00:00I've got an old milk truck you might be interested in.
00:02Made by a company called Divco.
00:04Coming up on American Restoration.
00:06It's a little different than what I had in mind.
00:08Just your size, Mitchell.
00:09You think it'll be a lot of fun with a motor in it.
00:11Woo-hoo!
00:13You said you were bringing a horse.
00:14I thought you were riding one in.
00:17I found this one at a flea market.
00:18Could you have brought me one in any worse condition?
00:21This is the best one I could find.
00:24It's a 1956 Willis.
00:26What do you think, guys?
00:28I think I need a tetanus shop.
00:33Yeah, we got a serious problem here, boys.
00:38Across this country, five shops are breathing new life into classic American designs.
00:44From rusted-out Mustangs to broken-down Harleys and everything in between, each job has a story.
00:54Love these things.
00:55Woo!
00:58This is American Restoration.
01:08Come on.
01:09That's good.
01:11Wow.
01:14Yeah.
01:15Hmm.
01:16What do you think, guys?
01:18I think I need a tetanus shop.
01:21Keith, Pete, this is Pat.
01:23Hi, Pat.
01:24You guys know Piggy Pat's Barbecue, don't you?
01:26Oh, yeah.
01:26That's Pat's place.
01:28We started Piggy Pat's Barbecue on our farm 22 years ago.
01:32And from the beginning, this truck has been there.
01:35It's 1956 Willis, the farm that we started Piggy Pat's Barbecue on, there's lots of memories, and it associate it
01:44with overcoming hard times.
01:46Whenever I saw the old Willis, it reminded me of those days.
01:50And it's an American icon, and I wanted to do something with it.
01:54It's just something that you don't see anymore.
01:57Actually, it's where the Jeep came from.
01:59It does make it a very cool piece of Americana.
02:02Yeah.
02:02Willis was originally produced for our military in World War II.
02:05That's where it got its name, Jeep.
02:07After the war, they became extremely popular, especially with our veterans, because they were the first four-wheel drive vehicle
02:14that was a consumer vehicle.
02:16And on top of that, they were very reliable and really cool.
02:19Pat's 56 is especially cool because the pickup truck body is very rare compared to the typical CJ Jeep that
02:26you always see.
02:27How about the interior?
02:28What do you want to do there?
02:29I think the seats are fine just the way they are.
02:32Yeah, they're beautiful.
02:32Seriously, though, you do have some major problems with this truck.
02:36If I thought it was easy, I wouldn't have brought it to you.
02:38What kind of visions do you have for this thing?
02:40Well, what we'd like to have you do is make this into the catering vehicle.
02:45So when we go to parties, we can cook right on site.
02:50What I had in mind here, I was thinking flatbed.
02:53Yeah.
02:54Then on it, we put a grill, a warmer, and it'd be nice to have some sort of refrigeration unit.
02:59What's important to me is the body and the look, retaining most of the history of this vehicle because that's
03:07what everybody looks at.
03:08Pat wants to retain the history of this classic Willis pickup truck.
03:11We're not going to do the typical, glossy, beautiful restoration that we always do.
03:16We're going to make a functional, really cool rat rod, which is basically a truck that's going to look old
03:22and weathered, have that farm truck look on the outside.
03:24But the mechanical end of it is going to be brand new and completely restored.
03:28We'll take this thing off the trailer.
03:30We'll draw up some ideas for you.
03:32We'll give you an exact blueprint, basically, of what we're going to build as far as the grill, the warmer,
03:38the refrigerator.
03:39And we'll make it happen.
03:40Okay.
03:41Don't forget to tell me the price.
03:43The price.
03:45Well, you've got a ton of work here.
03:47We really don't have an exact idea of what we're doing yet.
03:50But, I mean, I'd say you're looking, you know, somewhere between $35,000 and $50,000 by the time it's
03:57all said and done.
03:59I was hoping more around $10,000.
04:00Yeah, I'm sure that's what you were hoping.
04:02But when this is done, you're going to have a brand new vehicle.
04:05And you can't go to the car dealership and buy a brand new car for $10,000.
04:09I've got to be honest.
04:09I had no idea what I was talking about when I came here.
04:12And that's what I brought it for, is to get an idea.
04:14Yeah. A restoration on a truck like Pat's could cost well over $50,000.
04:19I'm going to have to get creative to get the price down on this thing so that he doesn't break
04:23his piggy bank.
04:24We take a lot of pride in the work that we put out, and we're very fair with our prices.
04:28You're going to get what you pay for.
04:31Okay, get it off the flatbed. Let's go.
04:33All right, let's do it. Thanks, Pat.
04:35We won't let you down.
04:35All right, thanks, guys.
04:48All right, it's ready to go.
04:49But I don't think it has brakes.
04:55Pete, can you steady it?
04:58Sort of.
05:00Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:01All right, there it goes.
05:04I took a shot right to the knee.
05:08You did a heck of a job on steering that.
05:10I thought you were my watcher.
05:12I was up front, for God's sakes.
05:19Want me to try?
05:20Yeah.
05:21Drag it.
05:30This thing's just been sitting for so long.
05:33It's not pumping any fuel.
05:35Let's get this thing torn apart.
05:36The box has got to come off.
05:38This engine's got to come out.
05:40Seat should come out of it.
05:41The first thing we need to do with this Willis
05:42is get this old, rotted, wooden bed off and out of our way
05:45so we can see this frame and see what's going on
05:48so we know what we're up against.
05:49Let's start with the box.
05:51Can we smash?
05:51All right, let's get the sled jammers out and have some fun.
05:54You boys can use the big ones.
05:56Let's go.
05:57Let's go.
05:58Let's go.
05:59Let's go.
06:14Let's go.
06:19Woo.
06:30It looks a little lighter now, huh, boys?
06:33Yeah.
06:34Let's get this thing off of here.
06:35Crazy.
06:40Look how cocked that frame is.
06:42Oh, wow.
06:43Is it bent there?
06:44Yeah, this wheel's going that way.
06:46Oh, the frame is all bent to hell.
06:48Wow.
06:49A lot.
06:50Yeah, we got a serious problem here, boys.
06:52Yeah.
06:54That sucks.
06:55Yeah.
06:55This is bad.
06:57That's not even usable.
06:59We'd have to cut that right off and start from scratch.
07:13Excuse me, gentlemen.
07:14I'm looking for Bodie.
07:15I'm Bodie.
07:16Bodie Scott.
07:17Scott, how you doing?
07:18Good.
07:18What you got?
07:19I've got an old milk truck you might be interested in.
07:22Milk truck?
07:22It's made by a company called Divco.
07:24Love Divco milk trucks.
07:26All right.
07:26Let's go check it out.
07:28I don't want to burst your bubble.
07:29This may be different than what you had in mind.
07:31Oh, boy.
07:33Yeah, it's a little different than what I had in mind.
07:37Just your size, Mitchell.
07:39Because I'm not going to fit in it.
07:41That's actually really cool.
07:43Where did it come from?
07:44The story on it, my wife's family established a dairy in Orange County, and it became quite
07:51successful.
07:51In the 60s, they had, to my knowledge, a fleet of five or six of these.
07:55Really?
07:56That they used for parades and things like that.
07:58The dairy closed in the early 90s, and my wife and I were on the property and came across
08:04this, which we believe is the last of the fleet, that survived.
08:09They actually did home deliveries.
08:11In these things?
08:12In Divco trucks.
08:13Okay.
08:15Now, it's funny when you say that, because not a lot of people know what an old milk truck
08:19is.
08:19They don't understand that they used to go door to door.
08:22Divco stands for Detroit Industrial Vehicle Company, one of the first delivery truck companies
08:27in America.
08:27Probably best known for milk delivery trucks.
08:30These things were so cool that Divco decided to make a bunch of miniature ones.
08:35They would use them in parades, and they'd even give them away as prizes on shows like
08:39The Price is Right.
08:40So what exactly do you want done with this thing?
08:43We want to see it run, put our grandkids in it, and drive it around.
08:47Okay.
08:47It looks like it had a motor in it before.
08:50The last that I can tell, I think it had an electric motor, but I've never seen it run.
08:58What about tires?
09:00Pneumatic?
09:00Would you mind changing out any?
09:01I would not mind changing that, because that's a rough ride, and raise it up a little bit.
09:05Okay.
09:06The biggest thing is the body.
09:08We have a logo from the family dairy that we would like to probably put on the side.
09:12All right.
09:13That'd be cool.
09:14How much are you looking to spend on it?
09:15What's your budget?
09:16Maybe $5,000, $6,000 if we can do it for that.
09:20Well, I'll be honest with you.
09:21We've never done nothing like this, so would we be able to keep it and do some research
09:25and put some solid pricing together?
09:29Can I get in it?
09:30You can try.
09:31All right.
09:33It'll be all about this.
09:35Oh, yeah.
09:38Yeah, I will never be fitting in that thing.
09:42It's just your size, dude.
09:43Maybe I can make it from my house to here.
09:45Yeah, heck yeah.
09:45It's my commuter.
09:46How cool would that be, actually cruising on the freeway?
09:56It's going to be a lot of fun with the motor, isn't it?
09:58Right?
09:59I think we got it from here.
10:00All right.
10:01Put it in your hands.
10:02Yeah.
10:06Yeehaw!
10:09You're relieved of your duties.
10:11These guys are taking over.
10:12Scott's Divco is a perfect opportunity for Bodhi Jr. and Justin to build something from the
10:17ground up.
10:19You're on your way to being as good as your old man.
10:28All right, guys.
10:29You're relieved of your duties.
10:31These guys are taking over.
10:32Bodhi Jr. and Justin have been working with me now for about a year.
10:35I'm putting the two together so that they can learn the business.
10:38Scott's Divco is a perfect opportunity for these two to build something from the ground
10:43up.
10:43They'll learn how to do steering, engine work, chassis, because it's all the same.
10:47This will help them step up to the bigger projects.
10:50Why don't you guys start measuring, cutting, ordering some metal.
10:54All right.
10:55All right.
10:55All right.
10:55Good luck.
10:56Let's do it.
10:57Here you go.
10:57Here's a good place to start.
10:59Thanks.
10:59Bodhi Jr. and Justin are going to have to do a lot of planning because it needs just about
11:04everything.
11:05Pneumatic tires, wheels.
11:06It's going to need new brakes.
11:08It's going to need a new chassis.
11:09It's going to need a new engine.
11:10Even though this is a small vehicle, this is still a big project.
11:14These guys got to preserve the history of the Divco body while improving on and modernizing
11:20its functionality.
11:21All right.
11:22Got the last few pieces here.
11:23So let's just get this laid out and see how it looks.
11:26Sounds good.
11:27Once the boys got their metal cut, the next step is to weld the chassis together.
11:31I'm checking in on them to make sure that everything's up to my standards.
11:35They really got to make sure that this thing's squared up and that the welds are going to hold
11:39together.
11:39What's up, guys?
11:40What do you got here?
11:42Oh, look at this, man.
11:44You guys are jamming.
11:46You drew up plans and everything.
11:47Who drew up the plans?
11:48I did.
11:49Wow, dude.
11:50I like it.
11:51You welding yet?
11:52I'm getting there.
11:53Yeah?
11:54Want me to show you how to do a few things?
11:56Sure.
12:00Your first reaction when you see the spark, you're going to want to jump.
12:04Yeah.
12:04You just want to hold it and make sure that you got both sides evenly and you can see that
12:09it's melted into both sides.
12:10I usually place a nozzle on my thumb and somehow get really relaxed.
12:18All right.
12:19Perfect tack, right?
12:22Why don't you give them right here?
12:29That'll work.
12:30You're on your way to being as good as your old man.
12:34I really like the way this is going.
12:36This looks pretty cool.
12:36Finish tacking it up, start welding it, and I'll check back in on you a little bit.
12:41All right.
12:42Thanks.
12:43All right.
12:59Looks like this side raised up a little bit.
13:02I don't think we can get away with that.
13:05Bodie Jr. and Justin know my standards.
13:07If they have a crooked frame, nothing's going to line up right and it's going to go down
13:11the road crooked.
13:12Turn it around, get that clamp on it, re-tack it.
13:15Luckily, they only tacked it together.
13:17They can take a grinder, they can cut the tacks, and they can get back on track.
13:22Seeing the guys figure out that they've made a mistake and they're fixing it on their own
13:27is just what I wanted from them.
13:29I know they want to make it badass.
13:31They want to make it right.
13:32They want to hit this out of the park to show that they can move on to bigger projects.
13:36As long as they learn from this and they try their best, they aren't going to fail.
13:42Looks pretty good.
13:57Hey, Bob.
13:59Mike.
13:59How are you?
14:00What in the world are you doing?
14:01Wait a minute.
14:02Let me close it.
14:02I've known Mike for years.
14:04We call him Neon Mike around here.
14:06He's in the neon business and he helps us with these old neon signs that we build.
14:10It's nice to see him bring us something for a change.
14:13You said you were bringing a horse.
14:15I thought you were riding one in or something.
14:18Well, I found this one at a flea market.
14:20Could you have brought me one in any worse condition?
14:23This is the best one I could find.
14:25I have some nieces and nephews whose birthday parties are coming up and they may enjoy riding.
14:31This is made by Bally Corporation.
14:33Used to see them in front of grocery stores.
14:36This is the top of the line.
14:38This is the champion.
14:41Bally called Gene Autry, king of the cowboys.
14:44And they said, Gene, what should we call this?
14:47And he said, well, my horse is champion.
14:49They said, good idea.
14:51Let's call it the champion.
14:55What in the world do you want me to do with it?
14:57I want you to completely restore it to like new condition.
15:01A lot of work, Mike.
15:02It's got some levers and a motor and a belt.
15:05You put your nickel in here and it starts moving.
15:08I mean, might work.
15:10Probably doesn't work.
15:11Look at the cord.
15:14This is a metal base, which makes me think it's probably a later model because the earlier
15:20models were wood bases.
15:22Let's put a wood base back on it.
15:23Give it a little more authenticity.
15:25Okay.
15:26Look at this saddle.
15:27Holy cow.
15:29Look at this.
15:30It's all rotten.
15:31Half of it's gone.
15:32It's bridles.
15:33Half of that's gone, too.
15:35We got the stirrups here.
15:39You see that?
15:42That's trash.
15:43We're getting new stuff, just like when it was brand new.
15:46It's not going to be cheap, brother.
15:48What are we looking at?
15:49I need three weeks.
15:53I need $5,000 if you need three weeks.
15:56We've got to build a new base, dig into that motor, paint the horse, and then we've got
16:01to source out all that leather trim from somewhere.
16:04Three weeks is not enough time to do this.
16:07We're going to have to put on extra help, and you know, that's more money.
16:12$4,000 in four weeks.
16:14How about $4,500 in four weeks?
16:18Deal.
16:20I'm pretty comfortable with what Bob has told me is wrong with it.
16:23I'm okay with the price.
16:24I think it'll be well worth the dollar spent.
16:32Let's take this thing off here and start tearing it down.
16:35Here we go.
16:36This horse is heavy.
16:47Mike's old horse is fixable, but the base and the motor are rusted, busted, and not worth
16:53a second look.
16:54I searched around and found a replacement motor, and it'll do the trick.
16:57We're mounting it on a new wooden base, just like the original coin-op horse used to be.
17:02This is going to be a big improvement over the original rusty base.
17:07Lay it over.
17:08One, two, three.
17:12There we go.
17:14With the quick turnaround that Mike has given us on this, I've had to bring in Tony.
17:19He's a master mechanic, and if anybody can help me get this 70-year-old belt drive motor
17:25up and running, it's him.
17:27All right, get ready.
17:28Here comes the big deal.
17:32Look at that.
17:33Just spinning.
17:34Yeah.
17:35Yeah.
17:35Turn it off here.
17:37That belt's so stretched out.
17:40One of the first things to go on an old motor like this are the belts.
17:43Over time, the rubber deteriorates and stretches, and then there's no tension to drive the motor.
17:48I'm hoping that swapping these out for new ones will do the trick.
17:51It's supposed to go like this, and then it's supposed to come back down, but it can't.
17:58I really don't understand that.
17:59This whole thing should turn this way.
18:03This is going to have to be a position.
18:04Wait a minute.
18:05Wait a minute.
18:05Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
18:06Look right here.
18:07See the distance right here?
18:09This one and the distance of this one.
18:12That one's showing two, almost a little two and a quarter, a little more.
18:16Look at that one.
18:17It's over two and a half.
18:18At this point, I think what we need to do is take these two bolts out and take this whole
18:23thing up and see if we can't figure out why we're in this position.
18:29The framing on those motor mounts is off by better than half an inch, which would explain a lot.
18:33If the belts are out of alignment, there's going to be too much tension on the motor to drive the
18:38flywheel.
18:41There we go.
18:42Looks great.
18:44I just am in a hurry to get the horse on there, so I want to see this horsey move.
18:49Well, all I can say to that, Bob, you're just going to have to hold your horses.
18:54Oh, my God.
19:04Okay, let's take it for a test run.
19:06Here we go.
19:07Okay, let's try it out and see what happens here.
19:11Oh!
19:13It's great.
19:14Look at that.
19:15It's working real nice now.
19:17The only thing missing is some kid screaming.
19:25She's ready.
19:26Have you driven it yet?
19:28No.
19:33Looks like he's having fun, that's for sure.
19:35Well, once...
19:36Oh, and there we go.
19:37What'd you do?
19:43All right.
19:44How are you on your side?
19:46I got two feet.
19:47How about you?
19:48A foot and a half.
19:50This new frame and chassis and engine setup, this is what we need.
19:54Definitely.
19:55All right, let's get this thing apart.
19:56Pat's 56 Willis had a blown motor.
19:59It had a bent frame and few parts worth saving.
20:03So, we needed to get creative here because Pat doesn't have a very big budget and I needed
20:07to figure out how to get this restored for him as fast and cheap as possible.
20:11And I found a CJ5 from the 78 Jeep that is a runner, it has a good chassis, and it's
20:17going
20:17to be a really good start to this project.
20:19The CJ5 basically kept the same design for over 20 years and it's very, very similar to the
20:25Willis.
20:26So, we're going to mate the two of these things up, but our biggest challenge is that
20:30the CJ5 body is a lot shorter than the Willis pickup truck.
20:34So, we need to actually cut the frame of the CJ and lengthen it six or seven feet to
20:39make this thing work for us.
20:40And then get the cab of the Willis on the CJ frame.
20:43After we do that, we've got a modern Jeep engine that we're going to put underneath
20:46this pickup truck.
20:48Let's be careful.
20:49Yeah.
20:51We did a full overhaul on our CJ5 Jeep engine and transmission.
20:55We got them painted up looking beautiful, but now we need to mount them in our Franken truck
21:00and it's going to be a big challenge.
21:02So, everything fits perfect.
21:04Just, we've got to get it all lined up exactly.
21:13Just a matter of alignment on the transmission of the engine.
21:18Get a few different angles coming together.
21:21Keith, can you swing the lift so it twists the motor a little bit?
21:26Just watch your head, Pete.
21:27That leg doesn't hit you.
21:29Pete's just about got this last bolt in.
21:33Perfect.
21:35That's the room.
21:36Fits like a glove.
21:41The cool thing about this Willis is that it's going to retain its patinaed, weathered,
21:46classic truck look, but it's going to be sitting on a modern drivetrain that's going
21:50to be reliable, functional, and just overall work great.
21:54Until now, I wasn't sure this was all going to come together this nice, so I'm pretty relieved.
21:59Nice.
22:00Wow, it's pretty.
22:01Yep.
22:03All right.
22:03Nice job, guys.
22:04Let's go get some lunch.
22:05Okay.
22:06Sounds good.
22:20Sounds like they got it running.
22:22Well, it was running.
22:23My son, Bodie Jr., and his pal, Justin, are making pretty good headway on Scott's mini
22:27milk truck.
22:28They got the chassis done.
22:29They got a six and a half horsepower engine mounted on this thing.
22:32It's looking pretty good, but the proof is in the pudding.
22:35We got to still see how this thing performs.
22:38Have you driven it yet?
22:39No.
22:40Nobody's driven it?
22:41Nope.
22:42Let me see if I'd fit here.
22:48Holy crap.
22:49Yeah, I can feel a cramp coming on, so I'm going to have Mitchell drive it.
22:55Take her for a drive.
22:57I hope I'm not going to need this.
22:59I hope you're not either.
23:13It looks like it's going straight.
23:15It looks like he's having fun.
23:20It's like a Mario cart or something.
23:24Mitchell's going pretty fast.
23:26I don't know if we want little kids going that fast.
23:28Yeah, we might turn it down a little bit.
23:30Yeah, that's something.
23:31Oh, and there we go.
23:33What'd you do?
23:34Our first test drive doesn't go as planned.
23:37Go-kart's got some issues.
23:38Well, we lost first gear.
23:41Only gear.
23:42Something's clunking around.
23:44Did the link come off?
23:46Yeah, the chain came off.
23:47The chain wasn't adjusted properly, which caused the thing to stop running.
23:51These guys should have checked this thing just a little bit better
23:54before they put my best guy, Mitchell, in the driver's seat.
23:57We've got to tighten those more.
23:59Yeah, well, that's not very good.
24:01You only did a couple passes.
24:02Bodie Jr. and Justin have done a really good job
24:05at engineering and designing the chassis for this thing.
24:08But now they've got a few things that they've got to fix.
24:10Make sure everything's nice and straight because it didn't move on you.
24:13Once they get those things fixed,
24:15everything will be back on the right track.
24:17And we'll be able to get this thing out to paint.
24:19Get her back in there.
24:20Get to work.
24:20All right.
24:27Late now.
24:28Okay.
24:28Okay.
24:29I'm holding.
24:30Okay.
24:31Wow, Bob, that is awesome.
24:34This horse should have been put down,
24:36but we brought it back to life.
24:43The next challenge on Mike's 1946 coin-op kiddie ride
24:48is to make that horse look like Gene Autry's horse champion.
24:53And if anybody can do that, Gary can.
24:57After I sanded the horse,
24:59the original color was the first color on the horse.
25:03This is it right here.
25:05So I'm going to have to pull it up on the computer now.
25:08I have to find the formula so I can mix the paint.
25:14And there's our color.
25:36As soon as this dries,
25:37I'll finish up the detail work,
25:39and then champion here is off to the races.
25:48Wait now.
25:49Okay.
25:50Okay.
25:50I'm holding.
25:51My buddy Neon Mike is here to pick up his 1946
25:55Bally coin-op horse kiddie ride.
25:58When he brought it to us,
25:59it was just awful.
26:01But we brought this back to life.
26:04Okay.
26:05Holy mackerel.
26:06No way.
26:11That horse is unbelievable.
26:15I cannot believe what you have done
26:18with this old horse.
26:20Let's take a look.
26:21All right.
26:22Up close.
26:24If you recall,
26:25this thing was in deplorable condition.
26:28Oh, it had cracks all over?
26:30It had cracks all over.
26:30It had holes in it.
26:32This horse should have been put down.
26:34But we brought it back to life.
26:36This horse, when I brought it in,
26:37was full of cracks,
26:38and now there are no cracks,
26:40no holes.
26:41It looks brand new.
26:44You know that rusty, nasty thing
26:45you brought over here?
26:47Yeah.
26:47Well, there was more rust
26:48than there was anything else.
26:50We had to replace everything.
26:51The base is made out of wood.
26:53Look at his eyes.
26:54Aren't those cool?
26:55Those are beautiful.
26:56All original colors.
26:58What about this saddle?
26:59This is fantastic.
27:01Well, it's a new saddle.
27:02New bridle.
27:03New reins.
27:04New stirrups.
27:06How about the inside?
27:06Did the motor work and all that stuff?
27:09Nothing worked.
27:10Nothing worked.
27:11So you got brand new mechanicals.
27:14Well, that's just,
27:15that's incredible.
27:16Okay, Bob.
27:17So it looks great.
27:18Yeah, it looks great.
27:19But now I've got to know,
27:21does it work?
27:22Well, there's one way to find out.
27:25Well, hop on.
27:26Uh-uh, brother.
27:26It's your horse.
27:27Get on there.
27:28I'll go behind the horse.
27:30The dangerous way.
27:31Yeah, you're not supposed to do that.
27:33All right.
27:34Now, how do we turn it on?
27:36Flip the switch.
27:38Yeah!
27:39Look at this.
27:40Woo-hoo!
27:41I love it.
27:44You look just like Gene Autry.
27:46I feel like Gene Autry.
27:47Well, you're on his horse anyway.
27:49I hope he doesn't mind.
27:50Well, thank you very much.
27:51You're quite welcome.
27:52I think this is absolutely incredible.
27:54Nieces and nephews are going to love it.
27:55Oh, boy.
27:57They're going to love it.
27:58You're not kidding.
28:11Okay, Pete.
28:13We should probably start with the grill first.
28:15Yep.
28:15Since everything else bolts to it, I guess.
28:17Correct.
28:18We're getting Pat's 56 Willis pickup truck ready for his year-end cookout, which is only
28:23a mere two weeks away.
28:24He wanted us to keep that classic look and feel of the Willis truck, but we had to replace
28:29three quarters of this thing.
28:31We decided to go with a rat rod look, which would give us that worn-out paint and patina
28:36feel that Pat really wanted.
28:38That's a good-looking grill.
28:39We either replaced or repaired all of the corroded and rotted-out sheet metal on this Willis.
28:44After we did that, we airbrushed it to give it that fake rust look so that it would match
28:49the patina on the rest of the truck and then covered it with a flat clear to preserve it.
28:53Now, Keith and Pete are finishing putting up all the last body panels on it, and it's looking
28:56really cool.
28:57This has got to go inside and over the shop like that.
29:02The greatest barbecue I've ever had is the one I'm going to have when this thing gets done.
29:13Just open up them hinges and guide them in.
29:19Let's give it a try here.
29:21See how the lines look.
29:23They are, however.
29:24Look at that.
29:25That's pretty good.
29:27Lines look pretty good.
29:28Yeah.
29:29Not bad at all.
29:34We've got these frameworks I built into the bed.
29:37They're going to pull out, and the steak rack sides are now going to come down and lay on
29:41these and become a walkway for the cooking.
29:43Pat needs his Willis to be able to go to catering events.
29:46And when he gets to the catering events, he wants to have a few of his cooks up on top
29:50of the bed cooking and serving food to people.
29:53We designed this bed to fit all of his cooking equipment and have sides that actually fold
29:58down where his workers can stand on, and they'll be strong enough to support them moving around
30:02and cooking at these events.
30:15There.
30:16That's the start of it.
30:18And we'll build up from here.
30:19We'll come up three boards high.
30:21My next step, we've got to cut some angle iron to be able to bolt the three boards together.
30:33These racks will pull all the way out about 18 inches, give it a good walking surface.
30:40Pretty good.
30:41Get her clamped in place.
30:50All we just need to do is put a couple of bars out so it lands on these two other
30:55supports
30:55from underneath.
31:07Now the true test will be, will it hold a guy my size up there grilling?
31:19I like it.
31:21Grills will be up about this high or so.
31:25Nice level.
31:25And if it'll hold 110 pounds like myself, I ought to be able to hold a couple of grills.
31:35That's a bit bigger than the one I brought yet.
31:37We super-sized it.
31:38You want to see the real thing?
31:39I've been waiting a long time, yeah.
31:41All right.
31:41Let's see it.
31:42Bodhi!
31:44You like that?
31:45Perfect.
31:47That is cool.
31:48Check it out.
31:51Bodhi Jr. and Justin are almost finished with the Mini 50s milk truck for Scott.
31:56Just got a few more things to wrap up.
31:58What are you guys doing?
32:00Finishing wiring up these lights.
32:02While they're wiring up the lights, I'm adding something a little special.
32:06Check out what I got.
32:08The decals.
32:09Scott's wife's family owned a dairy for many years.
32:12And that's where this Mini Divco came from.
32:15They used to run it in parades and use it for advertising.
32:17They left us a sign with the logo on it.
32:19I'm turning it into a decal, and I plan on putting it on the side of this Divco.
32:23I really only got one shot at this, because we only got two maids.
32:34Please come off without pulling everything off with it.
32:46Come on, man.
32:49Oh, my D's getting away from me.
32:52This project was a really good test for what Bodhi Jr. and Justin could do.
32:56They took the reins from the ground up.
32:59They learned from their mistakes, and they were able to fix it and make it perfect for the customer.
33:03Good job, guys.
33:04Do you think I could fit in it?
33:06Probably.
33:07Try.
33:07I think so?
33:07Try.
33:12Let's see here.
33:15Oh, yeah, man.
33:17I can drive it just like this.
33:19I don't know if this is going to work.
33:20Oh, cramp.
33:21Oh, cramp.
33:22Oh, man.
33:27And that was the end of his driving career.
33:31Get me out of here.
33:36Okay.
33:38I'm going to go back to building big boy stuff, all right?
33:41Good job, guys.
33:46I hope you like it.
33:48I like the way that this dip code turned out so much that I even borrowed myself a full-size
33:53one that I may keep and turn it into a shop truck.
33:56Plus, I thought I'd have a little fun with Scott.
33:58That's a bit bigger than the one I brought you.
34:00We super-sized it.
34:01I loved your go-kart so much that I had to get myself a shop truck.
34:06You want to see yours?
34:07You want to see the real thing?
34:08I've been waiting a long time, yeah.
34:10All right.
34:10Let's see it.
34:11Bodhi!
34:14That's the one I brought you.
34:16Check it out.
34:17Oh, yeah.
34:19Pretty cool, huh?
34:20Oh, man.
34:22A lot different than the last time you saw it, huh?
34:23That is a lot different than the last time I saw it.
34:26My grandkids are going to love it.
34:28I got to tell you, you know, as much as this means to your family, it meant a lot that
34:32you had us build it.
34:33And I involved my family.
34:35My son, Bodhi, and his friend, Justin.
34:37That is great.
34:38We were actually the ones that built the thing.
34:40Fantastic.
34:41Thank you, Bodhi.
34:42You did an awesome job.
34:43Way beyond what I expected it would be.
34:45Pretty cool, huh?
34:45I love the color.
34:46Yeah, it's kind of like a classic, you know, a creamy white, like they had back in the day.
34:51You know what I mean?
34:52It's the actual logo.
34:53Yeah.
34:54We just scaled it to size to fit right there.
34:57It's got a completely brand new chassis that Bodhi and Justin built.
35:01Yeah.
35:02Brand new motor.
35:03A motor.
35:04It didn't have a motor when we brought it.
35:05Exactly.
35:06It's got pneumatic tires, so it actually feels like it's got suspension now.
35:10It's got working lights.
35:13It's got the ignition kills right here on the dash.
35:16Kept the old steering wheel.
35:18Fantastic.
35:19All the old steering wheel.
35:20That was great.
35:21New interior.
35:24We've got brand new diamond plate flooring.
35:27That's incredible.
35:28Yeah.
35:28It actually runs.
35:29You want to see it run?
35:30Let's hear it run.
35:31Yeah.
35:31Ready.
35:33First pull.
35:34Right?
35:35Nice.
35:36Take your first spin, Bodhi.
35:37Let's see it, Bodhi.
35:38Show them how it works.
35:39This is going to be interesting.
35:45There you go.
35:50Pick that knee up.
35:54Okay.
36:00All right, dude.
36:01Let's see it.
36:05Yeah.
36:10The truck's been in the family for a long time, so to us, it's always going to be a family
36:16thing, and now for Bodhi to have included his son in the build as well.
36:20Give it gas, Bodhi!
36:21Woo-hoo!
36:23You know, things like this are an investment in families all the way around.
36:28It's so cool because it looks like an actual divco.
36:30Yeah, that looks so neat.
36:32That is awesome.
36:33That is great.
36:33I would love to see six of those running down the street in a parade.
36:36Right?
36:37Well, good job, Bodhi.
36:38Good job, Bodhi.
36:39Double conscience.
36:39You need help getting out?
36:41Can opener?
36:42I got it.
36:43Fry bar?
36:46I love it.
36:47That's terrific.
36:49Thanks for the opportunity.
36:50Scott really seems to be happy and loves the way that this thing turned out, which makes
36:54me happy because it means the guys have succeeded, and they pulled this off and did a great job.
36:59I'm very proud of them.
37:01It's going to be a hard one to let go.
37:03Well, you got your own to work on now.
37:04Yeah.
37:05Yeah, we do.
37:06We say we load it up, and you get back to the family.
37:09All right, let's do it.
37:10All right, let's do it.
37:13We'll take it home.
37:18Holy smokes, look at this.
37:20I see this thing coming at me.
37:22Whoa.
37:22I am so impressed.
37:24What a job you do, Bodhi.
37:25Oh, look at that thing.
37:26It's unbelievable.
37:28You should have seen what it looked like before.
37:34We're loading Pat's catering equipment into the bed of his 56 Willis and driving it over
37:39to Piggy Pat's Barbecue for his year-end cookout.
37:42This truck is the perfect combination of old-school charm and modern functionality, and I know that
37:47Pat's going to love it.
37:50When Pat brought us his 56 Willis, it was rusted out and didn't run.
37:54Now, he can take his delicious barbecue fare with him wherever he wants in this thing and
37:58know that it's going to be reliable, not break down, and look really cool while he's doing
38:02it.
38:03Holy smokes, look at this.
38:06Oh, man.
38:07Oh, man.
38:08I don't believe it.
38:10Look at Steve.
38:11That's awesome, man.
38:14I see this thing coming at me.
38:16Whoa!
38:16I am so impressed.
38:18The thing is just amazing.
38:19I brought this piece of junk in, and now it's a beautiful truck with all this equipment
38:23on the back.
38:24What's going on, Pat?
38:25Wow, man.
38:26What a job you did, buddy.
38:27Oh, look at that thing.
38:28It's unbelievable.
38:29Look at this thing.
38:30You should have seen what it looked like before.
38:33About a month ago, Pat brought us a 56 Willis truck that was in terrible shape, and he wanted
38:39a catering vehicle.
38:40So what we did was took a 78 Jeep, and then we stretched the chassis on that.
38:45We retrofitted his 56 Willis truck onto that chassis, lengthened it.
38:50We made this wood bed for him because it had a beat-up wooden box on it.
38:54It wasn't much of a bed, I tell you.
38:55It was rotted right to nothing.
38:57So we took that right off, made all this treated decking for him.
39:01Come around to the truck.
39:02Let me show you all the others.
39:03All right.
39:04All right.
39:04I can't believe this thing.
39:06When Pat brought us this truck, the whole bottom of it was rotted out.
39:09I mean, there was no floor pans, no cab corners, the bottoms of the doors.
39:12Now, you might look at it and think that it's been like this for 100 years.
39:15That's because we actually fabricated all new sheet metal, made the floor pans, made
39:20the rockers, cab corners, bottoms of the doors, and then we airbrushed fake rust on
39:24here to match the patina look of the truck.
39:26After that, we cleaned the whole truck, prepped it, and clear-coated it.
39:30This is a flat clear, so this will actually stay just like this.
39:33It's preserved.
39:34It's just a really cool rat rod look.
39:36This is unbelievable, Steve, really.
39:38All right.
39:39Now, we've got something really special for you inside here, Pat.
39:41We made pig's feet pedals for you.
39:44Check this out.
39:46Clutch brake and gas pedal.
39:48Oh, look at that.
39:50Oh, that's beautiful.
39:51Why don't you hop in there and see how it feels?
39:59All right.
40:00Oh, yeah.
40:02I'm sure they already do.
40:03Come on now.
40:04Let me show you the rest of this thing, man.
40:05You've got a lot more to see.
40:07We wanted some of the things to look brand new, so we got your brand-new military tires,
40:11painted your wheels, new headlights, marker lights, all your electricals new, the engine's
40:16all rebuilt.
40:17So you've got a patinaed, old-looking, really cool truck, but it's going to be 100% dependable,
40:23and it's just going to have that really cool barbecue feel to it.
40:26Yeah, I could do this.
40:26Now, you're probably wondering how you're going to cook on this thing, right?
40:29Can I get real high up in here?
40:31A little bit, yeah.
40:32Let me show you what else we did.
40:35What we did, Petey made all these slide-outs for you.
40:38Just undo the latch.
40:40Pull your slide-out.
40:42Whoa, look at that.
40:42That's amazing.
40:43You know?
40:44So you just slide those out.
40:46Oh, my gosh.
40:46The bedsides come down.
40:47So when you're going down the road, it looks like a wooden stake rack type of pickup truck.
40:52Now you slide those down, and you've got treated decking.
40:54You can walk all around.
40:55Oh, this is unbelievable.
40:57I mean, this is safe to stand on.

40:59All right.
41:01Cover it up.
41:02So now once you're up here, we've got everything set for you.
41:05You've got your grill.
41:06You've got a warming unit.
41:07You've got a refrigeration unit, storage, tables to prep things on, tables to serve.
41:12The only problem I see with that grill right now, man, it doesn't have any hot dogs.
41:16Oh, man.
41:17I think I can take care of that.
41:18We actually turned it on and got it warmed up because we're hoping you'll cook us some hot dogs.

41:39I am so impressed.
41:40I'm amazed.
41:41It's as traditional as it could be, yet it's modern and safe.
41:44We're fired up.
41:45I've got a bunch of our regular customers.
41:47I've got some family here.
41:48We've got a new vehicle, a new concept with new products.
41:52I've got a feeling this thing's going to generate a lot of interest.
