00:00So, what did you think about the Browns draft?
00:03It's fine.
00:04I actually...
00:05I don't hate it.
00:06Listen, I never hated Concepcion as much as you did.
00:08And I want that on the record.
00:10Oh, what a coward.
00:12Well, you're the one that came up with the...
00:13Well, I just want to make sure everybody...
00:14Well, you know, you...
00:16KC can't catch.
00:17You came up with the nicknames.
00:18I did.
00:19I had nothing to do with the nicknames.
00:20I just sat back.
00:20I mean, you egged me on to it.
00:21I was like, well, how am I going to remember it five years from now
00:24unless you make it catchy?
00:25And now everybody.
00:25And then you made it catchy, and then everyone...
00:27And then KC dropped it.
00:29There's people that just listen to this show that are like,
00:31Nick's got to be furious right now.
00:33Nick's got to be livid.
00:34Now, do I love Fano?
00:36I guess we'll find out.
00:37That's fine.
00:37The Concepcion part I find to be really, really interesting, though.
00:40Every wide receiver person, like the Matt Harmons of the world
00:42that discuss this type of thing,
00:44are convinced that they don't care about the drops.
00:47And I find it just an amazing development across the wide receiver.
00:50Now, I'll explain it to everyone in the audience,
00:52even though I know you guys know what their reasoning is.
00:55I feel like a child explaining this when you guys know what it is.
00:58But their thought process is that if you have six down-the-field catches in a game,
01:03the two drops you have in a game gets offset
01:06because the four big-time plays are four big-time plays
01:09that other wide receivers won't be able to make.
01:11And so everything, when you watch Concepcion,
01:15everything leading up to him catching the ball
01:17is about as good as you're going to find in this draft.
01:19And then everything after he catches the ball
01:21is about as good as you're going to find in the draft.
01:23It's just that middle part.
01:24There's the part of actually catching the ball that he's not great at.
01:29My favorite thing.
01:30So listen, if you just...
01:31So that is a fine explanation.
01:33He makes up for the drops with more incendiary plays.
01:37Fine.
01:38Because now we're dealing with a ratio that I can understand.
01:41All right?
01:42Three to one.
01:43You can be three big plays.
01:44I'll forget about that one.
01:45And that's why the wide receiver community is like,
01:47we don't really care about drops
01:48because he offsets all of that within the big plays.
01:50But to the Jamokes last night, we're like,
01:52he doesn't have drop issues.
01:56One, nine drops last year.
01:58Oh, and by the way, this goes back to NC State,
02:01which is the first time I heard of Casey Concepcion.
02:02I don't know anyone that's debating whether he has drop issues.
02:04Oh, my.
02:05The nods out on Twitter last night.
02:08Okay, they're just hiding then
02:09or not being honest with themselves.
02:10There's not a single person that you can look up
02:12and talk about Casey Concepcion
02:14with a reality attached to it
02:16that does not include drops being a major problem.
02:18And I do love that there are people who are like,
02:20well, you can coach it out of him.
02:21I think a fair amount of the drops
02:25are because the dude is thinking home run constantly,
02:28which, by the way, love the mentality.
02:31Like, when you think of that...
02:32Yeah, he's really good yards after the catch.
02:33It's like part of that reason
02:34is because he's already a step ahead
02:35when he hasn't caught the ball yet.
02:37So to the...
02:38Because I have not addressed the things I like
02:39about Casey Concepcion.
02:41I like the kid.
02:42How he's handled the conversation around stuttering.
02:45Taking did I stutter
02:47and turning it into your catchphrase
02:48when you have a stutter
02:50is boss-type stuff.
02:52Subjectively funny.
02:53Very funny as well.
02:55And by the way, it's intentionally funny.
02:56So you know he's got a such humor.
02:57I know, but when you lead with,
02:58I like the kid,
02:59as for why you like a football pick,
03:01that's not great for me.
03:02No, no, no.
03:03I've not been able to say that
03:05with a lot of the Browns' big moves.
03:07There have been guys where it's like,
03:09well, he's a dirtbag off the field,
03:11but you know what?
03:12If he plays great football,
03:13I think...
03:14I do think...
03:15Listen, I jest in saying Andrew Barry has a type.
03:18He loves wide receivers.
03:19Fast as hell that can't catch a cold.
03:21But do I have a little bit of hope?
03:24Because Casey Concepcion
03:26has everything else you need.
03:28And more importantly,
03:29both Feneau and Concepcion
03:31are guys that it looks like
03:32you can plug into that locker room
03:34and they go to the positive side of the ledger.
03:37Yes.
03:37I do like that.
03:39And I do think,
03:39kind of like with Shador,
03:40when I hear Concepcion talk,
03:43he seems like a genuine human being
03:45and I like that.
03:46That gives me something to root for,
03:48even if my mother bleep him on Sundays
03:49if he drops big plays.
03:50The past two drafts have had that.
03:52Obviously, then they've sprinkled in guys
03:53like Isaiah Bond and Judkins
03:55and there are people that we have
03:56some maybe problematic stuff
03:58we can talk about.
03:59But yeah,
03:59they've had a lot of high-quality people
04:01enter those doors
04:02in the past couple years.
04:03At least they've tried
04:04to make that part of their assessment.
04:06But like,
04:07back to the actual on-field stuff
04:08with Concepcion
04:09and what I find fascinating,
04:11you mentioned going back to NC State.
04:12You mentioned going way back
04:14with these drops.
04:15One thing that the other thing
04:16that the wide receiver community
04:18tries to tell everybody
04:19if they're not worried about the drops
04:21is like,
04:22well,
04:22sometimes it just comes in one-year spurts.
04:24They used Devontae Adams
04:26as a big,
04:27like,
04:27well,
04:27look at what happened.
04:28Devontae Adams had an amazing NFL career.
04:31Last year,
04:31who led the league in NFL drops?
04:33Devontae Adams.
04:33And it's like,
04:34well,
04:34yeah,
04:34look at it.
04:35Because one year,
04:36one isolated season,
04:37you can have more drops than not.
04:40Kenyon Sadiq is a great example of this.
04:42Sadiq had one drop three years ago,
04:44one drop two years ago,
04:46then had six drops last year
04:47and everyone freaked out about it
04:49and says he's got problems with drops.
04:50It's like,
04:51no,
04:51he just had one season
04:52where it got away from him.
04:53Concepcion's not that guy.
04:55Concepcion,
04:55this has followed him the entire way.
04:56Yes.
04:57And it comes down to,
04:59if he's a 1,200-yard guy
05:02like Zay Flowers was this last year
05:04in Baltimore,
05:05although Zay still doesn't get
05:06in the end zone a lot,
05:06if he's a 1,200-yard guy,
05:08drop the ball all you want.
05:09If you get 1,200 yards
05:11and if you're a big play machine,
05:13I'm not going to care.
05:15If you're a 500-yard player
05:17or if you're a 200-yard player,
05:20I will just fall apart
05:24every damn Sunday.
05:25But I do think it's interesting
05:26like the two things
05:27that Andrew Barry has said repeatedly
05:29or that he's shown us repeatedly.
05:31He doesn't care
05:32what side of the line you play on.
05:33He thinks right tackle
05:35and left tackle are interchangeable.
05:36Yeah, he does not care about that.
05:37And he doesn't care
05:37if you drop the ball.
05:38And this draft,
05:39he rubber-stamped that.
05:42You cannot beat the allegations anymore.
05:44You've done it now with two tackles.
05:46You've certainly done it now
05:47with more than one wide receiver.
05:49And we'll see.
05:51Odds are you've got to get
05:52one of these guys right.
05:54Listen, I can get around
05:56the Fano pick.
05:56I can.
05:58I think it's a one-year audition.
06:00And I think if a year from now,
06:02I think he's Will Campbell.
06:03I think a year from now,
06:04if we look back and go,
06:05well, I guess T-Rex arms are a problem.
06:07And he's got shorter arms
06:08than Will Campbell.
06:09Then I guess he'll be your left guard,
06:11center, or right guard.
06:12And then you'll draft
06:12another left tackle next year.
06:14Again, I can live with that
06:15because I think he's going to be
06:17a really good O-lineman
06:19wherever you play him.
06:20Not wherever,
06:20but at least he'll land somewhere
06:22and be good.
06:23And then with Concepcion,
06:24it's, hey, kid,
06:25welcome to the NFL.
06:27You're now the face of the offense
06:28from the wide receiver position.
06:29Well, I think oddly enough,
06:31at 24, I don't even know
06:32that he overtakes Jerry Judy
06:33when it comes to the amount
06:34of production that they're
06:34expecting out of him.
06:35Drop-wise?
06:36No, like production-wise.
06:38And even, I mean,
06:39they just don't take anybody
06:40that can catch.
06:41But you can see.
06:41It's overrated, clearly.
06:42You can see.
06:43Well, I mean,
06:43this is like Njoku putting
06:44that stupid jugs machine
06:45in his living room
06:46to try to catch better.
06:47Like, they constantly
06:48have this issue with guys,
06:49and it's amazing
06:50how this happens.
06:52But you can tell
06:53where Barry
06:54has his football ideologies.
06:56And that's why
06:56it's just so funny
06:57listening to all the
06:58very, very top
06:59wide receiver draft pundits.
07:01Guys,
07:02I bring up Harmon
07:03for a reason.
07:03We had him on the show
07:04a week ago,
07:04but he's like one of the
07:05go-to guys
07:06in that community
07:07when it comes to
07:07wide receivers
07:08and evaluations,
07:09and he loves Concepcion.
07:10Why?
07:11Because they just
07:12don't put an emphasis
07:13on actually catching
07:14the football.
07:14They don't care
07:15about that side of things,
07:17and they believe
07:17that it's offset
07:18by the big plays,
07:19and there's a world
07:20that exists
07:21where I can see
07:22Andrew Barry
07:23and how he just
07:23becomes dismissive of it
07:24because in the past
07:25six years,
07:26all he ever has been
07:27is dismissive of it.
07:28I will tell you,
07:29though,
07:29there is no in-between
07:30with the Browns here.
07:32People either love,
07:33and I mean love
07:35what the Browns do,
07:36or they absolutely hate it.
07:38Here's Matt Miller,
07:40ESPN NFL
07:40draft analyst
07:41on the Dan Patrick
07:42show today.
07:43I think the Browns
07:44drafted poorly last night.
07:45We get so caught up
07:46in, oh, I'm glad
07:46they traded back
07:47to get this guy instead
07:48because they got
07:49an extra draft pick.
07:50You're the Browns.
07:51You don't draft well.
07:52Extra draft picks
07:52aren't good for you.
07:53So Spencer Fano
07:54is a very good player,
07:55and he's going to shore up
07:57one spot on their
07:58offensive line.
07:59I'm not a fan of
08:00Casey Concepcion
08:01as early as they took him.
08:02I think small receivers
08:03who have drop issues
08:04are probably not going
08:05to play well
08:05in the AFC North.
08:06That would be my
08:07number one concern
08:08with a player like that.
08:09So I don't think
08:10the Browns draft
08:11particularly well,
08:12and that's not me
08:13being a hater.
08:14That's 27 years now
08:16of data that says
08:17they don't.
08:18All right.
08:18That's Dan Patrick
08:19with an audience,
08:19not a laugh track.
08:20Yeah.
08:21Well, I mean,
08:22he does have an audience
08:23every day because he's got
08:23like five guys that are
08:24in the studio,
08:25and there's Fitzy and J-Mo
08:27and Timmy C.
08:30I think Ice-T's in there
08:31somewhere.
08:32He's not in law and order.
08:33In between breaks
08:33and law and order.
08:35Why are you so surprised?
08:36Ice-T, you've been doing
08:37this for 10 years.
08:38So it's funny.
08:40I kind of went Larry David
08:42as I was listening to that
08:43clip earlier today
08:44because it was like,
08:45on one hand,
08:46I agree with the assessment
08:48that I think so much
08:49of people loving it
08:50was, oh, you traded down.
08:52And draft analysts
08:54and analytics folks,
08:56they love trade downs.
08:57If you get more value
08:59than they thought
08:59you were going to get
09:00out of a spot,
09:01you're going to get
09:02massive credit for that.
09:03And in fairness,
09:04I did think a third
09:06and a five
09:06to move down three spots
09:08in this draft,
09:09where they were going,
09:11that was quality, right?
09:13But it shouldn't overtake
09:15how you feel about
09:15Spencer Fano.
09:16And the Casey Concepcion thing,
09:18like to me,
09:19this will be the draft
09:20that decides
09:21whether Andrew Barry's
09:22here for the long run
09:23or not.
09:24Because this draft
09:25should be the thing
09:26that gives whatever you did,
09:28if you're going to take
09:29a tackle and a wide receiver,
09:30whatever you did
09:31had to give this year
09:33a chance.
09:34Doesn't mean it's going
09:35to work out,
09:35but had to give it
09:36a chance on offense.
09:38And even more importantly,
09:40this is supposed to set up
09:41that if you get in a position
09:43to take a quarterback
09:43next year,
09:44it's not even a question.
09:46You don't have to worry
09:46about left tackle.
09:47You don't have to worry
09:48about who's going to
09:49catch the damn passes.
09:50And so I can absolutely see
09:53this draft working out.
09:55I'm not infallible.
09:56I could be wrong
09:57about Casey Concepcion.
09:58He could be on the right
09:59side of the ledger
09:59with two or three to one
10:01big plays to drops.
10:03I'm leaving open to that.
10:04We got no chance.
10:05We got no choice,
10:05by the way.
10:06They're like,
10:07all right,
10:07this is what you did.
10:08But if a year from now,
10:10neither of those guys
10:11made a big impact this year,
10:13I don't think Andrew Barry
10:14is going to be making this pick
10:15because these are crucial,
10:16crucial picks.
10:17And you went for need.
10:18Well,
10:18need means these guys
10:19need to step in
10:20and be day one contributors
10:21at a big level.
10:22And he set himself up
10:22where both of them
10:23could end up being contributors,
10:25but not in the way
10:25that you'd expect
10:26out of first rounders.
10:27Like,
10:27Fano,
10:28there's a real world
10:28that exists out there
10:29where Fano hasn't played
10:30the left side.
10:31And they said last night,
10:32he's going to be
10:32the left tackle.
10:33Okay,
10:33great.
10:34But he hadn't played it
10:35since his freshman year
10:35of college.
10:36There's a real world
10:36that exists out there
10:37where he doesn't look good
10:38and then you have to
10:38kick him inside to guard
10:40or you're constantly
10:40moving him along the line
10:42and you wake up
10:43three years from now
10:43and it just has never
10:44really materialized
10:45or worked out.
10:46And there's just
10:47his likelihood
10:48of a scenario
10:49that Concepcion
10:50has the drops issues
10:51and is out of the league
10:52three years from now
10:53because he can't
10:54catch the football.
10:55It could end up
10:56disastrous.
10:57It could.
10:58I'm not betting on that,
10:59but that possibility
11:00does exist.
11:01He took risks
11:02in ways that I wouldn't
11:03have if I were him.
11:04So,
11:04for me,
11:06I'm one of the doubles
11:07off the wall.
11:07I am the rare guy
11:09in the middle.
11:10I'm not Matt Miller
11:11and I'm not,
11:12oh gosh,
11:12who is the guy
11:13that I,
11:13one of the big names
11:14that really loved
11:15what they did.
11:16Well,
11:16I'm just going to guess
11:17on air.
11:17I don't remember.
11:18But the point is,
11:19like,
11:20I think Fano
11:22is totally acceptable
11:23at nine.
11:25And I did like
11:26the trade down.
11:27I would have rather
11:28Jordan Tyson at six,
11:30but I get it.
11:31I understand we had
11:31a difference of philosophy.
11:32They were going to draft
11:33a tackle no matter what
11:34first.
11:35Even if they had stuck
11:36at six,
11:36I think they're going
11:37tackle first.
11:39It's the Concepcion
11:40thing that I'm just,
11:41now we're in
11:42prove it mode.
11:42Like,
11:43I'll root for the kid
11:43because he,
11:44again,
11:44I'm going to say this.
11:45I really like the person
11:46and the personality
11:47that I've seen out of him
11:49in every aspect.
11:50And I do think,
11:51by the way,
11:51for a little dude,
11:53he's got some of that
11:54chihuahua in him.
11:55Like,
11:55he does.
11:56He's 5'11".
11:57I mean,
11:58I know he's a tiny receiver,
11:59but like.
12:00That's a little wide receiver.
12:01No,
12:01but you're giving him
12:02the Dylan Gabriel treatment
12:03with the chihuahua.
12:04No,
12:04no,
12:05what I mean is,
12:05he's a feisty little fella.
12:07You called him a chihuahua.
12:09He's a feisty little fella.
12:10Just a badly short dog.
12:11Okay,
12:11what's a bigger,
12:12he's a golden dude.
12:13No,
12:13that's a big dog.
12:14What,
12:14a Bichon Poo?
12:15What the,
12:16I don't know,
12:16what's a bigger than a,
12:17something respectable at least.
12:18What's not a Labrador,
12:19but not a chihuahua.
12:20Something that isn't selling me
12:21Taco Bell at least.
12:22But definitely he's trying
12:22to bite my toes.
12:23That's what he's got.
12:24And I do like that part of him.
12:26And listen,
12:27this is always how I,
12:28I'm always interested,
12:29you know,
12:29Steve Smith came out
12:30and loves Casey Concepcion.
12:32And what I've noted is,
12:34it doesn't matter your skill set
12:36with Smitty.
12:37It doesn't.
12:38He likes big receivers
12:39and likes small receivers
12:40like in between.
12:41He likes guys
12:41that he can't,
12:42can't catch,
12:42can't catch.
12:43He loves,
12:44the one thing Smitty cares about
12:45is do you have a little bit
12:47of that dog in you?
12:49And I do think Casey Concepcion
12:51has that.
12:52I mean,
12:52I'm not much worried
12:53about the dog and more,
12:54I love the idea that again,
12:55before the actual catch
12:57is supposed to be made,
12:58he does a lot
12:59that I really like.
13:00And I think does
13:00at a high level
13:01and then yards
13:02after the catch
13:03are incredible.
13:04And so he's got,
13:05he's got so many facets
13:06of the game
13:06that you can fall in love with.
13:08He just,
13:08you know,
13:09hell,
13:09if this was the 80s,
13:10we'd just give him
13:10a bunch of super glue
13:11and we'd call it a day,
13:12Nick.
13:12That's true.
13:13Or just,
13:13just stick him.
13:14Stick him.
13:14Yeah.
13:15And we would just,
13:15he'd just be one of the best
13:16wide receivers the game
13:17has ever seen.
13:17There's so much to like
13:19when you watch his tape.
13:19There really is.
13:20There's so much
13:20just in general to enjoy.
13:22He just has to fix the drops.
