00:00So Jalen Thompson, Bobby, previewed him and predicted it is your new safety coming on over from Arizona.
00:06It's a three-year, $36 million deal.
00:10Familiarity with your secondary coach, Ryan Smith.
00:13And this is Brian Broaddus, last week in Surprise, on the G-Bag Nation,
00:18going and doing that extra homework that he does, previewing Jalen Thompson,
00:24just going and studying three games of film, just for the heck of it, before he signed.
00:28Free safety with the Cardinals.
00:30I think that's where you would play him with the Cowboys, is play him as a free safety.
00:36But you could watch him against the Saints to open the season, watch him against the 49ers,
00:42watch him against the Cowboys.
00:45This guy, I mean, he answers a lot of questions for you as far as your ability to have a,
00:53you know, if you want a two-deep safety, you want the single high safety,
00:57you want the safety that plays in the slot, you want the safety that kind of can come down
01:02and play in the middle, like take away crossing routes like a robber.
01:07This guy's a really, he's a, he's a...
01:09You're saying he can do all those things?
01:10He can do all those things.
01:12And I'm watching him...
01:13No wonder he got 12 mil.
01:14Yeah, and I'm watching him play, Dawson, and I'm thinking like,
01:17well, gosh dang, why would you not want a guy like this?
01:21So just right off the rip, I'm, you know, I'll do some more research and stuff on it,
01:26but for the three games that I got to watch this morning,
01:29I was really impressed of how he gets involved with tackling.
01:35He, you know, he does it, he doesn't like one of these guys,
01:37it's like something will break down and he'll step up in the hole and make a play.
01:42And so if you're telling me that he's one of these guys that's available
01:47and Dallas likes him, then by all means, let's explore this one a little bit further
01:54and see where we're at.
01:56Because he could do a lot of things for you defensively,
02:00and he doesn't, he looks like a cerebral player when you watch him interact
02:06and then go and make plays.
02:08Yeah.
02:08He didn't get caught out of position and, you know, he's chasing, you know,
02:12chasing, you know, misdirection and he's over somewhere else.
02:17I was pretty impressed with him overall.
02:21He's a really good player.
02:22I mean, they got, that is not just a, that's not just a signing of like,
02:28there you go, we signed somebody.
02:30You happy?
02:31Like, I mean, that's a player that legitimately helps them.
02:33And I don't know how many people were totally aware of him
02:36because he was playing in the secondary for the awful Cardinals the last few years.
02:39Well, Cardinals secondary and safety is Buda Baker.
02:43Yeah.
02:43And that's a, Buda's the guy.
02:45Now, but I mean, Jalen Thompson is such a strong, steady player.
02:50They definitely had circled him before the free agent process and made up in their mind,
02:56all right, we're going to pursue here and really address something that we need in a big, big way.
03:02And like I said, I think if he's, if he plays at the level that he's played at in Arizona,
03:07he instantly makes everybody else in the secondary better.
03:12He's just, he's a strong communicator.
03:14He's really sharp, fast mental processor.
03:16All those things are big holes that they had last year.
03:20All right.
03:21Now let's get to the Rashawn Gary breakdown.
03:24G-Bag had on Pete Doherty from the Green Bay Press-Gazette yesterday.
03:29And they asked him, well, number one, they, they asked, why is Green Bay doing this?
03:34And he talked about the finances and the money saying he wasn't as good of a player as the salary
03:39commanded.
03:40We still have not seen reports over the salary being redone yet.
03:44We do expect it to happen.
03:46You know, right now in that $18 million range, maybe it doesn't happen,
03:51but this is a Pete Doherty Packers insider on Gary as an edge.
03:56Yeah.
03:56You know, he was not, he wasn't that, for how big he is, he's like 270.
04:00He wasn't that good a run defender early in his career.
04:02Yeah.
04:03And he'd bite or he'd chase, you know, he'd chase stuff down the line
04:06and they could run boots around him and misdirection.
04:09He's gotten a lot better at that.
04:11And he is, he does set a good edge.
04:13He's a really good power rusher.
04:15So if you've got to keep the quarterback in the pocket and you need everybody to bull rush,
04:20you know, he'll get some push that way.
04:21You know, he'll be pretty good that way.
04:24He just, just like in college, he's just not, something's missing for finishing the pass rush.
04:30His pressure numbers are pretty decent, but his sack numbers are not.
04:33I think he went, oh, I got to look again.
04:36I think he went like the last nine or 10 games without a sack until,
04:40I think he might've had one in the playoff game.
04:42And that's what a lot of Packer fans were complaining about yesterday.
04:47They were like a complete disappearance from him.
04:51Micah goes down and poof, gone with the wind.
04:55When I, when I went and watched some of his highlights and you said it yesterday when the
04:58trade happened, this is a humongous individual.
05:01So I'm not expecting him to have the twist and the bend.
05:04And actually Pete talks about the Gary scouting report and how he was playing alongside Parsons.
05:10It was just play.
05:11I mean, you know, Parsons didn't get hurt until like the week 14, I think, or 15.
05:17It was pretty late.
05:18So they were playing together most of the year, you know, and he, he keeps saying,
05:24Gary keeps saying that, you know, offenses were doing things to take him away.
05:27And they did, you know, he saw his share of double teams and chips and all that stuff.
05:31But, um, he's just, you know, like the really good rushers who have that, that feel, that
05:36bend, that ability to get skinny, get low to the ground, whatever it takes.
05:41He, he doesn't really have that or the second moves, um, but he is a good power rusher.
05:45And he gets, he's a, he's a, he's a, he's a really streaky rusher.
05:49He got his sacks the whole time he was here.
05:52He would get his stack sacks and bunches, and then he'd go through these really bad droughts.
05:57So if history holds true, which, I mean, this kind of seems to be who he is at this
06:01point, uh, if history holds true, he'll, he'll be that way with, uh, the Cowboys too.
06:06Like, I mean, I think that the guy that I watched yesterday, I do think there's a little
06:13bit of just when Micah got there, it's a, it's a sexier player.
06:18It's, it's a little bit of like what happened here in Dallas with Micah and D law, like Micah
06:22is the sexy speed rusher who gets around the edge and finishes the play.
06:26And D law wasn't that.
06:28And it became a lot easier to become a little bitter about like, well, why did we paint
06:31D law that way when in reality, he was a good player.
06:34I think some of that exists with Rashawn Gary, just based on what I saw yesterday.
06:37Like I watched a lot of him from last year when everybody says he was so bad, he looks
06:42like a pretty good player to me.
06:44He looks like a clowny D law.
06:47Like he is a primary really strong run defender.
06:50That's why I'm glad he said early in his career.
06:52Cause when he started saying he wasn't a very good run defender, I was like, bull, that
06:55is not what I saw, but then he, he ended up saying early in his career, but he is, he's
06:59somebody who I think could win with some of the speed and then some of the, the turn in
07:05the corner more often than he does.
07:07It's almost like he just doesn't trust it, but he, he opts for a lot of the bull rushing
07:11and a lot of the power play.
07:12But we're talking about a guy who, when he was coming out of Michigan, he was six, four
07:15to 77.
07:17He ran four, five, eight.
07:19No.
07:19And his vertical jump was 38 inches.
07:22And he had a 10 foot broad.
07:24His three cone was seven to six.
07:26Like, I mean, he is 26 reps on the bench press.
07:28He is like a really, really strong athlete.
07:30He was number one on Feldman's freaks list years ago, and he's got the tools to be able
07:35to do it.
07:36And you're hoping somewhat Marcus Dixon's done throughout his career, which is maximize
07:42pass rushers.
07:42We've seen that, uh, working with BT Jordan again, who he had trained with for several
07:47years, uh, and then getting with Christian Parker.
07:49You hope that, all right, this is why you hired the staff is to maximize players like
07:53that.
07:53But even if he's just the same guy, he's been in green Bay, he makes your defense better.
07:58He's a good player.
07:59Were Seahawk fans excited about tank last year?
08:03No, I don't, I don't think they were complaining about it.
08:06But yeah, because people are the fantastic, like, you know, is he, is he like Anthony
08:09Spencer, not as a type of player, but the almost Anthony, but the almost Anthony, right?
08:14And, and look, there's, I was thinking of, I was trying to think of a guy who had these
08:18measurables and I thought of peppers, but peppers are freak too.
08:23Peppers was much more of an athletic freak than when I'm, when I'm looking at the limited
08:28highlights that I've seen of Gary basketball, peppers, also speed and quickness.
08:33And Gary's just kind of like plotting and I'm going to bulldoze my way back into the
08:38backfield.
08:39I'm not going to give you, and then people trying to say, Micah, you know, was given
08:43his pass rush tutorial yesterday on social media.
08:45He's like, this is what I look for in pass rushers.
08:47And you got to have a counter move to everything.
08:49And a lot of guys just have one move and people are like, oh, he's taking a shot right
08:52there at Rashawn Gary, not having, you know, option B or C.
08:56Gary, Gary's got old man strength at, at, at his mid twenties, uh, which is like, imagine
09:01it's gonna be scary when he's 50, really scary.
09:04Uh, but yeah, like this is, if you find a guy and I don't mind, I don't mind, I'm not,
09:08I'm not, I'm not annoyed.
09:10I shouldn't say I'm not annoyed.
09:11It is frustrating when you watch a guy who almost gets there, but you know, pressures
09:15do lead to interceptions.
09:17Yeah.
09:18Pressures.
09:18There's, there's a, there's a absolute call for guys who just get pressures.
09:23A lot of modern, like philosophy and thought is that they prefer pressure, but like there
09:29are definitely still people would say I'd rather get the sack, but a lot of people believe
09:32pressure leads to mistakes.
09:33Michael Lombardi is a big pressure leads to mistakes guys.
09:35Um, if you're looking for measurables, who he's closest to, so then it's wrong.
09:40I mean, it's out of the league.
09:42Uh, when you look at measurables, who is closest to in terms of his athletic testing and his
09:47height, weight, everything else, the guy that mock draftable says he most closely represents
09:51is Bradley Chubb.
09:53So that kind of a physical player, he's actually a little heavier and a little bit longer than
09:57Chubb is, but he got tired like tank at the end of the year.
09:59So it's perfect.
10:00Yeah, exactly.
10:01Well, you know what?
10:02He, he, he, he wasn't, he wasn't burned out this year or doubt he wasn't burned out this
10:05year, but it's both of these players you got yesterday.
10:09I think two things can be true.
10:10Cause I don't know how much you guys have seen it.
10:12Did you guys see a lot of bitterness on Twitter yesterday by the end of the day?
10:16Yes.
10:16But don't blow it up because we're going to address it all at eight o'clock on a lot
10:21of Cowboy fans.
10:22I think the question is, is it too early?
10:25I think it's a fair question.
10:27Is it too early to be ticked off over bust the budget?
10:30And we're going to address that at eight.
10:32Yeah.
10:32And I, I'm just saying that I know there were people who were upset yesterday.
10:36I'm just saying that I think that deck is in a vacuum.
10:39You look at the two players they added, I would have killed in the middle of last year
10:46to drop those two players on the defense, like to put them on the defense.
10:49And I think it would have made a significant difference.
10:51Quinn and Williams came in here and made a difference.
10:53And then those, neither one of those guys are Quinn and Williams, but when you've got
10:56Quinn and Williams and then you had two other guys who can do some different things for
10:59you and you're hoping to still explore some things on the linebacker market, which is
11:03very dry and they definitely should probably get some criticism for.
11:07And then they still got the two first round picks.
11:09It makes you feel like, okay, they're at least building towards something that you can see
11:13a little bit of a cohesive unit coming together.
11:15Final clip from Packers insider, Pete Doherty on the G bag nation on if Rashawn Gary is a
11:21leader.
11:22He's fine.
11:23You know, I think he wants to win and, um, and all that stuff.
11:26Uh, you know, it was funny.
11:28He, um, I thought he was a really good effort guy for most of his career, but there were a
11:33couple of times last year where he kind of got caught jogging, you know, like
11:37chasing the quarterback and Parsons would just go flying by him from the other side
11:41of the field.
11:42And it was like, what's Gary doing there?
11:43He's just, he's not, he's really not digging in.
11:46Uh, but up until this year, the second half of this year, I thought he was a really good
11:51effort player.
11:51So, um, you know, maybe he needs a, maybe a change of, uh, change of, uh, scenery.
11:56He'll put a little juice in him too.
11:58So there it is.
11:59Brian brought us and Packers insider on your two newest defenders, uh, a little green
12:05Bay note from RJ Ochoa.
12:08He said trades between the Cowboys and the Packers over the last kind of year, Dallas received
12:142026 first, 2027 first, Kenny Clark, Rashawn Gary, Green Bay receives Micah Parsons, 2027
12:26fourth.
12:27If that was the initial trade, I, I don't know that there's a ton of complaint, but I think
12:32that's a really, in general, I think Dallas wins out there.
12:36Yeah.
12:36So, I mean, it ultimately it's two separate trades.
12:39So obviously you can't just go this and that, but also when you think about it, they also
12:42flip some of that to Quinn and like they, they have, I think done pretty solid so far
12:47to maximize the return, you know, because it now becomes a 26, one and Quinn and added
12:54to it.
12:54So it's just like, we get rid of one of the ones and then add Quinn.
12:58Um, now who's left in rap report, just, uh, Schefter's updating Trey Hendrickson, uh, go
13:07to the get up Twitter, pay, pay and pull that for me and see if there's anything worth playing
13:11in that.
13:12Yeah.
13:12You're appreciated.
13:14I said, man, has day one been like this in the past five years?
13:19Cause now I'm kind of football depressed and I'm not going to get anything the rest of
13:22the week.
13:23In rap report, an unprecedented frenzy, 25 of the top 30 free agents have already agreed
13:30to deals with their own team or a new team.
13:3325 of NFL network.com's top 30 have agreed top remaining names, Hendrickson, Reek Woolen,
13:43who I like, Rasheed Walker, Romeo Dobbs, Kevin Byard, safety, Nashawn Wright.
13:50We know that name.
13:50Kalavion Chason, Elijah Vera Tucker, Chris Paul, Kyler Murray, Bradley Chubb, Taylor Decker,
13:58Braden Smith, Debo Samuel, Juwan Jennings, uh, linebackers, Caden Ellis, Leo Chanel, Goddard,
14:08Njoku, DJ Reader, Rashad White.
14:11A little surprised that it's been a quiet market to this point with all the linebackers that
14:17have gotten scooped up.
14:18I'm surprised Leo Chanel has not.
14:20There must be.
14:20I mean, he had, he had played really well the last couple of years.
14:23There's must be injury concerns there with him.
14:25Do we need to be previewing Patrick Queen or do you want to talk about how the Cowboys
14:30signings have lined up against the rest of the market?
14:33Why, why the Patrick Queen talk?
14:35Um, so I think the Patrick Queen talk is just, there is, there's buzz out of Pittsburgh that
14:40the Steelers may be willing to move on from Patrick Queen who had been really good for the
14:46Ravens, signed a big deal in Pittsburgh a couple of years ago.
14:49So it hasn't totally worked out.
14:51Um, last year was a rough year for Patrick Queen.
14:54He's still very young and he's a super athlete.
14:58The problem is that the book on him from a lot of teams was when he's playing next to
15:04Roquan Smith, Roquan Smith was able to kind of set him up into positions and to play free.
15:09And he was able to use his athleticism and just go.
15:12And when he was, when it was more on him, that there was some, some struggles there.
15:16Um, so that's, that's something that people definitely have chattered about with Queen.
15:22I know you're, are you looking at his PFF grade?
15:23Is that what you're doing?
15:24Yeah.
15:25God.
15:26Um, did you see it already?
15:28Yeah.
15:28He read it to you in a break.
15:31What is it?
15:33It's a 44, but that's a, it's 78.
15:37It's 78 out of 88 deep, uh, linebackers.
15:41I think Kenneth Murray was 88 out of 88.
15:42So that's improvement.
15:43That's improvement.
15:44Um, no, but when you see him, he's somebody who I think he trained here in the off season,
15:49uh, in the past.
15:51Um, I think given where the Cowboys are at in terms of the linebacker market dwindling
15:57options, that's a good upside player who I would not say necessarily that he's penciled
16:02in as your starter, but as a guy who would come in here, be rotational, be depth to add
16:06to overshown.
16:07And then whoever else you might draft, I don't think it's a bad, bad way to look, but that's,
16:12that's somebody that I think they are going to look into today.
16:14My Ravens guy, good blitzes for an interior linebacker.
16:18I know he went to Pittsburgh, but I just asked for the Raven report, uh, cause choppy's got
16:22the Pittsburgh guy, uh, good blitzes for an interior linebacker fast.
16:26When he diagnoses plays, he flies to the ball, takes the cheese in coverage, gets lost in
16:30the wash because he struggles to disengage from blocks.
16:33Needs a couple of beats in front of him to be a productive linebacker, given his weight
16:37built like a strong safety versus a linebacker.
16:41I think he meant to say, uh, blitzer actually, uh, he's worth a fifth at best in a trade.
16:48Yeah.
16:49So he's, and then my other guy said, talented, fast linebacker, but never the identity of the
16:54defense guy, not a consistent pros pro.
16:57He'd never grabbed the reins of the defense.
16:59He has moments you think he's going to be great, literally needs a vet next to him to
17:03tell him his assignment.
17:05So 2020 in Baltimore, again, just going off PFF grades, 29.7 in 2020.
17:11Damn.
17:11In 2021, it was 43.5.
17:13The Ravens acquire Roquan Smith in 2022.
17:17His PFF grade is 70.
17:19His PFF grade in 23 next to Roquan Smith, 73.
17:22First year in Pittsburgh, 58.
17:24And then last year, 44.
17:25So he's, he's somebody who, yeah, has, has throughout his career needed some of that.
17:31Um, overshone, I think would be the guy that would be directing that Adam Schefter on what's
17:37going on with the still unsigned Trey Hendrickson.
17:40He's been in contact with a number of teams right now.
17:43The issue I think is this.
17:45You see the Houston Texans go out and give Daniel Hunter a $40 million a year extension.
17:50You see yesterday, the Carolina Panthers shocked the NFL and give Jalen Phillips $30 million
17:56a year.
17:58Trey Hendrickson sees himself in the company of those kinds of players.
18:02And so you would think that there would be a corresponding contract in that vicinity.
18:07But if there's not a team out there that's willing to give you $40 or $30 million, sometimes
18:13it takes a player a little bit of time to understand how the market works like that.
18:18And to accept that just because Daniel Hunter might get $40, you might not get $40.
18:23Just because Jalen Phillips gets $30 doesn't mean you get $30.
18:27And so right now he's talking to a bunch of teams, but nobody has met his price just yet.
18:32And he's a very strong-minded, prideful person.
18:35He wants to get his price.
18:37And until he feels like he does, he's not willing to compromise on that.
18:40I cannot blame him for not wanting to accept a deal that's below Jalen Phillips.
18:45If teams are telling him in the 20s, I wouldn't have signed yet either.
18:50But I mean, that also tells me if he might, you can create money.
18:56You can make it work.
18:57And so to me, if you look at this, if he's really going to sign in the high 20s, or
19:03if
19:03he could get to a point where it's like, I guess I'm taking 28, I would say Dallas better
19:08be in on that.
19:09If they don't, if they're not, that's a mess.
19:12Even if you don't love him.
19:14You could not be in love with him.
19:16He's still a quality player.
19:17He's still going to produce.
19:19At some point, the numbers becomes too valuable.
