00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02The Dodgers want me to pitch the first pitch out of the game,
00:05and I need some practice.
00:06Oh!
00:09What do you got here?
00:10Old-fashioned electric mini car.
00:12It's a major amount of work.
00:14Probably $20,000 to do the whole car.
00:16Can you come down a little?
00:17Um...
00:18Come on, Rhett!
00:19He ain't gonna do nothing but it up.
00:21Here we go.
00:22Yeah!
00:27I'm Rick Dale.
00:28And at my shop, we share a passion.
00:32To give new life...
00:35to pieces from the past.
00:38Every project has its challenges.
00:41But there's no job we can't handle.
00:45This...
00:45is American Restoration.
00:55Hey, guys. I'm Rick.
00:57Hi, Rick. I'm Nick. This is my wife, Charlotte.
00:59Hi, Charlotte.
01:00What do you got here?
01:02Old-fashioned electric mini car.
01:04And we're hoping to get it restored here.
01:06Can I, uh, take it off?
01:07Yeah, definitely. Let's take a look at it.
01:17So, where'd you get this thing?
01:19Oh, we found it online from this guy who just had it in his backyard.
01:22It was sitting there for years.
01:23I think it's in late 60s or early 70s.
01:26Right.
01:27I mean, if you go all the way back into, like, the early 1900s,
01:30guys were building electric cars.
01:32But the problem was, electric cars were about four or five times the cost of gas cars.
01:36They went until 1935 and they stopped.
01:38In the 70s, we started to see gas prices rise.
01:41So then, all of a sudden, there's a new interest in electric cars.
01:44But it wasn't until the 90s that the manufacturing of hybrid and the electric car
01:48really got some serious attention from the car company.
01:51I mean, now you can go down and buy an electric car.
01:53You plug in the side of the wall and it drives real fast.
01:56So, what do you want to do to this?
01:58Well, we'd like to, uh, restore it back to its glory.
02:01It's something safe and fun, you know, obviously attractive.
02:04We like to go to car shows, so we'd like to drive it around in the car shows.
02:08Right.
02:09When I show up in this, I want everybody to be stopping and looking at it and taking its picture.
02:14She wants all eyes on her.
02:16That's right.
02:17To get this to the car shows, you're gonna have to drive it.
02:20So, it's gotta go fast enough to be able to keep up with traffic.
02:23Oh, yeah.
02:24Definitely.
02:25You know, if I was to restore this thing, the frame looks like it needs quite a bit of work.
02:28It's got suspension issues and the brake system and then the electrical system all be done on the frame.
02:34We strip it, put new windows in it.
02:36I would love to get this fiberglass back to where it's structurally strong again
02:40and safe enough to drive around for fun or at a car show.
02:43To get this thing all done, I'm looking at probably 20 grand to do the whole car.
02:48Wow.
02:48That's a bit out of our budget.
02:50Yeah, it's a major amount of work.
02:53You know, is there any room for any flexibility?
02:55Can it come down a little?
02:59Um, all this front door glass is all in decent shape.
03:03So, what I might be able to do is clean these up, reuse them, and I can probably reduce you
03:08down to about 18.
03:10I don't know.
03:11It's still a lot of money.
03:12Come on.
03:13We won't go on vacation.
03:14I want to go on vacation.
03:16I want this.
03:18All right.
03:19We'll do it.
03:20Okay.
03:22I can't wait to work on this bed.
03:23Thank you, Nick.
03:24Our expectations are really high on this one.
03:26I mean, we're putting a lot into it financially, and I want to be able to just get in and
03:30drive away.
03:38Oh.
03:39You good?
03:40What the?
03:41Look.
03:43Look.
03:43There's my dad.
03:46What in the hell are you doing?
03:50Well, you remember the Dodger hot dog cart we did?
03:53Yeah.
03:54Wow.
03:55Check it out.
03:55This thing is great.
03:57Look at this thing.
03:58This thing is amazing.
03:59Now the Dodgers want me to pitch the first pitch out of the game, and I need some practice.
04:03Holy .
04:04That's awesome.
04:05I grew up in California, and I followed the Dodgers since I was a little kid.
04:09So throwing out the first pitch is a huge deal for me.
04:12You remember the last time that you, like, picked up a ball and went out and played a sport with
04:17me?
04:1778?
04:18He pulled both quads.
04:19Wow.
04:19Both of his quads he pulled, just trying to jog.
04:21I'm a little nervous, and I'm definitely rusty.
04:24My brother Ron, he played college ball.
04:26He was really good and really a fast pitcher.
04:30And, um, I throw wrenches.
04:32Let's see it.
04:33Let's see what you got.
04:34All right.
04:35Let's see it.
04:39Just a...
04:40He didn't even hit the wood.
04:41On the move.
04:42Hit it on the move.
04:43Go.
04:45You're hitting everything but the hole.
04:47Hey, I got this.
04:48I got this.
04:52Oh!
04:53Oh!
04:54Oh!
04:54Oh!
04:55Oh!
04:55Oh!
04:55You just shattered that popcorn.
04:57That thing is done.
04:58You know, as if I wasn't nervous enough, me, Ron and Tyler come out, start razzing me.
05:03My arm is just going everywhere.
05:05I'm rusty.
05:06I've been throwing a baseball since I was three.
05:07I'll give you some pointers, okay?
05:09What kind of advice are you going to give me?
05:11Not to throw .
05:14You do that at Dodger Stadium, we're going to get booed.
05:16That was horrible.
05:19Wow.
05:19I've seen better arms on a rocking chair.
05:29God.
05:31Whoa.
05:32Keep your feet off the brake.
05:33What brake?
05:34You guys are slow.
05:35Get it in the corner there.
05:36I'm trying.
05:38Could you guys get it in there like...
05:39Oh!
05:41That don't sound good.
05:42Where's the engine?
05:46My biggest issue with the whole car is basically the fiberglass.
05:49It's really destroyed.
05:50And we got to make sure that this is safe to drive on the street.
05:53There's a lot of things that we got to make sure that is exactly right if the customer's
05:58going to be driving this thing around.
05:59It's got to have headlights, seat belts, brakes, and go fast enough so that it doesn't
06:04get in the way of traffic.
06:05So to make this thing street worthy, we're going to have to take the body off and get
06:09it stripped down and then get to working on the structure of the fiberglass.
06:13Okay?
06:13This thing looks straight out of Austin Powers.
06:20Yeah, baby.
06:22Oh, behave.
06:25Come on, ladies.
06:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:29Check it out.
06:30What's this?
06:33Oh, cool.
06:35Check these out, T.
06:37What?
06:37Are those sexy or what?
06:39Those are thick.
06:40They're tail lights.
06:41These things scream 60s.
06:43Which is great because we've got to focus on safety on this car.
06:46So this is a lucky find that's going to help us save some money.
06:50Watch your fingers.
06:52Up!
06:53Okay.
06:54Ready?
06:54I'm coming to you.
06:59Hell yeah.
07:00That was pretty crazy.
07:02I mean, the motor looks, you know, not too bad.
07:05But if it's going to drive in today's traffic, it's going to need an upgrade.
07:08You know, this is actually your throttle.
07:10That's the gas pedal?
07:11Yeah, that's the gas pedal.
07:12I mean, if this thing's going to be on the road, we've got to look at everything.
07:15I mean, the wiring, the brake, and then figure out what we need.
07:19I mean, there's a lot of junk there.
07:20And we don't know what we're going to throw out and what we're going to keep.
07:23Tyler, you're ahead of this frame.
07:25Kyle, you're ahead of the body.
07:26Give him the easy job.
07:27You go see Robert.
07:28He's my electric motor guy, and he's a whiz at doing small vehicles.
07:32And see what you can figure out.
07:33You sound like you know what you're talking about.
07:36I can get it done.
07:37You'd be like, wow.
07:38All right.
07:40I actually have no clue.
07:43What the hell's that?
07:44Dude, it's a dunk tank.
07:45A dunk tank?
07:46I mean, I thought this was Rick's restoration, not Rick's party house.
07:50So what's the price going to be for the whole thing?
07:52It's not going to be cheap.
07:53What?
07:54Here we go.
08:07Well, Manny and Kyle teleport the body of this swinging 60's minicar,
08:12I'm sending Tyler and Brett Lee with the chassis to a guy that knows the ins and outs of electrical
08:16vehicles.
08:19I think we're looking for a guy named Robert.
08:20This guy has so many golf carts.
08:24Are you Robert?
08:26Yep.
08:26Tyler.
08:27Robert.
08:28Nice to meet you.
08:28Nice to meet you.
08:29What this is is a 1960s electric cart.
08:33It's a fiberglass body mounted to this golf cart frame,
08:37and this couple brought it in.
08:38They want to drive it at car shows around their neighborhood.
08:41It's basically got to be street legal.
08:43Wow.
08:44This thing's in pretty rough shape.
08:46This is going to be a challenge.
08:47What's the goal they want to hit as far as a top speed?
08:49Probably like 50, 60.
08:52To where it won't stop traffic flow on the streets.
08:54We should upgrade all the motor system, brake lines.
08:58Come on over here.
08:58I got a couple options for you.
08:59All right.
09:00Let's check it out.
09:02Woo!
09:05Watch your toes.
09:06Watch your toes.
09:08Wow.
09:09So this car here has a modified V-twin engine in it.
09:13It's fully modified to make 50 horsepower.
09:15Wow.
09:16So this will be one option to get you in that 50 to 60 miles an hour.
09:19But it's a gas option.
09:21Okay.
09:21This is an AC drive motor.
09:24It uses an AC to DC inverter, which is a high-powered motor.
09:28But this is electric like your car is now.
09:31This motor should get you guys around 49 to 50 miles an hour.
09:34I think that's a better idea.
09:36That's all we need.
09:36Okay.
09:36Then this is what we'll go with.
09:39So what's the price going to be for the whole thing?
09:41It's not going to be cheap.
09:43My guess is you're looking probably at least 6,500 bucks.
09:47And when I get into this thing, I'm telling you, it could go up from there.
09:51What?
09:52I mean, we've got to do it the right way.
09:54I mean, you're putting people's lives in this thing.
09:56It's more than my dad wanted to spend.
09:58But when he put me in charge of this chassis, he did say that his number one concern was safety.
10:02So this is a tough call I'm going to have to make.
10:05What has to be done has to be done.
10:06So let's go.
10:08All right.
10:08Thanks, man.
10:08Hey, guys, have a good day.
10:09Yeah, thank you.
10:10We'll be talking to you.
10:11Oh, well.
10:26Hey, Rick.
10:27Yeah?
10:27I've got to show you something out in the boneyard.
10:29You got a minute?
10:30All right.
10:30Come to you.
10:31Come on.
10:31All right.
10:32I know Rick's a little nervous about throwing the first pitch of the Dodgers game.
10:35So like a good brother, I'm going to do anything I can to help him out.
10:39You know, I know you need a lot more practice if you're going to actually throw out the first pitch
10:42to the Dodger Stadium.
10:43What the hell you do?
10:44Clear it all out.
10:45What the hell's that?
10:46What?
10:47Dude, it's a dunk tank.
10:48A dunk tank?
10:49I mean, I thought this was Rick's restoration, not Rick's party house.
10:52So you got your target, goggles for safety for Tyler.
10:56We're going to be dunking you.
10:58Huh?
10:58You're dunking who?
10:59There's water in there.
11:01Never fear.
11:03Because you're going to be the one sitting on there.
11:07No, I...
11:08Dude, these are brand new flip-flops.
11:09I can't get them wet.
11:11My ass.
11:11You can get wet.
11:12Get up there.
11:13And I'm going to throw a couple and I'm going to nail that thing.
11:15All right.
11:16Well, I'll tell you what, okay?
11:17When you throw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium, if you don't throw a strike, then
11:22you're up on it and I'll show you how it's done.
11:24All right.
11:25You're on.
11:25You got that?
11:26You're on.
11:27Sucker.
11:28Yeah, I got this.
11:29I got this.
11:29Yeah, right.
11:30This works out great for me.
11:32I really don't want Rick to embarrass himself at Dodger Stadium, so I hope this bet will
11:36give him the right motivation.
11:38I'm getting in that dunk tank for the sake of the Dale family name.
11:41First one, you're in.
11:43Woo!
11:44I should have heated this.
11:46Your is about to go from small to micro.
11:48You can hit water if you thought of a boat.
11:50Oh!
11:51See ya.
11:52It's going to be a while.
11:53This is going to be the one.
11:54I can feel it.
11:59Wow.
12:00You're clearly horrible.
12:01Hold on.
12:01I got something that'll make it better.
12:02Hold on.
12:03What's this?
12:04Instructions on how to throw a baseball?
12:06No, it's a surprise.
12:07I think this is going to help you focus on the bullseye.
12:13Perfect.
12:15That's one good looking dude right there.
12:17Hit it.
12:20Give him the heater, Ricky.
12:29And he's in.
12:30Holy .
12:33As you can tell, I need no more practice.
12:36I'm going back to work.
12:37I mean, seeing my brother get dunked like that was awesome.
12:40I mean, now I feel a lot better about throwing out the first pitch.
12:44How do I get out of here?
12:47Hey, really, how do I get out of here?
12:57Hey, Robert.
12:59Hey, what's going on, Rick?
13:01How much?
13:01How you been?
13:02Pretty good.
13:02Pretty good.
13:03Um, Tyler and Brentley dropped off like a little electric car chassis, and I just come to check
13:07up on it and see how we're doing.
13:09All right.
13:10Come on in.
13:10I'll show it to you.
13:11Brentley and Tyler told me this chassis build was going to cost at least $6,500, which seems
13:16like a lot.
13:16I just hope it doesn't go too much over that, because I could really lose my shirt on this
13:20project.
13:21Well, here it is.
13:22Wow.
13:23Is that the same chassis?
13:24Basically, after the boys dropped it off, I couldn't salvage it.
13:27It was just unsafe.
13:28So that's when we had to make the decision to just basically start over and make you a
13:32brand new chassis.
13:33Wow.
13:35But this thing is going to be as safe as you can make it now.
13:38You know, with the upgraded brake system, front and rear, it's got hydraulic brakes in
13:43the front, and it has a backup safety system in the back.
13:46Basically, everything you see is brand new.
13:49Ah.
13:51Wow.
13:52It sounds like a lot.
13:54Um, the boys were saying it was like $6,500.
13:57Are we there?
13:58We've gone over that.
13:59How far did you go over?
14:00We were about a couple thousand dollars over.
14:03F***.
14:03You're about $8,500 is where we're at now.
14:06Unfortunately, there was just no way to cut corners and get the car safe where it represents
14:11you and us well.
14:13I mean, Robert did a great job on the chassis, but the bottom line is, I'm two grand over budget.
14:18So I need to figure out a way that it doesn't come out of the customer's pocket.
14:22Thanks.
14:22No problem.
14:23It's, I've got to tell you, it looks fantastic.
14:25Well, thank you.
14:27Beautiful.
14:28Have a good day, Rick.
14:29Okay, you too.
14:37Tyler.
14:38Back here.
14:39On that electric car that we're doing, you told me it was $6,500 to have it all done.
14:44Yeah.
14:44Now he's at $85.
14:46What'd you tell him?
14:47Well, I just told him to get it done and make it safe and make it right.
14:50You can't just give him carte blanche, you know?
14:53Now it's way into my pocket.
14:55I still have the upholstery to do, body work to do.
14:58So we could be in gigantic trouble.
15:01I got to go to California and throw in the first pitch for the Dodgers.
15:04And I need you to keep a tight rein on that.
15:07All right.
15:08Don't worry about throwing that pitch.
15:10I'm sure you'll be great.
15:19So in order to keep this project on budget, I'm keeping as much work in-house as possible.
15:24Lenny's finishing up the upholstery, Sean's putting together the lights and windows, and
15:28Kyle's making the final adjustments to the body and frame.
15:30I want this project ahead of schedule, because there's no way I'm going to miss my dad making
15:34a fool of himself at the big game.
15:38Hey, did I miss it?
15:40Not yet.
15:41Oh, I got it.
15:42You got it?
15:43Rick's about to throw his first pitch at the Dodgers game, and I tried my hardest to instill
15:47my wisdom on him.
15:48So hopefully, he doesn't make a total ass out of himself.
15:51Dude, I'm so ready to see him do whatever he's going to do.
15:55He ain't going to do that, but it up.
15:57I got 50 bucks since he messes up.
16:00Do it.
16:01I got that.
16:02Oh, my God.
16:02He's a Dale.
16:03That's what I call hedging my bets.
16:05If he throws a great pitch, I'm up 50 bucks.
16:08If he messes it up, his ass is in the dunk tank.
16:11Whatever.
16:11He's still an athlete.
16:12He can still get it.
16:13Athlete?
16:14Guys, he's lying down.
16:16He's on.
16:17There he is.
16:20And walking out to the mound for the first pitch is Rick Dale.
16:24Gun Breaks Restoration's Las Vegas.
16:26Let's give him a hand, folks.
16:28He doesn't have sleeves on.
16:29Come on, man.
16:31Let's go.
16:34Ready?
16:35Come on, ready?
16:42Here we go.
16:43Three, two, one.
16:45Oh, yeah!
16:46Oh, my God!
16:53Come on, man.
16:54Let's go, brother.
16:56Bad man.
16:56Walking out to the mound for the first pitch is Rick Dale.
16:59Rick's Restoration's Las Vegas.
17:02Rick's about to throw out the first pitch of the Dodger game.
17:04If he brings shame to the Dale family name, into the dunk tank he goes.
17:09But if he throws a strike, I get 50 bucks from Cowboy.
17:12Either way, I win.
17:14Ray?
17:15Come on, Ray.
17:16Come on, Ray.
17:25Oh, my God!
17:26Oh, my God!
17:28Oh, my God!
17:28You suck, man!
17:29That was bad!
17:31Oh, my God!
17:31That was not good at all.
17:32Oh, my God.
17:33Here's the replay.
17:34Oh, my God!
17:36And you owe me 50 bucks.
17:38There's an ATM right outside.
17:40I'll be right back.
17:41Yeah, I'll see you next week.

18:01Nick?
18:01Hey, Rick.
18:02So, you ready?
18:02Oh, we're so excited.
18:04You remember what this electric car looked like, right?
18:06Oh, yeah.
18:06Busted out headlights.
18:08Looked like rats were living in the interior.
18:10Flat tires.
18:11We had to push it.
18:14Hey, Cowboy!
18:17Oh, my God, it has a horn.
18:21Oh, my God!
18:24Oh, my God, it's awesome!
18:28When that car first rounded that corner, I was shocked.
18:33I mean, it was amazing.
18:37Look at it!
18:40Oh, my God.
18:41That is awesome.
18:43Check it out.
18:44How'd she drive, Cowboy?
18:46Awesome.
18:47Thanks, buddy.
18:48Oh, look at the interior.
18:50Oh, I have a ghost apartment.
18:53It looks like a real car.
18:55I know.
18:56Compared to what we brought in, it is a million times better.
19:01I mean, I didn't even think that you were going to be able to restore it.
19:04I got to tell you how this whole project went through.
19:07We re-fiberglassed everything, making it thicker, and making it nice and sturdy now.
19:11And then we gave it a beautiful blue paint job like you want.
19:14Oh, yeah.
19:14Back here, this is where your power plant is.
19:17All the batteries are brand new.
19:19All the cables are new.
19:20All your controls are right here.
19:22It's got the blinkers right here.
19:23You see the headlights work?
19:25And then their horn works.
19:27Yeah, it does.
19:28Oh, I absolutely love it.
19:30Wow, Rick.
19:31You did an amazing job.
19:32This thing now will do 50 miles an hour.
19:35Oh, my God.
19:36It's safe.
19:36It's got good brakes in it.
19:38I mean, it's street worthy.
19:39Oh, can I take it for a test drive?
19:41Oh, yeah, yeah.
19:42We are going to be the top of the town at these car shows.
19:44I mean, people are going to be jealous.
19:47They're going to be looking for us when we show up at these car shows.
19:51Okay.
19:53Oh, my God.
19:54Look at it.
19:54Oh, my God.
20:00Handled brave.
20:01And I was able to steer, and it reacted comfortably.
20:07It felt safe.
20:11Wow.
20:13Oh, my God.
20:14It's so fast.
20:14My expectations were high, and they surpassed them.
20:17I'm speechless.
20:18I'm still speechless.
20:20This thing's awesome.
20:28How's the water feel, bro?
20:29Is it cold in there?
20:30It's freezing, but I ain't got nothing to worry about.
20:33You know, if your pitch wasn't so bad, you wouldn't be in this situation.
20:36You know what?
20:36There's a lot of pressure on the mound.
20:39The anticipation's killing me, bitch.
20:41One pitch.
20:42That's all you get.
20:42One.
20:43Good thing you're the athlete.
20:50Come on.
20:52Oh!

21:10I'm having a bad day.
21:12That was awesome.
21:13It's making me cold just thinking about it.
21:15I need to stick to the illustration.
21:17Screw this baseball.
21:18Oh, mother of God, it's cold.
