00:00Let's talk to the quarterback.
00:11Jared, as always, we appreciate your time.
00:13Thanks for being with us.
00:13And I just want to start with, you know, as that game progressed and you get it,
00:18and it's a huge, huge win, but the injuries and certainly the scary one
00:22to Jack Campbell was tough.
00:24How are you guys feeling now a couple days later as news is coming out
00:29that it's at least positive?
00:32Yeah, you know, we're doing all right.
00:33Obviously, a lot of injuries that affected a lot of guys' seasons,
00:37but certainly the one that's the scariest is Jack.
00:40And, again, yeah, the positive updates are great, and we know that, yeah,
00:46things are heading in the right direction right now and hoping for the best for him.
00:51I got to imagine this was a week that when you got home afterwards,
00:55maybe completely exhausted.
00:57You got emotional and a physical drain of the game,
00:59not just because of what happened with Jack and the others that got hurt,
01:02but also having to solve that defense and ultimately doing just that.
01:07I mean, that's a team that you got to pay attention to every split second
01:11that you're out there.
01:13You're exactly right.
01:14Got home that night and was ready to go to sleep, and they do a good job.
01:18They keep it on you all day long, and they keep bringing it in.
01:22They're really good.
01:23They're really good on defense, and we had our hands full,
01:26and I thought we handled it really well and really were the first team that was able
01:29to play a full four-quarter game against them and not get flustered or frustrated
01:34and just stay patient, stay in it.
01:36There were a lot of performances, individual performances in that game,
01:41and we took a lot of calls from fans yesterday.
01:43And probably the one that stood out that got the most praise, Jared, was Sione Vocky.
01:48People loved what Sione did in that game.
01:50Can you tell us a little bit about the buildup for him
01:53and his contribution in that game against Minnesota?
01:57Yeah, it was great.
01:58I mean, we were running the ball really well in all facets,
02:00and for him to get in there at the end.
02:02I mean, he ran good all game, but really at the end there in the fourth quarter
02:05to kind of spell Gibbs a little bit and give him a little bit of a breather.
02:08He had a run there.
02:08I believe it was on like second and seven or longer,
02:12and he got us to like third and one with a second effort,
02:14and that was one of the biggest plays of the game.
02:17We converted the third and one, kept the drive moving, and he was great.
02:20He was really good in pass protection as well,
02:21and we were doing a lot of stuff with him, and it was complex, and he did a good job.
02:26How much has he grown since week one, let alone since his rookie season last year?
02:32Yeah, a ton, a ton, and he's really stepped into that role now at this point.
02:35I think we feel really comfortable with him.
02:38I saw Dan said he gained a ton of trust, and I think that's exactly what happened.
02:43We see that role continue to expand for him.
02:46I would imagine the more trust he gains and the better he plays.
02:49What's it like for you guys on offense to now see the defense,
02:53which early in the year was struggling to keep teams off the scoreboard,
02:57to see them come around and do their part?
02:59Because I know they work hard, and I know you've got a ton of respect for them,
03:02and they're finally getting rewarded with some results on the field.
03:06Yeah, man, they've been playing great.
03:08They really have, I think, ever since that Arizona game,
03:11which came on the heels of the Carolina game, I believe, right?
03:15Ever since that game, they've played phenomenal for us
03:18and really kept us in the game against Green Bay and this week specifically.
03:23So, yeah, they deserve their praise, and I know they just want to keep going.
03:27The commitment to the run for you guys, I think, is one of the keys to the offense getting going.
03:31What did you see in the first half that would have given you confidence
03:34that you were going to be able to run the ball in the second half
03:37because it was such a big disparity that was 60-something yards rushing in the first half
03:41and over 160 in the second half?
03:44You know, I don't know.
03:45I think all week we just talked about patience.
03:47I think the way that they like to play the game,
03:50and they want to get on you early and set the tone, and that's all good,
03:53and you've got to weather that storm a little bit.
03:56It's just about patience with them.
03:57Just stay in it, stay in it, stay in it.
03:59They've won every game by, you know, three points, scoring less than 20.
04:03So, you know, we figured if we can just stay in it
04:05and our defense continues to play well, that dam will break eventually,
04:08and it certainly did.
04:10I know you're going to get asked a ton of questions about blocking,
04:12but I think we were the first to talk about your blocking.
04:15Was the block you threw against Metellus, was that the best block of your career?
04:22Metellus?
04:23Of my career, I don't know.
04:25That was a good one.
04:26That was certainly a big collision.
04:28And he was really trying to get me there.
04:30So I appreciate that.
04:32He was not treating me like a quarterback, as he shouldn't.
04:36And I was out there on the perimeter, and he was trying to get me,
04:39and I felt like it was an even fight.
04:44Did you hear what Tom Brady said about that?
04:48No.
04:48He said, no, not your right shoulder, Jared.
04:51Lead with your left shoulder.
04:53Yeah, no, I know.
04:55Yeah, well, I can't control that when I'm out there.
04:58I don't hope to make a living of it, but when Gibbs cuts back like that,
05:01I've got to do something.
05:02And then chasing down Gibbs on the touchdown run.
05:06You were looking for somebody on that one.
05:10Yeah, well, I figured he was going to make that guy miss who was in front of him,
05:14and I thought exactly what happened could happen, where he was going to make him miss,
05:17and then I was going to have a chance to block the last guy, which was Harrison there.
05:21And sure enough, got a piece of Harrison, and I think that helped him get in.
05:25These guys talking to you after those collisions?
05:29Who?
05:30Harrison Smith or Josh Metellus?
05:33I mean, I barely touched Harrison, but yeah, Metellus and I were having a little bit of fun.
05:38A couple other plays.
05:39The touchdown pass to J-Mo that put you guys ahead.
05:43We've talked about free throws versus fastballs.
05:46That was more of a free throw, just a nice little touch into the corner of the end zone.
05:49But take us through that play from beginning to end.
05:53Yeah, we had a pretty good feeling he could run by anyone who's trying to cover him over there,
05:57and he did.
05:59It was a similar play we threw for the touchdown to him against Arizona.
06:03Where I was able to hold the corner down to that side and throw it over his head.
06:08You had that CFL-style throw to Amon Ross St. Brown.
06:12I imagine that the timing, I know you said you spent like three days working on it.
06:15The timing on that has to be really tough for you,
06:18because you're throwing to a different direction.
06:20It's not like throwing to somebody coming across the middle.
06:23Effectively, that is what it is, but you've got to pivot 90 degrees to do it.
06:26Can you talk about that play and the timing of it?
06:30Yeah, we did it in practice, and we probably spent like five minutes after practice
06:35just making sure the timing of it was what we wanted.
06:39I think whenever you have a guy like Saint, you're able to do a lot of these things
06:42that other teams can't because you just trust them so much to make it right no matter what.
06:46And a lot of teams don't have that guy.
06:48You go back to when we run the hook and ladder play to him, he flips it to Gibbs or
06:54to Jamo.
06:55I don't think you can count five teams that have a guy that they're willing to throw it to
06:59and let him make that decision to pitch it accurately and make all that work.
07:03And this is another one of those plays where it is weird, it is wacky,
07:06and he kind of needs to run with a certain tempo to make it work.
07:10So we're lucky to have a versatile guy like him that can do stuff like that.
07:14I just threw it out there, and he did the rest.
07:15Have you had plays in practice that you think are going to work and you keep trying,
07:19they just don't work out, and you're like, you know what, we're going to scrap this one.
07:23It's just, we've got to give up.
07:25We're trying too hard, it just doesn't work.
07:28That happens all the time.
07:29Does it?
07:30All the time, yeah.
07:31Interesting.
07:32Yeah, there's plays that you have ideas, and coaches have ideas, and I like something,
07:37and you go out and try it, and it doesn't play out like you think it would have.
07:40And, hey, we'll try again maybe next week, or maybe it's dead forever.
07:43You know, it's just sometimes it doesn't, you're trying stuff,
07:46and sometimes stuff happens on accident.
07:48You're like, ooh, man, that might be good.
07:49And then you work it out, and it does work.
07:52Interesting.
07:52Can you give us an example of something that happened by accident that we've seen on the field?
07:58Gosh.
08:01I can't give you a perfect example right now, but I...
08:05Well, maybe we'll circle back to it.
08:06It's a lot of times with, like, the past concepts, like somebody runs the wrong route,
08:11and you're like, actually, I like where they went.
08:13And you're like, maybe we should do it that way.
08:15It does happen more than you think.
08:17And then you work it out, and you're like, okay, versus this coverage, versus this coverage,
08:20and sometimes you leave it in.
08:22All right, so the end of the game, the quarterback sneak.
08:25Do you walk to the line of scrimmage and audible into that, or is that called in the huddle,
08:28or is that, you know, or you don't want to tell us?
08:31That one was called in the huddle.
08:33We do it all sorts of different ways, but that one in particular was just called in the run.
08:36And then what happened after the last kneel down?
08:39You were in the middle of a little kerfuffle there.
08:41Oh, kerfuffle.
08:43What do you mean?
08:43You saw it?
08:44Well, what happened?
08:45I didn't have a great view of it.
08:48The TV replay, you kind of got lost.
08:50You got lost in the wash.
08:52Looked like I got punched in the face is what happened.
08:54Oh, yeah, okay.
08:56And I saw the teammates all gathered around you, but...
09:01That's uncalled for.
09:04Yeah, you know, I mean, they wanted to do whatever they wanted to on the kneel down when the game's
09:08over,
09:09and there were some words, and I'm sure there'll be a fine for somebody.
09:13There you go.
09:15The officials in the game, a couple of taunting penalties against the wide receivers.
09:19Whether or not that was warranted, I don't really care,
09:22but a lot of people were questioning whether or not that was just the officials getting back at you guys
09:26for the Peanuts celebration that you had after getting the Packers to jump off sides a week ago.
09:32Yeah, I don't know if it was them getting back at us.
09:34I think we were warned not to do certain things,
09:38and again, I don't know if what we did even merited it, regardless of the warning.
09:42So, whatever, we'll deal with it.
09:45We tow the line, and you don't want to step over it,
09:48but I think they were looking for something that game, certainly,
09:51and whatever, deal with it.
09:53All right, so every week we get a fan question,
09:57and this week, Kang, who do we got?
09:59We got this one all the way from Wisconsin.
10:01Zach and his family, they're all Lions fans, I guess, that live in Wisconsin,
10:04and they sent this one to you, Jared.
10:06They say they noticed in the Little Caesars commercial that you're in
10:10that you're laying down sideways, but you're laying on a bearskin rug.
10:13Is that an intentional ode to you own the Bears,
10:16and are they your biggest rival?
10:22That was intentional.
10:23I don't know if the suggestion of why it's intentional is correct,
10:28but, yeah, that was intentional.
10:29I didn't make the set, but that was there when I got there,
10:32and I would imagine, yes, it was because we have them in our division,
10:36and we want to beat them every time we play them.
10:38Do you have a bearskin rug at home?
10:41No, no, I don't.
10:43I don't.
10:44Maybe one day.
10:46Maybe one day I'll put one down in a man cave or something.
10:48We would be remiss, and I apologize, circling back to you play Miami this weekend.
10:53This feels like a challenging game given all the injuries
10:56and coming off two huge in-division games.
10:59I feel like this is a big test of you guys Sunday.
11:03Do you agree?
11:05Yeah, I think so.
11:06I do.
11:06I think there's an emotional component of this
11:10with the gravity of the Green Bay and the Minnesota both in-division games
11:16and how much we want to win those
11:18and then what's going on with Jack.
11:21So we do have to rally ourselves here throughout this week
11:24and be aware of some of those external components
11:27and make sure we're ready to go down to Miami.
11:30A team that played really well last week against New England
11:33and has done a lot of good things this year and are getting better.
11:36I think that's the thing you see first off on tape
11:38is every week they seem to have gotten better,
11:39so we've got our hands full.
11:41Jared, we appreciate your time.
11:42As always, thanks for joining us, and we'll talk again next week.
11:45All right, guys. Thank you.
11:47Thanks, Jared.
11:47There he is, Jared Goff, quarterback of the Detroit Lions,
11:49Heard Weekly here on Carson Anderson on 97.1.
