AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish warns of the heightened risk of damaging winds and hail in the southern U.S. as another round of severe storms tracks across the country starting on Tuesday afternoon.
Transcript
00:00Most of the time, if you have even a moderate to strong cold front, roll through the plains
00:05or the central U.S. in May.
00:07You're talking about severe weather, and that's what we have again this week.
00:10Now, our front's going to be pushing farther south for Tuesday afternoon and evening, looking
00:13for severe storms to break out near Dallas, up into areas around central and northern
00:18Arkansas, even into far western parts of Tennessee.
00:21Now, the greatest risk here with this setup will be damaging wind and some very large
00:25hail in a few cases.
00:27But for many, moderate-sized hail, about one inch in diameter, will be a very common
00:32occurrence with this storm.
00:33Some areas could see larger than that, though, by a big margin.
00:36And damaging wind will be a concern Tuesday afternoon and night as well.
00:39Isolated tornadoes will break out, and progressively through the rest of this week, we're going
00:43to see a heightening risk of flash flooding, relatively low risk of that for Tuesday, but
00:48it's going to step up due to the repetitive nature of the storms through the course of
00:51the week.
00:52There's also a small risk for severe storms, by the way, up into the interior northeast
00:55and northern New England on Tuesday as well.
00:58Wednesday, a new round of storms breaks out for many into the interior southeast as the
01:04tail of that front hangs out in that general zone.
01:07So we're going to be keeping an eye out for some strong storms again, parts of far east
01:10Texas, northern Louisiana, into the north-central part of Mississippi for Wednesday and into
01:14Wednesday night, places like Shreveport, Monroe, Louisiana, Greenville, Mississippi, and Tupelo
01:20will face some of the greatest hazards with that.
01:22And that front then moves farther east for Thursday with some strong to severe thunderstorms
01:26from the southern part of the Delmarva Peninsula, southeast Virginia, and the eastern Carolinas,
01:31where there's some meaningful drought relief, but also some gusty storms.
