00:00Coming up on American Restoration.
00:02This thing is in bad shape.
00:04Like to save it if we can.
00:05It's like a member of the family.
00:07I don't say no.
00:08I've never said no.
00:09This is probably the moment I say no.
00:13They're Lamborghini style hinges.
00:15So all that weight is gonna be on this thing right here.
00:19I mean, it works on a Lamborghini.
00:20Why won't it work on a Torino?
00:22You know, we're gonna be working day and night on this thing.
00:24We've gotta get this Philco stereo looking and sounding like new in less than a week.
00:30And here it goes.
00:31Ah!
00:32What'd you do?
00:36Across this country, five shops are breathing new life into classic American designs.
00:42From rusted out Mustangs to broken down Harleys.
00:47And everything in between.
00:50Each job has a story.
00:52Love these things.
00:54Woo!
00:57This is American Restoration.
01:10This is the place?
01:12Find out.
01:16There's a trail in the woods.
01:18We're not gonna get in there with the truck.
01:21Yeah, we better get out and take a look.
01:27So our good friend Brian calls us up.
01:29He's got a 72 Torino that he wants to have restored.
01:32He didn't give me an address.
01:33He gave me GPS coordinates, which right off the bat is throwing up red flags.
01:37I don't know, man.
01:39Doesn't look like a good place to store a Torino.
01:41Are you kidding me?
01:43Oh, man.
01:44He was a little off on his prediction of how restorable this thing is.
01:48Wow.
01:50Look at this thing.
01:51We definitely got our work cut out for us.
01:56This Torino was Brian's car in high school.
01:58And he put all kinds of work into it.
02:00I mean, this was his baby.
02:01Unfortunately, after a really sad workplace accident, that led him to be paralyzed.
02:06You know, he had to give the car up.
02:08But now, after all these years, Brian has found his original Torino.
02:12And he wants us to be the ones to bring this thing back to life for him and get him
02:16back behind the steering wheel.
02:17So I'm honored to be a part of this job for him.
02:20The guy said it had a complete interior.
02:23Well, it's complete, all right.
02:25Complete with spiders and mud.
02:30There's no way Pete and I are pushing this car out of the woods.
02:33If I call up Keith and my brother Johnny, who owns an excavation company, to come over and give us
02:37a hand.
02:37This thing looks really rough.
02:39Somebody's done some work to this, so we're going to have to tear it all apart.
02:42There's electrical tape all over everything.
02:45Some weird, rotted-out steering wheel.
02:49Definitely some kind of giant bee just flew out of there.
02:52It looked like a bird.
02:54This Torino was a sweet ride in its day.
02:56I mean, it had a fully loaded trim package.
02:58It had a Ford V8.
02:59It was just a really nice car.
03:01That fastback Torino had that iconic Coke bottle body style.
03:05It's so cool.
03:06I mean, it's the same car that Clint Eastwood used in the movie Grand Torino.
03:10Is he serious about this?
03:11Yeah.
03:12This thing's ready to restore.
03:15Steve's always the optimist.
03:16The Torino's a rust bucket.
03:18Steve can see past all that.
03:20Sometimes his optimism creates more work for us, but he can envision what it can be.
03:25If you find a spot, me and Keith will pick the bumper up.
03:28You got it?
03:29You got it?
03:30Don't let go yet.
03:30There's Ed's under there.
03:31You're so okay.
03:57Saving old cars one day at a time.
04:12Hey, how are you?
04:13Good.
04:13Is Bodie in?
04:14Yes.
04:14Let me go get him.
04:15Okay.
04:15Thanks.
04:16Hey, Bodie.
04:20Hi, Bodie.
04:21My name's Howard.
04:22Howard, how are you doing?
04:23I've heard good things about you, and I brought a project over for you to take a look at.
04:25Awesome.
04:26Big project?
04:26Huge project.
04:27All right.
04:28Let's check it out.
04:28I love huge projects.
04:29When someone comes in the shop and they say they got a crazy big project for me, my juices
04:34start flowing.
04:37Oh, man.
04:38There it is.
04:39Boy, he wasn't exaggerating.
04:42This project is huge.
04:44I mean, man, look at this thing.
04:46Holy moly.
04:48This thing is in bad shape.
04:50I need some help.
04:51Gosh.
04:521950 bullet-nosed Studebaker, right?
04:54Right.
04:54I am president of the Los Angeles chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.
04:58This particular Studebaker has been in my family for 20 years.
05:01I'm ashamed I've let it deteriorate, and I haven't gotten around to fixing it, but I've
05:06now decided that it's time, and I thought Bodhi would be a good guy to do it.
05:09This is a rare one.
05:11Yep.
05:11This is the deluxe, right?
05:12Yes, it is.
05:13Commander.
05:14The Commander was the first car to basically have that bullet-nosed front end.
05:18Pretty much looks like an old World War II fighter plane to me.
05:22When the bullet-nosed came out, it was very futuristic.
05:25It was a one-of-a-kind, really unique in style.
05:28God, look at all of the rot everywhere.
05:33Oh, man.
05:34Looks like there was a fire inside of it, too.
05:37From the heater core, I bet you.
05:38Could be.
05:39Wow, Howard.
05:40Howard, this thing is in bad shape.
05:43I mean, seriously, for me to bring this thing back, you'd have more money in this thing
05:49than it would be worth at the end of the day.
05:51Like to save it if we can.
05:52It's like a member of the family.
05:54So it's kind of like a family heirloom.
05:57You know, looking at this thing, I don't say no.
06:03I've never said no.
06:05This is probably the moment I say no, because there's so much rot.
06:10It's not easy finding parts for these things.
06:14I wouldn't even know how to start estimating this job for you.
06:19My passion is bringing old Americonic back to life and improving on the original design
06:25when I can.
06:26But this thing is beyond restoration.
06:28I don't want to see the customer go bankrupt, bringing it back to life.
06:32I also don't like seeing things go to the scrapyard, so I'm going to have to figure out
06:36something to do with this thing.
06:38What if I was to kind of give it a new purpose?
06:42What did you have in mind?
06:43Maybe utilize parts.
06:45I mean, I could make some cool pieces of art out of this.
06:48It would at least save the spirit of it.
06:49Yeah, it would.
06:50You know, you could see it every day.
06:52We'd just be giving it new purpose, you know?
06:55You got anything going on in your house or anything right now?
06:57We're remodeling a bathroom, yeah.
06:59Really?
06:59Uh-huh.
07:00That gives me a pretty cool idea.
07:02What would you think if we were to cut the front of this off and make them sink out of
07:07it?
07:08Make it look like it's coming out of the wall?
07:09Definitely would be different.
07:11You got the bullet piece?
07:12Yeah, I've got it right here in the back of the truck.
07:13Most important part of the car?
07:15There you go.
07:16Oh, yeah.
07:17Look at that.
07:18That bullet nose is a very iconic front end.
07:21It's one of a kind.
07:22We can put a cool paint job on it.
07:24We'll drop a stainless steel sink in there.
07:27So what do you think?
07:28That's a very neat idea.
07:29Might take a little work with my wife, but...
07:32Yeah?
07:33You can convince her, though.
07:34She's not quite the Studebaker, not that I am.
07:37I mean, I could do the front end for, I don't know, five grand.
07:47Okay.
07:47Sounds good.
07:48Yeah, I appreciate it.
07:49Yeah.
07:50You can't save all of them.
07:51So you do the best you can and you save what you can.
07:54And in this case, if you save the memory of it, maybe that'll be good enough.
07:57I'm going to grab the guys and we're going to offload it and get started.
08:01Thanks, Howard.
08:02Yeah, I appreciate it.
08:18Hey, Kirk.
08:20Come here real quick.
08:23What do you think?
08:241950 bullet-nosed Studebaker.
08:26Customer wants to put it all back to original.
08:29It is in bad shape, as you can see.
08:33Yeah, just a little bit.
08:34What dirt hole did you drag it out of?
08:36This is a lot of work.
08:38I like to keep these guys on their toes, so I'm making them believe that this is a front-to
08:42-back restoration with a heart attack deadline.
08:44Doesn't look like there's anything left in here.
08:46That's where I'm going to need you, because we've got to have this thing turned around and back on the
08:52road in two weeks.
08:53That's not a lot of time.
08:55It's not going to happen.
08:56Very important high-end customer, we have to make this happen.
09:01Holy smokes.
09:04Yeah.
09:05Okay.
09:06Do you want to hear what we're really doing?
09:09So I don't have to fix all that?
09:14We're going to turn it into a sink.
09:16So we're going to basically cut this thing right here, and we're going to use the front portion, and we're
09:20going to make it look like it's coming out of the wall.
09:22We'll French in a stainless steel sink.
09:24You've got the bullet nose you're going to put back on.
09:26We'll put a nice paint job on it.
09:28Mitchell, I'm thinking you yank the motor trans.
09:30Get that thing out of there.
09:31Make some room for Kirk to get in there and start cutting.
09:33Kirk, work your magic.
09:35Good.
09:35Let's get her done.
09:36No problem.
09:37Sweet.
09:38Cody's got a good eye for turning junk into useful, purposeful things.
09:43Nothing gets wasted around here.
09:45Start cutting these tacks off, and why don't you grab the cherry picker, and we'll get it out.
09:51Since we're only using the front end of this food maker for the sink, I'm having Mitchell and Kirk pull
09:55out the old engine and transmission so we can get ready to cut the nose off this thing.
10:04Yeah.
10:06Let's keep going.
10:10All right.
10:11I think we're stuck on something down there.
10:13Yeah, I think the transmission's stuck.
10:15Let me go down there and see what's up.
10:20All right, I think you're good.
10:22Let's go up a right.
10:23Whoa!
10:25Let's go.
10:32All right, I think you're good.
10:33Let's go up a right.
10:35Whoa!
10:37Let's go.
10:40Oh, are you all right, man?
10:42What the just happened?
10:43Just let go and dropped.
10:46You all right, man?
10:47Yeah.
10:48I think I saw my life flash before my eyes.
10:51Mitchell and Kirk are pulling the engine and transmission out of Studebaker for Howard's sink.
10:56I don't know if the hydraulics just went out on the cherry picker.
10:59I don't know if it was a miscommunication.
11:01All I know is something serious just happened.
11:03I thought the whole world was coming apart.
11:07Let's give it another shot, man.
11:09I mean, we got to get it out of here.
11:10I can't tell you how relieved I am that Mitchell wasn't hurt.
11:13He is so lucky that that cross member was there to catch that motor because there's no telling what would
11:18have happened to him if that thing would have fallen all the way through.
11:21Let her down softly.
11:22Mitchell, stand back.
11:26Easy.
11:29Perfect.
11:31I'm going to look into getting a new cherry picker because this old thing has just had it, and I
11:35don't want to take any more chances.
11:36I'm going to start laying out the lines of where we're going to cut the front of the Studebaker off
11:40to turn this thing into a sink.
11:42Yeah, I think we'll just cut out the square area.
11:45Yeah.
11:46The sink will sit in there.
11:47Boom, cut that thing.
12:08Look at that.
12:11Sweet.
12:14I love these things.
12:16They're so ugly.
12:17They're beautiful.
12:18It's a face only a mother would love.
12:19Yeah, for sure.
12:20And I love them.
12:21I feel so bad for doing this to this car, but what do you do?
12:27Turn it into a sink.
12:41My name is Bob Halliday, and some people think I'm stuck in the 50s.
12:45I'm the owner of Bob's Garage, where we breathe new life into the past one piece at a time.
12:51We use old world craftsmanship to revive pieces of forgotten Americana.
12:55We are the best at what we do, but only because of the people that work here.
13:00If you want things done right, you come to us.
13:06Let me help you with that.
13:07Oh, thank you, Bob.
13:09Boy, is this a beauty.
13:10Not right now it's not, but hopefully you're going to make it that way.
13:14Yeah, it's a little hard to look at right now, but it's very stylish.
13:17My name is Amy.
13:18My name is Jeff.
13:19And we're bringing Bob a...
13:211959 Philco Hi-Fi Stereophonic record player.
13:25Where'd you get this?
13:26My aunt gave this to me.
13:28We used to listen to this as children all the time, and it just quit working a good while back.
13:32And I really would like to restore it and kind of restore some of those memories that we had as
13:36a family.
13:36This is really cool.
13:38This was really fancy in the day.
13:41They call this space race design.
13:43This was the style.
13:45That's where you put your stack of records.
13:47There's for your 45, and this is the switch.
13:50You can play 33 and a third, 45s, or 78s.
13:54Late 50s, early 60s, television was in its infancy, and everybody had a record player.
14:00This Philco is an early stereo, and this was pretty much a gathering place for family listening.
14:06Man, I haven't seen one of these, and, well, I'm not going to tell you.
14:11We would love to see this thing come back to life for us.
14:14Complete cosmetic and mechanical restoration.
14:17That's correct.
14:17Get this thing back to looking like the day it came out of the store.
14:20Jeff, that'll be beautiful.
14:21I would like to let my aunt hear this once again.
14:24We have a family reunion coming up.
14:26Oh.
14:26And I would really love to unveil this for her.
14:29Ooh, what a great idea.
14:31When is this?
14:32Two weeks.
14:35This, you, this is a lot of work.
14:38This is a lot of work.
14:40There's a lot of wood issues.
14:41We can't play it, so I don't know if the speakers are blown.
14:44Yeah, I don't know.
14:45I haven't heard it in years.
14:46There's something I'm worried about, is that needle.
14:48Sure.
14:49Hopefully we can find that needle.
14:51We'll have to make sure we can get the proper tubes to put in it.
14:55We'll look at the wiring.
14:55Something this old usually has bad wiring in it.
14:59Rub.
15:00As Bob's pointing out the flaws, I'm really just adding up the money in my head.
15:03And it really is only coming down to me saying, how high will she allow me to go?
15:10Yeah.
15:12It's not going to be cheap because it's a lot of work, and we're going to have to move some
15:15things around so we can get it ready for your party.
15:17I'm thinking $1,500.
15:24And you can have it in two weeks?
15:25I can unveil it for my aunt?
15:27We'll do it.
15:28You got a deal.
15:29Thanks, Jeff.
15:30This is going to be a fun thing.
15:31Y'all just leave it right there, and I'll walk you out.
15:33Okay.
15:34All right.
15:34You know, Jeff and Amy only gave us two weeks.
15:37That's nuts.
15:38But there's a sentimental attachment to this.
15:41There's a family gathering.
15:42And it would be so nice to present this to his aunt.
15:46When we have the opportunity to do these kind of things, we really like to do them.
15:50We all have families, and we know how important they are.
16:04Go!
16:05I'm going.
16:06John, steer it.
16:08I'm trying.
16:09Out of here.
16:10We just finished dragging Brian's Torino out of the swamp.
16:13We got it unloaded in the shop.
16:14Now we're looking this thing over, and it's obviously in terrible shape.
16:17Just an enormous project.
16:19I mean, there's tons and tons of work to do on it.
16:21We've got Brian coming over.
16:22Check this thing out.
16:23We're going to come up with a game plan for the restoration on it.
16:26So this is your car, huh?
16:29Oh, God.
16:30Is that how you remember it?
16:32No, but it's good to see it out again.
16:35This is the actual vehicle I bought in 1978 and drove for a couple years until I was injured in
16:421980 and eventually sold.
16:45I've had some fun in this car, and it was a little better shape in my memory.
16:49I bet.
16:50But it's exciting to think about getting into it and driving again.
16:53Brian's able to drive his van with the assistance of special hand controls that operate the gas and the brake.
16:58And we're hoping that we can apply that same equipment to his terino.
17:02Transferring in and out of it, it's a little bit more difficult, of course, because I have to get out
17:06of the chair.
17:06The doors sometimes pose a problem.
17:09Maybe we can make it open wider so I can get the chair closer to the seat.
17:13You might be able to do swivel seats.
17:14Yeah, those mid-'70s Monte Carlos had really cool bucket seats.
17:18Yeah, my friend had one.
17:19I like that.
17:20We could redo the whole suspension setup in this car and make it an air ride.
17:23Basically, you could push a button, and we could drop the whole car down.
17:27Being a little bit lower than the chair, I can just drop in, and when I get back out, raise
17:31back up.
17:31Yeah.
17:32The ride's pretty good.
17:33The ride's great.
17:34It's heartbreaking to see it in such rough shape, but I'm confident that you can bring it back to its
17:39old glory.
17:40I'm kind of scared how much it's going to cost.
17:43Lots of things are going to need to be replaced.
17:45Your metal work is going to be extensive.
17:48With a restoration this big, and then on top of that, we're adding all these custom features, I mean, you'll
17:54be close to 100.
17:57I just don't want to go too far over budget.
18:00We want it to be something that you're going to enjoy, and you're going to enjoy the process of us
18:03restoring this car.
18:04I look forward to it.
18:05I'm really excited.
18:06So let's head into the office.
18:08We'll write this up, get these guys tearing it apart, and we'll start making this happen for you.
18:11All right.
18:16Let's see if it comes on.
18:19Nope.
18:19Got nothing.
18:20We're in a pickle.
18:22We're in a pickle.
18:23We're in a pickle.
18:26We're in a pickle.
18:29All right, let's start tearing this thing apart.
18:31We're not saving this seat, are we?
18:35That side's loose.
18:36There, that side's loose.
18:38This 72 Torino that we're going to restore for Brian is a piece of junk, really.
18:43I mean, there's really no other way to put it.
18:44On top of all the restoration work that has to happen in this car, we still have to make this
18:49thing completely handicap accessible.
18:51The whole thing has to be completely customized to make it easy for him to get out of his wheelchair
18:56and into the car.
18:57The seat's got to actually pivot, just like the old Monte Carlo seats did.
19:03Your doors are going to be the real challenge.
19:05What if we could actually open the door, but then power it right up and out of the way over
19:09the fender?
19:10It's not going to be easy.
19:12Got this door almost ready to come off.
19:13Can you give me a hand?
19:14Yep.
19:15Let's get it off.
19:16Yeah, you better grab the front.
19:22Let's get this thing torn apart.
19:24Once we've got the body all deconstructed, the glass out, the interior out, doors off, fenders off, we're going to
19:30get it sandblasted.
19:31While the crew is finishing up tearing down the Torino, I went off and I got a little something special
19:36for Brian's door.
19:41Hey.
19:42What's up, gentlemen?
19:46I found a solution to Brian getting in and out of the car.
19:50They're Lamborghini-style hinges.
19:52So they're supposed to swing out and up, huh?
19:55These bad boys are going to go in place of the stock hinges.
19:59This has got to go up against this door, I would assume.
20:02Right, yeah.
20:04So all that weight is going to be on this thing right here.
20:08I mean, it works on a Lamborghini.
20:09Why won't it work on a Torino?
20:11It's going to have to.
20:12So I think we can put, like, a little electric actuator.
20:15He just pushes a button.
20:16Lifts right up out of the way.
20:17So it doesn't have to be a real heavy motor or something big and bulky in there.
20:21As soon as it comes up, it'll Lambo right up over the fender out of the way.
20:24Allowing him to get in close enough of his wheelchair to get in the swivel seats we're going to put
20:30in.
20:30That's pretty neat.
20:31There's a lot of work to do in this car.
20:33Let's start cutting this thing apart and get it sandblasted.
20:55Before we can do any metal work on this Torino, we have to have it sandblasted.
20:59So we're bringing it over to my buddy Dave.
21:00He's going to get it all stripped down for us, and then we'll get it back to the shop.
21:03What do you think of this thing, man?
21:06It's a rot file.
21:07It's a rot is bad, isn't it?
21:08When you're restoring an old car, you have to strip it down to bare metal to guarantee that your work's
21:13going to last forever.
21:14I mean, that's the way that you have to do it.
21:16Sandblasting gives you a really good surface that's etched and ready for epoxy primer.
21:21Wow, so what are we doing?
21:22What are we doing?
21:23I'm going to blast it.
21:24Yep.
21:25We'll get it back to the shop.
21:26I'm going to weld on the new corridors, get the rockers done, get all this rot work done, all our
21:30fabricating.
21:31Okay.
21:32Do you want to go first?
21:33I'll turn it on.
21:33Yeah.
21:43We're using this sandblaster at 65 to 100 psi, which is a real low pressure for sandblasting,
21:49but we want to make sure that we keep the integrity of this sheet metal, especially a big area like
21:53a roof.
21:54You've got to be really, really careful when you're doing this.
22:05Now that the Torino is stripped down to bare metal, we still have a ton of work left ahead of
22:09us.
22:10Metal fabrication, body work, paint work, brand new Ford V8, new transmission.
22:14I mean, the list goes on and on and on.
22:16I'd like to say that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but the reality of
22:21it is that we're just getting into the tunnel.
22:33You know we're going to be working day and night on this thing.
22:36We've got customers coming in the door every day presenting us new projects, and we have to keep the ball
22:41rolling.
22:41Fortunately, we have Gary and Kirk working on this Philco stereo because we've got to get this thing looking and
22:48sounding like new in less than a week.
22:51I really hope this works because I don't want to have to try to re-engineer that.
22:55Trick's going to be just getting all of these old nuts out of there.
22:58I usually use power tools on these, but I like doing it by hand, especially when it comes to working
23:03with wood.
23:04Yeah.
23:05Because that way you get a feel of, you know, how tight the screw needs to be.
23:09They've used brass hardware on here, and the screws are brass.
23:12And luckily, they haven't been stripped out, and brass is pretty soft.
23:15It tends to do that.
23:17We've got to make sure that we get all these things gathered up.
23:21Keeping as many original parts as possible really helps the piece hold its integrity.
23:28All right, we are just about done with this tear down.
23:30We've got a plain old box now.
23:33Time for me to go get this cabinet sanded.
23:36Kirk's going to do all the sanding and refinishing, and Gary's got to take the electronics and find out what's
23:42fried, what needs to be rewired, et cetera.
23:44We like to use our original parts in everything that we do.
23:47You get more of that original feeling, that original authenticity.
24:01There it goes.
24:09All right.
24:15Ow!
24:34What'd you do?
24:35I shocked the hell out of myself.
24:38You all right?
24:39Yeah.
24:40What are you guys doing?
24:41Taking a nap out here with all the lights out?
24:43Kirk, hit the breaker, would you?
24:44Y'all okay?
24:45Yeah.
24:46I touched it here somewhere.
24:48Don't do it again.
24:51So Gary's checking the transistors and the diodes in this 59 Filco that we're doing for Jeff and Amy.
24:57He blows all the lights out in the building.
24:59He must have touched two live components and created a short.
25:03Let's see if it comes on.
25:07Nope.
25:09Nope.
25:10Nothing.
25:11Got nothing.
25:12Well, we've got serious issues.
25:14You're going to have to troubleshoot every wire in here.
25:17We're in a pickle.
25:19We're in a pickle.
25:20I'm not trying to kill you.
25:22I just, you just don't need mistakes like this.
25:26Oh!
25:40We've been making a lot of progress with the Studebaker.
25:43After all the metal work was done, Mitchell assembled all the parts and he cut the hole out in the
25:47hood for the sink.
25:48We fit it in and I continued to work on the back section.
25:53Next, Alex gave it a killer paint job.
25:57And he's doing all the detail work on it to make this classic front end really shine.
26:03Alex!
26:05What's happening, man?
26:07How are we looking?
26:08Well, it's looking pretty.
26:10Looking pretty, but...
26:11He's going to be over at the shop any minute.
26:13So, not only you got to finish, but we got to get this over there.
26:16How long do you think you have?
26:17Like 15 minutes or so?
26:1920, 20 minutes.
26:2015 it is.
26:21I'll tell him.
26:22Please, do as much as you can.
26:24Please.
26:28Rápido, Juanito, porque ya vine ciente.
26:48There he is.
26:49Hey, Howard.
26:49Hey, Bodie.
26:50How you doing?
26:50Doing good.
26:51How you doing?
26:52Good.
26:52How's my sink?
26:54Sink's...
26:54It's doing great.
26:56Good.
26:56I hope you love it.
26:57Can't hardly wait to see you.
26:58Hey, I'm Bodie.
26:58I'm Jim.
26:59How are you?
26:59How you doing, Jim?
26:59Good to meet you.
27:00Well, check this thing out, huh?
27:01Yeah.
27:02They had a style of their own.
27:04They really did.
27:05It's a lot of comments when you drive on the road.
27:07Nobody knows what a Studebaker is anymore.
27:09I think the 55 is a very cool car.
27:11Isn't the 55 President Studebaker actually the luxury model?
27:15Yeah.
27:15They only made the bullet nose for basically a year and a half, and they went to this dramatic
27:19change, which is now the fish mouth look on the 55 President.
27:23This thing's really, really cool.
27:25You know, I kind of look up Studebaker.
27:28As a car builder, you're always trying to come up with the next new thing that nobody's
27:31doing.
27:32Studebaker was always setting the bar by being different.
27:35It taught me to be bold, to make a statement.
27:37When you're building a car, be different.
27:39Do you want to come check out and see what we did with your Studebaker?
27:43First time I came here, I really wanted my Studebaker restored, and I had hopes of
27:47Bodie could do it.
27:48And I suspect he could have done it if we wanted to spend enough time and money and it made
27:51any sense.
27:52But I think he came up with a great idea, and I can't wait to see the results.
27:56There it is.
27:58Wow.
27:59Look at that.
28:00Oh, yeah.
28:02Very nice.
28:03That's really nice.
28:03Unbelievable.
28:05Nice color.
28:06What color do you call that?
28:07We actually made the color, so there is no name.
28:10Oh.
28:11Basically went off of what Howard was telling us, how he was doing the bathroom.
28:14He was going for kind of a contemporary look.
28:17Usually these are chrome, we made them black.
28:20I really like the fact that he decided to paint the chrome in black.
28:24It makes a nice contrast with the maroon, and it's not as flashy as chrome would have been.
28:29Very tasteful.
28:30There was still a lot of rust repair that we had to do on this thing to bring it back
28:33to
28:34life.
28:34So it is actually the front end.
28:36It's all the original metal work, all the original molding pieces.
28:41My favorite part, hit a switch, and bam.
28:45Wow.
28:45Look at that.
28:46Right?
28:47Quite a conversation piece.
28:49Definitely.
28:49It is.
28:50We put a stainless steel sink in it.
28:52Even used the hood ornament for you.
28:53And you just add a little water.
28:56Oh, look at that.
28:57Got yourself a cool waterfall.
28:59Oh, that's really neat.
28:59Wash your hands.
29:00Studebaker Club's going to like this one.
29:02I'm telling you, I'm a huge fan of Studebaker.
29:04This is my favorite front end of all time.
29:07I love it.
29:08Yeah.
29:08And if your wife doesn't love it, and you've got no place to put it, give me a call.
29:12I'll come get it.
29:13I'll rip the sink out of my house, and I'll put this in.
29:16You did an incredible job.
29:17It's repurposed.
29:18It's going to be useful again.
29:20Great job.
29:21Clark, I think.
29:21No, thanks, guys.
29:22I appreciate that.
29:23Well, hey, why don't we put it in the back of my truck, and I'll follow you to your house
29:26and help you unload it.
29:28Good.
29:28Very good.
29:28Thanks, guys.
29:29Very nice.
29:29Thanks, Bodie.
29:30Great job.
29:33My baby already?
29:35It looks awesome.
29:35You want to see it?
29:36Yeah.
29:37Hey, PD.
29:41Oh, yeah.
29:43Real nice.
29:57This is the final push to get this Philco stereo finished.
30:01Gary fried all the wiring, but he replaced all the transistors, all the diodes, and I think
30:07at this point, we're good.
30:10It's working great.
30:12Super.
30:13Kirk has done some awesome work on the wood cabinet.
30:16Now he's working on the grill cover.
30:18Oh, with that old stuff and then with the new.
30:20All this so we can get this Philco stereo to Jeff, Amy, and his aunt at their family reunion
30:26this afternoon.
30:27Looks great.
30:40Bob.
30:40Hey, Bob.
30:41What's going on?
30:42Good to see you.
30:43You, too.
30:44How are you?
30:44How are you?
30:44How are you doing, Jeff?
30:45I've got all the family inside.
30:47My aunt's here, and she doesn't know.
30:49She has no idea.
30:50This is going to be fun.
30:51Let's get it in the house.
30:52Yeah.
30:53Awesome.
30:58All right, everybody, come over.
31:00We've got a surprise for everyone.
31:02Aunt Brenda, your nephew brought us this and told us that we needed to fix it because it
31:09belonged to you, his favorite aunt, and that this was very important to you.
31:15We hurried like hell to get this done, and I'm just tickled to death that we could present
31:21it to you today.
31:22I'm ready.
31:25Oh, wow.
31:27Hey.
31:28Oh, my goodness.
31:30Check it out.
31:32Oh, wow.
31:33We replaced all the wiring.
31:35We replaced those old paper speakers with modern ones, and we even got that turntable
31:40to work.
31:41We refinished the wood cabinet inside and out with maple stain so it would match the original
31:47veneer.
31:48I can proudly say that this stereo is significantly better than it was when it was brand new in
31:551959.
31:56So what do you think?
31:57I love it, but I want to hear it.
31:59What we have, you're going to remember.
32:04Wow.
32:04I can't believe it.
32:06It sounds great.
32:07It does.
32:23When he pulled off the sheet, I was like stepping back in time, way back to when Jeff was a
32:28little
32:28boy, and I played my records on there.
32:31It was really exciting to see it brought back to life.
32:34It plays again, and for years to come, they'll listen to it.
32:38Their kids will listen to it, and they'll always be here.
32:41It's just amazing.
32:58Over the last few weeks, we've all put a ton of hours in on Brian's Torino, and it's coming
33:03along great.
33:04Now, for the fun part, we can design the paint scheme.
33:06Steven.
33:08Here you go.
33:09Diner seats are about done.
33:11Well, that looks good.
33:12A lot of flake in this, baby.
33:13They look very 50s, don't they?
33:15They look very 50s retro.
33:17You know, I'm kind of thinking about this color.
33:21They're not changing.
33:22I'm trying to come up with a color for the Torino, and I'm thinking something along this
33:27line, but I don't want to just do the green.
33:30I mean, we're going for a high-end custom car here.
33:33Just the green isn't going to look right.
33:35Are you talking about two-tone?
33:37I don't know about two-tone, but it needs like a color change in effect or something.
33:42You know, just something wild.
33:44When you look at it, I mean, I want people to be like, I never saw that color before.
33:47You know, kind of like Wiley's fur.
33:49Brown and tan, a little bit of yellow, a little gold.
33:53That'd be pretty wild.
33:54All right, you don't need this, do you?
33:56No.
33:56They're done.
33:57All right.
33:58Come on, Wiley.
33:59Let's go.
34:00Good boy.
34:01We got to look at your fur in the paint room.
34:06All right.
34:08So we've got our mid-coat color mixed up, ready to roll.
34:11Torino's looking awesome, but it's black with a red pearl.
34:13So now, this Ember Glow mid-coat is going to give us the wild color change in effect that
34:19we're looking for.
34:19You can see all the weird milky colors in here right now.
34:22On top of that black, it's just going to give you green, yellow, maroon.
34:27It's going to be wild.
34:27So I'm going to get this in the gun, get four coats on the car, and then we'll start clearing.
34:57What you got, Beattie?
34:59Oh, we got the hand controls here.
35:00Awesome.
35:02Want to get them in?
35:03We're doing one of the last steps of this restoration, which is installing the hand
35:07controls.
35:08Brian would not be able to operate this car without these hand controls, so this is a
35:12very important part of this build.
35:14We're going to want this lever.
35:15Yep.
35:16Somewhere around here.
35:17Got to make sure we can clear the dash when he pushes it and also clear his knee when
35:21he throttles it, too.
35:23We'll move this arm out a little bit.
35:25I think it'll give him a little more leverage.
35:28Up just a little bit.
35:30There we go.
35:31This will be gas.
35:33So down will be his accelerator.
35:35Mm-hmm.
35:35Yep.
35:36There's a spring-loaded mechanism on the bottom that allows it to push the gas pedal and turn.
35:41Next will be the brake control.
35:44That should go right on either side of that.
35:50Yeah.
35:51See?
35:51Awesome.
35:53So there's brake.
35:57Cool.
35:57There's the throttle.
35:59Awesome.
36:00Let's get the seat in.
36:01All right.
36:01Yeah.
36:02Finish this thing up.
36:04When the Torino came into our shop, they had big, bulky bench seats, which were in terrible
36:09shape, and they were really no good for this project.
36:11We got swivel bucket seats, which not only look cool, they're going to be functional for
36:16him.
36:16He gets out of his wheelchair, sits in the seat, and he can swivel right into place in the
36:19car.
36:20They lock in, and he's ready to rock and roll.
36:29That looks good in there.
36:39I'll give her a try, Steve-o.
36:43Yeah, that works slick.
36:45Yeah, it does.
36:48Nice.
36:51Well, let's get this Lambo door on and keep Brian his car back.
37:01That's what I'm talking about.
37:02Squat it down.
37:03I don't recognize this car.
37:05I love it.
37:12How are we making it out, Petey?
37:13Just about ready to start working the hinge a little bit.
37:16It's never been done with a door this heavy.
37:18We're going to have to add these struts to help push the door up.
37:22This 72 Ford Torino door is a very heavy door.
37:26We wanted it to be a butterfly door setup, so that not only it would look really cool,
37:30it would work great for Brian to have a lot of room to get out of his wheelchair and into
37:33the car.
37:34So, we have to make all kinds of reinforcements to make the door work with that butterfly hinge.
37:40Thanks, man.
37:41Let's throw the door on.
37:41I think we're ready for the door.
37:43I'll get on the inside so I can get the first bolt started.
37:49Tip it up a little more.
37:52Right there.
37:56Tip the outside towards me.
37:58There you go.
37:59It's going to be this high.
38:04That's tight.
38:07I think that looks nice.
38:09Let's test it out.
38:13How's the lines look?
38:14Perfect.
38:18It's up just like regular.
38:25That is awesome.
38:27He's going to love that.
38:29Petey, hop out and check that thing out, man.
38:32How cool that makes the car look.
38:35I've been wanting to bet nobody's seen anything like that before.
38:38No.
38:39Not on a 72 Torino.
38:40Definitely not.
38:43This 72 Ford Torino is all done.
38:47Restored beautifully.
38:48Paint's done.
38:49Everything's working great.
38:52We're building him an awesome car.
38:54He's going to have this thing for the rest of his life.
38:56And it's just going to be really, really cool.
39:02What's going on, Brian?
39:03Hey, Steve.
39:04How you doing, man?
39:05Good.
39:06Good to see you.
39:07Is my baby already?
39:08It looks awesome.
39:09You want to see it?
39:09Yeah.
39:10It came out beautiful.
39:11This Torino was Brian's original car in high school.
39:14It means a lot to him.
39:16We pulled it out of the swamp.
39:17And now this thing is going to be a dream car.
39:20Hey, Petey.
39:22Hey, Petey.
39:28Oh, yeah.
39:31Real nice.
39:36That's what I'm talking about.
39:38Squat it down.
39:44I don't recognize this car.
39:46We've customized Brian's Torino from inside and out, starting with swivel seats, butterfly
39:52doors, power windows, remote control operated air ride system.
39:56It'll actually tilt the car sideways, lower it right to the ground.
40:00Then the icing on the cake, obviously, was the trico paint job that just sets this thing
40:04off.
40:04It's a black base coat with a red flake.
40:06And then we put this ember glow mid coat on it.
40:08It just gives you all the wild color change and effects and just makes it pop.
40:12I love it.
40:13I love the rims.
40:14Yeah, the wheels are nice.
40:15I got to see the engine, though.
40:17You got it?
40:18Oh, wow.
40:19Is that the stroker I wanted?
40:21351 Cleveland.
40:22This thing looks like an animal.
40:24The engine and transmission were rotted out.
40:26They were froze off.
40:27We put a brand new Ford V8 in there.
40:29That thing's got a ton of power.
40:31It looks really, really cool.
40:32And it's exactly what Brian wanted.
40:34And look at the door.
40:35What do you think about that, man?
40:37I love it.
40:38These are power Lambo door hinges we put on.
40:41Oh, that's going to make it easy for me to get in and out.
40:44Cool thing is that these actually open just like regular doors.
40:47We had to redesign the whole A-pillar and put electric motors and gas pistons, gas struts,
40:54to push this door up because this door is so heavy.
40:56And now you're going to just be able to push a button, and they power right up so you don't
41:00have to push or lift anything.
41:02Oh, I love it.
