00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:03This motor's really, really rare.
00:04It was taken off because it started smoking.
00:07Oh, .
00:08It's not making any sense.
00:09Fire.
00:10If we can't make this motor work,
00:12we're in a world of hurt.
00:14With a mercantile scale, I'd be willing to give you $4,500,
00:17and I'll throw you a VIP party.
00:20You lowered the price to have a party?
00:22100%.
00:23You better hope that we make budget on this.
00:25I think it's pissed.
00:26That's .
00:27I know he's pissed.
00:30I'm Rick Dale, and at my shop, we share a passion.
00:36To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:42Every project has its challenges, but there's no job we can't handle.
00:48This is American Restoration.
00:54Hey, Dad.
00:56Yeah?
00:57I got a customer.
00:58He's got two items.
00:59He wants to get them restored.
01:01Oh, wow.
01:03How you doing?
01:04All right.
01:05I'm Rick.
01:05Chuck.
01:06Chuck, what you got here?
01:07Two parade bikes, but a 63 mini bike and a 75 tri-rod.
01:12Love the tank on it.
01:13It reminds me of, you know, like a Harley tank, you know?
01:16Where'd you get this?
01:18I bought off a couple of Shriners.
01:19Are you a Shriner?
01:20Yes.
01:20That's awesome.
01:22So you want to restore it and then do the parades again?
01:24Actually, it's back in the parades again.
01:25Yeah.
01:26Nice.
01:27I'm a member of the Aladdin Shrine in Ohio, and I like to use those two items in parades
01:32for my son and I to ride and help get more people out to support the Shriners Children's
01:36Hospital.
01:38I mean, do you know everything about Shriners and the symbols and all that, what that means?
01:42It's mostly Middle Eastern symbolism, right?
01:44Correct.
01:45I know that it's like a fraternity.
01:48Right.
01:48Yes.
01:49Fraternity.
01:49And you have to be a Mason first, right?
01:51Correct.
01:51And the Shriners founded a series of children's hospitals all over the United States.
01:55Yes.
01:55And they've got one in Canada.
01:56Yeah.
01:57And one in Mexico.
01:58That's great.
01:59Let's take a look at this mini bike.
02:01It's got a Briggs motor, it looks like, right?
02:03Yeah, but the original motor's over on a tri-rod there in a case.
02:06What is it?
02:07Let's see.
02:08It's a kickstart.
02:10The plug's in it, so it's not too bad.
02:12It doesn't have any compression, but...
02:14It was taken off because it started smoking.
02:16Oh.
02:17So it's got a bad ring or something?
02:18Yeah.
02:18Yeah.
02:19The frame itself has been broke, so we're going to have to fix that weld.
02:23The tank's leaking, so we're going to have to fix all that, strip the tank, do the same
02:27art exactly?
02:28Right.
02:29What's this say on here?
02:30That's the original owner's name.
02:32I want to change the name on both sides here and put Jocko, my son's name.
02:35Jocko, with a J.
02:36Yes.
02:36Okay.
02:38That sounds good.
02:38So the motor's going to be my biggest challenge.
02:41Now this one...
02:42Well, this is a 1975 tri-rod.
02:45They weren't one time licensed for the road.
02:47I've never picked a brand name up on it.
02:49How's this thing ride?
02:50Last parade, I had it in.
02:52The throttle stuck in it.
02:53It almost took out a couple of police officers, but I made it.
02:56Woo!
02:58Yeah.
02:58It might be a transmission issue.
03:00You could probably do a new piece of plexiglass here.
03:02I will put Chuck on there.
03:04You get the three-wheeler.
03:05Yeah.
03:05With the wheelie machine.
03:06That's got to have a little luxury, you know?
03:09Well, what's all this going to cost me, Rick?
03:11Well, let's start with that one.
03:13The minibike.
03:15Motor.
03:15Blinging it out.
03:16Upholstering everything.
03:18New grips.
03:18Getting that thing all done where you'll be proud of it to ride down the street.
03:22I'm looking at probably $15,000 to do that whole piece.
03:26$15,000 for that little bike?
03:28Yeah.
03:28This tri-rod, I'm looking at $18,000 on this one.
03:33Wow.
03:34A little more nice plan on going on.
03:38What about if we just do one?
03:39How about we just do the minibike?
03:40I think the minibike itself will be incredible.
03:44If it is as rare as I think it is, it'll be worth quite a bit.
03:47And fixing the motor, making it all original, that's going to be the one to do.
03:51We'll do that one.
03:52All right.
03:52Awesome.
03:53Awesome.
03:59What are we doing here?
04:00To look at something to get restored, dude.
04:01All the way out here?
04:02Yeah.
04:03Tyler and I are here today at the Pioneer Saloon.
04:05We got a call from a potential customer that might want us to restore something.
04:09And because it's a bar, well, you know I had to be there.
04:12Guys.
04:12Hey, I'm Ron.
04:13I'm Noel.
04:14I'm Tyler.
04:15Nice to meet you.
04:15You got something for us to look at?
04:16Yeah.
04:17It's our 100-year anniversary, and I've got a piece I'm thinking about restoring.
04:21Let's go check it out.
04:23This is it over here, guys.
04:25It's a mercantile scale.
04:27100 years ago, when you came into a store, your flour, your wheat, your coffee, it would
04:33come over to this scale, and it would be weighed, priced out, put in a bag, and sold to you.
04:37And this is original to the bar when it opened in 1913.
04:40So this has been here 100 years just like the bar.
04:42Wow.
04:43Holy smokes.
04:44This was so advanced for back in the day.
04:46The competing sale company merged with two other companies in the 1920s, and now they're IBM.
04:52Wow.
04:54That's how advanced this company was.
04:56All the pieces are there, right?
04:58Yeah.
04:58Nothing's missing, nothing's been lost.
05:00Right.
05:00And then what about working?
05:01Well, it used to work.
05:02Okay.
05:03It doesn't seem to work anymore.
05:04Okay.
05:04What's your kind of vision for it?
05:06We've got to keep it original.
05:07I like the colors, this greenish color.
05:10All this ornate art on the sides, we can redo all that.
05:13And then this glass, we're going to have to keep this original because it actually works like a magnifying glass
05:18to make the letters bigger.
05:19Oh, yeah, I never thought about that.
05:21So now you've seen it, what do you think this is going to run me?
05:24To restore this back to all original, save $5,400.
05:29Wow.
05:30Well, it's more than what I expected.
05:35What do you guys think about this?
05:37I'd be willing to give you $4,500 cash, and I'll throw you and everybody at your office one big
05:44party.
05:45That'll include dinner, steaks, and all the drinks you can drink.
05:49What?
05:50We should definitely do that.
05:52I don't know.
05:52That's what I think.
05:53Well, think like Rick.
05:54No.
05:56Yeah.
05:56Yeah.
06:00Um, I'm going to say let's do it.
06:02All right.
06:03That'll work, all right?
06:03Good.
06:04All right on, Noel.
06:05I was kind of kidding.
06:06My dad's going to be pissed.
06:07I know.
06:08That's why you've got to have my back on this.
06:10All right.
06:10I will, but you've got to tell him because you're older and I'm too young to die.
06:15All right.
06:16Oh, are you kidding me?
06:20This is really going to be a challenge.
06:22I need it like yesterday.
06:24And Rick can't know a thing about it.
06:25So you ready?
06:26I'm ready.
06:39Man, that bar was bad ass.
06:41I hope you guys are sober.
06:42As far as you know.
06:43Is it heavy?
06:44It's not light.
06:46It's a computing scale and you know why they call it that, right?
06:49Because it computed stuff.
06:51All right.
06:52It computed the price of the product that it was weighing.
06:55Each one of these were codes for a product.
06:57Like a 19 would have been ground round steak.
07:01So you just look at the 19 once you get to the poundage.
07:04It would give you the price right there.
07:06So does it work?
07:07Um, not really.
07:09Making it work is the hardest part.
07:12Hold that up in the air.
07:14Oh, it's jammed up.
07:16This is supposed to spin.
07:18And it's got a lot of nickel to be done here.
07:20So what'd you quote?
07:22Well, I quoted him $5,400 for the full restoration.
07:25Okay.
07:26And he wasn't sure.
07:27So he said he'd throw us a party.
07:29Because of that, I went down to $4,500.
07:34So what you're saying is that you lowered the price to have a party?
07:38Definitely.
07:39100%.
07:39You better hope that we make budget on this.
07:41Because if we don't, this is coming out of you guys' pocket.
07:44Not the rest of the crew.
07:45YouTube.
07:46A f***ing party?
07:48I can't believe this.
07:49God, he's a buzzkill.
07:50I got your back, but you really need to figure this out.
08:01Nice.
08:02Oh, yeah.
08:04You ready or what?
08:04Ready to turn this down?
08:06Oh, s***.
08:08Oh, my God.
08:09Are you okay?
08:10No, but that'll wake you up in the morning.
08:13Let's get this baby torn down.
08:17Look at that.
08:19Road rash.
08:21Road rash.
08:21Road rash in it.
08:22Bradley, I feel like you could be a triner.
08:24I mean, you got that little different vibe going on.
08:26But I'd want a glass eye, you know?
08:28I'd want to look through like a glass eye.
08:30Really, you can't look through a glass eye.
08:32If you have a glass eye, that means you have no eye.
08:33I look really like a stepbrother, but we would get this done a lot quicker if I didn't have
08:38to listen to all this bull****.
08:39Dude, like a stepbrother.
08:41I am your stepbrother.
08:44I wonder if the Freemasons have a theme song.
08:48Dude, I heard that they, like, meet up in caves and, like, dress in like...
08:53What?
08:53That's why I get all my mail sent to a P.O. box.
08:58Why?
08:59Some Freemasons can't come find you.
09:02Alright, if you want to take back wheel off, front wheel off, and the chain off, then we'll
09:06be good.
09:07That's good.
09:09Shrine you later.
09:10I'm going for one more ride.
09:13I'm in the Shrine Club, baby.
09:25Alright, let's dig into it.
09:26I've got to work with you?
09:27Yeah.
09:28I'm going to oversee this whole thing.
09:29I'm going to make sure everything goes smooth.
09:30Stay out of the way.
09:31You're going to see some dust fly.
09:32All I'm hoping is that we tear this down.
09:35There isn't any huge surprises.
09:36Otherwise, it might come out of my pocket.
09:39That looks like we've got a broken spring.
09:40That's probably why it wasn't weighing, right?
09:43He said it was kind of off-calibrated.
09:44This one's good, though.
09:45I'd like to get this insert out.
09:58Careful, Kyle.
09:59That thing's over a hundred years old.
10:06I punched a hole in this thing when I was pulling it out.
10:08Are you kidding me?
10:09Have fun redoing that.
10:11Rick cannot know about this.
10:13He'll be so pissed and I'll be on the hook for it.
10:16I've got to figure out a way to get it fixed and fix it fast.
10:20Don't look at me.
10:21Damn it.
10:23Fonz.
10:23Yes, sir.
10:24How's it going on the Continental Motor?
10:26Yeah.
10:27Fonzie's putting a ton of hours on this Continental Motor
10:30for the Shriner minibike.
10:31Getting this original motor to work is everything.
10:35Fonzie says he's got it ready, but I need to go in and check it out for myself.
10:38Let's go.
10:39See what happens.
10:41One, two.
10:44Nope.
10:45It's not making any sound, Fonz.
10:47Why ain't it firing?
10:48F***.
10:55Hold on, hold on.
10:56It doesn't sound like it's...
10:57Sound like no spark.
10:58We know the motor's got gas and has good compression, but it's still not starting.
11:03It seems like the ignition system is broken, but to be sure we need to pull out the spark plug
11:08and see if it's firing.
11:09If there's no spark, that means we're out of luck.
11:14No spark.
11:16Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing.
11:18This Continental Motor, this is really, really rare.
11:21There's no parts online.
11:22There's no motors online.
11:24If we can't make this motor work, we're in a world of hurt.
11:34Um, I wonder if it's the ignition.
11:37Is the points moving?
11:39Oh, yeah, they're moving.
11:41Fonz and I are trying to get a spark in this old minibike motor.
11:44Without spark, it won't run.
11:46And without the original Continental Motor, the project is not complete.
11:49If there's no spark, then we have some kind of electronic issue.
11:53Either the points are bad, this condenser could be bad.
11:56Nobody's got no parts for that Continental.
11:59Nobody.
12:00Can we fix the points?
12:01Well, no, we cannot fix those, but I got a good idea.
12:04I don't know if you like it.
12:05Maybe we can put electronic ignition on it.
12:07Let's at least get it and see if we can get some spark out of it and see if that
12:11is our problem.
12:11The original ignition system in this motor is kaput, but we might be able to replace it with a newer
12:17electronic system.
12:18If that works, we can at least save the engine.
12:21That's an electronic ignition.
12:23That's electronic ignition.
12:26We just got to connect the ignition to the lead on the spark plug.
12:30Okay.
12:31If that gives the spark, it'll be a miracle, Ponzi.
12:35Oh, you got it.
12:36You got spark.
12:37Oh, you.
12:38Now we got spark.
12:39Hopefully, that's our last hurdle.
12:41All we got to do now is put the spark plug in and see if it runs.
12:46More.
12:50Yeah.
12:55That sounds awesome.
12:56Good job.
12:57So now I need you to tear it all apart again so that we can paint the whole thing, and
13:02then you got to reassemble it and pray to God it works again.
13:05Nice.
13:06Yes.
13:08Hey, Ted.
13:09Hey, Ron.
13:10I need your help, man.
13:11Oh, no.
13:12What do we got?
13:12We were pulling apart the scale, and it got ripped.
13:17Well, let's have a look.
13:19That is complicated.
13:21This is a hundred-year-old paper, so he wants to keep it original.
13:24Okay.
13:24This is really going to be a challenge.
13:26I mean, it's very old, so it won't be invisible, but, I mean, you're not going to see it that
13:30closely anyway, are you?
13:31It needs to be perfect, because you have a magnifying glass on that exact spot.
13:37A magnifying glass.
13:39Okay.
13:39Well, that just adds another level of difficulty.
13:42Anything else you want to heap on there to make it trickier?
13:45Well, there actually is a couple of concerns.
13:47I need it like yesterday.
13:48And Rick can't know a thing about it.
13:51All right?
13:52Thanks, Ted.
13:53You're...
13:54Well, I guess you're welcome.
13:57I'm using rice paper because it has long, strong, flexible fibers, and it doesn't turn yellow with age.
14:03I've never had to do anything round or as old as this scale drum.
14:07I just hope this works.
14:14Ron, I met Noel in the parking lot.
14:16What are you doing out here?
14:16You know, I've got a lot riding on this, man.
14:18I've got to make sure it looks beautiful and perfect.
14:20Good to see you, Ron.
14:21Good to see you again.
14:22After a hundred years of this thing being the same, I'm really nervous about this.
14:25All right.
14:26Okay, well, so in your head right now, you see what it used to look like, right?
14:29I got a picture.
14:30A hundred-year-old mercantile scale that has aged and was broken before.
14:36So you ready?
14:37I'm ready.
14:37One, two, three.
14:41Holy crap!
14:42Oh, my God!
14:43That's unbelievable!
14:45Dude, this is flippin' unbelievable.
14:48Is this the same scale?
14:50Yeah.
14:50I can't believe it.
14:54How in the world did you get it looking like this?
14:57We sent all this stuff out to get nickel-plated.
14:59It's all done like it would have been.
15:01Ted did all this art where he took and put all the gold in here, the filigree.
15:04All this art's been hand-done on there.
15:06The detail is amazing.
15:09The glass itself, we cleaned it all up, left all the scratches in.
15:13We didn't take any of the life out of it, the things that have touched it, the people
15:16that have touched it.
15:17The paper drum with all the numbers on it, it had a lot of cracks, distress.
15:22Ted ended up taking rice cloth and he glued all those cracks back together.
15:27There was a lot of them.
15:28And it even had a large tear in it.
15:33So you knew?
15:34How?
15:35Ted told me.
15:36So we came in under budget?
15:38We just squeaked by.
15:41Party on.
15:43All right, well, I had to grab something to see if this actually weighed.
15:46What do you got?
15:47They don't call me Ronnie on the spot for nothing.
15:49Okay, so he'd be in the store.
15:52On we go.
15:53Yeah.
15:54All right.
15:55There we got about 16 ounces, right?
15:58Get this up kind of like a diaper.
15:59You got your twisty tie.
16:01There you go.
16:02You got a nice little pouch of rice.
16:04All right.
16:05Is there anything else you need?
16:06Maybe some women.
16:07I got to keep all those for myself.
16:08Sorry about that.
16:10Well, it looks great.
16:11I'm sure everyone at the Pioneer Saloon is going to be really excited.
16:14Thanks, Ray.
16:15I'm excited.
16:16Thanks a lot.
16:17Thank you, Ray.
16:17We got a party to plan.
16:20Barbecue.
16:20All right.
16:22And big steaks.
16:23Oh, nice.
16:24Nice.
16:25I never heard that thing run before.
16:27Oh, wow.
16:29Where is everybody, guys?
16:30This is a party?
16:31I mean, this is what my $900 is going to?
16:48Can I just tell you how excited I am for this party?
16:51It's going to be so much fun.
16:52It's my money.
16:53It's fun.
16:53No, not only that.
16:55I mean, there's going to be barbecue, steaks maybe, beer.
16:59Please be a little excited.
17:00Please.
17:01Dude, I just don't have a lot of time for that.
17:04Yeah, babe.
17:04Chuck's here for the minibike.
17:05Oh, hey, Chuck.
17:06Hey, how you doing, Rick?
17:07Good to see you.
17:08Good seeing you.
17:09Yeah.
17:09So excited to see this?
17:10I'm just a little excited.
17:12All right.
17:12Well, Ron, you want to go get it for me?
17:14Bro, honestly, I have to plan this party.
17:16I have to get this thing.
17:17I've got a lot of stuff to do, all right?
17:18I'm sorry.
17:19You can handle it, okay?
17:21Party!
17:21Woo!
17:22Worthless.
17:23All right.
17:23So, um, okay.
17:25So, babe, just go ahead and take them over there.
17:27Okay.
17:27And I'll go get it.
17:28When I brought this thing in, it was missing parts.
17:30Had rust on it.
17:32Gas tank had a hole in it.
17:33We had no idea if it ran.
17:35So Rick did have his hands full trying to get that back together for me.
17:39It's very important to me that this minibike has the wow factor.
17:42I'm looking for a lot of pop.
17:45You hear that?
17:46That's not it.
17:48I never heard that thing run before.
17:55Oh, my God.
17:56Look at that.
17:59Oh, wow.
18:00Enjoy.
18:01Thank you, Kelly.
18:03What a great job, Rick.
18:06Fantastic.
18:08Oh, man.
18:09Look at it.
18:11And you got the original motor in it.
18:12That didn't look that good when it came from the factory, I'll bet, back in 63.
18:16It's over and above what I expected to be done with it.
18:20Wow.
18:20You got the pop on it.
18:22I'll tell you that.
18:23Pretty nice bike.
18:24Yep.
18:25Pretty nice bike.
18:26Actually, this bike, this is called a Simplex.
18:28Right.
18:28It's what this, I figured that out by tearing it apart.
18:30It's about a 1963 sportsman.
18:32This is a rare bike.
18:34It wasn't starting because there was a points issue.
18:37We ended up putting an electronic point system in there.
18:40I mean, it's about this big.
18:41Put that in there and just wire to it.
18:42Boom.
18:43Fires every time.
18:44Oh, wow.
18:45Great.
18:45So it's all inside of it.
18:46You can't really see it.
18:47We took all the fenders, the tanks, cleaned the tank out and everything.
18:51We had a lot of welds down in here that were bad, so we cleaned those all up.
18:55These shocks down inside here.
18:57I was riding.
18:57It's very comfortable.
18:58I mean, this is like a Harley designed to where it's got that springer rear end.
19:02Right.
19:03So we gold-plated those so it'll last forever.
19:05I chromed all the wheels for aluminum, so we polished them, but then we still chrome-plated
19:08them so you don't have to get down there and shine them out.
19:11The springs for the front end, gold-plated those.
19:13Brake cables, throttle cables are new.
19:16Headlights on side there.
19:17It all works.
19:18Right.
19:19And then the horn.
19:22It's fun to ride.
19:23It's very cool.
19:24Rick, I knew it was going to turn out good, but I didn't know it was going to turn out
19:28this good.
19:29We'll pull the brakes.
19:30Jocko's going to ride it.
19:31Yeah, that's great.
19:31And I'll tell you what, we're building a new temple in Ohio.
19:33Uh-huh.
19:34And they're making room for this bike when the new temple's done.
19:38Nice.
19:38And realizing the job that I think it's going to do, help bring in money for an excellent
19:42cause.
19:43You get emotional.
19:44You get emotional.
19:45You can't help it.
19:47I think that giving does that.
19:49Yeah.
19:49It's from parts.
19:50You feel it.
19:51Appreciate it very much.
19:53It was worth the journey.
19:58You can't go wrong with steak and potatoes, man.
20:00I'm loving it.
20:01Is anyone else coming?
20:03Of course.
20:04Of course they are.
20:05It's not a frickin' date with you, dude.
20:07Hey, where is everybody, guys?
20:09This is a party?
20:10Yeah, it is.
20:12I mean, this is what my $900 is going to?
20:15Sit down and get yourself a beer.
20:17We're all good.
20:20All right!
20:21Harry, come on!
20:22Come on!
20:25Hell yeah!
20:29Now we're cuckoo!
20:30Hold on.
20:31Now watch this.
20:32Bring the beers!
20:38Oh, yeah.
20:38That's beautiful.
20:40Leonard, you want to do a shot with me?
20:41Okay.
20:42Okay.
20:43Now drink it all.
20:43Drink it all.
20:45You're always ready to go back.
20:47Yeah!
20:49Ron lives for the party.
20:50But Ron really came through.
20:52I mean, this party is absolutely a fantastic deal.
20:56All the guys are having a good time.
20:57There's drinking.
20:58Woo!
21:04Ron's having fun!
