00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02This mobile Pegasus iron is the kind that used to sit on a pole and would rotate.
00:08We need to take it apart.
00:10This thing is not budging.
00:11We're not going to be able to split it open without destroying it really, really bad.
00:16There's not one inch of this place that isn't covered in cool stuff.
00:20Whoa! You see that?
00:21I do see that.
00:22Guys, what are you looking at?
00:24We're looking at this pole.
00:25Okay, imagine if we used this, this motor and this pole to, like, build, like, a giant robot.
00:35I'm Rick Dale.
00:37And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:40To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:47Every project has its challenges.
00:49But there's no job we can't handle.
00:54This is American Restoration.
01:02This business is full of non-stop surprises.
01:06Woo!
01:08Where most people see rusted out pieces of junk,
01:11I see the opportunity to bring back beautiful pieces of history that are one of a kind.
01:16Oh, my God.
01:17Get that load.
01:18And you never know what each day has in store for you.
01:21Okay.
01:22Get that load!
01:24Holy...
01:25What's a cowboy yelling about?
01:26I don't know.
01:27Got something for you.
01:30Wow, that's cool.
01:32How you doing?
01:32Robert.
01:33Good to meet you.
01:34I found a sign on wine.
01:36I've been searching for a long time to try to find one of these.
01:38The full-size mobile Pegasus that used to rotate on the pole.
01:41They're very unique and hard to find, especially one that's this large.
01:46This is awesome.
01:47This is a rare one.
01:48Oh, it's neon, too, right?
01:50Well, as best I can tell, it used to have neon.
01:52There's some holes in the sign where the neon would have come through.
01:55I've never seen neon on this sign before, but I can't wait to see it with neon.
01:59I'm hoping that's something you can do for me.
02:01Do you mind lifting it up?
02:02No.
02:03You really don't see these old Pegasus signs anymore, and to see one this big is real rare.
02:08So it'll definitely be a unique piece to work on.
02:12Where'd you get it?
02:13Well, I found the sign on wine.
02:15I collect these old signs, and I've got them all over my property at my home.
02:18And you're going to put it in your yard?
02:19Yeah.
02:20That's awesome.
02:20I've got about 20 other signs out there right now.
02:23I've got them all lit up at night.
02:24Some are really old.
02:25I've got Gulf and Texaco and Mobile, Sinclair, and many, many more.
02:30Does your wife like it?
02:31Yeah, at first she was a little worried about it when I started putting them up on poles.
02:34Yeah.
02:37You know, Mobile picked up this logo in like 1911 from a company called Magnolia, which is an oil company.
02:44And when they ended up buying out that company, they took on this logo.
02:48They would call it the Flying Red Horse, but what it was, it was actually a Pegasus.
02:52And in Greek mythology, it actually meant speed, strength, and inspiration.
02:58So you want to restore it, you want to put neon on it.
03:00And I want it up on a pole, preferably one that'll rotate.
03:04I mean, it looks like it's going to be a really, really tough job.
03:07All the sheet metal on here, a lot of it's all pressed.
03:09See all this work that they did to bend all that?
03:11Oh, yeah.
03:12Stuff like this where it's all rusted right in here, and you can see the bottom's totally blown out.
03:17I mean, we're going to have to fix all this.
03:18This is junk.
03:19And then on the bottom, this is an inspection panel, but it looks like the support's gone.
03:24There's nothing inside this to be able to hold it in the air, the structurally.
03:28Okay.
03:29I mean, it has to have some kind of support, because as soon as it bends in the wind, it'll
03:33snap that neon.
03:34It's over.
03:35But the problem I'm going to have is getting up in there and welding inside there.
03:39So to get the thing totally right, it's going to be quite a bit of work.
03:42A pole that's going to support that kind of weight and make it spin, it's not like I'm going to
03:46walk down to the hardware store and find this thing.
03:48And if this business has taught me anything, there'll probably be a few more bumps in the road.
03:52To get the whole thing done, do all the body work, get all the art done, put all the neon
03:57on there, and making it spin,
04:00I'm looking at probably $11,000.
04:02Okay.
04:04$11,000.
04:06Well, I'll tell you, Rick, as much as I've been wanting this sign, as long as I've been wanting this
04:10sign,
04:13if you can get it to work, I say we do it.
04:15All right. Awesome, awesome.
04:16I'm going to make this the baddest thing you've ever seen.
04:18It's going to light up your whole yard. Trust me.
04:20That's a lot of money.
04:21And so for $11,000, he better get it right.
04:28Come on, Rick.
04:29Hey, Kyle. A customer wants us to restore the design.
04:32The biggest problem is that we need to take it apart, right?
04:35We need to open it up to where we can do the body work on both sides of these flat
04:40panels
04:40and then put it back together.
04:43So let's get it on that table and just start playing with it.
04:46We'll see what we can do.
04:47Okay.
04:48The metal on this sign is super thin,
04:50so we'll need to reinforce the interior in order for it to stand safely on a pole.
04:55But to do that, we've got to get inside.
04:58Why don't we just take all these outside screws off?
05:00And see what happens?
05:01Maybe I'll flex it enough to get it off of this ridge.
05:03All right.
05:07And I'm taking these off and nothing's happening.
05:09So let's cut these off.
05:15Wow, this thing is really stuck together.
05:17That's the old transformer for the neon that they had running in there.
05:23This thing is not budging.
05:27I had a feeling that this sign wasn't going to magically pop open.
05:30And I know from experience, when you're dealing with metal this stubborn and rusty,
05:35it's time to start playing with fire.
05:37I'm going to torch it.
05:38Yep.
05:42Oh, that's solder.
05:43See it peeling out?
05:44It's coming out.
05:45That's solder.
05:47As we're heating it, we're finding out that the entire sign is actually soldered together.
05:53That's bad.
05:53That means that every bit of that has to come apart with heat.
05:57Don't bend it too much.
05:58But as soon as we put the heat on it, it'll warp all the metal.
06:02And we might as well just build a brand new sign.
06:05So this is what I want to do.
06:07If we have to cut a panel out like this and get underneath there, we will.
06:12And then we'll do all the body work from the outside.
06:15So let's go ahead and clean it up and get it stripped.
06:18Okay?
06:19Doing the body work from the outside is going to slow us down big time.
06:23I just hope Ron and Tyler are having better luck finding this pull than I'm having here with this sign.
06:31I bet we can find the pull here.
06:33This place has more pulls than the strip club.
06:36Well played, sir.
06:38What do you think?
06:38Something like that?
06:40It's like that, but we got to have one that spins.
06:42This is just stationary.
06:44That's right.
06:44It's got a motor in the bottom of it.
06:45Yeah, to make the horse spin.
06:47Let's check out the hanger.
06:48That's where all the cool stuff is.
06:50To the hanger.
06:54Wow.
06:58There's not one inch of this place that isn't covered in cool stuff.
07:03Oh, yeah.
07:04There we go.
07:05What's up, ladies?
07:06Is this like the man cave of all man caves?
07:08Definitely.
07:09He has signs from everywhere.
07:11I mean, he's got Chevron, Flying A.
07:13You know, I don't really like to say this, but I'm kind of jealous of this dude and his collections.
07:17Oh, my God.
07:18But I'm not seeing any pulls anywhere, dude.
07:20I wonder if he's gearing up for the zombie apocalypse.
07:23Shoot something.
07:26I'll give you $10.
07:27You can ride that.
07:28Dude, it's flat.
07:29Oh, hey, look at that.
07:32Dude, that's freaking big ass Pegasus, man.
07:35That's a Pegasus horse.
07:36I mean, I don't think it gets any closer than that.
07:39I'm thinking if he has the sign, he must have the pull.
07:42Yeah.
07:48Dude, nothing.
07:49No.
07:50It's like storage up here.
07:52It is. It's total storage.
07:53That sucks.
07:55I don't know what to tell you, dude.
07:57All right, well, we'll just try the next spot, all right?
07:59No worries.
07:59You can go try the next spot, but I got way too much stuff to do.
08:02Well, that just sucks.
08:05This motor is spinning way too fast.
08:07It's just literally going to tear the sign apart.
08:09If we can't fix this motor, the project is dead in the water.
08:13You got more cool stuff back there?
08:15I'm always looking for new pickers, so we'll see what this guy knows.
08:18This is a super soaker slash fire extinguisher slash weapon of war.
08:23This is weird.
08:31Time to strip it and rip it, baby.
08:38Wow, looking good.
08:39How's it going, Pat?
08:40Good, good.
08:42We're about to send this 1950s mini chipmunk tractor back to its rightful owner.
08:47I just need to get eyes on it before we can ship it out.
08:51Have you ever seen one of these?
08:52No.
08:52I mean, is this a kid's toy or what is this thing?
08:54Well, back in the day, this was actually a piece of lawn equipment that was used to do all kinds
08:59of things.
08:59It was tilling, mowing, and a full-size man could sit on that.
09:04It came out really, really nice.
09:05Did you see it when it was started?
09:07Oh, that was pretty bad?
09:08Oh, it was rough.
09:09It was really, really distraught.
09:11You know, it was rusted out.
09:11The motor didn't run.
09:12The wheels were all broke off of it.
09:14But now it looks amazing.
09:17This one's cool.
09:18Yeah, see that motor?
09:20Nowadays, they don't have anything like this.
09:21Yeah.
09:21You can sort of see, you know, everything about it looks old.
09:24The old gas can looks like a little torpedo.
09:26This is just the old rope pull.
09:28Oh, yeah.
09:29Black and red, too.
09:30It looks good together.
09:31Ted ended up doing the chipmunk on the side.
09:33He could barely see the logo on there, so he copied the art, and then he put this new decal
09:38on here.
09:39He also did all this grill work and painting on the front where you could see the white like that
09:43and then the chipmunk running down.
09:46Are we going to fire this thing up or what?
09:48See how she runs.
09:49Yeah.
09:50You want to do the honors?
09:52I'd rather let you.
09:53Okay, here we go.
09:54You ready?
09:54Yes, sir.
09:55Here we go.
09:57And it starts with just one pull.
09:59I mean, that's awesome.
10:04All right, so what I need you to do right now is finish wiping it down, and then go ahead
10:08and roll it in, and we'll get this thing shipped out.
10:22You've got to find that pull, man.
10:23The Pegasus sign's already going through body work.
10:26Dude, Veronica's got some crazy stuff.
10:28Let's just hope she's got a pull.
10:32Hey, guys.
10:33Veronica, how you doing?
10:34Good.
10:35What you looking for today?
10:35Well, what we need is basically a pull for a big mobile Pegasus sign that we're restoring.
10:40You know the drill.
10:41Just go through and help yourself and holler when you're ready.
10:44Thanks, Larry.
10:44I appreciate it.
10:45Let's go digging.
10:46All right, pull.
10:47Here's a pull.
10:48Well, that ain't going to work.
10:50This place is pretty crazy, huh?
10:51Yeah, it is.
10:52Look at these guys.
10:53Put them on the roof at the shop.
10:56This is pretty sweet right here, dude.
10:59You like that, man?
10:59Dude, they're showing full nudity.
11:01Where?
11:01Right here.
11:04Ron.
11:05Yeah?
11:06Look at this.
11:07Holy crap.
11:10That's not bad.
11:11That's solid.
11:12You hear that?
11:12That's not bad.
11:14I think that's it.
11:18I mean, look.
11:19It's got something down here.
11:19It's like a motor or something.
11:21It says master motor.
11:23No way.
11:23Yeah.
11:24Hey, check this out right here.
11:27No way.
11:28Dude, it definitely spins.
11:29It does, huh?
11:30Yeah, it's a little seized up, it feels like,
11:32but it definitely has a motor on it.
11:34Yeah.
11:34Hey, guys.
11:35We could probably take it apart and get it going.
11:36What are you looking at?
11:37Oh.
11:38Hey.
11:39We're looking at this pole that we're looking for.
11:42Nice.
11:42Why, do you work here?
11:44Nope.
11:49I've never seen a gear motor that big.
11:51Although, did you know that the biggest gear motor in history
11:54is 23 feet in diameter?
11:55I mean, my friend has a bunch, but they're small.
11:58He uses them to build robots.
11:59You guys like robots?
12:00Yeah, robots.
12:01Imagine if we used this, this motor and this pole
12:04to, like, build, like, a giant robot.
12:09All right.
12:10Later, guys.
12:11If you need any advice, I'm your man.
12:14I'm your go-to guy.
12:15I have no idea who that guy is or what his deal is,
12:19but I think we might have found our pole.
12:21God, I forgot I even had it.
12:22You had to dig through a lot to find that.
12:25Um, it's got a motor in it, though.
12:27Do you know anything about it, where it came from?
12:29I have no idea.
12:30I just buy weird stuff.
12:32Just buy weird stuff.
12:33If it's heavy, I'll buy it.
12:35I guess the next question is how much you want for it.
12:38I'm thinking, like, $1,200.
12:39Whoa!
12:40Wow, $1,200.
12:42If you say it real fast, it doesn't sound so bad.
12:45$200.
12:45Yeah, you're right.
12:46It still sounds a little high to me.
12:49I can probably give you $6 for it.
12:50No, I don't want to sell it for $6.
12:53I can scrap it for almost that.
12:54It weighs a ton.
12:56I mean, come closer to $12,
12:57and then I'll negotiate with you a little bit.
13:02How about $8?
13:03How about $9?
13:05Cash.
13:07It's still a $900 gamble, but...
13:10It's Vegas, baby.
13:15Okay.
13:16All right, deal.
13:17Here, sweetheart.
13:18Thank you very much.
13:19Good one, sweetheart.
13:20Good one, sweetheart.
13:31Dude, Ron, are you kidding me?
13:33What?
13:34Look who it is.
13:35Is that that guy?
13:36No way.
13:38Yeah way, dude.
13:39Look it, here he is.
13:40Hey, hey, hey.
13:41Hey, bud.
13:42Guys.
13:43Wow, this guy either really loves poles,
13:45or he's just a stalker.
13:46I'm really not sure which.
13:48He found us.
13:49I'm glad I tracked you down.
13:50What's up here, man?
13:51What's up?
13:52Thank God for that sign.
13:53You were pretty easy to find.
13:55Our address is on there.
13:58This particular pole came from a Union 76 gas station.
14:03I know, dude.
14:04Why are you following us around town?
14:05This is about seeing projects to completion.
14:08Guys, listen.
14:09Get in your car, cruise on off, and call later.
14:11What's going on?
14:12We got a pole for the Pegasus.
14:14There it is.
14:14It rotates, and you take one of those red Union 76 balls,
14:18attach it to the top, and it's going to be great.
14:20Well, I'm Leonard.
14:21Pleasure to meet you.
14:22Ron.
14:23I'd like to say the same thing.
14:24Hey, hey, hey.
14:25Bradley.
14:25Hey, Bradley.
14:26I like that.
14:26All right.
14:29All right.
14:29You okay?
14:30We're at the antique place, and all of a sudden,
14:32he goes on about poles and robots, and God knows what.
14:35But then I figured out what this pole was all about.
14:38Wait a minute.
14:38I just want to know, how do you know about this stuff?
14:41Oh, you know, I like to do a little picking in my free time.
14:44That's cool.
14:44So you actually pick?
14:45I don't think of myself as a picker.
14:47I think of myself as a hunter for a rare and valuable treasure.
14:50I mean, you know.
14:52You got more cool stuff back there?
14:54We got a little bit of stuff back there.
14:55Oh, that is so awesome.
14:57Can I take a look?
14:58Yeah, sure.
14:59Figure it out.
15:00I'm going to take you into the boneyard, and I'm going to show you around.
15:02Come on back here, Leonard.
15:03You've got to be kidding me.
15:04By the way, guys, nice work on the pole.
15:07Oh, this is so cool.
15:08This is the kind of stuff that we pick and we buy.
15:10This place is like a wonderland.
15:12Look, look.
15:13You got one of these.
15:14Oh, well, what do you know about?
15:16Okay, so this is an old fire extinguisher from the 1920s.
15:20You had to pump them by hand like a super soaker.
15:24It used carbon tetrachloride.
15:26That stuff will kill you.
15:27As it turns out, when this thing gets hot, it turns into phosgene gas, which was actually
15:33a weapon in World War I.
15:35So this is a super soaker slash fire extinguisher slash weapon of war.
15:41That's good.
15:43When you know what the object is all about, I mean, really, really know.
15:47You can appreciate it that much more.
15:50Oh, and look at this beauty over here.
15:53This is an ironic combination of double cola box placed below this Pepsi ice chest.
16:00Because, you know, in the 30s, double cola was like number one.
16:03And they was considering buying Pepsi cola.
16:06And they turned him down and they said, no, we're going to do our own things.
16:10Well, look at this.
16:10Look at this.
16:11It's nothing but Pepsi machines all around.
16:13The one double cola beep right here.
16:15And Pepsi is on top.
16:17That, I think, is just hilarious.
16:21This is weird.
16:24But I think your enthusiasm and your love for this kind of stuff is sort of like what I feel.
16:30Next time you guys are picking, if you have any questions about the history of this stuff,
16:34day or night, you can call me.
16:36Okay, I can always use another picker.
16:38What the hell are you talking about?
16:40You have a picker.
16:40I'm your picker right here.
16:41I think you two need to go out on a picker trip.
16:44Let's do it.
16:45Oh, we can have so much fun.
16:45You've got to be kidding me.
16:46I could learn so much from you.
16:48And I'll share with you some stuff you may not know.
16:51I'm really excited that Rick wants me to go out on picks.
16:55And I think I'm going to win run over with my knowledge and my charm.
17:00Get used to it.
17:01Ron.
17:01I'll show you out.
17:02Come on, I'll show you out.
17:03Ron, we're going to have so much fun.
17:05You've got to stop the touching, too.
17:18Kyle.
17:19What's up?
17:20I got the motor for the Pegasus pole.
17:22It's been painted, rebuilt.
17:24It's ready to go.
17:24Okay.
17:25I think we need to test it first, though.
17:27Test it?
17:28Well, we don't know how fast this motor turns, right?
17:31I don't.
17:32Because if this thing spins real fast, the Pegasus will be flying.
17:35Yeah, and it's got to have a slow turn.
17:37Okay.
17:37Probably like a minute or something.
17:39Let's plug it in.
17:43Let's go in about one full rotation every 10 seconds.
17:46That's way too fast.
17:48Right.
17:48That sucks, because my dad thought we were all set with this,
17:50so we were just going to be able to put the motor in and go.
17:52So, all right, let me go get him and tell him.
17:54I'll be right back.
17:54The customer will be here in just a few hours to pick up this Pegasus sign,
17:58so we don't have much time to deal with this motor problem.
18:08We just ran into a big roadblock with the Pegasus sign,
18:11so I hope my dad can find a quick solution,
18:13or we're totally screwed.
18:15Check it out.
18:17This is a real problem.
18:20This large gear fits directly on the pull,
18:23and then the small gear goes on the motor,
18:25so the speed it's spinning right now
18:27is actually going to spin this even faster,
18:30which means the pull is going to be spinning too fast.
18:33Right.
18:33Right?
18:34Way too fast, because the Pegasus is very heavy.
18:38It's just literally going to tear the sign apart.
18:40It has to spin as slow as possible.
18:42Okay.
18:43Got it?
18:43Yeah.
18:44So, there's 24 teeth on here.
18:46So, if you went down to 10 or 12 teeth on the gear,
18:51then this would not spin as fast.
18:54So, let's go ahead and find one of these somewhere
18:56and just get one half the size.
18:58And I don't know where the heck we're going to find one of these,
19:00but we need to find one now, because the customer's coming.
19:03I don't want his Pegasus on the ground when he gets here.
19:07You got any ideas?
19:16Where is that thing?
19:17If I don't find it soon, we're in trouble.
19:24Jackpot.
19:32Hey, Robert.
19:34Hey, Rick.
19:35How you doing?
19:35Good.
19:35How are you doing?
19:36Awesome.
19:37How's it been?
19:37How's it been?
19:38I'm going good.
19:39I can't wait to see this sign.
19:40Okay.
19:40So, just come over here on this side.
19:42I don't want you to see it.
19:43Just keep your head down.
19:44Okay.
19:45Don't look.
19:46All right.
19:46So, I want you to remember what it looked like.
19:49All right?
19:49I can remember the thing was pretty beat up.
19:51Of course, the paint was all messed up on it, and then no neon.
19:55So, you got that in your head?
19:56I got it in my head.
19:57You bet.
19:58Okay.
20:00You ready?
20:01I'm ready.
20:02One, two, three.
20:04Turn around.
20:05Oh, beautiful.
20:08Oh, that's excellent.
20:10Oh, I love it, Rick.
20:11The pole, perfect for that sign.
20:13I don't believe it.
20:15Compared to what that was before, Rick, that was just incredible.
20:18Yeah.
20:18It really has come a long way.
20:21Well, so what did you do?
20:23You know, you remember all the trim on the edges?
20:26We started to try to take it off with a torch.
20:30I wanted to split it so that I could get to the back and do body work.
20:33It don't come apart.
20:35So, we had to use all the original access panels, get inside, and pound every one of the dents.
20:40We've got about 40 hours in body work alone beating that thing out.
20:45Remember it had a bunch of decayed out rust spots?
20:47Oh, yeah.
20:48In fact, I don't even remember where they were at now.
20:50Yeah.
20:51That's incredible.
20:54I was just amazed at what it looked like.
20:56It's a lot better than I thought it was going to be.
20:57A lot more neon than I ever thought was going to be on there.
21:00I've got lots of signs, but this is by far the most beautiful one I've ever had.
21:05Okay, well, let's wait inside while the sun goes down, and we'll finish up the paperwork.
21:09Because when I light it up, I want you to get the full effect.
21:11Okay?
21:12All right.
21:12I'm going to go in?
21:12All right.
21:12Let's do it.
21:17Man, if Robert was that excited to see this sign, I can't wait until he sees it lit up.
21:22One, two, three.
21:27Oh, man.
21:29That's perfect.
21:31I love the way it glows.
21:33Oh, you did a great job.
21:36The sign is so cool.
21:38It takes me back to when I was a little child, being able to see these signs lit up at
21:42night
21:42when you're driving down the road.
21:43You don't see that kind of stuff anymore.
21:45So it's kind of nice to see it again.
21:47Thank you, Rick, very, very much.
21:49I couldn't be happier.
21:50You bet.
21:52All right, buddy.
21:53You got it.
21:54I've got to figure out how to get it home.
21:55Ha, ha.
21:56Ha, ha.
21:57Ha, ha.
21:57Ha, ha.
