Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh): A 32-year-old labourer died after being buried in a mudslide while repairing a water pipeline in a 14-foot-deep pit on Railway Road on Saturday afternoon. A video of the incident has also surfaced, showing a large portion of soil collapsing into the pit.

The deceased, identified as Mahendra, a resident of Jawan, was working on a damaged pipeline when the incident occurred around 2 pm. He was pulled out by co-workers using a JCB and rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Mahendra’s brother, Rajkumar, alleged serious negligence and accused Junior Engineer (JE) Narendra Singh of forcing the labourers to work despite visible danger. “The soil was cracking from above. I requested him to stop the work, but he abused us and pushed my brother into the pit,” he claimed. The family also alleged that the JE fled the spot after the incident.

Following the death, family members created a ruckus at the hospital and briefly stopped police from taking the body for post-mortem, demanding action against those responsible. The situation was brought under control after police assured action.

According to the family, no safety measures such as helmets or belts were provided at the site. They also alleged that the work was being carried out without a proper tender and labourers were being made to work under pressure, even late at night.

Mahendra is survived by his wife Malti, a 16-year-old son, and an 11-year-old daughter. His wife has demanded strict action against the accused and compensation of ₹50 lakh.

However, Municipal Commissioner Prem Prakash Meena stated that safety arrangements were in place and termed the incident unfortunate. He said a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter and will submit a report within three days.

Officials have announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the victim’s family, while further action will depend on the inquiry findings. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also taken cognisance of the incident and directed officials to ensure support for the bereaved family.
