00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02You gotta check this thing out, man.
00:04It's my F-106 ejection seat.
00:06Holy crap.
00:07We're gonna ride a ride that shoots you up in the air
00:10just like an ejector seat.
00:15All right, Bradley, you're in charge.
00:17Are we reusing this, or do you want to change it?
00:19Yeah.
00:20That was an either-or.
00:21Somebody's gonna have to redo everything
00:23Bradley just did.
00:25up big time, buddy.
00:28I'm Rick Dale.
00:30And at my shop,
00:31we share a passion.
00:33To give new life
00:36to pieces from the past.
00:39Every project has its challenges,
00:42but there's no job
00:44we can't handle.
00:46This
00:47is American Restoration.
00:51One of the greatest things about owning your own business
00:54is watching it progress.
00:55Check it out.
00:56Wow.
00:57You watch the shop grow.
00:59You watch the team grow.
01:00And I get to watch my boys,
01:02Bretley and Tyler, grow too.
01:03You gotta get the actual wheels on.
01:05Woo!
01:06They're the future of this company.
01:08Though sometimes I wonder what the future will bring.
01:11What the ?
01:12Tyler!
01:13Get over here.
01:13Oh, my God.
01:15Lord help us.
01:18Rick.
01:19No.
01:19Guess what?
01:20That popcorn machine I brought back from California.
01:22Yeah.
01:22We only got a couple out in the bone yard.
01:24That's really into it right now.
01:25What do you need me for?
01:26You're the man.
01:27Come on.
01:27You can do it.
01:28Come on.
01:29I'll give you a hand.
01:29This time, I want you to take notes.
01:31Bretley's shown me he can handle the grunt work,
01:33and he's not a bad picker.
01:35But in the end, what drives this business are our customers.
01:37So he's gotta start getting into sales
01:39and learning how to keep our clients happy.
01:41All right, guys, I brought Rick out here.
01:43Hey, I'm Rick.
01:44I'm Jeremy.
01:45Jeremy?
01:46Lisa Marie.
01:47Lisa, good to meet you.
01:48All right, so Bretley says you're interested.
01:50This popcorn machine, they have a company
01:52they want to do something with, their logo or something, right?
01:55Yeah, we own a gourmet popcorn and candy store.
01:57Oh, okay.
01:58And this just kind of caught our eye.
01:59Our store was built in the 1900s.
02:01Oh, wow.
02:02So you really got the old style looking.
02:04Yes.
02:04I mean, everybody loves popcorn, right?
02:05That's right.
02:06I mean, the reason why it got so popular
02:07is because in World War II, we were sending all our sugar out
02:10to help the war, and all of a sudden, popcorn took off.
02:13It was five cents a bag.
02:14It was really good for you.
02:16It was better than candy.
02:17Boom.
02:18Popcorn, big staple.
02:20So Bretley brought this in.
02:21He was running around picking, and it came actually off of Route 66.
02:25It's built in the 70s by a Coronado.
02:28That's what this is.
02:29You know, this is made to look like it's probably
02:31in the early 1900s, but it is 70s.
02:34It caught my eye when we looked at it.
02:36I want it to look vintage, but it has to be functional as well.
02:39Our store, it's very eclectic.
02:41There's nothing that matches.
02:43It's green, yellow, orange.
02:45So any of those bright colors that you can use would probably be great.
02:49I just can't have the burgundy.
02:51Okay.
02:52Do you want to just say fresh popcorn?
02:53Are you wanting your name on this thing?
02:55We do want our name on the side of it.
02:57The Sweet and Salty with Sulphur Springs, Texas on the bottom.
02:59Okay.
03:00And on the other side, we want to say City of Sulphur Springs
03:02in that old 19th century writing.
03:04Okay.
03:05Some kind of cursive.
03:06Okay.
03:06We do a lot of functions and charities in our downtown area,
03:09and we'd like to be able to use it down there.
03:11Mobile.
03:12Yes, it has to be mobile.
03:13But realistically, we have to say within a budget,
03:17this isn't just for us, it's for our whole town.
03:19So really, we'd like to say about $10,000 or $15,000.
03:22Okay.
03:23I mean, there's a lot of work here.
03:24There's a lot of polishing.
03:25There's a lot of hand painting.
03:27And one of my biggest fears is that burner, the motor,
03:29it doesn't actually work.
03:31Yeah.
03:31I'm hoping I can get parts or fix it, one or the other.
03:33To do all that, I'm looking between $13,000 and I'd say $15,000 max.
03:41As long as we can stay within our budget, I'm great with it.
03:44All right, nothing.
03:45All right.
03:46We appreciate it.
03:46Great.
03:47Thanks, Greg.
03:48All right, Bradley, this is your project.
03:49You're in charge.
03:50Hope I remember everything we talked about.
04:00Hey, Rick.
04:01What?
04:02Dude, come here.
04:03You got to check this thing out, man.
04:05What is that?
04:06It's my F-106 ejection seat.
04:09Badass.
04:11Holy crap.
04:12This is from an F-106 fighter jet.
04:15This is the sixth one that was produced and used by the Air Force.
04:18Wow.
04:19And it is one of the most awesome pieces that I've ever acquired in my life.
04:22Wow.
04:23And you're actually a pilot yourself?
04:25Yes, sir.
04:261976, we were driving next to McCord Air Force Base, and lo and behold, I heard a sound,
04:31looked up, two of these jets were flying over.
04:33I was sold.
04:34I just had to be a pilot, and...
04:36You're collecting ejector seats.
04:38I...
04:38Yes.
04:39A while back, I got to fly in an F-16.
04:42It was the most exhilarating, thrilling ride I've ever had.
04:46Wow.
04:47Oh, my God.
04:50Unbelievable.
04:51I also got to learn how to operate the seat because it's your safety mechanism.
04:56In case something happens, out you go.
04:57The F-106 was a fast plane.
05:00It is, to this day, the fastest single-engine fighter at 40,000 feet.
05:06It made that run back in 1959, so...
05:08Right.
05:09They did, like, 1,500 miles an hour.
05:10That's some high-tech stuff in 59.
05:13What do you want to do to this?
05:14I just want to display it.
05:16I would like to restore this back to as close as possible to original condition.
05:20I have the seat itself, descriptions, heart numbers.
05:23Oh, wow.
05:23Man, you got a manual.
05:25This is important to me.
05:26This is very important to me.
05:27I can see that.
05:28Some of the items that I do want to leave untouched, the data plates.
05:32If you can clean them, polish them, or whatnot, and it doesn't remove any of the original,
05:37that would be great.
05:39Pull handle for seat ejection.
05:40And it's basically pull here, right?
05:42Pull.
05:43And...
05:44Man, this thing is complex.
05:46Look at all this.
05:48Okay.
05:48So to restore this, a lot of the restorations, what I like doing is I like gutting it.
05:52I mean, taking it all the way apart.
05:53But a lot of it's riveted.
05:55You got a lot of braided line and everything's on hoses.
05:57If I can get around it all, I won't need to get inside there.
06:00We'll have to take the labels, get those all cleaned up, polish all the belt portions and all those pieces
06:06in there.
06:07I'm looking at probably 5,500 to do the whole thing.
06:1255.
06:13I was looking at anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000.
06:16I was hoping around 2,500.
06:18Yeah.
06:19I mean, I really want to do this seat.
06:22So if I can come down to...
06:24If I do it for 45, I mean, can you make that happen?
06:28Because I want to do it bad.
06:30To have this seat, this aircraft that I know is responsible for making me who I am today.
06:3645, huh?
06:37Yeah.
06:39We got it.
06:40All right.
06:41We got a deal.
06:41I hope that Rick can come through because I mentioned that it's very important.
06:45This historical value, the sentimental value for me.
06:48But most of all, one day I hope that I can pass it on to my kids.
06:59Hey, what's up?
07:01Hey, Bradley.
07:02All right.
07:02So I'm overseeing this project.
07:05Really?
07:06So they wanted on this side, City of Sulphur Springs.
07:10Can you write that down for me?
07:11It's all written down.
07:12I got a little mock-up.
07:13Sulphur Springs.
07:14I know you can't read that, but...
07:16No, uh...
07:17This is my attempt to draw the popcorn machine.
07:19I just gave up.
07:20Can you at least make me a copy of that?
07:22Yeah.
07:23And the wheels, these are going to be yellow, right?
07:26I don't know.
07:27You tell me.
07:28Working with Bradley is way different than working with Rick.
07:31Rick knows exactly what he wants.
07:33He gives you good direction.
07:34Bradley, your guess is as good as mine.
07:37Like old school.
07:37We could either go the same...
07:39So are we reusing this or you want to change it?
07:41Yeah.
07:42Yeah?
07:42That was an either or.
07:44So for the font, we need to go like an 1899 theme, you know?
07:49Could you be a little more specific when you say 1899 style?
07:54Exactly what it means, Ted.
07:56Just the era of what was going on in 1899.
07:59Whoever was president, 1899.
08:021889 is old.
08:04Anything that was happening that year, themes, colors, however they wrote, 1889.
08:101899.
08:11Yeah.
08:11If that's the best you can give me, then I'll work with that.
08:15You got it, man.
08:16If I got it, you got it.
08:17In fact, you take care of the artwork, and I'll start painting the base coat.
08:20But first, I'm going to make a copy of this.
08:22Okay.
08:23I just hope that I can take what information Brentley gave me and turn it into something
08:27usable and not get my butt chewed off by Rick later after it's all done.
08:31Oh, boy.
08:34Drop and give me 20, soldier!
08:36I'm not f***ing kidding.
08:37Get out of there.
08:38Our customers are here to pick up the popcorn machine.
08:40The what?
08:41I didn't know they were coming.
08:42He would have known if he would have answered the phone.
09:05Check this thing out, huh?
09:06What is that?
09:08It's an ejection seat out of a jet, an Air Force jet.
09:11Wow.
09:12Yeah.
09:12There's a lot of stuff.
09:13It's had thousands of parts.
09:14We have to take a lot of pictures.
09:16Yeah.
09:17Because once we get it apart, we'll never get it back together again.
09:20Hey, Tyler.
09:21Check me out.
09:22Check it out.
09:23Oh, that's priceless.
09:29It looks like the survival kit's missing.
09:32It's supposed to be tucked under the seat.
09:38Okay, just keep taking pictures.
09:40You run out of film yet?
09:42Really, Dad?
09:42Film?
09:50Really?
09:50What's up?
09:52What are you dressed like that for?
09:54What are you doing?
09:54I'm painting.
09:55You're painting?
09:56Yep.
09:57What are you painting?
09:57Uh, the popcorn machine.
09:59Looks really good.
10:00It looks good?
10:01Yeah, it looks good.
10:03Hey, I gotta see this.
10:04So Rick wanted me to step up and take the reins on this popcorn machine project.
10:09All right, let's see what you did here.
10:10And I took those reins, so Rick's gonna know I'm the man.
10:14This is the popcorn?
10:16Yeah.
10:18Brett Lee, did you listen to the customer?
10:20Yeah.
10:20When they said the color to paint?
10:22Yeah.
10:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:23Did you hear the part where they said,
10:25I specifically don't want burgundy?
10:29I heard, like, ten colors.
10:31Right.
10:32She was, like, jumping all over with different colors that she wanted,
10:35but the problem was there was one that she didn't want.
10:37I just can't have the burgundy.
10:39Burgundy.
10:40Burgundy.
10:41Burgundy.
10:42Burgundy?
10:43Burgundy.
10:46Stop peeling your orange and listen and pay attention and focus.
10:50Okay?
10:51All right.
10:51What I want you to do right now is to call that customer
10:55and find out exactly what she needs in case you messed up the rest of the line.
10:59Okay?
11:00Yeah.
11:01All right?
11:01Wrong color.
11:06We got this badass ejection seat and the customer expects nothing but the best.
11:11We're tearing it down so Cowboy can blast the old paint.
11:15Then Manny will pound out all the body work so it's ready for Tyler to do the base coat.
11:18But before we can call it done, I'm gonna take Tyler on a little recon mission.
11:24So what are we looking for here?
11:25The, uh, survival kit for the F-106 ejector seat.
11:29Ejection seat.
11:30Yes.
11:31Gotcha.
11:32Whoa!
11:33This place looks nuts.
11:35Yeah, hopefully they'll at least have parts of a survival kit.
11:39Wow.
11:39They got a lot of goodies.
11:45Drop and give me 20, soldier!
11:48I'm not f-ing kidding.
11:49Get down there.
11:53All right, well, what is it?
11:54A survival kit inside would have a radio, a knife, probably a compass.
11:59Oh, what about something like this?
12:01These are K-rations or rations.
12:03I mean, before these, they had rations which were in cans,
12:07and they had a candle burn on the top that you peeled off,
12:10and you opened the can.
12:11Nowadays, they actually can open them up, hit the air, and it gets hot,
12:14so you have a hot meal.
12:15Let's go up and ask the person in front if they have some of this stuff,
12:18because we're not here for this.
12:19We're here for the survival kit.
12:21Excuse me.
12:22Hi.
12:22Hey, um, we're restoring an old ejection seat.
12:26It's somewhere from the 60s out of, like, an F-106 aircraft,
12:30and on the bottom it was supposedly a survival kit.
12:32Um, there's not a lot out there for buying that old,
12:35and when we get it, we pretty much hold on to it.
12:38I do know a company, though, that have some vintage-style things.
12:41They might have something for you.
12:43Really?
12:43Yeah.
12:44I'll get you the cart once in.
12:45Oh, awesome.
12:46Okay, so this mission might have been a bust,
12:48but in this kind of work, sometimes a busted mission turns into a leap.
12:53All right, so we headed back to the shop?
12:55No, Umbrella's gonna lock up the shop.
12:56I've got an idea for another mission.
12:58This sounds interesting.
13:00You'll like it.
13:11So you guys are trying to come tomorrow?
13:15All right, I'll see you tomorrow.
13:20Holy crap.
13:21Well, the Popcorn Machine customers just called.
13:24They're in town, and they need it tomorrow.
13:26The thing is, the shop closes in 15 minutes, and this thing is still in pieces.
13:31I'm in trouble.
13:33All right, so what are we doing here?
13:35Well, now I got a surprise.
13:36I want to show you something.
13:38Jeez.
13:39Yeah, check it out, huh?
13:40Look at everything you can see.
13:41It's awesome, huh?
13:42So what we're gonna do is we're gonna ride a ride that's gonna give you the same feeling
13:47and shoot you up in the air just like it would be an ejector seat.
13:50That's high.
13:51We're about 1,200, 1,100 feet.
13:56It'll be fine.
13:57Come on, let's go.
13:58Don't be afraid.
14:03Hello?
14:05Of course not.
14:06He's not picking up.
14:08What are you, sleeping?
14:12You can make it tighter.
14:16What are you doing?
14:18I don't know.
14:19It's Bradley.
14:20You're on the middle of a ride.
14:21You can't just be answering the phone.
14:23What if it goes up and you're on the phone?
14:24Yeah, you're not leaving yet, right?
14:26I don't want to do it.
14:27I don't want to do it.
14:29Come on, pick up the phone, Rick.
14:32Imagine yourself sitting in the cockpit.
14:34Oh, shut your front door, dude.
14:39All right, Kyle.
14:40We need to grab the popcorn machine parts and start putting it together.
14:44They're going to be here tomorrow.
14:47Come on.
14:47Like an all-night job.
14:48I know, all night.
14:50Well, I guess I don't mind the overtime pay.
14:52It's like Disneyland all over again where you guys made me go on .
14:54I didn't want to go on.
15:03That's what I'm talking about.
15:05Take a look out there, Tyler.
15:06This is what it feels like floating in a parachute.
15:09Oh, no.
15:09Yeah.
15:10Going down.
15:19We're coming down.
15:20We made it.
15:21We're alive.
15:22Think about it.
15:23That's what the ejection seat did.
15:24It saved your life.
15:26I can't even talk.
15:30That was awesome.
15:32Loved it.
15:34Now, see, Tyler, wasn't that fun?
15:36I think I'm going to puke.
15:38I wonder what Bradley wanted.
15:39I don't know.
15:40There's probably nothing.
15:46Finish that side.
15:47I'll start on this side.
15:50Man, this thing's looking like $18.99.
16:02What I want to do is I want to try to get these pieces.
16:05I want to get these things back on.
16:06You know, yeah.
16:07Hey, the customers are here to pick up the popcorn machine.
16:10The what?
16:11Yeah.
16:12Now?
16:13Yep.
16:13It's all done.
16:14It's wrapped up.
16:15I didn't know they were coming.
16:15I called you last night.
16:17You would have known if you would have answered your phone.
16:20The customers are ready.
16:21They're waiting outside.
16:23Bradley, are you kidding me?
16:24I haven't even seen it yet.
16:41I know that it was almost done.
16:48But Bradley knows that I have to QC it before the customer sees it.
16:52But now they're here, and I don't have that option.
16:55I guess I'm just going to have to put on a happy face and hope for the best.
16:58Hey, guys.
16:59Hey.
16:59How you doing?
16:59How are you?
17:01Good to see you again.
17:02Oh, this is John, the mayor.
17:03Wow.
17:03You brought the mayor.
17:04That's right.
17:05Had to.
17:06No pressure there.
17:07Of course the mayor's here.
17:09Great.
17:09This could be Bradley's last day on the job.
17:12You remember in the beginning, right?
17:14Yeah, it looked pretty rough when we saw it.
17:17All the lights missing.
17:18Yeah, it looked like it had been real faded.
17:20You know, some of the equipment, that's what I'm nervous about.
17:21Just make sure the equipment works.
17:23Right, you're about the beauty and you're about the equipment, right?
17:25That's what I do.
17:26That's right.
17:27Well, there could be a popcorn machine under there.
17:29There's only one way to find out.
17:30Here you go.
17:31One, two, three.
17:35Oh, man.
17:36Oh, I love it.
17:38That's awesome.
17:38The yellow, too.
17:40You love it?
17:41Oh, yeah.
17:41I do love it.
17:42Yes, score one for Bradley.
17:44Awesome.
17:45That looks really good.
17:46I like the green, and then I love the Starburst.
17:48I'm so glad we got to keep all that.
17:50Wow.
17:50Where's my logo?
17:51That's what I'm worried about.
17:53Yeah, a lot of bio.
17:53Oh, great.
17:54It looks so good.
17:57Y'all did a great job, especially with me throwing so much your way, saying,
18:01Oh, I want this and this and this and this.
18:03I'm completely happy.
18:04We did a lot of work to spruce this thing up.
18:07All the outlets have been rewired, every single one of them.
18:10Brett Lee decided to put this gold on there to sort of match the wood grains so it
18:14blend better.
18:14When you look up inside there, that's actually the original piece of stainless steel.
18:19Bud polished it out like a mirror, so all you see is popcorn.
18:22Back here where the popper is, the kettle itself, this has all been re-chrome plated.
18:26The insides have all been reworked, all the wiring, the heater, everything works inside
18:30this.
18:30The wheels themselves, we did all the woodwork and we painted them all yellow.
18:33See, they're barely rubbing on the ground, so when you push it, these wheels will turn.
18:37I love it.
18:38It's gorgeous.
18:39I can see 15 kids all lined up to grab popcorn.
18:42I'm so excited.
18:43They're going to love it.
18:44Speaking of lining up, you ready to line up for some popcorn?
18:46I'll serve you.
18:47Yeah, I'm ready.
18:48Hey.
18:49Oh, right to the back.
18:50Relly, getting back customers first.
18:53See, Rick, it's done and now they're happy.
18:56You did a great job, Relly, but next time you don't show it to me first, you're fired.
19:02So you happy?
19:02Very happy.
19:03It looks nice.
19:04Very happy?
19:05Good job, Relly.
19:05All right.
19:06Boom.
19:10The lead came through for the survival kit, so I just need Ted and Kyle to put the final
19:15touches on the ejection seat before the customer arrives.
19:18Hey, Rick.
19:19Yeah?
19:20Frank's here for the ejection seat.
19:22Hey, Frank, how you been?
19:23Doing fine.
19:23Doing real good.
19:24So you excited?
19:25Very excited.
19:26Let's go.
19:26Remember what it looked like?
19:28It was very faded, missing a ton of parts.
19:31Right?
19:31Yes.
19:31Old and used.
19:32All right, here it is.
19:33That's it?
19:34Yeah.
19:34I'm ready for this.
19:36Okay, here we go.
19:39One, two, three.
19:41Damn.
19:45This is better than I thought it would be.
19:47Check it out.
19:48This is phenomenal.
19:51It needed to be restored.
19:53Yeah, it did need to be restored.
19:57This is incredible.
19:59Big time, buddy.
20:01Remember how these look?
20:02Yes.
20:03So what we did is pulled them up as far as we could and got inside and painted everything
20:07on it.
20:08On the seat belts, we cleaned them all up and polished all this aluminum in here.
20:12Right.
20:12On the back, you can see all the cables have all been relabeled.
20:15I'm floored.
20:16I keep looking.
20:17I keep spotting more and more.
20:19What do you think of the base?
20:21Captain.
20:23I like that.
20:24I didn't notice.
20:25I like that.
20:26Yeah, I got a little surprise for you.
20:29Check out what's in there.
20:30Wow.
20:31Oh, you found the emergency stuff.
20:34Look at that.
20:35So this is one of the radios.
20:37There's containers.
20:38There's flashlights.
20:39There's...
20:39You got a bowie knife in here, too.
20:41Look at that.
20:41Yeah.
20:42The only thing I didn't put in there was a pistol for you.
20:44He found this kit.
20:46He found one that is almost identical that was used.
20:49Now that makes the seat complete.
20:52Moment of truth here.
20:56There you go.
20:57Perfect.
20:58On the stick.
20:59There you go.
21:01Perfect fit.
21:02Made it all worthwhile.
21:03Thank you, Rick.
21:03Thanks.
21:04That seat is restored above and beyond 100% from what I ever anticipated.
21:10It is history.
21:11It is my history.
21:12This seat is awesome.
21:13I cannot thank you enough for the job that you've done.
21:16You got it, man.
21:17You've outdone yourself this time.
