starting to really feel the pressure.
14:22I'm spending most of my time on other people's projects and not so much on my own, so things are
14:26starting to fall a little bit on mine, which means delays.
14:29And delays cost money that we didn't plan on spending.
14:33Okay.
14:34Jack's room.
14:35Jack's room.
14:36We do have some bad news in here.
14:38Nope.
14:38Not today, Josh.
14:39Not today.
14:40As you can see in the ceiling, we have a pretty major crack that's happened.
14:43I think our only option here is just to drywall completely over top.
14:47To drywall.
14:48Oh, shoot.
14:48Probably only about four sheets of drywall in here.
14:50A little bit of mudding and taping labor.
14:52The obvious answer is yes, we have to do that.
14:54Yeah, I think it's for the best.
14:55Yeah.
14:56Unfortunately, that's not the only spot things are cracked.
14:59Louie's room is as well.
15:00What?
15:01Yes.
15:01Really?
15:05Oh, I never noticed that crack before.
15:08Yeah.
15:08I really didn't think we were going to have to mess with the ceiling in here.
15:11All right.
15:11Not great news.
15:12Not the worst news.
15:13No.
15:14Anyone who's ever renovated a house before knows it's like one of the more stressful things
15:18you can do.
15:19I do this as my full-time job, so I think I underestimated how much it would take, because
15:23I've never renovated a house with young children, and it's just a lot.
15:27So these issues are pretty par for the course, but they are hitting me extra hard right now.
15:35Luckily, the painting is moving ahead in the family room, and Josh's crew made quick work
15:39of the ceiling repairs, which means that we can start painting upstairs.
16:12Hi, Sarah.
16:12I want that little empty space under the stairs for a little cubby.
16:15I want it to feel kind of like an interior playhouse vibe, you know?
16:20I can see it.
16:20It's just one of those opportunities to really make something do double duty and also have
16:26that playfulness that I just want instilled in our home.
16:30It's the same reason I'm putting a disco ball in our family room.
16:33I want my kids to grow up in a home that has quirks and is fun and has color within
16:39reason.
16:40What about lights?
16:41Have you thought about receptacles or lights?
16:45Huh.
16:45It's funny that you're asking me that, because there's no plan for lights right now.
16:49Okay.
16:49All of my image boards for this bedroom had sconces within each little cubby, but when
16:55I had to do electrical for my electricians, that was like months and months and months
16:59ago, and I didn't have this design yet.
17:02Is it too late to do that?
17:04It's never too late, but there'll be some...
17:07Like that spirit.
17:08Yeah, there you go.
17:08It's never too late.
17:09Not the end of the world.
17:09Okay.
17:10We can still do it.
17:10Here, these are for you.
17:12Thank you very much.
17:12I measure the space.
17:13When I do client work, I am so on top of everything, and I'm not as organized on mine.
17:19Do you have a pen on you?
17:20I'm going to go this way.
17:20I got a pencil.
17:22Aha.
17:22There we go.
17:22The man bun comes in the clutch.
17:24Now it's figuring out how much do I care.
17:26Do I just go without them, or do I undo some work and get the electricians back in so that
17:32we can run sconces?
17:33I mean, ugh.
17:35I've already done this much work and spent this much money.
17:37What's a couple hundred more, right?
17:39Ugh.
17:40But yeah, I need sconces.
17:41Five-eighths?
17:42Are you kidding me?
17:43Yeah.
17:44That's four different dimensions you've given me, Adam.
17:46Yes.
17:47Makes it a bit more challenging building that, but that's fine.
17:50Thanks, Adam.
18:02Listen, man, I really appreciate your help with this.
18:04No worries.
18:05It's quite a gargantuan project, but with a little help from your friends, we can get
18:11it done.
18:11My project is the kids' playhouse for the boys.
18:14I've called in some reinforcements.
18:16Oh, yeah.
18:16Look at those holes in the floor.
18:18Yeah.
18:19It's got a few holes here and there, namely everywhere.
18:22This is my project.
18:24This is yours, man.
18:24Sarah's got the house.
18:26Yeah.
18:26This is my house.
18:27The ultimate goal here with this space is to make it fun, inviting, safe.
18:33All right, man.
18:34It's good to work.
18:35Let's do it.
18:45I've called in Kate.
18:49Hello.
18:50For some heavy-duty design consultations.
18:54You gave me a ring?
18:55We need your help.
18:57Okay.
18:58A place to play cars, a place to draw.
19:00Okay.
19:00So, like, maybe, like, a little kid's table?
19:02Yeah.
19:03Some chairs?
19:04Yeah.
19:04I think Maude might have some ideas.
19:05Oh, yes.
19:06I'm going to see if maybe she's got some input here that she could consult on.
19:11Perfect.
19:15I've given myself five weeks to complete these three spaces so I can get my family in here before
19:21the winter, and two weeks have already completely flown by.
19:25But the floors have been laid, and the three walls already have primer on them, so hopefully
19:31no more surprises.
19:32Fingers crossed.
19:33Whoa!
19:34Hey, look who's here.
19:36This looks like the room is painted, not primed.
19:38It is primed.
19:39This is essentially the color that it's going.
19:41People are terrified of painting rooms black, including my own husband, but I am really
19:49confident that this is the right solution here in our family room.
19:52It actually is going to make the room feel cozier, kind of like a warm hug.
19:57He just has to trust me.
19:58The floor is in.
20:00Ta-da!
20:00This looks great.
20:02Yep.
20:02Miles has assured me that this will get refinished and stained to look exactly the
20:07same as the rest of the refinished floors.
20:09Yep.
20:09We haven't talked about the ceiling yet.
20:10Yeah.
20:11We have a little bit of a box happening up here, which has to come down.
20:16That's not cool.
20:17Because this fireplace box, it's not confirming to any safety guidelines.
20:28But we passed the wet certification when we bought the house.
20:34So in this fireplace world, whatever you take apart, you can't really just stick it back
20:39together again.
20:40Because when they didn't know what was in there, you pass.
20:43But once you actually know, it's out of date.
20:45Correct.
20:46Yeah, it does look pretty old school.
20:47It does.
20:49Well, kind of, not even old school.
20:51Homemade.
20:52Homemade.
20:52Interesting.
20:52You know, so...
20:53That's the worst kind.
20:54Yeah.
20:55And now there's something wrong with the fireplace.
20:56That was like the one thing that we were keeping in this room.
20:59It wasn't supposed to cost me any more money.
21:00But when it comes down to it, you don't mess with fireplaces.
21:03I'm actually not even going to ask questions.
21:05I'm just going to say, how much?
21:06Okay, go.
21:07So safety first.
21:08Yes, always.
21:10And so we need to do this correct.
21:11That reminds me, I have to pick some tile for the hearth.
21:14I keep forgetting about, like, there's too much to do.
21:16This tiny little patch of tile is, like, keeps slipping my mind.
21:20This tile is like a thorn in my side.
21:23I cannot seem to carve out the time to pick it out, and yet it needs to get done.
21:32I need to source the tile as well as bedding and textiles for the three spaces.
21:37Like, look at my car.
21:40I just don't even know where anything is anymore.
21:42I just feel right now like I am hemorrhaging money.
21:47I am a very frugal person.
21:49Like, I'm very good at, like, saving money and buying things on sale.
21:52And, like, right now I'm like, who needs $30,000?
21:55Do you need $30,000?
21:56Do you need $30,000?
21:57Like, it's keeping me up at night, and I don't have enough time to get it back on track.
22:04I used to be able to do these kind of renos more cost-effectively, because it was like, you would
22:09think about resale.
22:10We're investing in this home because we want it to be ours.
22:14Oh, I'm crumbling.
22:15I'm running out of time.
22:17But at least this was the fabric sample I was looking for.
22:19It's a win.
22:21One tiny win.
22:29All right.
22:30You want to help me get the stuff out of the back, Maude?
22:32Yeah, sure.
22:34Today, I'm bringing my boss, Maude, to help me with the clubhouse.
22:39All right.
22:40I'll carry the chair.
22:41Oh, that's perfect.
22:42I think Jack and Louie are going to really like their playhouse.
22:45You think so?
22:45And I also think that she knows Jack and Louie better than I know Jack and Louie, so I really
22:51appreciate her insight on this space.
22:54Let's look and see what we've got to work with here.
22:56Try this one in there, too.
22:57I like the blanket on that one.
22:58Yeah, it's kind of fuzzy, right?
23:00Yeah.
23:00Sarah is really working with a cozy, colorful vibe in her family room and her boys' rooms, so I'm kind
23:06of taking that idea.
23:08Oh, you're doing a great job.
23:09Maybe I should bring you more often to help me style these jobs.
23:12I think it makes sense to tie the shutters into the actual siding on the house itself, so I kind
23:18of picked that sooty black-blue circle.
23:21What are you putting on there, Maude?
23:22Is that how you draw a satellite dish?
23:24Oh, yeah, that's pretty good.
23:26Hey, Maude, thanks so much for helping me today.
23:29It's my pleasure.
23:30It was your pleasure?
23:33While Kate and Maude are putting the finishing touches on the playhouse, I had the workers remove the satellite dish
23:39from the farmhouse roof.
23:40I'm touching it up with a little bit of spray paint, and I'm going to install it on the playhouse
23:45roof, and it's going to blow Jack's mind.
23:51Call Justin Rutledge.
23:53Calling Justin Rutledge.
23:54Hello.
23:55Hi, babe.
23:56I'm on my way home, finally.
24:00Oh, jeez.
24:01Long day?
24:01Yeah, a bit of a long day.
24:02I got the grocery list, though.
24:04I'll pick that up.
24:05What's wrong?
24:06Anything?
24:07Anything okay?
24:08How can you tell that with my voice alone?
24:11I know.
24:12I just don't.
24:13I haven't picked out tile yet.
24:14I still need something special for Jack's room, and I guess I just feel at this point we're, like, hemorrhaging
24:20money,
24:20because we're renting a place while we're paying a mortgage, while we're paying for, like, insurance that's, like, twice as
24:28much as what it regularly is, because it's construction insurance.
24:31Three times as much, actually.
24:33Three times?
24:34Oh, God.
24:35I've renovated our own home before.
24:37I've started a design firm before.
24:39I've been a mom, but I've never done all three at the same time.
24:45Yeah, that's a lot of work.
24:46I feel like I don't see the boys anymore.
24:48I feel like I'm failing as a mom.
24:50Like, it just, I just kind of feel like I'm failing.
25:01I just kind of feel like I'm failing.
25:05You're not failing as a mother.
25:07You're not failing.
25:08We're in the home stretch, and I know you're feeling it, but just know that I've got the kids.
25:13You just focus on what you're doing right now, because it's, you're doing it all for us.
25:19I am, yeah.
25:20You know, and on that note, don't worry about the groceries.
25:23I got it.
25:24I'll take care of that, and I'll have dinner ready for you to get home.
25:27Aw, babe.
25:30Oh, I'm sorry.
25:31I feel like I'm losing it.
25:32I love you so much.
25:33I love you too.
25:34Justin is the one that is keeping my head above water.
25:37I'll see you soon.
25:39You too, bye.
25:40He knew exactly what I needed to hear, and I wouldn't be able to do this without his support.
26:00It's a new day.
26:02I had a good night's sleep last night.
26:04I even found the time to pick the tile for the hearth for Justin's wood-burning fireplace.
26:09I'm feeling stronger.
26:10I'm feeling a little bit more emotionally centered.
26:14I feel even better because I can kind of distract myself a little bit with some creative energy.
26:18I'm going to work on the DIY I'm doing for Louie's bedroom, that really great birdcage light.
26:24Slow down, feel run around.
26:27Take a breath, blow the bubbles right up into the air we breathe.
26:31Bringing in chrome when my main accent in this house is brass was just going to look a little too
26:37out of place.
26:37This will make it look a little bit more like an intentional light fixture as opposed to literally a birdcage
26:44hanging from the ceiling.
26:48Mental note for moving forward, I really need to design in DIY projects for myself for these little moments of
26:55zen.
26:56It's really helping me.
27:02Justin told me that his playhouse is on schedule, which means that at least one of us is hitting our
27:08targets.
27:08But inside, I am seeing some progress.
27:14I still have some very important decor items to source.
27:17So I'm heading out to Westlake, which is about 10 minutes southwest of Picton.
27:22I got a perfectly timed call from Kate today.
27:26She told me that her and Joe are stopping by McCool's.
27:28They're doing a little bit of sourcing.
27:30This is exactly the push I needed because I am looking for some inspo right now, design-wise, for my
27:37boys' rooms.
27:38And McCool's is always a one-stop shop for that.
27:40Well, look what the cat dragged in.
27:43Hi, guys.
27:44Hi.
27:44That doesn't sound like a happy hi.
27:46I'm just, I'm, I'm in it.
27:48Well, how can we help you?
27:49I think the family room, I haven't been able to source a couch yet.
27:53I have an idea of the kind of couch I want in the family room, something mid-century modern, something
27:58that's darker.
27:59I was considering going to a boat anyway, so I wonder if maybe they have something.
28:04I'll send you the dimensions of what the limitation is.
28:07Otherwise, it's just little, like, fun things.
28:10I don't know.
28:11Jack's really into sea creatures right now, like sharks, octopus, like those kind of things.
28:16Okay, yep.
28:17I just need something that is going to bring the character, something that's fun, something that has a little bit
28:24of a wow factor.
28:26For my boys, I just really want to draw out their sense of wonderment.
28:30I don't want to add this onto your plate, but, like, just keep your eyes out.
28:33I take any excuse to go shopping, literally.
28:36Thanks, babes.
28:37Okay.
28:38Okay.
28:38Okay.
28:38Good luck in there.
28:39I'll see if Cindy has anything left.
28:44I love working with these women.
28:46The dividing and conquering of Kate's going to take on this, Joe's going to take on that.
28:51Just getting that little bit off my plate.
28:53Ask for help.
28:54Wish I asked for it earlier.
28:55Maybe would have been further ahead on these spaces.
28:58I think she said sea animals.
29:01Sarah, do you think shark, crab, or whale?
29:04Oh, Joe, that's so good.
29:06Definitely the shark.
29:07Jack will love that.
29:10Jack will love that.
29:10So,Ꟍ, I'll walk in the pouring rain.
29:13I can drink, when you say my name.
29:17Let me go, I can feel this way.
29:21Okay.
29:23Jackpot.
29:24The color is perfect.
29:26I think this is it.
29:28Oh, and Kate, two.
29:30Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
29:32That looks great.
29:33Okay, that looks perfect, period.
29:36Like, I need two of me right now.
29:38And so it turns out that I have two best buddies,
29:41and that's probably even better than two of me.
29:43Cindy, you have a three-tiered globe lamp?
29:46I do. Would it be good for Jack's room?
29:48I did not know I was looking for this all my life.
29:52Sold.
29:54Lightly reflected in the sun's fresh light.
30:00My feet in the earth's bright crowning energy.
30:04I am very excited to get to the house today.
30:07This is a real turning point.
30:09The walls have already been painted.
30:11The floors have been refinished upstairs.
30:14In Jack's room, the ceiling and the medallion
30:17have been painted the same blacky blue as the family room.
30:20And in Louie's room, the wallpaper mural is going up.
30:26The family room's really coming together now, too.
30:29Hey, guys.
30:31Hey, guys.
30:31Tim, Chris.
30:32This is looking good.
30:33The style of the light is my vibe.
30:34I love this light.
30:35I've used it before a lot.
30:37And I just find it's really bringing in the mid-century modern vibe to that space.
30:42There we go.
30:44It's exciting.
30:45We've also got maybe an unexpected element, which is a built-in disco ball.
30:50It's funny, because in this room, there was an existing pendant in the corner over there.
30:56And I didn't know what to do with it until brilliance struck.
30:59And I was like, well, obviously, it needs to be a hardwired disco ball.
31:03My wood-burning fireplace is back in.
31:07This is great.
31:07These little bits of playfulness that I kind of want my boys to grow up with.
31:13You know, nothing's too serious.
31:15It's always time for a dance party.
31:17Now, Chris, like, I just want you to, like, show me that it's working.
31:25All right, guys.
31:27So, Daddy says he has a surprise for us today.
31:31The surprise is mostly for these knuckleheads here.
31:34Well, I'll take that.
31:36Yes.
31:36Is it that the siding is done?
31:38Siding's in, yeah.
31:39Oh, that looks so good.
31:41This is such a weight lifted off my shoulders.
31:43Now everything can happen.
31:44This is amazing.
31:45The envelope of our home is done.
31:48But the kids aren't as excited about the siding as I am, are they?
31:51No, that's not the main attraction.
31:53I wonder where it could be.
32:00I see it!
32:00I wonder where it could be.
32:01I see it!
32:02I wonder where it could be.
32:03I see it!
32:03My satellite!
32:04Can you see Louie?
32:05I love the way Jack notices the satellite from around the corner.
32:09Go check it out!
32:10Go check out your playhouse!
32:17I love you!
32:19This is amazing!
32:20I know.
32:21It's something special for you.
32:22It's so cute!
32:23The structure was there, but as you remember, it was pretty.
32:26The floor was non-existent.
32:27It was non-existent.
32:28Yeah.
32:28There were nails everywhere.
32:29Adam helped me out.
32:30We put a new plywood floor in, put new walls, a new ceiling, painted it, and then Kate and
32:36Maude did all the fishes.
32:38Yeah.
32:39And they did a little sign.
32:40Welcome Jack and Louie.
32:41Welcome Jack and Louie.
32:42Yeah.
32:45It's so clean in here now.
32:47Yeah.
32:48And it feels safe.
32:49We took the windows out.
32:51Yes.
32:51Smart.
32:52Yeah.
32:52Because this was just like a hot box in here.
32:55Very hot!
32:56Go!
32:56Whoa!
32:57I love your puppetry, Louie.
33:00You have your very own satellite.
33:02Can I get them?
33:02You fit!
33:03Yeah!
33:04That's so cool!
33:05Wow.
33:06Daddy really outdid himself.
33:08Hey.
33:09This is really special.
33:11Oh, this is a good reminder what we're doing all this for.
33:14Yes.
33:15I think I needed this right now.
33:33The mural is finished in Louie's room, and the electrical for the sconces has been installed.
33:39The walls have been repaired, and Adam, who's been working on this custom bunk bed for Louie's bedroom, can bring
33:45that in and start installing.
33:47Adam!
33:48Hey!
33:49Oh, this looks so good!
33:52Awesome!
33:53This looks even more fun than I expected.
33:55It feels like a jungle gym or something.
33:57Yeah, super solid, too.
33:58I love how you sort of executed the little cubbies there.
34:02And then do you want to see the arch, what it's going to look like as well?
34:06Yes.
34:07See, this is that little detail that makes it feel more like a clubhouse as opposed to just a bed.
34:15That's so cool.
34:16Yeah, it's pretty awesome.
34:17As much as I've been thinking I haven't put as much energy and time into my own project, the time
34:22that I have spent was worth it, and I am starting to see the payoff of that.
34:41So, how do you want to lay this out, Sarah?
34:44Good question.
34:45This is really big.
34:46I am at the styling stage of my boys' bedrooms in the family room.
34:50This room kind of feels like the most mid-century room in the house.
34:55It definitely is, and that is born out of the fact that a lot of this is furniture that I
35:01already had.
35:02So, the only new thing in this room is actually the closet and the queen bed frame, which is the
35:08perfect color of blue.
35:10It matches perfectly.
35:12Can we put that in its place?
35:13Oh, yeah.
35:14This is the major piece of flair for this room.
35:17I love it.
35:18Shades, I think it's the right size, but it's too much flair on flair.
35:22That's fine.
35:23Wait, no one's done this yet?
35:24I can't believe no one's done this.
35:28The black makes sense because they've got black drapes.
35:32I think the black's the winner.
35:33Yeah.
35:34And this actually will work perfectly in Louie's room.
35:37There's something about these spaces, because it's where my boys are going to sleep at night, and it's their bedrooms,
35:44that feels like a real imprint on this house as our home.
35:50Let's get the beds set up.
35:54Louie's space is a little softer in its colorway.
35:58It's a little bit more of a pastel take on primary colors, whereas Jack's is a little bit more true
36:05to primary colors.
36:06So, the two spaces are going to look very different, but very Jack and Louie.
36:11Wow.
36:12Ooh.
36:13Well, this is a huge improvement.
36:16I know.
36:16The sofa's great.
36:17It's so good.
36:19It looks so good.
36:20I can totally handle this from here on out, actually.
36:23Go home.
36:24Be with your families.
36:24Oh.
36:25This is the last minute little stuff, and you know I'm going to obsess over every little detail, because I'm
36:29going to show it to Justin tomorrow.
36:31Oh, my gosh.
36:31I'm really excited for him to see it.
36:33So good.
36:34Thank you so much.
36:34I will hang behind and finish this up.
36:37The paint color on the wall made such a huge difference.
36:41That fireplace is finally back where it belongs.
36:44$5,000 later, my husband will be happy.
36:47This is big.
36:48These three spaces are all for my family, and I'm starting to really be able to envision my family in
36:55this home, and that's really special.
37:10I'm so excited to show you these spaces, and I really wanted the chance to show you first before we
37:16bring the boys.
37:17I can't wait to see it.
37:24Yes.
37:25I'm so excited to show you some time.
37:33Yeah?
37:34Oh, my God.
37:40It's outstanding.
37:42Oh, yes!
37:50wood burning fireplace you have a wood burning fireplace this is my one ask your one ask oh
37:56thank you the fireplace was really my jumping off point of the directions I can go with color
38:01yeah and the tile work looks beautiful this is beautiful it's black cozy like you said
38:11and I love the way it plays off the brick yeah new floors in here stunning and we have a

41:25I was like this can't be so hard to do yeah I found this birdcage light on a marketplace online
41:32spray-painted it white and then with some sticks from our property and these little clip-on birds
41:37instantly it becomes a birdcage light it's amazing it's really taken on this playful forest jungle yeah
41:45vibe in here without getting overly themey really playful but also really restful yeah running the
