Shan and Bobby took a look at the behind-the-scenes footage and audio from the 2026 NFL Draft war rooms. They discussed how Stephen Jones operated as the leader during negotiations, debated the intensity of the trade with Miami, shared their thoughts on the pursuit of Caleb Downs, and more.
Transcript
00:00behind the scenes of the draft and they basically tried to get with the teams that had two picks so
00:06they got inside the war room for Cleveland, the Cowboys, Chiefs, and I can't even really
00:16I mean it was it was really focused it felt like around the Browns, the Cowboys, and then
00:21every kind of individual pick around that they had a little bit of stuff in there from the Raiders
00:25war room a lot of Schefter just on the phone working things which I kind of wondered I don't
00:32know about you did you watch any of that and go like does Schefter want that out there that even
00:36if you're not identifying who he's talking to on the other end that he was talking about Cleveland's
00:40going to do this they're going to do this and then somebody in Cleveland you're like don't tell
00:44Schefter anything anymore what the hell is that why is he why is he turning that out to another team
00:47he knows no but to another team might be a little yeah little much yeah so before we get to
00:53the
00:53audio we have three pieces of audio I think it's riveting and I am guilty of overhyping what
01:00happened because I'm just I'm euphoric and I can't watch enough Caleb Downs I can't watch enough
01:07Christian Parker I can't wait for Oxnard which I never say there's a moment before this thing kicked
01:14off between Schottenheimer and Jerry and they're just like hey man I love you I respect you and Jerry
01:22basically said to Shoddy I want to be the last thing by the way for anyone who still sticks with
01:30this
01:30dumb old stale Jerry Jones meddler interferes narrative watch this now Jerry may mess up the
01:39contract extensions but when it comes to drafting and I assume free agent signing watch how much he
01:47sits back he is the third most vocal fourth most vocal or active in the room Stephen Jones is the
01:58leader here number one and I want to know at the end truthfully if you can be FAF and give
02:03Stephen
02:04some props you got will also work in the phone with the other teams it's not just Stephen making
02:10the calls then you got Schottenheimer and Jerry I think you know is is fourth in terms of and and
02:17and that's a good thing by the way it destroys that narrative but basically Jerry they're all they're
02:22telling each other Jerry and Shoddy how much they love each other and Jerry's like you're the last
02:27person in here I'm worried about you be you and Jerry's like I want to be the last one in
02:32here that
02:32you're worried about so we should be last on each other's worry radar yeah and he's uh
02:39this is something we we try to talk to people about and a lot of people shoot it down and
02:44just
02:44oh must be in the pocket it's like I'm not saying it's a right way to do it or a
02:49wrong way to do it
02:49I mean I don't think it's necessarily an unhealthy structure but the reality is Jerry for the most part
02:54is a veto pen now that's what he does and and and that's out of his own choice like he's
03:00structured it
03:01that way to where he has a a brain trust a consensus there are times he doesn't agree with
03:06them and he just lets them decide anyway because it's like well I've put these people in place to
03:09to know these things so now he'll tell you the buck stops with him because he does have the veto
03:14pen
03:14so he could have told them no and could have overruled them but he let him do it so ultimately
03:18it is his decision but he uh he he uses it about as frequently as when something gets pushed through
03:23you know the the legislature then he's ultimately either going to veto it or let it go
03:28so as things were playing out with the draft the Giants are waiting to pick at five and Tennessee's
03:37on the clock everyone in Cleveland because they're waiting to see what type of move they're going to
03:42make afterwards everyone in Cleveland is guessing Arvel Reese for the Titans everyone so Reese goes where
03:48he goes you know and Schottenheimer's initial reaction before the Giants take him is three offensive
03:57players let's go he gasped when they when they took Carnell Tate he went oh he goes three and he's
04:04like fist but they that's when you could tell the energy in that whole room is a little like oh
04:07we
04:08might get somebody to fall to us Steven after Arvel goes to the Giants he goes they got four ends
04:12now
04:13they they got four ends and Cleveland is now sitting here at six and the Dallas Cowboys make a call
04:25I've heard about um Kansas Cleveland feels like it's got a deal with somebody to move back not not
04:31like they've got enough opportunities they feel like so that's that I don't know whether that's
04:37Kansas City or Dallas
04:45all right let's let's stay on the line okay I'm gonna have coup to go ahead and call it and
04:50we'll
04:51stay on the line so Chris call the news our session I get terrible Wi-Fi here hey how do
04:56I get to the
04:56alert did the alert get up
05:02all right so we're gonna read it out of six we're going to nine with Kansas City thought being uh
05:09we
05:09have three guys that we would take at this spot with Flanella Tyson and Maui Noah we go to nine
05:15we're guaranteed one of those uh positions we'll see what Washington and New Orleans do
05:24so that is Cleveland that's Cleveland moving back to Kansas City there yes I did not think I
05:30included that in mine I said disregard Bobby's audio that he said just use mine uh so now Cleveland
05:36has moved back right yep and their and their thought was part of the reason I love all this is
05:40you find out who they like so what Andrew Barry the Browns GM said is we're gonna move back we
05:47got
05:47three guys we were fine with Fano Jordan Tyson and Maui Noah and that's why the Tyson stuff was
05:55not hype we knew Dallas loved him Browns that's the first I've heard Browns loving him but Browns
05:59loved him Giants loved him Chiefs Saints took him so I mean he clearly that ended up not being smoked
06:05the league really liked him so now the Browns have moved to nine Cowboys call
06:13hard to tell what these teams need you'd have thought they need everything everybody needs
06:18everything now it was recognized throughout the NFL as one of the certainly in the top
06:26five or ten picks we went into this draft saying my goodness I know it's important to get a pass
06:33rusher
06:34but man do we need to come out of here with a real nickel you know you were holding on
06:39I mean
06:40with every pick you were uh you know thinking he could go but uh you know once it got down
06:45to you
06:46know they were getting down to the ninth and tenth pick we said hey we might have an opportunity here
06:51I knew the Giants had expressed some interest and uh certainly uh you know at that time you just
06:57really didn't know about the Dolphins the big thing is we're gonna see here real soon whether it's worth
07:06the New York Giants have submitted their pick Miami is on the call all right stop it real quick
07:11all right so this is them calling Miami we got we got some communication issues right here going on
07:17who's wearing the green dot who's wearing the green dot so I'll take the responsibility for
07:21now till the commercial break I'll double check my audio timestamps so the Cowboys call Cleveland
07:28for nine they offer nine and 24 and this is a scenario right we did these war room scenarios
07:34and uh they said we'll give you 12 and 20 for nine and 24 12 and 20 Cowboys for Cleveland's
07:45nine and
07:4524 Andrew Barry said that's light on all dimensions so we're not having that and and I didn't go to
07:55the
07:55trade chart uh like you uh have probably memorized Bob but that does feel a little bit light doesn't
08:01it that doesn't feel enough for Cleveland to do that it does uh looking at it here 1350 yeah it
08:07would be that looks like it would be short by about a about a hundred points but the word was
08:15Cleveland was so desperate to move back and that teams wanted to move back there were so many of them
08:20that they may have to take a discount so I love that Stephen offered the discount yeah which
08:25and they already had they they'd moved back that's why they were probably a little more comfortable
08:28just because like yeah we've already picked up some extra capital and Stephen even after they said no
08:33he goes fifth wouldn't help anything and nah yes Stephen offered the extra five and after they said no
08:41he said well they don't want to fall behind the Giants for an offensive lineman yes they don't want to
08:46go
08:46behind the Giants at 10 now I'm assuming now Jerry said Downs was one of four guys they would have
08:52moved up
08:53for I'm assuming that this call for nine was for Caleb yep do we know the other guys that would
09:00have moved up for Reese yeah so how far they go up yeah quote unquote would uh would would probably
09:06matter um in terms of like for instance they were not going to move up to six for Downs but
09:12they'd move
09:13up to nine or they moved like they they were within range or reason they didn't want to give up
09:17the
09:17extra first round pick anything that would cause them to lose that first round pick the second one they
09:21were not willing to do um unless it was for a bigger player so those guys would have been Downs
09:26probably Delaney and Styles and then the fourth was going to be who did the Jets leave you so whether
09:31it's just some combo of Reese or Bailey whoever doesn't get picked by the Jets at two and if they
09:36were to slide then maybe we'd call about it meanwhile Jerry is like giving a tour to people in the
09:42room
09:42like the guests that have come in yeah the special VIPs not just in the beginning when he gives like
09:48the
09:48little intro of I would not like uh my life researched with all the dirt we get on these
09:53guys I would not want that same thing done to me and then like in the midst of it and
09:57this would
09:57drive Cowboy fans crazy Jerry is still here like this is what we could be doing here depending on
10:03who's on the board he's still talking to like the guests in the war room so I watched I watched
10:08the
10:08first I watched like half of this last night at 10 30 before I went to bed um so I
10:12watched right
10:13after Dallas's pick here were they the only ones it seemed like it's that but were they the ones who
10:17gave extended post-draft wrap-up analysis from their team I think so because I didn't notice
10:24anybody else talking about like man we were so maybe spy tech from the Raiders spy tech yeah but
10:28I couldn't tell if spy techs was just generalized like Mendoza talk versus hey this is how it played
10:32out for us and we were so it felt like Steven went and sat it looked like in there in
10:37a conference room
10:38like the America's game type of interviews like they're sitting there and and do it and I knew I
10:42saw cameras in that conference room last week like a film crew was in there and I guess that's what
10:46that was for so now here's the long extended drama of dealing with the Miami Dolphins I did not know
10:54they almost missed getting the pick in listen to the communication listen to the drama listen to the
11:00execution of trying to move up with Miami certainly uh you know at that time you just really didn't know
11:07about the Dolphins the big thing is we're going to see here real soon whether it's worth it to pull
11:13up
11:16the New York Giants have submitted their pick Miami is on the clock
11:20well the first thing we'll find out if Miami wants downs
11:24that they might like to pick more than that
11:27that might but uh if they don't like downs
11:31the question is what would you give to go one spot it's 50 it's 50 on the chart which is
11:37a fit
11:37well I would if I thought Miami was going to take downs and they want downs now I'd get serious
11:42about
11:43some points but uh you're gonna give two fifths but if I'm Miami why doesn't Miami sitting there with us
11:51we've had as much written about us and downs as anybody there is in this draft all right stop right
11:56there it was a long so decipher for me what Jerry is thinking here out loud the the number one
12:03thing
12:03that I'm taking away is all right like we'll give them some real stuff here if we think that uh
12:08Miami
12:09wants downs but he's reasoning out loud why they may not take him yeah so he they're initially they're
12:15talking through about like well do we know that Miami would just take downs and I said no we and
12:20that was
12:20the biggest thing leading up to the draft nobody knew what Miami was gonna do we thought as soon
12:26as they traded Waddle every mock draft had them taking a receiver locked in done right and it was
12:30it was a little complicated because they ended up with a second first round pick obviously from the
12:33Waddle trade and so there was a thought of like well could they wait till the second one could they
12:36if Daniel Jeremiah kept saying the draft is so deep I could see the Dolphins wait until second
12:40round to get a receiver and so it just kind of varied and so teams it sounds like teams know
12:45like you hear
12:46them talking about like Giants are gonna take an offensive lineman at 10 like Dallas had a beat on what
12:50other teams were gonna be doing it's rare that they're kind of surprised they were caught off
12:54guard a little bit by oh Carnell Tate for that's surprising they're a little surprised by that
12:59and then the Dolphins Dallas just was in the dark and I think that's probably due to the new regime
13:05that was in place but Jerry's basically talking about Stephen's trying to tell him this is how much
13:10it costs and then Jerry was saying I'm willing to overpay to get him if it like like we can
13:17talk
13:17about losing on the trade chart a little if it means getting this guy which depending on the
13:21trade chart you followed they didn't lose the Miami trade they actually won on the points
13:25let's continue we knew it was a long shot if we stayed at 12 he certainly was one of four
13:32players
13:32that we had that we were ready to put some ammo to go up to get
13:39hey Kyle this is Stephen Jones hey Stephen how are you man right here in Dallas one behind you
13:45wondering are y'all gonna pick away or would you be interested what are you guys looking
13:50we'd probably throw in uh our fifth plus something
13:56go one spot
13:58no no we're gonna we're gonna stay okay we're gonna pick okay sounds good all right
14:05Miami is using all of its time here I really didn't think that so Miami shuts down the first
14:14offer of a fifth yeah and I mean you saw with the I mean with the Cleveland offer when they
14:18were
14:18no they just went nope that's it we're done and so now they did offer with the Cleveland one they
14:24offered the trade and then they immediately offered the follow-up this one they offered
14:27they tried to throw in a fifth they they offered the initial trade here to Miami and then they just
14:31they were told no it's not gonna do it and they hung up the phone and then kind of huddled
14:34again yeah
14:35and Will hands the phone over to up the ante like Will is side texting some of these teams yes
14:41yeah it's not just Stephen making the call Will is also communicating yeah so like Will was like
14:46talking to the the Browns on his cell phone and then they end up calling and so like
14:49the execution is more than just the the phones there um this is a scary moment right here yes
14:55because I think you could hear them groan I think you legitimately heard like a groan in the room when
15:00he said they said no I think you heard someone go oh like you can yeah they were because you're
15:06like
15:06they're willing to move out and then is someone else gonna jump us you know um so they're not
15:12sticking it they're not married to someone because they were willing to listen yeah actions speak
15:18louder than words they've told you they loved Tyler Guyton they told you they loved Mozzie Smith they
15:24told you they loved Tyler Smith and all those different things they've also told you they love
15:28Caleb Downs you can tell by this audio what they said post-draft what you see on the camera all
15:34those
15:34different things they they really were gonna hurt if they lost Caleb Downs they were gonna it was
15:40gonna be a gut punch to them if Caleb Downs came off the board so this is Miami saying no
15:45to the
15:46initial offer of a fifth to move up one spot Miami is using all of its time here I really
15:52didn't think
15:52that Miami in this particular case was gonna draft him but I didn't doubt a minute that somebody else
15:59would come over and trade Miami out of that spot and get him right out from under us it wasn't
16:05a hard
16:06decision to go ahead and up the ante and make sure we had him the league in general uh you
16:11know had
16:11that feeling that uh you know the draft wasn't that deep and uh blue chip type especially defensive
16:17players so you know we just decided to pull the trigger there and send the two fives
16:22uh hold on here steve they'll move back one spot you'll move back one spot for a five yeah
16:34no we do it's with 177 180 if it's two fives okay okay we got it
16:44hold on hold on guys please be quiet calling it in
16:50hello it's good hey this steven all right let's stop it we're giving him so explain what is happening
16:56here so when the trade is i'm like does steven have to do this like on his side for every
17:02single
17:02move so i i think a lot of people assume that you just call it into the league office if
17:08you're
17:09the team that's trading out like whoever's on the clock you need to inform the league
17:12that's true but the other team has to call too so basically what happens is you call into the
17:16league office and so you saw it on some of this video somebody took a call in the little command
17:21center and then there was another person who had a phone who they pick up the other line whenever it
17:24rings in but the job there is to dallas has to call with the terms of the trade miami has
17:31to call
17:32with the terms of the trade if there's anything that doesn't match in what they said there is not
17:36there's no trade wow it has to match up the story's gotta match everything has to be clear of
17:41like you can't just speak on behalf of miami and tell us who they're trading or miami can't speak
17:45on behalf of you and tell us we need confirmation that's what you wanted to do and so it removes
17:51all confusion and different things like that and so they're supposed to both call in if there's any
17:55sort of thing that's off you say this year's seventh instead of next year's seventh or something
17:59just like a misspeak then they'll say that's not the trade and you you've got to call back and
18:04like cycle through it and that's why it can be especially with eight minute clock this year
18:08it can be tight and man i want to ask steven if that can't tell the shut up that's what
18:14i would
18:15ask steven who did you sell be quiet you need that as a drop jake go ahead and get ready
18:19to re-drop
18:19that i want to know that's the that cannot be steven's own personal cell it has to be a separate
18:25cell that they have to get because if there's a spam call in the middle of this or communication or
18:31someone call waiting will one or or the big fun so they got no the cell oh yeah the cell
18:36i think
18:36that was wills it may have been stevens but yeah but steven's on a cell phone too throughout a lot
18:41of these other calls i'm like that can't be your cell yeah i don't think imagine like someone
18:45randomly calling you if choppy was gm his kids would be calling to be like uh where are my shoes
18:51like i'm working bud all right so and then the big surprise here and i had no idea i don't
18:57know if
18:58you did either bobby the clock has almost run out on them now the minnesota vikings were famous for
19:03this i think two times in a row i remember it happening once for sure because it caused chaos
19:09it caused the draft to actually move fast in the first round one year they didn't get it in on
19:13time
19:13and that allows the next team to jump you and make your pick imagine if you execute all this well
19:19we'll play the audio first this is behind the scenes uh draft first round on espn
19:26hey steven we're giving them our pick number 12 and we're giving them 177 180 miami
19:34okay yep are we good yes
19:41we got 10 seconds two seconds
19:47then it's us on the clock get it in pause there real quick so that is the one point there's
19:55a
19:55little bit of urgency to get it in but as i'm trying to figure out who was talking in the
19:59background
19:59but they're trying to say the clock runs out it's not a big deal we're on the clock then and
20:02then we
20:02run the picket so then we don't have to trade and so they're getting the trade in and they're trying
20:08to call it in but it is one of those things where it's like logistically if it doesn't go through
20:11in
20:12these last couple seconds we're on the clock oh my god and so you think there was a fight between
20:16philly and pittsburgh that now that would have got it because they're mic'd they're mic'd up
20:21so if they get caught in that moment intentionally stalling they would get in trouble so they weren't
20:28suggesting it wasn't like a thing of like let's do this it was more just the reality of like hey
20:33we've called it in but if miami doesn't call it in in time or something like we're up anyway and
20:39so
20:39then we we don't lose capital because they didn't call it in in time that's what happened in minnesota
20:42minnesota was on the phone for a trade and they they couldn't get off the phone with baltimore in
20:46time and they missed and that's when they got jumped by two teams they're turning it in we got
20:5110 seconds two seconds it's us on the clock it's us on the clock better hurry up and get it
20:55in
20:58dallas has submitted its pick miami is on the clock caleb downs
21:11great job not a good job great job will will's had it
21:23this is amazing first off there was like too much of a pause and gap in there
21:28after steven said caleb downs i don't know whether that was technical delay broadcasting or
21:34the room was so stunned or ever steven had scared the hell out of everyone by saying shut up
21:39uh but he says caleb downs there's a gap they explode shoddy goes to jerry phenomenal job with
21:46the execution and poor will mcclay looked like he needed a cigarette yeah he needed a cigarette and
21:51a beer he's laid back in his chair like that took every ounce of life out of me it's riveting
21:58dramatic incredible every part of the reason that i love the draft and when you're on that
22:02coverage and y'all get that war room view to try to decipher everything that's happening yeah and
22:07even when you watch it you don't get a sense seeing it on the war room that it was as
22:10like stressful as it was there like you see them on the phone but they don't look like super panicked
22:15on their faces they're clearly there's urgency here we're trying to get stuff done but it doesn't
22:20have like a visual like that but i mean it's it's something that it when i saw watching this last
22:25night it made me just go like to be and i know we've always said this but to be a
22:29fly on the wall
22:30in every one of these war rooms in that first round yeah just living and dying with the because
22:35somebody else lost their caleb downs and it may have been caleb but somebody else was watching
22:39the draft board fall and was having those same conversations and it didn't come through and how
22:43sick did they sound in their war room when that guy came off the board this would have been crushing
22:47if any one of these little minor details and aspects ended up like costing you miami picked downs
22:53there they would have just been beside well if they offer the fifth it's like you know you got
22:59a great deal and you undercut someone and then boom it's sold to someone else and you're like
23:06if i would offer what i was willing to go to initially it could have been mine so if they
23:10offer the initial fifth and miami says no someone else jumps them by giving something else and you lose
23:18out on that it would have haunted them that they just didn't give the two fifths to begin with
23:22yes you know what i mean yeah that little minor detail but for for all those who and we'll hear
23:28some more of it i don't know if we'll do it now or later but you know we'll hear some
23:31more of it
23:31obviously in the way they work the phones there's a thought i think from a lot of people that the
23:38cowboys when they get their trades and they've lost trade negotiations before they've lost contract
23:42negotiations before but that they are just picking up the phone and going to the very top offer right
23:48away and it's like well at least here's two instances of you saw them calling cleveland
23:53with an offer told no all right we'll bump it a little okay no all right well we're not gonna
23:57cross that fine miami calling them not getting it and then going all right here so they're not just
24:01jumping to here's the best possible offer like i think a lot of people assume the cowboys do a lot
24:07of times that they're just over eager in the aggressiveness they're they're working the phones
24:10and working compensation just like all the other teams do all right now let's get to commercial free
24:16expressway sean and bobby choppy and pepe out we got jacob ray uh running things in the producer
24:21chair now this is the eagles back and forth which caused them to move back and still get their guy
24:30in malachi lawrence who's the best candidates if you were them on earth gotta play yeah
24:37coming to our 20 to move to 20 yeah philly just call howard steve just call howard
24:45oh well he's gonna if you call we're gonna be giving the six i'm hoping he'll call and say
24:50we'll do the two fours we got time we got a few minutes or not like we're down to 20
24:55seconds we
24:56are you trying to call me i tell him i'm calling you hello howie howie hey this is steven how
25:13you doing
25:13man our seventh next year we just uh we're good no we don't want to we're already giving up picks
25:27for this year we're out of we're out of picks but anyway we for sure do it for the two
25:34fours
25:36i'll throw you a next year seven okay we got a deal we got a deal hey wow silly code
25:44all right
25:45stop it so that's the back and forth with howie roseman and that's that's why the cowboys have said
25:51when jerry talks about when you pick up the phone you lose on the trade they're talking about when
25:56you trade back they know they got to pick up the phone to call when they're trading up so they're
26:00generally talking about when you're on the clock and you pick up the phone you're losing and steven
26:04talking about it they're saying if this is our pick we're supposed to hold the power if we pick
26:08up the phone and we call philly and we're like a little eager then we're going to be we're going
26:12to be giving a sixth back to them as part of this instead i want them to just take the
26:16two fours and
26:16in the end they didn't just get the flat two fours but they did give up a seventh next year
26:20and so
26:21that's kind of the thought is that they think if they pick up the phone and call howie howie roseman
26:25goes gotcha no you're going to be a little more than the seventh you're you're going to give me
26:28something more because you clearly want to get out of that spot yeah but i just don't like it when
26:32the
26:32cowboys don't make the call like you still have to call like how how he needed to move up more
26:39than
26:39they needed to move back yeah so typically when you're on the clock like for instance we saw it
26:43when the browns were on the clock teams called them when when the chiefs you know when teams are
26:47on the clock generally it is you're kind of in the position of power of like i'm on the clock
26:50we'll
26:51know if people want to come up or not otherwise we're trying to convince them to come up and then
26:54we're just paying through the nose so this is makai lemon on the phone with pittsburgh now in one of
27:01the athletic recaps which we may get to at 840 they wrote in here they blame pittsburgh for
27:07prematurely calling makai lemon nick harris blew up uh with the report that the steelers are pissed
27:14that they're furious because they thought that the cowboys may have done them dirty with this whole
27:18transaction yeah but i mean it's and that's the reality is that dallas was not off the clock you
27:23don't need to go call it like you you should not be calling players now does that happen occasionally
27:26i'm sure it does like maybe you know somebody's not taking anybody but if once philly calls and
27:31wants to come up that that's an entirely a pittsburgh execution problem and mccarthy teams have problems
27:36executing so this is uh this is makai on the phone with pittsburgh and he notices philadelphia
27:45trying to dial in hey wow silly code oh philly just traded for you hello this is philly they just
27:54traded for you this is howard roseman i'm the gm of the eagles how you doing we just traded up
28:00we're picking you you're an eagle congrats brother let's do it it's getting quite good boom there it is
28:08i would love the video in the pittsburgh war room oh which we've only seen them they've shown some video
28:13of them on the phone but they've not like given any audio or shown their reaction when they find
28:18out philly's up there and i think that's probably for a reason yeah um so there it is that was
28:23on espn
28:24i was obsessed with this last night uh so good job getting the audio i still think i'm gonna get
28:30a
28:31victory over you here in this commercial mate is this a w for me or w for you i will
28:35find out oh
28:36i think he i think he feels good about his position uh so um other other things in this
28:44number one we have to get everyone's steven impression on the franklin franco fan obviously
28:49because he has a nice calm light-hearted demeanor mixed in with the yo everyone be quiet
28:56schottenheimer was stunned over ty simpson the whole room is like still celebrating
29:02the rams take ty simpson and shoddy's trying to like tell everyone like yo guys look look look
29:08look the rams the rams took simpson schottenheimer did confirm they had lawrence over allen and shoddy
29:16was really the loudest voice in the room based upon this footage he said lawrence can be a difference
29:24maker we were all excited about this guy it seemed like schottenheimer was the one really pushing
29:28for malachi to be the selection um and i think he was pushing on behalf of christian parker
29:35in that moment i i mean it's obviously brian may have felt that way shoddy may have felt that way
29:41but like i think it's also just hey i'm in here as using my voice i know who my guy
29:45wants so i'm gonna
29:45go to i'm i'm up here to advocate for him and go to bat for him what were the biggest
29:49things you learned
29:50from this and touch on stephen jones stephen jones is the one operating all all of it yeah and and
29:57so
29:57i i think yeah in terms of execution how they move around like stephen's clearly in control
30:03when it comes to i don't know that it showed and did a fantastic job i don't know that it
30:07showed
30:07completely how much will has a voice in there and what he does because obviously logistically they're
30:13trying to just show execution more than anything but when they're talking players up there instead of
30:18just the logistics of moving around for trade it's going to be heavy on will um but i think that
30:23yeah it's it it is a good reflection for stephen of just i i think it shows him as being
30:30more in
30:31command than people sometimes assume that he is that like i think again people assume dallas is going
30:37to get taken for a ride on calls negotiations whether that's contracts trades whatever i was worried
30:41about this with the eight minutes i was really really worried he he proved me wrong very like looks
30:46very patient and unconcerned and just like you know what like we can we can ride this out a little
30:51bit let's we're not gonna panic tell in the room y'all shut up like we're trying to get on
30:55top of this
30:56so i think that that was a big impression and also the biggest thing for me was you know publicly
31:02what
31:02they said and you can visibly see them celebrating i think when you hear how excited they are and you
31:08hear
31:08them talking about it you can tell caleb downs is so different for them than anybody they've picked
31:12recently in terms of just i was surprised they weren't more upset when they couldn't move up
31:19with cleveland and then i was expecting even more panic when miami said no to the first fifth
31:25yeah and they did call back to up the ante or will will was texting it sounded like yeah it
31:30sounded
31:30like there was a text conversation going up in the ante and then he called to finalize like confirm
31:34like hey we're doing this right um but it's i think that that they can't panic right like they've
31:40probably been through this what 40 times i mean jerry and steven have been through this 40 times
31:45they've probably sat in there enough times and had enough times where it did blow up on them and other
31:49times it didn't where they recognize you got to kind of be level here when you're approaching this
