00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02What is this?
00:03It's actually an individual ride car from the original Tilt-A-Whirl ride.
00:08Good ride.
00:08Everybody started puking and started spraying over everybody around the ride.
00:12That is cool.
00:14It's a 66 Schwinn Fastback.
00:16You see here, the seat's missing.
00:17That banana seat, that's a big, important part.
00:20Yeah, they're very distinctive.
00:21This place is great.
00:23Trust me.
00:23This is the first time in a while that I've let somebody else take the lead.
00:26How much is it?
00:27Well, nothing's actually for sale here.
00:32I'm Rick Dale, and at my shop, we share a passion to give new life to pieces from the past.
00:44Every project has its challenges, but there's no job we can't handle.
00:50This is American Restoration.
00:57Tyler's got something going on.
00:58Hey!
01:01There you go.
01:02How are you?
01:03I'm Rick.
01:03I'm Tammy.
01:06So what is this?
01:08An individual ride car from the original Tilt-A-Whirl ride.
01:11You've probably seen them at carnivals.
01:13Yeah.
01:13It was invented in my hometown of Faribault, Minnesota, by a local guy, Herb Sellner, way back in 1926.
01:20Literally in his backyard and in his garage.
01:22It would spin around at the same time it was on sort of a swooping ramp.
01:28Yep.
01:28He had his son sit in a chair on top of the kitchen table, and then he would rock the
01:34kitchen table to find out what was going to happen.
01:37Then they've sold thousands of them all worldwide, too, right?
01:40Oh, absolutely.
01:40Yep.
01:40And what year do you think this one is?
01:42Probably from the early 50s.
01:44Gotcha.
01:45That makes sense.
01:46Before the 1940s, carnivals were pretty much burlesque and freak shows.
01:50But in the 1950s, rides like this actually made carnivals a bit more family friendly.
01:55To restore something from that time period would be pretty awesome.
01:58I own the bed and breakfast in Faribault.
02:01Oh, okay.
02:01And we've got a downtown association.
02:03We're raising some money to get this restored, to have it in our downtown.
02:07It's going to become a tourist attraction, if you will.
02:09People will sit in it, have a coffee.
02:11We kind of envision a little table here.
02:13For a second there, I thought you were going to want me to build the rest of the ride.
02:16This is just one car from the ride?
02:18Yeah.
02:19This is actually a custom job that they did for a specific carnival.
02:23When we have it restored, we would like it to be put back.
02:27So you want it stocked, like it came out of the factory?
02:29Yeah.
02:30I brought some graphics from the gal who used to work for Cellner Manufacturing in Faribault.
02:34Original graphics?
02:36And these are the original colors.
02:37Right.
02:37Red, white, and blue is the original colors.
02:39And then what's this?
02:40You're going to have to recreate the original bonnet or the hood.
02:44Is that a see-through shield?
02:46It's a mesh.
02:47It had this chicken wire piece that would go like this, you know, and then you'd sit inside of it
02:51so you'd be protected.
02:53Okay.
02:53And so they left a little bit of the mesh open here, and then the rest, I don't know if
02:58you're going to do it.
02:58It's solid.
02:59That could be the toughest part of the project.
03:02You're talking about doing upholstery, having a seat in here, something that would last the weather?
03:06Yes.
03:06And you see all this?
03:07This is like rust.
03:08Sure.
03:08From the lovely Minnesota weather and all the water and moisture.
03:12So it all has to be ground out and fixed.
03:14Otherwise, it'll keep doing it.
03:15Okay.
03:16So everything that you've talked about sounds great.
03:19Yeah.
03:20What are we thinking it's going to cost?
03:22We're going to $8,500 to do the whole project.
03:25Okay.
03:26Um, I know everybody in Faribault really wants this, so I think we should go for it.
03:33All right.
03:33Awesome.
03:34This is going to be really cool.
03:35You're going to love it.
03:42Rick!
03:44Yo, Rick!
03:45Mike!
03:46Big Mike is one of my regular customers.
03:49What you got?
03:49Yes, sir.
03:50And he's got this knack for tracking down rare and unusual pieces from all over the world.
03:54He's like a picker, a detective, and a historian all in one.
03:58You got it?
03:58Here.
03:58It's a 66 Schwinn Fastback.
04:01That is cool.
04:03I mean, Schwinn designed these things to look cool.
04:06I mean, the thing's awesome.
04:07They look fast when they're standing still.
04:09I mean, every kid wanted one.
04:10The reason why it's called a Stingray is because they were going for this hot rod theme.
04:15Well, they nailed this, man.
04:17Look at this thing.
04:17You know, it has the five-speed shifter.
04:19I mean, these things were slick.
04:20You wouldn't know it from this one, but this is actually one of the first bikes that had
04:24the banana seat.
04:25Oh, really?
04:25This is the beginning of, like, BMX, actually.
04:28Because when on the little seats, when you're sitting right here, you couldn't get off.
04:32But when the big banana seats are on there, your back here comes up really easy.
04:36Oh, yeah.
04:36So then all the kids started doing wheelies and stuff like that.
04:40Is this yours?
04:42No.
04:42It doesn't look like I could ride this thing.
04:44My business partner, he's turning 60 this year, so I was kind of hoping to get it fixed
04:48up for him so it was surprising.
04:49Because, I mean, he got this thing, like, when he was 12 years old in 66.
04:52So this is his original bike.
04:53It's his original bike.
04:54I mean, I tracked this thing down.
04:55I traced down the serial number to a Schwinn club.
04:58Oh, really?
04:58And they got it for me.
04:59Oh, my God.
05:00But, like I said, the seat's gone.
05:02That banana seat, that's a big, important part.
05:04Yeah, they're very distinctive.
05:06So you think this is worth saving?
05:07We can do this?
05:08Yeah, the hardest part is not putting reproduction parts in.
05:11Yeah, I want all original Schwinn.
05:12We're going to have to re-chrome all these pieces.
05:14Yeah.
05:14And then to also, you know, do the paint job on it, find the right color, find the seat,
05:19do the spokes.
05:20Hit me with it.
05:21Do the cables.
05:22Hit me with it.
05:22I'm looking at $4,200 to do the whole bike.
05:24Oh, $4,200?
05:27Yeah.
05:27I could buy a car for that.
05:30Yeah, you go ahead and laugh it up.
05:31Okay, all right, okay.
05:32I'll tell you what I'll do.
05:33You come in all the time, so I appreciate that, you know?
05:35I'm coming back if the price is right.
05:36I'll go to $38.
05:38That's as low as I can go.
05:40That's as low as you get up.
05:40$35, we got a deal.
05:41Come on.
05:42That's as low as I can go.
05:42$35.
05:43Kelly will have my left one if I go too much lower than that.
05:47$38 is it.
05:48Yeah.
05:52All right, let's do it.
05:53Okay.
05:54Oh, it'll be badass, Mike.
05:56The guy is going to be stoked.
05:57I hope he pees a little when he sees it.
06:00I've run a lot of projects to Rick over the years, and he's never let me down.
06:04But this one's going to be a challenge.
06:07Oh, Lord.
06:08We need some help there, Parker.
06:10If I break a nail on my toes...
06:12What if we restore this baby and ride it together across the streets of Las Vegas?
06:16Oh, hell no.
06:17That's not going to happen.
06:19Look at this.
06:19What is that?
06:21Oh, wow.
06:32These tilted worlds are cool.
06:33I mean, Carol used to work, like, at the carnivals.
06:35You used to work on rides, and...
06:37I've worked on these.
06:38Put them together, tore them down, everything.
06:40It's called a puker, because they puke everywhere.
06:43Spray it out with a hose.
06:45The next people get in the wet ride, and they're going, aw, somebody just puked in there.
06:49Right next to the chili dog stand, probably.
06:53You guys are making me sick.
06:55All right, so I want you guys to go ahead and tear it all apart.
06:58You know, take the brakes off.
06:59You know, get the thing taken apart as far as you possibly can.
07:02And then I need to go in and start to measure this out and figure out how I'm going to
07:06build
07:07this bonnet, which is basically the whole top half of this thing.
07:11You've got to be pretty tall, because when somebody steps up in here, you're going to bang their head on
07:15it.
07:15You don't want to hit your head.
07:16Right.
07:16Huge cover, huh?
07:17Big, huge.
07:18As soon as you're done, send it to Sandblast, okay?
07:20Once you get everything out.
07:21Don't have too much fun.
07:23Oh, crappy-ass wire.
07:26So when you operated this thing, you didn't have a carny voice going on?
07:29No.
07:31Come on, cowboy.
07:32Where's your carny voice?
07:34I ain't doing it, Kyle.
07:35I won't tell nobody.
07:37The ladies and gentlemen, step up, step in.
07:42Let me take it for real.
07:43Wild, wild spin.
07:46Wait until the boys hear about this.
07:48You'd be a dead man, Kyle.
07:55We got this awesome Schwinn bike in from Big Mike, but he wants all original parts.
08:00We're good on most of it, but the banana seat is key.
08:03So while the boys tear it down, I sent Ron and Leonard out on the hunt.
08:07I'm hoping they can find us the key part.
08:09This doesn't look like a bike shop, Leonard.
08:10This place is great.
08:12Trust me.
08:13Trust me.
08:14This is the first time in a while that I let somebody else take the lead, trying to find some
08:18parts,
08:18and this Schwinn bike is missing its banana seat.
08:20It's going to be very, very hard to try to find one.
08:22What can I say?
08:23My Leonard senses are tingling.
08:26Hi.
08:26Hey, guys.
08:27What are you guys looking for?
08:28A seat for a 1960s Stingray.
08:31I keep all the parts in the back.
08:33If you're going to find it, it'd be back there.
08:35Cool.
08:35All right.
08:35Let's check it out.
08:36All right.
08:37Let's go.
08:38Check it out.
08:39Check it out.
08:40A beautiful batch of broken bikes.
08:42A little bike boneyard for us to explore.
08:44There's lots of rims, lots of tires.
08:46Look at that over there.
08:47There's a banana seat.
08:50Here we go.
08:51Oh, Lord.
08:53Oh, Lord.
08:54You need some help there, partner?
08:56This is why I bring Ron along.
08:59I'm the brain.
09:00He's the muscle.
09:02If I break a nail on my toes...
09:04But sometimes my muscle winds like a bitch.
09:10Okay.
09:10Now, you're right.
09:11Yes, it is a banana seat.
09:12Mm-hmm.
09:13But is it a Schwinn Stingray?
09:15It's a start.
09:16We just have to dig deeper.
09:17It's a two-seater.
09:19What if we restore this baby and ride it together across the streets of Las Vegas?
09:23Oh, hell no.
09:24That's not going to happen.
09:25Nothing's really even close.
09:27I don't even know if these are right here.
09:28None of those.
09:30All right.
09:31Wait.
09:34Hello, hello?
09:36Check it out.
09:37Schwinn!
09:40Well, you were right.
09:42Friggin' Schwinn Stingray.
09:43Booyah!
09:44It's pretty beat up, so it should come cheap.
09:46Go find Dave so we can talk about buying.
09:48Okay.
09:49Dave!
09:50Dave!
09:51I should have got Dave.
09:52Well, well, well.
09:53Little Leonard's all going up.
09:54It looks like I was right to trust him on this one.
09:58How'd you guys do?
09:59I think we did good.
10:00We did all right.
10:01So how much is it?
10:01How much you need?
10:02Well, nothing's actually for sale here.
10:05We're a bicycle co-op, so everybody trades either their time or parts.
10:10Problem is, I don't think there's anything in our shop that we could actually trade for you.
10:14Maybe someone could teach a class on how to build bikes.
10:18That's a great idea, but neither one of us are able to teach a class at all.
10:22Well, I actually happen to have three rusted-up bikes in my garage that are in functioning condition.
10:29I don't really use some of those.
10:32That sounds good.
10:33We could definitely put those to good use.
10:35So do you have a deal?
10:36Yeah, we have a deal.
10:36Yeah!
10:37I'm good with that.
10:38Right on.
10:39Thanks a lot.
10:39Ron, I just made the deal.
10:41I think I'm learning.
10:42You guys are good.
10:42I'll show you out.
10:43Yes, please.
10:43Okay, great.
10:44This place is so awesome.
10:45I love it.
10:54I'll grab the steel.
10:56You just sort of guide me into the break.
10:58Tyler and I are working on the tilt-a-whirl bonnet, and it's going to be a pain in the
11:02ass because
11:03we have to make it completely from scratch.
11:05One, two, three.
11:07I got the heavy head.
11:08Thanks.
11:12All right, you ready?
11:13Hey, guys.
11:13Hey.
11:14Hey.
11:14You guys are making a lot of noise back here.
11:16I was just trying to get this thing done.
11:18What's up?
11:19Well, something just came in.
11:21I want to show it to you.
11:22I really need to get this done.
11:23Can that wait?
11:23No, come on.
11:24Just leave it there.
11:25Come with me.
11:26I have a surprise for you.
11:30You're going to be so thrilled I pulled you away from that job you're doing.
11:34Look at this.
11:35What is that?
11:37No way.
11:43Don't be in such a bad mood.
11:45I've got to get some stuff done, man.
11:47So I'm in the middle of making the Tilted World bonnet, and now she's pulling me away
11:51because she's got something to show me.
11:53Oh, my gosh.
11:54You're going to eat your words.
11:56Look at this.
11:57What is that?
11:58This just came in.
11:59This is the bonnet.
12:02For the Tilted World?
12:03Yeah.
12:04Did it just come from the customer?
12:05Yeah.
12:06Tammy sent a note saying that it was going to live by an intersection.
12:09Wow.
12:09So for safety, cars need to see through it.
12:12Yeah, that's saving me about 30 hours of work.
12:14Actually, if it fits.
12:15Say it.
12:16I couldn't run this place without you.
12:19Damn straight.
12:21I need you to go get Cowboy in the Tilted World.
12:23Okay.
12:24Thanks, babe.
12:24That was great news.
12:26Cowboy!
12:30Is this so you didn't fly out?
12:32I can't even remember riding one of these.
12:33Cowboy's the expert.
12:34Is that what it's supposed to look like?
12:37Originally, it's possible.
12:39All right.
12:39All right, so...
12:41What are these hooks for?
12:43I don't know.
12:43I see those.
12:44And then you lined up with another clip right here that came over it.
12:48And then you put on your seat, and then you put on your hair bonnet.
12:51Because the hair would be stuck all in that.
12:53Rip all them girls' hairs out.
12:55Why did it originally come solid?
12:57They started making these solid because everybody started puking.
13:00It started spraying over everybody around the ride.
13:02This is so disgusting.
13:06It's nasty.
13:07It's a good ride.
13:08Well, sit in it.
13:09Let me see your head height.
13:10Just pretend like there's a two-inch pad.
13:12Oh, you got plenty of it.
13:13This is really great.
13:14The bonnet looks the right size.
13:16And better yet, I don't have to make it myself.
13:18But there's still a lot of work to do.
13:20We still got to figure out what kind of hooks we got to put in here.
13:23I still got to make some kind of a table.
13:25I got to figure out the upholstery, how we're going to put the upholstery in, and still hook
13:28it up.
13:29Tyler, go ahead and get this thing sent off the sandblast, and then we'll get it painted.
13:39Do you see him?
13:40I don't see him.
13:42Rick!
13:43Yeah?
13:43Where are you at?
13:45Over here.
13:46Over here.
13:46He pops up like a groundhog.
13:47I got someone I want you to meet.
13:49It's my business partner, Mitch.
13:51Oh, hey, Mitch.
13:52Good to meet you.
13:53It's his 60th birthday, and we're out partying, you know?
13:55Vegas style.
13:56You know, you got to go big or go home.
13:57Congrats.
13:58Mike was telling me about you.
13:59I just hope we timed it out right, and the surprise is ready.
14:02Yeah, it is.
14:03It's perfect.
14:03He landed it just right.
14:05He has no clue about the surprise?
14:06No, he has no clue.
14:08This is going to blow you away.
14:10Here we go.
14:11Hey, Ty, we're ready.
14:12Come on.
14:15Holy moly.
14:18That's a Swin Fastback five-speed.
14:21Yeah.
14:21Do you recognize that?
14:22Man.
14:24I had one of these when I was little.
14:26Oh, my God.
14:32What Mike did was he actually hunted down the exact same bike that you had as a kid.
14:39This is the one.
14:40This is actually the serial number.
14:42This is what makes this bike actually yours.
14:44That's how I tracked it down.
14:46I entered it into a computer database of Swin collectors.
14:49Yeah.
14:49And the Swin collectors helped me.
14:51They tracked the darn thing down to Columbus, Ohio.
14:54I mean, this is your bike.
14:55That blows me away.
14:56I don't know what to say.
14:58I'm lost to words or something.
15:00It reminds me of my younger days, and my mom and dad were living, and we had a good time.
15:05My brother just brings back old memories.
15:09He never forgot this bike.
15:11I've been hearing stories like this for the last 15 years about this bike.
15:15It looks brand new.
15:16Yeah.
15:16This is a very unique bike.
15:18I mean, so when Mike brought this in, it was falling apart.
15:21The handlebars, we chromed those.
15:23We actually found the OEM grips on it, the matching color.
15:27These are actually the original brake mechanisms on there.
15:30They put the skinny front tire on it, sort of like, you know, like a hot rod would have on
15:34the front of a wheelie car.
15:35And on the stick shift itself, it's all the original.
15:37We chromed it and everything.
15:38You guys got it perfect.
15:39The paint itself, we ended up matching the color exactly the way it was.
15:44Is that the color it was?
15:45Yeah.
15:46It's the original color.
15:47On the seat itself, when Mike brought it to me, it was totally missing.
15:51To be able to find this is really, really hard.
15:53So this is a nice, original seat that we reupholstered just like the original.
15:58I'm seeing the way you're sort of drooling on this thing.
16:00I want you to get on it and throw those memories through your head as you ride.
16:04Get on there, man.
16:05Drive it.
16:05Let her rip.
16:06Come on.
16:08No wheelies.
16:09Yeah.
16:10Don't skin your knee.
16:12Believe me, I know how to ride a bike.
16:13How's it ride?
16:15Like a Cadillac.
16:16Better than a Lexus.
16:18I don't feel like I'm 60 years old.
16:20I feel like I'm 12 years old all over again.
16:23Man, this is great.
16:25Rise like the old bike.
16:27How about the stick shift?
16:28You're going to shift that thing into high gear?
16:29Oh, yeah.
16:30How fast does it go?
16:31Fast.
16:32Woo!
16:34Rick, you did a hell of a job.
16:35Thank you very much.
16:37Thank you, Mitch.
16:38Hey, you got a bike big enough I can ride?
16:39Yeah.
16:40I guarantee I got a bike big enough.
16:42It's out front.
16:43It's got a motor on.
16:44Oh, I'll take that one.
16:47Come on, purple boy.
16:48Come on.
16:48Come on.
16:49Come on.
16:50Oh, there we go.
16:51That's what I like.
16:53I'm going to need a beer after this.
17:15All right, Tammy, you ready to see this?
17:17Absolutely.
17:17I'm so excited.
17:18I can't wait.
17:19Hey, Rick.
17:20Yeah.
17:21Tammy's here for the children world.
17:23Awesome.
17:24Good to see you.
17:25Very good to see you.
17:26How's it going?
17:27Very good.
17:27Very good.
17:27Are you excited to see this?
17:29I can't tell you how excited I am.
17:30Yeah, there's a lot of pressure on us.
17:32I mean, this was for the whole town.
17:33It is.
17:34We're all so excited.
17:35Everybody in the town is just like, ah!
17:37Yeah.
17:37I can't wait to show it to you.
17:39I mean, it came out incredible.
17:40A little different than you saw before.
17:41Oh, I hope so.
17:42Yeah, yeah.
17:43All right, so it's over here.
17:44Come on.
17:44Okay.
17:44All right.
17:45This project is so important to the whole community of Faribault, Minnesota.
17:48So I'm really hoping Rick is on his game, because when I see it, it's just going to have to
17:52be spot on.
17:53Here we go.
17:54You ready?
17:54I'm ready.
17:55One, two, three.
17:58Check it out.
18:03Oh, my gosh.
18:05Oh, you did great.
18:06Look at it.
18:07Oh, it's beautiful.
18:10Absolutely beautiful.
18:11You did great.
18:13Great.
18:13Great.
18:15And this bonnet, I was working on one, building one out of solid steel.
18:19And then when it came in, you know, it was a big surprise.
18:21It was like, wow, this is going to save me a ton of work.
18:24I found it about the old plant, and this was actually on an original car that was made
18:28of wood.
18:29The bonnet had its dings and dents in it.
18:31Oh, yeah.
18:31We straightened all those.
18:33Sandblasted it, powder coated it and everything.
18:35Having the original bonnet is just, it's perfect.
18:38If you remember, there was a lot of holes, right?
18:40Yes, a lot of holes.
18:41And there was a lot of rust.
18:42So what we did was we welded all of that up and then seamed it.
18:45So now all the welds are nice and clean.
18:47It's gorgeous.
18:48I mean, the way it gleams and shines.
18:50The colors, I think, are spot on.
18:52It's perfect.
18:53It's just what it was.
18:54You've got to look at the art on the back.
18:55Children love this clown.
18:58That's not what I've heard.
18:59They run.
19:00They're scared.
19:00They cry.
19:01Look at that!
19:03This is all the way it was back in the day.
19:05Is there original graphics?
19:06I like these.
19:07This is beautiful.
19:08There was a tilt roll down here.
19:10And what I really like is it says right on here, Faribault, Minnesota.
19:13It's perfect.
19:14Ted actually took your original graphics and made these decals.
19:18I mean, it was painstaking work, but it turned out great.
19:21You want to make sure that you clear everything really well.
19:24You know, probably four coats clear on this.
19:26So it doesn't hurt anything to sand it, buff it, and clean it off if somebody makes a mark
19:29on it.
19:30Great.
19:31It is perfect.
19:32One of the other things we did, we made the table adjustable where you can pull it in
19:36and out.
19:37Oh, look at that!
19:38Very cool!
19:38So, you know, if you get the kids running in and everybody wants to jump in at the same
19:42time, there's room for everybody to get back.
19:44You know, it's more spacious.
19:45Well, absolutely.
19:45Look at the legs on this girl.
19:46I mean, you know, it's a lot for me to get in it.
19:48Yeah.
19:49Come on, Purple Boy.
19:50Come on.
19:50Come on.
19:51Sit down.
19:51Purple Boy.
19:52Come on.
19:53Purple Boy.
19:53Come on.
19:54We'll pretend we're watching a Vikings game.
19:56Here we go.
19:57Come on.
19:57There we go.
19:58Oh, there we go.
19:59That's what I like.
20:01You guys are ready for the ride?
20:03I need my lap bar to hold me in here.
20:04Hold you in so you don't get away from me?
20:08I'm going to need a beer after this.
20:10I'm buying.
20:12Wow.
20:13This project was over the top.
20:15It couldn't be any better.
20:16It's just absolutely gorgeous with the sun today.
20:18It's gleaming off of it.
20:19It's perfect.
20:21Oh, you bet.
20:21You bet.
20:22It's a pleasure.
20:23Come on inside.
20:24I want to get you all the extra parts.
20:26There were some breaks and stuff.
20:27Just so you never know.
20:27You might need them.
20:28Come on in.
20:28Got another one that we'd like to restore.
20:31Maybe you could send Cowboy my way.
20:32He could do it in Minnesota.
20:33Finally get up north.
20:34Too cold.
20:35Such a big old teddy bear.
20:36Yes.
