00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02So what is this?
00:03It's a pedal bulldozer.
00:05This is a bulldozer?
00:06This is it.
00:06Not much left of it.
00:08Parts is definitely going to be the major issue.
00:10Kelly was telling me that you want something sort of old.
00:12I just thought it would be kind of cool to have an old retro vending machine
00:15that we could use for some of our smaller items.
00:18Yeah, okay.
00:19And I really like that machine.
00:21There's no shell.
00:22Dang it.
00:23If that mechanism's not going to work.
00:25Another great sale by Rick Dale.
00:26Yeah, it messed up.
00:30I'm Rick Dale.
00:31And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:35To give new life to pieces from the past.
00:41Every project has its challenges.
00:44But there's no job we can't handle.
00:47This is American Restoration.
00:53In this business, the devil's in the details.
00:56Every single stage of a restoration is just as important as the last.
01:01Man, this thing's looking sharp.
01:02This looks fantastic.
01:04It wouldn't be pretty if I didn't do my job.
01:06When all is said and done, we want every item that leaves this shop to blow the customer away.
01:12I'm going to be in bike heaven.
01:14Oh my gosh.
01:16Eric, hi, I'm Kelly.
01:18I talked to you on the phone.
01:19Kelly, hi, nice to meet you.
01:20Hi, nice to meet you.
01:20This is my husband, Rick.
01:21Rick, good to meet you.
01:23I'm here today with Kelly at the Interbike Convention with all kinds of bike manufacturers from all over the world.
01:29And it is just an awesome array of bicycles.
01:31The potential customer wants to take a vending machine and make it into some kind of a tool dispenser.
01:38Wow, so these are the tools, huh?
01:40Yep.
01:40We make about 400 different tools just for bicycles.
01:43Wow.
01:44Kelly was telling me that you want some kind of a vending machine, something sort of old.
01:48Right.
01:48It's to commemorate our 50th anniversary this year.
01:51And I just thought it would be kind of cool to have an old retro vending machine that we could
01:56use for some of our smaller items.
01:58Gotcha.
01:59Well, actually, I've got a couple of machines on the back of the truck.
02:02Perfect.
02:03And, um, I'll see if it'll even work, you know?
02:05Alright.
02:05I'm gonna go shopping, okay?
02:07Yeah, fine.
02:07Alright, come on out here.
02:09Bye.
02:09I brought two machines with me.
02:11A 1964 cigar machine and a 1959 cigarette machine.
02:16Either one should be able to dispense his tools.
02:19I just hope he likes one of the styles.
02:21Perfect.
02:22You know, back in the day, there were cigarette machines in every bar, every front of every store.
02:27And what happened was, over the last 50 years, the government started cracking down on smoking because of health hazards.
02:33So a lot of the businesses had to go smoke-free.
02:36And that's when these machines became rare.
02:39Who needs cigarettes anyways?
02:40We're putting bike parts in this, right?
02:41Yeah, that's right.
02:42That's right.
02:42So we're taking something that used to be a, you know, a bad thing and making it healthy.
02:48Right.
02:48I like it.
02:49So this one here is a 1964 cigar machine.
02:53It used to be set up so where you can actually see the scars inside here.
02:57And then when you pulled on these levers, it would drop itself down into here.
03:01And if you look inside, these slots look big enough to be able to hold your tools.
03:06Now this one, this is more of a late 50s cigarette machine.
03:10Right.
03:10And it's got a lot of stainless on it that really, really polishes up well.
03:14You can tell this was built in the 50s and that was built in the 60s because you notice all
03:18these knobs are chrome.
03:20Right.
03:20To where those over there are plastic, you know?
03:22Yeah.
03:23It's locked.
03:23I forgot the key, but the inside should be similar to the cigar machine.
03:27I think they would fit in there.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Okay.
03:30And I really like that machine better.
03:32It just has a more classic look.
03:34I think there would be some really cool stuff you could do with that.
03:36Yeah.
03:37So what we'll do is we'll do the mirror.
03:39Yeah.
03:39And then we'll do like maybe your logo through here.
03:41Right.
03:41We do the blue on the outside.
03:43We polish up all this stainless and make the mechanism work to where it drops your product correctly.
03:48Right.
03:48All right.
03:49So what's this going to cost me?
03:51I'm looking at a 7500 to do the whole thing.
03:55I think this would be a great testament to 50 years.
03:58All right, let's do it.
03:58All right.
03:59Awesome.
03:59Awesome.
03:59That's cool.
04:00The machine I chose is in pretty rough shape.
04:03So I hope he can make it look like I want it to look.
04:13How much longer do we have on creating this thing?
04:15Three hours.
04:16Three hours and you'll be done?
04:17Hold on.
04:19What's up, Dad?
04:20Hey, Tyler.
04:21A customer just called me.
04:22His name is Kurt.
04:23And he wants to get something restored.
04:25And I'm gonna be gone for a while.
04:26Can you handle that for me?
04:28All right.
04:28All right, bud, thanks.
04:29Bye.
04:31Okay, I gotta run.
04:32But create this, create the gas pump, and then blast that.
04:35Okay?
04:39How you doing?
04:40You Kurt?
04:40Yep.
04:41Cool.
04:41Tyler.
04:42Nice to meet you.
04:43All right.
04:44So what is this?
04:45It's a 1950 pedal bulldozer.
04:48Played out with it when I was a kid.
04:49This is a bulldozer?
04:50It was.
04:51It was?
04:52Yeah.
04:53Actually, I've got a picture of me riding it.
04:55This is in about 1980.
04:561980.
04:57My dad found this pedal bulldozer in the scrap pile at work one day, and he brought it home
05:01for all of us kids to use.
05:02It's just something that we enjoyed playing with, and I'd like to see it put back together.
05:06Wow.
05:06This is a lot different than what's on this table.
05:09This is it.
05:10There's not much left of it.
05:12I mean, in that picture, there was blades and tracks and a bunch of different things
05:17that aren't actually here.
05:18There was actually a running board that went across on both sides of the little toolbox.
05:22Okay.
05:22There's a blade that's run by cable with this lever.
05:25Wow.
05:26That's not here.
05:27Okay.
05:28It's missing so much.
05:30Okay.
05:31Um, these are the front wheels.
05:34Those are the front wheels.
05:35They actually would slide back and forth to give the track tension.
05:38They actually had a metal link track.
05:40Wow.
05:40These were the steer.
05:41When you pull these back, it actually lifts that wheel off the ground.
05:45Then that wheel would spin so it wouldn't drive the track.
05:47And that would make it turn.
05:48Oh, I understand.
05:49So you're a real bulldozer.
05:50Yep.
05:50You're moving the levers, and you're raising the lever to pull the blade up and down.
05:54Then this is the front, obviously.
05:55Yep.
05:55That sits on top.
05:56That had an exhaust pipe.
05:58See?
05:59Now it's a bulldozer.
05:59Ah, look.
06:00We're closer.
06:01Do you know when it's exactly from?
06:03Actually, I have a magazine article.
06:06This is a 1950 Popular Mechanics.
06:09Child-sized bulldozer looks and works like the real thing.
06:13So you want this bulldozer to look just like the one in the magazine?
06:17I want to get it back as original as possible.
06:19Original.
06:19I mean, the colors, decals.
06:21Yep.
06:21I've seen pictures of really poorly restored ones, and I don't want that.
06:25I want it done right.
06:26I think my dad had a lot of fun watching us kids play with it.
06:29Yeah.
06:29That's my goal, to get it done and really surprise him.
06:32That's really awesome.
06:33So what are you thinking?
06:34What's this whole thing going to run me?
06:35To make it original like you want it, parts is definitely going to be the major issue.
06:39Worst case scenario, if we can't find the parts, we're going to have to manufacture them.
06:42We'll get all the pits out, get the whole thing straight.
06:45We'll match that 1950s caterpillar yellow.
06:48And there's a little bit of it on it left, so I can try to go off that.
06:52With all that being said, we're probably looking at 6,500.
06:59Wow.
07:01It means a lot to my dad.
07:02I know it will.
07:03Yeah.
07:04I think we've got to do it.
07:05I think we've got to do it.
07:07Awesome.
07:07That's awesome.
07:08Appreciate it.
07:08I'm excited.
07:08Thank you very much.
07:09Great.
07:10No, I'm excited to do it.
07:11I can't wait to get down here with my dad and see the expression on his face.
07:14I think that's going to be the part that I remember the most.
07:22Hey, Ty.
07:23What's up?
07:24I sold the cigarette machine to a guy that wants to make it into a tool vendor.
07:28He actually owns a company.
07:30His tool has to fit inside this and drop correctly to the bottom.
07:34And I didn't bring the key.
07:36I messed up.
07:37That's a Rick Dale sale right there.
07:38Yeah, I messed up.
07:38Hey, I don't know.
07:39Do we have a key for that?
07:41No.
07:41This will have to be drilled.
07:42I don't have the key.
07:43So let's drill that out.
07:44As soon as Kyle gets it open.
07:46Yeah.
07:47Come get me.
07:48Okay.
07:48Okay.
07:49Who forgets the key?
07:51Amateurs.
07:52Different vending machines have different ways of storing and dispensing their products.
07:56Once we get the door open, we'll see what kind of shelf system we're dealing with.
08:00And then we can figure out what size tools we can put in there.
08:03Oh!
08:08What the ?
08:09This is totally not going to work for what he's thinking about.
08:12What's he thinking about?
08:13He's thinking about putting tools in there, but look.
08:15This is slots.
08:16It's only made for something square and that specific size.
08:19He's not going to be happy.
08:21I'll be back.
08:21I'm going to go get him.
08:22Take some pictures or something.
08:25All right.
08:26We got that machine open.
08:27Good.
08:28Good.
08:28Okay.
08:29Not good.
08:29You're .
08:30There's no shelves.
08:31There's no shelves?
08:33I swear.
08:34All right.
08:35Let me go look at it.
08:37This is not going to work at all.
08:39Ah.
08:41It's a dropper.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Another great sale by Rick Dale.
08:45What you need to understand is everything is fixable.
08:49He liked the style of it, but the way it's designed, that mechanism's not going to work.
08:55So I got the answer.
08:57What, you're just going to switch the mech?
08:58Damn right I'm just going to switch the mech.
09:00Luckily, they made these in candy and in cigarette.
09:04So let's go find us a candy machine.
09:06The same model.
09:07Rob that mech.
09:09Put it in here to where the mechanism will accommodate his tools.
09:13Let's go ahead and rip the rest of it apart and I'll find the mech.
09:17Okay.
09:17Here we go.
09:18I hope for your sake he has this.
09:20Yeah.
09:21I know.
09:21We need one.
09:22You know, I think this is going to work.
09:24I really, really, I only need this mech.
09:26You got to buy the whole machine.
09:27You need it.
09:28I don't.
09:31I have no idea what we're looking at.
09:34You're going to remember this.
09:36Oh wow, my little dozer.
09:38Hey.
09:51We're converting a vending machine into a bicycle tool dispenser for a big client.
09:55While Ted's taking care of the painting and all the graphics for the outside of the machine,
10:00Tyler and I have to find a replacement mechanism for the inside of the machine to properly dispense the bicycle
10:06tools.
10:07I hope for your sake he has this.
10:09I can't believe that I got to look for this mechanism.
10:11My dad never messes up as much as he did on this project, so I'm really going to enjoy this.
10:16You know what you don't have to look for?
10:18A good looking mother .
10:19Because he's right here.
10:22Hey, Rick.
10:23How are you?
10:23Good.
10:23How you been?
10:24Good.
10:24We are actually looking for an old, uh, candy machine.
10:28You're more than welcome to go in the back and take a look and see if you can come up
10:32with something.
10:32Okay.
10:33Cool?
10:33Yeah.
10:33Let's see what they got back here.
10:37Holy Toledos.
10:38Look at all the stuff in here.
10:39Lots of stuff.
10:40Oh.
10:41Look at all these globes.
10:42These globes are actually original for the top of the gas pumps.
10:45It made it all the way from 1930 to now.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Nobody, no kids shot a BB at it.
10:49These are real rare.
10:50What about these gum machines?
10:52Literally one of every color gum machine.
10:54Those pulvers, they're made out of porcelain.
10:56They do have every one up there.
10:57But we're not here for, uh, gum machines.
10:59We're here for candy machines.
11:02What's this right here?
11:05Oh, I think that may be it.
11:07This is the same model.
11:08This is a national candy machine.
11:10See how the insides got those little trays in there?
11:12Yeah.
11:13And the handles are almost exactly alike.
11:15I think this would probably work.
11:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:18Look.
11:18This one here is set up to where it has these shelves that will still hold the weight of the
11:23tool.
11:24And when you pull the knob, this thing drops and it falls down to the bottom and comes out the
11:28tray.
11:28Gotcha.
11:29You know, I think this is going to work, but I want to try to get just this Mac.
11:33So go get Peter.
11:34All right.
11:35I'll be right back.
11:36This Mac should fit perfectly, but that's all I need.
11:39If I've got to pay for the whole machine, that's going to be one expensive mistake.
11:43Hey, Peter.
11:45This one here looks like the version that we need, and I think everything's there.
11:50But I really, really, I only need this Mac.
11:52I don't need the rest of the machine.
11:54Will you sell me just the Mac?
11:55Then what am I going to do with the case?
11:58You've got to buy the whole machine.
12:00Duh.
12:00What do you want for the whole machine?
12:03500.
12:07Will you go down at all?
12:09400.
12:13Okay, I'll do 400 because you need it.
12:17Awesome.
12:18Thanks, Peter.
12:19I mean, you helped me out a lot.
12:20I appreciate it.
12:21Nice save, Richard Dale.
12:22You want to walk home, Tyler Dale?
12:31We got in a pedal car bulldozer, and Tyler's having a hard time finding a bunch of parts
12:36for it.
12:37So I'm going to help him try to hunt some down since he helped me out with a bike tool
12:41project.
12:41Hey, Glenna.
12:42Hey.
12:43What are you guys doing?
12:44Hey, I'm Rick.
12:45We're looking for some pedal car parts.
12:47I have a few.
12:49This lady specializes in pedal cars, and if anybody's going to have rare parts, it's
12:53going to be her.
12:54When I buy collections, I get some bins of parts, and just go up the stairs and you'll
12:58see some shelves.
13:00Awesome.
13:00Thank you very much.
13:01I hope you find what you need.
13:03Okay.
13:04She says up here there's some parts.
13:06Hopefully we hit pay dirt.
13:07So that's cool.
13:08Hey.
13:08She's got some cars up there.
13:10Pedal car heaven.
13:11I like that.
13:12It's like a three-wheeled trike looking thing.
13:14That was like an X15.
13:16That's probably 60s.
13:17This is the beginning of the big wheel.
13:20You're pedaling with the front, and then you power steered it, you know?
13:23Mm-hmm.
13:23This is the one I'm used to as a kid.
13:25This was called atomic missiles, basically it was.
13:29They actually had directions down here that would tell you, you know, which bomb you
13:33were letting off, what missile.
13:35Let's see if she's got some parts.
13:37Okay.
13:37You know?
13:39Yeah, those are for tractors right there.
13:41That's the windshield to the fire engine.
13:44Hey.
13:46Whoa.
13:47Those are cool.
13:48There's two of them.
13:49This looks like a track.
13:51They're just pressed out pieces of steel with little hooks on the end.
13:55We can make some of these, punch these out, and make some more if we need longer.
13:59Okay.
14:00But this is like a great start.
14:01Yeah.
14:02All right.
14:02So why don't you go get her?
14:04Okay.
14:04And let's see what she wants for these tracks.
14:06Okay.
14:09Hey, Glenna.
14:10Hey.
14:11Okay.
14:11We were looking around, and we ended up finding these tracks.
14:14If you want to buy those, they're up for sale.
14:17How much do you want for them?
14:18I was thinking maybe $250.
14:21Um, how about a hundred and a half?
14:24How about two?
14:27All right.
14:27That's a deal.
14:28I'll take them.
14:28All right.
14:29I'll take them for sure.
14:30Cool.
14:30We're not exactly sure if this track is going to work, but it's better to have something
14:34to go off than to try to make something out of nothing.
14:37Sweet.
14:38Ow.
14:38You got lucky.
14:42Finding these tracks was a big help, and I really hope we can get this done on schedule.
14:47Manny's modifying the tracks we found to make them work, and doing body work on the
14:51bulldozer parts so that Ted can do all the finishing touches on the exterior.
14:56I'm hoping when we're done, this thing's going to really pop.
15:00Hey, Dad.
15:01Yeah.
15:02Dad.
15:03Yeah.
15:03Kurt's here for the item we restored for him, and he brought his dad.
15:06Cool.
15:07Hey, Kurt.
15:08Good to meet you.
15:08Nice to meet you.
15:10Dwayne.
15:10Dwayne.
15:11He doesn't know what he's here for.
15:12Right on.
15:13Well, this ought to be good.
15:15All right.
15:15Well, let's go look at it.
15:16Can't wait.
15:17It's going out.
15:18My dad has absolutely no idea why we're here.
15:20Just to get my dad to go any place is tough, but if we pull this off, this is going
15:24to be incredible.
15:26Kurt, you remember when you came in, right?
15:28And you remember what it looked like, right?
15:29Oh, yeah.
15:30Yeah, it was very questionable, but I don't know.
15:33We did it.
15:33I'm excited.
15:34I just can't wait.
15:35And Dwayne.
15:37I have no idea what we're looking at.
15:40You're going to remember this.
15:42All right, so you two ready to see it?
15:43Oh, I'm more than ready.
15:44Okay.
15:44Here we go.
15:46One, two, three.
15:48Oh, wow.
15:49My little dozer.
15:50Hey, it came back to life.
15:52It's great.
15:54Hey, you did a super job.
15:56That's...
15:56Oh, wow.
15:57I saw it in the back, kind of wasting away, and I just really felt something needed to
16:01be done with it.
16:02I brought it here, and it did an incredible job.
16:04I found it in a pile originally, so I brought it home, put it back together.
16:09Kids played with it.
16:10Let's try that.
16:11Now it really got put back together.
16:13This is super.
16:15This is really great.
16:16You did a good job.
16:17Hey, James.
16:19You know, it came in with a lot of missing parts.
16:21The tracks on here, Tyler and I actually found somebody that deals in pedal cars, and she
16:26had to have them stuffed away.
16:27Really?
16:27So we got really lucky on that.
16:29Yeah.
16:29But the rest of the stuff, we made.
16:32Oh, wow.
16:32We ended up remaking the toolboxes and the fender.
16:35It didn't have an exhaust stack, so we made one the exact same size it would have been.
16:39When it came in, there was no seed on it, so we actually had to cut this wood to the
16:43shape, put some foam padding on it, and then wrap it.
16:46And then this whole plow on the front.
16:48Look at that.
16:49We handmade that whole thing.
16:51All this artwork on here, what Ted does, he actually hand paints all the graphics on
16:56this, and then we clear over everything.
16:58Okay.
16:58So that it's set to last another 50 years unless you get on it now.
17:03I normally would not go anywhere without knowing what I was doing.
17:07Yeah, what you're going for.
17:08But this was really worth it.
17:09He could have brought a new pickup truck home.
17:11It would have not meant as much as this.
17:14This is the ultimate.
17:16Yeah, it's awesome.
17:17It really feels good to me to bring something back to life for the memory.
17:21It just brings back a lot of memories about the kids playing with it, and to see it restored
17:26is just fantastic.
17:27Now it's my toy again, at least for now.
17:33Regular maintenance on your motorcycle chain is crucial.
17:36If it snaps, it can cause your rear wheel to skid, causing potential damage to your motor,
17:41and to you as a rider.
17:43When it comes to cleaning your motorcycle or bicycle chain, which is the best product to use?
17:55The answer and more are coming up.
18:03When it comes to cleaning your bicycle or motorcycle chain, which is the best product to use?
18:08The correct answer is C, kerosene.
18:11While gasoline, like white fuel or camp fuel, contain kerosene, they can spark a fire.
18:17So be careful to only use kerosene.
18:20Take an old rag and soak it in the kerosene.
18:23Rub the chain on all sides, and you can see how much dirt came off.
18:29And now, you've got a nice, clean chain, and you're ready to go.
18:40Babe?
18:40Yeah?
18:41Eric's here.
18:42Hey, Eric.
18:43Great to see you.
18:44Good to see you.
18:44Happy 50th anniversary.
18:47You bet.
18:48Are you excited to see this tool machine?
18:49I am really excited to see it.
18:51You remember the key thing I had?
18:52Right.
18:52I couldn't open it.
18:53I didn't bring the key.
18:54I messed up.
18:55That ended up to be a huge cluster fudge.
18:58But it got finished, and I can't wait to show it to you.
19:00Great.
19:01I can't wait to see it.
19:01It's going back, and I'll show it.
19:02It's over here.
19:03The whole mechanism fiasco really threw me for a loop on this project.
19:07But if the customer likes it, it'll totally be worth it.
19:10All right.
19:10So, you remember what this looked like, right?
19:12I did.
19:13Beat up.
19:14Original condition, so to speak.
19:16Yeah.
19:16But it had a lot of potential.
19:18You ready for your 50th anniversary surprise?
19:20Yeah, I am ready.
19:21Okay, here we go.
19:23One, two, three.
19:25Oh, man.
19:28Rick, you nailed it.
19:30That's our color.
19:31That's our blue.
19:32This is our original logo back from the early 60s.
19:35Just a classic look.
19:37Park tools all over it?
19:38That says park tools all over it.
19:40I love it.
19:41On the outside, all this is polished stainless to make it look just brilliant.
19:45And then these pieces are actually chrome with the handles on there.
19:48It didn't have a mirror, so we put the mirror inside here and then painted it all up.
19:53The black and the blue, they just go great together.
19:55And then on the inserts, we painted the back of it and then slid your cards in there so
19:59you can tell what it is.
20:00Perfect.
20:01You got our 50th anniversary logo on there.
20:04Yeah, you want to see inside?
20:05I do want to see inside.
20:06I put it up like that.
20:08These are the trays that hold each separate product.
20:11When you pull on it, it's going to drop and then come down here.
20:14So this is one that tips forward?
20:15Yeah.
20:16Okay.
20:16And it tips back.
20:17And each one of these, right now if they were all up, it would mean the machine would
20:21be empty.
20:21So look at the front.
20:22See how it says sold out?
20:23Oh, cool.
20:24And then as we close it, see it's bringing them all up?
20:27Yeah.
20:28It says 40 cents.
20:29Yeah.
20:29But this mechanism is off.
20:31Right.
20:31And it's all ready to go now.
20:33Great.
20:34Well, it all looks good just like you promised, but does it work?
20:37Well, give her a shot.
20:39All right.
20:42Hey!
20:44What'd you get?
20:45You got your phone.
20:46I got a change to one.
20:47I've always wanted one.
20:48Well, let's try this one.
20:51Oh!
20:52It worked again.
20:53It's like getting the candy store.
20:56I'm going to do them all.
20:58We'll put this right in the lobby with all of our memorabilia from the early days.
21:03Yeah.
21:03It's going to fit right in.
21:04It's going to be absolutely fantastic.
21:07You bet.
21:08Kelly, thank you.
21:09Thank you, Eric.
21:09Well, let's go inside.
21:10Kelly will finish up the paperwork and we'll get started creating.
21:13All right.
21:14Good.
21:14Okay.
