00:06If you could see through my eyes, you'd be wildly impressed.
00:14Hey, Robert. It's great to see you again.
00:15Great to see you again.
00:16Welcome back.
00:16Morning, sir. Captain Ty Nafee.
00:18I'm your Air Mission Commander for today's flight back to the National Training Center.
00:20And Chalk 1 with you will be your pilot, Mr. Rick Delbert.
00:23Nice to meet you, sir.
00:23These are the safety areas. You got the tail rotor in the back.
00:25Black Hawk. So cool.
00:27Home loading here.
00:28Nice jet sound, Rebecca.
00:30Do you want take two?
00:35This is my life. Do you understand?
00:37Whenever I'm on a roll, there's an airplane or something. It's amazing.
00:41All right, let's do this.
00:41Okay.
01:16Please level with me, sir. Do you think this is going to work?
01:20We're going to provide quite a challenge for you.
01:23As you know, the F-182 Abrams tank is the best tank in the world.
01:27It weighs as much as a 747.
01:30It's 72 tons.
01:32This is a car show. Trust me. It's all going to make sense.
01:50What does this put us right now?
01:52Like, Bobbill?
01:53Hollywood?
01:55Quick question. What is flowing through this tube?
01:58Uh, so my opener will just be very big. Are you ready?
02:02Hold on just a goddamn second. We're starting in the helicopter?
02:05People don't even know what's going on yet.
02:07What is this, an Oliver Stone movie?
02:08I mean, I get it. Black Hawks, soldiers, high drama.
02:12It's super awesome, and we'll get back to it.
02:14But we need to kick this thing off with a proper intro.
02:17You know how they do it nowadays?
02:21Never don't have the slate in the show.
02:22You know it.
02:23You know you're in the show.
02:25Sorry.
02:27A little jumpy.
02:28Roberto.
02:31Hi.
02:32You may know me as an occasional actor who makes faces for cash and chicken.
02:37But really what I am is a red-blooded American boy who grew up in New York
02:41watching the French Connection and Bullet,
02:45men in cars representing their toxic machismo.
02:50And man, I want it in.
02:54Click 2, 42 years later, I had actually amassed a collection,
02:59which is what I thought you're supposed to do when you've become successful.
03:02You know, you're supposed to collect things.
03:04You're supposed to have artifacts of your success.
03:08You're supposed to be able to drive these symbols of how you've succeeded in America.
03:13But a lot has happened over the last 40 years.
03:16A big problem.
03:17Wave and drought events, not what should be.
03:19My priorities are in a completely different place now.
03:23And yet, I still love these cars.
03:25I feel like they represent something uniquely beautiful about the past.
03:30So, I want to bring them into the present.
03:35Maybe even the future.
03:37Pretty quickly, I realized I was going to need some help.
03:40Someone with a lot of knowledge and connections in the car world.
03:43The kind of guy who always knows a guy who knows a guy.
03:46And it just so happens, I knew a guy like that.
03:48The tactile plate and the window sticker.
03:50From what I see, it looks definitely worth it.
03:53My name is Chris Mazzilli.
03:54I'm the owner and founder of Dream Car Restorations in New York.
03:57We specialize in restoring classic cars, muscle cars.
04:00But really, our specialty is Corvettes.
04:02I've known Robert probably close to 20 years.
04:04I met his dad first.
04:05He's a very good friend, a mentor.
04:08He taught me a lot about life.
04:09And over the years, I got to know Robert pretty well.
04:11So, Robert reached out to me about doing these eco-friendly type restorations in some of his cars.
04:16I knew I could help him out, you know, whether it was us doing some of the work at our
04:19shop or connecting with the right people.
04:22So, in my mind, I kind of pictured he's going to start small, maybe like a car is like a
04:25little run down or beat up.
04:27And then he rolls this thing in.
04:31So, perhaps you're wondering why I have gathered you here in my layout.
04:42So, he shows me this 1972 K-10 pickup.
04:47And this thing is, like, perfect.
04:49It's beautiful.
04:50And I'm like, what do you want us to do to this?
04:53We called it the Thanos Thumper because it's big and it's loud and it's purple.
04:58It looks like it could eat the world and it definitely eats a lot of gas.
05:02And so, when I got this idea to eco-mod some of my car collection, it wasn't too long before
05:08I was looking at this beast of a truck, thinking, what if I went electric with that?
05:13Is that even possible?
05:16The specially equipped sale-pice Chevy Pickle.
05:18K-10 and the C-10, which is just the two-wheel drive variant.
05:22Almost as tough as a tank.
05:24Well, almost.
05:25These are among the most modded vehicles in the world.
05:28So, could this thing be emissions-free and yet remain completely and totally badass?
05:35Yeah.
05:36Who's taking this all in?
05:37It's a lot to take in right now.
05:38It's a lot.
05:39So, the LS comes out.
05:40LS out.
05:41And put a Tesla motor in it.
05:43My name is Rich Benoit.
05:43And when you want to take your 500-horsepower Corvette motor out of your Chevy K10 and put Tesla motors
05:49in, I guess I'm your guy.
05:52So, looking at this K10, it was built to a super high-quality level.
05:55And I'm supposed to take this thing apart and make it better?
05:58It's kind of freaked me out.
05:59When I told Mizzilli I wanted to go all-electric with my K10, he said, I know the exact right
06:04guy for this.
06:05Rich Benoit.
06:07Internet famous for his YouTube channel, Rich Rebuilds.
06:11I checked it out and right away I saw Mizzilli was right.
06:14This is the man for the job.
06:15Because Rich seems to know almost everything about electric drivetrains.
06:19And because he also seems completely out of his mind.
06:23I knew Rich would be a good fit for this build.
06:25His company has a garage in New Hampshire where they'll do all the work.
06:28Dave Weber is my partner at Dream Cars.
06:30Dave is a master mechanic.
06:31But like I said, we haven't done a lot of EV swaps, so we're going to learn a lot from
06:35Rich on this one.
06:36And size-wise, what are we looking at for the electric motor?
06:39Half the size, maybe the third the side of this.
06:41Wow.
06:41Yeah.
06:42How big are the batteries?
06:43Let's just say 150 to 200 miles of range.
06:46You need about an 85-kilowatt-hour battery pack.
06:51Is that a lot of kilowatt-hours?
06:54Or is that a normal amount of kilowatt-hours?
06:56What do you think, Dave?
06:57Yeah.
06:58I wasn't listening.
07:01Honestly.
07:01Dude, you really aren't.
07:03You're in a rainbow tie-dye world of your arms.
07:06I don't know a lot about building electric cars, but I know that putting the batteries in the right place
07:11is very important.
07:12See, I would better off mounting the motor right-
07:15You guys ever been photobombed while you're trying to have a discussion, huh?
07:19I can tell these guys feel like it's a little crazy for me to be messing with my K10.
07:24It's already been immaculately restored.
07:27Now I'm going to re-restore it.
07:28But here's the thing.
07:30That truck is insanely loud, insanely powerful, pumps out insane amounts of exhaust.
07:38It's like the ultimate monument to the internal combustion engine.
07:41Now I want to tear it down and make it into another kind of monument, quieter, zero emissions, but just
07:50as powerful.
07:50That's the challenge for Rich and his team.
07:53Turn it into the strong, silent type.
07:57Just like me.
08:00That was good.
08:01That was good.
08:13Oh my God.
08:14This thing is awesome.
08:17It feels like I'm riding a dragon, almost.
08:20It feels like I'm on the inside of the dragon.
08:22I don't really have much control over what's going on.
08:24But there's so many sounds and different experiences and smells.
08:27And like, I'm sitting so high up.
08:30It's so fast.
08:31It's just, it's incredible.
08:36And I can assure you, no one's ever converted a truck like this and gone to electric.
08:40Never did I think in a million years that I'd be driving Robert Downey Jr.'s truck, him handing me the
08:48keys and saying,
08:49I want you to convert this to electric.
08:51Didn't see that one coming this lifetime.
09:03Holy shit.
09:13Watch the door.
09:15A couple of things.
09:16You know that none of my square bodies actually run.
09:18Yeah.
09:19So you know it's not mine.
09:21Check this out.
09:23Yeah.
09:24Fully built engine.
09:25Oh no.
09:25It's supercharged.
09:27Everything's color matched.
09:28It's clean.
09:29It's a really nice setup.
09:31We're going to be removing this.
09:34It will be converted to electric.
09:36Oh.
09:37Uh-huh.
09:38Well, I guess that's why it's here.
09:40Yes.
09:40Yep.
09:41This is going to be a different thing.
09:42At least there's plenty of room in here.
09:44There's tons of room.
09:45Lots of room for activities, as they say.
09:47Absolutely.
09:47This thing was already so well done.
09:50To go in and do anything to this just feels wrong.
09:52But I also just like those old big trucks.
09:55So to see one of those rolling around as EV would be really cool.
09:59Let me give you a basic rundown of the game plan.
10:01Here's our K10 pickup truck.
10:03Four-wheel drive.
10:04Completely tricked out.
10:05Currently, it has a big supercharged engine and an automatic transmission.
10:09Obviously, that's coming out.
10:10The exhaust system and the fuel tank are also going away because electric vehicle doesn't need gasoline or pump out
10:15exhaust.
10:16Now, our basic plan for replacing the powertrain is an electric motor from Tesla that will send power to all
10:21four wheels.
10:22Now, batteries are powering the motor, but those batteries are heavy and take up lots of space.
10:26To fit them in the truck, they'll be split between two boxes.
10:29Where to put the batteries is typically the trickiest part of converting a gas car to an electric car.
10:40I think I just got a four-pan screw under me.
10:43Ow.
10:44This truck is not going easy, is it?
10:46No.
10:46That's the deal with any of these custom jobs.
10:49This stuff is tucked in very neatly and cleanly.
10:51It knows what we're doing.
10:52There's no factory service manual telling me what the best procedure is.
10:56We're just going off of gut instinct here.
11:00There it is.
11:02Yep.
11:04Okay.
11:13Glasses change.
11:16Glasses off.
11:19Now I can't get out of it.
11:21Where's pause?
11:23Oh.
11:25I'm just going to ask you some questions.
11:27Please.
11:28Ask me anything.
11:32All right.
11:33So you told me that this idea to eco-mod your classic cars grew out of the Footprint Coalition.
11:38So how did the Footprint Coalition start?
11:44Like damn near everything in my life, it kind of started on a resentment.
11:49Tell you why.
11:50How did you first get involved in, like, caring about things?
11:54Because you're from Hollywood.
11:55You're not supposed to care about anything but yourself.
11:56Here's the story of how I started the Footprint Coalition.
11:59I was wrapping up my Marvel contract.
12:02Was it Iron Man that set you thinking about climate change, about the morality of technology?
12:07And so I kind of made all the similes between my journey in the Marvel Universe, along with what's really
12:13happened with AI and robotics over the last 10, 15 years.
12:16And then I thought when I was doing this, I honestly should make some sort of commitment to the environment.
12:22The Malibu fires, I had my hoses out trying to help my neighbor not lose his house.
12:27You kind of go, this is not the rhythm that was going on in California in the 80s or the
12:3290s.
12:33And so I got together with a bunch of super geniuses, and they said, you know, with AI and robotics,
12:38we probably could clean up the planet in two years.
12:42I said, well, let's do it.
12:43Let's start a coalition and let's get it done.
12:47And understandably, everybody started backpedaling.
12:49Well, it might be more like 10, you know what?
12:52I mean, look, really what we're doing right now, and they went into their story.
12:57And I felt a little pissed off, not at them, just at the inefficiency of the human experience.
13:13And so I thought, well, I'm just going to say that I'm going to do something about this.
13:17I said, I'm starting a coalition.
13:19And I was like, what is a coalition?
13:21We wanted to start it with a nonprofit and science work.
13:24The parts that came later were venture capital, which has been really awesome and productive, and the media part.
13:30Yes!
13:30When I look back at it three years ago, soon after I said, I'm going to start the footprint coalition,
13:35about a week later, I was like, dude, what have you done?
13:38But it's going strong.
13:39As a matter of fact, it was the whole impetus for this show in that there's more than one way
13:44to address the problem.
13:46We shouldn't have to give up too much.
13:47So classic cars are a great place to start.
13:53You got some work done, didn't you?
13:55Oh, yeah, you did.
13:56Look at this.
13:57Yeah, it just clears too.
13:59So the build's coming along pretty well.
14:01Brian made brackets for the electric power steering pump and the AC compressor.
14:05Chad mounted the coolers for the batteries and the other components that get hot.
14:08And in order to mock up the driveline to understand how that will all fit, we need to know where
14:12the front battery box is going to be.
14:19Ah, just too short.
14:21As good as my CAD is on the computer, there are things that it doesn't factor in, and it doesn't
14:27necessarily capture what it really looks like in the car.
14:30So we are now going to switch to the other CAD, which is cardboard-aid design.
14:35He's really doing it.
14:37Overall, it's going to be a lot easier than trying to figure it out with full-size, full-weight components.
14:42This is a big-ass box, Brian.
14:44It does have to fit eight modules in it.
14:47And that should do it.
14:50Oh.
14:52Oh, yeah.
14:53It looks like this is almost the ideal height right here.
14:55Now we're installing 16 battery modules into the truck.
14:58That's 85 kilowatt hours of energy storage.
15:01Now these 16 modules will be split between a front and a rear battery box.
15:05The rear battery box will be disguised as the kind of toolbox that you see in a lot of pickup
15:09trucks.
15:10And the front battery box will go right over the motor in the engine compartment.
15:13They have a way of just fitting under the hood.
15:15Sitting a little high in this corner.
15:17On that corner, yeah, so I'll have to push it back up.
15:19You want me to get something to block it back up?
15:21Rich is like, let me get in.
15:23This is about where I want it.
15:26Every single time I jump into one of these conversions, there's always a little bit of pressure.
15:31You'd always want to make, like, a great product for the customer and make sure everything's looking really good.
15:36That's better.
15:37It's like five, ten times that with this.
15:40This engine compartment has no place to hide anything.
15:42Yeah, it's out in the open, right.
15:44And the DC to DC doesn't look pleasing.
15:47No, it's not a very attractive part at all.
15:48Yeah, it's not an attractive part.
15:54An electric vehicle, just like a gas-powered vehicle, it's got a radio, headlights, windshield wiper, backup camera, and all
16:00sorts of other goodies that run on, of course, electricity.
16:04But that can't suck on the 400 volts coming from the big battery that powers the drive units.
16:10That's where the DC to DC converter comes in.
16:13And it steps the voltage down from 400 to the 12-volt standard that powers all your accessories.
16:20So, I was thinking about hiding it underneath the battery tray.
16:22You're going to have, like, a bracket that does this, almost?
16:24Yeah.
16:24Like, kind of one there and one there.
16:26Yeah, some angle iron brackets and some stiffening plates, which should be fine.
16:31How should I cut this?
16:32How do you feel about using the plasma cutter?
16:34I feel damn good.
16:35Yeah?
16:35I've been waiting my whole life for this shit.
16:37I'll show you how to set that up.
16:38Please make me use the plasma cutter.
16:40Please make me use it.
16:43There's nothing like getting the chance to play with someone else's tools.
16:46Actually, that sounds weird.
16:49Especially when it's Chad's tool.
16:51That sounds worse.
16:52There's nothing like having the right tool for the job.
17:00Oh, yeah.
17:02Behold.
17:03The plasma cutter, which uses a jet of hot plasma to cut electrically conductive materials.
17:09It was developed in the 1950s, largely due to the support of the armed forces and a newly formed agency
17:16called NASA.
17:17It's amazing how many things we use on a daily basis that grew out of the work of military engineers.
17:25And it's that history of innovation that found me driving deep into the Mojave to visit Fort Irwin,
17:32a 1,000 square mile base in the middle of the desert where the Army conducts training exercises.
17:39I wanted to see and hear firsthand how the Army is anticipating the future in this era of changing energy
17:46technology
17:46and extreme weather events around the world.
17:50Hey, Robert.
17:51You must be General Taylor.
17:52Yeah, nice to meet you.
17:53Wow, what a pleasure.
17:54Welcome to Fort Irwin.
17:56Brigadier General Kurt Taylor is Fort Irwin's commanding general.
18:00Move out.
18:00All right, sir.
18:02All right, so DJ's son.
18:04He's a huge Iron Man fan.
18:06Aw.
18:06I told him I was going to be able to drive Tony Stark, and he lost it.
18:10Really?
18:10He's like, really?
18:12God bless his heart.
18:14All right, I'm going to show you how the Army is tackling this problem with energy efficiency.
18:18Great.
18:18We've got a lot of great options with new vehicles coming online and new ways to provide power on the
18:23battlefield.
18:23The Army is planning for the future and exploring all sorts of new energy and resource-efficient technology.
18:29At Fort Irwin, they've made great progress with water treatment and conservation.
18:34Ninety-five percent of our water is recycled.
18:36They even have a self-sustaining solar-powered hospital.
18:39This is our lead platinum hospital.
18:42It's the highest possible rating for energy efficiency.
18:45Not only can we power the hospital, but we're going to get to the point pretty soon where we can
18:49power big chunks of the community as well.
18:51That is so badass.
18:53Today, I'm here to see their new all-electric tactical utility vehicle.
18:58And you might even get a chance to drive.
19:00Yes.
19:03I'll just do a rolling jump right here.
19:10What's next, General?
19:12All right.
19:13I got Colonel Chris Vitale here from the Army's Climate Change Division.
19:17And he's going to talk to us about what we're doing for the future.
19:20Oh, I love it.
19:21Robert, so I'm the director for the Army Climate Change Office.
19:24When has there been a climate change initiative or even branch?
19:28Within the last year and a half to two years, the office has been in existence.
19:34What we're responsible for is the coordination and oversight for the Army's climate change strategy.
19:38A lot of people probably don't know that the Army has a climate change strategy.
19:42Sure.
19:43Today, no nation can find lasting security without addressing the climate crisis.
19:49The impacts of climate change can be an issue for national security or operational security.
19:55So the Army Climate Change Strategy is designed to produce effects that build resilience for the Army as a whole.
20:02The ability to provide self-generation of power, storage, to be able to run a base in the face of,
20:09say, a disruption to the microgrid from a weather event or potential effects from adversaries.
20:15And so what we're going to show you today is a piece of that climate strategy.
20:19Great.
20:19And that's the vehicle electrification pathway.
20:21This is the direction we're going.
20:23It's obviously a tactical advantage to not have to rely on the old-school chain of supply issues.
20:29Exactly right.
20:30If you don't have fuel to move, we don't have a supply chain vulnerability problem.
20:34The benefits are pretty profound.
20:36Excellent.
20:38And this is Mr. Steve Dumont, the president of GM Defense.
20:41Pleasure.
20:43This is the Army's newest vehicle.
20:45It's the infantry squad vehicle.
20:47It's designed for the Airborne Brigade Combat Teams.
20:50The mission of GM Defense is to bring commercial technology into the defense and government marketplace to harness a big
20:59investment that the commercial marketplace is making in cutting-edge technology and doing it in a way that benefits a
21:05warfighter.
21:08It's airborne deployable.
21:10We parachuted it out of a C-130 and a C-17.
21:14This provides tactical mobility.
21:17This is internal combustion engine powered.
21:19Shortly after the Army bought this vehicle, we developed this.
21:22Look at this!
21:23It's the electric infantry squad vehicle.
21:26It's got an electric motor in it.
21:27It's got a battery pack in the back.
21:29This is so cool.
21:31Performance is incredible.
21:32So the infantry squad vehicle, or ISV, started its life as a Chevy Colorado.
21:39It's got a commercial DNA.
21:42We are in the midst of a $35 billion investment in a more electric, autonomous, and connected future.
21:48We're going to take a lot of those vehicles now that are internal combustion engine powered and turn them into
21:53electric vehicles.
21:54The Army is on a journey.
21:56It's a journey to understand how to smartly use this new technology.
22:00First and foremost, it has to give them competitive advantage on the battlefield.
22:03The tactical benefit of electric vehicles are, first, it's acoustically near silent.
22:11It doesn't have an engine that makes noise like a traditional vehicle does.
22:16Furthermore, as a former attack pilot, everything that I targeted, I used the thermal signature to target.
22:23That goes away with an electric vehicle.
22:25You don't have a hot engine.
22:26You don't have a hot hood from the radiated energy.
22:29You don't have a hot exhaust system.
22:31And, oh, by the way, they deliver more power than ice-powered vehicles.
22:35It's an incredibly important part of the future arsenal that the United States Army has.
22:41I will exercise some restraint.
22:45Nice.
22:51All right, so even though you can't hear anything, you're in a vehicle that's running now.
22:56Wow.
22:57This is providing power.
22:58If you have mission systems, radios, surveillance systems, you have all the power you need.
23:03All right, so just drive it like you own it.
23:06Yeah.
23:08Three, two, one.
23:14All right, so what you'll see right away is that the performance of an electric vehicle,
23:19if you kind of step on it, you'll see that instantaneous torque.
23:22These are not golf carts.
23:24This is a very powerful vehicle.
23:26It will cover all terrain that our soldiers need it to cover.
23:30Oh, yeah.
23:31All right, I got a good straightaway.
23:33Fantastic.
23:35You mind if I crank it?
23:36Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
23:37All right.
23:38All right.
23:41You can do a donut if you want.
23:43I would like to.
23:55So you are a steely-eyed infantry squad vehicle driver now.
24:00That was fun.
24:03Driving that ISV, I couldn't help but think about how the Jeep and the Humvee are military vehicles
24:09that became popular consumer cars, and now that type of innovation is happening in reverse.
24:14A vehicle created for the military from the bones of a Chevy production model.
24:20I smell innovation.
24:21Yeah.
24:22And this electric version of the ISV was born of the same question that I'm asking with my K10.
24:27Can you electrify a super-powered vehicle without sacrificing performance?
24:32I have to say I'm really encouraged because clearly the Army believes the answer to that
24:37question is absolutely.
24:39And that's really saying something when you think of what the Army asks of its vehicles.
24:47Back to business.
24:48Yeah.
24:50So we started going back to HQ?
24:51Yeah.
24:52Roger that.
24:52That's what they're telling me.
24:53I was blown away by what I saw and experienced at Fort Irwin.
24:57And on the drive back to HQ, the General and I started hatching a plan for me to make another
25:02visit, maybe by helicopter.
25:04We'll have to see about that.
25:07Carson, it's Tony here with your pops.
25:12Sorry we missed you today, but we'll catch up next time I'm on the base.
25:17All right, keep the faith.
25:19Thank you so much.
25:20That is awesome.
25:21That is awesome.
25:30Okay.
25:31Let's see how much space this takes up.
25:37Whoa.
25:40Holy cow.
25:41It's going to fit like a glove, isn't it?
25:44Ooh.
25:45Ooh.
25:46Ooh.
25:46You are right where the original motor mounts are.
25:49The original mounts were right here.
25:51Go figure.
25:53Let me get back here and take a look.
25:56Let me.
25:58Dude, that angle sucks.
25:59The center of this transmission tunnel is where that is on the transfer case.
26:03Oh, fuck.
26:04So it's now at an angle.
26:06Like a hard angle.
26:07And it's going to hit that back of that drive unit.
26:09So it looks like in this truck with its frame, the likely spot for the motor is here, except
26:15the drive shaft to the transfer case, the thing that distributes mechanical power from the
26:19motor to both the axes and the 4x4, the drive shaft isn't going to clear the fat end of
26:23the motor on its way to the transfer case.
26:25Now, the guys can try to slide it around and make it work, but it's pretty crowded down there, and
26:30it's also a very skinny frame to begin with.
26:32Every time we try to put something in here, it gets worse.
26:36This is the problem doing stuff that's never been done before.
26:40With this build, we thought there was going to be a lot of clearance around everything, because it's just a
26:45huge truck.
26:45And then, it turns out, we don't have any room.
26:49Nothing fits, because it's a narrow frame.
26:54Just for the hell of it, spin it.
26:58Change all the angles.
27:00All right.
27:12Oh, my God.
27:14Did that just make everything easier?
27:16Yeah.
27:17We have clearance for the diff now, for the front diff.
27:20The driveline angle is better and shorter, because, see, because the frame gets wider right there.
27:29You're right. That's almost center.
27:31It now sits further over.
27:32So, when you turn the motor around, they're right.
27:34It does fit.
27:35But now, since it's essentially in there backwards, in order to make the truck go forwards, the motor will be
27:40going in reverse.
27:42This is something I didn't even think about.
27:43Like, honestly, I'd never thought about reverse mounting one of these drive units.
27:47Ever.
27:48Running the motor backwards, it fixes our dry shaft angle, our dry shaft length, the fitment of the drive unit.
27:53It seems like everything's getting fixed by flipping this thing around.
27:57So, look at this.
27:59Show me out.
28:00Watch it.
28:01Oh, wow.
28:02So, there's your shaft, right?
28:03Now, if I want to move this forward so it actually fits in the adapter hole, another good driveline angle.
28:08Oh, that's awesome.
28:09Well, I've been around quite a few of these Tesla drive units, but it never crossed my mind to run
28:14one backwards.
28:15Most of the applications that we put them in, they're just the same orientation that they were in the original
28:20car.
28:20But this is, like, some next level trickery these guys are working on and I haven't come across yet.
28:25I believe this is going to fit.
28:27I think so, too, man.
28:28It looks good.
28:29Six years ago, I was in Zagreb.
28:35Really?
28:36Opatia, Dubrovnik, but Opatia on the coast.
28:41You still remember the names of the city?
28:43Yeah.
28:44My name is Mate Rimac.
28:46I'm the founder and CEO of Rimac Automobili.
28:48Kirsten Korosek connected me to Mate because she knew what I was up to with my truck and she said,
28:54there's a guy who started out EVing old cars as a teenager and now, at the age of 35, has
29:00built an empire.
29:02Lucky for me, Mate brought his hypercar with him, the Rimac's Nevera,
29:06a $2.5 million EV that also happens to be the fastest accelerating production car in the world.
29:14Wait, wait.
29:15First, show me how the door closes so I don't look like a schmuck when I see it.
29:18Oh, okay.
29:19And let me also check that the seat's in the right position before we take on.
29:24I have to push a button on the screen.
29:27It's on the screen.
29:28You want it closer?
29:29Just about an inch and a half closer.
29:32Okay, let's do that.
29:33And when I start, you'll start it.
29:36It started.
29:36It's now an end.
29:37You just turn it once and you're in the.
29:39Talent's ready.
29:40Action.
29:40Ain't she sweet?
29:42They're walking down.
29:43What a smoke show of an automobile.
29:46What do you call this color, brother?
29:49It's Nevera Blue.
29:50Nevera means a sudden and manageable adriatic storm.
29:57Mediterranean.
29:59Mediterranean.
30:00It's survivable.
30:01Yeah.
30:02Great.
30:03If you get out of the way.
30:07Brake.
30:10Drive.
30:11Yes.
30:12You're in drive.
30:12Oh my God, this is fucking gorgeous.
30:15Now you have 2,000 horsepower under your feet.
30:22It works.
30:25Oh my dear Lord.
30:29The thing is, when you go in the corner, every wheel gets its own power, completely independently.
30:36So it distributes the power exactly where it can go.
30:39Okay.
30:40100 times per second.
30:41And this is in cruise mode.
30:42You don't want to try track mode in this weather.
30:45I always wanted to race, and as soon as I turned 18, I bought a 1984 BMW E30.
30:54Because that was the easiest way to start racing.
30:56You just have a rear wheel drive car, you weld the differential, have a bunch of old tires,
31:01and you go drifting, like sliding around.
31:04Actually, I just did two races before my combustion engine blew up.
31:08So I decided to realize this other idea that was flying in my head, to make an electric car.
31:14So I bought like a forklift electric motor, some batteries, put it in the car,
31:20and at the beginning the car was not that great.
31:23But after every race, I came back to the garage, where I completely changed it every time.
31:28I replaced stuff which was off the shelf with things I built myself, and the car got faster and faster.
31:34And then in 2011, I broke five FIA in Guinness World Records for the fastest accelerating car with that BMW.
31:41But I had this idea of building a car from scratch.
31:45But cars have to be compelling.
31:47They are not just appliances.
31:49And I was asking myself, why is nobody using these advantages of the electric motor
31:53to make cars that are exciting, fun, beautiful?
31:57And that's what I wanted to do.
32:02I like that this is something that feels like I could get used to it.
32:06Forget the fact that this is a $2 million car.
32:08Yeah.
32:10This could be a daily driver.
32:11If I was insane.
32:13Yeah.
32:18The nice thing about this, too, the ergonomics are not so foreign that it's an alien experience.
32:27If I'm going to be going 200 miles an hour, I want it to feel like a couple cars I've
32:33been in before.
32:34Yes.
32:34And yet specific to itself.
32:36Actually, I will just shortly give it to you on track.
32:39So try now.
32:41Jesus criminy.
32:42Yeah, it's a big difference.
32:44Oh, my dearest Lord.
32:46Put it back.
32:47Have you ever had a dream where you're in a spaceship
32:51and you're wondering where the buttons are and it doesn't start
32:54and then all of a sudden it starts moving at the speed of light?
32:59No.
33:02Oh, driving that car, I wanted to be very mindful of the accelerator.
33:07This thing could probably take off.
33:11The Navetta is, of course, super expensive.
33:13It's a $2.5 million car and so on.
33:15It's not going to, you know, change the world.
33:17But it is showing what's possible.
33:19It's showing that the future of electric cars or cars in general doesn't have to be boring or dull.
33:25It can be super exciting even for, you know, petrol heads.
33:28Super exciting for petrol heads.
33:31Yeah, I got to get that on a t-shirt.
33:33Mate was really speaking my language and inspiring me
33:37because the whole idea of showing what's possible, that's what I want to do as well.
33:42Obviously not on the scale of this $2.5 million supercar,
33:45but just at the level of looking at my old cars
33:48and reimagining what can be done with them
33:50and hopefully inspiring others to do the same.
33:54All right, we're getting into the final stretch.
33:56Our reverse drive unit's going in.
33:58The drive shafts we had made just arrived and everything's coming together.
34:02Yay, it locked in.
34:03Will it fit?
34:04Will it fit?
34:05Yay!
34:05Both drive shafts are in.
34:07So right now if I spin this...
34:10Oh yeah.
34:11So now we have working four-wheel drive.
34:13It's selectable from two-wheel to four-wheel high or four-wheel low.
34:17It should be a fun mud truck.
34:18Yeah.
34:19That's the Florida man talking in me.
34:21Ha ha ha ha ha!
34:26I currently am getting our battery boxes assembled.
34:30These batteries, when they're all wired up in series,
34:33they're up at around 400 volt DC.
34:35Pretty scary stuff.
34:36These box assemblies keep everything secure,
34:40keep people out of them,
34:41and also keep water from getting in.
34:43As far as the EV conversion goes,
34:45it's electrical from here on out.
34:47I'm updating the truck's existing fuse boxes
34:49and assembling the wiring harnesses
34:50so we can get these battery boxes in here.
34:52Anytime you're dealing with EVs,
34:53you have high current draw,
34:55you're going to get electromagnetic interference
34:57and data wires do not like being next to electric fields.
35:00This is my thing.
35:01I love doing wiring.
35:04So it's the obvious place for the rear battery box
35:06is in the bed.
35:07We're going to go a little stealth,
35:09install it as if it was a toolbox.
35:11The diamond plate definitely makes it.
35:13In pretty much any work truck,
35:14there's that diamond plate toolbox.
35:17We definitely want to kind of mimic
35:18that same design here.
35:22Down.
35:25Perfect.
35:27This is coming together.
35:28Finally.
35:29Yeah.
35:31Each of these 16 battery modules
35:33can store about 5 kilowatt hours of electricity.
35:36That's about 10 miles of range.
35:38So in total,
35:3885 kilowatt hours of battery
35:40is approximately 150 miles of range.
35:43But of course,
35:44your mileage may vary.
35:45Literally.
35:48There we go.
35:49There's a lot of juice there.
35:50There's a lot of juice there.
35:53Now Robert wanted to change the truck
35:55to a lighter color,
35:56so we decided to do a vinyl wrap.
35:58Now it goes on quick,
35:59and it's reversible,
36:00which is nice.
36:01It's kind of sad to lose the purple,
36:02but this is definitely going to look cool.
36:04And it's what Robert asked for.
36:05He specifically chose this color.
36:08Lighter colors on cars
36:10reflect about 60% of sunlight,
36:12which translates into the cabin
36:14staying 5 to 6 degrees cooler
36:16than a car painted a darker color.
36:19Using the AC draws down battery power,
36:21reduces range.
36:22One study estimated that using the AC
36:25on full blast will reduce an EV's range by 17%.
36:29That's less miles you can travel on a charge,
36:32more electricity you're paying for,
36:34and just more power being pulled off the grid.
36:37That's why I decided to turn the purple people eater
36:42into the great ghost.
36:49Wheels are tarts.
36:51Sweet.
36:51Are we going to do this?
36:52We're going to do this.
36:53Today is a big day,
36:54because I think today is hopefully the day
36:56that we'll actually get the wheels to spin.
36:58I'm just doing this just in case.
36:59So I'm generally a pretty happy-go-lucky guy,
37:02but we went out on a limb for this build,
37:04so failure's not an option for this one.
37:06Brakes work.
37:08Drive.
37:11Get out of here.
37:12Is that it?
37:13It's turning.
37:14How about that?
37:15No way.
37:16And guess what?
37:17It's turning the right way.
37:19What's that noise, though?
37:20I don't know.
37:22You know what?
37:22I think that's the drive shaft.
37:24That thing's really annoying.
37:25Take a look at that.
37:26Now, the amount of effort that went
37:28into building this truck for Robert
37:29was absolutely insane.
37:31The guys pretty much worked around the clock,
37:33which is amazing.
37:34Yes!
37:35We have one or two bugs to work out,
37:36but otherwise, this thing is perfect.
37:38I can't wait to see Robert's reaction
37:39when we give it to him.
37:40I think he's going to love it.
37:51Chad, where are we, dude?
37:53If nowhere was a place, this is it.
37:56Once the truck was finished,
37:58instead of throwing a party for me
37:59at his house in Malibu,
38:00Robert did something a little odd.
38:02He gave me a date, time, and coordinates.
38:05It's almost like he doesn't want me
38:07to know where he lives.
38:08What the hell?
38:12It's a roadblock?
38:13We in trouble?
38:14Your record's clean, right?
38:15These guys look serious.
38:17This is all we need right now.
38:18Good morning.
38:19Good morning.
38:21We have coordinates here
38:22to meet Mr. Robert Dinah Jr.
38:26Follow me.
38:27Okay.
38:28We have one other guy.
38:29Can you ride with you?
38:31Is Chris going in combat?
38:32Where's he going?
38:34Chris should be wearing a helmet anyways.
38:36This is true.
38:36I'm going to go out on a limb.
38:38I'm going to say this is
38:39some kind of military base.
38:41I think he's just going
38:43by the vehicles I'm seeing so far.
38:45I hope they have EV charging here.
38:46Yeah, seriously.
38:51Dude, what the heck?
38:56Where are we?
38:57Hey, look.
38:59What is that?
39:01Flying saucer.
39:04You don't think Robert's on that, do you?
39:06Why would he be?
39:07Of course I'm on it.
39:09Didn't you see the beginning of the show?
39:10Okay, there should be
39:11a civilian vehicle called a K-10.
39:13I told you it would all make sense.
39:15I'm making good on that promise.
39:17So I'm headed back to Fort Erwin
39:19to get my first look
39:20at my now electrified K-10 pickup.
39:22I told those guys
39:24I wanted them to convert it to an EV
39:26and still retain all of its power.
39:28And to prove I meant business,
39:30I asked the general
39:31if he would help me put it to the test
39:33to see if it's more than just tough,
39:35if it's Army tough.
39:37We're going to provide
39:38quite a challenge for you.
39:41Incoming!
39:43What?
39:45Robert does like to make an entrance, so...
39:47I don't think that's him.
39:48There's no way.
39:52I feel underdressed.
39:54Not Chris.
39:55He has a helmet.
39:56He's fine.
39:57Exactly.
39:57I'm ready to go.
39:58He's one of them.
40:04I'm so confused right now.
40:08It was a hell of an entrance.
40:10General Taylor, Rich and the boys.
40:12Hey, Rich.
40:12Good to meet you.
40:13Good to meet you.
40:13Nice to meet you.
40:14It's been a minute.
40:15Great to see you.
40:16The general is going to do what he can
40:19to give us a challenge.
40:22Oh.
40:23We're being challenged today.
40:23Yep.
40:24Yes.
40:24And his base, his rules,
40:26so we're going to have to see
40:27if we can meet the standards
40:30of the U.S. Army.
40:31Absolutely.
40:32We've got a lot of great equipment
40:32here for you,
40:33and we could definitely
40:34give you a challenge.
40:35General, I know you have some work to do,
40:37so I'll leave you to it.
40:38Thank you very much.
40:39Whatever you throw at us,
40:40we'll try to run with it.
40:42All right.
40:42Be ready.
40:43All right.
40:43It'll be great.
40:43Thanks.
40:43Appreciate it.
40:46Now that I've blown your minds,
40:48Yep.
40:49It's your turn.
40:50She looks great.
40:52It's not the purple people eater anymore.
40:54Color match the wheels to the body.
40:56Color match the bumpers as well.
40:57It reminds me of, like,
40:5880s G.I. Joe now, kind of.
41:00You know?
41:01Yeah.
41:01Rich, let's see what's under the hood.
41:02All right.
41:03Here's the business.
41:04Wow.
41:05Mr. Downey.
41:05That is a big old black box.
41:08So right here,
41:08we have approximately half
41:10of the battery pack.
41:11The other half is in the rear,
41:13and we disguise it cleverly
41:14as a toolbox.
41:16So underneath,
41:17we have a single motor
41:18driving both the front
41:20and the rear axles.
41:22Oh, boy.
41:23Nice.
41:24Looks like a toolbox.
41:25I will mount this, Steed.
41:28Okay.
41:31What's new?
41:32There's no longer a shifter
41:33to shift the gears.
41:34Of course.
41:35So now it's touchscreen.
41:36I am so pleased
41:38with the way this turned out.
41:39This was the most fun truck
41:40I'd ever driven
41:41when it was gasoline.
41:42It's equally,
41:43if not more so,
41:44fun now.
41:44I'll take it
41:45for a little spin.
41:46All right.
41:46After which,
41:47our fate shall be revealed,
41:50and we'll see
41:50what challenge
41:51we're up against.
41:51So I hope you guys
41:53are as confident
41:54as you seem.
41:59Ready?
42:05There we go.
42:07Oh, boy.
42:10Did I get that?
42:10That's perfect.
42:11Okay.
42:12All right.
42:13So, Robert,
42:13now that we're good friends.
42:15Yes.
42:15What are we doing here?
42:17Mom's the word.
42:18I'm not telling you.
42:18Jack.
42:19Okay.
42:27Driving the truck
42:29was a revelation.
42:30The first time
42:32I stepped on it,
42:33it was bananas.
42:33You're so used
42:35to hearing the way
42:36that engine
42:37got up.
42:38It's really hard
42:39to describe
42:40how loud
42:41that truck used to be.
42:42Like,
42:43Black Hawk helicopter.
42:44Loud.
42:45Now it really reminded me
42:47of driving
42:47that electric ISV.
42:49The feeling
42:49of enormous power
42:50without the usual
42:51sonic cues
42:52from the engine.
42:53Not silent,
42:54exactly,
42:55but bizarrely quiet
42:56compared to what it was.
42:58And,
42:58loud or not,
42:59Hey, yo!
43:00you still get plenty
43:01of attention
43:01driving this thing.
43:02So all that's to say,
43:04I love it.
43:05Almost as much
43:06as I love seeing
43:07Rich squirm,
43:08I can tell he's just
43:09a little nervous
43:10about our test.
43:11So where are we going?
43:12I wish I could tell you.
43:14Honestly,
43:14I'm not too worried.
43:15This truck is a beast.
43:16I can't imagine
43:17what Robert would throw at it
43:18that it couldn't handle.
43:19We are entering
43:21range
43:21and test firing zones.
43:23So I don't want
43:24to get out here.
43:24I would say
43:25not just yet.
43:27Okay.
43:27Oh yeah.
43:28Base camp.
43:30What in the heck?
43:33What are we doing here?
43:35I don't have
43:36a military clearance though.
43:37Do you have yours?
43:38No.
43:39Oh, good afternoon.
43:43Now I'm a little worried.
43:52Yep,
43:53that was cool.
44:02The moment of truth.
44:04Yeah.
44:13That's cool.
44:14Rich.
44:15Yeah.
44:16This thing was a beast.
44:18Mm-hmm.
44:18I wanted to lose
44:20no power
44:21while we converted
44:22it to EV.
44:23Yep.
44:23But I also couldn't
44:24just let you off the hook.
44:25Clearly.
44:25So I asked my friends here
44:27at the fantastic
44:29Ford Irwin.
44:30Yeah!
44:32General,
44:33Captain,
44:34what have you devised?
44:36All right.
44:37So you know
44:37that the most awesome
44:39weapon on the
44:40modern battlefield
44:41is the M1A2
44:42Abrams tank.
44:44I've got
44:45Captain Ray Donovan here.
44:46Oh yeah.
44:46Who is our
44:47tank company commander
44:48in the 11th ACR
44:49and he's going to talk to you
44:50about the tests
44:51that we've designed.
44:52Yes sir,
44:52today we heard
44:53about your challenge
44:53so we want to bring down
44:54the M1A2
44:55Sep V2 Abrams
44:56for you.
44:5672 tons of freedom
44:57and give you that opportunity
44:59to pull it with your rig, sir.
45:00Wait,
45:00pulling a tank
45:01with whose rig?
45:01Wow.
45:03You know,
45:03I'm looking at this
45:05and, um,
45:07what's the thing it's on?
45:09Well, this is
45:09the heavy equipment
45:10transport truck
45:10and the M1000 trailer
45:12that we haul
45:12the vehicles around with.
45:13And so the tank
45:15weighs about how much?
45:16Uh, it's 72 tons.
45:18And what about the truck?
45:2048 tons, sir.
45:22Huh.
45:23Combined,
45:24that's 120 tons.
45:25It won't be able
45:25to pull that.
45:27Okay, well,
45:27Rich wants to do that
45:28instead.
45:29What do you say, people?
45:30You have Rich
45:31pulled both of them?
45:32Yeah, come on.
45:34God, I really like
45:35the way you think.
45:36Yeah.
45:37I like the way you think.
45:38Great, let's do that.
45:39All right, well, let's see.
45:40Let's give it a shot.
45:41Woo-hoo!
45:42All right, yeah.
45:43All right, we'll see.
45:43Great idea, buddy.
45:45Thank you very much.
45:46Can I talk to you
45:46for a second, Robert,
45:47in the truck for a minute?
45:49So they were going
45:49to unload this 70-ton tank
45:51off the trailer
45:52for us to tow,
45:52which was bad enough.
45:53And then Robert says,
45:54hey, let's tow the tank
45:56and the transport truck,
45:57which is 120 tons total.
46:02240,000 pounds.
46:03This far exceeds
46:04the capacities of the truck.
46:06So I'm nervous.
46:07I'm like, look, I'm shaking.
46:08Look at this hand.
46:09What was this truck designed
46:10to pull back in the 70s?
46:12Maybe 5,000 pounds?
46:15So a little over.
46:26I think we're going to need
46:27to want to add some weight
46:28to the back of your rig.
46:29Add more weight to the bed?
46:30I'm thinking at least
46:31200, 300 pounds.
46:34I mean, the same way
46:35she's going to bite,
46:36probably air down
46:36the tires too.
46:38The amount of weight
46:38we're going to be pulling
46:39is vastly outnumbering
46:40what this truck weighs,
46:41so traction's going
46:42going to be an issue.
46:43So putting the weight in
46:44is actually a great idea.
46:47Go ahead, check it real quick.
46:48What are you at, 25?
46:4925.
46:5350% might pull this off.
46:5550% might blow it up.
47:00That's quite a bit
47:00of hairstyling going on there.
47:03I'm vamping
47:03because I'm avoiding
47:05this stunt
47:06that if it doesn't go well,
47:08I'm going to really
47:10look like an idiot.
47:11Hello, sir.
47:12Hey.
47:12Best case scenario,
47:13it pulls it.
47:14Worst case,
47:15in front of all
47:15of these troops,
47:17the body separates
47:18from the frame
47:18and the show's over.
47:19No pressure.
47:22Wow, I didn't even
47:23see them back there.
47:23Look at all those guys
47:24in the tanks, man.
47:25Ow.
47:27All right, Robert.
47:28You're driving, right?
47:29Yes.
47:30Drive.
47:31Let's do it.
47:41Got the keys right here.
47:42My hand.
47:50Hold me.
47:52You got this.
47:53You got this.
47:54Ready to go?
47:55I'll release the e-brake.
48:00You are ready.
48:01You're going to go ahead
48:02and see the floor.
48:02Okay.
48:06Oh, there you go.
48:08Oh.
48:11Hold.
48:13You got this.
48:15All right, sir.
48:20You'll feel the truck pull.
48:21Keep going.
48:23Ease into it.
48:24She's going to want to bite.
48:26Ease into it.
48:39There you go.
48:40There you go.
48:41All right.
48:42All right.
48:49All right.
48:51All right.
48:52So I had this little idea
48:53to mod some of my cars
48:55to be more eco-friendly
48:56and to quote my good friend,
48:58Ron Burgundy.
48:58Boy, that escalated quickly.
49:02When I came up with this whole concept,
49:04I did not see myself
49:05ending up towing
49:06hundreds of thousands of pounds
49:07with my newly EV pickup truck.
49:10You killed it.
49:11But you know what they say
49:12when in Rome...
49:13I'll put it in neutral for you.
49:14You're all good, man.
49:15Escape.
49:20You filled me with confidence.
49:22Thank you, sir.
49:23Really appreciate it.
49:23Nice job.
49:25Nice job.
49:25These guys took my Thanos thumper,
49:27a gas-drinking,
49:28carbon-belching dragon
49:30of a vehicle
49:30and turned it into
49:31a stealth weapon
49:32capable of superhero
49:34feats of strength.
49:35With the help of General Taylor
49:36and the amazing people
49:38of Fort Irwin,
49:39we proved
49:39you can have epic amounts
49:41of power and torque
49:42without all the gas
49:43and the noise
49:44and the exhaust.
49:44So I'm calling
49:45Downey's first dream car
49:48is a big win.
49:53Now we need to think
49:54about what I'm going to do next.
49:57This is an opportunity
49:58to do something
49:59that's never been done.
50:00We're going pro!
50:01It goes against everything
50:03Dave and I stand for
50:04to mess with a car like that.
50:06I can't leave it alone.
50:08Is this going to smell
50:09like french fries
50:10when we run it or not?
50:12Nobody's ever done before.
50:13Never happened.
50:14Wait, wait, wait.
50:15The stingray?
50:17Oh, stop.
50:18Oh boy.
50:19Buckle the hell up.
50:21Let's get it!
50:23I'll give you
50:24$1,500 for it right now.
50:26I'll sell you the tires.
50:27Are you trying to hustle me?
50:29Look,
50:30the title of the show
50:31is Downey's Dream Cars.
50:35So I can dream a little bit.
50:44What's downey?
51:12And it's worth it.
