00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03A Cushman ice cream cart.
00:05I would like some kind of Italian flag in there somewhere.
00:08Hmm.
00:08Maybe a little gold in there.
00:10There's a fine line between gaudy and badass.
00:14The two of us partnering up like this,
00:16I am gonna immortalize it.
00:19I cannot believe Rick stuck me with this new guy, Leonard.
00:22Smile.
00:23You gotta be me.
00:25Gotta have a little game plan what we're doing here.
00:27All right.
00:27When you running the show, let me know now, huh?
00:30Are you running the show?
00:34I'm Rick Dale.
00:36And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:40To give new life...
00:43to pieces from the past.
00:46Every project has its challenges.
00:48But there's no job we can't handle.
00:52This...
00:53is American Restoration.
00:59I recently brought some new guys into the shop,
01:01and mixing personalities is a lot like mixing paint.
01:06Sometimes people don't blend as well as we would like.
01:09All right, who the hell glued my tools to this board?
01:11Let me get a tissue for you.
01:14And other times, an unusual combination could have potential.
01:18Your enthusiasm for this kind of stuff is sort of like what I feel.
01:21You know, maybe we'll get Ron and you together,
01:24and you guys can go on a pick as a team.
01:26Let's do it!
01:26Oh, we can have so much fun!
01:27You're gonna be kidding me!
01:28Every crew has their issues.
01:30But my job as boss is to get the best workout out of everyone
01:33and get them to figure out how to work together.
01:37Yeah!
01:38Yeah?
01:38Come here!
01:42I'm Rick.
01:43Hi, Rick. I'm Margaret.
01:44Margaret. Good to meet you.
01:45You too.
01:46This is a 62 Cushman.
01:48A Cushman ice cream cart?
01:49That thing's awesome.
01:51Cushmans were so cool and so reliable.
01:54They had a scooter and three-wheeled unit they put out.
01:57And they were very good with gas.
01:58It was like 75 miles to a gallon.
02:00Okay.
02:01They were so popular and so well-built
02:03that next thing you know they got a contract with the government
02:06and they ended up going to World War II.
02:08And in the war, they were dropping them out of planes
02:10and all of our military personnel were using them.
02:13Then when the war was over, they had no place to use them.
02:16So they started to make them into ice cream carts.
02:20So where'd you get this?
02:21It was a prop in a restaurant in Reno that had a 50s and 60s theme
02:25that had closed.
02:26Okay.
02:27I've had it for about 10 years,
02:28but I'd actually like to have it restored and running as a gift.
02:32Ah.
02:33There's a company in Reno that I do business with
02:35that is celebrating their 50th anniversary.
02:38Okay.
02:39One of the founders passed away in 2011, and his name was Jack.
02:43So I was interested in having it restored for Jack's son, Rick.
02:47What do you see this looking like?
02:49I would like some kind of a patriotic theme.
02:52Stars and stripes?
02:53Stars and stripes.
02:54Maybe some flags blowing in the wind, whatever.
02:57So 4th of July, basically.
02:59Yeah, 4th of July.
03:00I love it.
03:01I love it.
03:01That's what this is.
03:03It's all American.
03:04The company is also very proud of their Italian heritage.
03:07So I somehow like to throw maybe an Italian flag in there somewhere also.
03:11Hmm.
03:11Maybe a little gold in there for effect.
03:14Effect?
03:15Yeah.
03:15Gold?
03:16On the art, do you want most of the art here, or do you want it everywhere?
03:20Everywhere.
03:21Hmm.
03:23With all that going on.
03:24Very busy.
03:25Yeah, kind of busy.
03:26All right.
03:27As flags flying.
03:29Hmm.
03:30In my head, I'm picturing those conflicting colors and themes on it.
03:34This thing could end up looking like a Yankee Doodle disaster on a pile of spaghetti.
03:39No offense to anyone in the world, but there's a fine line between gaudy and badass.
03:45I like it to be 100% badass.
03:48So I want to get a little bit more out of you.
03:50Okay.
03:50Okay.
03:50I think they'll probably display it maybe out in front of their business in the summertime.
03:54Okay.
03:54If we just put a flag on there, it's not going to be as cool.
03:57So I think what we need to do is do a flowing, waving thing to where it actually comes all
04:01the way down and out.
04:03And it'll look really, really cool.
04:05Great.
04:06In order to get this thing totally restored, you know, I want to do it just exactly how you want
04:11it.
04:11And that is going to have a lot of custom paint going on in there.
04:13We're going to have to tear it all the way down, go all the way down to bare metal.
04:16We're redoing all the body work.
04:18We're redoing all the chrome.
04:19We're doing the seat.
04:21I've got to rebuild the motor.
04:22No matter what, it's got to come apart.
04:24I'm looking at $13,000 to get the whole thing all running again just how you want it.
04:29Okay.
04:30Um, it's a little more than I wanted to spend.
04:34Yeah.
04:35But you said it, the Cushman's Iconic.
04:38The company I want to give it to is very generous to every good cause in Northern Nevada.
04:44So let's do it.
04:46All right.
04:46Awesome, awesome, cool.
04:48I can't wait.
04:48I really hope Rick nails this because I want the person that's receiving it to be really excited about it.
04:58Now, I am so excited about our first pick.
05:01I still cannot believe you caught him in a...
05:04Go on on this.
05:05During a recent project, we came across this history whiz kid, Leonard.
05:09He claims to be a picker.
05:11So Rick's making me take him on the road and see how he does.
05:13I think this is a historic moment.
05:16The two of us partnering up like this, I am going to immortalize it.
05:21Smile.
05:22You got to be me.
05:24The two of us look good.
05:26So what are we picking today?
05:28You'll see it when we get there, all right?
05:29Just need to know that you're on a pick with me and you're going to do things my way.
05:33Okay.
05:34I have no idea what kind of field experience Leonard has.
05:37So the best way to test him is to throw him in the deep end of the pool to see
05:41if he's a swimmer or a sinker.
05:42I kind of have to go to the bathroom.
05:46No!
05:54Follow me, Chris.
05:55I think you're going to like this.
05:56I want my new guy, Chris, to help tear down the Cushman and then go over the motor so that
06:00I can focus on the artwork.
06:02I need him and Cowboy to work on this together.
06:06They haven't had a great relationship yet, but they better suck it up.
06:10Lincoln, Nebraska.
06:11Yeah.
06:12The motor itself looks pretty clean, but what I want you guys to do is pull the motor out and
06:17then we'll bench test it.
06:18Wouldn't it be good to, like, try to get it running now and take it for a little ride, see
06:21how the front end brakes are working?
06:22Well, I don't want to fire it up first.
06:24I'd rather just bench fire it, you know what I mean?
06:26It's usually fun to, you know, get it fired up, take it around, see what it's doing, you know?
06:30My thing is, as you guys are doing the tear down, you'll be able to inspect it as you go,
06:33hopefully.
06:34Okay?
06:35What I want you to do is pull the motor, pull the box, pull the sheet metal, because I need
06:39to get it apart so we can get started on the bodywork.
06:41So, let's get it done, alright?
06:43Okay.
06:44The last time I worked on the motor, I hit a few speed bumps coming out of the gate.
06:51Um...
06:52So, I really want to impress the heck out of Rick and get this Cushman motor up and running as
06:56fast as possible.
06:58I guess we'll get this, uh, box off first.
07:01Do what you want.
07:02Why don't you leave all the little stuff until we get the big stuff down?
07:05If you're talking, you ain't working.
07:07Eh, I'm working and I'm, uh, I'm talking.
07:09I've been working here almost 17 years. There's no way some new guy's gonna come in here and try to
07:14tell me what to do.
07:17What are you doing? Taking all the screws out?
07:19Taking the top off.
07:19Don't you think I'm better off just getting the whole thing off?
07:21I'm gonna take the top off so I can look inside it.
07:23It's gonna come off anyway.
07:25We're gonna have a little game plan what we're doing here.
07:27You ever bench test the motor before, cowboy?
07:31All right, well, you running the show, let me know now, huh?
07:34Are you running the show?
07:35I was hired because I don't need...
07:37You're running the show, tell me what you wanna do.
07:38I don't need my hand held from start to finish.
07:39Tell me what you want me to do.
07:41Let's get the box off in one piece.
07:43I ain't getting on my f***ing knees.
07:44You can bend right over and grab it. It's not a big deal.
07:47We pick the box up, bring it inside, and then we'll take all the little stuff.
07:50Why are we gonna waste an hour?
07:51You're talking. That's waste.
07:53I don't know how this teardown turned into a pissing contest with cowboy,
07:57but the sooner we get this done, the faster I can get the hell away from him.
08:00Here we go.
08:02Ooh, crap dust.
08:09I can't work like this.
08:11I gotta get this thing running.
08:13It'll take me ten minutes to find out what we're up against.
08:17Take a look around and tell me what you think's cool.
08:20There! There! He got it! I got it!
08:22And it's in perfect condition, not a single dent.
08:25Rick, your boy's out there doing, like, the exact opposite of what you wanted done.
08:31Uh-oh.
08:33Hey! Chris!
08:43I can't work like this.
08:45I gotta get this thing running.
08:48It'll take me ten minutes to find out what we're up against.
08:55Chris.
08:57What the hell?
08:59He was just here five minutes ago.
09:02Where in the hell is he at?
09:03I don't know.
09:06Sean.
09:06You see Chris?
09:07Who?
09:08Chris.
09:10Bud, you see Chris?
09:12What the f*** is Chris?
09:13The new guy.
09:14The weirdo.
09:19What in the hell are you doing?
09:22I'm just rigging this thing up so I can start it and take it for a ride.
09:24That is not what Rick wanted.
09:26You know what?
09:27If I have something with a motor, I'd like to get it going, start it up, take it for a
09:30little ride, see what it's all about.
09:32It's all up to you.
09:34Son of a b****.
09:40Rick.
09:41What's up?
09:42Your boy's out there doing like the exact opposite of what you wanted done.
09:46Like what?
09:46Where's he at?
09:47Oh, look.
09:48He's out front.
09:49I don't like ratting people out, but with Chris I make an exception.
09:53Chris!
09:54Hey!
09:55Chris!
09:56Beer!
09:58Couldn't hear you.
09:59Having too much fun.
10:00What are you doing?
10:01I told you to bench test that.
10:03How come it's still on?
10:04You know, there's a motor sitting around.
10:05Don't you want to just get it started and, you know, take it for a little putt?
10:08I mean, I know you're new, but there's reasons why I say what I say.
10:12Okay?
10:13One warning.
10:14Now, get that thing off on the bench and get this thing apart between sandblasts now, okay?
10:20I don't like cracking the whip on new guys because I know there's a steep learning curve.
10:24But they gotta stick to the game plan, otherwise the whole team falls apart.
10:30Are we here?
10:31Are we here?
10:32Yes.
10:32We're here.
10:33Oh, man.
10:34It's an auto yard!
10:36Yeah!
10:37Look at all these cool cars.
10:39That's so awesome.
10:42Look at that one!
10:43Hey, hey, hey!
10:44Come on.
10:46All right, dude.
10:47Take a look around and tell me what you think's cool.
10:50Leonard knew a little background on some of our boneyard items, but the real art of picking
10:54is to be surrounded by junk and knowing what you should buy and what you should walk away from.
10:59Oh, check out that one over there.
11:01This is what you're interested in?
11:03I mean, look, it's a hearst, but it's a Cadillac hearst.
11:08Superior Coach Company, they used to build all sorts of hearsts and ambulances back in
11:12the day that would take existing brands like Cadillac and elongate them so you could fit
11:18a body in the back.
11:19Hold on, let me see that.
11:20Sure.
11:22You're me.
11:24You knew what this was.
11:25Yeah.
11:26I know pretty much everything, cars included.
11:30This baby right here is the Nash Air Flight, the most sophisticated car of its time.
11:37A technological wonder.
11:39The airflow went over the car in the most optimal manner possible by the technology of its time.
11:48You know all the facts, which is awesome.
11:50You are the trivia master, but you've got two huge dents.
11:55I mean huge, okay?
11:56That's a lot of manpower going into it, making us go over budget.
11:59Can't you, like, use a hammer or something to nail it into place?
12:06He's got to learn the difference between a good pick and a bad pick,
12:10or all that trivia stuff is useless.
12:12Just because something's cool doesn't mean it's worth buying.
12:16There!
12:17There!
12:17We got it!
12:18I got it!
12:19You know what this is?
12:20This is a grader.
12:21It was actually used to build Highway 93.
12:24I mean, it's babies like this that created the Great American Roads.
12:28And it's in perfect condition.
12:30Not a single den.
12:31This is America right here.
12:32Hey, hey, hey, listen.
12:32I don't care if it was used as a great, like, Route 66.
12:35Get your squirrely ass down here, all right?
12:38And come here.
12:39I think we move onward and see if we can actually do something right.
12:43So just a recap.
12:45Leonard's like a car for dead people, an aerodynamic wreck, and two tons of scrap metal.
12:50This pick is slowly going down the drain inch by inch.
12:55Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on.
12:56Check this out.
12:57This is a 41 Willys Coupe right here.
12:59This is Rick's favorite car right here.
13:01He would love to get one of these.
13:03I don't think this is it.
13:05What?
13:05Yeah.
13:06See that little logo thing over there?
13:08Of course.
13:09This is a LaSalle.
13:10Probably 1940.
13:12Hey, you can't argue with the logo.
13:14It seems that I'm schooling Ron more than he's schooling me.
13:19It's okay.
13:20We'll get one wrong once in a while.
13:22Move on.
13:22Go.
13:23We didn't find anything worth buying today, but I gotta admit, Leonard knows his stuff.
13:27And with some training, he might even make a decent partner.
13:30I just gotta stock up on aspirin and earplugs.
13:35Things have been moving right along on a custom scooter we're restoring.
13:39Manny smoothed out all the bodywork so we can get it ready for paint.
13:44And we're reupholstering the white driver's seat so that they can drive it around in style.
13:49So while they're finishing that up, I gotta focus on my paintwork with my two artists,
13:53Ted and the new guy, Nico.
13:56Okay, I called you guys both out here because both of you have entirely different styles.
14:00So I wanted to get some different ideas for this piece, okay?
14:03This is a Cushman ice cream cart.
14:06So the customer wants a flag or something patriotic on the whole thing.
14:10I'll throw you another wrench.
14:12She wanted an Italian theme to it also.
14:15So somewhere we'll incorporate the Italian thing.
14:18How about an Italian license plate?
14:19Yeah, something like that.
14:21That'd be good.
14:21Italian ice.
14:22I don't know.
14:22Something like that.
14:23Show me what you got and we'll figure it out.
14:25Alright, cool.
14:27Both of these guys are very talented artists in their own right.
14:30Nico has a graphic illustration background, while Ted is more of an old school hand painter.
14:36Ted and I have done a lot of projects together, so he knows the drill.
14:39But I'm really curious to see what kind of fresh ideas Nico can bring to the table.
14:44Alright guys, you ready to show me what you got?
14:47Ready as all ever.
14:48Yeah.
14:49Who wants to go first?
14:50I'll go first.
14:51Okay.
14:52I want to do something that makes it look cold, frost on top, give it a little blue with white,
14:56so I add lighter blue, sky blues, and go from there.
14:58I see you signed it.
15:00I always sign my stuff.
15:02Alright.
15:03No matter what it is, I sign it.
15:04Alright.
15:05Now, me on the other hand, you know, you gotta remember, this is 60s, you know, and the style of
15:09the 60s was not that crazy.
15:10Red and blue stripes with some silver or white stars, not a lot of airbrushing, not a lot of color
15:15gradients.
15:16It would have been something clean and easy.
15:18Alright.
15:19Of these two, what I really like about Nico's, I love the dripping ice cream on there, and I like
15:24the flag, how it runs through the bottom of it, you know?
15:27Ted's, I love the swooping stars and stripes in here, and the delicious, you know, we do so much, you
15:33know, 50s and 60s stuff, that basically says it.
15:36And it's very important to go period correct with me.
15:38Right.
15:39So, you know guys, I like both of them, but the artwork that I'm gonna go with is gonna be
15:49Ted's.
15:49This one right here says everything come.
15:52Okay.
15:52This is the one I like the best.
15:53Shut the front door.
15:54He did it in pen, that's why you like that.
15:56Yeah.
15:57Yeah, well, whatever.
15:58Alright, well, it's nice.
15:59I'll give him that.
15:59It is very nice.
16:00Alright.
16:00Yeah, one of the things that you might wanna do is maybe where this says delicious, maybe say delicioso.
16:06Perfect.
16:06Okay.
16:07So, you got the Italian.
16:08Well, this ain't capiche.
16:09Yeah, capiche.
16:10Okay.
16:11So, let's go ahead and get started painting, alright?
16:13Alright.
16:13Good job.
16:14Alright.
16:15Using screws is an effective way to join wood as long as it doesn't split.
16:20But if the wood is dry and the boards are narrow, the screw can force the fibers apart and it
16:26can crack your wood or possibly ruin your job.
16:28Which of these can you use on your screws to help prevent cracking your wood pieces?
16:33A, wax.
16:35B, wall anchors.
16:36C, finishing nails.
16:38D, none of the above.
16:40The answer and more coming up.
16:47Which of these can you use on your screws to help prevent cracking your wood pieces?
16:52The answer is A, wax.
16:55First, drill a pilot hole in your wood.
16:57Then, countersink the wood.
17:00Take the screw and roll it in liquefied wax until the threads are completely covered.
17:06The wax will lubricate the screw and the hole when it goes in smooth with no cracking.
17:23Hey, Margaret.
17:24Hey, Rick.
17:25Good to see you again.
17:25I can't wait to see the car.
17:27I don't know if you remember this or not.
17:29I'm having a restore for a friend of mine who's coming here under false pretenses.
17:33So this is a huge surprise for him.
17:35This is a huge surprise.
17:36Does he have any idea?
17:37I don't think he has a clue.
17:39It's awesome.
17:39I think that's him now.
17:41Yeah, there he is.
17:47Hi, Rick.
17:48How are you?
17:50Come on over here.
17:52Surprise.
17:54Hi, I'm Rick.
17:55Nice to meet you.
17:57How are you, Rick?
17:57Can I square the camera?
17:59You can.
18:02Well, you surprised me.
18:03You did a good job.
18:04What the...
18:08So I wanted to have something restored for you.
18:10Not only for you, but in honor of Jack.
18:13And I'm going to be as surprised as you are, because I have not seen the finished product.
18:16I feel like I'm back to third grade at Christmas time here.
18:20Good.
18:21That's good.
18:21That's what surprises are all about.
18:23Holy moly.
18:24Okay, bud.
18:25Let's go, Mark.
18:25Come on, I'll show you.
18:26One of the things I was concerned about is how Rick was going to take this patriotic theme
18:31and somehow mix in an Italian theme for Jack's son, Rick.
18:35So, I hope he got that right.
18:37All right.
18:38All right.
18:38Here we go.
18:42Wow.
18:43Hey, anyone looking for an ice cream cart?
18:46Holy moly.
18:49Wow.
18:50It doesn't even look like the same scooter.
18:56Wow.
18:57What do you think?
18:59Look at that.
19:01You captured everything I envisioned perfectly.
19:04If you look at the back of it.
19:05There's more.
19:06Oh.
19:07I'm Italian, too.
19:08So I wanted to throw a little Italian.
19:10Great.
19:11Perfect.
19:11And then you see where it's supposed to say delicious.
19:14You see what I said?
19:15Delicioso.
19:16Delicioso.
19:17Look at that.
19:19Big Americana, a little piece of Italian.
19:21A little Italian.
19:22Love it.
19:23Molto bene.
19:25When she brought it in, it was ugly as heck.
19:28It had wooden lids that looked like they were barely on, right?
19:31So we ended up making a brand new box.
19:33I put the right kind of lids on it.
19:35Everything's real old school, old style.
19:38It's got new tires on it.
19:39New bushings, new bearings, all that stuff's been redone.
19:42The gauges, the lights, the taillight work.
19:44We went and re-chromed everything.
19:46You could ride this thing anywhere.
19:48Because we went and restored the motor.
19:49It's absolutely incredible.
19:51Then on the paint job, Ted just did a great job on the design.
19:55Yeah.
19:55Stars and stripes and America and everything.
19:58It's kind of like America leading back to the roots of Italy.
20:01There you go.
20:02Love it.
20:02Of course, I put the five cents on there because that's how much ice cream was.
20:05It's just so beautifully painted.
20:07That's not a decal.
20:08No, it's all hand painted.
20:09Hand painted.
20:10All of this is hand painted.
20:12Yes.
20:12And then when he threw the delicioso on it, it was like, oh, that's it.
20:15My dad loves sweets, especially ice cream.
20:20And I'm not sure if you and Margaret knew, but that might have been his favorite ice cream bar.
20:24He loved the good old chocolate ice cream bar.
20:29That's awesome.
20:31It's just so weird that he's not here for the 50th, for the business that he loves so much and
20:36the friends that he loves so much.
20:37And he built and his son has taken over.
20:39I can appreciate it.
20:40I have a son, too.
20:41And you're making him proud.
20:43Believe me, he's up there looking down.
20:46I just felt so touched and really overwhelmed.
20:50And he would just smile knowing how blessed we are to have true friends who would do something this special
20:55for us.
20:57You bet.
20:57You bet.
20:58I know when my mom and brother and sister see this cart, it's going to be very emotional for them
21:03as it was for me today.
21:05That's as special as it gets.
21:08Let's have some ice cream, huh?
21:11Here, check it out.
21:14Here's your ice cream.
21:16No way, baby!
21:19Give it back.
21:20You didn't pay me yet.
21:22Where's your nickel?
21:23You can have it all, baby.
21:25You can have the whole thing now for that one.
21:28Thanks, Ricky.
21:29You bet.
