00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03I'd like to turn a Volkswagen Bug into a bag.
00:05Great. Let's go look at it.
00:06I don't have a car.
00:09Oh.
00:10Hey, Dad. Caveman's here.
00:12What I need is somebody to work the night shift, okay?
00:15Do I get a gun?
00:17Look at all these cool old cars.
00:19If you drive my prices up, boy, we're gonna go toe-to-toe.
00:23I'm looking between $85,000 and $11,000 to finish that whole car.
00:26How about, uh, $5,000?
00:31I'm Rick Dale.
00:33And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:37To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:43Every project has its challenges, but there's no job we can't handle.
00:49This is American Restoration.
01:00Whoa, whoa, whoa, that's good.
01:01Hey, Rick.
01:03Hey, you got a customer, man.
01:05Hi.
01:05I'm Randy.
01:06Randy, I'm Rick. Good to meet you.
01:07Nice to meet you.
01:08How can I help you?
01:08I'd like to turn a Volkswagen Bug into a bag.
01:12Like a Beetle?
01:12Yeah, exactly. Like Herbie.
01:14I love bugs.
01:15That's awesome, yeah.
01:16I think Herbie was a 63 VW Beetle.
01:19Exactly, exactly.
01:21So great, let's go look at it.
01:22I don't have a car.
01:24You don't have a car?
01:25No car.
01:26Hoping that you can, uh, find something for me.
01:28We don't do a lot of cars.
01:30I mean, we do have some pictures or something, right?
01:32Yeah.
01:32Of stuff that we've done, maybe the couch, the car couch.
01:34Why don't you go get the file, see if we can help it?
01:37Okay, cool.
01:38Believe it or not, we actually have some experience turning cars into furniture.
01:42Not that it's easy.
01:43Custom jobs like these are often very pricey.
01:46You want to take a Volkswagen, chop it up, and make a bed out of it.
01:50Yeah, absolutely.
01:50Curious why.
01:51So, my stepfather and I had put one together for myself when I was a kid.
01:54So, I just had a son, and ever since he was born, we've been talking about how we're going to
01:59do it again.
02:00I can sort of relate to that.
02:01I built Tyler a bed out of a Coke machine when he was, like, four years old.
02:04And then your son right now is how old?
02:07He's fine.
02:07Is he into Herbie, too?
02:09Yeah, I've been showing him a few of them.
02:11I got the file for you, and there's some scratch paper.
02:15I don't know what you're going to do.
02:16Okay, okay.
02:16We built this car couch out of a 16 Cadillac.
02:19So, this is how it came in.
02:21These were the pieces, and then this one here is a picture of it totally finished.
02:25That's really nice.
02:26Yeah, see, it's got all the chrome on it.
02:28It had the fins on it that they wanted.
02:30The lights all lit up.
02:32As far as a bed, what did you have in mind?
02:35Let me show you some pictures of what I had, okay?
02:37What we had was the front end of the Volkswagen Bug, okay?
02:40And just chopped out the windshield, and then shoved the bed right underneath it.
02:44Very cool.
02:45So, you would sleep with your feet inside the trunk, which is like the front of the VW.
02:50And then you got your sheets with 53, just like Herbie had.
02:54Yeah, I mean, this is the coolest room ever for a kid.
02:56Absolutely.
02:56Believe me, I wish my room would look like that.
02:58The thing about Volkswagens, I mean, they've been around since the 30s.
03:02Hitler had ordered that Germany build a low-cost, fuel-efficient, and easy-to-fix people's car.
03:08And that Beetle design had the longest production run of any vehicle worldwide.
03:14Okay, so, it looks like you're trying to do the front end of the car.
03:17Yep.
03:18What color?
03:19White.
03:19White.
03:20Let's do it up like Herbie.
03:22Herbie White.
03:22Want to do the dash?
03:23Yeah, absolutely.
03:24So, the coolest part about it was you can get up in there and pretend like you're driving, right?
03:28I want to leave the hood of the car on so it actually looks like Herbie and the bed will
03:32go back here.
03:33Finishing out the inside of the car is going to be probably the hardest part.
03:37Any of this framework inside of here that's sharp, they're going to have to have something on them to where,
03:41when your son goes to bed, he doesn't get hurt.
03:44And I need half of a Volkswagen.
03:47So, how much would something like this cost?
03:50All right.
03:52I'm looking at probably between $85,000 and $11,000 to finish that whole car.
03:56All right.
03:57Um, how about, uh, $5,000?
04:00Yeah.
04:02I haven't even bought the car yet.
04:04That could cost $2,000.
04:05This isn't the cat wagon.
04:07This is the Volkswagen.
04:08This is the Volkswagen.
04:08Do you know how those are cherished?
04:09Look at you.
04:11That's right.
04:12Those are Herbies, man.
04:14It's a lot of work.
04:15So, it's going to add up a little bit.
04:18Well, you know, I had a lot of great memories of this when I was a kid.
04:21So, let's go ahead and do it.
04:23You can do it.
04:23All right, awesome.
04:24For the amount of money that I'm spending, Rick better hit this out of the park.
04:27He better make something that is as good as the memories that I had.
04:36Hey, Dad.
04:37Yeah.
04:38Caveman's here.
04:39Oh, cool.
04:40Hey.
04:40Hey, Rick.
04:41How you doing, bud?
04:42What I need is somebody to work the night shift, okay?
04:46Security and moving some stuff around is what I'm looking for.
04:48Okay.
04:49I need some extra help at the shop.
04:51So, my buddy over at A-Cycle recommended this guy caveman for the job.
04:55I don't know why they call him caveman, but I can guess.
04:59Do I get a gun?
05:01You won't get one from me.
05:05What does he think I want for security?
05:08I can't use a caveman club.
05:10This is Las Vegas.
05:11Come on back.
05:12I'll show you around.
05:13All right.
05:13So, I've got, like, refrigerators here that should be over there.
05:16I've got coke machines sitting with the gas pumps.
05:18So, I've got to get some organization in here.
05:21Okay.
05:21And another problem is it's like anybody can just jump over that fence,
05:24snag one of these little things that mean a lot to me, and leave with it.
05:28Do you need a watchdog and everything?
05:29I'm good with that.
05:31All right.
05:32One other thing.
05:34I also need a place to stay.
05:37You got something like that around?
05:39A place to stay?
05:41My girlfriend's nuts, and sometimes I'll walk in the front door.
05:45There's no telling what I walk into.
05:48It's nice to have a backup plan.
05:52Well, I mean, there's an old trailer over there.
05:55It's not much to look at.
05:56I can show it to you.
05:58I was left in worse places.
05:59You know, I once shared a cave with a bear.
06:02I didn't know he was in there until I woke up.
06:04That's the best damn long clock I ever had.
06:09Well, this would be your home.
06:14That's nice.
06:15This is great.
06:16I mean, there's a roof.
06:17I mean, you've got a heater over here, a refrigerator.
06:20This is cool.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Okay.
06:23You know, if this is a place that you want a hanger at,
06:25I'm willing to do it.
06:26Sounds good to me.
06:26You got it.
06:27Awesome.
06:27All right.
06:28I get a peace of mind that the Boneyard's safer,
06:31and Caveman gets a place to pick the flies out of his beard.
06:34I mean, it's a win-win situation.
06:37I don't have to pay for this, do I?
06:38No, you don't have to pay for it.
06:39Okay?
06:40All right.
06:47Look at all these cool old cars.
06:50What did I tell you about being all excited about stuff?
06:52If you drive my prices up, boy, we're going to go toe-to-toe.
06:56Perfect negotiator.
07:00How's it going, Ralph?
07:01Good.
07:02How you doing, Ralph?
07:03Doing great.
07:04Good to see you.
07:04You remember our excited little picker here, right?
07:07Hey, good to be back.
07:09What are we looking for?
07:10Well, today we need a V-Dub Beetle.
07:12And I knew if there was a guy with a car, it was you.
07:16So, here we are.
07:17Sure.
07:17Right on.
07:18Thanks a lot.
07:19Let's check it out.
07:20If Leonard's going to be a picker, he needs to pick smarter and learn the art of negotiation.
07:24And probably some people skills.
07:26But we'll start with picking and negotiating.
07:29It's Herbie from the Love Bug.
07:31It is Herbie.
07:33This bug looks pretty nice.
07:35So, are we going to get to negotiating or what?
07:38Um, no.
07:39Not on these.
07:40They're actually too complete.
07:43Okay?
07:43Too complete.
07:44Too complete.
07:44We're going to go slicing and dicing.
07:46You don't want all the wheels.
07:48You don't need them.
07:48You don't want to go get in a really, really nice car that could be restored and just cut
07:54into it.
07:55Yeah, because that would be a waste.
07:56Correct.
07:57Very good.
07:58Oh, look at that green one.
07:59That's perfect.
08:00No, Leonard.
08:01All three of these are wasted.
08:04All right?
08:05On to the next.
08:08This car's a piece of junk.
08:09I guess we take it.
08:10What do we got in the front?
08:11What do we got in the front?
08:11Anything?
08:12Nope.
08:13No.
08:14Okay?
08:14Here's the deal with this one.
08:16It's a little too sliced and diced, all right?
08:17There's no pleasing you is there, Ron.
08:19That's why they call it picking, Leonard, and not just buying.
08:22This one's pretty nice, dude.
08:25This one is pretty dang nice.
08:27The seats are pretty much torn out.
08:29We got to just take them out.
08:30Okay.
08:30The doors are stripped for lightweight just in case we do pull them off.
08:34Steering wheels intact just in case they want to keep it.
08:36I like this one a lot.
08:38Go find Ralph.
08:39Mm-hmm.
08:39Bring him back over here so we can talk about price.
08:44Man, that cat is different.
08:47Ron, I found Ralph.
08:50Good job.
08:51Let's get to negotiate.
08:53All right.
08:54I think we found, uh, her culprit right here.
08:57How much do you want?
08:59Uh, about $1,800.
09:02That sounds pretty good, right?
09:05Oh.
09:07Leonard, what did I tell you?
09:08Follow your lead.
09:10Which means what?
09:11My lips are sealed.
09:16Our budget is around 8-ish.
09:20How about $4,800?
09:25How about $1,800?
09:26How about $1,800?
09:30I think we can work with that.
09:32Absolutely.
09:33All right, $1,200?
09:34Sounds good to me.
09:34Right on.
09:35Yeah, we got a deal.
09:36All right.
09:37I'm thrilled with $1,200.
09:39Overall, it's just the right Beetle.
09:41I just hope Rick agrees.
09:44You have to be very careful of the existing gas line that could catch on fire.
09:51What the hell?
09:53Hey!
09:55Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
09:57Stop!
10:03Keep going.
10:05Keep going.
10:07When I go on a pick, I always have a goal in mind that I try to beat.
10:10I figure this V-Dub is worth $1,500.
10:12I got it for $1,200, so I'm happy.
10:14I just hope Rick agrees.
10:18Well, you got a V-Dub, yeah?
10:19Yes, I did.
10:21You know, you send me after something, and I get it done.
10:24That's how I do it.
10:25And I helped.
10:26What?
10:27Yeah.
10:28It looks like a total car.
10:30It looks like a complete car.
10:32I mean, the engine is there, but it'll never run again.
10:35The transmission's out of it.
10:36There's seats in it, but they don't belong to it.
10:38So they were going to be garbage anyways.
10:40Let's see.
10:42Oh, that's rusted out.
10:44A little bit of rot there.
10:45There is nothing good there.
10:46Being this is all trash, and the bottom of the frame is ruined, that's good.
10:52So negotiation processes, I'm very interested in how those went.
10:56He started at $1,800 for it, so we went back and forth a little bit, but I ended up
11:02getting
11:02it for $1,200.
11:05Yeah, that's good then.
11:06That's good.
11:07Good job.
11:08You did a good job.
11:09Yeah.
11:10You did a good job, Ron.
11:12So we're going to give it Herbie eyes, you know, give it a little personality.
11:16Yeah.
11:16A little flair.
11:17Yeah.
11:17So it's going to be staring right at you when you walk into the room.
11:20Maybe we add a license plate, like in the original movie.
11:24Nice touch.
11:26Nice touch.
11:27See?
11:28I'm going to throw a Herbie marathon at my place if you want.
11:31You're invited.
11:33I'm out of town that year.
11:34Five hours straight of Herbie movies for research.
11:37This is work-related.
11:46Oh.
12:04What the hell is going on here?
12:06Well, I'm staying in the trailer.
12:09That's where I've been sleeping.
12:11This is news to me.
12:12You need to talk to your dad.
12:14He's the one who said I could stay in the trailer.
12:16Oh, God.
12:17Just try to put some clothes on.
12:18I don't want anybody to see what I just had to see.
12:24Okay, Eric, it's right over here.
12:26To make sure that this job stays on budget, I need to consult with my friend Eric and make sure
12:31that we cut this car in the exact right place.
12:34So this is what I need your help with.
12:35I mean, a customer came in and wanted me to turn this Volkswagen bug into Herbie the love bed.
12:43Oh, great.
12:44Yeah.
12:44This is a good car for it.
12:46I mean, it appears to be, you know, besides the floor pans, which always rust.
12:50Yeah.
12:50It's a good car.
12:51I didn't want to cut something in half that we could actually restore.
12:55Basically, the car's trash.
12:57So I need help from you to know how to do it.
13:00The trunk's got to open and close.
13:03And I want to put the bed in the passenger area and turn the trunk into some kind of storage.
13:08So we're going to have to come in here and remove all this firewall area also.
13:11Right.
13:12All the wiring, all the mechanical stuff.
13:14What about inside?
13:16He wants to be able to keep the dash.
13:19It has to keep the steering wheel.
13:21It's like, where do I cut this?
13:23One thing we're going to have to get is a power saw that we can cut through the roof.
13:28Okay.
13:29Cut through the floor.
13:30Literally split this car in half.
13:32Right.
13:32There's a support right here that actually makes this area real strong.
13:36So we want to go right behind that so we can keep that.
13:38You have to be very careful of the existing gas line and anything else that could catch on fire.
13:47Because with this saw, it's going to make a lot of sparks.
13:49You'll do good at it as long as you get your cuts where they need to be the first time
13:52because, you know, you only have one chance.
13:55Oh.
13:56Or you're going to have an enormous amount of man hours repairing what you messed up.
14:02Okay.
14:03I don't want to ruin it and I don't want to go over budget.
14:05So, if we get everything out of this thing and get us sort of ready to cut, can you come
14:10back and show me where to cut exactly?
14:13Yeah.
14:13Yeah, I can come back.
14:14Awesome.
14:15Okay, we'll get it all torn apart, ready to go and then I'll call you up.
14:18That'd be great.
14:18I'm going to show you up.
14:18Great.
14:34We drained the gas, took out all the seats and made this Volkswagen safe to cut.
14:39On our last car to furniture project, I just didn't have the heart to cut a caddy in half.
14:44I just can't do it.
14:46I don't want to kill it.
14:47Hey, Eric's here.
14:49Oh, cool.
14:50Perfect timing.
14:51But right now, I'm ready to rip some steel.
14:53We're ready.
14:54Let's do it.
14:55Woo!
14:59Yeah!
15:02Woo-hoo!
15:04Hell yeah!
15:06Riding around this one-horse town in the feet of the barfield.
15:11Got his arms, radio on each hand upon the wheel.
15:16What a rush.
15:17I got to let Tyler try this thing out.
15:20Let's just stick it under there just in case I don't want this roof buckling on him.
15:23There's pride.
15:27There's pride.
15:29Feel the open road.
15:36Feel the open road.
15:40Ride the open road.
15:42Woo!
15:43Woo!
15:47Woo!
15:49All right.
15:49That was scary.
15:51Good job, gentlemen.
15:53How's that look?
15:54That was it right there.
15:55Clean cut.
15:55Perfect.
15:56Thanks, Eric.
15:57Very much.
15:58Very good.
15:58That's good.
16:00Be careful.
16:00You don't get cut.
16:01When painting a piece of galvanized metal, the key is in the prep.
16:05If not, you're going to be watching your fresh paint job peel away in no time.
16:09Which of the following household items can be used when preparing to paint a piece of galvanized metal?
16:14A, white vinegar.
16:16B, safflower oil.
16:17C, motor oil.
16:19D, dry ice.
16:21The answer and more coming up.
16:27Which of the following household items can be used when preparing to paint a piece of galvanized metal?
16:33The correct answer is A, white vinegar.
16:35Once you've cleaned your galvanized metal, take a rag, put some white vinegar on it, and wipe the surface of
16:41your metal.
16:42The white vinegar acts as an acid and will etch the metal so the paint will stick.
16:47This is what your final product will look like.
16:49This is a very easy way to make sure that your paint will stick.
16:53And it's the only way it'll stick to galvanized metal.
16:57All right, so tonight what I need you to do is organize the line of all the machines.
17:02Whoa, what the hell?
17:04Hey!
17:06Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
17:08Stop!
17:08Well done!
17:09Tyler, geez, where's this going?
17:11What are you talking about?
17:13Well, it can't go right now.
17:14I mean, caveman's been crashing in there.
17:16Yeah, but I told you I was going to have this repaired.
17:19What's he supposed to do?
17:20I need him here to watch stuff.
17:21Don't worry about it, Rick.
17:22I should be getting back over to my girlfriend's house anyway.
17:24But one thing, with your streamlined there, the plumbing needs a little work in there.
17:31Why?
17:32Well, it doesn't work.
17:35Oh, no, you didn't.
17:37Oh, no, you did not.
17:38You know.
17:39I don't even want to know.
17:40You're cleaning now.
17:41No, I'm not.
17:42You're cleaning now.
17:42I'm coming nowhere near his plumbing.
17:44I'll tell you that right now.
17:45Hey, hey, hey.
17:46Look, I'll go in.
17:47I'll take care of it.
17:49Do you guys have, like, a gas mask or anything?
17:59Hey, Rick.
18:00Yeah.
18:01Hey, Randy and his family are here.
18:03Hey, Randy.
18:03Good to see you again.
18:04Good to see you.
18:05Rick, this is my son, Damien.
18:07Hey, Damien.
18:07How you doing, bud?
18:08This is my stepfather, Bob.
18:10Hey, Bob.
18:10Good to meet you.
18:11How you doing, Rick?
18:12Damien, you ready for a big surprise?
18:15You guys are going to absolutely love it.
18:16You're really going to love it.
18:19Let's go back here.
18:20Come on, Damien.
18:21I'm going to go back to work, all right?
18:22Okay, cool.
18:22Enjoy, guys.
18:23Thanks, man.
18:23Bye-bye.
18:25Okay, everybody just sort of right about there so you can see it.
18:31Randy, your stepdad, built this with you.
18:34And basically, you've got, like, three generations going on right now.
18:36Yeah.
18:37I only came to Rick with a picture.
18:39And I really hope that he's able to make what we wanted in this bed.
18:42I have a lot of memories of my Volkswagen.
18:44I'm really excited about being able to pass that on to Damien.
18:48Damien, as well.
18:48Damien, you ready?
18:50Yeah, okay.
18:51Here it comes.
18:52One, two, three.
18:55I love it.
18:57Oh, wow.
18:59Oh, wow.
19:02I got tears in my eyes.
19:04You like it?
19:05Pretty cool, huh?
19:06Yes.
19:07They're wonderful.
19:08Oh.
19:09You bet.
19:09He's mesmerized.
19:10Yeah.
19:15It's got the original stripes, the numbers in the right place, and it's almost just like
19:20Herbie.
19:21The producers of Herbie actually picked the number 53 in honor of L.A. Dodger Don Drysdale.
19:27This is actually the license plate and the exact numbers from the Herbie movies.
19:32OFP-857 refers to the first time the film's producer worked with Disney.
19:38Our first production, August 1957.
19:41Oh, boy.
19:42Herbie.
19:43Check it out.
19:44Watch this.
19:45Here you want to.
19:48Here we go.
19:48Oh, very cool.
19:51We turned the trunk into a toy box.
19:53All the wires that were in here, all the cables and everything, we pulled all that out of
19:57there.
19:58We ended up putting these spring covers over here so Damien doesn't get his fingers stuck
20:02in there.
20:02What a great idea.
20:04Okay, so now all your toys are inside there, and you can keep your room clean.
20:09Mama's going to be happy about that.
20:11So on the dashboard, I wanted to give him stuff to do, so now, Damien, you can open up
20:16the glove box, you can turn this and open it up.
20:19And put stuff in here.
20:20Put stuff right in there.
20:22That's actually a light, so pull.
20:25That turns the lights on.
20:26So that way, in the middle of the night, if you get afraid, you can turn on the headlights,
20:31okay?
20:33That's wonderful.
20:34Good, I'm glad you like it.
20:36So let's go inside.
20:37I'll show you around the shop.
20:38All right.
20:39Great.
20:39You know, Damien, I don't know if Damien's coming.
20:41You want to come inside and see the shop?
20:43Come on in.
20:44This is awesome.
20:53What are you doing?
20:54I'm halfway through my Herbie marathon.
20:56Well, the shop's closing, so we're all leaving.
20:58Okay, just a little bit longer.
21:00I only have three movies left.
21:02Oh, this is the best part.
21:03Herbie's about to get cut in half by a laser, but he's going to win the race anyway, because
21:06he's a magic.
21:07You coming?
21:09Actually, no.
21:10No, I haven't seen Herbie in a long time.
21:11I'm going to stay with him.
21:12All right.
21:12Come on over.
21:13Children.
21:14I mean, look at him go.
21:15Boom.
21:16Good night, guys.
21:18Some delicious movie snacks?
21:19Of course.
21:21You got any beer, though?
21:24That's right.
21:24I'll forgive you.
21:25If you think this movie's good, the next one is even better.
21:27I'll see you tonight.
